As one of the more important Industrials Minerals, gypsum occupies a significant place in the economy of the United States, particularly in that segment which can be loosely called the Construction Industry. For many years, products made from gypsum have been a major building material, and the usefulness and versatility of these products is such that their widespread use is expected to continue. In 1968, according to U.S. Bureau of Mines statistics, the value of all gypsum products sold in the United States was 405,000,000 - and although this value has dipped from the 1964 high of $ 432,000,000, it is expected to trend upward in the next few years to equal and surpass this figure as the construction industry recovers from its current squeeze of "tight money" and high interest rates. There are many factors to be measured in determining the potential value of any mineral deposit, and how it might fit within its particular industry. What, then, are the qualities which a gypsum deposit must have in order to profitably participate in the four hundred million dollar plus business which is the gypsum industry? First let's consider the geology of gypsum, the geographic distribution of deposits, and the more important factors such as size, grade, capital requirements, and operating cost. Then, an understanding of the uses of gypsum, various types of products, and location of markets would be helpful, along with such other factors as the structure of the industry, price trends, etc.

"Managing slurry is a constant challenge for mining operations. Since slurries are not uniform, the challenge is complicated by varying rheology, velocity, temperature and pressure, all of which affect how the slurry moves through the pipeline and how destructive it is to the system it is flowing through. Picking the right equipment from the outset — the right size pipe, the right size pump and the proper valves for the application — allows mines to operate more efficiently. Better valve designs deliver multiple benefits — they can lower the cost of operations, reduce the amount of maintenance and associated downtime required and are better for the environment. Historically, modulating systems have used ball, plug and pinch valves to manage the flow of slurry, but each of these alternatives has limitations. Ball valves require ceramic lining in order to delay wear, and once a ball valve does wear, the entire valve must be replaced. Similarly, plugs in plug valves should be coated to perform in control systems, and whole valves must be swapped out upon wear. Pinch valves are expensive and only require replacement of the sleeve. However, sleeve replacement involves an extremely arduous process in which the valve is completely taken apart.Traditionally, designers have avoided using knife gate valves (KGV) in modulating systems because KGVs have not been able to hold up under the harsh operating conditions. The throttling that is required in some of these processes rapidly fatigues conventional KGVs, rendering them useless and in need of replacement. Fortunately, innovative design changes have the potential to change established views.Breaking new groundRecognizing the need for improved components, Victaulic took on the challenge of designing a valve that could withstand abrasive slurry systems for a much longer period of time. The first step in this process was to talk to miners, maintenance personnel, process engineers and operators in the field about the limitations of current offerings and then determine design specifications for an ideal replacement.Many of the responses to these inquiries were very similar and reflected challenges with current operations; the primary objective was to find a valve that would be lighter and cheaper than the valves currently in use. In theory, a lighter valve would be easier to replace, and since replacements need to be performed frequently, a cheaper valve seemed like the right idea."

The characteristics of comminuted hematite products using a high pressure grinding roller (HPGR) and conventional jaw crusher (JC) were comparatively studied by screening, optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) techniques. Major properties investigated included product size distribution, particle cracks, specific surface areas and pore volumes. Results showed that in a closed-circuit operation with a screen opening of 3.2 mm, the HPGR and JC gave a similar P80, but the HPGR achieved a more uniform size distribution, more fines and a higher crushing efficiency. Three modes of cracks were identified, namely transgranular cracks, innergranular microcracks and intergranular microcracks. Transgranular cracks originated from shearing breakage. Innergranular and intergranular microcracks were generated by HPGR via the two main nonrandom breakage forms, preferential breakage and interfacial breakage, depending on their respective ability to endure stresses when mineral phases (particles) were loaded against each other. The BET values for the same-size fractions showed that HPGR products gave higher specific surface areas and more pore volumes than JC products. This indicates that HPGR-crushed products are easier to grind because of their high porosity and extra cracks.

El modelamiento de la dinámica de fluidos computacional (CFD por sus siglas en inglés) implica la creación de un dominio de cálculo llamado malla o rejilla para resolver las ecuaciones que definen la física del flujo de fluidos. Este proceso comprende a menudo emplear la mayor parte del tiempo en esfuerzos de modelamiento. En un proyecto patrocinado por el Instituto Nacional de Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional (NIOSH), los investigadores de la Escuela de Minas de Colorado utilizaron un enfoque innovador de mallas, el cual permite una fácil adaptación del modelo CFD para adaptarse a una variedad de geometrías de minado de tajos largos ventilados por canales (bleeders) y progresivamente sellados (referidos a menudo como bleederless en los Estados Unidos), con la porosidad y la permeabilidad de la cámara escalables en un amplio intervalo. Let's start with a bit of History. Before the advent of woven wire screen cloth or perforated plate as we know it today, screens or sieves, as they were called, were probably made by the Greeks or Romans around the year 150 B.C. Coarse openings were made from bamboo or other woven reeds or with holes punched in leather hides, while fine openings may have been made using hair from the long tails of horses woven with small openings. The first metallic woven wire screens were probably produced by the Germans in the 15th Century. All of these screening devices were, of course, hand operated. The first records of mechanically driven shaking screens are found in "John Smeathon's Diary of His Journey to the Low-Country" in 1775. He was the English Civil Engineer who built the famous Eddystone Light House and discovered the formula for making hydraulic cements. He described a screen the Dutch were using as a wooden frame on which woven wire was mounted. This box was inclined at an angle and hinged on the lower end. The upper or feed end was equipped with a pulley so they could raise it up, say 5" or 6", and then let it drop abruptly onto a sill or stop plate, thus jarring the material deposited on the woven wire through the openings. Material that was passed over the deck was scooped up and redeposited on the woven wire for rescreening. This was an early form of what is today known as a recirculating load.

"R.E. Janes Gravel Co. is an aggregates producer is located along a paleo-channel of the Ogallala formation (locally known as the Slaton Channel) approximately 48.3 km (30 miles) southeast of Lubbock, TX. In an attempt to beneficiate the 25.4-mm (1-in.) concrete aggregate product, a log washer was installed in the processing line to liberate and remove fines (clay) from the finished product. The introduction of this extra cleaning step increased fines in the finished product, exacerbating the original problem. Several other processing options were investigated before a geological analysis was undertaken to try and define the lithology of the formation and formation characteristics in an attempt to alleviate this problem.Initial assessmentsThe mined resources are mid-Miocene to early Pliocene (16-4 mya) in age and is the eastern exposure of the Ogallala formation of the Southern High Plains escarpment. The Ogallala formation consists of coarse-grained alluvial sediments in paleovalley channel ways from the Rocky Mountains with fine Aeolian and paleosol deposition on the uplands across the High Plains region of the United States. Locally, these Rocky Mountain sediments from New Mexico were transported and deposited in a paleochannel that is approximately 0.805 km (0.5 miles) wide and 15.25 to 18.3 m (50 to 60 ft) in depth. As this channel cut across the Southern High Plains it eroded local rock sources of Late Cretaceous limestones and Triassic sandstones and mudstones incorporating them into the younger Ogallala depositional sequence.Depositional historyThe channel currently being mined is a nontypical Ogallala deposit. The Ogallala in the panhandle of Texas is divided into two units, the Couch and the Bridwell. The Couch is the older of the two and exhibits alluvial sedimentation of thicker and larger gravel (up to 76.2 mm or 3 in.) deposits fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick friable caliche deposits. The Bridwell overlies the Couch and is characterized by alluvial sedimentation, a distinctive red tint and smaller gravel components (typically no larger than 25.4 mm or 1 in.) fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick, well-indurated caliche cap. The Slaton Channel divides these two units and shares lithologic components of both, yet is lithologically distinct due to its Cretaceous Age limestone gravels that can be < 3.66 m (12 ft) in size. Caliche/calcrete is a calcareous (CaCO3) deposit that forms in the B horizon of soils as a rain water leachate of CaCO3 from the upper A horizon."

For the purpose of this discussion a small flotation concentrator is defined as a facility having a designed ore feed rate of 1,000 metric tons per day (MTPD), or less. The decision to design and construct a small flotation concentrator is the culmination of a series of logical steps relative to the ex¬ploitation of a potential ore body. The information required for a rational and timely decision regarding plant design and construction is usually contained in a feasibility report. The information required in a thorough feasibility report has been summarized (1) (2) as follows: Type of mine or plant and proposed daily, monthly, and yearly production of all intermediate and final products. Quantity of indicated ore reserves. Location of project illustrated by a map showing surroundings, trans-portation facilities, and existing utilities.

Coal mine planning has three distinct decision levels: (1) decisions made at the upper level of management that determine production requirements for specific mines, (2) decisions made at the middle management level, the mine level, that determine how the mine satisfies its production requirements, and (3) decisions made at the operating level of management, the sectional level, that determine the sequencing of machine movements at the face. In this paper, the underground production scheduling problem is formulated in multi-stages using the Hierarchical Production Planning (HPP) approach. Two linear programming HPP models for accomplishing decisions at the first two levels are developed. Both models address the aggregate production planning process. The Mine Production Scheduling (MPS) model permits determination of monthly production and inventory levels. The Section Production Scheduling (SPS) model incorporates a quality blending requirement into the determination of weekly sectional production and inventory levels.

The evolution of open-pit mining has been rapid during the last two decades. The development of larger, more productive and efficient equipment has been one of the key factors in this open-pit advancement. Selection of the proper equipment and its correct usage is paramount to successful operation while maximizing return on investment. The quantity of material being moved prior to mining the saleable product is increasing at a significant rate. For example, at a southwestern copper mine more than two hundred million tons of over- burden have been removed prior to exposing an ore which contains less than 1% copper. A recent survey of twenty-three Western Hemisphere copper mines reveals the average strippingratio was 2.2:l with a range of 0.9-8.5:l. In the face of increased mineral demand, the resulting technological developments and rising overburden to ore ratios, many open-pit mines now use totally different concepts for the removal of ore and overburden. An increasing number of these concepts now being installed include wheel tractor scrapers as a major part of the material handling system for unconsolidated overburden removal. To say scrapers move only unconsolidated overburden is incorrect. On the contrary, ripped phosphate rock, copper ore, iron ore, and moderately consolidated overburden are also being moved by scrapers in various areas of the world. As reported in the Minerals Year- book, however, about one-half of the material moved in metal and non-metal mines is never drilled and blasted or broken by other means. We will, therefore, in this paper, concentrate on the role of wheel tractor scrapers in unconsolidated overburden; the area of greatest usage.

"This project analyzed the efficiency of incorporating the use of directional drilling technology into coal overburden blasting. Directional drilling is currently in use in the petroleum industry and it is believed that it will be a valuable asset in the mining industry. This project has shown that directional drilling can be a viable technology for use in the coal overburden removal process resulting in increased drill utilization and potential for cost savings. Future work regarding blasting and geotechnical evaluation should be performed to solidify the concept. INTRODUCTION Determine the Potential Drill Utilization Improvements and Rock Fragmentation Requirements Using Directional Drilling in a Coal Mining Overburden Highwall Application was a project funded by Atlas Copco Drilling Solutions (Atlas Copco) based in Garland, Texas. The project was developed and researched by Montana Tech of the University of Montana. This project was intended to show how the use of directional drilling can increase drill utilization, while decreasing costs, without sacrificing overburden blasting results. This paper discusses a review of the literature, the methods performed, conclusions and future work Background Atlas Copco theorized that an alternative approach to drilling a cast blast pattern would be beneficial to coal mining operations by increasing drill utilization and therefore, decreasing overall costs. Increasing drill utilization results in an increase in the amount of time the drill is being productive, more drill bit time in ground. Atlas Copco’s theory is that by incorporating directional drilling in the design of a cast blast pattern, a drill rig could drill multiple directional holes, which are the length of the cast blast, from a single drill set up. A drill goes through a series of steps to complete a blast pattern, these steps include: tramming to the hole location, leveling the drill, drilling the hole, cleaning the hole, and retracting the drill steel. This process is repeated hundreds of times until the whole pattern is completed. The most time intensive part of this process is drilling out the blast pattern. Integrating directional drilling into this process could decrease the overall time it takes to drill out a blast pattern by minimizing the amount of time spent tramming and setting up for each subsequent hole. Tramming and drill set up are two aspects of the drilling process where the drill tool is not engaged with the ground and, therefore, not being utilized. A cast blast pattern designed to utilize directional drilling will allow the drill tool to be “in the hole” longer and will improve drill utilization. This change in drill utilization was analyzed. Drilling and blasting is an integral part of the mining process, without it mining would be a slower process and less material could be mined. Drilling provides holes for explosives to be loaded and then blasted. Blasting has been found to be the most cost effective method of fracturing rock in mining for material removal. Blasting is also used as a low-cost method to move the rock in open cast mines, commonly referred to as cast blasting. A cast blast is a large blast designed to allow for the maximum amount of overburden to be removed using explosives in a single blast thereby uncovering more coal at a lower cost. Not all the material is blasted to cast-to-final, which requires that material to be moved with large mining machinery. Material that is considered cast-to-final is material that has been thrown far enough to never be moved again in the coal extraction process, therefore it is in its final resting place. A typical cast profile and cast-to-final area is shown in Figure 1."

A completed feasibility study executed by an independent agency can benefit a company in two ways. Inside the organization, it verifies the project staffs ideas and their concept of the facility. Outside the company, it can be utilized to obtain equity partners, debt financing, and other forms of credit. It is advisable to bring in a project execution contractor for the feasibility study. A project execution contractor is able to work with engineers to develop the project concept, process flowsheet, and best utilization of the site. By getting an early start on understanding a company&apos;s policies and working methods, a project execution contractor saves the company money since it does not have to go through the educational buildup twice. The contractor is a specialist in putting together a bankable document that can be taken to a financing source. It answers all the agency requirements on the first pass. In addition, the contractor can advise an owner on likely financing sources since he works on the worldwide market every day. A less obvious advantage of including the contractor in the study and predevelopment buildup stages is the importance of coordinating finance and technical input. The financing source influences equipment specifications, procurement, logistics, project schedule, cash flow, and liquidity. There are many surprises in store for any manager of a large international project involving worldwide financing and purchasing. The job does not have to be made more difficult by bringing in a contractor after all predevelopment steps are taken. The contractor can still work if the predevelopment steps have been done, even if he does not agree with them. But early contractor involvement is the preferable solution.

Large companies join large companies, small companies join small companies, and large companies join small companies. Mining companies join oil companies, chemical companies, machinery companies, and companies with no other connection to the minerals business. And well they might, for here is a way for both minerals-oriented companies and those that have no background or knowledge of the minerals business to get actively involved in an outwardly-attractive but high-risk enterprise with the chance to participate in a lucrative minerals find. Thus, for reasons beyond those normally associated with joint ventures in many other fields, corporations, companies, groups, and even individuals are looking to joint exploration ventures as the answer to all problems of getting into or staying in mining.

The Fabrica Mine of the Brazilian iron ore company Ferteco mines on an extremely inhomogenous ore deposit. A large amount of the crude ore consists of fines minus 100 micron which cannot be sold without further treatment because of its chemical and physical properties. In order to make full use of the mined crude ore an expansion program has been realized which incorporates among others a concentrator to produce classified blast furnace ore , sinter feed and pellet feed. The pellet feed is converted in a 2.5 million tons per year Lurgi Dravo plant into high grade pellets. The paper discusses the selection of the concentration process, the pelletizing process and describes the experiences with the operation plant during the startup and the first years of operation.

Modem mineral processing plants handle large amounts of ore and produce large tailing streams. Plant performance can be optimized when the water is quickly recovered with a thickener. The caisson thickener was developed to overcome process and mechanical problems with the conventional traction and center column units. The caisson is a hollow center column that serves as a pump house. The rake arm structure is supported by a hydrostatic bearing which sits on top of the caisson. The caisson thickener with a hydrostatic bearing has operated for many years in several mineral processing applications.

A mathematical model is presented for the electrokinetic dewatering of suspensions of phosphatic clays. The modeling approach couples a boundary-element model for solution of Laplace?s equation to a recently developed constitutive equation that relates the change in solids content with applied electric field and time. The observation that the electric field controls both the maximum solids content achievable and the time required to reach that value is shown to severely constrain the application of electrokinetic dewatering strategies to an entire clay settling area. The approach, however, may be feasible for implementation as part of a continuous plant process.

This study examines a process for the recovery of precious metals from difficult minerals that exhibit refractory characteristics to cyanidation: low extraction of metals and high consumption of leaching reagent. A mineral sample from Monte del Favor Mine, located in Hostotipaquillo, Jalisco, Mexico, was physically and chemically characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), fire assay and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Two stages of leaching were carried out, first to eliminate manganese from the sample using sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) as a reductive reagent along with sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and second to dissolve gold and silver with hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO). The results show extractions of around 96 percent for manganese (Mn), 98.73 percent for silver (Ag) and 83 percent for gold (Au). The usefulness of high acidity and Na2SO3 to obtain better results in Mn and Ag leaching are discussed along with the roles that HCl and NaClO play in Ag and Au dissolution values.

The wide scale acceptance of the heavy media separation is due to its simplicity and efficiency. The two most important variables of the process are specific gravity and consistency of the medium. The latter is a function of the settling rate of the media solids. The almost always present clay in the feed and conse¬quently in the medium acts as a stabilizing agent, and its optimum concentration varied between 3-4%.(1,2) Since polymers essentially perform the same function in oil well drilling muds - i.e. to suspend cuttings during drilling - as the fine clay in heavy media separation, this led to the investigation of whether polymers could be used in heavy media separation as supporting agents. During the first phase of the work, it was found that by the controlled addition of polymers, the stability of the heavy media increased without unduly increasing viscosity of the suspensions, thus yielding conditions for more effective and efficient separation. The results of the experiments were reported in a paper at the AIME Centennial Annual Meeting, March 1971.(3) This paper presents the results of the experiment carried out during the second phase of the work.

"In the global mining industry, there are those who seem resigned to the fact that the mining industry has always operated according to certain time-tested principles that don’t involve jumping on every new technological trend. Others expect that mines will soon have autonomous electric vehicles running around the clock. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. In business, as in life, that is usually the best path to follow.The instant access to people and information provided by 21st-century technology continues to push businesses in all industries toward greater efficiency and unheard-of levels of modernization. And in the world of mining, the embrace of advanced technology is all about managing risk.However, even in this age of digital information overload, some mine sites still require employees to physically download data from individual trucks to monitor payload data and inspect road conditions using a clipboard. What’s more baffling is that other mine sites still have no way of tracking tons moved at all.This isn’t due to a lack of innovation in the industry. Quite to the contrary, there is an abundance of new technology available that provides real-time monitoring of vehicle movements and tracks road conditions without the intervention of people. So why are owners reluctant to embrace advances in mining tech?Gauging the value of changeSurvey data has traditionally been captured by ground laser scans and LIDAR systems. A mine site surveyor would drive around the pit with a truck-mounted scanner to generate a point cloud. This process would be completed every few days and would take an entire day.The many cons of this method far outweigh the pros. First, it provides no visual data. If an operation has moved beyond the roller wheel and tape measure, visual pit models and LIDAR scans are typically completed once every six to 12 months by an aerial flyover, but such sporadic information gathering isn’t likely to result in the most actionable data. Moreover, given the high cost (in terms of both money and time), the numerous safety and liability issues, and the lack of flexibility in scheduling, manual processes are more trouble than they are worth.Overall, while miners are excellent operators who value innovation, their employers often try to outsource it or acquire innovators instead of investing in existing technology that can improve current operations. Bentonite is a common name applied to a variety of clays that develope swelling properties when associated with water. Useful bentonite deposits occur in many Western and Southern states. Their origins may consist of the alteration of volcanic sediments or the decomposition of shallow lake deposits. The specific type of bentonite that will be discussed in this review will be only the Western or high swelling sodium type bentonite that is mined primarily in Wyoming. Wyoming bentonite first entered the market in the late 1880&apos;s when it was used as an oil absorbing cosmetic. In the 1920&apos;s it was discovered that superior binding properties were present which created new opportunities in pharmaceutical, animal feed, and steel foundries. The swelling properties that were exhibited by the high swelling Wyoming bentonites soon led to its use in oil exploration when the rotary drilling process developed a need for multipurpose fluids. Bentonites in general and Wyoming bentonite in particular have fascinated chemists and process development specialists since the 1920&apos;s. There exists a long list of industrial uses that has led to hundreds of patents and extensive literature reviews. The binding and swelling properties are developed as a result of large surface areas and high cation exchange properties. Water, being a di polar molecule, attaches to the ionic vacancies and forms a network of tightly held water particles which in turn produces an impermeable seal or a binding characteristic in unconsolidated powder. Newer uses for Wyoming bentonite that once again utilized the binding and swelling properties include the pelletizing of iron ore and a vast array of civil engineering applications including slurry trenching, lagoon sealing, and garbage landfill sealing.
