Trust in AI systems and the nature and amount of information about the system can influence decision-making. It is, therefore, crucial to understand how AI-powered monitoring systems (e.g., gas monitoring systems) influence miners’ trust and decision-making in emergency evacuation. This work focused on measuring the differences between how participants respond to a simulated underground mine emergency evacuation situation when warnings are represented as coming from a human or AI-based monitoring system. We also manipulated the amount of information participants received about the system, yielding a 2×2 between-participants survey design. The participants received an alert message about rising gas levels in a mine and provided a response on how they would react and reported their perceived safety. We also asked questions to assess their trust in, preference for AI over human-based gas monitoring systems, and whether they are willing to delegate the duties of underground gas monitoring to AI systems. The experiment results show the amount of information had a significant influence on miners’ trust and decision-making. The safety perception of participants based on age, number of children and ethnicity was significantly different from one category to another. This work provides valuable insights as the mining industry deploys AI systems to aid mine safety.

Since mercury is chemically similar to silver, it tends to dissolve along with the silver and gold during cyanide leaching. Ultimately mercury is recovered along with the silver as mercury/silver/gold amalgam which requires retorting to remove the mercury prior to refining the silver and gold. A possible approach to separating mercury from silver and gold in cyanide leach solutions is to take advantage of the replacement reaction between [Hg(CN)4]2- and Ag2S, which results in precipitation of mercury as HgS while dissolving silver as [Ag(CN)2]-. Results are presented demonstrating that mercury can be removed from cyanide solutions with high effectiveness, while, at the same time, recovering additional silver in solution. Initial experiments with static flasks in the laboratory showed a high degree of mercury removal could be achieved. Results using actual metallurgical plant products in bottle roll tests indicate the process works on a larger scale, but also results in significant gold losses if the solution being treated has high gold levels, such as carbon stripping pregnant eluent solution.

"In this study, cyanidation experiments were carried out on a massive sulfide ore sample, whose grades of the precious metals gold and silver were found to be 4.2 g/t and 311.9 g/t, respectively. Other elements in the ore were arsenic with average grade of 1,751.6 g/t; antimony, 619.7 g/t; zinc, 781.4 g/t; copper, 454.6 g/t; lead, 101.8 g/t; mercury, 324.3 g/t; and bismuth, 0.6 g/t. The first objective of test work focused on determining the best conditions for extracting gold from the ore, ground to less than 75 microns. Different influential parameters such as particle size fraction, cyanide concentration, pH and leaching time were investigated. The optimum parameters were found to be particle size fraction of less than 25 microns, cyanide concentration of 2,000 mg/L, pH of 11 and cyanidation time of 24 hours. In these optimum conditions, the highest gold and silver leaching efficiencies were 76.88 and 59.63 percent, respectively. In addition, roasting as pretreatment at a temperature of 700°C over a period of two hours was evaluated. Cyanidation testing of the roasted ore in the optimum conditions found increases in the gold and silver leaching efficiencies to 85.97 and 67.57 percent, respectively. Moreover, antimony extraction rose to 43.10 percent, from 23.73 percent without roasting.IntroductionGenerally, gold ores can be classified as “free milling” or “refractory,” depending on how they respond to cyanide leaching (La Brooy et al., 1994; Celep et al., 2009). While high gold recoveries (> 90 percent) from free-milling gold ores can be readily achieved, refractory gold ores are often characterized by low gold recoveries (50-80 percent) within a conventional cyanide leaching process (Rubisov et al., 1996; Adams, 2005; Celep et al., 2009). The presence of preg-robber components such as carbonaceous matter, sulfide minerals and aluminosilicate can further decrease gold and silver dissolution rates and recoveries. With the negative effect of the presence of preg-robbers, gold dissolution is considerably diminished in solutions with high cyanide concentration (Tan et al., 2005). In such refractory gold ores, gold particles may sometimes be occluded or included in the sulfide minerals, and pretreatment becomes necessary to break down the mineral structure to liberate gold for subsequent recovery. These ores are usually pretreated with an oxidizing process, after which gold and silver can be recovered by a standard cyanidation process. The main oxidizing processes available for refractory gold ores are roasting (LaBrooy et al., 1994; Angelidis and Kydros, 1995; Li et al., 2009; Karimi et al., 2010; Kyle et al., 2012), biological oxidation (Lawrence and Bruynesteyn, 1983; Komnitsas and Pooley, 1990, 1991; Deng and Liao, 2002; Ciftci and Akcil, 2010, 2013) and pressure oxidation (Mason, 1990; Murthy et al., 1992; Qingcui et al., 2009). In addition, ultra-fine grinding is being used in some plants for the liberation of gold and silver particles that are interlocked in the sulfide or silicate minerals (Celep et al., 2011)"

The development drilling program of the Copper Cities mine indicated that the molybdenum content of the ore would be about 0.011% MoS2' The molybdenum content of the Miami mine at the same time was about 0.025% MOS2' The Miami mill had a very successful molybdenum operation which used bleeder turbine steam from the Miami power plant for the steaming operation. The much lower grade of the Copper Cities ore, the absence of a source of low cost steam and the use of sodium aerofloat as the copper collector which Miami experience indicated did not respono readily to the steaming technique made very doubtful the success of a similar operation at Copper Cities. However, the relatively few pounds of copper that could be recovered from the low grade Copper Cities heads made very desirable the recovery of the molybdenwa,as a source of additional revenue. Accordingly, shortly after the Copper Cities mill began operation, a research program was instituted to develop a suitable method of molybdenum recovery. This program explored first, the successful steaming process then in use at Miami and as expected, found it unable to decompose the sodium aerofloat copper collector. The known chemical depressants were then tried without much encouragement. Finally the copper concentrate was dried, not roasted, to 2-3% mOisture and this along with sodium ferro-cyanide and cyanide resulted in sufficient copper depression that a final molybdenum concentrate containing 1.0% CU could be made. The title of this session seems to have been picked especially for this paper. It is 1984, it is the morning after, and there is one monumental hangover among many if not most of the oil companies that have invested in mining in the past decade or so. How an oil company looks at mining depends on what time period you are talking about. A few years back around the time of investment this is what they were probably looking at: 1. A balance sheet of their own that was beginning to go wild, with many of their commodity prices having already seen increases of two, three, or four fold, and with no end in sight. 2. A need to invest their earnings someplace fast before the stockholders or the government got too interested. And that someplace should be in an industry where their own management skills could be applied. (Only a true cynic would suggest that this is a form of job security) 3. In mining there was an industry amazingly similiar to their own, one working with non-renewable natural resources, dealing with the same types of government agencies, and having the same type of critics and pressures from the general population. 4. An industry that was somewhat backward as compared with their own, and one where a generous ration of the capital and management skills so handsomely bestowed upon the oil industry could be used to great advantage.

Latin America provides more than 5% of world output in 16 metals or ores, ranging from antimony and barite to Tungsten and Zinc. "With seven new applications for plans of work for exploration in the international Seabed Area approved by the Council during its twentieth session of the International Seabed Authority, 26 total approvals have been made by the Council up to date. Among them, three contracts were made with COMRA. On 8 August 2014, China Minmetals Corporation submitted another application to the Authority for approval of a plan of work for exploration for polymetallic nodules in the Area, which is also sponsored by the Government of the People’s Republic of China.China is one of the main contributors to the international seabed regime. The Presentation will describe China’s activities in the Area, such as exploration, technology development, environmental protection and policy making.JIAOLONG is a submersible with capacity of 7000 meters. JIAOLONG’s sea trials were carefully made in 4 years, from 2009 through 2012 and it successfully dove to a depth of 7062m in June 2012 at Mariana trench. A so called "Test Application Phase" started thereafter, and is planned to last for 3-4 years. Two cruises and 4 legs have already been made since then. A wide-range of findings were obtained during dives in South China Sea, and in COMRA’s Exploration Contract Areas for polymetallic nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts. This presentation will reveal the colorful findings."

Grinding with steel media adversely affects the flotation response of galena. Electrochemical measurements, flotation tests, and AES, XPS, and STEM examinations were employed to identify interactions between galena and mild steel. Iron oxide, hydroxide, or sulfate species that formed on the galena surface upon contact with mild steel decreased its floatability, with the time of contact and aeration condition affecting the severity of the flotation depression.. Parallel tests performed with an active metal, magnesium, indicated that floatability was also affected by the presence of a surface coating involving lead species.

"All-in sustaining cost is a metric used by mining companies to reflect the cost of gold mining in a consistent format useful to both investors and mining professionals. Cost reporting focused on the direct cost of mining and processing ore was summarized in the non-GAAP cash cost developed by the Gold Institute in 1996. In 2013, a group of mining companies, working with the World Gold Council, developed a more inclusive approach to reporting costs designed to solve the dilemma of showing a more comprehensive reflection of recurring costs involved in producing gold, without discouraging investors. INTRODUCTION Mining today plays a key role in the development of our civilization as a source of essential raw material and provider of essential fuels, producer of jobs, and a factor in support of the international balance of monetary payment (Camm, 2014). Professionals in mining locate, develop, design and manage ore deposits in an environmentally safe and profitable manner. As mineral deposits become increasingly scarce, new challenges face the industry. A current trend is to an increased emphasis on underground mining techniques for deeper deposits. Operations are safer today than before as companies understand better their work environment and the importance of mining responsibly. A continual challenge for the industry is accurately reflecting the costs and selling price of ore. An enduring characteristic of mining is the situation where the market typically determines the price of a commodity; the main control a company has on the bottom line is to control the cost of production. An attempt to bring light and clarity on the cost of their business will give a better idea to investors on the true profitability of the mining business. Gold producers face this struggle to accurately reflect the cost of production while also seeking to attract the interest of the investment community (Hill, 2013). In order to have a consistent format to report on their production costs, leading gold producers through their alliance inside the World Gold Council (WGC), worked on the adoption of a new cost framework: the All-in Sustaining Cost (AISC) and All-in Cost (AIC). Since 1996, the traditional cash cost reporting has focused only on the mining and processing costs incurred in mining an ounce of gold, which included the costs of goods sold (labor, energy, and consumables costs) and royalties (Table 1). But cash cost reporting ignores many important aspects, like sustaining capital, general and administrative expenses, and site rehabilitation at the end of the mine life (Whelan, 2013). The cash cost was used to attract many investors into the business. In fact the high gross margin (sales minus cash costs) has been promoted the past decades by the industry instead of the net or operating margin. As a result, even when the gold price was high, nearly $1900 per ounce in August 2011, gold producers were not reporting excessive profits in their cash flow / income statements, to the disappointment and incomprehension of investors (Milstead, 2014). The truth was simply that the other costs omitted in the traditional cash cost were reducing the apparent profits."

Red Dog is a Mississippian to Permian aged sulfide deposit located in the western Brooks Range north of Kotzebue, Alaska. It belongs in the family of black Shale hosted sedimentary exhalite deposits but lacks classic sulfide sedimentary textures. Pervasive silicification, and a significant portion of the mineralization, is replacement in nature. An extensive feeder vein system cuts the footwall and the exhalite package. A Jurassic to cretaceous age compressional event has repeated the ore section through thrust faulting and folding. The orebody contains 77,000,000 metric tons averaging 17.1% Zn, 5.0% Pb and 82 g per metric ton of Ag. Weathering has locally altered the sulfides to sulfates and formed elemental sulfur.

Potash production from natural brines of the Bonneville Salt Flats has a comparatively long history dating back to the start of World War I. However, it vas sot until the late 1930's that a successful commercial potash operation was achieved by a firm known as Bonneville Ltd. While improvements in operating techniques, pond design and equipment have been incorporated as they became available it should he understood that the basic technology developed in the late 30's and early 1940's by Bonneville Ltd, for potash production has not been changed significantly. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief review of the history, geology and hydrology of the Bonneville Potash operations and discuss the cur¬rent methods employed for brine collection, solar evaporation and the recovery of potash and other brine chemicals. A detailed study of the hydrogeology of the Bonneville Salt Flats wan made by L. J. Turk,1 Ph.D. thesis for Stanford University in 1969, under the auspices, of Kaiser Chemicals the Industrial Chemicals Division of Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation. Turk's thesis furnished much of the information presented in this paper.

Deposits of metals in only slightly disturbed strata have been attributed to sedimentation processes contemporary with deposition of the strata. Recently this origin has been extended' to a greater variety' of deposits and local enrichment has been attributed to selective remobilization of metallic minerals in the host stratum. Effects attending metallization and deformation, and exact age' of the metallization are compiled to establish the sequence of events in ore deposit histories in order to clarify importance of remobilization within a formation relative to introduction from an outside source into an fav¬orable host. The pertinence respectively of deposit; origin and geometry to the work of the mining geologist is reviewed. Dwarf faunas in the Clinton iron ore, Tully pyrite bed and Rammelsberg deposit, indicate abnormal metal ions in the sedimentary environment. Slight¬ly disturbed strata are host rocks in the Swedish Kolm, Timna, Kupferschieffer, and White Pine deposit; the latter two have ore only in conjunction with tectonic structures.

Fracture toughness of oil shale is an essential property in fragmentation to optimize particle sizes and permeability distributions in in-situ processes. Fracture mechanics of oil shale has been based on conventional fracture mechanics using notched samples and assuming the material to be isotropic and elastic. Oil shale is a layered material more accurately characterized as transversely isotropic. The senior author proposes to use a semi- circular core specimen with a center crack subjected to three point bending. Singular crack tip elements with isoparametric elements are used. The precracked semi-circular disk is modeled under displacement loading. The effect of crack length on the non-dimensionalized stress intensity factor is investigated by strain energy method, ellipse method, and stress method. Very close agreements are found. The fracture toughness is obtained by compressing the specimen in to failure. Parameters such as oil yield are investigated.

India’s most extensive renewable energy expansion program targets 280 GW of solar energy by 2030. Due to the massive generation of photovoltaic waste (expected 34,600 T by 2030), stringent recycling effort to recover metal resources from endof- life PVs is required for resource recovery, circular economy, and subsequent reduction in the environmental impact. The present study investigates the recycling potential of end-of-life silicon solar modules. The feed characterization reveals that most of the values in PV modules are concentrated in the frame (pure Al), Si wafer (72–84% Si, 9–12% Al, and 0.13–0.71% Ag), and electrical connections (Cu wire coated with Sn). The Si and Ag values in the feed were beneficiated using water fluidization, and concentrate with 90% Si and 2% Ag was attained in the underflow concentrate. Ag values were recovered in the form of AgCl by leaching in nitric acid and precipitation. After the purification step, the residue containing 99% Si can be further utilized to fabricate Si wafer and Al-Si alloy. The preliminary cost estimations suggest that the proposed process is economically viable for the recycling of solar panels with the maximum value generated from the AgCl precipitate followed by Al panels and Si wafers.

Surface dependent processes, such as froth flotation and flocculation, are important or potentially important techniques for combating some of the current major problems in coal preparation. In order to correctly apply or imporve a surface dependent process, it is of paramount importance to understand the interfacial phenomenon, especially the double layer properties, exhibited by the solid. The specific objective of this research was to determine the properties of the bituminous coal/liquid interface by an electrokinetic method, streaming potential, and to relate the findings, wherever possible, to the existing unit operations of froth flotation and flocculation. The electrokinetic properties of both the whole coal and its lithotypes were investigated. As part of the total investigation, the role played in the double layer by the reagents commonly employed in the surface dependent process was also established (1). These data will be presented at a latter date.

Associated with cordilleran intrusives of intemediate to acidic composition, gold/silver ores are generally found in the intruded host rocks which are adjacent to these intrusives. Generally precious metal deposits lie further from the intrusives than allied base metal deposits. For vented intrusives, the associated volcanics may constitute the intruded rock and form the host for precious metal accumulation. Potential field methods, particularly magnetics, can help to define unseen boundaries of intrusive systems and thus can point to generalized prospecting targets. Other clues arise from the intrusive system type, its emplacement fracturing, the host rock type and local magnetic changes caused by mineralization processes.

"Since ancient times, storing and conveying water via underground water systems and tunnels has been touted for its strategic advantages. Underground cisterns and tunnels assured protection of essential fresh water supplies from man made contamination and especially from enemies who would gain an advantage by disrupting an adversary’s water supply in a siege. Modern day engineers do not usually specify tunnels for reasons of avoiding deliberate contamination or siege — however, they are just as enamored with the idea of building tunnels for water conveyances.Such was the case for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). The SFPUC provides drinking water to 2.6 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in the San Francisco Bay Area. The SFPUC’s water system includes 257 km (160 miles) of transmission pipelines and tunnels from the SFPUC’s largest reservoir, the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir inside Yosemite National Park, to San Francisco. About 129 km (80 miles) of the system consist of tunnels. A 30-km (19-mile) section of the tunnel network, called the Mountain Tunnel, was thought to be at risk of a catastrophic failure in its concrete-lined section of 18 km (11 miles). For much of the project planning process, a new replacement tunnel was presumed to be required according to the tunnel planners.Originally constructed between 1917 and 1925, the Mountain Tunnel has been in continuous service since 1925. The 30-km (19-mile) tunnel is located downstream of the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir water source in Yosemite National Park, between the Early Intake and Priest Reservoir (Fig. 1). Approximately 18 km (11 miles) of the tunnel is lined with unreinforced concrete. Though the condition of the tunnel was being monitored through water sampling and periodic inspections, there was growing concern that the tunnel lining was at risk of a partial collapse that could interrupt water delivery for up to nine months. The SFPUC was faced with a decision to construct a new bypass tunnel to replace the lined section of the Mountain Tunnel or to rehabilitate the existing tunnel."

INTRODUCTION Newmont Gold Company's Rain operations are located in Elko County, Nevada, approximately 9 miles southeast of the Town of Carlin.The property was submitted to Newmont Exploration Limited in 1979 and underwent development drilling over the course of the next four years, culminating in the completion of a project feasibility study in October 1986. Initial project scope included development of an open pit mine, an 815,000 DSTPY heap leach, a 572,000 DSTPY mill (Mill No. 3), and associated support facilities. Approval to proceed was given by Newmont Gold Company management in June 1987. Detailed engineering began in early July, followed immediately thereafter by procurement of major equipment components through various second hand sources. PROJECT DESIGN Keep It Simple In early August, Newmont Mining Corporation, parent company of Newmont Gold Company, became the takeover target of an "investor" group headed by T. Boone Pickens. Details of the ensuing events have been well documented by the press; suffice to say their impact on this project was material and required immediate flowsheet changes. Project design throughputs were increased to 1,000,000 DSTPY and 760,000 DSTPY for the heap leach and mill, respectively, in mid- September. These changes caused major project headaches as all general arrangement drawings had been approved and structural steel as well as concrete contracts were in place. Additionally, ground breaking was to commence in two weeks time! Rain project management assembled shortly after the announced changes, to devise an engineering and construction strategy capable of handling these new business conditions. The project had been justified using a gold price of $325 per ounce with a forecasted overall cash cost per ounce of $230. Hence, strict control of capital expenditures was necessary to maintain development economics. Mill start-up had also been moved forward one month, to August 1, 1988. To meet an already ambitious schedule, construction techniques needed to be simple and proven as most of the facilities were planned for erection during winter at a site with design criteria of -40F and 90 mile per hour winds. Perhaps the most critical factor requiring consideration was that of personnel. Newmont Gold's revised business plan called for corporate-wide production increases from 587,000 ounces per year in 1987, to 1,400,000 ounces by mid- 1989. Labor requirements were forecasted to grow from 900 employees to over 2,100. This fact, in combination with the rapid growth of Nevada's gold industry, led to the expectation that turnover of operating personnel would be extremely high. It was concluded that, to meet cost, time, and operational goals, the necessary strategy could be succinctly put - "Keep It Simple." The indirect method of drying coal fines is applied to filter cakes which ordinarily contain 22 to 30% moisture and are not readily transportable. The "Thermal Dryer", which operates on the mass transfer principle, has found wide use in coal preparation plants. The thermal dryer is penalized in operation by the necessity of adding coarse coal to the wet fines before entering the dryer body in order to produce a permeable bed, and thus enable hot gases to uniformly contact the wet mass. The ratio of coarse coal to fines varies from 2:1 to as much as 4:1, depending on the average particle size, moisture, and ash content of the fines.
