The expanding volume of maritime coal transportation is intensifying the problems concerning large vessel service, port construction, trans-shipment, and environmental control. The major problem is the shipment of coal. Customary methods for bulk transfer must be improved and new systems developed. Slurry unloading has a key role in the new systems. This report reviews progress in slurry transportation research that has been done in Japan since the 1960s, when large-scale experiments for domestic transportation were done. Experiments on the effects of vibration on the slurry cargo and on reslurrying are focused on.

A real time data acquisition system has been developed for implementing standard radiometric analytical techniques, applied to the monitoring and control of mineral processing plants. The system uses standard ECB-bus microprocessors and peripherals, in conjunction with a specially designed nucleonic pulse ADC. It is being applied to the accurate on-line analysis of naturally-,occurring radioelements in processing plants, for example by simultaneously measuring the intensity of 1.46 MeV gamma-rays from the naturally-occurring radioisotope K-40, and the stream density by gamma-ray transmission of 662 keV gamma-rays. Gain stabilisation of the NaI(T1) scintillation detectors is maintained by the microprocessor in slave units, each of which may control up to four sample presentation systems. Data analysis - including corrections for bulk density, radioactive decay of the Cs-137 gamma-ray source, pulse pile-up, dead time and external background - is carried out in a master computer which is connected to the slave unit, and can be interfaced to the plant control computer via data links.

Evaluation of the stability of a structure under given boundary conditions requires accurate knowledge of the state of stress as well as the mechanism of failure at the critical state of stress. This paper represents a part of the research done by N. K. Bohidar during 1965-1968 for his Ph. D. research in Mining Engineering at the University of Utah. It summarizes the determination of internal stress and failure phenomena around cylindrical openings in viscoelastic media subjected to lateral restraint and vertical uniaxial load. The conditions of lateral restraint and viscoelastic nature of the media represent conditions associated with subsurface openings in rocks. The financial assistance provided to the project from the University of Utah Research (Uniform School Fund), W. C. Browning Scholarship Fund, Earth Science Research Fund, and D. C. [This paper represents a portion of a lager study, concerning dispersion patterns of major, minor and trace elements in wall-rock about ore-bodies in part of the Colorado Mineral Belt. This phase of the work pertains to the Mg/Ca ratio variations in wall-rock adjacent to ore-bodies in two mines of the Alma-Horseshoe Mining District of Central Colorado. The mining district is located 80 miles southwest of Denver (Figure 1) on the east flank of the Mosquito Range. The area is typified by rugged relief with altitudes from 10,500 to 14,000 feet.]

Design for economical operation, minimum operating labor and minimum maintenance for labor and supplies are virtually inseparable. Each consideration has a vital bearing on the other. Let us assume that we have the design complete for the most economical operation with a minimum of operating personnel. This means, in addition, that we have the fewest number of operating units consistent with the product requirements for a team or metallurgical coal which we are called on to produce. The number of units will vary greatly, being influenced by design, washability characteristics, tonnage and degree of quality control necessary by reason of producing a product for metallurgical, steam or domestic use. The ldaho Cobalt Belt represents a unique geologic environment containing some of the largest known reserves of cobalt in the United States. Stratabound cobalt-copper-gold deposits formed within a sedimentary basin that was generated by the rifting of an Archean cratonic block. Host rocks for these deposits are the Early to Middle Proterozoic Yellowjacket Formation comprising a suite of clastic sediments, volcaniclastics, and mafic tuffs that accumulated in the intracratonic rift basin about 1.7 b.y. ago. Rifting was probably initiated during a regional heating and doming event that may date back to 1.8 b.y. ago. During this time, other rift basins were likely to have formed in the region. They probably represent the precursors of a much larger depositional environment having characteristics of an Atlantic- type or passive continental margin where younger formations of the Belt Supergroup were deposited. The Yellowjacket Formation has been subdivided in the Idaho Cobalt Belt into three genetic units representing various subenvironments of a deepwater clastic fan complex. A northwest- trending deep-basin structural trough accumulated fine-grained muddy sediments that were periodically interrupted by distal turbidites of the subaqueous fans. Subsequent progradation caused the deposition of coarser-grained clastics of the more proximal portions of the fan complexes. Submarine fan lobes were built across northwest-trending tectonically active basin growth faults. These in-basin structures caused a great deal of penecontemporaneous deformation within the Yellowjacket sequence. Northeast-trending fault zones formed an orthogonal set of fractures that controlled the shape and size of sub-basins, and were also an influence on lateral migration of dominantly fine-grained clastic material. The eruption of mafic tuffs at about 1.7 b.y. ago added a new component to the Yellowjacket sedimentary sequence. Around the Blackbird mine area these tuffs commonly occur either near the base or within some of the sandier sequences. Since most of the sand influxes were largely controlled by basinal tectonism, the tuffs were probably erupted during tectonically active periods of basin development. The dynamic nature of the sedimentary environment probably caused much of the tuffaceous component to be mixed with other clastics and even resedimented as volcaniclastic material. In time, the change to a higher energy sedimentation regime resulted in such a dramatic clastic dilution of the tuffs that they could not survive in the areas of the vents, and, if present, they must have been distributed elsewhere in the basin.

International Minerals and Chemical Corporation operates one of six potash mines in the Carlsbad potash basin. More than 90 percent of America's potash is produced at Carlsbad and IMC accounts for about one-fifth of that amount, Since the Company began operations in 1941 it has mined nearly 50 million tons of ore. Of the two types of ore mined at Carlsbad the principal tonnage is sylvinite in which sylvite-potassium chloride-is the ore mineral. It is produced by IMC as well as by all other mines in the area, In addition to sylvinite IMC is the exclusive producer of langbeinite ore--potassium-magnesium sulfate. From its two ores, International produces a spectrum of 8 high-quality agricultural and industrial chemical products.

In the froth flotation process the detrimental effect of slimes on the froth flotability of valuable minerals has long been known.1 Work by Aplan2 on the froth flotation of coal has shown that the presence of clay slimes causes loss in flotation selectivity, and recovery of combustibles. Obviously then the presence of clay slimes to any great extent in the froth cell feed in a coal preparation plant is undesirable. This problem is exacerbated in plants treating raw 600 um (28#) by zero material due to the variation in flotation with size. The net effect of this phenomenon in a bank of cells treating raw minus 600 µm (28#) material s that by the time adequate flotation of the coarsest size fractions has occurred the finer sizes are already producing undesirable high ash material, which often leads to unacceptable overall quality. Reduction in aeration rate and/or chemical addition to combat this, further decreases the flotation rate of the coarsest fraction leading to heavy losses of coarse low ash coal to the tailings. The above mentioned characteristics formed a key aspect of the fine coal circuitry design at Elk Run Coal Company in Sylvester, WV. The plant was designed to produce compliance steam coal (less than 1.20 lbs. S02/million b.t.u.) Desliming ahead of the froth flotation was included, as the slimes in the plant feed were clay rich, had very high ash levels, and low potential recovery. Lab testwork had also shown that poor selectivity would be expected if raw minus 600 um (28#) material was froth floated.

The town of Green River, Wyoming, is located along the Green River on an arid plateau at a elevation of 6,300 feet. Green River has become the center of a booming soda ash industry. The rapid development of coal, oil, and gas resources, coupled with the soda ash boom, have created growth pains for the area. Green River and Rock Springs have experienced a 20-25% population increase in 1973 alone. However, public officials, business leaders, and local citizens are taking positive steps to ease the problems relating to housing, schools, medical services, and recreational facilities. What Is Soda Ash? Soda ash is one of the most widely used chemicals in the world. It is an important raw material in the manufacture of glass, paper, soap, petroleum products, metals, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, plastics, and a host of other items essential to every day living. In ancient times, soda ash was obtained from water solutions of various desert earths. Later, it was produced by leaching the ashes of wood and seaweed. For the past 100 years, it has been manufactured by the ammonia-soda process, which employs large quantities of salt, limestone, and coal as raw materials.

For practical purposes, the terms "natural frequency," "resonance" and "critical speed" are synonymous. A part passing though its "critical" or "critical speed" may also be said to be "resonant" or "resonating." The vibrations of a precisely balanced part can be magnified by the structure in which it is assembled. Anyone who has driven an automobile knows that it will vibrate more at a certain speed than at others. According to the formula for centrifugal force, vibration should increase steadily with a rise in rpm. What happens instead is that the vibration not only in- creases with r m. but suddenly rises at a much higher rate through the critical speed, and then apparently smooths out as the rpm passes beyond it. To visualize what happens, consider a simple flat spring with a weight mounted at one end. When the spring is deflected by pulling down on the weight and then letting it go, the spring will oscillate, and the spring-and-weight system will vibrate at its natural frequency. If the timing or direction bf the impulses imparted to the spring did not coincide with its natural frequency, the result would be an irregular vibration that would not build up. If, on the other hand, the timing and direction of the impulses did coincide with the spring's natural frequency, the result would be a larger and larger amplitude. If the impulses were continued indefinitely, the amplitude of the spring's vibrations would go on rising [while its frequency stayed the same] until the spring broke or the amplitude of the vibrations reached an equilibrium [because frictional or other forces would tend to damp it]. Resonance magnifies the amplitude of vibrations in a relatively undamped system between 100 to 200 times over that of nonresonant vibrations. Frictional or viscous damping often reduces the magnification [from 10 to 20 times], but even with this reduction the amplitude would still be large enough to cause excessive wear, and sometimes even fractures. For example, a blower might show only 0.001 in. of vibration on the manufacturer's test stand. Installed, the blower could pass into its critical speed [the speed at which the frequency of the vibrations caused by the rotor coincides with the supporting structure's natural frequency], and the 0.001 in. of vibration could be resonated to 0.010 in., or as much as 0.020 in. The cure for such a condition would not be to lower the vibration of the blower by further balancing or better alignment but to separate the two frequencies by at least 20 to 30%.

This paper is a presentation of findings based upon an econometric model of the world zinc industry. The model was developed as a simple but useful aid for long-run forecasting and planning purposes. A structure was developed for both simulating real zinc price effects on production and consumption, and for forecasting long-run annual zinc prices and supply/ demand levels. Moreover, a methodology is provided to incorporate the effects of: (1) historic technological advances in zinc supply, and (2) the development of the competitive plastics industry. Finally, reduced form equations are used to generate ex post forecasts to evaluate the model's performance.

The relative significance of corrosive and erosive wear in magnetic taconite grinding is examined. The influence of different types of aeration, namely, nitrogen, air and oxygen on ball war was established for mild steel and high carbon low alloy steel balls. Ball wear data from dry and wet grinding tests are compared with those obtained in the presence of an organic solvent that does not promote electrochemical corrosion. 'Marked ball grinding, tests along with electrochemical measurements involving ball material and magnetite electrodes indicate that contribution from oxygen towards wear (corrosive wear) is relatively small and abrasive wear appears to be significant. Rheological properties of the slurry-appear to have an important bearing on the abrasive wear of grinding balls.

Custom Coals, International has installed and is presently testing a 225 kg/hr. (500 lb/hr.) micronized-magnetite, fine-coal cleaning circuit at PETC's Process Research Facility (PRF). The cost-shared project was awarded as part of the Coal Preparation Program's High Efficiency Preparation Subprogram. The project includes design, construction and testing of a fully-integrated, bench-scale circuit, complete with feed coal classification to remove the minus 30 micron slimes, dense-medium cycloning of the 300 by 30 micron feed coal using three different size micronized-magnetite mediums, and medium recovery circuits using drain and rinse screens and various stages and types of magnetic separators. This paper describes the project circuit and goals, including a description of the current project status and the sources of coal and magnetite which are being tested.

Since the beginning of the computing age, technical software packages have not been developed to address only programming specialists but have been dedicated to process engineers. For process analysis, BRGM is developing and commercializing three packages: ? sampling software: ECHANT 2.0 for Windows ? material balance calculation: BILCO 2.0 for Windows ? steady-state simulator for plant design, adaptation and optimization: USIM PAC 2.1 for Windows This paper deals in a first part with the main features of these three packages. In a second part, advanced models are presented for SAG/ AG mills and flotation columns. An industrial case of application is shown for each of them.

In the past we have been somewhat harrassed by the terms "'quality control" and "process control". This is especially true where the industry is dependent upon the chemical analysis of their product which in turn informs them how, well they have been controlling the process. The information which they have received, in most cases, is of an historical nature rather than of current value. The word "control" is to have more significance in future operations. This is particularly true in the metals industry. As the industry continues to process lower grade ores, and processing costs continue to rise, they must obtain more information faster to exercise "control" to its fullest extent.

The flotation separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is investigated with chelating agents and neutral oil as synergic collectors. Test results indicated that a-nitroso-ß-naphthol has a strong collectivity for wolframite and selectivity against fluorite and quartz. The 8-hydroxyquinoline has collectivity and selectivity also. They both have a better activity than sodium oleate. However, the cupferron is slightly inferior. The synergism of chelating agents and neutral oil looks promising, especially for fine wolframite particles. The activation effect of Fe2+ and Ca2+ ions on separation of wolframite from fluorite and quartz is slight. The UV absorb-spectra measurements showed that the adsorption of chelating agent on wolframite is multilayer, and flotation behavior is related to chemisorption. The chelating agent which bonds to Fe and Mn sits on the wolframite surface, and the reaction between Mn2+ ion with collector is more significant. The essentials affecting reagent activities are the bonding factor and the hydrophobic factor. These factors are discussed by structure-activity relationship theory. The synergism of neutral oil is a secondary collector likely to lengthen the hydrocarbon chain of chelating agents.

"Ventilation systems are not only an integral part of any underground mine design but are a significant contributor to the mine’s capital and operating costs. The ventilation and cooling design systems presented in this paper were part of the prefeasibility evaluation of an underground platinum mine in South Africa. The mine would ultimately operate at the depth of 1,200 m below surface with a proposed 4 Mtpa production rate. The proposed mining operation is a highly mechanized operation using diesel equipment. Significant daily production rate, large amount of equipment and expansive nature of the operation, contributed to a challenging while flexible ventilation design requirements. This paper presents how to safely and efficiently optimize capital expenditure and operating costs associated with the mine air cooling and refrigeration system through practical ventilation design practices. Successful capital and operational savings by modulating installation and commissioning of refrigeration facilities can influence the economic realization of such systems. The adapted planning and design approach provided a cost-effective advantage while complying with design safety and regulations. INTRODUCTION This paper outlines a prefeasibility evaluation of the heat loads and related cooling system to be employed at the proposed platinum mine. The paper also provides appropriate details for a comprehensive understanding of the applied methodology. The proposed mine will be a trackless underground operation using a combination of mining methods. Initially, ore zones with vertical thicknesses greater than or equal to 18 m will be mined using the long-hole stoping (LHS) method, while thinner ore zones will be mined using mechanized drift-and-fill or drift-and-bench methods; hence, a highly mechanized operation with LHDs, trucks, drill rigs, personnel carriers, etc. is envisioned. Broken rock (ore and waste) will be transported by the means of trucks to the main passes (ore and waste) and collection points. Mining zones identified in the project occur at depths ranging between approximately 700 m to 1,600 m below surface. Primary access to the mine will be via a 1,100 m deep, 10 m diameter production shaft (named Shaft No. 2), three additional shafts will be sunk to provide future ventilation and production support. Three main access levels are established as primary haulage levels and include a series of interconnecting ramps. Additional mining sublevels will be developed as necessary. Figure 1 shows the proposed shaft locations and main access levels in a 3-D elevated view. Mining is performed using highly productive mechanized methods. For this reason, an annual ventilation estimate is based on requirements for mobile equipment (i.e., 0.06 m3/s/kW). The air requirements imposed on the underground operation is further influenced by equipment heat loads, auto compression, and virgin rock temperature, as the main sources of in-mine heat."

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum in Leadville, CO seized the opportunity to show off during its 10th anniversary induction banquet on Sept. 6. "We wanted to make people more aware of the mining hall of fame and museum," said Carl Miller, its executive director. The annual event honors inductees into the Mining Hall of Fame. This year, the inductees included Paul Wheeler Allen, Joseph Rosenblatt, Arthur Fay Taggart, Joseph Toy, Joseph Wharton and John Benjamin Zadra (ME, August, pp. 60-63). Allen, of Pasadena, CA and Rosenblatt, of Salt Lake City, are both living. Only Allen was able to attend. This year's induction banquet was the first held in Leadville, North America's highest incorporated city, at 3,094 m (10,152 ft) above sea level. The banquet gave attendees an opportunity to see the museum in its century-old 6,500-m2 (70,000-sq ft) Victorian schoolhouse. Many of the 350 guests came in 1890s dress to the black-tie affair. The evening included a cocktail reception and an open house along with a catered, prime rib dinner. During the open house, attendees had the opportunity to tour the museum's 12 rooms of exhibits and displays. Among items of interest, it was noted that a framed directory of inductees now enhances the entrance to the hall of fame. The directory is organized by the inductees' names and the location of their plaques, allowing visitors to quickly find hall of fame members. Noted mining historian and author Duane Smith delivered the keynote address at the banquet. After the induction of the six honorees, attendees danced to the big-band era music of the Leadville 17-piece band BandAge. Karl Elers was the master ceremonies for the evening's program. He is a member of the hall of fame's board of directors and is chairman of Battle Mountain Gold Co. Allen was honored by the presence of 26 former colleagues and associates. He told the audience that he originally thought the museum should have been located in Denver. "But I have been proven wrong," he said. For many years, Allen was the operational executive of Cyprus Mines Corp. and a key participant in the company's growth. Allen received a replica of his mining hall of fame plaque from Thomas Falkie, chairman of the hall of fame's board of governors and president of Berwind Natural Resources Co.

Smart defense: that?s what the industry needs to play for the next four years, according to panelists at the 118th Annual Meeting of the Northwest Mining Association (NWMA), which met December 2-7 in Spokane, WA. The conference was well attended, with approximately 2,200 attendees, 244 booths in the two packed exhibition halls, and a rich offering of short courses, field trips, social events and technical sessions. Speakers at the packed legislative session articulated many of the frustrations felt by members of the mining community after the U.S. elections in November, and offered words of advice. Matthew Ellsworth, the new Government Affairs hire at NWMA, stated it best: ?Elections are like Christmas: you find out who?s naughty and nice ? and it?s always going to come again.?
