Sustainability of energy supplies has been an issue of general interest for a long time. Whilst in the past the continuous productive use of natural commodities was in the fore, its compatibility with the environment and climate and ultimately also social aspects have recently gained more and more attention. Today many discussions focus on the climate compatibility of individual options to act. Fossil fuels, in particular coal and lignite, are generally challenged because coal use makes a significant contribution to global man-made CO2 emissions. The drastic increase in the consumption of fossil fuels is not explained by the fact that coal utilisation technologies are not or cannot be sustainable but rather by the growing world population and the endeavours numerous national economies trying to catch up economically. Coal is the world’s No. 1 fuel and, in the view of many experts, will keep this position also in the foreseeable future. The access to its deposits plays a significant role for the economies of the emerging countries. Consequently the aspects of energy security and economic efficiency need to be considered at eye level with climate compatibility. In Germany, however, the public acceptance of fossil fuels and of large industrial projects is in the focus of attention.

Federal regulations require the use of methane monitors on all mining machines. All machine-mounted methane monitors currently used in underground coal mines rely on catalytic heat of combustion sensors. As a comparison, although not currently approved for use on underground mining equipment, instruments with infrared sensors are evaluated in this study. Potential advantages of using infrared sensors include faster response time, long-term stability, and reduced maintenance needs. Tests conducted in the laboratory and at a full-scale model mine compare the performance of catalytic heat of combustion and infrared sensors operating under test conditions designed to simulate airflow conditions underground.

The end of an era is here. The pony-express era of industrial relations in the coal industry is ending. Those professionals who know it must end to insure the industry's future are happy, relieved, but somewhat saddened. They are sad because it did have its elements of suspense, thrills, frustrations, and at times, plain fun. The days of the Company town are ended; the wildcats are declining; violence (while a big part of today's industrial relations) is beginning-to decline. The spirit of sound industrial relations is beginning to take hold. This has to happen for the industry to compete in today's economy and it is causing major changes for those who have grown accustomed to the pony-express type industrial relations.

The Bright water Conveyance System includes 21 km of tunnels mined by two earth pressure balance Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and two slurry TBMs. The probabilistic baseline approach defined in the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) can representatively be verified by use of a comprehensive tracking system to identify face conditions that allows comparison with the baselines. The glacial geology includes a high lateral variation in soil types that, when combined with the pressurized face tunneling methods, creates challenges for documenting face conditions. Baseline tracking using spoil samples and TBM operational parameters provides information to document actual conditions and support resolution of differing site condition claims.

Reducing the number of roof fall injuries is a goal of the NIOSH mine safety research program. Central to this effort is the development of assessment techniques that will help to identify the nature of the risks associated with working under potentially hazardous roof conditions. This paper discusses a method to determine the roof fall risk using a qualitative risk analysis technique. The ability to determine roof fall risk has been a long-standing goal of safety professionals and can provide the kind of information, needed by on-site personnel responsible for worker safety, to mitigate roof fall injuries.

"Modern underground mining is becoming more complex and geotechnically challenging. The engineer uses numerical, analytical, and data-driven methods (empirical and/or experimental) or their combination to overcome these challenges. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages. Nevertheless, given the amount of innovation and experience involved in developing each of these techniques, it will be prudent to use all their benefits rather than favoring one technique over the other. Pillars are the most important support element in an underground mine. A holistic geo-mechanical solution needs to be determined to design mine pillars using a proper sequence and exact mix of the three methods. A combination of these methods, in sync, can encompass the several advantages of the three methods while eliminating their disadvantages. This paper presents a conceptual three-tier solution to the pillar design problem, to improve its design pedigree, using a proper combination of numerical, analytical, and data-driven methods. At the focus of this proposed method lies the Ground Reaction Curve (GRC) concept.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the stability analysis of underground excavations is a challenging problem, its understanding has improved tremendously over recent years through the use of improved tools and techniques. The trial and error method was replaced with more scientific methods like the empirical and analytical methods that are still in use today. Empirical methods were developed based on large data sets obtained from experiments and observations (e.g., coal pillar strength equations). Analytical methods were developed based on mechanical understanding of stability (e.g., safety factor for vertical pillar loading, Convergence Confinement Method). Improvement in computing power and numerical techniques led to the development of several numerical methods (e.g., finite difference, finite element) suitable for geo-mechanical analysis.Each of these methods have certain advantages and limitations. Nevertheless, the user is often puzzled over the proper method selection and over the proper sequence of using them. This exercise becomes more challenging when different methods are combined, where, for example, one has to estimate the pillar strength based on empirical equations (e.g., Mark-Bieniawski coal pillar strength equation), determine the factor of safety based on an analytical approach (e.g., tributary area load divided by pillar strength), and analyze pillar-strata interactions using numerical analysis (see Esterhuizen, Mark, and Murphy, 2010b).Challenges increase when current pillar design methods are designed as passive structures to balance the fixed dead weight of the overburden. This classic suspension design approach does not recognize the self-stabilizing capacity of the overburden (Frith and Reed, 2018). A practical solution to address these issues is the use of numerical analysis. However, one should always keep in mind that the numerical modelling approach may have certain practical limitations."

The Systems Conveyance and Operations Program (SCOP) is being implemented to convey tertiary-treated effluent to Lake Mead near Las Vegas, Nevada. The Reach 3 Tunnel Project is part of SCOP. The tunnel?s planned location along and across the Las Vegas Wash creates challenging tunneling conditions. A number of feasible excavation and initial support methods are being considered during the final design stage. This paper describes how the tunnel construction options were refined based on anticipated tunneling conditions and compatibility between tunnel excavation and initial support methods. A brief description of the most significant characteristics of the anticipated ground conditions is included for the purpose of discussion.

Landsvirkjun—the national electric power company of Iceland—is building the Kárahnjúkar Hydroelectric Project in eastern Iceland. Two glacial river systems will be dammed and channeled through a series of tunnels into a 690 MW underground powerhouse. The Project has a total of 73 km of tunnels to be excavated of which mosthave been completed. From three access adits, three large diameter (7.2 m to 7.6 m),main-beam, gripper-type, Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are being used to complete50-km of the waterway tunnel. Using the TBMs was a first in Iceland to excavate the complex Icelandic basalt formations, which consist of inclined layers of hard basaltic flows with weaker scoriaceous and sedimentary interbeds. Faults, fissures and dykes that frequently cross the lava flows posed both geologic and hydrogeologic difficulties to the TBM tunneling. This paper describes the extreme challenges that the men and equipment had to endure to complete the tunneling, including the harsh winter weather on the surface and the cold, abundant ground water inflows within the tunnels.

Introduction The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was passed in 1977 to put an end to the uneven environmental standards and enforcement established by various coal mining states in the US. One year after passage, the Secretary of Interior was directed to promulgate permanent program regulations implementing Title V provisions of the Act. These regulations were to form the basis for state regulatory programs under the Act and to allow states to assume primary regulatory responsibility. To implement the underground mining provision of the Act, the Secretary is directed in section 516(a) of the Act to promulgate rules. But they must take into consideration the differences between surface and underground coal mining. The regulations developed by the Secretary in 1979, with respect to subsidence control, included: • a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process; • substantive provisions establishing performance standards for subsidence control; and • provisions providing for the prohibition of mining under perennial streams, impoundments larger than 24.6 dam3 (20 acre ft), and certain public facilities and urban areas. Industry challenged the Secretary's regulations implementing the subsidence control provisions. The litigation was consolidated with all other challenges to the permanent program regulations. (Permanent Surface Mining Regulation Litigation, Civil Action No. 79-1144; D. D.C., May 16, 1980.) In two opinions dealing with the multitude of issues raised by both industry and environmental groups, the US District Court of the District of Columbia ruled against industry. It upheld the promulgated subsidence control provisions. The US Court of Appeals stayed the appeals pending the agency's review and revision of its regulations. The regulatory reform was conducted in accordance with the order from the Secretary of Interior and the President in 1981. As a result, the subsidence control regulation was revised, reproposed, and finalized in June 1983 (Federal Register). This regulation, along with others, was again challenged by environmental groups and industry. On Oct. 1, 1984, the court, after finding the Secretary's reading of the Act reasonable, upheld the 1983 subsidence regulation except for one section. On Feb. 21, 1985, in accordance with the court's ruling, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) suspended a portion of 30 CFR 817.121 (c)(2) concerning the damage correction requirement for structures or facilities and reproposed it on July 8, 1985 (Federal Register). In conjunction with a request for public comments, OSM now also seeks comments on the omission from the 1983 rule of the requirement in the 1979 rule regarding a presubsidence survey and monitoring of damage to structures. The Buick mine, located 195 kilometers (120 miles) southwest of St. Louis in the Viburnum Trend, is owned and operated by Homestake Mining Company. The mine produces lead and zinc ore from a room and pillar mining method at a depth of approximately 335 m (1 100 ft). The Buick orebody typically averages 60 to 120 m (200 to 400 ft) in width with ore thicknesses ranging from 2.4 to 36.6 m (8 to 120 ft). The mine is divided in two; the halves are referred to as the North mine and South mine orebodies. The North mine orebody contains the higher grade ore; however, the developed reserves for the South mine orebody comprise about 60 percent of the total developed reserves for the Buick property. Existing pillars represent one-third of the total developed reserves.

On Feb. 11, 2005, more than 20 mining professionals gathered in Elko, NV for a day-long round-table discussion on heap leaching. Attendees included project managers, operators and environmental professionals. They represented 10 mining organizations. Knight Piésold sponsored the special event. Its seven representatives included three staff members from the company’s Elko Operation, and one each from its Denver, Cajamarca (Peru) and Vancouver offices. The roundtable format was chosen to allow people from the mining industry to share ideas and experiences in an open forum. Rather than presenting prepared talks, spontaneity was encouraged. This resulted in a lively and enjoyable discussion.

Author?s note: Diversity in practice exists in the application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for purchase price allocations with respect to the recognition of Value Beyond Proven and Probable Reserves or VBPP, as defined by the Emerging Issues Task Force (EITF) in EITF 04-3: ?Mining Assets: Impairment and Business Combinations?. This diversity appears to arise from differing interpretations of what constitutes sufficient information to value components of VBPP in business combinations. Concerned with this diversity in practice, respected members of the mining community formed a working group which prepared an issues paper that discussed this diversity and provided recommendations for recognition and valuation of VBPP in business combinations. The working group then submitted this paper to the EITF, requesting further guidance be issued on the concept of VBPP. In conjunction with the submission to the EITF, the working group also provided this paper to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for review and comment. The EITF discussed this issue at its May, 2008 agenda committee meeting. However, it declined to add this topic to the EITF agenda for further consideration. Absent additional guidance on VBPP from the EITF, the working group submitted a proposed definition of VBPP to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for its consideration. The following article, which is consistent with the issues paper that was submitted to the EITF and the SEC, discusses the components of and valuation techniques for VBPP. The correspondence with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which includes the proposed definition of VBPP by the working group, is attached as Appendix 1 to this article.

Interest in the western oil shales of the US began in about 1908, with the first retort in Colorado constructed in 1917. The most successful early developments were near Elko, NV, where the Catlin Shale Products Co. produced more than 1.9 dam3 (12 000 bbl) of shale oil during 1920-1924 and at Rulison, CO, where a US government operation produced about 570 in 3 (3 600 bbl) of shale oil during 1926-1929. Plentiful low-cost crude oil was developed about this time and shale oil was of little or no interest until after World War II. From 1944 to about 1972, several companies, and the US government, operated shale oil mines and recovery plants in Colorado. While technical successes were achieved and an estimated 40-56 clam' (250 000-350 000 bbl) of shale oil were produced, economics were not favorable and commercial production was not achieved. In recent years domestic production of crude oil supplies has not kept pace with US consumption. The growing shortfall has been met with imports. The cost of imported oil has continued to escalate and increased US dependence on petroleum imports are national concerns, because of the negative impact on US balance of payments and an increasing dependence on other nations for US energy needs. In 1978, petroleum imports equaled about 44% of demand, up from 23% in 1970, but down from 48% in 1977 because of availability of Alaskan North Slope crude oil. Reduced domestic consumption and other factors have reduced current imports to about 40-45% of de¬wand-but at ever increasing cost. The growing shortage of crude petroleum and its increasing cost have resulted in renewed worldwide interest in oil shales. In the past, the main obstacle to oil shale development (progress toward commercial production) has been economics-shale oil cost too much to develop and thus could not compete with conventional petroleum crudes. Even with today's inflated energy prices, some experts say the production of synthetic crude oil from oil shale is, at best, marginally economic. The mine sites of K+S are distributed all over the world producing mainly potash and magnesium salts and rock salt. Focus is on the sustainable use of the natural deposits in order to stay competitive. For this reason a raw material policy, both national and international, is necessary to ensure access to new mineable deposits which are still available in Germany. Further on, knowing market conditions is a must for sustainable development. At least sustainability and resource efficiency in potash and rock salt mining are achieved by constantly developing new technologies as well as optimizing the organization and improving qualification of workers."

INTRODUCTION Measurement of certain data associated with nuclear testing necessitates the reception of waves at the instrument location which are unaffected by reflection off internal structures or tunnel surfaces. Therefore, in order to provide necessary facilities for the fielding of experiments in support of the underground nuclear testing program, the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) commissioned a cost and feasibility evaluation pertaining to the design and construction of large underground cavities in Rainier Mesa. The effort included research into past experience pertaining to the excavation and support of large underground caverns, assessment of the geological conditions which exist in Rainier Mesa, preliminary design of the chambers and their rock support systems based upon the geological setting, development of mining plans for the excavation of the caverns, and estimation of the cost and manpower schedule to complete construction. This paper summarizes the results of the feasibility evaluation. The investigation was limited to modified hemispherical configurations ranging in size from 24.4 to 91.4 m (80 to 300 ft) in diameter. Two cavity support systems were considered. The first employs internally installed rockbolts as the means of primary rock support while the second involves the use of annular tendon galleries located above the chambers from which primary support members are introduced prior to general excavation. The internal support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 24.4, 36.6, 48.8, and 54.9 m (80, 120, 160, and 180 ft) while the external support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 54.9, 73.2, and 91.4 m (180, 240 and 300 ft).

A super-conducting high gradient magnetic separator with matrix vibration in dry separation mode is a powder purification device, which has been used to remove weakly magnetic impure particles from fine calcite powders below 53 µm in this study. A fundamental question concerned is the evolution of the matrix clogging under gas-solids loads. This paper presents the improvement of the separation selectivity using a method of mechanically based vibration on the matrix in the separator. The functions of the matrix vibration are discussed. The results indicated that the mechanically based vibration on the matrix within a high intensity magnetic field while a feed was introduced in an air stream, was found to be effective for the dry purification of fine powder materials.

A multiyear, comprehensive study of flotation reagents used in phosphate beneficiation was conducted. The study involved the evaluation of pure fatty acid compounds, comparison of various anionic collectors and testing of iso-acids. Various C12 to C22 fatty acids were tested as Florida phosphate collectors. The saturated fatty acids were found to be very poor collectors when using the standard conditioning procedure, whereas the unsaturated C16 to C22 fatty acids showed fair to good phosphate collecting ability. The C18 fatty acids oleic, impure oleic and linoleic and the C20 eicosenoic acid were shown to be the best phosphate collectors. The best flotation results were obtained using Liqro GA tall oil and oleic acid. Four isostearic/iso oleic acid type fatty acid collectors were compared with a commercial grade oleic acid and with Liqro GA tall oil as phosphate collectors using standard laboratory conditioning and flotation procedures. The most selective collector evaluated was Century 1108, a high isostearic acid-type reagent. However, it was concluded that this excellent-performing reagent was too expensive for commercial use. Overall, the most promising reagent was probably Century MO-5. This collector is essentially an iso-oleic acid/stearic acid mixture (not isostearic acid), and it costs much less. This program laid a sound foundation for developing single collector, all anionic flotation processes.
