During the past three years, coal samples covering a range of coal rank, ash content, size consist, grindability, and moisture content have been tested for their flow properties using a triaxial shear tester that measures the unconfined yield strength in a compressed sample of coal. The ratio of this unconfined yield strength to the sample bulk density is part of the equation used by handling system manufacturers to calculate the critical arching or critical ratholing diameter needed to ensure that coal will flow from bunkers or bins. This ratio also serves as an index to compare the flow tested. To test the applicability of the index to predicting problems with coal flow, a series of tests were conducted at CO Inc.'s Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) in Homer City, Pennsylvania. Tests covering ranges in size consist, moisture content, and ash content were conducted by first filling a small two-ton bin with coal and then emptying the bin at a pre-set discharge rate. The actual discharge rate from the bin under the various conditions tested was measured. Samples of the coal discharging from the bin were collected. One sample was analyzed for ash, moisture, and size consist; another sample was sent to the Iowa state University for trivial shear tests (supplying an index measurement). Actual flowability results from the bin were then compared to the measured index to determine the applicability of the handleability index in actually predicting coal flow problems. This paper describes the correlation between handleability index and bin flow and explains the next stages of the project.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique can be an attractive approach to evaluate the performance of face ventilation systems. To present the capability of the CFD for such a study and for design purposes, a series of simulations using CFD have been performed at the Department of Mining Engineering, University of Kentucky, for different face ventilation arrangements (e.g. different scrubber geometries, brattice (curtain) and continuous miners locations, airflow quantities, etc.). Results from these simulations are displayed as three dimensional graphs and discussed. Needs for the field validation of these results and refinements of design methodologies are also discussed.

Subsurface strata movements and deformations associated with longwall mining operations in underground coal mines could cause various disturbances to subsurface mine structures, ground water bodies, and coalbed methane reservoirs. In order to assess those disturbances correctly and to design effective and efficient mitigation measures, it is necessary to develop an accurate prediction model for subsurface strata movements and deformations. Decades of research have demonstrated that variations of stratification and lithology in the overburden have significant influence on the subsurface strata movements and deformations during ground subsidence process. The key strata theory states that the thick and hard key strata serve as the backbone of the overburden and control the movements of the thin and soft weak strata located above them. From an engineering standpoint, the overburden strata are subdivided into several individual groups by the key strata with each group consisting of a key layer at the bottom and weak layers overlying it. A new subsurface subsidence prediction model considering the key strata effects on subsurface strata movements and deformations has been proposed. In this method, elastic modulus, specific weight, tensile strength, and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of each layer are used to identify the key layers and to determine the needed subsurface subsidence parameters. The influence function method, proven to be accurate and versatile for surface subsidence prediction, was employed to predict the subsidence on each of the overburden layers from mining horizon progressively upward to ground surface with the assumption that the predicted subsidence on a given layer serves as the subsidence source for the layer immediately above. The enhanced subsurface subsidence prediction model has been demonstrated with an actual case to show its applicability and improvement.

The South African deep-level mining industry is characterised by high operating costs and narrowing profit margins. Compressed air is commonly the largest consumer of energy in these mines, and any inefficiencies reduce profitability. Various methods aiming to optimise the compressed air networks have been implemented without an ideal economic dispatch strategy due to the lack of compressed air storage. In this study, a genetic algorithm was developed to evaluate the financial benefit of converting underground haulage to act as an air receiver (compressed air storage). By converting inactive haulage of 1.17 km in length into a volumetric air receiver, an annual monetary benefit of R2.5 million ($163 200) can be achieved, with a payback period of fewer than eight months. However, implementing the ideal size air receiver would result in an annual monetary benefit of R7.67 million ($500 700).

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 had far reaching effects upon many aspects of mining, ventilation being no exception. In this paper, good ventilation procedures are briefly reviewed, and attention is focused on the changes brought about by the new Act. By way of illustration the ventilation system for a typical Pittsburgh Block system is developed and the requirements of the fan determined. This is then solved by an available computer program, and the application is evaluated. Figure 1 represents a projected system for a coal property 1 by 3 miles in plan at a depth of 1000 feet with a coal thickness of 6 feet and desired daily tonnage of approximately 7200 tons on a two-shift basis. Only one half of the mine is shown (north area) with a mirror image mining arrangement to be developed concurrently for the south area. Six working units are projected, three in each area, one on pillar extraction, another developing panel entries and a third on main entry development. A two-split system is used for each working section so that the continuous miner and bolting crews each have a separate split of air, and no equipment need pass through a line brattice. The old requirement of 6000 cfm at the last open crosscut has been increased to 9000 cfm, and for the first time a minimum quantity (3000 cfm) is stipulated at the face thus requiring either line brattice or an auxiliary fan. With the respirable dust requirement limited to 3 mg/m3, the use of a blower system is precluded and exhaust systems are virtually the only choice. Maintaining the line brattice within 10 feet of the working face at all times as required by the new law has a definite effect on the mining cycle and is most difficult at best. In the highly gaseous Pittsburgh seam located in south-western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia quantities of 20,000 cfm per split are not uncommon to maintain the methane percentage below the required l%

Poland lies at the junction of three geologic provinces: the East European Precambrian platform, the Middle European Paleozoic platform, and the Alpine orogenic belt comprising the Carpathian Mountains. However most of the rocks that contain mineral deposits and many of the recently explored and mined deposits are commonly hidden under thick overburden, sometimes up to over 500 m thick. The discovery of these mineral deposits was due to the combination of geologists talents for inference and the keen interpretation of geophysical data ultimately tested by drilling. Examples of such use of the state-of-the-art geology include the following: 1. Sedimentologic and paleogeographic reconstructions led to the discovery of 8.8 Gt of bituminous coal under 500 m of Jurassic and Cretaceous cover in the Lublin basin, 2. Tectonic and paleogeografic data suggested a potential for discovery of burried Upper Permian copper de-posits on the Foresudetic monocline; subsequent exploration discovered 75 Mt of copper and 0,17 Mt of silver, 3. Geological interpretation of gravity and magnetic da-ta combined with sedimentologic data and regional subsur-face geology resulted in the location of 1.3 Gt of Fe-Ti-V ore in the Precambrian basement of northeastern Poland under -500 m of cover 4. A combination of metallogenic theory and geological interpretation of regional geophysical mapping led to the discovery of Caledonian-Hercynian granites and grano-diorites with accompanying porphyry-type Mo-W-Cu ores below 300 m cover on the northeastern border of the Upper Silesian coal basin 5. Tectonic reconstructions based on gravity and seismic data combined with theory on the origin of native sulfur led to the discovery of 1.0 Gt of native sulfur under cover up to 300 m thick. Five deposits were found at the northern margin of the Carpathian Foredeep. The other deposits found include lignite, polyhalite, lead-zinc ores.

Beam theory is a proxy for the behavior of intact, deforming roof strata above underground openings. Strong, stiff, intact strata have the ability to store significant strain energy when underground openings have large spans, as is typical of longwall operations. When strata fail, they may release some or all of this strain energy. Released energy is partitioned between fracture, thermal, and seismic energy. The tensile failure surface in simply supported beams is predicted to be free of shear stress. This prediction and the kinematic inability of crack slip during fracture make significant dissipation of energy by friction unlikely. In this study, the failure energy partitioning of Nugget Sandstone specimens is examined. Tensile fractures in specimens were induced using three-point loading tests. Elastic waves emanating from fracture events were recorded using an array of accelerometers. Accelerometers were placed within two crack lengths of the fracture surface, and the acceleration records are similar to strong motion seismic records. Spectral analysis was performed and used to develop synthetic, well-behaved, acceleration signals. Synthetic velocity signals were used to estimate radiated seismic energy generated by fracture. These estimates of radiated seismic energy demonstrate a potential means to constrain the minimum seismic partition. Fracture testing was performed on additional samples to estimate the fracture toughness of the sandstone. Synthesis of this data demonstrate a potential means to constrain a maximum seismic partition. Bounding the seismic partition for this type of fracture event could aid the detection and evaluation of seismicity emanating from longwall operations. Having better information about the location and magnitude of mining-induced seismicity within longwall overburdens could lead to better understanding of extraction sequencing and rock behavior in general. These energy estimates also support the hypothesis that dissipation of thermal energy by friction is small in bending tensile failure.

During the winter months of late 1985 and early 1986, residents along Dry Fork near Grundy, Virginia (United States) experienced seismic events that they attributed to longwall mining at Island Creek Corporation’s (Island Creek) Virginia Pocahontas Mine No. 3 (VP-3 mine). Island Creek contacted STS D’Appolonia Ltd. (STSDL) on March 7, 1986, to investigate these events. An STSDL representative, Vincent Scovazzo, interviewed residents of Dry Fork on March 10, 1986. It was noted that only people within a residential structure felt the events they described as house shaking, vibrating walls, and ceramics falling from shelves. STSDL representative installed a blast monitor at a residence. Within 2 days, various events were recorded. Some could be attributed to truck and heavy equipment movement. Eight events had no obvious cause but appeared on resident’s written logs as earthquakes caused by mining. STSDL contacted Utah Geophysical, Inc. who had developed a technique to determine the mode of rock failure using the seismic record. Utah Geophysical was engaged to install and monitor a microseismic network, locate the epicenter of the events, and work with STSDL in determining modes of failure. The network was comprised of six geophones located at five stations. Data was recorded for 24 days from May 20 through June 13, 1986. The data was filtered to eliminate events determined to have an origin other than the longwall panels’ overburden and under-burden. The larger events from this filtered data set were selected and analyzed to determine their hypocenter locations, time of occurrence, magnitudes, and failure mode. Processed data was interpreted, tabulated, and plotted by STSDL to provide information relative to the sources of the seismic vibrations and their possible relationship to the mining operation.

This paper presents the application of a simple genetic algorithm (SGA) to a coal slurry grinding process in order to find the optimum set of conditions under which the desired slurry properties can be attained. The operating parameters of the process were; slurry % solids, dispersant dosage, ball size, and mill speed. The optimization algorithm, which is based upon the mechanics of natural genetics, was used to find near-global optimum points specific to responses measured In terms of fineness, specific energy consumption, viscosity coefficient, and viscosity exponent. In order to minimize the viscosity of the slurry and simultaneously achieve a condition of maximum packing density, optimization was carried out by the penalty method using an overall objective function incorporating several responses. Computer results and analysis demonstrate the ability of the genetic algorithm to perform better than a traditional technique such as response surface methodology (RSM) and to rapidly locate "the global optimum".

Most of us are aware of the relationship between the golden-yellow resin spots on Upper Cretaceous Wasatch Plateau coals and fossil tree resins (?amber?). Nevertheless, confusion remains about the exact chemical composition and structure of commercial coal resin preparations as well as their observed heterogeneity. In order to arrive at a more detailed chemical description we need to distinguish between micropetrographic, organic geochemical and process technological definitions of coal resins, which may include substantial quantities of constituents unrelated to fossil tree resins. New information on composition and origin obtained by Curie-point pyrolysis/evaporation in combination with isobutane chemical ionization mass spectrometry, as presented in this paper, points to the presence of four more or less distinct resin components: (1) a sesquiterpenoid polymer; (2) sesqui-and triterpenoid monomers and dimers; (3) a suite of triterpenoid alcohols, ketones and acids; and (4) a series of increasingly aromatized hydrocarbons with naphthalene and picene type skeletons. Moreover, a strong similarity is found between the composition of recent Dammar resin and fossil Wasatch Plateau coal resins. Some of the technological implications of these findings and the consequent need for a more precise chemical definition and nomenclature are discussed.

Introduction The economics of open-pit mining de¬pend heavily on the cost of overburden removal. It is necessary to maintain a pit slope as steep as possible. Steeper slopes lower the volume of overburden to be handled, thus lower the cost of material handling. There is, however, a limit to which the pit slopes in any given situation can be steepened. Steepening beyond this point could jeopardize the pitwall stability, ren¬dering it unsafe. It might even result in curtailment of pit production. Several factors affect the stability of pitwalls. Some are natural, such as topogra¬phy and regional and local geology. Others are man made, such as pit geometry, ground water management, equipment, drilling and blasting, and the type of excavation. Greater control can be exercised in the latter with proper planning and by following a set of procedures based on field experiences. This article deals with one such control¬lable factor - drilling and blasting. The eco¬nomics of steeper pit slopes is discussed, followed by a record of drilling and blasting practices in western Canadian surface mines. Microprocessor-based instrumentation and its application to blasthole drilling is also described. Economics of steeper pit slopes The economics of steeper pit slopes is not a new issue. It should be reinforced, though, that pit slopes must be as steep as possible to ensure maximum recovery of minerals at a minimum stripping ratio. For operating, economic, and safety reasons, different pit slopes are maintained during different phases of pit development. Figure 1 shows a hypothetical ore body, cylindrical shape, with a radius of 225 m (740 ft) and located 30 m (100 ft) beneath the surface. The mining operations are planned at two different slope angles of 25° and 40°. The ultimate pit depth was established on the basis of the criterion of "break even pit." The variation of the stripping ratio at differ¬ent mine levels is shown in Fig. 2. Table I summarizes the eco¬nomics involved for two pit slopes, 25° and 40°. Figure 3 presents the profits during the life of the mine for these two pit slopes. This study shows that steeper slopes for an open pit operation are far more advanta¬geous than flatter slopes. But, what is the optimum slope at any one point in the life of a moving pit? And how can the stable slopes be maintained over the short- and long-term? Canadian blasting practices A survey of blasting practices in western Canadian surface coal mines revealed that, at most mines, hard consolidated overburden is drilled and blasted. Blastholes are drilled with rotary crawler-¬mounted rigs using bits in the 220 to 310 mm-diam (8.5 to 12 in.-diam) range. Typi¬cal hole depths are 12 to 18 m (40 to 60 ft) to accommodate the pit bench heights of 12 to 15 m (40 to 50 ft). For a 12-m (40-ft) high bench, a typical hole will be 14.6 m (48 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling of 2.6 m (8.5 ft). Half of this hole will typically be a powder column and half will be stemmed. For a 15-m (50-ft) bench, a typical hole will be up to 18 m (66 ft) deep including the subgrade drilling. Drilling patterns are usually 9 m (29.5 ft) spacing and 9 m (29.5 ft) burden. "The San Juan Basin, New Mexico contains many heavy mineral beach-placer sandstone deposits of Cretaceous age. Beach-placer sandstone deposits are concentrations of heavy minerals that formed by mechanical concentrations (i.e. settling) of heavy minerals on beaches or in longshore bars in a marginal-marine environment. They have high concentrations of several elements, such as Ti, Zr, rare earth elements (REE), Sc, Y, U, Th, Nb, Ta and Fe. These elements are becoming increasingly more important to industry, because they are used in the manufacture of devices our society uses every day, i.e. cell phones, computers, and alternative energy devices, like solar panels. It is unlikely that any of the beach-placer sandstone deposits in the San Juan Basin will be mined in the near future because of small tonnage, low grades, high iron content, and distance to processing plants and markets. However, as the demand for some of these elements increases because of increased demand and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics. Current studies at the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources are focused on the Apache Mesa (formerly Stinking Lake) deposit near Dulce, New Mexico. INTRODUCTION Beach-placer sandstone deposits are accumulations of heavy, resistant minerals (i.e. high specific gravity) that form on upper regions of beaches or in long-shore bars in a marginal-marine environment. They form by mechanical concentration (i.e. settling) of heavy minerals by the action of waves, currents, and winds (Fig. 1; Bryan et al., 2007). Modern examples are found along the Atlantic Coast, USA (Koch, 1986; Carpenter and Carpenter, 1991), southeastern Australia (Roy, 1999), and Andhra Pradesh, India (Rao et al., 2008), where they are mined for titanium, zircon, and monazite (a Ce-bearing rare earth, REE, mineral). Detrital heavy minerals comprise approximately 50-60% of these sandstones and typically consist of titanite, zircon, magnetite, ilmenite, monazite, apatite, rutile, xenotime, garnet, and allanite, among other minerals. Most of these minerals have a high specific gravity exceeding 4 and are dark colored, giving the sandstones a dark color, resulting in them being called black sandstones. Although beach-placer sandstone deposits are found in strata of all ages; the deposits in the San Juan Basin in New Mexico are restricted to Late Cretaceous rocks belonging to the Gallup, Dalton, Point Lookout, and Pictured Cliffs Sandstones (Fig. 2; Table 1; Chenoweth, 1957; Houston and Murphy, 1970, 1977). The beach-placer sandstones are black, dark gray, to olive-brown, resistant to erosion, and radioactive due to radioactive zircon, monazite, apatite, and thorium minerals. Anomalously high concentrations of Ti, Fe, Nb, Th, U, Zr, Sc, Y, and REE are characteristic of these deposits. Similar Upper Cretaceous heavy mineral, beach-placer sandstone deposits are found throughout Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, and Colorado (Dow and Batty, 1961; Houston and Murphy, 1970, 1977; Zech et al., 1994)."

This paper describes the results of using shear flocculation and flotation known as aggregative flotation technique for the enrichment of coal-derived char produced from mild gasification process. Aggregative flotation is a separation process which involves the use of suitable aggregating liquid under the action of high shear forces to render hydrophobic surface of coal-derived char particles to aggregate in an aqueous slurry. The fine carbonaceous particles are aggregated into larger floes while the impurities remain hydrophilic. In subsequent flotation process, the char aggregates are then separated from mineral matters by aeration in the flotation cell. The floatability of char aggregates and removal of mineral matters from chars are studied in a lab scale flotation column cell. The effect of various operating parameters on the aggregative flotation responses is presented. Emulsification of aggregating liquid using high intensity agitation and ultrasonic energy provides excellent aggregating liquid dispersion and increases selectivity for char aggregation. In subsequent flotation process, it results in significantly increasing the flotation rate of char aggregates. The microscopic examinations of bubble attachment to coal-derived char particles under various aggregating liquid dispersion levels were conducted by induction time measurement. The distributions of hydrophobicity of char particles and char aggregates prepared under various aggregating liquid dispersion techniques were measured by film flotation. The char particles prepared under high intensity emulsification attach at significantly faster rates to air bubble and with lower mean critical wetting surface tension than that of char with direct aggregating liquid addition. An interrelationship of increasing in flotation rate/combustible recovery with decreasing in induction time, mean critical wetting surface tension and dispersion of hydrophobicity on the char particles and char aggregates were obtained.

Leaching titaniferous magnetite concentrate with alkali solution of high concentration under high temperature and high pressure was utilized to improve the grade of iron in iron concentrate and the grade of TiO2 in titanium tailings. The titaniferous magnetite concentrate in use contained 12.67% TiO2 and 54.01% Fe. The thermodynamics of the possible reactions and the kinetics of leaching process were analyzed. It was found that decomposing FeTiO3 with NaOH aqueous solution could be carried out spontaneously and the reaction rate was mainly controlled by internal diffusion. The effects of water usage, alkali concentration, reaction time, and temperature on the leaching procedure were inspected, and the products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. After NaOH leaching and magnetic separation, the concentrate, with Fe purity of 65.98% and Fe recovery of 82.46%, and the tailings, with TiO2 purity of 32.09% and TiO2 recovery of 80.79%, were obtained, respectively.

Joints may be taken into account when using numerical modeling as an aid to mine design by embedding joints in the model. When using the popular finite element method, say UT3PC, a pre-analysis step is necessary, Step 0. This step is for the computation of equivalent properties of a representative elementary volume of jointed rock (REV) in the model. This Step 0 is taken before Steps 1, 2 and 3 for specification of a rock properties file, generation of the mesh, and model analysis are taken. A brief explanation of equivalent properties and several examples aid in explaining the details of Step 0. Focus is on procedures, input files, and output to show ease of computation. Theoretical details are relegated to references (e.g. Pariseau 2022). Comparisons of safety factor distributions about example mine excavations with direct scaling from mine observations then offer some insights concerning equivalent properties, especially strengths.

Progressive improvements in crusher design, screening efficiency, and operating experience along with the downsizing of many taconite operations has resulted in the abilitv of some crushing plants to produce a substantially finer product. This finer product opens the possibility of replacing the rods in the rod mill with balls as is the current practice at Sydvaranger, Norway. If this replacement could be accomplished substantial savings associated with metal wear and the elimination of rod charging may be realized. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of a mill charged with rods with the performance of the same mill charged with balls at the pilot scale. The first objective was to establish whether we could achieve the same throughput rate at the same mesh-of-grind in a mill in which the rod media has been replaced by balls. The second point was to determine whether the ball media would create a significant tramp oversize problem.

This paper describes an experimental method for the monitoring of diesel-generated exhaust gas pollutants in a dead-ended drift for the purpose of assessing the effect of control approaches. Experiments were conducted to determine the relative merits of these ventilation configurations: no auxiliary ventilation, induction ventilation at the entrance to the drift, and ventilation of the dead-ended drift with positive displacement tubing. The drift used in this experimental work was approximately 105 ft. (32.0 mf long and slightly downsloping, with an average height and width of 8 ft. (2.4 m) and 28 ft. (8.5 m1 , respectively. The data were gathered for assessing these ventilation methods and for gathering data to support a computer model of the dispersion and mixing processes. For this drift, it was found that ventilation with positive displacement tubing provided the best removal of diesel-generated pollutants. Induction ventilation appeared to be the least effective of the three methods examined. A comparison was also made between personal monitoring and area monitoring. Results of this analysis showed that in regions of high concentration gradients, it was not possible to get good agreement between point sampling and personal monitoring. In well-mixed areas, good agreement between the two methods of monitoring was obtained.

Coastal States Energy Company (Coastal), a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Coastal Corporation of Houston, Texas, owns coal mining operations in Utah and Kentucky. One of the Utah operations, Southern Utah Fuel Company (SUFCo), located 30 miles west of Salina, Utah, has been operated by Coastal since 1974. This operation is a single-seam, six-section mine operated from one portal area. It produces 2.2 million tons of coal per year and has a payroll of approximately 300 employees, Coal is mined by continuous miners, hauled by diesel-powered haulers and transported by belt conveyor to outside crushing and screening facilities. Sized coal is hauled by contract truckers 80 miles to a unit-train facility located at Levan, Utah.

The sedimentation and dewatering characteristics of flocculated slurries are determined by the size and density of the flocs. Studies of the formation and growth of flocs reveal that floc size is limited by breakage of the agglomerates due to shear in the suspension. Floc density measurements indicate that there is an inverse relationship between size and density. This relationship appears to be determined primarily by the nature of the solid particles, especially the size distribution, but it appears that agitation of the suspension can lead to some densification of the flocs, in addition to breakage. It follows that both size and density can be controlled to a significant extent by regulating the physical conditions (agitation, method of flocculant addition etc.) during flocculation. The use of physical floc conditioning to control the sedimentation and dewatering (filtration) behavior of flocculated, fine-particle suspensions is evaluated in terms of its effects on floc size end density.
