A national survey, 1978-1980, found 180,973 waste impoundments used by industrial mining, municipal and other interests. Possibly 27,000 contain hazardous materials. The potential hazard of leaks polluting water supplies is a growing concern. An electrical technique was developed to efficiently and speedily detect and locate leaks in geomembrane-lined liquid impoundments without emptying the contents. A potential applied between the liquid and earth causes electric current to flow through leaks in the insulating geomembrane material to ground. The cur- rent density around the leak is used to detect and locate the leak. Field tests show single and multiple leaks 2.54 cm in diameter or less can be detected and located to within less than 30 cm.

Most lead and zinc secondaries are recycled pyrometallurgically. However, many problems encountered in secondary smelters have been solved by addition of physical concentration and/or hydrometallurgical processing steps, with resulting important environmental benefits. U.S. secondary lead and zinc operations are described, covering conventional smelters, EAF-dust treaters, and zinc sulfate/fertilizer producers, including plant capacities, technologies, and outputs. During the past two decades, remarkable advances have been achieved by recycling spent lead-acid battery components. Interaction between primary and secondary zinc producers, the fertilizer industry, and the zinc chemical industry has substantially decreased waste generation.

The Boliden Aitik concentrator in Sweden processes 2,000 tph of low grade copper ore. The plant consists of five grinding lines feeding four bulk flotation banks with a scavenger concentrate regrind mill, and a column cleaner circuit with a regrind mill. The authors installed a model-based expert, optimizing control system to maximize copper recovery in the bulk flotation circuit while maintaining an appropriate copper grade in the cleaner feed. The optimizing control system uses on-line assays and calculates and implements set points for cell pulp levels, air rates and reagent addition rates. It combines the power of a dynamic population balance model which estimates mineral liberation in each stream, an optimizer which computes appropriate set points and a rule-based module which implements the strategy. The benefits have been evaluated over three months. The model-based expert, optimizing control system generates a measurable increase in copper recovery, around 0.5 per cent and an optimized bulk concentrate grade. The need to maintain the optimizing control system and other practical aspects are discussed.

The shrinkage method of stoping with pillar support has been used at Agnes Gold Mine since mining commenced. Until recently, rock instability did not have any detrimental effect on safety or production. Presently sill pillars are failing not only on the current production levels, but also in shallower old worked-out areas. The incidence of failure raises the question as to whether the pillar dimensions are adequate at the current working depths and what their size should be at greater depths. The effect of pillar dimensions on the economics of the mining operation is of paramount importance because of the amount of ore that can be left unmined.

Rock strata, natural and mining-induced stresses, and structural features can combine to create dangerous instabilities in or around longwall panels. Rock noises and properties variations associated with local stress systems can be used to characterize developing instabilities. Through a learning process at a particular mine, guidelines can be developed to allow the determination of relative risk and timing of a potentially disastrous instability. Once a dangerous instability has been identified, operational modifications can be employed to get through the instability, or active measures such as destressing can be used to mitigate the instability. This paper will discuss how an integrated monitoring system and associated data processing can be used to develop a hazard prediction capability for a longwall mine.

Utilizing the principles of elastic-brittle fracture mechanics, stress-displacement relationships are derived for an elastic solid containing a slip plane consisting of various configurations of collinear arrays of cracks. These models take into account the heterogeneous nature of slip planes as observed in the lab and in the field, and are relevant to the behavior of rock containing faults, joints, bedding planes, and fractures. All of our models exhibit slip weakening behavior, and show regimes of both stable (aseismic) and unstable (seismic) deformation. For given configurations of cracks and applied boundary conditions, our results show explicit ly the energy released through unstable crack growth. For instance, it is found that two equal length cracks growing together release more seismic energy than, say, a large crack growing into a small crack. Also, by allowing cracks to coalesce, our models show multiple stick-slip events without crack healing or other geochemical means.

Western underground coal reserves are tremendous, but recovery in western seams can be poor because of mining problems caused by deep cover, geologic anomalies, and thick seams. For instance, many seams contain a rock parting too thick to be extracted economically with the coal. This forces the operator to mine the coal above or below the parting. Subsequently, the rock pressures induced by mining make the part left difficult or impossible to extract by standard mining methods. Because upper and lower parts of the seam are frequently of minable thickness, the presence of rock partings can result in a significant loss of coal. Given a longwall recovery of 60 pct and equal thickness for the two parts of the seam, overall recovery is reduced to less than 30 pct if one part only is mined. The coal left in place is unavailable to meet the nation's energy needs, or to produce revenues for coal companies or government. [ ] Multi-slice longwall mining has the potential to recover the portion of split seams that are now left in the mine. Using superimposed standard longwalls with chain pillars, overall recovery could be doubled, depending on panel and pillar widths. Using a combination of advancing and retreating longwalls in descending slices, overall recovery could be improved to more than 80 pct. Because of the potential for improved recovery, the Bureau of Mines is analyzing the ground control factors affecting multi-slice longwall under western mining conditions and is conducting field trials at a planned multi-slice operation.

With new mineral deposits found in areas of difficult terrain, and annual production capacity increasing in mines over the last decade, the aerial ropeway is proving to be a viable, economic method of transportation from mine to processing plant. Of the more conventional designs, a bicable ropeway is more suited to difficult country than the simpler monocable. The bicable, however, does have limitations in the difference in levels it can accommodate in one section at a given capacity. This is noticeable where hilly terrain and high capacity imposes a limit on the length of each section. Increasing the number of sections for a relatively short conveying distance tends, in the case of conventional bicable, to unbalance the normally favorable economics of the ropeway. In addition to analyzing hauling rope stresses, other areas have to be considered when looking at high capacity ropeways. Bucket capacity, speed, and the wheel load on track ropes are examples. These and other factors led British Ropeway Engineering Co., of Sevenoaks, Kent, UK, to produce the twin-track system. Using twin track ropes, larger capacity buckets, and, if the height differential warrants, the installation of twin hauling ropes, BRECO produced a ropeway design for areas of hilly terrain and at higher capacities than had been considered suitable for aerial ropeways. Designs have been produced for systems handling 1.5 kt/h (1,650 stph), and the potential exists for expansion to above 2 kt/h (2,200 stph). The arrangement of ropes provides high stability of the cars and is especially suited to areas where high winds occur during normal operation. This development allows the aerial ropeway to be applied economically in difficult areas and at the increasingly high capacities demanded by engineers. Ropeway Transports Limestone to Sudan Cement Plant Maspio Cement Corp. of Atbara, Sudan, will soon use an aerial ropeway to deliver its entire limestone requirement 20 km (12 miles) from quarry to plant. The Atbara plant is located north of Khartoum, near the east bank of the Nile River. The quarry is west of the river, in hills rising from flat desert country. The original transport system was a 24-km (15-mile) railway from the quarry to the west bank and a monocable ropeway that crossed the Nile and continued to the fac¬tory, a distance of about 2.5 km (1.5 miles). "The Northgate Link Extension project is the third phase of the Sound Transit master plan to extend light rail throughout the greater Seattle metropolitan area. When completed, the Northgate Link Extension will extend the existing light rail system north by about 7 km (4.3 miles) from the University of Washington to the Northgate neighborhood. A general overview of the project alignment is provided as Fig. 1. The project was funded by a combination of federal grants and allocations from local taxes. The general contractor on the project was JCM Northlink LLC (JCM), a joint venture between Jay Dee Contractors, Frank Coluccio Construction Company and Michels Corp. SoilFreeze, Inc. was retained as a subcontractor to provide ground freezing design and construction services.The project involved the construction of two parallel 5.5-m, 25-cm (18-ft, 10-in.) (inside) diameter tunnels using earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) and precast segmental concrete tunnel liners. The two tunnels maintained roughly the same elevation along the alignment and were spaced roughly 12 m (40 ft) apart (centerline to centerline). A total of 23 cross-passages connecting the two tunnels were included at approximate 244-m (800-ft) intervals. Cross passage excavations were elliptical in shape with dimensions of approximately 5.6 m (18.5 ft) in height and 5.3 m (17 ft) in width. The cross-passages were 5.8 to 6.1 m (19 to 20 ft) long as measured between the exterior of the tunnels at springline elevation. Cross passages were intentionally located directly beneath public right-of-ways thus avoiding buildings. Many of the cross passages were located beneath narrow roads in residential neighborhoods with mature vegetation, existing utility structures and piping and limited parking areas. Excavation and support for each cross passage was completed using the sequential excavation method (SEM).The subsurface soil and ground water conditions at the cross-passage locations were described in the Northgate Link Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) prepared by Jacobs Associates and the Northgate Link Geotechnical Data Report (GDR) prepared by Shannon and Wilson, Inc. Soils along the project alignment were glacially overridden and characterized as very dense or hard. Subsurface soils consisted of cohesionless sand and gravel (CSG), cohesionless silt and fine sand (CSF), cohesive clay and silt (CCS) and till and till-like deposits (TLD)."

Utilizing automation is one way to improve competitiveness. Roof and rib bolting in underground coal mines has not changed significantly for more than 40 years. Most roof bolting is still a largely manual process involving high levels of staff carrying out repetitive work. Roof bolting statistically has one of the highest levels of underground accidents, including finger, hand, and arm injuries. Operators are exposed to falling objects and becoming entangled in roof bolting apparatus while roughly moving awkward 6-ft drill steels and roof bolts. It is estimated that over 25 million roof bolts are installed annually in the U.S. underground coal market with well over 1,500 operators involved in roof bolting on a day-to-day basis. Recently electrohydraulic roof bolting rigs have been installed to offer partial automation of the drilling cycle and the bolting cycle. The next stage is to provide a storage and loading system to allow full automation of fullcolumn resin roof bolts. This paper reviews the latest electrohydraulic roof bolting equipment and discusses the testing of a fully automated drill rig. Full electronic control allows each step of the roof bolting process to be recorded, providing a digital record of each installation, including hole depth, spin time, gel time, torque, and cycle time. Other benefits include monitoring of water pressure and flow, used to prevent blocked drill steels as well as digital fault finding. A fully automated roof bolting machine greatly improves operator safety and gives high-quality repeatable roof bolting with reduced cycle times.

This document describes the challenging task of mining through tiebacks using a 21'-8" diameter Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) as part of the Ship Canal Water Quality Project. The mining operation involves navigating through 17 tie-backs that are evenly spaced at 8-foot intervals, with many intersecting the full face of the cutterhead. Detailed analysis and review of TBM parameters specific to this area have been conducted to ensure operational efficiency and safety. Hyperbaric interventions have been planned and coordinated, encompassing pre-mining preparations, continuous monitoring and adjustments during the mining process, as well as post-mining measures. The document highlights the complexity and importance of strategic planning and execution to successfully overcome the tie-back intersections during the mining operation.

"Speakers and attendees of the 2016 Cutting Edge Conference could not be faulted for keeping one eye on the presentations taking place at the Hyatt Regency at LAX in Los Angeles, CA on Nov. 7 and 8 and another on the results of the historic election in the United States that took place on Nov 8. While there was certainly interest in the presidential campaign, there was also a great deal of interest in Measure M on the California ballot. Measure M, which passed easily, is a half-cent sales tax increase that will fund the most ambitious transit expansion in Los Angeles County history.In the coming years, the ballot measure will transform a traffic-choked region by funding the construction of nearly a dozen new rail lines with an estimated $120 billion raised in four decades. Among the projects that could come to fruition are a twin-rail tunnels project through the Sepulveda Pass and new connections in the city.During the update on West Coast projects, Bill Hansmire summed things up with a slide asking “How much work is there on the West Coast,” and his answer was “Billions.”From Seattle, WA south to Los Angeles, there is already a lot of work for tunneling and underground construction experts, and Measure M ensures that there will be plenty of work for decades to come.Currently, The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) has three rail projects underway that were funded by Measure R in 2008 — the Regional Connector, the Purple Line subway extension and the Crenshaw/LAX Line that are designed to alleviate the traffic pressure with an eye to more solutions.Measure M is the fourth sales tax increase to fund transportation in L.A. County, bringing the base sales tax rate to 9.25 percent. Conventional and advanced coal preparation technologies were investigated through both a literature search and through direct contact with investigators and developers. In addition to a brief description of each process, performance characteristics including feedstock type, ash and sulfur reduction, thermal energy recovery and cost are provided in a tabular form. Seven of the most commonly utilized conventional coal preparation processes, including those respectively accepting coarse, intermediate and fine coal feed, were reviewed. It was found that certain properly implemented and well maintained conventional processes were capable of better than 75 percent ash removal while recovering 90 percent or more of the inherent thermal energy. Almost 50 advanced coal preparation processes were investigated based on biological, chemical and physical principles. Physical processes investigated included cycloning, homogeneous heavy media, electrostatic, high gradient magnetic, flotation and selective coalescence. Using pulverized coal as a feedstock, some of these processes are respectively reported to be capable of removing better than 95 percent ash. 95 percent pyritic sulfur, and 50 percent organic sulfur while incurring energy losses of less than 5 percent.

The financial implications of environmental liabilities are becoming staggering, particularly for mining companies. The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Record of Decision (ROD) list for Superfund mining sites has some pretty hefty financial commitments, such as the $10 million operable unit remedy for the Yak Tunnel at California Gulch (in Colorado) or the $40 to 60 million remediation at Bunker Hill (in Idaho). These costs are driven by the large volume and areal extent associated with historical waste management practices at mining sites. (It's difficult to have a low-cost remedy for a 20-square-mile site.) Unfortunately, there are other ways of generating environmental liabilities besides Superfund, such as non-compliance with Clean Air Act provisions, stormwater permits, or National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits. In the last 2 years, EPA has increased enforcement in its regulatory programs, which has resulted in increased fines and criminal actions. Leaders in other industries (primarily the chemical and manufacturing industries) are viewing environmental liabilities as a strong motivator to select engineering approaches carefully based on technical, legal, economic, and philosophical perspectives. Industry interest in waste minimization programs comes from the concept that it is economically advantageous not to create waste in the first place. Waste minimization programs typically balance increased front-end capital investment with the minimization of potential long-term environmental liabilities as a way to achieve the lowest total-or life-cycle-cost. A side benefit of waste minimization programs is that they tend to improve overall regulatory compliance. Waste management practices are also becoming philosophical, as evidenced by a May 11, 1992, Business Week article: Companies that incorporate innovative thinking on sustainable development will do more than clean up or prevent their own pollution. They'll make and distribute a product more efficiently than ever, worry about its lifelong environmental impact, plan for recycling, and get their suppliers on the bandwagon. This type of approach will require a new mind-set, new tools, and adjustments throughout the organization. A key aspect of waste minimization or life-cycle waste management programs is the incorporation of environmental costs into economic analyses that compare various waste management alternatives. However, the incorporation of environmental costs into an economic analysis can be more difficult than initially thought. As noted above, new tools-or even a new toolbag-are needed, such as new accounting methods that track and assign the true lifetime environmental costs of a particular product. One piece of the new toolbag is life-cycle cost analysis, which is discussed in this paper. To simplify the discussion, this paper looks at the total costs associated with a given mining site. The concepts presented in this paper, however, can be applied to any mine waste management decision. The ultimate extension of life-cycle costing, as presented in the Business Week article, is to include the potential environmental costs throughout the life of a metal. At this point, I am perplexed on why, let alone how, to include the potential downstream environmental costs (i.e., the costs associated with smelting, manufacturing, use, and recycle or disposal) throughout the life cycle of mined copper, lead, or zinc.

Hazen Research, Inc., has developed a new process for removing pyritic sulfur and ash from coal. Feed coal is contacted with iron carbonyl vapors, Fe(CO)5, at 190°C which puts a thin skin of magnetic material on the pyrite and ash, but does not affect the coal. Thus, low intensity magnetic separators yield a nonmagnetic coal, low in sulfur and ash, and a magnetic refuse, high in sulfur and ash. Results are given for clean coal produced by this method. A comparison is made between results of the magnetic process and the U. S. Bureau of Mines two-stage flotation process cleaning identical samples of Pittsburgh Coal. Capital and operating costs of the two cleaning methods are discussed.

Sustainable development is a principle for the way we should act in the present. It ensures also options for the future to achieve a balance between social, economic and ecology development. The efficiency of raw material utilisation is being enhanced through technological developments, starting from extraction through all the following stages of the value creation chain. The use of domestically produced resources helps to assure the technological know-how. Additional indicators being collected and published by individual companies are questionable in countries with a tightly regulated legal framework such as in Germany, but make sense in developing and threshold countries. Sustainability in terms of efficient use of raw materials will manifest itself at the next stages of the value creation chain. Examples for efficiency improvement can be found in the steel, the power generation and agriculture industries. The approval procedures for German mining operations entail an internationally extremely strict assessment of the potential impact on the environment. All the mining activities include remediation and recultivation where the practise in Germany has become model character by international levels.

This paper is a review of research and development on geothermal energy extraction in Japan especially on hydraulic fracturing. First recent geothermal developments in Japan are outlined in Part I. An increase in the production rate of geothermal wells may be highly dependent on the geothermal well stimulation technology based on hydraulic fracturing. The hydraulic fracturing technique must be developed also for geothermal energy to be extracted from hot, dry rock masses. In Part II, the research on hydraulic fracturing and field application are reviewed.

The concept of classification in wet, closed circuit ball milling is expanded beyond the performance of the classifying equipment to include all aspects of the fines removal system of the grinding circuit. Design and operating parameters that effect fines removal are identified and discussed, and a quantitative index for circuit classification effectiveness is presented.
