The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of a filtered air delivery system to reduce respirable dust exposure of roof bolter operators in underground coal mines. When performing roof bolting operations, roof bolter operators may experience exposure to high levels of respirable dust during a working shift, especially when working downwind of the continuous mining machine. While drilling and installing roof bolts, this filtered air system supplies a clean curtain of air over the roof bolter operator by means of a plenum mounted beneath the canopy. This experimentally designed air curtain, adapted for roof bolting machines used in this study, is based upon previous design prototypes, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and trial-and-error testing. Both the prototype and final designs were tested in the full-scale mining galleries at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) in Pittsburgh, PA before being taken underground for field testing. Test results of the system in both laboratory and field studies show reductions in operator exposure to respirable dust when the operator is positioned directly under the protected zone of the canopy.

Discussion by J. Parker Gentlemen; Rainy day in Upper Michigan, a good time to catch up on reading. Am doing that, and have a couple of questions concerning the K and P paper on roof problems and supports. I wonder if the authors can enlighten me. The compressive strength of the coal was reported as 4.4 MPa (633 psi) and compressive stresses measured in the coal seam were reported at around 27.6 and 48.2 MPa(4000 and 7000psi ). Can such a soft coal actually contain such a high level of stress? Can it be measured as if the material were elastic, or does the coal behave plastically? Can that stress level be confirmed with hydraulic load cells? And if the coal is so soft, and if it is plastic, why is the stress field not hydrostatic'? The intact roofrock appears to be unusually strong, with compressive strength reported at around 145 MPa (21,000 psi), and some failures were noted as soon as the rock was exposed. Were tests run to find out how that rock responded to the addition of moisture, from sprays or from humid air? Did moisture weaken the rock? Did it cause the rock to expand quickly, thus to induce internal compressive stress? How can the near-vertical cutters, as shown in the photographs, be attributed to primarily horizontal stresses? Did the cutters follow any particular pattern in the development panels, which might be related to a particular stress pattern? For example, did they always appear alongside the stiffest pillar? Or always along the northwest rib? Was there any evidence of the pillars and entries "rotating" under the influence of differential horizontal stresses? How much did the entries and pillars rotate as the longwall face approached and passed? After rooffalls, did the openings assume shapes which would indicate a preferred shape in that stressfield and geology? Did crosscuts always survive without damage, as shown in the sketch?

A presentation of this project was given previously at the SHE Annual Meeting, Denver Colorado February 23-27, 1987. The project concerns the development of in situ recovery of borate products from a deep-seated colemanite deposit in California. The deposit contains some 147 million tons of borate ore containing 6.4% boron oxide (B2O3). This paper involves the numerous changes in the process that has taken place since that first presentation. This paper further explains the reasons for these changes which are primarily environmentally based and secondarily capital requirements related.

The minerals industry trend toward very flotation machines, exceeding 10 m3, began in the late 1960's and responds to the continuing desire to achieve better plant economics through improved plant floor-space utilization, power requirements, and operational /maintenance manpower heeds. In general, as process design tonnage increases, the benefits of the larger flotation machine becomes more evident. The development of the larger flotation machine can be distingushed from earlier, smaller, machines in demanding a rational "scale-up" procedure to guide the basic design, thereby producing a machine prototype capable of satisfactory-operational evaluation at minimum cost. Proven flotation machine "hydrodynamic" scale-up consideration, successfully applied in the development of both the WEMCO No. 164 (28.3 m3) and No. 190 (42.5 m3) machine will be reviewed, and the resulting economic benefits of large flotation machines in high tonnage applications will be summarized.

Introduction Mining operations require maps for each phase of project development. Engineering plans, cross-sections, and isometric drawings are also needed. Maps are used for geologic interpretation, reserve estimation, permitting, property acquisition, site studies, development work, and production. Maps and drawings are essential to mining. They provide needed information. Generating these products, however, requires many manhours. The filing and organization of maps and drawings is cumbersome, due to their size. Major map changes can necessitate the production of entirely new documents and, thus, additional manhours. The volume of maps and drawings generated in the life of a single project can be extensive. For example, some utility companies have data bases containing more than a million individual maps (one reported eight million). These problems were considered necessary evils in the past. Now, with the automation of map and drawing production, improvements can be realized. Computer-aided mapping and design offers a new approach for the production, management, and storage of drawings and maps. This approach promises benefits in time management, productivity, efficiency, and flexibility. In all economic projects, the bottom line is cost reduction. And implementing computer-based mapping and design techniques can lower costs and increase project profitability. AM/FM/CAD/CAM Automated Mapping/Facility Management (AM/FM) and Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) are becoming buzz words in the engineering world. Most relevant to mining are the concepts of AM and CAD. These terms relate to the application of computers, specifically computer graphic technology, to mapping and design. CAD refers primarily to the design of components and structures in two and three dimensions. But it can apply to the three dimensional modeling of mine workings, ore bodies, and geologic structures AM refers to the automation of conventional map production. AM/CAD systems use computers to store, manipulate, produce, and update drawings and maps in two and three dimensions. Ideally, the calculating capabilities of computers are also used in conjunction with design and drawing generation, offering capabilities not available with conventional, manual mapping and design processes. To better understand concepts associated with AM and CAD applications, the understanding of a few computer-related terms is necessary. Table 1 explains some of these terms. System Features The capabilities of AM/CAD systems are based on viewing transformations. These are the basic, manipulative tools by which AM/CAD packages generate visual representations of data. Examples include the rotation of a three-dimensional object through space, the expansion or contraction of maps to fit a given scale, enlargements of small areas on maps or drawings for detailed viewing, and the generation of cross-sections from three dimensional data. "Testing of the roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) designed by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has gone through many iterations, demonstrating successful dust control performance under controlled laboratory conditions. J.H. Fletcher & Co., an original equipment manufacturer of mining equipment, further developed the concept by incorporating it into the design of its roof bolting machines. In the present work, laboratory testing was conducted, showing dust control efficiencies ranging from 17.2 to 24.5 percent. Subsequent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis revealed limitations in the design, and a potential improvement was analyzed and recommended. As a result, a new CAC design is being developed, incorporating the results of the testing and CFD analysis.IntroductionExposure to respirable coal mine dust can cause coal workers’ pneumo-coniosis (CWP), also known as black lung. If silica is present in the dust, the miner may develop silicosis in addition to CWP. CWP and silicosis are occupational respiratory diseases that are ultimately fatal and have no cure. The only method of prevention is to eliminate exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica, or quartz. The occupational exposure limit on a Mining Research Establishment (MRE) basis for respirable coal mine dust had been 2 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities. Under recently enacted legislation, this standard was changed in August 2016 to 1.5 mg/m3 for a full working shift (The Office of the Federal Register, 30 CFR 70.100, 2015). When respirable quartz is present, the mine must maintain its average concentration at or below 0.1 mg/m3. If the mine exceeds the 0.1 mg/m3 respirable quartz dust concentration, then the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced, calculated as 10 divided by the percentage of quartz present (The Office of the Federal Register, 30 CFR 70.101, 2015).The sources of exposure to respirable coal mine dust for roof bolting occupations include infrequent maintenance and cleaning of the vacuum dust collection system and operating the bolter downwind — in the return air — of the continuous miner (Good-man and Organiscak, 2003). Recent studies have demonstrated that vacu-um dust collection systems are effective in capturing bolter-generated dust if maintained and operated correctly and if proper face ventilation techniques are used. However, most expo-sure to respirable coal mine dust for a roof bolter occurs when the roof bolter machine is operated downwind of the continuous miner (Potts, Reed and Colinet, 2011; Colinet, Reed and Potts, 2013). Because of this higher exposure downwind of the continuous miner, the roof bolter is often limited to working downwind of the miner only once during a production shift."

The Robinson copper ores were mined for many years from pits containing varying ore grades, sulfide and oxide ore types, and differing mineralogy. The ores also contain gold and molybdenum values, and their recoveries are an integral part of the flowsheet development. Metallurgical responses were characterized using a standard flotation procedure. Further studies investigated primary and regrind particle sizes, reagents, and other variables. The metallurgical testing was supported by mineralogical studies. Results demonstrated a high degree of metallurgical success for flotation. Final copper concentrates ranged in grade from approximately 28 to 30% copper and copper recoveries were 89 to 95% based on laboratory and pilot plant data.

This paper deals with the role of the Maintenance Department in a milling operation; specifically, the Mines Development, Inc., processing plant at Edgement, South Dakota. The goal of very maintenance department is the smooth and uninterrupted operation of the plant it serves, To achieve this goal, maintenance men adapt various features and procedures into a program designed to fit the characteristics of their particular plant operation. A few of the basic elements of a sound maintenance program are: 1, A periodic preventive maintenance schedule. 2, A systematic inspection and lubrication procedure. 3. A training program for maintenance personnel. 4 A good equipment-history file system, 5. A carefully planned spare parts inventory.

Most of the aluminum produced in the United States today is derived from foreign bauxite deposits. Earth Sciences, Inc. initiated a program to evaluate domestic non-bauxite sources for alumina in the 1960's. In the initial evaluation of alunite, domestic resources were not sufficient to support development. An exploration program led to the discovery of large deposits of alunite in Utah and several other western states. Identification of alunite is difficult as both its physical and chemical characteristics are similar to the minerals with which it is associated. Most of the significant alunite deposits in the western United States are replacement type deposits. These deposits have formed as a result of hydrothermal alteration of volcanic, sub-volcanic, and igneous rocks. Typical alunite deposits contain between 30% and 50% alunite between 50% and 70% quartz with minor amounts of other minerals. Four mineralogical zones are common in these systems. They include a siliceous zone, a quartz-alunite zone, a kaolinite zone and a chlorite-montmorillonite zone. Total U.S. reserves of alunite were estimated at 20 million metric tons (at 30% alunite) by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1941. Here recent work by the U.S. Geological Survey estimates reserves of 252 million metric tons and potential resources at 1.4 billion metric tons. Reserves and resources estimated for 23 properties on which field work has been done by ESI are considerably higher. Most of these properties have reserves and potential resources of several hundred million metric tons. The combined demonstrated reserves at these properties are estimated to be about 650 million metric tons. Inferred reserves are estimated at 2.5 billion metric tons and potential resources at 8 billion metric tons. It appears that the U.S. has sufficient reserves and resources for alunite to be considered as a potential non-bauxite source of alumina.

For the mining industry in general and gold mining in particular the past few years have been difficult. Economic conditions coupled with growing regulatory restrictions have led to increasingly important reasons for managing assets wisely. From a public company perspective this makes sense because it ultimately provides for an increase in shareholder wealth and that's what we're in business to do. Regardless of whether a company is public or not, assets must be managed effectively to remain a player in today's competitive environment. So, as the CEO of a gold mining company, how do we manage our assets to ensure that we are satisfying our obligations to our customer --the Amax: Gold shareholder? Let me tell you. As I said earlier, the gold industry has been under siege. We have just completed our third year of average prices below $400 per ounce. When you add finding and/ or acquisition costs and development costs to operating costs, there isn't much of a profit margin left. What this environment provides, however, is opportunities for growth. In the gold business, you either grow or you die. Today, most North American gold producers have at most a 10 year mine life. We are all scrambling to add reserves so we don't become extinct. As prices remain low, opportunities for increasing diminishing reserves abound. This is the time for the opportunistic company to take advantages of market conditions and that's precisely what we, at Amax: Gold, have done!

The high-grade Th-U-Y zone is one of the numerous mineralized zones found in the El Garra El Hamra hydrothermally altered syenites in southwestern Egypt. It is characterized by the thorium minerals thorite and thorogummite, which are closely associated with xenotime-(Y). This zone of mineralization is localized in the eastern part of the El Garra El Hamra hydrothermally altered syenites. This zone does not relate to the first phase of syenites that appeared on the surface but is linked to the other, hidden phase of the syenitic body. Additionally, the fluids responsible for the mineralization of this zone belong to the late-stage hydrothermal event as well as the fault action due to the fact that it had continued reactivations for a long period of time. The studied mineralized zone also contains ceriopyrochlore-(Ce),(Ce,Ca,)2 (Nb,Ta)2O6 (OH), fluorite (CaF2) and barite (BaSO4), which are found in considerable amounts, whereas apatite (Ca5(PO4)3F) and chromite (FeCr2O4) are rarely found together with Fe-oxi-hydroxides (hematite and goethite) with a minor amount of jarosite (KFe33+(OH)6(SO4)2). Finally, the main constituent mineral in the zone is the pseudomorph perthite in addition to quartz, which is found as deformed crystals. A technological sample was collected from this zone and was found to assay 4.62 weight percent thorium (Th), 0.37 weight percent uranium (U) and 3.12 weight percent rare earth elements (REEs). From the chemical and mineralogical composition of the studied technological sample, the leachabilities of Th, U and REEs were investigated using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) agitation leaching and pug leaching methods. The latter was found to be preferred under the conditions of 0.54 ton H2SO4 per ton of altered syenite at 110 °C for two hours.

Several factors have caused less emphasis to be placed on geologic mapping in mineral exploration in the last 15 years. These include opportunities for "easy" discoveries of near surface gold and silver deposits in developed countries, and of base metal deposits as well in less developed countries, a decline of emphasis on geologic mapping in many universities, and a decline of useful mapping by government agencies in many areas. Geologic mapping is simply a way of recording geologic observations on volumes of rock larger than can be seen from one place. Since most geologic processes involve systems larger than this, mapping is also essential to understand the significance of observations made on smaller volumes of rock, such as thin sections and sample taken for chemical or isotopic analysis. To be useful, the observations recorded through geologic mapping are then interpreted to arrive at an understanding of the 3D geometry and geologic history of a volume of rock, which is used to direct mineral exploration, or any number of other purposes.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration process on the concentrations and size distributions of aerosols in an underground mine. Two active regeneration strategies were examined for an electrically regenerated sintered metal fiber filtration system, and the effects were compared with those observed for a muffler and the same system operated in a passive configuration. The effects were assessed for three steady-state engine operating conditions. The number and mass concentrations and size distributions of aerosols in mine air were found to be strongly affected by the exhaust configuration, engine operating conditions and the regeneration process. When the system was operated in active configurations, the concentrations exhibited a transient and cyclic nature. At light load conditions, the distributions of aerosols in mine air were dominated by accumulation mode aerosols for all exhaust configurations and regeneration strategies. High concentrations of nucleation aerosols were observed when the DPF system was used and the engine was operated at high load conditions. A positive correlation between accumulation of particulate matter in the filter and the efficiency of the filter in removing accumulation mode aerosols was observed for all conditions. In the case of high engine load, reductions in accumulation mode aerosol concentrations were linked to a substantial increase in number concentrations of nucleation mode aerosol. Overall, the filtration system was found to be very effective in reducing total aerosol mass and elemental carbon concentrations for all engine operating conditions. However, the system was substantially more effective in passive than in active regeneration configurations.

Synthetic indium-bearing zinc ferrite (IBZF) was mechanically activated by a tumbling mill. Subsequently, the behavior and kinetics of leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF in sulfuric acid solution were investigated. The results demonstrate that the tumbling ball milling enhances the leaching reactivity of IBZF and increases the zinc and indium extractions. The reaction temperature and H2SO4 concentration have an important effect on leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF. The kinetic model -ln(1-x) = kt was used to describe the kinetics of leaching zinc and indium from the initial IBZF and activated IBZF and to calculate the kinetic parameters. The tumbling ball milling causes a decrease in activation energy and reaction order, which indicates that the dissolution of IBZF after mechanical activation by a tumbling mill becomes less sensitive to temperature and H2SO4 concentration. For the zinc leaching, the activation energy decreases from 73.9 to 70.3 kJ/mol and the reaction order decreases from 0.72 to 0.70. For indium leaching, the activation energy decreases from 78.1 to 73.5 kJ/mol and the reaction order decreases from 0.82 to 0.69. It is found that the dissolution rates of the initial IBZF and activated IBZF are controlled by surface chemical reactions.

The energy problem of the U. S; was emphasized by the oil embargo of late 1973 and early 1974 and it seemed for a time that the Federal Government, under pressure from the general public, might take some corrective action. However, this was not the case. With the gasoline lines gone and an apparent plentiful supply of petroleum products, public concern quickly dissipated., This country is more vulnerable to an oil embargo today than we were in 1973-1974 and this fact should be of concern to all our people. Since 1968, we have used oil and natural gas at a much more rapid rate than we have been able to find new domestic sources; thus, there is an increasing gap between domestic production and consumption and we have filled the gap with ever increasing oil' imports. These imports have increased at an alarming rate in the recent past, some 58 percent in 1976 compared with 1975. Imports are nearing 8 million barrels per day. Then, by applying some simple arithmetic, at $12 per barrel, the resulting trade deficit is $96 million per day or $35 billion per year. Obviously, this cannot be tolerated by our economy over a long period of time. Historically, we have shifted from one fuel to another as is shown in this slide. In 1850 about 90 percent of our fuel requirements came from direct combustion of wood, by 1900 we shifted to coal for 70 percent of our fuel, and now about 78 percent of fuel requirements comes from oil and natural gas. The difference is that the previous shifts were voluntary and the one facing us now is of necessity.

To facilitate effective land reclamation and comply with existing state regulations, surface coal mine operators have in recent years adopted new mining techniques and equipment utilization for steep-terrain mining. In contrast to direct spoiling with draglines or shovels, these new mining methods require some form of overburden haulage from the excavation face to the point of reclamation. Although current mining methodologies such as Block-Cut, Modified Block-Cut, and Mountaintop Removal with Head-of-Hollow Fills have proven effective in achieving reclamation objectives, some production problems have resulted from pit congestion and excessive equipment delays. Recognizing this problem, the United States Bureau of Mines contracted Skelly and Loy to design innovative mining concepts utilizing conveyor haulage in place of trucks, loaders, dozers and scrapers. Project objectives required definition of current bottlenecks and development of mining systems to: alleviate bottlenecks; increase production potential; facilitate additional resource recovery; enhance reclamation; reduce safety hazards; and improve mining economics. Successful completion of project goals within a four year program involves systematic implementation of the following separate work phases: 1) Develop Concepts for Block-Cut Mining Systems; 2) Determine the Economic and Technical Feasibility of Concepts; 3) Prepare Detailed Design and Specifications of Concepts; and 4) Prepare Specifications for Conducting Field Tests of the Most Promising Concepts. At the time of this publication, Phases 1 and 2 are finalized with Phase 3 efforts well underway.

There is sufficient indication of the existence of a basic misconception in the Coal Mining industry (on a world-wide basis) as to what computer control really does, what it costs, how it works and how and what it achieves as to make this presentation a welcome opportunity to present the case in what we hope is a simple, meaningful way. A plant cannot be said to be "automated" unless the control system has the capability to react automatically in accordance with predetermined programs under a great multiplicity of operational situations.

Critical minerals are nonfuel minerals, essential to the U.S. economy and national security, whose supply chain may be disrupted. Mine wastes are potential sources of critical minerals. The goal of this project is to estimate and characterize critical minerals endowment in three mining districts in New Mexico: Black Hawk (Grant County), Hillsboro (Sierra County), and Magdalena (Socorro County), and assess their acid-generating potential. The Black Hawk district is an arsenide five-element vein deposit (Ag, Ni, Co, As, U, Bi, and local minerals like Pb, Cu, Zn, W, and Sn). The Copper Flat mine in Hillsboro district is a copper porphyry deposit. The Kelly mine in Magdalena was first mined at 1878 and are carbonate-hosted Pb-Zn deposits. Mine waste rock piles and tailings are sampled using USGS Beta sampling procedure. Geochemistry results show that Black Hawk district mine wastes samples are elevated in Ag (>200 ppm), Co (290 ppm), Ni (2,130 ppm), and Zn (8,463 ppm). Copper Flat mine tailing is elevated in Bi (111 ppm), Cu (7,453 ppm), and Zn (2,360 ppm). Downhole profile plots in Copper Flat show the positive correlation between Cu, S and Te values. Magdalena samples are elevated in Cu (5,700 ppm), Zn (129,500 ppm), and Pb (58,100 ppm). Determination of acid-generating potential in these areas suggests that Black Hawk district mine wastes are non-acid-forming while high S present in some Copper Flat and Magdalena samples can potentially cause acid mine drainage.

The Pyke asbestos deposits were discovered by Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd., in 1969 during the course of base metal exploration on the South Island of New Zealand. Extensive occurrences of chrysotile asbestos were found associated with the Red Mountain Ultramafics in the headwaters of the Pyke River, and to the north and south along the ultramafic belt for a distance of 70 kilometers. Surface evaluation and drilling by Kennecott in 1970 and 1971 identified numerous small deposits of good grade fibre in the Little Red Hills between the Pyke and Barrier Rivers. Additional drilling and three adits have been completed by other companies since that time. The property is presently held by Lime and Marble, Ltd. Of Nelson, New Zealand, and Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. This paper will present the regional and local setting of the asbestos deposits, including the geology and nature of mineralization. In addition, the exploration methods used by Kennecott in the discovery and evaluation of these deposits will be outlined. Subsequent work by other companies will be mentioned, but not described in any detail. This subsequent work did not alter Kennecott's conclusions or produce any serious changes in the interpretation of geology and mineralization. The author acknowledges the contribution of the many employees of Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd., who have been involved in the project, particularly Ramon Farmer, N. G. Comer, and A. W. McConie, who were responsible for completion of field work and reporting on the project.
