Molybdenum, the 42nd element in the periodic table, is now a very important metal in industry of the United States and the world. Chemically, it is a very complex element having valences of 0, +2, +3, +4, +5, and +6, and can exist as a mixture of these valences in many compounds. It was discovered and separated by Scheele in 1778. At the present time, molybdenite is the only important commercial source of molybdenum. Molybdenum occurs in some 12-14 different recognized minerals, but practically all of the production is molybde¬nite. As late as 1915, it was considered a rare metal. Germany made extensive use of it during the first world war, which resulted in the establishment of a molybdenum industry in the United States at Cli¬max, Colo., in 1917. It was not until the mid-1920s when its introduc¬tion to steelmaking developed for the US automobile industry that the metal gained important acceptance. The first notable example was the Willis-Saint Claire automobile introduced in 1921 by C. Harold Willis, formerly chief metallurgist for Ford Motor Co. Molybdenum has also been produced in the US from wulfenite (PbMoO4) from Arizona and Nevada, and a small amount of molyb¬denite was produced up to the early 1970s as a coproduct from two molybdenum-bismuth mines in Quebec, Canada. The first byproduct production of molybdenite from a copper con¬centrating operation was achieved at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, and was followed shortly by the Utah division of Kennecott Copper Co. in the mid-1930s. This section of the Handbook is divided into four main subdivi¬sions: Chapter 2, which deals with the concentration and recovery of molybdenite from primary molybdenum ores; Chapter 3, which deals with the recovery and separation of molybdenite as a byproduct from copper production; Chapter 4, which deals with the conversion practices employed for converting molybdenite to the oxide or metal form; and Chapter 5, which covers the uses of molybdenum in steel¬making, chemicals, pigments, lubrication, catalysts, etc. The Free World molybdenum production, for the past eight years from all sources, is shown in Table 1. 2. Primary Molybdenite Ores General In 1978 there were four primary molybdenite recovery plants in operation: Climax, Endako, Quests, and Henderson. For over half a century the Climax mine has been by far the largest and most important source of molybdenum in the world. During the early 1970s a few primary molybdenite mines in British Columbia were shut down due to adverse economical conditions. The largest of these was British Columbia Molybdenum, formerly owned by Kennecott Copper Corp. The Climax plant and operations are described in detail and the opera¬tions of the other plants are summarized following a general discussion of recovering molybdenite from primarily molybdenite ores. Recovery of molybdenite as a byproduct will be taken up in Chapter 3. Geology Molybdenite production from mines in which it is the sole or preponderantly important mineral is confined to ore bodies in granites or igneous-type rocks or pegmatite dikes. More than one state of mineralization is sometimes present as at Climax, York, Hardy, and Questa. In the case of Climax, important byproduct recovery of tung¬sten, tin, pyrite, and monazite is also attained. The molybdenite is commonly disseminated very finely in the siliceous granitic gangue but does occur in stringers and blebs in silicified mineral solution channels. Treatment of Primary Molybdenum Ores All primary molybdenum ores are low in molybdenite, the content ranging from less than 0.20% MoS2 to a high of about 0.40% MoS2. A high resistance to grinding is a common ore characteristic combined with a habit of very fine dissemination of molybdenite in the siliceous portion of the ore. Because of low MoS2 content, high hardness, and fine dissemination of molybdenite in primary ores, it has been necessary to develop a special mill treatment which yields an accepta¬ble recovery at a reasonably low milling cost. Essentially, the treatment consists of intensive rougher flotation at a relatively coarse grind with production of a low grade rougher froth containing a substantial percentage of the molybdenite in the form of low grade middling particles, followed with multistage regrinding to liberate the locked molybdenite and several stages of flotation cleaning to produce a finished grade concentrate. Rougher flotation on pulp ground to ap¬proximately 35 mesh is common practice, even if complete liberation of molybdenite from siliceous gangue may require regrinding to 200 mesh. The flotation of middling particles with a very low content of molybdenite in the rougher flotation step has been made possible by the application of a combination of reagents first developed at the Climax mill and used with some modification in the treatment of all primary molybdenum ores. Prior to April, 1961, the coal charge to Clairtonts coke oven batteries was 3" x 0" mine waslied coal having approximately 6.0% to 7.0% moisture. Even at this size and moisture content, the arching, rat-holing and hang-up was excessive and the effective live storage of coal was only 60% to 70% of the rated capacity of the coal bunkers, depending upon the moisture of the coal. In addition, many production delays were encountered in the time and methods required to fill the larry cars. The need for an improved metallurgical coke led to the introduction of pulverized coal to a portion of the plant in 196 1. When the full potential of the pulverizing equipment was realized, we were able to serve seven batteries in our second unit of batteries with pulverized coal through two coal bunkers. The discharge hoppers of these bunkers were equipped with air vibrators to assist the flow of pulverized coal into the larry cars. The vibrators were helpful in this respect but required considerable maintenance and caused damage to the bin plates.

This chapter discusses the necessary construction techniques for installing coal mine ventilation devices. Included in the discussion are the major air controlling devices called over- casts, regulators, stoppings, and doors. Under-casts, although a valid device, are used infrequently in coal mining and are not discussed here. Typically, coal mines require a great many ventilation devices to control the air movement. Post-I969 mines have had to design their air systems to comply with the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (CMHSA) as discussed in Chap. 1. Pre- 1969 mines have had to redesign major portions of their systems to comply with the basic components of the law such as separation of air courses, single unit split ventilation, and minimum air quantities. It is not uncommon, therefore, to find a large mine (2.0 Mt/a) requiring several hundred overcast installations (permanent, as well as repeat construction), plus doors and regulators placed among a thousand or more stoppings. When each of these devices is subject to leakage from installation and weathering defects, the importance of effective construction becomes evident. An historic rule of thumb for average mine ventilation says that about 70% of all the air pressure generated by the mine fan is lost between the portal and the working faces. Of course, this rule is subject to many factors, but the message is clear: there is a tremendous inefficiency in controlling leakage through common air devices. This chapter strives to present a standard approach and design alternatives which can go a long way in reducing this leakage, and hence, ventilation costs. Historically, mine ventilation has progressed from natural, or draft ventilation, to fire-induced ventilation (Fig. l), furnace-fired centrifugal fans and finally, to today's modem mine fans. Underground controlling devices have been in use in the coal mines since the late 1600s, but the CMHSA of 1969 was the real turning point for mine ventilation. Minimum quantities and velocities of fresh air were required for mining, forcing coal operators and engineers to reevaluate and improve their systems. As a consequence, the cost for ventilating air increased. Today, companies face a variety of choices among design alternatives, materials, labor, and costs of ventilating devices for their mines. The best approach for any individual company or mine is determined by (1) the needs of the mine, and (2) the local design parameters. In my discussions of ventilation construction I shall be fairly general in terms of device installation steps, where specifics are warranted for clarification, I will include this information.

Productivity achievements in underground coal mining over the past ten years highlight the improvement of management practices as well as the adoption of new technology. Research findings and results from operational studies characterize the aspects of good management that translate into high productivity. In concert with these findings, the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) is being developed, under co-sponsorship of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the West Virginia University Energy and Water Research Center, as a knowledge-based system to enhance more efficient management of underground coal mines. Concentrating on capturing the intricate knowledge needed to manage a mine effectively, MMSS will encompass information and rules on work scheduling, desired work practices, regulations impinging on operations and planning, responses to operating problems, and the labor-management work agreement.

Sodium is a silver-colored metal that is so unstable that it reacts violently in the presence of water, and chlorine is a greenish-colored gas that is dangerous and lethal. Yet the combination of these two elements forms sodium chloride, commonly known as salt, which is a white-colored compound essential to life itself. Salt is perhaps the only mineral in the world that is used virtually by every human being in every country. Although its importance has diminished over time, salt has had a profound influence on history. Sources of salt have determined the location of cities, such as Salzburg, Austria, Salzgitter, Germany, Salt Lake City, UT, and Saltville, VA. Populations have migrated in search of salt, and wars have been fought to obtain or to protect it. Although there is no written record of when prehistoric man first discovered salt, he probably instantly appreciated its unique and distinctive taste and sought more of it. He noticed animals were attracted to salt springs and salt licks, where they satisfied their innate cravings. Man used this knowledge to hunt for food; where he found the salt, he would find the animals. Because prehistoric man was not aware of his physiologic need for salt, he automatically received his salt requirements from the meat of the animals he ate. A Mesopotamian tale tells of a wounded pig that ran into the ocean and drowned. After being recovered from the ocean, where it was saturated in the salt brine, the pork was found to taste better than unsalted meat. It was not until man graduated from a nomadic to an agricultural society when he introduced vegetables and cereals into his diet that he realized he needed additional supplements of salt. The Sumerians ate salted meat and used salt to preserve food about 3500 BC. In approximately 1000 BC, the Trojans learned to use salt for preserving fish. The maritime civilizations, such as that of the Phoenicians, engaged in an extensive salt trade throughout the Mediterranean. Many superstitions, customs, and traditions surround the religious, social, economic, and political aspects of civilization. Although some commodities have provided the basis of some ageless metaphors and cliches (i.e., heart of gold, strong as steel, etc.), none are more commonly used than those pertaining to salt. Being "the salt of the earth" referred to a person's worthiness, as referenced in Matthew 5:13 of the Bible. Someone "not worth his salt" reportedly was used in ancient Greece in bartering salt for slaves. When a laborer was worth his salt, he was paid a salary (sal is Latin for salt), a term still in use today that dates back to Roman times when part of a soldier's pay was salt rations. Fearing those around him, the Roman leader Pompey was known to add a grain of salt to his drinks as a supposed antidote to poison. Hence, "taking it with a grain of salt'' is to regard something with suspicion. The earliest known record of salt production was in China about 2000 BC when Emperor Yu decreed that salt had to be supplied to the court as a tribute. Because salt was a commodity that had universal demand, governments often intervened to control salt production and distribution to generate revenue for major national projects. State-run salt monopolies were common in history, such as in Rome about 506 BC. Revenue was also derived from taxes levied on salt sales. The word gabelle refers to the direct salt tax used in France. This tax was so despised that it was a major cause of the French Revolution. Although the tax was repealed in 1790, it was reinstated in 1805 to raise revenue for war. France continued to used the gabelle until 1945. Salt making was an important economic activity in many areas of the world. Archaeological evidence indicates that salt was quarried from hills near the Dead Sea before the Bronze Age. At Hallstatt in the eastern Alps of Austria, rock salt was mined as early as 1400 BC. Solar salt was being produced in the northern Yucatan peninsula by the Mayan civilization from about 50 BC to AD 300. Other than the prehistoric use of salt in the southwestern part of the United States by the Native Americans, the first production of salt by American colonists began in June 1614 on Smith's Island, VA, seven years after the founding of the Jamestown colony. The short-lived activity was in response to the high price of salt being charged by ship's captains who brought salt over as ballast from England. Although Nathaniel Loomis is credited with starting the first commercial inland salt production in the United States at Onondaga Lake in New York in 1790, salt had been made by individuals for private use years earlier. Indians had long known of the salt springs in the Kanawha Valley of Virginia (now known as West Virginia). In 1755, Mary Ingles, a white settler, was kidnapped by Indians and was forced to make salt from the saline springs. After her escape, she told other settlers how to make salt. At Saltville, VA, Arthur Campbell began making salt in 1782 by boiling brine obtained from salt springs. In 1799, William King sank a shaft about 3 m in diameter down about 61 m to the underlying Saltville salt deposits. The shaft flooded before he could extract any rock salt; however, King has the distinction of digging the shaft of the first salt mine in the United States. Fig. 1 shows the King site as it appears today in Saltville, VA. Production of brine from the shaft continued until 1892. Settlers moved into the Kanawha Valley in 1785, but it wasn't until 1806 that Elisha Brooks established the first commercial salt works in Kanawha.

As diesel exhaust contains a mixture of several materials of varying degrees of toxicity which interact to a currently undefined extent in their effects on health, the prescription of a quantity of ventilating air to dilute the exhaust to a safe level is necessarily, to some extent, arbitrary. Some jurisdictions rely on the application of a safety factor to a single "governing" component (usually nitric oxide for most modern diesel engines). Others specify that the total of the "adjusted" concentrations (actual concentration divided by maximum permissible concentration) not exceed "one" for related constituents (irritant gases for example). Neither of these approaches, however, takes account of the interaction of the gaseous constituents with diesel soot (although many studies verify such interactions), nor do they provide any economic incentive for reducing pollutants which are not included in the criteria for ventilation. Because of these factors, the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources awarded a contract for a study of the current literature bearing on the "Health Implications of Exposure of Underground Mine Workers to Diesel Exhaust Emissions" (1). One goal of this study was the formulation of a new ventilation criterion. The contractors, Ian W. French and Associates, studied more than 1500 literature citations which they interpreted in a 350 page report and summarized in a companion 1600 page annotated bibliography. In the recommendations section of the report, they defined a new 'health effects index' or ventilation criterion "V" as follows: [ ] The contractors consider that a "V" between 3.0 and 4.0 poses a moderate threat to health which could be alleviated by the use of protective equipment such-as filter helmets. If V exceeds 4.0, an increase in ventilation quantity to reduce the pollutant levels is indicated. In the case of mines with a quartz content in excess of 20% in the ore, the contractor recommends that a term. [Quartz]/ [Threshold Limit Value Quartz] be added to the equation, and [2.0 = ?v? = 30] be the range justifying protective equipment, with added ventilation if "v" exceeds 3. A degree of pragmatism was inherent in the development of the equation, as the contractors recognized that the components of the index, if it is to be useful in the near term, should be within current routine underground environmental assay capability.

The term "finite element analysis" is heard and seen in print a great deal these days; a few words on what precisely it is are in order. In the broadest sense, finite element analysis is an application of an idea developed by a nineteenth century mathematician named Rayleigh. His basic idea was to decompose any problem in mathematical physics into a large number of simpler problems, solve the simpler problems, and then put those solutions together to form an approximation to the solution of the original problem. The scheme works nicely because of two features: first, much of the difficulty in solving practical problems of mathematical physics stems from irregularities in the boundaries and the simpler problems can be chosen with regular boundaries and second the smaller problems are solved for small physical areas where simple approximations of the solution do not differ much from the true solution. In the narrower sense, in which we are now interested, finite element analysis is a technique of using imaginary simple structural elements to construct analytical models of real structures. A direct parallel with the Rayleigh approach exists since the "finite elements" have simple boundaries and are restricted to simple behavior within a single element. Although the correspondence between Rayleigh's ideas and finite element analysis is now widely recognized, the computational tool, as it has developed over the last thirty years, comes not from the discipline of physics but rather from that of structural engineering. A massive slide at Bingham Canyon wiped out a side of the pit and covered the main haul road in and out of the pit. All pre-slide mine designs and schedules were no longer valid. New designs and schedules needed to be developed quickly to provide management with information regarding the immediate post-slide production potential and the time needed to ramp back up to full production. At the time of the slide, an effort was already underway to convert Bingham?s in-house Medium Term Scheduling Process to MineSight®?s Schedule Optimizer (MSSO). One of the main reasons for doing this was to reduce the time needed to produce Medium Term Schedules at Bingham, which involves a complex shovel-based scheduling approach with shovel productivities based on shovel type and the types of mining cuts to which the shovel is assigned over each planning period. The objective of the schedule was to maximize shovel usage, satisfy mill feed requirements of four SAG mills with variable milling rates, and have flexibility in setting truck constraints. This paper will describe how the new MSSO-based mine scheduling process met the challenge of producing new schedules for Bingham in a minimal amount of time.

The application of microwaves has a demonstrated potential for the ultimate removal of water from fine coal. The principle of microwave drying of fine coal is based on the selective absorption of microwaves by water. Coal is a poor absorber of microwaves. As a result, water can be removed from fine coal by selectively heating water molecules. One of the difficult problems drilling microwave heating is the exact determination of temperature in the core of the materials. The electromagnetic energy absorption in coal/water mixtures during microwave drying is controlled by several factors including the dielectric properties of the constituents. In this paper the dielectric properties of various ranks of coal are presented as a function of frequency and moisture content. The measured dielectric data are incorporated into electromagnetic and thermal models of coal which predict the energy absorption and temperature distribution during microwave heating.

Remarks of Aurel Goodwin, Chief, Division of Health, Metal and Nonmetal Mine Safety and Health, Mine Safety and fEealth Administration, U. S. Department of Labor, before the Society of Mining Engineers of the AIME, Littleton, Colorado, on October 18, 1979. I appreciate this opportunity to speak before the Society of Mining Engineers of the AIME. The topic of my presentation is the Mine Safety and Health Administrations's (MSHA) concern and obligations with regard to asbestiform minerals. Asbestiform minerals - the magical group of hydrated, silicate minerals which possess a fiber like structure capable of being woven, like and into cloth. Their unique combination of properties, such as resistance to heat and chemical attack, high tensile strength, and flexibility was recognized centuries before Christ. Pausanias, the early Greek geographer, speaks of golden lamps made about 430 B.C. with incombustible wicks of "Carpathian flax." The Romans used asbestos as cremation clothes to conserve the ashes of deceased persons of rank. Charlemagne had an asbestos table cloth that he used to pass through fire to clean (1). Early recognition of the health hazards associated with exposure to asbestos was documented in the first century by Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist, and Strabo, a Greek geographer. Bath wrote of slaves with sickness of the lungs, whose occupation was that of weaving asbestos into cloth. This concern for the health of asbestos workers disappeared over the ages.

One of the most difficult tasks associated with placer mining is the sampling of the deposit. More placer projects have failed due to inaccurate assessment of the reserves than to any other reason. Within the realm of placers, those containing valuable minerals with a high unit value .are more difficult to sample than those with larger bulk, lower unit value minerals. Some items to consider when sampling a placer deposit are as follows: A) A relatively large size sample is needed for accurate valuation of the ground being tested. Placers are composed of many sizes of gravel which makes a representative sample difficult to obtain. B) When sampling placers for high unit value minerals such as gold, any error in mineral content of the sample will be magnified in the calculation of reserves.

"The key technologies of a large rectangular pipe jacking machine with dimensions of 10.12m × 7.27m (width x height) include selection of rectangular cross-section cutting modes, analysis on the strength and stiffness of the rectangular shield, integrated control of electro-hydraulic proportional thrust systems and ground conditioning for excavation are presented in detail in this paper. These key technologies have been successfully applied and verified on site during tunneling, providing a new concept for the building of large rectangular traffic and pedestrian tunnels in urban areas for the future.1 INTRODUCTIONIn the past, underground tunnels were mainly used for drainage, sewage, utilities, metro tunnel, etc. and most of them had circular cross-sections. Recently, as a result of economic development, gradually accelerating urbanization process and diminishing ground space, underground tunnels have already become a new trend for urban underground space utilization. Due to the heavy traffic flow, the demands for rectangular cross-section underground tunnels, such as pedestrian underpass and road tunnel, are increasing gradually.The Rectangular pipe jacking machine (hereinafter referred to as RPJM) was firstly developed in Japan for the construction of metro station, pedestrian underpass, underwater tunnel by-passes, etc. Kazunaki Kawai et al. introduced a RPJM developed and manufactured by KOMATSU in 2002 [1]. Tosikazu Kubota et al. confirmed the rectangular tunnels’ superiority to circular tunnels with regard to larger inner cross-section and lower construction cost in their RPJM construction reports [2]. Compared to circular pipe jacking machines, a RPJM also has the merits of a higher inner tunnel space utilization ratio and is able to excavate in shallow overburden areas. As shown in Figure 1, the effective area of a rectangular tunnel is more than 20% higher than that of an equivalent circular tunnel."

Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is an excellent material choice for a broad spectrum of corrosive fluids and, in many cases, offers the best value per dollar. FRP Flanges present the greatest design challenge of all standard piping components. The theory underlying the design of flanges is very complex. In addition, due to the nature of FRP material, proper fabrication of the flanges is as critical as the design. In this review, the challenges of making FRP flanges along with the design techniques and best practices of fabrication that will lead to a high-quality flange will be discussed.

SURFACE SUBSIDENCE IN MINING The consequences of subsidence are becoming progressively more serious as the consumption of an ever- increasing quantity of minerals conflicts with the needs of an expanding population for surface land area. The inevitable result will be an increase in the amount of land area on which undermining is restricted because surface subsidence must be prevented. Designation of land areas that may be undermined, provided that subsidence is controlled and kept within specified limits, also will increase. The decisions as to which land is to be used for urban, agricultural, or other purposes clearly involve considerations that go far beyond the scope of mining technology. Under the authority assigned to the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) by the Organic Act (May 16, 1910) and its succeeding amendments and pursuant regulations (30 U.S.C. 1-1 1 ), the Bureau conducts scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and its related problems. Subsidence-control demonstrations that have been conducted under this authority include projects in Wyoming, West Virginia, Illinois, and the Pennsylvania anthracite region. The problenls for technology arc to devise methods for extracting minerals with controlled subsidence in varying geologic settings and for calculating or predicting the amount, extent, and characteristics of the subsidence that accompanies the extraction of our principal minerals mined by high-tonnage methods so that logical choices can be made from the possible alternative approaches. Where underground minerals and fuels are mined and removed, the voids that are created underground generate strong imbalanced stresses in the surrounding and overlying rock strata. The resulting readjustments in the rock masses may cause subsidence of the ground surface. Subsidence implies vertical collapse, because the most conspicuous component of movement is downward. However, the downward component is accompanied by differential horizontal strains that may be more damaging to man-made surface structure.; than the more apparent vertical displacements. SUBSIDENCE CONTROL The most widespread method of alleviating potential subsidence problems in undermined areas has been to backfill mine voids with mine refuse or some other in- expensive material that provides lateral support to the remaining mine pillars and vertical support to the mine roof and overburden. Most USBM backfilling work has been conducted jointly with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources in the anthracite region of northeastern Pennsylvania. These joint projects were conducted under the authority of the Anthracite Mine Drainage Control Act of July 15, 1955 (Public Law 84-162, as amended), and the Appalachian Regional Development Act of 1965 (Public Law 89-4. as amended). In addition to the Appalachian and mine-drainage projects, the Bureau has either conducted or participated in demonstration projects to develop the "pumped- slurry" method of backfilling mine voids. Three of these projects were conducted in Rock Springs, WY. The first was a field test of the pumped-slurry technique, conducted in 1970 under the combined participation of the City of Rock Springs, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Dowell Div. of the Dow Chemical Co., and USBM (Candeub, Fleissig, 1971). The objective was to demonstrate that a large quantity of sand could be hydraulically injected under pressure through a single borehole, and that filling of the mine voids would be essentially complete. In the earlier "blind-flushing" methods, involving sluicing material through boreholes by gravity, quantities per injection hole ranged from 15 to 765 m3 (20 to 1000 cu yd), and the mine voids were only partially filled. In the first test of the pumped-slurry method, approximately 14 900 m (19,500 cu yd) of sand were injected success- fully through a single borehole. Subsequent information obtained through 43 monitoring boreholes indicated that mine voids below 11 330 m2 (2.8 acres) had been filled. As a result of the successful initial test of the pumped-slurry process, USBM conducted additional backfilling demonstration projects using the new technique. The first full-scale demonstration was carried out in the Green Ridge section of Scranton, PA, between 1972 and 1974. This project proved the feasibility of using the new hydraulic-injection technique to back- fill dry mine voids, as well as flooded voids, and it demonstrated that crushed anthracite refuse could be used as easily as sand in the process. Stabilization was pro- vided for about 202 300 m2 (50 acres) of Scranton, having a population of approximately 1000. Additional demonstration projects at Rock Springs, WY, between 1973 and 1975, resulted in the stabilization of about 364 200 m2 (90 acres). The work was necessary to preserve the physical and economic well- being of the city, because there have been numerous occurrences of subsidence during recent years. A demonstration project completed in 1976 in Rock Springs brought the total stabilized area in that city to 647 500 m2 (160 acres). At a cost of about $3,000,000, a population estimated at 7000 persons and property values exceeding $18,000,000 were protected. Presently. USBM is participating in subsidence- control projects involving backfilling in Pennsylvania, Illinois, and West Virginia. Eleven demonstration projects were in progress by USBM in 1977-eight in the Pennsylvania anthracite region and three in bituminous areas of West Virginia (one) and Illinois (two). The estimated total property value is over $100,500,000, and the total cost of the projects is expected to be nearly $20,000,000. The demonstration projects are designed to adapt the pumped-slurry technique to a variety of subsurface conditions, to increase efficiency, and to reduce costs.

"INTRODUCTION Abstract Tankhouse iron control through application of new treatment technology to mitigate conventional bleeding losses is considered. Implementation is discussed and the treatment economics explored. A representative case is assessed. Treatment benefits and application drivers for specific scenarios are noted. Background Hydrometallurgical ore processing has become a significant metal extraction/production avenue in recent decades. In copper mining; the focus for this examination, around 25% of global primary copper production and nearly 50% of US production result from various hydrothermal leaching extraction approaches coupled to Solvent Extraction/Electrowinning (SX/EW) metal production. Generally such processing is favored over pyrometallurgical processes for lower ore grades and as such is finding growing use and is expected to remain a key processing route looking forward with average world-wide ore grades falling as known ore reserves become exhausted. Target Problem And Motivation In hydrometallurgical processing the production circuit may be thought of as a chain of interlocked recirculation loops (Figure 1). Leaching dissolves the target metal from the ore along with other ore components which contaminate the Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS). Iron is a common component in copper ores and, as a result, occurs fairly ubiquitously in copper Pregnant Leach Solutions (PLS) generated by leaching. Leached components migrate through the production circuit from left to right (Figure 1) through a net combination of chemical and mechanical transport mechanisms. Selectivity at the recirculation loop interfaces tends to retard rejected component migration through the production process. As a result, overall relative contaminant migration fluxes are slower than the target metal (copper) and the contaminants tend to build up relative to copper in the more upstream portions of the processing circuit over time with iron often being a significant contaminant. Further, while copper is continuously removed from the system in appreciable amounts, little contaminant exit occurs and the absolute contaminant amounts and concentrations also increase throughout the EW circuit over time."

A quantitative evaluation of damage caused by ground motions associated with strong roof caving is presented. The strong roofs are modeled as either cantilevering or bridging beams over continuous elastic foundations that are subject to an exponentially distributed vertical stress. Major factors influencing roof caveability and strain-energy buildup are identified and investigated. A methodology for the evaluation of strain-energy accumulation caused by, an overhanging roof is presented. The potential for mine tremors is determined in terms of the local Richter magnitude (ML), which depends on the seismic energy transformed from the stored strain energy that is released when the roof fails. A particle-velocity model is applied to estimate the damage area associated with roof collapse. A case study from a Utah coal mine shows that estimations of bump severity and the damage area agree well with field observations.

The demand for mineral raw materials, especially in the major industrialized nations, has grown rapidly during the past three decades. One consequence of this growth has been an increasing reliance by the large industrialized countries upon nondomestic mineral supplies. These mineral supplies, to a large extent, have been developed by capital from the major industrialized countries. Until recently, most foreign mining ventures were either wholly-owned subsidiaries or joint ventures between two or more mining companies. The recent rise of economic nationalism has substantially changed the business climate and parameters under which foreign investors operate. This paper describes some of the underlying reasons for this change and notes how investors have adapted to the new business conditions.

About 45% of the contaminated sites are dealing with heavy metal problems. Metals are spread in the environment by mining activities, surface treatment and non ferrous processing. As heavy metals can not be degraded, removal or immobilization (leading to bioavailability reduction) are the only risk reducing measures that exist. The currently best available technique for remediation of heavy metal contaminated groundwater is to pump the contaminated water and to treat it in a wastewater treatment plant installed on the surface. Next to this often used, but expensive, pump and treat technologies, heavy metals can be immobilized by inducing sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) to transform the sulfates, that are very often present in the same groundwater (due to the metal mining or processing activities), into sulfides. These sulfides will precipitate the metals as insoluble metal sulfides. At the moment several studies have demonstrated the feasibility of this In Situ Bioprecipitation Process (ISBP) for the removal of heavy metals from ground-water as well at lab scale (batch and column tests) as at field scale. However, some questions arise concerning the continuation of the process, the efficiency and the sustainability of the precipitates. The presented study will try to answer these questions. The study is based on more than 10 different studies, all done by the same authors, on different groundwaters and aquifer samples. The presentation will give an overview of the guidelines necessary for a correct and successful bioprecipitation process with stable metal sulfide precipitates. An important question in the ISBP is related to the sustainability of the heavy metal precipitates. It could be observed that the interruption in the carbon source delivery also stopped the in situ bioprecipitation process. Depending on the metal also some release from the precipitate could be observed. It was shown that release can occur with Co and Ni. Aquifers, on which the metals precipitated during the ISBP, were treated in a sequential extraction process under an-aerobic and aerobic conditions. It could be shown that especially under the anaerobic conditions the Zn and Cd precipitates changed from the leachable and the exchangeable fraction to the organic or Fe-Mn fraction (i.e. from the unstable to the stable fraction). The same could be observed for Co and Ni but still some fraction was present under a more available form. On the other hand it could be shown that large differences were observed concerning the heavy metal speciation on the aquifer in function of the used carbon source during the ISBP. The molasses treated systems showed a much more available heavy metal fraction on the aquifer compared to the lactate or HRC® treated groundwater. The different speciation forms based on the use of different carbon sources will be discussed in detail. It will pay attention to the influence of the carbon source, the efficiency of the induction of the bioprecipitation process, the influence on the competence between sulfate reducers and methanogenic bacteria and the influence of low pH on the ISBP. It seems that acetate, which is also a degradation product of fermentation of some carbon sources, can inhibit some sulfate reducers. Also the relation between slow release compounds and immediately available compounds will be explained. Finally a pilot study will be presented showing the problems that can be encountered during this process. Focus will be put on the induction of the process, the keeping on of the process and the follow up of the process by the installation of in situ mesocosm socks. These results will allow the correct implementation of the ISBP with an eye on longevity and sustainability of the process and present the ISBP as a much more sustainable alternative to the pump and treat technology as measure for heavy metals contaminated groundwaters.

The network of freight tunnels in Chicago consists of about 62 miles of horseshoeshaped tunnels constructed typically less than 50 feet below ground surface. These tunnels serve as repositories of much infrastructure and should remain serviceable. The tunnels are often impacted by adjacent excavations and the question arises as to the existing state of stress in the final liner. This paper discusses construction of these tunnels and presents the results of finite element analyses which were used to obtain ranges for axial forces and bending moments that have developed in the final liner of the freight tunnels since their construction.

The P.W. Gillibrand Company has been processing and stockpiling a suite of heavy minerals at its Soledad Canyon Mine as co-products with construction aggregates since 1984. The heavy minerals are composed of ilmenite, magnetitie, apatite and zircon. The source of the heavy minerals is the Precambrian San Gabriel Anorthosite Complex of the western San Gabriel Mountains. The valuable minerals are readily amenable to standard ore dressing techniques, such as, gravity, magnetic, flotation and electrostatic separation with good recovery and product quality. More than 20,000 short tons of coarse ilmenite were sold in 1990 to the export market for titanium pigment production.
