As the trend to deeper mines, producing from marginal ore bodies, continues, mine hoists and their associated equipment will become more sophisticated, complex, large and expensive. Over the past two decades, mine hoisting equipment and systems have moved from steam engines to static rectification of ac to dc, and electronic controls are the standard. It is the intent of this section to present what is currently available in the field of mine hoisting equipment and systems. Because the present engineer has been exposed longer and more intensively to such things as computers, electronic devices, and machine design, no attempt has been made to make this a layman's article. Contributions from the electrical design and application engineer, gearing and hearing design engineers and other specialists have been incorporated. Some material will be devoted to electrical drive systems, rectifiers and gearing design among others. These items are inherent in the design of a mine hoisting system and the subsequent selection of the correct, most reliable and most economic system. The mine hoist can be a bottleneck between the underground mine and the surface mill. Correct selection of the right type of hoist is imperative. In this vital link between mine and mill, crude estimates of hoist capacity are not good enough, and the mining engineer must design and select the right hoisting system to meet the design specifications. 15.1-MINE HOIST TYPES There are two basic types of mine hoists available anywhere in the world today: the drum hoist on which the hoist rope is actually stored during the hoisting cycle, and the friction (Koepe), which merely passes the rope over the wheel during the hoisting process. Drum and friction hoists are "generic" terms which describe the two basic categories. Within each category are variations, as below. 15.1.1-DRUM HOISTS Drum hoists, as noted, actually store the hoist rope on the drum much the same as line on a fishing reel. To accomplish this task, the drums are so designed to store, in one or more layers, the footage of wire rope equal to the total maximum hoisting distance plus sufficient rope for cutting and inspection at regular intervals and for holding to the drum (see Fig. 15-1). Usual practice in hoist drum design is to allow three turns of hoist rope for holding on the drum and three turns for inspection cuttings. 1. Single-Drum Hoists-Fig. 15-2 shows a typical single-drum hoist as manufactured by most U.S. heavy-mining-equipment companies. With the exception of some very minor features, this design configuration is standard throughout the U.S.A. Fig. 15-3 is a plan view of a typical single-drum mine hoist. This particular hoist has a single-motor drive and a double-reduction set of gearing.

INTRODUCTION Fluorspar is the common term used for the mineral fluorite, which is naturally occurring calcium fluoride (CaF2). It is the principal source of fluorine, the most reactive of the chemical elements, from which a great variety of unique and strategically important chemicals are produced. Commercial deposits of fluorspar are widespread throughout the world, and its availability is essential to the industrial progress of all nations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY In its pure form fluorspar, CaF2, contains 51.1% calcium and 48.9% fluorine, and has a sp gr of 3.18 and a hardness of 4. It is commonly a glassy mineral. colorless, white, or grayish. but may also be various shades of purple, pink, blue, green, yellow, or tan. It belongs to the cubic system mineralogically, and commonly crystallizes into cubic shapes in vugs and cavities, although most of it is massive, with interlocking crystals. Two pressure balancing chambers were constructed at a Colorado coal mine to reduce the risk of spontaneous combustion. Each chamber was established by installing a Kennedy stopping at about 10 ft (3 m) in front of an isolation seal, and equipped with two safety doors, a nitrogen injection system, and a set of environmental monitors. Several pressure balancing tests for different ventilation conditions were conducted in these chambers. During each test, pressurized nitrogen was injected into the chamber and the pressure differentials across the stoppings and seals monitored. This study presents a summary of the results achieved, lessons learned, and the basic requirements to operate a pressure chamber effectively.

Thiele Kaolin Co. has invested much time and money in achieving and maintaining its IS0 9002 certification. Through a regimen of process control and documentation, routine audits and a commitment to quality management, this kaolin producer is a competitive pigment supplier in a worldwide market. Background In 1987, the International Organization for Standards developed the ISO 9000 quality management system. This series of standards is used as a means to ensure customers that a quality management system is in place. Certification of a company does not mean that an individual product is of high quality. Rather, it demonstrates a supplier's ability to meet its customers' product and service needs. It also shows that a company has documented records to assure product consistency. The ISO 9000 system was begun in England during the early 1980s. During the mid-1970s, the British manufacturing industry was experiencing low quality. In an attempt to boost quality standards, the British government established the BS 5750 standards system. In 1987, BS 5750 was incorporated into ISO 9000. The ISO 9000 series consists of three levels of certification. ISO 9001 is the model for quality assurance in "design/development, production, installation and servicing." This standard applies to companies that rely on research and development to bring products that frequently change to market. ISO 9002 involves "production and installation" only. This standard is relevant to industries that produce a specific product according to specifications - either their own or their customer's. ISO 9003 is the model in "final inspection and test." This standard is the least detailed of the 9000 series. It is also the most applicable to companies that purchase, inspect or sort and resell. The quality system requirements for certification are outlined in the 18 elements of ISO 9002. These include: 4.1 - Management responsibility. 4.2 - Quality systems. 4.3 - Contract review. 4.4 - Design control. 4.5 - Document and data control. 4.6 - Purchasing. 4.7 - Control of customer-supplied product. 4.8 - Product identification and traceability. 4.9 - Process control. 4.10 - Inspection and testing. 4.11- Control of inspection, measuring and test equipment. 4.12 - Inspection and test status. 4.13 - Control of nonconforming product. 4.14 - Corrective and preventive action. 4.15 - Handling, storage, packaging, preservation and delivery. 4.16 - Control of quality records. 4.17 - Internal quality audits. 4.18 -Training. Continuous improvement, though implied in maintaining these requirements, could potentially be included in the quality system requirements in the next revision. Mini-projects studying the flotation chemistry of paper de-inking were incorporated to an educational program at Michigan Technological University with support from the paper recycling industry. Interfacial activity of frothing agents, surfactants and polymers in de-inking flotation systems has been studied through flotation, atomic force microscopy, zeta potential, contact angle, surface tension, and froth stability measurements. These fundamental studies were developed to understand microscopic and molecular effects occurring in flotation of ink particles that may lead to improved designs in de-¬inking flotation processes. Fundamental studies indicate that ethoxylated alcohols are efficient frothing agents in flotation and can be used to clean the recovered paper from hydrophobic ink particles. Next, it was further supported in this research that the fatty acids activated by calcium ions act as collectors in flotation of ink particles. Finally, improvements in de-inking flotation are reported in laboratory tests involving aqueous solutions of polymeric flocculants.

Tremendous strides have been made in front end loaders in the last fifteen years. Fifteen years ago a 2; cubic yard front end loader was the largest standard machine you could purchase. Today there are two commercially available 15 yard front end loaders and many 10 yard front end loaders. The estimated total worldwide market for all front end loaders over one cubic yard has increased to over 30,000 units yearly. The trend for front end loaders, in general, and for the mining market, in particular, is to larger and larger loaders. Today there are 18 cubic yard and a 24 cubic yard front end loader in prototype form. It is not inconceivable that within another fifteen years that there will be front end loaders in the 50 cubic yard class with design features quite different from today's. These larger loaders are being designed at the demand of the mining industry and the design criteria are being directed at this market area. The costs of these larger loaders will be greater per unit of capacity, and it is the intent of the various manufacturers that they will be more reliable, be easier to service, give greater availability, live longer, and cost less to maintain, than previous loaders. It is also the intent of the manufacturers to compete directly with the large mining shovel as the front end loaders become appropriately larger and more reliable. There has been some trend in this direction in the past with smaller shovels and loaders. In Figure No. 1 are data for U.S. production of front end loaders (5-6 cubic yard class and 10 cubic yard class) and U.S. production of cable operation, crawler mounted power shovels, draglines and cranes (1; to 5 cubic yard class) for the years 1965 and 1970. INTRODUCTION This chapter outlines some general principles and procedures that a rock mechanics engineer can use to arrive at a logical design for the size, shape, and spacings of underground openings in various types of com¬petent rock formations. Rock formations can be clas¬sified into six major categories which are useful for design purposes, provided the necessary input data are available regarding the geology of the site, the physical properties of the rock, the in-situ stress field in the rock, and the general geometry of the underground openings. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed a rock classification system based upon these concepts and found it to be useful for design purposes (Obert, et al., 1960; Obert and Duvall, 1967). This classification sys¬tem is given in Table 1; however, an extra column has been added to the original classification to indicate the appropriate design techniques for each rock class. In this classification system, two main classes of rock are considered: competent rock and incompetent rock. Competent Rock Competent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geological characteristics, is capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of any structural support except that provided by unmined rock in the form of pillars and side walls, etc. Roof bolts and small random props which support only local loose rock are not considered structural supports. Competent rock is further subdivided into three ad¬ditional categories-massive, laminated, and jointed¬ which are defined as follows: Massive Rock: Massive rock is a rock formation where the spacing between mechanical defects such as joints, partings, or faults is equal to or greater than the critical dimensions of openings, or where the strength of the bond across these mechanical defects is com¬parable to the rock strength. Laminated Rock: Laminated rock is a rock forma¬tion divided by approximately parallel planes of weak¬ness into lamina whose thicknesses are small compared to critical dimensions of openings and where the bond between the lamina is weak compared to the rock strength. Elastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties will permit the use of elastic theory to predict strains and displacements from applied stresses. Inelastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties are such that strains and displacements are a strong function of time as well as applied stress. Incompetent Rock Incompetent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geologic characteristics, is not capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of additional structural support in the form of linings, steel sets, or systems of props. This classification system for rock depends not only on the mechanical and geologic characteristics of the rock but on the size of openings and their depth be¬low the surface. For example, many competent rocks at shallow depths for small stress fields could become inelastic rock at greater depths and larger stress fields, or competent massive rock for small openings could be¬come laminated or jointed rock for larger openings. Thus, to classify rock for design purposes requires a knowledge of the geologic properties of the rock mass, the physical properties of the rock, the general size of the openings to be mined, and the average range of the in-situ stress field to be encountered. To design underground openings and structures in rock, it is necessary to use criteria of failure for rock under various stress conditions, and to use safety factors to allow for differences between laboratory and in-situ strength properties of rock and to account for errors in¬troduced by the various assumptions made in the design process. Criteria of failure based on maximum stresses have been found to give reliable results in practice. Thus, it is assumed that rock will fail in tension when the tensile stress exceeds the tensile strength of the rock as determined by a standard modulus of rupture test on samples of rock core. If the tensile stresses in rock are small, then it is assumed that the rock will fail at a value of compressive stress equal to the compressive strength of the rock as determined by standard uniaxial compres¬sive strength tests on samples of rock core. These fail¬ure criteria, when used with appropriate safety factors, can be expressed as:

When a company like Lonmin, the third largest platinum producer in the world, is mining one of the most precious metals in the world, time is money. Every piece of equipment is expected to be in top shape because every minute of downtime can add up to lost profit. Two different types of platinum ore are mined and processed by Lonmin, namely Merensky and UG2. Merensky has a grade of 3.5 g/t (0.1 oz/st) and UG2 has a grade of 4.5 g/t (0.13 oz/st). The mine also produces platinum group metals (PGM), which consist of platinum, osmium, palladium, rhodium, iridium and ruthenium. Although South Africa has more than 80 percent of the world?s PGM reserves, these minerals are very scarce. Lonmin is considered a low-cost producer of these minerals, generating 21.5 t (694,000 oz) of platinum and 18.6 t (600,000 oz) of PGMs in 2012. So when the company?s Karee K3 concentrator plant in Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa, was experiencing high operating costs on the transfer points, a solution was needed.

"During the mid to late 1960’s, the underground potash industry in Saskatchewan was born. For the next four decades the industry operated at a steady pace supporting a large part of the world demand; until 2008 when the potash market heightened. Operators were motivated to capitalize on this increased demand, new mines were proposed while existing mines were planning upgrades. Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PCS) was one of the major producers planning upgrades to their production facilities quickly, including modifying the existing headframe and shaft at the PCS Cory Site to accommodate a new 1500 tonne per hour hoisting plant. Upon completion of the project, the innovative operations group continuously reviewed methods to increase production and reduce operating costs, allowing PCS to continue being competitive on the world market. This paper will describe the design challenges encountered during the development of the infrastructure around an operating facility whilst minimizing down time, schedule, capital and construction costs. This paper will also explore the strategy to increase capacity of the newly commissioned hoisting plant. BACKGROUND Potash production is a major Saskatchewan industry, and has played a significant role in the economy for over 40 years. Production commenced in 1962 when water problems were overcome at the International Minerals and Chemical (IMC) mine near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. A surge of development by other companies resulted in twelve companies opening ten mines by 1970. In 1975 Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan was created by the government of Saskatchewan and shortly thereafter purchased several mines in Saskatchewan, including the Cory Mine (Cory), near Saskatoon. Cory has been in operation since 1968 and is located 12 km (7.5 mi) west of Saskatoon in central Saskatchewan. The mine is located in the center of the world’s largest potash deposit, 1,000 m (3300 feet) below surface. PCS has embarked on sizable capital expansions of more than CDN $7 billion. The Cory CDN $1.6 billion expansion was expected to raise operational capability of the site to 2.7 million tonnes per year, an increase of 1.9 million tonnes per year (MTPY). To achieve 2.7 MTPY of finished product and considering the 22.6% average production recovery1, 12 MTPY of ore must be hoisted to surface for processing. To deliver this rate required upgrading of the hoisting plant to 1500 tonne per hour (TPH). To accomplish this ambitious challenge, creative thinking, careful planning and a cohesive team was needed to work together to ensure the schedule, budget and most importantly the work was completed safely"

Since 1965 several researchers have independently developed computer models for designing gathering belt and surge bin capacities in underground coal mine belt systems. Table 1 summarizes the models applicable to U.S. mining systems. Most of the models, employ the Monte Carlo simulation technique. Basically, the belt loading at each loading point is randomly produced from probability distributions. In some cases, a combination of deterministic calculations and probability distributions are used to simulate the loading. Once the loading is simulated, it is systematically moved through the belt system in a deterministic fashion based on belt speeds, belt lengths, and storage bin discharge rates. The coal flowing from each loading point is tracked as it moves through the belt system. When the loading from tm different sources combines on a belt or in a surge bin, checks are made to determine if capacities have been exceeded. If capacities have been exceeded the amount of spillage is calculated. At the end of the simulated time period, the cumulative spill- age is used to evaluate the belt and surge bin capacities. Naturally, a considerable amount of spillage indicates the capacities are unacceptable. Acceptable capacities are generally indicated by minimal spillage. Numerous trial simulations are often necessary to find the acceptable capacities.

I found the article most interesting and timely. I consider it imperative that mine case studies like this one are undertaken and published so that the practicing mining engineer and geologist can obtain a better idea of what is the preferred estimation and grade control technique to use, given the site-specific geology, grade distribution, etc. Mining companies, with operating gold mines, need to be encouraged to either initiate such a study in-house or support a research project by financing a graduate student at a local university. The latter method is preferable since it not only provides research support but also an excellent training opportunity for young mining engineers and geologists. Ideally, what is needed is exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and mine production data that can then be used to assess the efficiency of different estimation and grade control methods by comparing the results obtained using the drill/blasthole data with the actual production data. It is hoped that more mining companies will realize that the rewards from this kind of research greatly outweigh the sometimes perceived problem with releasing data to a university. I noticed that the authors used the blasthole data to represent the actual values, the validity of which relies heavily on the two key assumptions with regards to blasthole assays and in-pit ore-waste selection procedures. Could the authors comment in more detail on these assumptions and what criteria they used to check the validity of the assumptions? Since the article was published, have the authors had the opportunity to compare their estimates with the actual production data? It would be interesting to compare other estimation methods with OK and IK. For example, how well did the polygonal method used at the mine compare with the results given in the paper? I would like to mention that B.L. Kwa completed a similar study (Kwa and Mousset-Jones, 1986) using exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and production data from the Alligator Ridge mine in Nevada. The study compared a variety of estimation methods, including IK, and the final results are shown in Fig. 1. The IK method exhibits the smallest difference between estimated and production results and is closely followed by the indicator moving window (Ind MW) method. Reply by Y.C. Kim We do concur with Professor Mousset-Jones with respect to the merit of such case studies performed at a local university. In answer to his request for comment on the validity of the two key assumptions made in our paper, we can only say that these are reasonable assumptions that are very difficult to validate. The assumption of blasthole assays being accurate can be partially validated by a careful analysis of the nugget component of blasthole variograms. The assumption that the in-pit ore-waste selection procedure in use was an effective one can only be validated through comparison between the mine estimates of ounces of gold versus the actual recovered ounces of gold at the mill. Neither one of these two assumptions has been validated to date due to several reasons. For example, the mine went through a change in management since the study. Similarly, no compelling reasons have been presented to perform detailed variogram analysis of the blasthole data. We do, however, believe that the obtained results (i.e., indicator kriging performs better than OK in a highly skewed deposit) will remain the same in relative terms, regardless of how valid these two assumptions may be. The most recent com¬parative study by D. S. Lindsey of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology also shows a similar ranking between ordinary kriging versus probability kriging, which is an extended version of indicator kriging.

Lead, zinc, copper, silver, cadmium and many other heavy metals which are potentially hazardous if released into the environment in wastewater discharges have been of considerable concern to governmental agencies, industry and the general public. In response to this concern, an interdisciplinary research team at the University of Missouri has been funded by the National Science Foundation-RANN program to study trace contaminants associated with the production of lead for the past eight years. Seven modern mines in close proximity to two lead smelters in the forested Ozarks of Southeast Missouri are the largest source of lead in the world and in 1976 alone produced 504,095 short tons of lead, 82% of the United States total production. This new and rapid industrial development in a sparsely populated. rural forest region has offered a unique opportunity for studying the impact of trace metals and for developing improved techniques to control detrimental effects. Research on the wastewater discharges and two methods of biological and recycle control are discussed in this paper. Although the two mine-mill complexes investigated in this study have many similarities, the differences between the two are substantive and warrant separate examination.

My recent experience has been with wet tropical environments, which address a different set of concerns than Nevada, for example. Spraying rather than drips are required in most cases just to assist the water balance requirement, and my comments address those situations. Most tropical operations are faced with both extremely wet and very dry seasons, with some having multiple cycles during the year. A heap leach operation must address the rate of solution building up within the ponds and how long the volume must last until the next rainy season. It may be easier to construct sufficient pond volume to permit yearlong operation than by discharging excess solution now, and searching for water later. Pond capacity requirements can help with the following: Consider using the solution that could be locked up in the pads during leaching to assist water balance problems. Spray excess solution continuously onto spent ore that would not be normally be sprayed again to "soak up" the excess solution, and stop spraying when the water balance is low, allowing the solution in the spent ore to return back into the system-with or without cyanide added. In a multiple lift system, if intermediate HDPE liners are planned for solution grade control, have drips placed before the HPDE liner is in place. The drips can distribute excess precipitation throughout the lower lifts to control the water balance, while the most current lifts are being leached and sent directly for the preg pond. With only 2 million tonnes (2.2 million tons) of spent ore involved, up to 200,000 cubic meters (53 million gallons) of solution could be moved into or out of the water balance system, if proper methods are designed and installed. That is equivalent to one meter (40 inches) precipitation falling on a 200,000 square meter (2.2 million square feet) pad area. You may even get a little bit more gold recovered as the solution drains from the earlier pads, as well.

INTRODUCTION The use of roof and rock bolts to reinforce the strata is an established method of rock support in both underground and surface excavations. However, the need to drill a hole, extract the drill-rods, and then place the bolt is time-consuming and costly. This becomes even more significant if the bolting is repetitive and extensive as in coal mining. Though the main thrust of this development was directed towards coal mining, the basic concepts are also widely applicable to all excavations. The authors, therefore, feel that this innovation should be of interest in rapid excavation and in tunneling. In the case of coal mining, it has been established from past statistics that the roof-bolting operation is the most hazardous activity. This is primarily because of the operator being exposed to unsupported ground. It is evident that remote installation of roof bolts would markedly improve the safety of the operation, if accomplished more readily with self-drilling bolts rather than the conventional two-step variety operation. Thus, in addition to increasing productivity, this development can be considered to be a milestone towards further improvements. The objective of this program was to establish the technical and economic feasibility of self-drilling roof bolts for use in coal mines. It might be clarified at the outset that this work was, therefore, directed primarily at showing that workable self-drilling bolts with less cost can be developed, which could be effectively used in mines. It was not to fabricate a production model bolt.

The Groveland deposit, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, consists of an E -W trending overturned syncline of Middle Precambrian Vulcan iron formation. At Groveland, the Vulcan formation can be divided into four units or facies. The total succession may be more than 550 feet thick, and consists of a basal unit composed of a lean chemical quartzite with traces of magnetite; a non-banded, partly clastic unit characterized by the preponderance of hematite over magnetite; a transition unit of well-banded magnetite-bearing iron formation interbedded with non-banded oolitic hematite; and a well-banded magnetite-quartz silicate unit at the top of the exposed sequence. The present magnetite-hematite ratios of different units within the orebody are considered to be a primary (post-diagenetic) feature of the original sediment. Subsequent regional metamorphism has increased the grain size of the original iron oxide minerals, but did not appreciably alter the oxidation state of the original sediment.

Despite a global slowdown in most mining sectors, Caterpillar, the world?s largest mining equipment maker continues to forge ahead with new, and improved offerings to the global mining industry. On Nov. 10, as part of its Loading and Hauling Mining Focus Session at its Tinaja Hills proving grounds south of Tucson, AZ, Caterpillar unveiled to customers and media its two latest mining products, the 994K wheel loader and 6020B hydraulic shovel. The Caterpillar 994K wheel loader builds on a nearly 25-year history of the 994 model but with one noticeable difference ? the 994K is bigger ? much bigger. Weighing in at 239,142 kg (527,218 lb) the 994 K is up to 20 percent larger and comes with up to 30 percent increase in payload capacity. This behemoth of a machine is currently being tested at Caterpillar?s Tucson Proving Grounds, Anglo Gold Ashanti?s Cripple Creek and Victor gold mine in Colorado and Taseko?s Gibraltor copper and molybdenum mine in British Columbia, Canada.

Newmont Gold operates the Carlin East underground, one of four underground gold mines the company operates in northeastern Nevada. Carlin East began full production in early 1995. The mine's current rate is 900 t/d (1,000 stpd), producing about 4.6 t/a (150,000 oz/year). About 125 hourly and salaried personnel are employed at the project for its estimated six-year mine life. Two mining methods are currently used at the Carlin East Mine. Longhole stoping with cemented backfill accounts for 70% of the total mine production. Conventional underhand drift and cemented fill accounts for the balance of the daily tonnage. In December 1996. Newmont purchased an AC-Eickhoff ET-210 roadheader. The machine went into service in mid-June 1997. It is used in longhole Stope topcut development and cut-and-fill production at a rate of 225 t/d (250 stpd)

A housewide vibration and sound monitoring system was installed in a West Virginia home subjected to blasts from various distances and directions. Eighty-nine blast events were monitored and analyzed. Fifteen channels of data were collected, including data from three triaxial geophones, one airblast microphone, one uniaxial geophone mounted on the wall of the house (response channel) and four microphones that recorded CD-quality sound waves inside the house. Each of these channels was recorded on the same time scale. The response channel signal was easily separated into ground vibration and airblast-induced movement, due to differences in the time of arrival. This response channel was then compared to the sounds recorded to determine which component of blast vibration induced the maximum sound response. Blasts at distances less than 762 meters (2,500 feet) had maximum sound responses from both ground vibration and airblast, while for blasts beyond 762 meters (2,500 feet), the maximum sound response was caused by ground vibration without exception. When airblast was identified as the dominant sound generator, the peak amplitude of the sound was directly related to the amplitude of airblast. When ground vibration was identified as the dominant sound generator, the peak amplitude of sound was not related to the amplitude of ground vibration. Findings from frequency analysis showed that the frequency content of sounds inside the house was not related to the frequency content of airblast or ground vibration, regardless of source. This finding suggests that residents will have difficulty determining the source of blast-induced noise in their homes. The proposed airblast response factor (ABRF) can aid blasting operations to determine the dominant source of sounds inside a complainant’s house based on the time-of-arrival relationships. With this site-specific information, public relations responses can be developed accordingly.

Two-phase (water and air) flow in a self-aspirated WEMCO flotation machine has been investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The geometric model is a replica of a 300 m3 cell. A 72-degree sector containing two blades of the ten-blade rotor has been modeled and periodic boundary conditions are applied in the circumferential direction. Simulation of a sector of the machine allows acceptable resolution of the mean flow field using 4x106 grid points. The flow is modeled by Euler-Euler approach, and transport equations are solved using a commercial software ANSYS-CFX5 [1]. Unsteady simulations have been performed. In a self-aspirated machine, airflow rate is not known a prior; it is an output from the CFD simulation. Uniform mean bubble diameter of 0.7 mm has been specified as an input for the simulation. Air flow rate and power consumption have been monitored with time, and results indicate a stable operation. Air volume fraction contours and velocity field in different regions of the machine are presented and discussed.
