The purpose of this paper is to describe work undertaken, within the System Dynamics Research Group at Bradford Management Centre, into the development and application of a System Dynamics model of an international mineral industry; aimed at providing a basis for analysis of the interrelationship of supply, consumption and price over time, under different production and stocking policies. A review is presented of some of the major characteristics and problems associated with such industries. This is followed by an outline description of the model and the way it has been applied to examine various supply responses, in the light of changing consumption patterns. Demonstration results deal with model validation and with analysis of international buffer stocks and conflicting supply policies on the historic situation in the copper industry.

Our efforts at McNally, to find a better way to mechanically separate particles from liquid in a slurry have led to the development of two new centrifuges. The first unit utilizes a slotted opening screen as the filter media and retains all plus 200 Mesh and most of the 200 by 300 Mesh particles. The second unit is a solid bowl centrifuge with a novel method of removing the solids and delivers an effluent containing as little as 300 PPM solids in suspension. The first unit was designed to separate particles in the range of about 1 MM x 0 or smaller top size from the liquid slurry and produce solids having low surface moisture content, and a liquid concentrate containing a low percentage of solids. A prototype of this unit has been in the field undergoing tests for over two years. A few of these test results are shown in Tables I & 11. Testing has been mostly limited to the field of coal, how- ever this does not mean that the machine would accept only coal slurries. The machine has produced a dewatered product having as low as 5.5% surface moisture, and an effluent containing as low as 1.4% solids and handled slurries containing from 15 to 50% solids by weight.

The competitive market potential for solvent refined coal is estimated. Market advantages of solvent refined coal are enumerated. Markets are possible in combustion, railroad locomotion, and carbon electrodes. The combustion characteristics are consistent with expected air pollution restrictions on the emission of sulfur and particulate matter. A market potential of sufficient size exists to support the initiation of solvent refining in the United States. The market analysis should help fuel producers determine the advisability of their undertaking the solvent refining of coal.

INTRODUCTION My first major involvement on a rock mine slope stability project was in 1966 after I had become a principal of Golder Brawner & Associates in Vancouver, Canada. I received a request from Kennecott to evaluate two serious rock slope failures adjacent to the concentrator on their British Columbia molybdenum property near Alice Arm, BC, which was under construction. A rock slope up to 200 ft* high had been excavated at a design angle of 700. The inspection indicated that several large blocks of about 1000 cu yd each had failed on steeply inclined joint surfaces. Stability was reduced by extensive seepage caused by heavy rainfall. In addition, considerable overbreak had occurred, indicating excessive blasting had been used to excavate the slope. A program was developed to rock bolt potentially unstable blocks that could slide on dipping discontinuities. Some rock was scaled back to the inclined joints, and drain holes were drilled to reduce water pressures. The project was completed successfully and within reasonable economics. As a result of this success, enquiries were received regarding other mining projects. This indicated the potential demand for rock slope engineering. As a result, I took one month off to meet and discuss rock mechanics and slope stability with various people internationally. These included D. Coates in Canada, E. Hoek in England, K. John and L. Mueller in Germany, M. Rocha in Portugal, and the US Bureau of Mines in Denver, CO. Early misconceptions Based on involvement in projects during the next few years, it was concluded that there were a considerable number of misconceptions that existed among some geologists and mining engineers dealing with surface rock mechanics. Some of these included: • Water is a lubricant. This is incorrect. Water reduces the shear strength along discontinuities due to buoyancy, which reduces frictional strength. It also reduces the cohesion of clayey-type rocks. • The optimum pit slope angle in rock is 45°. The optimum slope angle for safety and economics is variable and is influenced particularly by structural geology, water pressures, mine blasting practices, and the depth and degree of weathering. • The flattest angle for slope stability is dictated by the angle of repose of broken rock, about 370. Where clayey-type rocks or clayey infill in discontinuities exists, failure can occur at much flatter angles, requiring flatter slopes or artificial stabilization. • Uniaxial and triaxial tests provide the necessary shear strength parameters to design rock slopes. Most failures in rock slopes are controlled by directional discontinuities. Therefore, the direct shear test is the correct test to evaluate strength parameters for most problems.

"The adsorption of collector on chalcocite has been studied in situ in aqueous solutions by applying an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images show that xanthate, such as potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), adsorbs strongly on chalcocite mainly in the form of insoluble metal xanthate, which binds strongly with the mineral surface without being removed by flushing with ethanol alcohol. The result clearly shows that the adsorption of xanthate on chalcocite is totally different from its adsorption on chalcopyrite, during which oily dixanthogen is the main adsorption product on chalcopyrite surface. AFM images also showed that increasing solution pH to 10 doesn’t prevent the adsorption of xanthate on chalcocite much and the result confirms with the fact that chalcocite floats well in a wide pH range up to 12 with xanthate being used as a collector. INTRODUCTION In flotation, the adsorption of collector on mineral surface is vital for a successful flotation process to achieve a satisfying metal recovery. Historically, many works have been carried out to clarify the adsorption mechanism of collectors on sulfides. (Gaudin and Schuhmann, 1936, Poling and Leja, 1963; Allison et al., 1972, Fuerstenau, 1982; Leja, 1982; Woods, 1984) The adsorption of xanthate on chalcocite surface in aqueous solution also attracted the interest of many researches. Gaudin and his colleagues (Gaudin et al., 1934; Gaudin and Schuhmann, 1936) studied the solubility of potassium ethyl xanthate and its reaction products in organic solvents and firstly proposed there was initially chemisorbed xanthate (X-) on chalcocite surface followed by insoluble cuprous xanthate (CuX). Allison et al. (1972) studied the reaction products of various sulfide minerals with xanthate solutions and reported that the measured rest potential of chalcocite in 6.25×10-4 M KEX solution at pH 7 was +60 mV and the reaction product of PAX on chalcocite was cuprous xanthate. Mielczarski and Suoninen (1984a, 1984b) applied the XPS and studied the adsorption of potassium ethyl xanthate on cuprous sulfide. It was reported that there was a relatively rapid formation of a well-oriented monolayer of xanthate ions followed by a slow growth of disordered cuprous xanthate molecules on top of this layer. Richardson et al. (1984) carried out an electrochemical study of chalcocite flotation with the addition of ethyl xanthate. It was proposed that cuprous xanthate and possibly cupric xanthate were adsorbed hydrophobic species on chalcocite surface due to the exchange and charge transfer oxidation reactions. Leppinen et al. (1989) applied an in-situ FTIR study of ethyl xanthate adsorption on sulfide minerals under conditions of controlled potential and they concluded that, for chalcocite, there were three different potential regions of xanthate adsorption, including chemisorption, copper ethyl xanthate formation on the surface and multilayer formation."

INTRODUCTION Rapidly increasing capacities of equipment used to load and handle material at the face require improved haulage equipment and better methods of transporting the mined materials or "muck" to the shaft or slope and out of the mine to the processing plant on the surface. Increasingly, those transportation demands are being satisfied with underground belt conveyors. Such con¬veyors provide the most readily available, most efficient, and most reliable method of carrying materials in a continuous and rapid flow from the face loading equip¬ment to the surface plant. Almost universally, belt con¬veyors are used in coal mines and those nonmetallic and metallic mines operating in relatively flat bedded deposits. Belt conveyors are available in a wide range of capacities, mainly limited by belt width, belt speed, and weight of the material to be transported. They can be used on the level, on grades, on the surface, or under¬ground. They provide a rapid and constant flow of material, transporting the material as quickly as it is mined. Length of belt conveyors is almost unlimited. Where the haulage distance exceeds the practical capacity of a single conveyor unit, two or more conveyors can be used in series. Single conveyors more than 1.6 km (1.0 mile) long are common; multiple-unit conveyors in series operation are transporting materials over distances exceeding 16.1 km (10 miles). Depending upon mate¬rials being transported, job conditions, cost of the terrain being spanned, and alternative haulage methods avail¬able, conveyors can be conceivably economical for even greater distances. Table 1 lists maximum belt speeds recommended for most materials, relating belt speeds to belt widths. Table 2 lists capacities of typical conveyors of various widths and speeds, transporting commonly mined mate¬rials of various weights. ADVANTAGES OF CONVEYOR SYSTEMS For several years after their initial introduction, belt conveyors were available only with rigid side frames or a supporting structure of steel and concrete. That con¬struction limited underground applications, due to the cost and relative inconvenience of extending or retract¬ing the belt conveyor in the confined underground environment. However, during the last 20 years, wire-¬rope side-frame belt conveyors, as shown in Fig. 1, have become widely used in underground applications. Even wider use can be anticipated with their application to the fast movement of materials in surface mining operations. Advantages of the wire-rope side-frame belt con¬veyors were realized first in panel or section belt haulage in coal mines. Soon afterward, use of those conveyors was extended to gathering and main-line haulage. The mobility of the wire-rope side-frame conveyor is the principal reason for its success. The conveyor can be extended, retracted, dismantled, moved, and reassembled easily, even in relatively confined under¬ground spaces. The intermediate structure consists of rope support stands, wire-rope side frames, wire-rope tie-off stands, and the necessary carrying idlers and return idlers. An important and very attractive feature is the ability to suspend the conveyor from the roof in an underground mine, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving more room for improved housekeeping and allowing passage of face-service equipment, haulage vehicles, and other mining equipment. The conveyor's open construction allows quick and easy visual inspection of its com¬ponents for failures or malfunctions; it also facilitates checking and correcting conveyor-belt alignment. Other advantages contributing to the attractiveness and widespread application of wire-rope side-frame conveyors in main-line, slope, and surface installations include: lower capital costs, lower installation costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced impact on idlers and belting, reduced spillage and minimal cleanup, improved conformation to undulating terrain or mine bottoms, and the ability to span most obstacles without heavy structural support. CONVEYOR CLASSIFICATIONS Underground belt conveyors are classified normally according to their function. Generally, conveyors are classified into one of four main categories: 1) Panel or section conveyors normally receive the material to be transported directly from the face-haulage equipment. 2) Gathering conveyors are secondary haulage units that usually receive material from two or more panel conveyors. 3) Main-line conveyors transport all the material mined in the underground operations to the slope or shaft. Normally, they receive the material from two or more gathering conveyors. 4) Slope conveyors generally operate in tandem with the main-line conveyor, providing continuous Table 1. The health and safety of employees, efficiency of the operating system, and production are paramount goals in underground coal mining. The section foreman assumes responsibility for making his part of the total system function to meet these goals. However, section foremen often have not been prepared to assume the full range of their responsibilities upon becoming a supervisor. This paper addresses the full range of section foreman responsibilities and concomitant authority. Management principles that must be mastered by him are presented, and performance expectations as well as criteria for their evaluation are examined. The benefits realized from effective foreman training are discussed.

Underground instrumentation and observations at longwall panels have demonstrated that the growth of main roof causes an extremely high roof weighting on the shields. It can sometimes result in catastrophic effects on the support when the roof weighting intensity far exceeds the support capacity. In this paper, a comprehensive study was conducted on characteristics of main roof breakage and its effects on shields at different locations, based on the monitored shield data, theoretical analysis, and finite element analysis. With the help of theoretical analysis and numerical modeling, stress distribution and redistribution in the main roof were analyzed in detail to define main roof failure modes and understand the maximum roof weighting intensity imposed on the shields. From this study, it was found that the effects of main roof breakage on shields are chiefly related to the shield initial setting condition and the final failure mode of the main roof.

3D modelling can be used throughout the mine lifecycle and has proven to be a powerful tool for consultants and mining companies. One of the most significant benefits of 3D models is their ability to enhance collaboration, communication, and understanding between the mine owner, design engineers, and other relevant stakeholders that have a shared interest in responsible mining and site management. Tailings and mine waste management is an interdisciplinary effort that requires effective coordination and communication between a wide range of consultants, operators, and stakeholders alike. The increased emphasis on Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) highlights the importance for mine operators to engage and communicate with all parties involved in the planning, permitting, operation, and closure of mine sites. 3D models are valuable tools that can be used for development of geotechnical conceptual models, allowing for improved design and monitoring of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs). A clear conceptual understanding of a TSFs subsurface geology and foundation characterization is essential for proper tailings management, design, and planning. Visualization with 3D modelling can simplify the interpretation of the, oftentimes intricate, mine sight subsurface settings and allows for quick and effective geotechnical conceptualization. 3D models can be used to identify data gaps, optimize field investigations, and streamline the development of numerical stability or groundwater models. They can help communicate the complex nature of subsurface and TSF interactions in a clear, concise, and accurate manner to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders. This paper discusses some of the benefits of 3D modelling in relation to geotechnical analysis for tailings management and provides methodologies for how to improve upon some methodologies that are considered industry standards.

While one may claim necessity is the mother of invention, questioning and analyzing how methods and systems can be improved is the catalyst to discovering necessities. This paper describes the development of a Windows-based interactive mine ventilation simulation software program at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). To enhance the operation of the underground ventilation system, Westinghouse Electric Corp. developed a program called WIPPVENT. While WIPPVENT includes most of the functions of the commercially available simulation program VNETPC from Mine Ventilation Services Inc. and uses the same subroutine to calculate airflow distributions, the user interface was completely rewritten as a Windows application with screen graphics. WIPPVENT is designed to interact with WIPP ventilation-monitoring systems through the sitewide central monitoring system. Data (e.g., air quantity and differential pressure) can be continuously collected from the underground ventilation remote-monitoring and control system and from the mine's weather stations (psychrometric data). Furthermore, WIPPVENT incorporates regulator characteristic curves specific to the site. The program utilizes this data to create and continuously update a real-time ventilation model. This paper discusses the design, the key features and the interactive capabilities of WIPPVENT.

Mine ventilation survey data includes generally redundant, usually inconsistent, often incomplete, and always noisy measurements. Yet, these data are essential for operational decisions and represent the foundation of any mine ventilation systems model used for future engineering analysis and design. For example, the basic ventilation network geometry can be measured with a reasonable precision, the network flows can be measured, but with significant errors, and the branch resistance factors can not be directly measured at all. The network-based, constrained weighted least squares approach, presented in this paper, advances a method for the sys tem-wide adjustment of ventilation branch measurements and the consistent estimation of global system parameters (e.g. branch flows, head losses, and resistance factors). The constraints guarantee that the adjusted values satisfy the governing physical laws: conservation of flow, conservation of energy, and the appropriate energy dissipation rule (e. g. Atkinson's RQ2). The weights allow for the proper inclusion of data with widely disparate precision, as well as offering a simple method for retiring old data as the mine changes through time. The post-adjustment sensitivity analysis presents two potentially useful forms of analysis: the identification of previously unspecified leakage branches, and the semi- automatic recommendation for future ventilation measurement campaigns. The overall efficiency of the algorithm is exemplified by the fact that a ventilation network with hundreds of branches and thousands of measurements can be routinely adjusted on a microcomputer.

"In view of the decade long decline in worldwide mine equipment productivity and with heavy economic pressures and survival at risk, improvements for those remaining in the game are essential. The latest Multifactor Productivity data for the US mining industry indicates a continuing descent with Australia on a similar course. The world’s mining industry has a fleet of over 400 large draglines moving billions of tons of material annually. The most efficient use of this equipment resource will provide a competitive advantage to those companies who are committed to improving performance. A dragline monitoring system is a requirement for optimum operations. The monitor reports the facts. Focused actions can change the facts and create improved performance. Analyzing monitor data to build knowledge and create understanding is a beginning. Understanding the key productivity indicators for dragline operations and an effective benchmarking process are the basis for improvement. There is overwhelming evidence that adopting new technologies and concepts including AC drive technology can and will bring about a step change in dragline operating cost with improved production performance.STATE OF THE MINING INDUSTRY A high altitude review of the state of the mining industry provided by a study of multifactor productivity shows a continuation of lower and lower output year on year for the capital and labor inputs applied. The story is sadly similar for both U.S. mining and the Australian mining sector. In fact, according to PwC analysts the worlds mining equipment productivity has declined 20% over the past seven years. (Lumley, 2014) Although the reasons for the continuing decline in mining productivity are varied, the need for improvement is clear. The world’s mining industry fleet of well over 400 large draglines moves billions of tons of overburden and ore (phosphate, limestone, etc.) annually.This discussion will review a few of the tools available for improved productivity in dragline operations."

The problems of slope stability in open-cast mines are examined. A criterion, the instantaneous stripping ratio, is suggested for use in the design of pit slopes and as an index of control at all stages of the exploitation of the ore body, This criterion may also be related to safety and to the maximizing of profits. Two approaches to safe design of slopes, one from the point of view of soil mechanics and the other from the point of view of rock mechanics, are described and critically compared. The effect on slope stability of the regional tectonic stress field is discussed. Explanation is given of the application of the Terzaghi effective stress concept to problems in both soil and rock environments, including possible effects when borehole deformation techniques are used to measure stresses in rock in situ.

The presence of high-grade massive sulphides near York Harbour, Newfoundland has been known since the turn of the century. In the early 1900's a small, massive-sulphide deposit was worked by conventional hand methods and yielded about 100, 000 tons of high grade copper-zinc ore. Since that time, a number of mining companies have held options on the property and an exploration adit was driven along the fourth level of the original mine. Underground drilling revealed several additional massive sulphide lenses in the range of 10, 000 to 60, 000 tons (Fig. 1). The problem facing Long Lac Mineral Exploration Ltd. when they undertook an option on the property in 1969, was to outline any possible extensions to the known sulphide lenses which were outside the reach of underground drills and to search for new ore deposits which might double the known reserves into a feasible project for development. GEOLOGY AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: The geology is typical of many massive sulphide deposits within volcanic rocks in the Canadian Shield. The sulphide pods appear to occur along a complex andesite-basalt contact. Identification of the two volcanic types is difficult since they are almost the same colour. The most direct means of identification is by the slight difference in their magnetic susceptibilities. Pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite are the main minerals in the sul¬phide lenses. The ore is massive, differing in density from the host rock by at least 1.0 gm/cc. There is little pyrrhotite or magnetite associated with the sulphides, so there is no appreciable difference in magnetic susceptibility between the sulphides and the basalt.
