"Overburden strata deformation monitoring is one of the key problems in ground control. Using geophysical method through surface drilling to detect strata deformation is commonly used in the industry. In this paper, a geophysical method based on the distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) system were conducted in the laboratory, where a DOFS-based strata deformation monitoring experiment was performed with three physical models. The results show that the DOFS method precisely detects the rock mass deformation and strata structure forming with the Brillouin frequency shifts (BFS) representation. The BFS curves are divided into three phases, which reflects the horizontal three zones developed in the overburden. The BFS distribution presents a multiple stages form, the 1st stage corresponds to the caving zone and the 2nd stage corresponds to the fracture zone. Based on the multiple stages form, the evolution of the water flowing through fractured zone have been determined and the controlling effect of key strata over the water flowing fracture has been pointed out. In the end, the comparison validation proves the accuracy and reliability of this method, and it could be a new approach for the ground control research. INTRODUCTION Overburden rock strata above the work face space will propagate from slight deformation, part destruction to violent movement because of the underground coal mining. It is fundamental and an intrinsic requirement of ground control to monitor the mining-induced rock mass deformation.[1] Overburden strata have their significant mechanical behaviors and movement under damage deformation and fracture. Overburden strata deformation affect the mining ground pressure control directly, and performance in the relationship of supporting equipment and the surrounding rock, the mining-induced fracture distribution and the loss of underground water resource, the ground surface structure stability and the ecological environment.[2] From the perspective of the concept of safe and efficient scientific coal mining: the overburden strata deformation is an important part of mining method selection and reasonable supporting solutions decision which can solve the issues like the roof supporting force calculation, overburden fracture distribution and gas drainage, ground subsidence, separation of coal and rock control and top-coal recovery rate and so on. From the perspective of green and ecological mining: the overburden strata deformation is the key basis of studying the mining-induced ground subsidence and mining area ecological damage, and such engineering problem like environmental protection in mining area, ecological restoration in mining subsided land and the water conservation in fragile ecology area of mining could be solved based on it.[3-6] Therefore, the mining-induced overburden strata deformation is the key of ground control and needs to be controlled artificially."

Fly ash is a by-product generated by the combustion of coal in thermal power plants. Its disposal is a major environmental concern for these power plants. Though a considerable part of fly ash is used in cement making and brick manufacturing, a substantial quantity remains unutilized. Bentonite is commonly used as binder in the micropelletization of process waste to attain the mechanical strength required for handling and transportation. The present paper deals with the partial replacement of bentonite with fly ash in the micropelletization process without affecting the quality of the micropellets. The mechanisms of both the binders are discussed. The bonding of particles by bentonite is a physical mechanism, while fly-ash bonding is a chemical mechanism. Silica and alumina are the major constituents present in fly ash along with lime. In the presence of water, the alumino-silicates and unhydrated lime present in fly ash undergo a pozzolanic reaction and form cementitious bonds, which hold the particles together. Use of fly ash as alternative binder for bentonite has cost benefits besides providing a better utilization option for fly ash.

Pig iron nuggets were produced in a laboratory scale furnace at Michigan Technological University. These nuggets are produced from pellets consisting of a mixture of iron oxide, coal, flux, and a binder, which are heated to 1450°C.These pellets then self-reduce to produce a solid, high-density, highly metallized (96.5% Fe) pig iron. During the nugget production process, a separate slag phase forms that cleanly separates from the metal. The physical and chemical properties of the pig iron nuggets are similar to pig iron produced by blast furnaces, which is distinct from Direct Reduced Iron (DRI).

Face ventilation and water sprays are the primary controls used on continuous miner sections to protect workers from respirable coal and silica (quartz) dust. Laboratory tests were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the impact on respirable dust concentrations when increasing airflow from 3000 to 9000 cfm (1.42 to 4.25 m3/sec), water flow from 15 to 35 gpm (0.057 to 0.132 m3/min) , and water pressure from 80 to 200 psi (5.52 x105 to 1.38 x106 pa). The effective limits for each control and interactions between these controls were of particular interest. Initial analysis concentrated on defining the impact of the control parameters on the respirable fraction of the feed dust, which was a blend containing 90% coal and 10% quartz. Gravimetric sampling indicated that airflow had the most significant individual impact on respirable dust levels and resulted in reductions of 99% at the operator and 57% in the return. Regression modeling was used to predict dust concentrations at the operator and in the return. Significant interactions were observed between control parameters and often, defined the level for a control parameter where increases above that level did not significantly benefit dust control. Increasing airflow to 8400 cfm (3.96 m3/sec), water flow to 25 gpm (0.095 m3/min), and water pressure to 140 psi (9.65 x105 Pa) typically provided respirable dust reductions at both sampling locations, while optimizing use of control resources. After determining these relationships for the total respirable fraction, selected filters were analyzed for quartz content to define the impact on the quartz component of the feed dust. For the individual control parameters, airflow again had the most significant impact and resulted in reductions of 98% at the operator and 26% in the return. Regression modeling of the quartz concentrations indicated that no significant interactions between control parameters were present. At the operators location, airflow was the only parameter identified as having a statistically significant reduction for quartz dust. A reduction in quartz approaching 95% was observed for increasing airflow to 6000 cfm (2.83 m3/sec). Increases above 6000 cfm had little additional impact. In the return, a linear relationship between control parameters and quartz levels was observed with reductions of approximately 27% predicted for increasing any one control parameter to its maximum level. The synergistic impact of increasing all control parameters to maximum levels resulted in a maximum predicted reduction of 81%.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is a common and well-known health hazard in the mining environment. The current approved method for monitoring both the organic and elemental carbon (OC, EC) portions of DPM is a laboratory method with a turnaround time of approximately one week. In order to evaluate exposure levels and take corrective action before overexposures occur, a portable real-time device capable of quantifying both OC and EC is needed. To that end, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) designed and tested a device based on narrow bandpass optical filters that is capable of targeting infrared absorbance bands associated with DPM. Five optical bandpass filters were chosen based on previous work quantifying DPM using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry. The resulting device, referred to as a filtometer, is optimized to exclusively determine DPM and could serve as a cost-effective, field-portable alternative to laboratory-grade FT-IR analysis and instrumentation. Calcium carbonate is perhaps the most widely used mineral in the world. With total consumption of all calcium carbonate exceeding over 25 million tom per year, within this class of filler, a relatively smaller segment of precipitated calcium carbonates (PCC) is often misunderstood as a commodity product and bundled in the same category as ground calcium carbonate. However, each material has a distinctly digerent role and characteristics. Precipitated calcium carbonates are used to influence specific performance in a specific application whereas ground calcium carbonate is used primarily to reduce cost in many applications. In this paper, attempts are made to demonstrate the role of nano-fine-PCC in improving shear-thinning characteristics of common and specialized sealants and automotive underbody coating and how such "nano-particle" cal- cium carbonate properties can be exploited to process PVC plastics while reducing overall cost. We also review the role of precipitated calcium carbonate as "nano" material and why it must be viewed as a specialty additive.

Increasing costs, falling grades and a low gold price have caused severe problems for many of South Africa's gold mines. The need to maximise efficiency is extremely urgent. This paper describes the use of column flotation cell s to scavenge significant quantities of additional gold from flotation plant residues; in particular, very fine particles of free gold not recovered by conventional flotation. Experimental gold- specific collectors enhanced gold recovery significantly. The paper also reports the results of other plant trials, carried out on a variety of ores.

Over the last decade more than 62 miles (100 km) of civil transport tunnels were constructed in Sydney, Australia, using the sequential excavation method (SEM). The WestConnex motorway tunnels, each stage of which used over 20 roadheaders to excavate up to 40 tunnel headings, had numerous caverns up to 100 feet (30 m) wide and 82 feet (25 m) high. SEM tunnels in North America typically have far fewer active headings. This paper examines the differences in scope and risk allocation for construction phase services, including comparison of the Permit to Tunnel (PTT) process in Australia and the Required Excavation and Support process in North America.

Hanumantha Rao (Minerals & Metallurgical Processing, 2013, Vol. 30,No. 4, pp. 212-219)The formation of hydrogen peroxide from water during the grinding of chalcopyrite in a nitrogen-sparged environment, as reported by Javadi Nooshabadi and Rao (Minerals & Metallurgical Processing, 2013, Vol. 30, No. 4, pp. 212-219), is questioned on the grounds that oxidation of water by the mineral is unlikely to be thermodynamically feasible. It is argued that it is more likely that any peroxide that had been formed would have been generated from residual oxygen in the nitrogen-flushed system than from the oxidation of water.The formation of hydrogen peroxide by finely divided pyrite had been reported by a number of authors (Borda et al., 2001; Borda et al., 2003; Cohn et al., 2006; Schoonen et al., 2006; Schoonen et al., 2010; Jones et al., 2011; Javadi Nooshabadi et al., 2013). That hydrogen peroxide is formed in the presence of oxygen in solution can be comprehended from wellestablished mechanisms. Pyrite in aerated solution is known to oxidize by an anodic process that is coupled with the cathodic reduction of oxygen (Holmes and Crundwell, 2000). The latter process has been shown to occur through the formation of hydrogen peroxide (Biegler et al., 1975; Ahlberg and Broo, 1996). The pH dependence of cathodic oxygen reduction at other sulfide minerals, including chalcopyrite (Biegler et al., 1977; Rand, 1977), implies a similar mechanism at these surfaces."

Recently, liquid carbon dioxide (L-CO2) blasting technology has attracted attention due to its good fracturing effect and safety performance, especially in coal seam permeability improvement. This paper analyzes the blasting effect of L-CO2 based on experiments and studies the fracturing mechanism from the perspective of stress wave action via theoretical analysis and peridynamic simulations. The results indicate that L-CO2 blasting achieves a good fracturing effect without forming a crush zone, and the loading rate and strength of the stress wave are key factors.

As part of a study aimed at understanding the hydrology of in situ leach mining (ISLM), the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Cyprus Casa Grande Corporation and the University of Arizona, is investigating dynamic transmissivity conditions during ISLM of a copper oxide ore deposit. Spatial and temporal variations in ore zone transmissivity during two years of ISLM operations at the Cyprus Casa Grande mine are evaluated during sixteen intervals of steady-state injection and recovery well operation. Direct inversion of an analytical hydrologic model is used to obtain estimates of transmissivity at 58 well locations during these intervals. Univariate statistical and geostatistical methods are used to describe the temporal and/or spatial relationships that exist between transmissivity and other ISLM parameters, including average well injection pressure, average sulfuric acid concentration in leach solution, and the relative configuration of injection and recovery wells. Average transmissivity during the sixteen steady-state time intervals varies between 6.00 x 10-6 m2/min. (6.46 x 10-5 ft2/min.) and 3.61 x 10-8 m2/ min. (3.89 x 10-7 ft2/min.). A trend toward decreas¬ing transmissivity is evident during two year of ISLM operations. This decreasing trend is found to correlate with a decreasing sulfuric acid concentration in injected leach solution, and suggests increasing geochemical precipitation within the deposit. Geostatistical analyses reveal a dynamic and anisotropic transmissivity structure within the target ore zone, that is dependent upon spatial and temporal changes in injection pressure and well configuration.

"Within the framework of the European project NeTTUN, the Laboratory of Civil Engineering and Building Sciences of ENTPE in Lyon (France) is in charge of a large experimental campaign to investigate the impact of tunneling on neighbouring piled structures. For this study, an original reduced-scale (around 1:10) physical model of EPBS is used. This ""1g"" laboratory model is able to reproduce the main features of the excavation method. For this new experimental program, the miniature EPBS advances inside a large tank filled with a model soil (dry sand), in which instrumented piles were pre-installed. In this paper, the authors describe briefly the original 3D device and present results concerning the impact of tunneling on a single pile located above the tunnel. Different tunneling face pressure are studied in connection with the practice. Machine parameters, pile solicitations and stress-strain behavior of the soil mass monitored under real time conditions are discussed. INTRODUCTION When tunnels are constructed in urban areas, they often come close to pre-existing structures, such as pile foundations. Perturbations of tunnel construction on these neighbouring structures must be considered during design and construction of the tunnel. Ground movements due to tunnelling may induce bending moments, lateral and vertical loads, settlements and lateral deflections in the piles, which may lead to structural damage or failure of the piles or the supported structure. The interaction between piles and a tunnel in construction is a complex three dimensional problem. To date, several experimental approaches have been carried out to analyse the effects of tunnelling on piled foundations (Bezuijen et al., 1994, Loganathan et al., 2000, Jacobsz et al. 2004, Lee and Basset, 2006, Marshall and Mair, 2011, ). These different studies carried out in the laboratory on 1 g or centrifuged models aim at a better understanding of tunnel - piles interaction and a quantification of the influence of each dominating parameter on the structural responses. Parameters like foundation type (single pile, group of piles) and geometry, relative tunnel – pile position, volume loss induced by tunnelling, ground characteristics, pile loading history were considered. However, most of these experiments were carried out under plane strain conditions by modelling the volume loss due to tunnel excavation by decreasing the tunnel diameter or the radial support pressure. As a result, these models do not adequately account for the variations of settlements both in the longitudinal and the transverse direction, which can induce significant flexional and torsional effects on the structures. These effects are particularly critical and detrimental in the case of historical monuments."

Some of the practices of the mining industry that may place an undesirable stress on the groundwater environment are coming under increasing scrutiny from legislators and regulatory agencies. Among these practices are mine dewatering, the use of tailings ponds, land rehabilitation, and technological innovations such as in situ leaching of waste clumps and ore deposits. Pernichele, noting that 24 states have enacted legislation controlling to varying degrees the environmental effects of mining, has emphasized the importance of assessing the potential for damage to groundwater when evaluating, planning, and designing mining projects. 1 Illinois has enacted legislation requiring anyone opening, operating or abandoning a mine site to obtain a permit from the Illinois EPA. The law is one of the first to require regular monitoring and reporting to a control agency. Legislation has also been recently enacted at the national level that will have a significant impact on the mining industry; e. g., the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (Public Law 92-500). The stated objective of this Act is to restore and maintain the chemical, physical and biological integrity of the nation's waters. Specifically, according to Sec. 102(a), the Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is required to prepare or develop comprehensive programs for preventing, reducing or eliminating the pollution of the navigable waters and groundwaters and improving the sanitary condition of surface and underground waters. The definition of the terms "pollution" and "pollutant" is of particular significance to those who must comply with PL 92-500. The definitions are quite broad and include most of the adverse water quality effects of man's activities. As defined in Sec. 502(19), "pollution means the man-made or man-induced alteration of the chemical, physical, biological and radiological integrity of water." Within the Act, the list of pollutants includes dredged spoil, solid waste, incineration residue, chemical wastes, radioaetive materials, heat, wrecked or discarded equipment, rock, sand, cellar dirt, and industrial waste discharged into water.

Analytical models for transient groundwater phenomena, such as those of Theis, Cooper, and Jacob, are important but often limited tools for aquifer evaluation and drawdown prediction. Most were developed using simplifying assumptions which compromise their treatment of complex boundaries and most also contain functions that are mathematically complex and difficult to solve explicitly. Examples of such functions are the Bessel functions, the exponential integral, and similar well functions for leaky confined and water table aquifers. This paper describes the joint use of simple numerical techniques and numerical approximations of these functions to extend many analytical models beyond their conventional applications. The enhanced analytical methods represent many hydrologic problems more easily and realistically, permit a wider range of application, and often provide insight into the response of pumped groundwater systems without the need to resort to more complex numerical flow models. Use of the enhanced analytical methods usually requires the use of microcomputers due to the large number of computations. Examples presented here are the development and extension of type curves and the determination of drawdown distributions.

Many longwall operators experience difficulty complying with the federal regulation limiting average dust exposure. Others are currently in compliance, but the dust exposure limit keeps then from increasing their production. Spray water is a major means of dust control. Excess water can cause problems in the transportation system and the cleaning plant, and reduces the Btu value of the run of mine coal. Thus, the dust exposure reduction per unit of water sprayed must be maximized. This paper discusses underground tests recently completed as part of a Bureau of Mines research program to determine the effects of variations in spray water flow rate, pressure, proportioning and spray orientation on longwall shearers.

The theoretical relations between the strain and stress Mohr circles make it possible to establish a relation between the internal friction angle [ ] and the Poisson's ratio (v) of rocks. The internal friction angle is related to the Poisson's ratio as Sin [-] = (1 - v)/(l + v). This relation gives lower friction angle values than the triaxial Mohr envelopes and higher values than those given by surface sliding friction tests.

A detailed kinetic study of the flotation installation at the Metcalf Concentrator revealed a rougher flotation circuit operating under less than optimal conditions. Based on these results, a project was initiated to approximately double the rougher flotation capacity by increasing the installed volume from 780 cubic meters to 1,560 cubic meters. This project, which was completed in early 1991, replaced the existing cells with larger capacity cells. A comprehensive analysis of results demonstrates significant metallurgical benefits. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND The Metcalf Concentrator is located in Morenci, Arizona and is part of Phelps Dodge Morenci, Incorporated. Sumitomo Metal Mining of Arizona is a minority partner in the operation with 15% interest. The Metcalf Concentrator is the newer and smaller concentrator and operates in conjunction with the Morenci Concentrator. Operating capacity at Metcalf is currently 48,000 TPD of ore on a 365 days per year basis. The Metcalf Concentrator was commissioned in 1974 at a 30,000 TPD operating rate for the purpose of treating ores originating in the Metcalf Mine. The mine takes its name from the former town of Metcalf which was named for Robert Metcalf who was credited with discovery of the mineral district. The predominant ore mineral is chalcocite which occurs as a secondary enrichment closely associated with iron pyrite. The host rock is largely granodiorite and quartz monzonite. The original rougher flotation circuit consisted of a total of six rows of Wemco 8.5 cu. meter (300 cu.ft.) flotation machines treating pulp from the two grinding sections (Sections A and B). Each row was configured in a 4-4-4 arrangement. Shortly after startup the throughput rate was increased significantly without sustaining a recovery loss. This increase was achieved by raising the target value for the particle size of the cyclone overflow which is the rougher flotation feed. Shortly thereafter, the capacity of the pump and cyclone began to restrict further increases in throughput. After testing, two 66 cm. (26-in.) cyclones and a 12-in. X 12-in. centrifugal pump replaced the original classification equipment. As a result of these modifications, the grinding section could routinely process in excess of 42,000 TPD. Due to the increased tonnage rates, limitations in the rougher flotation circuit performance were observed. In an effort to improve the performance of rougher flotation with this higher throughput, the speed of the flotation mechanisms was increased from 230 RPM to 250 RPM. This change improved the suspension of the coarser feed and induced additional air into the pulp. It did, however, apply additional strain to the motors, shortening their life. At these elevated processing rates, it was found that the dart valves operated almost entirely at the top end of the control range and could not efficiently handle upsets from the grinding section. This was remedied by lowering the end overflow weir and allowing some of the tailings to overflow the end weir. However, in order to obtain acceptable recovery levels, the flotation pulp was maintained at a high level, adversely influencing the rougher concentrate grade.

Discussion by Stephen Semeniuk Discussion As a valuator and SME member, I view Ross D. Lawrence's position as based on unproven and faulty assumptions made with regard to the pragmatic evidence presented in his paper. Moreover, his call for the inclusion of all mineral resources in discounted cash flow valuations is redundant, if not irrelevant, as there are procedures that already take all classes of mineralization into consideration for valuation purposes. In my experience as a valuator, I find that Canadian securities regulators are more than accommodating in allowing any valuations of mineral properties to be based on cash flow calculations. In other business areas, the same regulators usually reject discounted cash flow valuations of projects or businesses with no operating history. Instead, the regulators prefer valuations to be based on other transactions tested in the marketplace. Valuations based on actual market transactions are less subjective than discounted cash flow calculations and/or the capitalization of arbitrary, untested or undemonstrated earnings projections. In the mining and minerals sector, such projections may be made by persons not qualified to make such projections. In support of this statement, I direct readers to the article "Valuation of mineral properties which do not contain exploitable reserves" by Lionel C. Kilburn, which appeared in the August 1990 issue of the CIM Bulletin. To quote from the article: "Value of a mineral property depends basically upon metal prices, recoverable grades, mining and metallurgical practices, commodity supply and demand, and political-economic conditions, all of which vary with time. Five fields of expertise influence the value of a mineral property: •geological engineering, •commodity markets, •financial markets, •stock markets and •mineral property markets. The skills of geologists and engineers properly apply to the first field of expertise. Knowledge and consideration of the other four fields is important, but such advice is more properly sought from marketing experts, economists and stockbrokers." Securities regulators have created no hardship for valuators by excluding unsubstantiated resources in discounted cash flow valuations. In the field of engineering, best design practices apply. A margin of safety is built into the design criteria for any new equipment or structure that will exceed normally expected load levels and stresses, even though such considerations imply higher front end costs. In accounting, the comparable operating principle is conservatism. It explains why, for balancesheet presentation purposes, inventory is stated at cost or market, whichever is the lowest value. Similarly, when the engineering or geoscience-based valuator plays in the field of finance, the rules of accounting and applied economics apply. Regulators in their skepticism of income-based valuations are in tune with similar views already expressed in mining literature. To quote H. Van Tingley, in Mining Magazine, July 1996: "... the DCF method has inherent dangers when applied to undeveloped resources. Firstly, it presents an often-undeserved aura of accuracy. The productivity in coal mines, measured in terns of the output per manshift depends largely on the efficiency and speed of men and materials transport between working faces and the surface. The mechanization of coal winning and material handling processes has led to a great rise in the mine productivity (1). Early applications of power in U. S. coal mines were mainly electrical. The excellent traction available with the DC motor and the ease of the distribution of the DC power have made trolley wire installations for haulage very popular. In shallow mines with very limited emissions of methane it did not constitute a major hazard but as mine depths increased and corresponding emissions of methane also increased fire and methane ignition hazards have become very serious. Conveyors have proved economic where intense mechanization of coal faces generates a large output of coal from a single face, but the fire and respirable dust hazard associated with them are no less serious. Recognizing these shortcomings, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 laid down numerous provisions for the safe use of trolley-wire haulage and conveyors (2) which generally improve safety but in some cases complicate mining operations and have decreased productivity significantly since 1969. In course of time as coal mines become deeper and hence gassier and as the emphasis on safety increases it would be inconceivable to use trolley-wire haulage under ground as already witnessed in several other countries with deep coal mines. With rising capital investments and cost of the protection against fire and respirable dust, the use of conveyors may also have to be limited to special areas, e.g. main entries.
