In underground coal mining many excavated openings have a relatively short projected life span. To ensure safety for men and materials at a minimum cost over the projected operating life, only pillars for overburden support and roof bolts for support of the openings are used extensively. Mining activity constantly changes the geometry of the mine producing load changes on the structural support members of the openings that often induce unstable deformations which can lead to roof falls or pillar failures. The paper describes how simple deformation measurements can be used to design primary and supplementary roof supports and to predict roof falls and possibly pillar bumps. Specifically, bed separations in the roof measured directly with the help of borescopes and calculated from differential convergence data are used to optimize bolt links or support requirements for chemical stabilization of mine roofs. Roof falls are predicted on the basis of admissible values for cumulative convergence between roof and floor, convergence rate, and the change of the rate of convergence. The pillar extraction operations convergence anomalies detected from contouring identify bump prone pillars, while convergence and pillar dilation determine the yield zone in a pillar to verify pillar softening and de-stressing. Structures along the rift were subjected to episodic reactivation. Major north-northeast-trending high-angle normal or reverse faults and northwest-trending trans-current fault systems, may exercise control over ore-forming processes. Gabbro and basalt are the dominant igneous rock types. Carbonatite and kimberlite occur in Nebraska and Kansas. Concentrations of Cu, Ni, Co, Ti, Au, Ag and PG-minerals are known to occur in this setting Arkosic sandstone, siltstone, shale and minor carbonate units occur on top of the rift basalts and in flanking basins where they may reach thicknesses of 10 km. The potential for stratiform or unconformity-related metal liferous deposits must be considered.

"The field demonstration portion of the Underground Grouting and Ground Improvement (UG&GI) short course offered by the Colorado School of Mines was held on May 18, 2016 at Baski Inc.’s Yard in Denver, CO.Numerous full field scale demonstrations of grouting methods and equipment were conducted under various field conditions. As part of these field tests, permeation grouting testing and demonstrations were also conducted. Various cement grout mixes were injected into 1.5-m (60-in.) tall transparent sand columns under controlled conditions (Fig. 1). The objective of the sand column permeation grouting demonstrations in the study was to show students the effects of ordinary Portland cement versus ultrafine cement on the engineering properties of the grout, and the permeation height through various types of soil stratigraphic layers in the sand columns. Similar previous demonstrations have had a specific focus on various brands of Type I-II Portland cements and ultrafine cements with a range of water cement ratios and injection pressures. More detailed information about these previous studies can be found in published proceedings (e.g. Henn et al., 2009 -2011).Equipment and material usedThe five clear plastic sand columns were 191 mm (7.5 in.) inside diameter and 1,524 mm (60 in.) tall. Each sand column had a 19 mm (0.75 in.) diameter hole drilled at the base (bottom) of the blind flange for injection of the grout. A perforated plate and/or screen at the base of the sand columns helped to prevent sand from plugging injection port. A ChemGrout grout plant was used for the demonstration consisting of 0.36 m3 (97 gal) high shear (colloidal) tank mixer, a 0.36 m3 (97 gal) agitator tank and a progressive helical cavity pump with maximum output capacity of 77 L/min (20 gpm) at a maximum discharge pressure of 265 psi (18 bar) (Fig. 2). A simple grout header arrangement consisting of control valves, pressure gauges, flow meter, grout delivery and return line, and a short injection line was also custom built. Also used were infra-red thermometers to measure the temperatures of the grout mix batches, CRD and marsh funnels to measure viscosity, baroid mud balance to measure specific gravity, and a digital scale to measure weights. The grout materials used were Holkim Portand cement (Type I-II), Nippon Steel Sumikin superfine cement and U.S. grout ultrafine cement."

Many of the economic resources of Egypt have been recognized and exploited for thousands of years (e.g. gold and copper). Most of these minerals, particularly those from hard-rock sited deposits, are found in complex form along with other components while those present in sedimentary sequences are largely in simple compounds or as native elements. Recognition of their characteristic settings (structure, basin development, environment of formation etc.) is the main clue in predicting and locating their presence. The main economic minerals exploited in Egypt today come from sedimentary sequences and include sodium and potassium chlorides, gypsum, sulfur, and sedimentary iron ores. Large amounts of low grade sedimentary phosphates are known but are not of economic value at today's prices. Recent intensive investigation in the north-eastern Sinai (EI Arish) and along the southern coasts of the Gulf of Suez has revealed new and extensive sulfur and chloride deposits, and considerable oil and gas are now being exploited from closely related sediments. Tin is the only mineral that is produced from hard-rock sources, and gold and copper deposits are present but not of high enough grade to be economically viable. However, a significant part of Egypt has not yet been studied in enough detail to close the door on future discoveries. Another point of considerable geological interest is the presence of diverse, modern evaporitic settings, from which we may draw the analogs for many of the older gypsum, anhydrite, chloride and sulfur de-posits. In fact these analogs are so well displayed that both the Sinai and Gulf of Suez-Red Sea evaporites (Middle and Upper Miocene) can be readily compared with these modern deposits.

A physical model of flotation, derived from viewing froth as a kinetic species since it constitutes the carrier of ore particles, not only agrees with and is simulated by engineering math models, but is statistically verified by actual laboratory flotation data. The model couples the mechanical removal of froth using paddles with the more rapid chemical interactions taking place in the bath. It clearly shows that the kinetics of mass removal is dictated by flotation cell dimensions, paddle speed, and, more importantly, froth characteristics. Some conclusions and predictions of the model are presented.

Introduction 1300 BC, Egypt. Pharaoh, the god-king, owned all things. He was the only mine operator. As the provider of all things, Pharaoh had great expectations of his officials who gathered the wealth. Pharaoh's official, the mine foreman, was at a gold mine site to see that royal expectations were met. For the official, it could mean a promotion to the good life here and to the godly life hereafter. When he checked the haul for sufficient progress, a lot was at stake. The miner wore a loincloth, perhaps a headband and, if he was a prisoner, ankle manacles. Only an oil lamp helped illuminate the hot, dusty blackness. A fire at the base of the quartz ore face competed for scarce air. The ore so heated crumbled at the prompting of copper wedges. Confined to a crouch, the miner tossed chunks of ore onto a rope-mesh which, when loaded, was drawn up and lugged out. On the surface, the gold was ground to dust. Then it was transported by donkey caravan to the royal depot. There it was weighed, recorded, and distributed to workshops. Many minerals mined Egypt had gold mines to the south in Nubia and to the east in the desert and Sinai. Indeed, gold underwrote Egypt's prosperity. With a constant gold supply, fewer hungry hands robbed burial crypts and tombs. Gold was sacred, "the flesh of the gods." The shiny metal financed the army that policed the desert mining routes and guarded the gold caravans from Bedouin marauders. Gold theft was an offense to the gods. Anyone caught with gold `in his lunchpail,' so to speak, could say goodbye to life, both in this world and the next. In addition to gold, Egypt possessed other mined riches that allowed the Egyptian civilization to flourish. From Sinai and Nubia came copper. So abundant was the red metal that it enabled Egypt to become the supreme power, before the advent of iron. Also mined were amethyst, turquoise, feldspar, jasper, carnelian, and garnet. These were used for the rich inlay work that distinguished Egyptian jewelry and cloisonne. But Egypt's most endurable and awesome material was its stonework - for statues and obelisks and in temples, tombs, and pyramids. Stone quarrying was a vast enterprise. One expedition boasted nearly 10,000 men. These included 5000 laborer soldiers, 130 skilled quarrymen and stonecutters, and - egads! - even 20 scribes. In addition, there were thousands of officials, priests, and officers grooms. There were even fishermen, to provide the multitudes with the catch of the day. Mining methods detailed In 1300 BC, quarrying techniques had changed little since the age of the pyramids some 1300 years before. At that time, in 2600 BC, limestone was locally quarried and fashioned into the blocks of the pyramids. A basic limestone mining method was tunnel quarrying. A ramp was built up to the face of a cliff. A monkey stage was then erected on a ramp. While standing on the stage, quarrymen carved out a rectangular niche in the cliff. The niche was large enough for a quarryman to crawl into. With a wooden mallet, he hammered long copper chisels along the edges of the niche floor to free up the back and sides of the block. The quarryman climbed out of the niche and removed the stage. He then carved out a series of holes in the cliff face for what would be the bottom of the block. The quarryman pounded wooden wedges into the holes. He watered the wedges until they were soaked. The water-logged wedges expanded, splitting the stone along the line of holes. The freed-up block was then levered down from the cliff. On the ground, the blocks were placed on sledges. Men pulled these to nearby water transport. Without block and tackle pulleys, paved roads, and wheels, this was no mean feat. Each block weighed an average of 2.3 t (2.5 st). Whenever possible, the quarrying was done directly from the surface. This paper has been written as one of a group of papers dealing with the subject "Cost Elements in Mining". What are cost elements in mining? The mine operator thinks of direct mining costs in terms of labor, materials, supplies and power, and we might define cost more generally as the price paid to acquire or produce something. Economic theory also has its concepts of cost. From one point of view, that of the consumer, the cost of mineral commodities might be viewed as the total price industry pays for mine output. Similarly, the mining company engaged in the on-going business of finding, developing and operating new mines is concerned very much today with the distribution of all the revenue paid for mine output and not just with its direct or controllable cash costs. In other words, what will the labor force, the supplier of energy, explosives, and reagents, and the supplier of government services, management, capital and the ore reserves receive for their contribution to production.

The year 1988 for the minerals indus¬try was one of favorable worldwide economic conditions for continued, rationally constrained growth. There was continued improvement in relations between market economy nations and the Soviet Union and China. The "shooting war" between Iran and Iraq ended. Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan. And conditions were generally favorable for economic growth in developed market economy countries. These favorable conditions were darkened only somewhat by the continuing foreign debt crises discernible in some major mineral producing developing market economy countries. However, there were situations developing that became major headlines in the late spring - situations that may have pronounced effects in 1989. The most significant event is the muddled situation in China. There is a good chance of worsening international relations and consequent restraint of development projects that could prove beneficial to China and her international partners. Of only slightly lesser evident significance was the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in Iran. This could lead to a variety of paths for the new Iranian leaders. Continued outbreaks of ethnic unrest in the Soviet Union clearly presented problems to the Gorbachev regime. This unrest has raised questions of how far the doctrines of "glasnost" and "peristroika" would be extended, including extensions into the minerals field. Another area of unrest is Panama with its tainted election and the Western Hemisphere's obvious dissatisfaction with the Noreiga regime. While not a direct threat to any major mineral industry enterprise, the political situation certainly presents a potential threat to the Panama Canal. Introduction The endeavours to mechanise the shaft sinking operations have led to the development of shaft boring using a V-Mole. The method implies competent ground and a pilot hole of sufficient verticality. This connects the top and the bottom of the shaft and serves for air ventilation and the transport of mullock. The shaft boring machine - nick name V-Mole - with a general pattern similar to a tunnel-borer reames the pilot hole to the designed diameter of the shaft. (Figure 1) The excavating of the rock, the removal of the mullock from the face and the lining of the shaft wall are done simultaneously. If they can be done also continuously this than creates a high potential of productivity. The verticality of the shaft can be garanteed due to the laser beam guided steering system. The diameter of the shaft is variable in steps of 0.5 m between 6.0 and 10 m in accordance with the need. It decides the capacity of the V-Mole to be applied. The depth of the shaft does not depend on the machine. It is practically unlimited as long as a suitable pilot hole is available. Up to 1988 almost 12.656 m of shaft have been drilled on 40 individual projects in Germany and the U.S.A. using a V-Mole. The rocks penetrated were Carboniferous sediments consisting of Sandstones, Shales, Conglomerates and Coal seams. The average uniaxial compressive strength was in the range of 300 - 700 Mpa with a maximum of 1700 Mpa in some singular sandstones.

Bougainville Copper Limited operates a porphyry copper mine in Papua New Guinea. The waste dumps will contain 400 to 500 million tomes of rock at the end of nine life. The paper describes investigations carried out over a period of en years and highlights the problems associated with waste lump leaching in a tropical and seismic active region. Aspects discussed include mineralogy, chemical reaction, leaching rates, microbiological activity, dump stability, dump structures, effects of tropical conditions, seismic activity and topography.

Efficient separation of naturally hydrophobic gangue, such as talc and carbonaceous materials, from sulphide minerals in flotation is becoming a significant challenge in many processing plants due to the need to process lower grade and more complex ores. Considering the hydrophobic nature of these gangue minerals, prefloating them at the beginning of the flotation circuit in the absence of collectors and rejecting the concentrate is a common practice to remove these gangue minerals. However, sulphide minerals, such as chalcopyrite, can become naturally floatable due to surface oxidation and therefore may float together with naturally hydrophobic gangue. In this study, a new approach was developed to maximize the prefloat of hydrophobic gangue while minimizing the loss of sulphide minerals. The new approach introduced a prefloat cleaner stage where sulphide minerals recovered to the prefloat concentrate was depressed and separated from other hydrophobic gangue minerals at a low pulp potential with the prefloat cleaner tailing fed back to the main sulphide flotation circuit. Flotation tests were conducted using chalcopyrite and organic carbon. The results show that the proposed approach can significantly reduce the loss of valuable minerals in the prefloat flotation without affecting the reject of naturally hydrophobic gangue. Applying pulp potential control at the prefloat cleaner flotation stage also reduces the consumption of reducing agents while minimizing the effect of reducing agents on downstream rougher flotation.

The formation of scale is common in gold ore processing plants. A working definition of scale, applicable to the various scaling conditions found in gold ore processing plants, would be: "a hard, tightly adhering deposit formed in place by the precipitation of calcium-bearing mineral compounds from water". The most common scale found in gold processing plants is calcium carbonate (CaCO3) although calcium sulfate (CaSO4) is occasionally a problem.

In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) and Box-Behnken design to improve copper extraction from refractory copper oxide ore were investigated. Based on single factor tests, quadratic polynomial equation to describe the relationship between influencing factors (particle size, leaching temperature, sulfuric acid concentration, leaching time) and copper leaching rate could be obtained by RSM. The optimum parameters determined by the model are as follows: particle size 64.60% − 74 μm, leaching temperature 74.15 °C, sulfuric acid concentration 0.49 mol/L, and leaching time 140.85 min. Under these conditions, experimental copper leaching rate of 85.12% could be achieved, which was very close to the predicted maximum value (85.34%) by the model, indicating the quadratic polynomial model was accurate and reliable. Copper leaching rate increased approximately by five percentage points comparing to the result of single factor tests. This study indicates that response surface methodology is an effective method to optimize experiment conditions and achieve an ideal experiment result.

This paper reviews the postwar changes that have occurred in the expenditure and financial behavior of mineral corporations, and in particular the relative importance of factors that affect the industry's supply and demand for funds. This quantitative statistical investigation of factors affecting sources and uses of funds of mineral corporations is achieved through the formulation of a simultaneous equation model of sources and uses of funds. After a description of the study sample in Section I, the postwar cyclical and secular financial behavior of mineral corporations is analyzed in detail in Section II. Section III formulates an econometric model of mineral corporate financial behavior which is then estimated and reviewed in Section IV. Section V discusses policy issues regarding depletion allowances, investment tax credits, and industrial organization of the mineral sector. Finally, the optimum financial structure of mining firms is discussed in Section VI, which analyzes the effect of corporate financial structure on the mining corporations' average Cost of capital.

"The two track road sector between Cisneros-Loboguerrero (having a length of 14 km and 11 short unidirectional tunnels) is a new highway still on construction located along the existing Highway Buga – Buenaventura (Colombia). Due to the steep topography, difficult geological/geotechnical conditions, the traditional portal construction approach was impossible to be implemented in eleven (11) of the twenty two (22) portals. In this specific project, the skewed portal approach was developed as the optimal and more effective solution. The construction time and costs of portals were reduced in 21 months and 75%, respectively. At the same time, the natural equilibrium of the slopes was maintained, thus, facilitating adequate safety factors along the useful life of the project. This document pretends to show a detailed design experience (and the construction of the entry portal of tunnel 11 (left)). INTRODUCTION The Cisneros-Loboguerrero project is a 14 km length dual lane highway, connecting productive zones with the Pacific Ocean along the current Bogota-Buenaventura highway as shown in Figure 1. The project is located at the northern side of the Dagua River Valley. The preliminary design suggested constructing portals under challenging topographical conditions, i.e., slope cuts having heights between 50 to 100 m (some having slopes > 100%) requiring complex developments and having very high risks.The entry portal of tunnel 11 (left) was the first portal successfully built by implementing the skewed portal approach. Later, this approach was used as a model for the construction of the other ten (10) portal having similar topographic and geotechnical conditions. The development of this new alternative provided a considerable reduction on the construction time of portals, thus relieving a critical path in this project."

The disposal of residual material from processing and combustion of coal, from incineration of domestic refuse and sewage sludges kind to the environment is a prior task for the future. Deutsche Montan Technologie (DMT) has developed a new technique which makes possible to fill-up goaf cavities behind running caving systems in coalmining. In a mixing and pumping station on the surface high concentrated suspensions are produced from the above mentioned materials. The paste is pumped through pipes to the coalfaces and via trailing discharge pipes stretched to the fracture zone in the caved-in goaf. Since three years a special designed plant is working successfully on a coal mine of Ruhrkohie AG.

The Central City district is one of several adjacent mining areas in the Front Range, Colorado, that contain precious metal-bearing sulfide veins of Laramide (Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary) age. The districts are in the Front Range segment of the Colorado mineral belt, and are characterized by porphyritic igneous rocks of intermediate composition that have intruded Precambrian crystalline rocks in the core of the Front Range. The veins and minor stockworks that constitute the ore deposits in the district were formed largely as fracture fillings. The veins range from simple fissures to complex, branching lodes, and commonly range from less than 0.5 to about 1 m in width. The principal values are in gold and silver. The common metallic minerals are pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, tennantite, and galena; minor minerals are enargite, pitchblende, and gold tellurides. Quartz, cryptocrystalline silica, carbonates, fluorite, and barite compose the gangue. The ore deposits have a well-defined concentric zonal arrangement. A core of pyrite veins (central zone) is surrounded by a peripheral zone of galena-sphalerite vein with gold and silver. An intermediate zone contains transitional veins that have minerals characteristic of both the central and peripheral zones. The minerals were deposited in three stages during a single period of mineralization: uranium; pyrite; base metals, gold and silver. The wall rocks were altered primarily during pyrite-stage mineralization. Sericite envelopes developed adjacent to fractures, and were succeeded outward by zones of argillized rock. The valuable ore minerals were deposited in ore shoots localized by several types of structural controls, principally vein intersections, the physical nature and structure of the wall rocks, and irregularities along the fractures themselves. During supergene alteration, gold was concentrated in the upper, oxidized parts of the veins, commonly to depths of 50 m. The precious metal-bearing sulfide ore deposits are closely associated in space and time with the Laramide porphyritic igneous rocks and are believed to have been derived from hydrothermal fluids related to the magmatic activity. The ore deposits have mesothermal aspects and apparently formed in the temperature range 200°-320°C.

Abstract. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, as part of its effort to maintain an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs, is conducting research on the pneumatic recovery of coarse mica. A system of crushers, screens, and zigzag air classifiers is used to concentrate coarse liberated mica particles from mica ore and from the waste tailings of abandoned mica operations. The plus 0.21-millimeter-size mica is effectively recovered by this method. The mica concentrates produced contain over 90 percent mica. The method recovered up to 78 percent of the mica in the samples. As a dry concentration method, the pneumatic-beneficiation technique may be advantageous in areas of limited water resource.

The production of strontium (Sr) metal from its oxide via an aluminothermic process under 1–5 mbar pressure was examined in this study. SrO of 99%purity by weight was used in the experiments. The effects of stoichiometry and the duration of the process on the efficiency ratio of the metallic strontium were examined. The effects of functional additives (BaO, CaO, CaC2) were also examined. Characterization was carried out using X-ray diffraction spectrometry (XRD), atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and flame photometry techniques. The highest Sr efficiency ratio obtained was 96.89% in the experiment conducted at 1250 °C with 300% Al stoichiometry and 300% BaO stoichiometry.
