Dewatering aids are chemicals which enhance the efficiency of mechanical dewatering equipment such as vacuum disc filters and centrifugal dryers. A new dewatering aid has been developed which significantly lowers the moisture content of the mineral concentrate and causes none of the undesirable side effects normally associated with dewatering aids. Highlights of product development from laboratory screening through field testing will be discussed.

Mine ventilation surveys were conducted by Technical Support engineers during June 1987 and September 1989 at the Dutch Creek Hine. The mine is located near Redstone, Colorado and is operated by Mid-Continent Resources, Inc. Following completion of the initial survey, several recommended improvements were incorporated into the ventilation system by mine personnel. The second survey permitted documentation of the effects of those changes on the ventilation system performance. This paper describes the processes involved in the implementation of the recommended changes. The substantial improvements in system efficiency and reduced operating costs are also described.

To facilitate the installation of the longwall equipment for each extraction panel, West Elk mine develops set-up room roadways that are between 26.5 and 30.5 feet wide. Historically at the mine, the set-up room roadways have been driven in a single 20-foot-wide pass, then incrementally widened to the required width during installation of the longwall shields. The first pass roof is supported with a generic roof support plan consisting of partially encapsulated roof bolts and point-anchored cables. This ground support plan was utilized regardless of the geotechnical conditions encountered in the roadways or consideration of the required stand-up time of the roadway before the longwall shields were installed. This "blanket" approach tends to result in over-conservative or inappropriate roof support designs, particularly in changing geotechnical environments. Guided by the desire to optimize the ground support plans and increase mining efficiency for future set-up rooms, the West Elk mine and Agapito Associates, Inc. have developed and implemented a strata management program. Strata management, as a formal and structured process, allows ground support and mining methods to be tailored to the anticipated and encountered geotechnical environment in a con- trolled manner (Thomas 2007). To arrive at adequate site-specific ground support plans for the set-up rooms at the mine, several struc- tured processes were utilized. Firstly, the geotechnical environment was characterized by examining the roof lithology and geomechanical properties from nearby rock core obtained from exploration boreholes. To increase both mining efficiency and continuity, and to achieve longer stand-up times before the longwall shields are installed, a multi-pass approach was implemented into the design. During mining, the geotechnical conditions of the roadway are mapped, and the roof is strategically surveyed with a borescope. This process was used to ensure that the encountered ground behavior was in alignment with the design standards used for the roof support design. To support this process with measured data, roof extensometers were strategically installed throughout the roadway. This data was used to monitor the magnitude of roof displacement at various horizons and record displacement rates up until the longwall shields were installed. Lastly, a Trigger Action Response Plan (TARP) was used during mining to cater for any unforeseen changes in ground conditions that would warrant additional con- trols such as increased monitoring or the installation of additional ground support. This paper presents two case histories at the mine where the above strata management approach was implemented to arrive at a site-specific ground support plan. The main changes to the mine's ground control plan included a multi-pass mining approach, the utilization of fully encapsulated roof bolts, and the transition to a stiffer roof support system. The geotechnical mapping, the roof borescope results, and the roof extensometer data will be presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the ground support system up until the longwall shields were installed in both presented cases.

Kaiser Steel Corporation, the pioneer steelmaker on the Pacific Coast, was founded by the late Henry J. Kaiser. In 1944 the Company purchased from the Southern Pacific Railroad an iron ore property 200 miles east of Los Angeles known as Eagle Mountain. Today the domestic operation of Kaiser Steel Corporation consists of the iron mine at Eagle Mountain; two coal mines, one each in Utah and New Mexico; an integrated steelmaking complex at Fontana, California; and several steel fabrication and erection facilities along the west coast. Kaiser Steel also has interest in Hamersley Iron, Ltd., Australia, and Kaiser Resources, Ltd., British Columbia. Eagle Mountain Mine is located about 80 miles east of Palm Springs and adjacent to the southeast corner of Joshua Tree National Monument. The area is one of the most arid in the world averaging only two inches of rain annually. Geologically, the mine is at the western edge of the Basin and Range Province which covers about one-half million square miles of the western United States. The Province is typified by north to northwesterly trending fault block mountain ranges separated by sediment filled valleys, Production has totaled over 82 million tons of finished products since the first shipment in June, 1947. Over 500 million tons of material have been mined from the deposit to date. Eagle Mountain Mine is noted for the pioneering use of the largest and most up to date equipment to mine and process its ore. In 1961 Eagle Mountain received the first fleet of 100-ton haulage trucks in the mining industry. There were thirteen semi-trailer units in the fleet. The first 12 to 17-yard size shovel in the mining industry was placed in operation at Eagle Mountain during 1962. Rotary drilling was introduced at Eagle Mountain in 1954 to replace churn drilling. Eagle Mountain was the first major mine to use metallized slurry when three aluminum slurries were introduced for primary blasting in 1962.

Boreholes are used for many purposes in mining operations, petroleum engineering, and construction works. Numerous factors affect the performance of drilling equipment. Researchers continue to work on the variable drilling parameters that can be adjusted in order to reach more efficient drilling operations. Penetration rate is an essential indicator in drillability analysis and estimating. This parameter is of great importance in mining projects. There are almost no models that can estimate the penetration rate for core drilling operations. Under the abovementioned circumstances, this paper focuses on developing models that allow estimating the penetration rate based on rock material properties. During the conduct of this study, drilling experiments under 11 different pressure forces were performed on 8 different rock units, and the equations which estimated the penetration rate depending on the physico-mechanical properties of the rock samples were derived. Experiments were carried out under different pressure forces to investigate the effect of the pressure force on the derived estimation models. The obtained results allowed deriving equations that ensured estimating the penetration rate based on the physico-mechanical properties of the rocks and the applied pressure force. Using these equations, the penetration rate in core drilling operations can be estimated.

A commercially available portable X-ray spectrograph, lightweight and of rugged construction for vehicle or field camp use, was used for the determination of Ba, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Rb, Sr, and Zn in stream sediment geo- chemical samples. Investigations showed a relative standard deviation of 1-3 percent, detection limits of approximately 100 ppm; and significant matrix effects. Coefficients of correlation greater than 0.9 were obtained between portable X-ray and emission and atomic- absorption spectroscopy analyses. A geochemical map of a known mineralized area showed good agreement with maps prepared by other methods of analysis and sample media.

Unfavourable climatic conditions in stopes are of significant economic and social importance due to the following reasons: - Working effect is much lower leading to decreased output and work productivity disregarding implementation of mechanization. - Manpower operating capability decreases much faster under unsatisfactory climatic conditions. Under normal climatic conditions a workman would expend much less effort in line with a shorter effective time for the achievement of identical production effects since the work would be more efficacious. The objective of study of problems and climatic conditions is to make the working environment in mines suitable for normal development of operations. Lowering of mining works to increasing depths and winning of a growing number of small orebodies over a broad area makes the problem of creating suitable climatic circumstances more complex. Mining costs are growing due to bench conditions in line with decreasing metal content in the ore, so frequently the investments required for creating favourable climatic conditions represent, in addition to the selection of mining technology, a very important parameter when making decisions regarding exploitation. As known, the basic factors affecting climatic operating conditions in mines-are: temperature, humidity and speed of air flow, implying that the climatic operating conditions are closely related to mine ventilation. Usually, the concept of unfavourable climatic operating conditions includes increased mine air temperature and humidity and low air flow velocity so that heat exchange between human organism and the working environment is impeded or reduced to minimum. Metal mines in Yugoslavia are characterized by the existence of a large number of active faces - stopes and horizons and lowering of mining operations to increasing depths, so that face ventilation solutions are more and more complex. Since its foundation (1961), our Institute is engaged in investigation of factors influencing climatic circumstances improvement of calculations for air distribution and distribution control in complex ventilation networks and study of problems related to ventilation of large volume and irregular configuration faces, as well as application of gained knowledge in our mines. The paper presents the knowledge and experience gained in the case of Lead and Zinc Mine "Trepca" - Stari Trg.

The normal practice for processing complex sulphide ore has been to grind with steel balls and/or rods in steel mills before flotation. Little thought had been given to the effect of grinding media on flotation selectivity of copper-lead -zinc ore until 1960 when Rey and Formanek(1) published their experiments on sphalerite floatability after grinding in a porcelain mill with ceramic pebbles. The studies by Rey and Formanek had a pronounced effect on the milling of copper-lead-zinc ores in Canada and possibly throughout the world at a time when autogenous grinding was creating a great deal of interest. The impression was created, and possibly still exists with some mill men, that grinding an ore in the absence of steel will result in a loss of selectivity between copper, lead and zinc minerals. This is in spite of the fact Rey and Formanek's experiments showed that the "naturall floatability" of sphalerite was not apparent after grinding in a porcelain pebble mill in an alkaline pulp.

The current study investigates sericite clay as an alternative source of potash and alumina. The alumina and potash content in the sericite is approximately 35 and 10%, respectively, compared with 50–55% in bauxite ore. Muscovite and illite phases are stable, and direct leaching is found to be ineffective. Here, planetary ball milling was performed, which provided dissociation of stable phases to relatively reactive phases. The milling led to a five-fold increase in the surface area, resulting in enhanced leaching kinetics even at low acid concentration. The statistical design obtained optimal conditions of 8 h of milling followed by leaching in 1.73 M HCl at 75 °C, yielding 82% alumina extraction in precipitate with 85% purity in γ-alumina form and 63% potassium dissolution in sylvinite phase. The yield of the precipitate was ~65–68%, and the acid leach residue contained primarily silica.

"In 2016, the estimated value of total nonfuel mineral production in the United States was $74.6 billion, a slight increase from the revised total of $73.4 billion in 2015 (Table 1). Increased construction activity spurred increased production of industrial minerals, especially those used in infrastructure and residential construction. Although starting the year relatively low, prices for several metals, especially for some of the precious metals, began to trend upward. Decreased production of most metals produced in the United States, however, contributed to an overall decline in the value of metal production.Several U.S. metal mines and processing facilities were idled or closed permanently in 2016, including iron ore mines in Michigan and Minnesota; three primary aluminum smelters in Indiana, Missouri and Washington; one secondary zinc smelter in North Carolina; a titanium sponge facility in Utah and titanium mineral operations in Virginia. In addition, in May, the weekly average rig count for oil and gas drilling reached its lowest level since the 1940s when that measurement was first recorded. The reduced drilling activity resulted in decreased production of some industrial mineral products used in the drilling sector. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy declined or held steady, except in the manufacturing of nonmetallic mineral products and nonferrous metals excluding aluminum, which increased. Overall, mining trended downward as the result of significant declines in coal mining, oil and gas extraction and metal mining (Table 2). Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. "Stainless steel castings are used in abundance in the mineral processing industry. In rotary kiln-based processes, these castings are typically exposed to high loads, corrosive elements, mechanical abrasion and cyclical temperature exposure. In the processing of iron ore pellets, it is typical to use a traveling grate preheater or a straight grate furnace to heat the pellets. Both machines have a conveyor that is mainly comprised of high temperature stainless steel castings. It is these castings which are the focus of this study. The expected life of these castings can be quite short, their cost quite high and the effort to replace them very labor intensive. The goal of this study was to gain a better understanding of the failure modes of these castings. With that basic understanding, modifications to the alloy content could be made to achieve a new operational paradigm. That paradigm could be a cheaper casting, a longer lasting casting or a casting tailored to special operating conditions (for example, highly corrosive gases or sudden temperature shocks). Over the past 4 years, Metso Minerals has sought to achieve a better understanding of the failure modes through modeling, laboratory testing and sampling of used castings from various end-users. In addition, we have tested new alloys in a laboratory setting and also in the field to see how they would perform compared to the existing ""standard casting"". Our testing has revealed interesting data concerning the impact toughness, sigma phase content and formation, chloride attack and other performance attributes of various grades of stainless steel when exposed to cyclical temperatures. Interesting results were also obtained concerning the addition of rare earth elements (Niobium, Boron, etc), nitrogen and manganese to a typical ASTM A297 grade of stainless steel. To date, a few hundred test castings have been installed in iron ore pellet plants worldwide. Many of these test castings have already experienced a year or more of operation with good results.INTRODUCTION Cast stainless steels (ASTM A297 and similar) are a main constituent used in the construction of iron ore pelletizing equipment. A typical straight grate pelletizing machine would contain upwards of 160,000lbs of ASTM A297 Grade HH castings. With a typical casting lasting only two to four years, and a casting costing around $35USD, it is easy to see that the castings are a main contributor to the overall cost of producing the pellets. Grade HH and HI (see chemical composition listed below) became the “go to” materials in the 1960’s and very few changes have been made to this day (the exception being plants that switched to flux pellet production in the 1980’s)."

This case study evaluates the long- term physical stability of various historical mining structures remediated by the Center for Mining Environmental Research and Studies (CIEMAN) in Hualgayoc, Cajamarca, Peru. The region has a long history of mining activity, with remnants dating back to pre-Inca times. CIEMAN has assumed responsibility for remediating 286 environmental liabilities in the area, including adits, shafts, pits, tailings, and waste rock dumps. The study analyzes the methods employed to stabilize these structures, including geotechnical engineering techniques and revegetation. Long-term monitoring results are presented, assessing the effectiveness of remediation measures and predicting the future stability of the structures. This study highlights the importance of responsible remediation of mining environmental liabilities to ensure the safety and sustainability of communities and ecosystems affected by historical mining.

In 1984 a high temperature heat recuperation system was installed in the pellet plant of the National Steel Pellet Company located in Keewatin, Minnesota. The system is similar to those of Cleveland Cliffs Empire and U.S. Steel's Minntac operations. It recovers hot process air from the cooler by induced flow, and directs it to an intermediate zone between the drying and preheat zones on the grate machine. This system recently underwent further modifications in April 1985, following initial operation in 1984. The M. A. Hanna Company, which manages the property, developed the design criteria and made the subsequent recommendations for modification through its research facility in Nashwauk, Minnesota.

"In 2017, the total estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States increased by 6 percent from 2016 (Table 1). The value of metals produced domestically increased by 12 percent and the value of industrial minerals produced domestically increased by 3 percent. Some metal commodity values (cobalt, magnesium metal and palladium) increased by more than 35 percent in 2017 from 2016 owing to higher prices.Some U.S. metal mines and processing facilities remained idle in 2017, including three primary aluminum smelters in Indiana, Missouri and Washington; a titanium sponge facility in Utah and a byproduct vanadium production facility in Utah. In contrast, new gold mines opened in late 2016 and 2017 in Nevada and South Carolina, respectively, and iron ore mines in Michigan and Minnesota restarted or operated for the full year. In addition, increased oil and natural gas drilling activity led to increased production of some industrial mineral commodities that are used for oil and gas drilling. Production of some industrial minerals, especially those used in infrastructure and residential construction, remained essentially unchanged in 2017, a reflection of the limited growth in construction activity. The production of some metals, including iron and steel, aluminum and other nonferrous metals and nonmetallic mineral products increased. Overall, mining activity trended upward as the result of increases in coal mining, oil and gas extraction and metal mining (Table 2).Discussion of mine production is commonly segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. The Deserado Mine and transportation system is the fuel supply portion of the Bonanza Power Plant project. Deserado Mine con¬sists of an underground mine with a capacity of 1,224,700 tonnes (1,350,000 tons) of clean coal per year, a 649 tonne (715 tons) per hour closed water circuit jig type preparation plant, a 5.6-kilometer (3 ½ -mile) overland conveyor with covered slot storage, a unit train rail load-out and 59.5 kilometers (37 miles) of totally independ¬ent, captive electrified railroad. Planning and exploration started in March of 1978. Construction of all facilities was completed in April of 1984, approximately six years after initial planning was commenced. This paper will discuss exploration, environmental permitting, mine planning, engineering and construction of the Deserado Mine project.

In early 1988, Chino Mines Co. began using a system of economic splits for all materials encountered in mining. All mined material is evaluated as mill ore, solvent extraction electrowinning plant feed, and non-ore material, to determine its disposition. Results thus far indicate a significant increase in financial returns on material mined compared with the copper cutoff grade previously in use. Chino Mines is a partnership between Phelps Dodge Corp. (two-thirds ownership) and Mitsubishi Corp. (one-third ownership). The company produces copper and byproduct metals from the historic Santa Rita del Cobre mining district in southwestern New Mexico. The history of copper production in the district began with the use of surface native copper by native Americans before 1800. Spanish soldiers from Mexico later became aware of this district and mining began in 1801. The district was worked intermittently until 1909 when the Chino Copper Co. was formed, with Daniel C. Jackling as vice president and managing director. Concentrator operations were started in 1911. Kennecott purchased the company in 1933 and built a smelter in 1939. Chino Mines Co. was formed in 1980 when Mitsubishi purchased one-third of Kennecott's holding at the property.

Mining activity in South America is a growing enterprise. One of difficulties found in many areas of the South American continent, especially in north Chile and south Peru, is the shortage of water supply. In order to overcome this difficulty some mining companies proposed to transport the water from Pacific Ocean up to the mountains. This can be accomplished by the use of stainless steel pipelines, but this is a cost prohibitive solution and is also subject to severe pitting corrosion in a saline environment. The use of mild steel may be a lower cost solution than stainless steel as the material of construction for pipelines but it is subject to corrosion anyway. The corrosion in this case can be internal or external corrosion although cathodic protection as well preventive maintenance usually is enough to mitigate external corrosion without the need to shut down the pipeline. The same is not true about the prevention of internal corrosion. It is not practical, sometimes not even possible, shutdown a pipeline to carry out an inspection and fix sections where potential failures are detected. It is possible avoid corrosion caused by sea water within the mild steel pipelines by applying a proper chemical program designed to virtually eliminate dissolved oxygen in the water commonly called deaeration.1 This type of treatment obviously involves additional capital investment since it requires the construction of one deaerator with the first pumping station and additional equipment at each point where the water can come into contact with oxygen. Deaerators will increase operational costs and subsequent injection of chemicals will be required in the case of multiple degasification facilities thus increasing the consumption of chemicals. grams based on oxygen scavengers, the objective of the present study is to develop a new water treatment capable of preventing mild steel corrosion in aerated sea water. The new treatment must be able to prevent both generalized and localized (pitting) corrosion and overcome the necessity to construct and operate deaerators.

The primary limiting factor for hoisting capacity from great depths is the self-weight of steel wire ropes. Steel wire ropes are very suitable for mine hoisting due to their high strength and durability, but have the negative characteristic of a low strength/weight ratio. Also, as hoisting depths increase, the service life of steel wire ropes decreases due to the higher stresses and physical effects on the ropes. The significantly higher strength/weight ratio of synthetic ropes offers the primary advantage of hoisting a larger payload with a similar size rope and hoisting plant. The beneficial properties of synthetic ropes could be used to improve the overall economics of deep underground mining both for new deep shaft projects and for existing mining operations expanding to deeper orebodies. A research and development program has been initiated to evaluate the suitability of a fully synthetic rope for the mine hoisting application.
