Introduction The separation of minerals from complex sulfide ores by flotation requires careful control of the surface chemical behaviors of the minerals constituting the ores. When the minerals in the ore are finely disseminated, extremely fine grinding is needed to liberate the minerals. Fine grinding is not only an energy-intensive operation, but also influences the flotation behaviors of liberated minerals. Steel balls are commonly used for grinding. Galvanic interactions occur not only between sulfide minerals and grinding media but also among the different sulfide minerals themselves. The electrochemical characteristics of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite when they are independently coupled with steel grinding media and the relevance of these characteristics to the flotation behavior of these minerals have been exten¬sively studied (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992: Li and Iwasaki, 1992). These studies dealt with reactions in two electrode combinations, simulating mineral-grinding medium and mineral-mineral interactions. In practice, however, it is more common to involve more than one sulfide mineral. In a study of a pyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system, Pozzo et al. (1989) provided evidence that a mineral having an intermediate potential could behave differently, depending on the condi¬tion of galvanic contact. This investigation was undertaken to study a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system to gain better in¬sight into the mechanism of multiple galvanic interactions. A three-electrode system was chosen to simulate a typical copper sulfide ore. The sulfide minerals were represented by chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The grinding medium was rep¬resented by mild steel. The nature of galvanic interactions involving these minerals and grinding medium in an oxygen atmosphere was investigated in a three-electrode combina¬tion, and an attempt was made to relate the laboratory flotation results of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ores. Possible implications to the differential flotation of complex sulfide ores are discussed. Key words: Electrochemistry, Flotation, Sulfide ores Experimental The pyrrhotite (57.74% Fe, 0.09% Cu, 4.84% Ni and 36.54% S) sample was obtained from Falconbridge Ltd.'s Strathcona mine, Ontario, Canada, and the chalcopyrite (26.00% Cu, 28.57% Fe, 0.05% Ni and 31.52% S) sample came from Transvaal, South Africa. Mild steel (AISI 1020, 0.2% C) was chosen to represent grinding media. A conventional three-electrode cell was used in the elec¬trochemical measurements. The working, counter and refer¬ence electrodes were, respectively, sulfide minerals or mild steel, graphite rod and saturated calomel electrode (SCE, 0.245 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). The exposed areas of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium electrodes were approximately the same (0.17 to 0.19 cm2). The preparation methods of working electrodes, the reagents used, the experi¬mental procedures and the instrumentation were the same as those described previously (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992). Rest potentials of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and mild steel were measured individually in 0.05-M sodium sulfate solu¬tions. Combination potentials and galvanic currents of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium were measured in short-circuited two- and three-electrode systems. All poten¬tials in this study are quoted in volts with respect to the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). Barrick Goldstrike Inc.'s Betze/Post Open Pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A. (see location Map, Figure 1). About ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County. The final Betze/Post Pit configuration is shown in Figure 2, Pit Configuration. The final pit will be about 2450m long by 1550m wide, elongate in a west-northwesterly direction. The pit straddles the Barrick/Newmont property boundary. The highest elevation of the pit perimeter is 1800m at the south wall, with the east end pit bottom elevation at 1200m.

In the aftermath of the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center, groundwater control was of immediate concern. Water in?ow from the adjacent Hudson River through the compromised slurry wall ‘bathtub’ surrounding the site, ruptured water and sewer mains, and saturation from fire hoses all contributed to an already critical situation, further hampering the recovery and rehabilitation effort. An extensive pumping and deep well installation program was initiated, focused on reducing the hydrostatic loading to the severely damaged perimeter slurry wall.

Geometallurgical characterization is increasingly used in the mining industry to model ore types, predict process performance and identify potential recovery issues ahead of time. However, most geometallurgical assessments are based on bench- or laboratory-scale analyses of relatively sparse samples, leaving most of the orebody characteristics known only by inference until the rocks are actually mined. In this pilot study, we test drone- and tripod-based hyperspectral imaging for mapping mineralogy across mine highwalls, dumps and leach pads. The results show that hyperspectral imaging can successfully map the types and distribution patterns of key minerals (especially carbonates, sulfates, clays, other phyllosilicates) and other important features (such as lixiviant ponding on leach pads), bringing geometallurgy into the field to provide crucial inputs to process decisions.

This paper is concerned with the problem of calculating ground movement that occurs as a consequence of mining. Solution to this problem is straight forward in principle but rather complex in practice. The complexities of the problem arise from the ever present constraints of technology and economics. However, the identity of these constraints is often obscured by a faulty understanding of the fundamentals of the problem and a lack of appreciation of current computational capabilities and costs. As a consequence much time and effort are sometimes wasted on gathering information that is of little direct value to ground control programs while important input data are neglected. This paper therefore reviews the essentials of the process of formulating the ground movement problem. Emphasis is upon application to longwall mining, although much of the discussion applies to other mining methods as well. In many instances, the hardrock term stope could be substituted for longwall panel because the fundamentals of the problem are independent of the excavation dimensions and numerical values of rock properties. The latter affect the outcome of a calculation, of course, but not the underlying formulation. Only the major features of the problem are discussed in this brief review. The objective of the discussion is the generation of a reliable basis for developing a technically sound ground control strategy. Any rational ground control strategy must be consistent with basic physical laws. For example, under static conditions, equations of equilibrium must be satisfied. Operational, that is, tactical, details may vary widely with local conditions, but the basic approach must be based on physical laws. The alternative empirical route is intrinsically unreliable and unnecessary as well. Empirical descriptions of ground motion caused by mining including recent statistical curve fits to specialized data sets (for example, surface subsidence data) as well as antiquated "theories" of ground pressure and so forth, however dignified with mathematical formulas, are hardly worthy of the label "theory". Extrapolation of statistical data is always accompanied by rapidly diverging confidence limits, while empirical equations simply lack predictive capability under circumstances even slightly different from those of the original development. For example, applications of surface subsidence curves generated empirically in the United Kingdom to coal mines in the United States generally result in considerably greater subsidence and wider subsidence troughs than actually observed. Locally, empirical criteria for specific ground control actions may be made practical through trial and error, but such tactics are no basis for the development of a general ground control strategy. In this regard, it is worthwhile to recall the traditional scientific distinctions between speculation, hypothesis and law, between the empirical and the proven.

From the initial flow sheet and preliminary design until the plant is completed and operating, each phase of the work must be thoroughly explored for simplicity, workability and high efficiency. A possible process for extracting tellurium and antimony from a residue generated in alkaline sulfide leaching of telluriumbearing alkaline skimming slag was proposed. The central composite design was employed to define the optimal leaching conditions for tellurium and antimony extractions from the residue sample. Using a 23 factorial matrix, the best performance for tellurium and antimony extractions (96.36% and 99.64%) were obtained at 175 g L−1 Na2S concentration for 80 °C during 60 min. The notable degree for influencing tellurium and antimony extractions was leaching temperature, Na2S concentration, and leaching time. The analysis of variance results indicated that the regression model was significant and suitable to be used for the optimization of independent variables within the range. The model was validated under optimal operating conditions based on the experimental design results. Antimony and tellurium in the leach liquor were separated and recovered by H2O2 oxidation followed by Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. 98.93% of antimony was precipitated selectively during H2O2 oxidation, while 95.06% of tellurium was precipitated during Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. NaSb(OH)6 and elemental tellurium was obtained as the product.

The hydrology of in situ leach mining operations is being studied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines using a variety of techniques, and the Bureau has made significant advances in tracking and modeling the flow of leach solutions in rock formations. However, the influence that leach solution composition has on the hydrology of these systems is poorly understood, and geochemically-controlled changes in the hydrologic characteristic of ore deposits during in situ leach mining of porphyry-hosted, copper oxide ores have not been previously studied. The Cyprus Casa Grande in situ leach mining operation mines fracture-hosted and disseminated copper oxides (predominantly chrysocolla) hosted by granodiorite porphyry using a pattern of underground wells. The injection solution consists of sulfuric acid raffinate from a solvent extraction-electrowinning plant. Chemical analysis of representative injection and recovery solutions reveals that gangue cation concentrations in these solutions are high, and geochemical modeling shows that the solutions are saturated or nearly saturated with respect to gypsum, jarosite, and various amorphous oxides. Precipitation of these solids is evoked by calcium-exchange reactions, rising pH, and perhaps locally rising redox potential, as the leach solution reacts with the ore minerals, host rocks, and the atmosphere. Mass and volume balance calculations show that approximately 25 cm of precipitates are formed per gram of copper recovered at Cyprus Casa Grande. The results of geochemical modeling agree with petrologic examination of pre-and post-leach core samples from the leached horizon. Moreover, hydrochemical modeling and hydrologic field data suggests that chemical precipitation causes significant decreases in porosity and permeability during in situ leach mining of porphyry-hosted, copper oxide ore.

Eastern Mesabi taconite is one of the hardest rocks known, but fortunately it shows little tendency to pack in the crushers, when the minus 5/16 inch material is removed. The crushing circuit is essentially as shown in the Engineering and Mining Journal article, "Reserve's New Taconite Project", dated December, 1956 except that the grizzly screen between the two stages of gyratory crushing has been eliminated. The Reserve operating staffs aim is to utilize the crushing equipment in such a manner that the maximum tonnage of taconite can be crushed to the required size at a minimum cost. As is readily apparent, the primary consideration is to produce a desired size product, with the other operating factors to be balanced, thus achieving the best setting for each crusher. Much effort has been expended toward the development of a satisfactory sized material for feeding the rod mills. The characteristics of this feed must allow the following situations to be handled by the existing equipment: 1. The material being fed to the rod mill must be such that it can be fed into the unit with the proper quantity of water to maintain the correct density within the mill. 2. The rod mill must produce a product from this feed which can be handled without difficulty by the magnetic cobbing and ball mill circuit. 3. The incidental tramp must not exceed that quantity which can be handled easily after the rod mill and after the ball mills.

According to Arbiter (Reference 1), the ball mill was invented by Brückner in Germany in 1876 and was first used in the United States on ores about 1905. The basic concept was a simple rotating cylindrical drum in which the tumbling action of the charge of material and grinding media resulted in size reduction of the material. Despite the very low mechanical efficiency of this method a number of factors have caused the tumbling mill to remain, by far, the most widely used piece of equipment for mineral grinding. The principal factors influencing this situation have been simplicity of design, ease of manufacture, ready adaptability to familiar material handling layouts and the absence of practical alternatives acceptable to the industry. In the early mills, the material was ground in batches, the mills being charged and discharged through doors in the shell. The shell was supported by means of solid trunnion shafts resting in plain bearings and the drive was accomplished through one of these shafts. In some later batch mills, the mill shell was supported on rollers which were also used to drive the mill. At an early stage, continuous operation was made possible by feeding and discharging the mill through hollow trunnions, the method still in most widespread use. The mechanical and structural design of the early mills was not an onerous engineering task. Norse sense and good practical knowledge were key qualifications. The mill shells had to be heavy enough to withstand the physical abuse they would receive in the field and the bearings had to have low enough unit pressures and sufficient wear retol to ensure several months of operation before the need for replacement occurred. When these requirements were satisfied, stresses developed in the equipment during operation were insignificant and the majority of structural failures were probably due to the use of inferior materials in manufacture. Over the years, the ever present demand for increased productivity has resulted in a steady Increase in the size of units of production equipment, including grinding mills. New erosion, corrosion resistant metal, ceramic, and polymer composite technologies are being developed and marketed by Alanx Products L.P. for use in hydrocyclones, pumps, valves, and other applications in mining and minerals processing. This paper will present an overview of the ceramic/metal composite material system and properties developed, which include excellent erosion/ corrosion resistance. Wear data will be shown from a variety of laboratory tests in dry and wet conditions, in aqueous neutral and corrosive environments. Comparisons will be made with a variety of competitive materials currently used in the industries sited. Data will also be presented on field tests with pumps and hydrocyclones in hard rock mining and other abrasive/corrosive environments. Field data from North and South America, as well as Australian mining applications will be highlighted.

In the context of this session on "Practical Placer Mining," a projection of the present into the future first assumes that there is a future for Placers. The second assumption is that there is the combination of adequate reserves and a willing, mining investment source to finance placers. This paper will point out the opportunities on both assumptions, illustrating my positive position on the future of gold placers. In order to focus this paper more effectively, I have chosen GOLD as the subject mineral. However, it is recognized that much of the technology for exploring and mining gold placers has been applied to other alluvial deposits; including platinum, diamond, tin, and various industrial minerals (which are often referred to as "placers" though this contradicts historical definitions). Over the past 10 years I have presented several papers on the general subject of placers, most of which are listed under References. These have included topics such as exploration, evaluation, small-scale gold placer mining and decision-making, mining and processing equipment designs, and dredge-mining operations. In an attempt to identify the more promising, undeveloped placer potentials in the world I have usually mentioned the USSR and China but qualified them as being either inaccessible, or, politically difficult to obtain. However, with recent developments in the USSR, the obstacles appear to be somewhat diminished.

Mining and Process Solutions (MPS) most advanced process, GlyCatTM is the only process that can be easily adapted to existing cyanidation plants in the market today whose real advantages over cyanidation are when treating copper containing ores, concentrates or tailings. With such complex material, GlyCatTM requires 70-90% less cyanide addition to achieve the same precious metal extraction. However, GlyCatTM is not simply cyanidation with added glycine. It is a completely different process where the solution chemistry and conditions needed to effectively leach the precious metals are quite different. Downstream however, the process is largely unchanged as the recovery of the leached gold and silver uses existing known processes such as conventional activated carbon or zinc cementation (Merrill-Crowe process). Another advantage is lower SCN, OCN, WAD and no free cyanide in the effluent which can substantially reduce cyanide detoxification requirements and decrease the OHS and ESG risk of the operation. This paper outline some of these differences and presents testwork, piloting and process examples to highlight the advantageous of this new process over conventional cyanidation.

Mineral property appraisers engaged in eminent domain actions on properties for which mining is the highest and best use must be fully competent in all phases of mineral resource estimation, mine project development, and mine operations (or retain the requisite competent assistance), as well as educated in eminent domain appraisal (USPAP Competency Rule). Failure to ensure such triggers the issue of appraisal competence and demonstrates a flagrant disregard of the myriad code(s) and guidelines to which the appraiser is subject. The cavalier assertion of some vague, undefined “latitude” in the valuation process does not exonerate the appraiser from a disregard of the USPAP Competency Rule. Lack of independence (i.e., “advocacy”) in mineral property appraisal is the usual result of a weak background in mining and/or appraisal theory. While it is readily apparent to those able to recognize it in reports and testimony, judges and juries cannot be expected to detect or recognize purposefully misleading (or even fraudulent) valuation concepts or testimony. Purposeful deception by the appraiser can lead to specious over-compensation of the property owner (thus victimizing the taxpayer); or, a failure to provide appropriate and just compensation to the property owner – yet, the purpose of an eminent domain proceeding is to leave the property owner no richer or poorer as a result of the taking. This paper highlights some of the deceptive practices encountered in litigation settings and raises issues of competency, professional ethics, and the effectiveness of the inherent enforcement capabilities within those institutions awarding professional certifications. INTRODUCTION The practice of eminent domain mineral property appraisal requires (particularly with respect to undeveloped mineral properties) that the appraiser possess the requisite level of competence in all phases of mineral resource estimation, mine project evaluation, mine development, and mine operation (through closure). To the extent the appraiser lacks such competence, it is incumbent on the appraiser not only to divulge this lack of expertise but also to seek competent assistance in the performance of the appraisal. This competence or expertise can only be obtained through a combination of appropriate and relevant technical education and direct mining industry experience. There exist a number of professional certification and/or credentialing authorities that speak to such competency. In a similar manner, eminent domain mineral property appraisal (as the term implies) also requires that the appraiser possess the requisite level of competence in the practice of eminent domain appraisal. This competence or expertise can only be obtained through appropriate and relevant education, direct knowledge of appraisal theory, particularly as it relates to the concept of eminent domain, and licensure.

The Doyon Mine in Quebec, Canada, evaluates the possibility of desulfurizing its tailings to produce material to be used as cover for the acid-generating tailings disposal site. Laboratory tests showed that a single-layer cover made of desulfurized tailings placed over reactive tailings can prevent the generation of acid mine drainage. Modeling with the software Vadose/W was used to optimize the design parameters, namely, cover thickness, water table position and residual sulfide content of desulfurized tailings following laboratory work. It was found that the optimal configuration includes a 1-m (3.3-ft) desulfurized tailings cover containing 0.8% S, with the water table kept at the interface between the reactive tailings and the cover. To maintain the cover performance to reduce oxygen flux toward acid-generating tailings even in the event of a long dry period, a sand layer is suggested to protect the cover from excessive evaporation. It is possible to reach the environmental objective for oxygen flux chosen for the Doyon Mine (10 mol/ m2/year) with the protective sand layer, even in extremely dry conditions.

World food production is not matching the exploding increase in world-population. Since arable land is limited, ways are being sought to increase yields by turning_ to fertilizer. Phosphate, an essential fertilizer ingredient, is undergoing a period of growth unparalleled in history. The United States is at once the world's largest producer of food and of phosphate rock. Both food and fertilizer output in the United States are being enlarged to meet the demands posed by the threatening world food crisis. New phosphate deposits are being developed in Florida and North Carolina to assure the United States' continued preeminence in this vital resource. Large fertilizer complexes are also being constructed with an eye to both domestic and foreign markets. The growth of the U. S. phosphate industry has been characterized by developing technology in the processing and distribution of phosphate raw materials. The trend from low analysis to high analysis materials accompanied by a change from a large number of small fertilizer plants oriented toward the marketplace to a fewer number of large plants located at the raw material source is illustrative. These changes in technology and distribution have also been important factors in the development of new mining areas in Florida, the Western States and North Carolina.

The use of sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) in most of the operations in byproduct molybdenum flotation comes with safety concerns and, in some instances, a high reagent cost. Engineered solutions at the various operations where NaHS is used have immensely reduced the possibility of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas evolution. However, the threat of exposure remains, and this, coupled with the high dosages of NaHS consumed, supports the continued search for alternative depressants. This paper focuses on efforts to study the applicability of disodium carboxymethyl trithiocarbonate (DCMT), an organic depressant, as an alternative to NaHS. Bench-scale rougher flotation results for samples from the Sierrita copper–molybdenum (Cu–Mo) plant showed the best DCMT performance at 8 kg/t of DCMT, pH 10.5, 30 min of shear conditioning and 10 min of flotation conditioning. The Aminpro plant model simulation confirmed that 4 to 8 kg/t DCMT under certain shearing and conditioning times achieved superior or equivalent Mo–Cu separation efficiencies when compared\ to NaHS.

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, one of the world's largest iron ore producers, operates a 3.0 million tonne per year pelletizing facility at Dampier in Western Australia. The plant produces pellets for the export market using a blend of natural hematite fines from the Company's two mines at Tom Price and Paraburdoo. Processing includes fluidised-bed drying of the ore feed, open circuit dry grinding, disc balling and pellet induration in a travelling grate furnace of Dravo-Lurgi design.

Surface contamination of minerals during fine grinding may occur due to coating of one material on the other. This can alter the surface chemical properties and adversely affect the separation of minerals by physico-chemical processes. In dolomite-silica system, selectivity was completely lost (compared to a synthetic mixture) after wet grinding of the minerals in spite of using a dispersant. Adsorption and surface characterization studies were conducted on silica particles separated after grinding with dolomite. SEM-EDAX analysis indicated the presence of dolomite on silica particles, which could cause the loss of selectivity.

The term shortwall mining is somewhat of a mis¬nomer. It may infer a longwall mining system, but of much shorter face length. Actually, continuous pillar mining is a more descriptive term. Coal is mined using a continuous miner as would be done in pillar extrac¬tion, but with the addition of roof supports to control the caving. Face length on such a system typically is 46 to 61 m (150 to 200 ft). The coal is cut in front of the roof supports in the same direction as with a long¬wall shearing machine or plow, but it is mined with a continuous miner and shuttle cars of the same type as used in continuous mining. ROOF SUPPORTS Roof supports for shortwall mining must be con¬siderably larger than those used for longwall mining because of the additional roof to be supported by the wider 2.6- to 3.4-m (81/2- to 11-ft) cut of the continuous miner. Capacities of shortwall chocks in current use vary from about 454 to 726 t (500 to 800 st). The higher capacity as compared to longwall roof supports is needed primarily because of (1) the greater support length, hence more roof weight, and (2) the presence of draw slate in the eastern coal seams, where shortwall is being used. The most popular shortwall support currently used is the four-leg 590 t (650 st) model. This support is shown in Fig. 1. The price of this support is approxi¬mately $25,000 each. As shown in Fig. 1, the shortwall chock incorporates an unusually long forward bar that has an additional hydraulically operated extension bar to provide face support for the wide miner cut. METHOD OF OPERATION Mining Sequence In shortwall mining, two or three (depending upon the chock design) move up cycles of the chock are needed because of the miner cut width.
