BHP Robinson contracted Minnovex Technologies to implement a Comdale Expert System at their greenfields operation in Ely, Nevada. The expert system has resulted in a significant increase in tonnage. Other benefits have also been realised, including a reduction in operation upsets (having a positive effect on downstream processes, i.e. flotation) and reduced production variances between crews. The expert system is written in a unique manner using trend based logic with minimal hard limits. The result is a robust system that requires minimal operator supervision while producing very high results. The development, success and acceptance of the system can be attributed to the strong team that was assembled for this project. The team not only consisted of BHP Metallurgists and Minnovex but most importantly included operations.

The title of this session is "Wall Street Looks at the Mining Industry," and I am going to attempt to answer the question: Shouldn't Mining Stocks Sell at Higher Price Levels? Or, What Does Wall Street See When Looking at the Mining Industry? Well, it sees a capital intensive business, a technical industry, and a growing industry becoming more vertically integrated. But, at the same time, Wall Street sees a cyclical industry, a fragmented industry of erratic earnings, spotty public relations, a feast-or-famine business where the public usually does not differentiate between coal mining or metal mining, and does not appreciate either the risks or the rewards. As a result, mining stocks generally sell at relatively low price learnings ratios in comparison to other industrial groups. This PIE ratio, the current market price of the capital stock divided by annual earnings per share, is probably the most popular index of a stock's value. The average of the price/ earnings ratios of the 30 stocks comprising the Dow Jones Industrial Average is over 14. This diverse group of stocks is widely regarded as being a cross-section and representative of the industrial companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange. However, in comparison to 14, Asarco and Kennecott shares are currently available for about 8 times annual earnings. Even discounting earnings from South America, the stock of these two companies sells at only 10 times earnings. Of course, Peruvian politics is currently preventing Cerro shares from selling above 6 times earnings, and Chilean politics keeps Anaconda shares at a PIE multiple of 7. However, even in better times, these companies rarely sell above 10 times earnings. American Metal Climax and Newmont sell at only 11 times earnings as does Phelps Dodge and St. Joseph Lead. What is the cummulative rate of recovery of copper from a sulfide leach dump? This is one of the most frequently asked questions today. We, in the industry, ask it of each other when we meet; however, the technical answers may vary from "I don't know" to 'quite good" from people within the same company. Management also poses this question because it plays a vital role in our planning for future production. The answer is difficult because of the many variables between different operations such as physical construction of the dump, topography of the original site, characteristics of dump material, mineralization, water application, etc. Each has a bearing on the rate of recovery. OPERATIONAL DATA Our method of water distribution is unique in that each dump is drilled to allow physical injection of water into the dump. The in¬jection holes are drilled vertically, on 251 centers, from the surface of the dump. Normally, the holes are drilled 40' deep and cased with 4" PVC perforated pipe.. The pipe is perforated at one-foot intervals with four V diameter holes at 901 spacing on the pipe circumference. We formerly alternated shallow holes (20'-40') with deep holes (80'-l80') in an effort to cover the entire dump and hasten oxidation. The shallow hole depth varied according to the compaction thickness. The deep hole depth varied according to the height of the dump and the original ground profile, We prefer to have the deep holes end 20'-30' above the original ground level. This generally allows us to penetrate the coarse material at the bottom of the dump. We had to discontinue the deep holes_ in order to cover more dump area in a shorter period of time to meet increased production requirements.

In order to store high-level radioactive waste underground, the German repository concept considers clay, crystalline and salt formations as suitable host rock materials (National Citizens’ Oversight Committee, 2024). The current research projects of the Chair Underground Mining Methods at TUBAF (Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg) in nuclear waste repositories mainly focus on storage within salt formations. In this scenario, the high-level radioactive waste is supposed to be packed into specifically designed containers and then transported underground and emplaced in horizontal storage drifts. The residual temperature of the radioactive waste leads to the question if there are optimization possibilities for waste handling, the storage and the long-term emplacement of such high temperature level waste. A deeper understanding of the heat transmission from the container into the host rock might lead both towards possibly shorter surface interim storage times as well as size optimization possibilities of the repository itself. TUBAF has conducted research that successfully proved that an optimized container positioning yields more favorable thermal patterns and can be achieved with conventional mining equipment.

Dr. Emrick, honored guests, distinguished speakers, ladies and gentlemen, I am Langan Swent, Vice President for Environmental Affairs and Occupational Safety and Health, of Homestake Mining Company. Today, I appear on behalf of the American Mining Congress, as chairman of its uranium mine health subcommittee. The American Mining Congress is a trade association of several hundred members, which include the producers of a large proportion of the nation's uranium. I've been asked to make a statement of principles for the uranium industry. There are two types of principles that apply to industry in general, and specifically to the uranium industry. Some have external origins and apply regardless of what industry does or thinks. Others are generated by industry itself and serve as goals for the industry. I'll discuss some of each type. I'll limit my statement to those principles related to the subject of this conference--radiation hazards in mining. I won't take your time trying to explain some of the unrelated principles that we must all contend with, such as Parkinson's Laws, Murphy's Law, and the Peter Principle. First and foremost, industry has a sincere interest in the well-being and health of its employees. There are two basic reasons for this. One is a basic respect for human lives, especially those of people we see and work with every day. No one in management wants to carry the lifelong burden of blame for a life lost due to poor working conditions. Most uranium and other mining is done in small communities. Production workers, maintenance workers, service workers, shift bosses, foremen, superintendents and managers all live in the same community. They attend the same churches. They serve together in civic activities. Their children go to the same schools. If one employee in such a community loses his life due to poor working conditions, those remaining know in a daily and intimate way the resulting personal tragedy, usually of a bereaved widow and fatherless children. This sad experience makes the community, including industry management, intensely sensitive to the need for maintaining good working conditions in the mines. But what about the segment of industry that does not live in the mining communities? Corporate and owner's offices are frequently hundreds of miles from the communities where the mining takes place. Many of these people are not personally acquainted with the workers, and there are few close personal ties between the two communities. The distant staff are, however, still human beings and motivated by the same basic human respect for life. Mr. Manuel Gomez of MSHA and a member of the planning committee for this conference summed this point up expressively when he told me: "No one group has a corner on compassion." In addition to compassion, there is another factor. In both communities the basic assignment to everyone is to produce profits. In carrying out this assignment, supervisory and management people are acutely aware of the high cost of illnesses and accidents. Their objective of maximizing profits is advanced significantly by minimizing illnesses and accidents at the mines. A business that has illnesses and accidents generally suffers from poor employee morale and high employee turnover, both of which detract from profits. Next, I would like to talk about what industry has done in the field that is the subject of this conference. We have worked at all sorts of methods to reduce exposure of employees since the exposure standards were first introduced and then lowered. Other speakers will go into details of technology, and I'll simply comment on exposure results. These are best shown in Table 1. The table shows the average WL to which miners in U.S. underground uranium mines have been exposed since 1937 through 1980. The trend of decreasing radon daughter concentrations throughout the period is obvious. Figure 1 presents this data graphically and shows the trend at a glance. This record begins in 1937 when uranium, as such, really wasn't being mined or sought. The concentrations given by the U.S. Public Health Service were for a few small vanadium mines which carried uranium as a by-product. A few years later, when the Manhattan project to develop the atomic bomb was begun, these mines became the first U.S. uranium mines and the vanadium became the by-product! The radiation hazard then also received attention and the average concentrations began to decline. As knowledge of the reality of the hazard spread, conditions improved. The search for uranium in the U.S. turned up new and larger ore bodies that had to be mined by large underground mines. These mines involved ventilation planning from the beginning, and when they came into production in the late 1950's they lowered the average concentrations greatly. Then in 1960 the American Standards Association adopted a standard setting 1 working level as a satisfactory condition, and several action levels up to 10WL, at which point removal of people from exposure was called for. As a result of the uranium producing states governors' conference in December 1960, state mine inspection agencies, in the early 1960's, began to adopt and enforce the ASA standards. As a result, average concentrations again declined. In 1967, the Federal Radiation Council recommended an annual limitation of 12 WLM per individual. The Buick Concentrator represents state-of- the-art technology in automated digital process control operation utilizing a centralized computer. The process control strategies implemented at Buick are no longer new to the industry but the successful application of these developments is still rather unique in North America. Productivity improvements, determined to be a direct result of the process control developments, are the primary topics of this paper. Emphasis is placed on metallurgical benefits including both lead and zinc recoveries, lead concentrate grade and reductions realized in reagent consumptions, operating costs and personnel. The productivity improvement discussion is preceded by a concentrator description and a brief history of the process control development at Buick. Current control strategies and future applications are presented afterward.

The Lone Tree gold mine is located about 4S kilometers east from Winnemucca on the west flank of Lone Tree Hill in Humboldt County, Nevada. The deposit occurs at the north end of the low, rolling Havallah Hills and is about 1 kilometer south of Interstate Highway 80, in sections 11 and 14, Township 34 North, Range 42 East, Mount Diablo Base and Meridian (Fig. 1). The Lone Tree deposit is outside of any previously established mining district and all lands are owned or controlled by Santa Fe Pacific Gold or affiliated companies.

Due to the unbalanced top coal drawing process, the recovery ratio is low, and the equipment stability is poor in the longwall top coal caving mining (LTCC) with an inclined seam. Aimed at these problems, this paper proposes the dynamic group caving method (DGCM). The basic procedure is that when the drawn volume of top coal from a support reaches about half, the next support begins drawing top coal, and the drawing process between the two supports is half done. Taking the panel no. 8103 in Beixinyao mine as the research object, the characteristics of drawing body shape, particle movement trace, and variation of recovery ratio are investigated by using Particle Flow Code. Furthermore, the effect of mining-caving ratio on the top coal drawing law under DGCM is revealed by the simulation results, and compared with the single-opening sequence caving method (SSCM) and the doubleopenings sequence caving method, advantages of DGCM are determined in inclined seams. The results show that the drawing body can be divided into the left and the right under DGCM. Specifically, the drawn top coal particles in the left are from the upper part of this support, that in the right are from the lower part of next support, which verifies the correctness of the theoretical analysis. The characteristics of the drawing body shape are more significant when the mining-caving ratio is relatively small. In addition, with increasing mining-caving ratio, the recovery ratio of the panel both increases gradually underDGCMand SSCM.When the miningcaving ratio is less than 1:1, the recovery ratio of DGCM is obviously higher than that of SSCM, indicating that DGCM can greatly improve the recovery ratio. While when the mining-caving ratio is larger than 1:1, the recovery ratio of two caving methods is basically equal; however, the advancing time is significantly shortened under DGCM. This study are of great significance to realize high efficiency and precise caving in LTCC with an inclined seam.

Copper mine operations consistently generate a large quantity of tailings after their concentration processing. These tailings are either piled up or stored in a dam, where both alternatives of disposal lead to environmental impacts. The dam copper tailings have a huge potential for by-product production thus improving sustainability and profitability in industrial operations. This paper describes a study aiming at producing a magnetite pellet feed as a by-product from a dam chalcopyrite flotation tailings and generating free magnetite non-magnetic rougher tailings. The chemical assay and mineralogy analysis of dam copper flotation tailings indicate low Fe grade (6.34 wt%), high SiO2 grade (63.14 wt%), low magnetite (3.6 wt%), and high iron silicates content (22.72 wt%). The complex mineralogy of these tailings leads to the need of grinding the rougher magnetite pellet feed as fine as 80% of particles smaller than 20 μm ( P80) aiming at improving magnetite liberation. The proposed process route comprises a scalping screen, low field rougher, and cleaner magnetic separations using a drum magnetic separator (80 kA/m or 1000 Gauss), followed by silicates reverse cationic flotation as a recleaner step. With this process route, it was possible to produce a high-quality magnetite pellet feed reaching 68.00 wt% of Fe, 2.13 wt% of SiO2, 0.51 wt% of Al2O3, and 95.1 wt% of magnetite. The Blaine specific surface area was 2300 cm2/ g, being in the range recommended for pelletizing (1900 up to 3000 cm2/ g). The total mass, Fe, SiO2, Al2O3, and magnetite recoveries were 2.77%, 29.71%, 0.09%, 0.12%, and 73.17%, respectively. Most of the magnetite losses, around 20% of total magnetite fed, occurred in the oversize of the scalping screen. Additionally, it generated non-magnetic rougher tailings with less than 1.0 wt% of magnetite that could be used as by-products and reduced the amount of tailings disposal in a dam. This study contributes toward the sustainability of operation, minimizing tailings disposal.

Setting up a plant sampling procedure by simply applying the usual statistical sampling theory was questionable. Two sampling concepts were considered in the sampling study: o a sufficient number of assays can be taken such that the average determined from these individual samples represents a known quantity of ore. o a sufficient weight of sample can be taken such that when assayed it represents a known quantity of ore. The test program included evaluation of sampling techniques, sample preparation and analytical methods. The overall sampling program is depicted in Figure 2.

Enclosed cabs have been used on surface mining equipment for many years to protect equipment operators from health and safety hazards. The surface mining and quarrying process is a highly mechanized process that generates large quantities of respirable dust. Due to economic factors, more older mining equipment is being used today than in years past. With this older equipment, it is common to observe deterioration of many components on the enclosed cabs, which greatly reduce their protection effectiveness. NIOSH has performed a number of different field studies, as well as a comprehensive laboratory study, evaluating various factors and parameters regarding enclosed cabs. NIOSH has recently completed a cooperative research effort to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly designed unidirectional powered precleaner, filter and pressurizer that brings clean filtered air in at the roof of the cab and extracts all recirculated air near the floor. This research effort provided another example of the enhancement in air quality that can be achieved in an enclosed cab from the implementation of an improved filtration system and by establishing positive pressurization from increased intake air volume and sealing the cab. This testing showed a significant reduction in respirable dust levels in the enclosed cab when comparing baseline versus post-testing results. Since dust levels were similar near the roof and floor of the cab during post-testing, the unidirectional flow pattern did not appear to significantly improve the performance over the conventional design in this study.

Pebble phosphate deposits of Florida have been established from south of Hardee County to north of the Georgia state line or a distance of over 200 miles and mining has been carried out in an ever-increasing scale since 1885. Deposits that can be mined on the economical standards of today, however, are confined in a roughly circular area about 30 miles in diameter, generally within Polk and Hillsborough Counties, in the central part of the State. The phosphate deposit, which is in the Bone Valley formation of the Pliocene age, is covered by Pleistocene terrace deposits of unconsolidated quartz sand. The matrix is composed of approximately 1/3 clay slimes, 1/3 silica sand and 1/3 phosphate pebbles. The phosphate occurs usually as rounded pebbles, ranging in size from about 1 inch down to approximately 400 mesh. The phosphate may vary from well- defined hard pebbles to soft weathered rock. The color and character of the phosphate will range from smooth buff pebbles to black and white or "salt and pepper rock." The screen size distribution varies considerably between locations and the recoverable phosphate varies may extend down to the 400 mesh size in some areas, while in others the phosphate may cut off sharply at about 35 mesh.

Dumper operators are frequently exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) in surface mines. Surface mining activities involve the amalgamation of comparatively high intensity of vibration and extended exposure durations. Efficient risk reduction mandates knowing of important phases of a task that poses a threat to health of dumper operators. So far in India very limited studies have been reported on WBV exposure with regard to surface mines. This paper evaluates WBV of dumper operators based on ISO 2631-1:1997 Standards and European Union (EU) Directive 2002 for different phases of job cycle. Six dumpers were considered for this study and the vibration measurements were made for all the four phases of the job cycle by placing the triaxial accelerometer on the operator’s seat-surface and at the seat-back, independently. The findings of the study revealed that the haulage task (loaded travel and empty travel) remains the chief contributor to vibration exposure according to seat-surface and seat-back measurements. Maximum frequency weighted root mean square (RMS) of 1.12 m/s2 and 1.09 m/s2 were reported for empty travel task for seat-surface and seat-back measurements, respectively. For seat-surface measurements based on RMS, Z axis remains as the dominant axis of vibration for all the dumpers during haulage task, whereas for seat-back measurements, the dominant axis varies between X and Y. Exposure action value (EAV) based on RMS has exceeded the threshold value of 0.5 m/s2 for all the dumpers during loaded travel and empty travel for seat-surface as well as for seat-back measurements.

The program of study of pellet binder materials was begun by the ORF in 1963 to examine various Canadian materials as substitutes for bentonite which is imported in large tonnages (199,270 tons in 1969) from the U.S.A. for Canadian pellet plant operations. Most of the raw bentonite used in Canada originates in Wyoming, North Dakota and more recently Greece, resulting in relatively high transportation costs to pellet producers. Some Canadian bentonites available in Western Canada (Alberta) can be beneficiated for uses as pellet binders but could not compete in cost with U.S. sources due to the cost of beneficiation and the higher rail transport charges to Eastern Canada. It is difficult to find a substitute for bentonite, and many materials have been investigated by research groups but, so far, no economic substitute is in use. However, some success is apparent in studies of low cost materials such as clays, sea weed, peat moss and low grade coal, The work done by the ORF over several years has covered systematic test¬ing of Ontario clays, lignite, some types of tree bark, waste sulphite liquors of various kinds, and peat moss as binders for iron ore pellets. The major effort has been concentrated on peat moss and has included a study of the influence of different additives. Since analysis of peat moss for humic acid is difficult and time consuming, a certain amount of time was devoted to development of improved methods, the most useful of which was a spectrophotometric method based on extraction of peat by sodium pyrophosphate for determination of humic substances. In the present paper, only the most recent work concerning the use of peat moss with suitable additives is discussed in detail, since it is the most conclusive and best documented portion of the program.

One of the objectives of today's mine superintendent is to increase his equipment availability. To this end we have seen improved scheduling procedures, preventive maintenance programs and extensive drive training and operating procedures. However, until recently, one area that has changed little in the past twenty years is the method of refueling and servicing mine equipment. In looking at mines across the country continually one encounters the hazardous oil soaked ground, the hand held fuel nozzle and the maze of hoses of the "traditional" fuel stop. By adapting technology developed in the construction and aircraft industry, current fueling and servicing practices can be easily improved. The result will be less nonproductive time, less downtime from engine failures and increased security from major refueling fires. The time saved almost amounts to having another truck in the fleet! One feature of the improved servicing practice is the implementation of high flow fueling. For trucks now on the market, a flow rate between 120 and 150 gam is feasible, about 90 gam greater than current practice. This flow rate could be increased even further as larger trucks come into use. A second idea borrowed from the aircraft industry is the use of positive lock type connection nozzles that automatically shut off when flow stops. These may be used for fuel, water, oil and hydraulic systems to eliminate spillage and assure that clean fuel, oils, and water are delivered to the vehicles. The reduction of fuel spillage lessens the threat of major fires resulting: in equipment damage and loss. Eliminating fire hazards will become even more important as the turbine engine with its lighter, more volatile fuels come into common use.

Dispatching systems have attracted considerable attention in the last years due to substantial gains in productivity achieved through their implementation. These systems will be extensively used in the future by mine operators as a means of optimizing productivity. This paper describes a computer simulation model designed to study the feasibility of continuously dispatching trucks in open-pit mines based on different operating procedures. The system developed is semi-automated and performs an active role by suggesting to the dispatcher the best assignment according to each specific circumstance. It is modeled based on an advance-clock increment to reduce computing time and allows the insertion of heuristic dispatching policies and equipment real-locations when breakdowns occur. Dispatching procedures taking into account long-term production objectives are considered in system development.

The objective of this paper is to describe a study sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy during which a model was developed to optimize haulback mining procedures in single and multiple seam contour mines, The study objective was to achieve financial- based productivity increases approaching twenty percent. This paper reviews the results of the first year's Phase I activities, which include four main tasks: formulate a methodology that can be used to select equipment and mining procedures that result in optimal performance in a particular haulback mining situation; conduct field studies of representative single and multiple seam mines to obtain quantitative background information for development of the formulated methodology: develop the methodology into a useful design tool for mine operators; and prepare plans for field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of the developed tool.

The study explores a novel process to sinter porous iron ore with improved productivity and quality. The iron ore is pre-processed with calcined lime to temporarily close pores, preventing water absorption during granulation. This enhances reaction kinetics and early slag formation during sintering, resulting in significant improvements in sinter productivity, product yield, and cold strength property.

Copper slag is mainly used in cutting tools, abrasives, asphalt pavement, road construction, and in the production of concrete as an alternative to sand and cement [1]. As a renewable resource, only about 15-20 percent of the slag is used for these applications, and the dumping or disposal of surplus unused slag results in waste of a certain amount of usable metal in the feedstock [2]. In this work, the oxidation behavior of copper smelting slag under nonisothermal condition is studied using data obtained by the thermogravimetric (TG) method, and the kinetics parameters and reaction mechanism of oxidation are determined. It provides a theoretical basis for the comprehensive recovery of iron resources in slag and the selection of reasonable slag-making conditions.

The 2,250-MW, coal-fired Navajo Generating Station located in Page, AZ draws water from Lake Powell using submersible pumps installed in five inclined shafts. Drought threatens to lower the reservoir to below the existing intakes. A system of new steel-lined intake shafts located on the same site was required for uninterrupted plant operation. The small size of the site, and the need to keep the existing system in operation, required detailed designs and placed significant limitations on construction equipment and activities. The Navajo Sandstone that forms the near vertical shoreline of the reservoir is 98 percent very fine grained quartz, highly abrasive and contains highly fractured intervals that presented numerous challenges to drilling the new 152-m (500-ft) deep, 109-cm (43-in.) diameter intake shafts inclined 23° to 26° from vertical. Spatial constraints, submersible pump design and operational criteria required that each shaft have a unique inclination and orientation and hit a small breakout target located 76 m (250 ft) under water. Sophisticated drilling equipment and techniques as well as state of the practice downhole survey technology and methods were used to make adjustments and maintain drilling accuracy with less than 1 percent deviation. Environmental requirements mandated water as the drilling fluid and grout was not allowed in to the lake under any circumstances. The shafts were videotaped and the breakout locations were examined using an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to verify shaft locations and rock conditions, and to guide placement of pneumatic packers to ensure grout did not transmit to the lake during the steel liner installation. In anticipation of the invasion of quagga mussels, the shaft design included an allowance for a chemical dosing system and a copper-rich alloy at the exposed portions of the steel liner.
