Lancaster Lime and Stone Corporation developed a quarry operation in 1971 and 1972 for the production of high calcium limestone and construction aggregates, or roadstone. The quarry operation is situated in southeastern Pennsylvania in the northern part of Lancaster County. The geology of the high calcium limestone deposit had a powerful influence on all aspects of planning this operation. My purpose is to trace the influence of geology throughout the planning and thereby point out the discipline that geology imposed on the planning, and indeed, continues to impose on the operation. Lancaster Lime and Stone Corporation is one of four wholly- owned subsidiary companies of Kurtz Materials Corporation. Kurtz Materials Corporation, through its operating subsidiaries, is a supplier of basic materials to the construction industry including crushed stone, ready mixed concrete, concrete masonry units and a wide range of precast and prestressed concrete products.

Coal is becoming increasingly important as a major energy source in the face of the world's depleting energy mainly based on oil reserves. Coal is by far the most abundant fossil fuel both in the United States and abroad. Currently, because of increased mine mechanization, the fineness of preparation plant feed is increasing. Further, in the future as the grade of coal diminishes and the sulfur content increases, upgrading preparation of coal is very important. Because the density of coal is less than that of rock materials that occur as impurities, coal is separated from such waste largely by gravity-controlled processes for particle size between 5 inches and 28 mesh. If the size of coal particles is below 28 mesh, froth flotation is a good method for upgrading fine coal. Previously, numerous investigators have tried to upgrade coal values by froth flotation(1-16) and have achieved moderate success. However, the recovery and grade of coals in the concentrates are not always satisfactory, especially when the particle size is small. In general, when the size of coal is below 100 mesh, the above methods suffer from poor grade and low recovery. The reason for this is that as size decreases, the effects of gravity diminish, and other forces take effect.

Aqueous solutions of Na2Cr04 can be reduced with CO to produce hydrous Cr203 and NaHCO3/Na2CO3. CH3OH, HCOO and HCHO in the presence of CO2 also reduce Cr 6+ and yield similar products. It is shown that the rate of Cr6+ reduction can be represented by the expression -d[Cr6+]/dt=k[Cr6+)1/2[R] where [R] is the aqueous phase concentration of CH3OH, HCOO- or CO. With these three reductants, the activation energies for the reduction processes are comparable and are of the order of 100 kJ/mole. Rapid reduction rates are attained at temperatures in excess of 220°C and, with these three reductants, a green acid-insoluble readily filterable hydrous Cr203 is formed. With HCHO significant reduction of Cr6+ occurs at about 80-100°C and an acid-soluble violet modification of hydrous Cr2O3 is formed. The reduction process is reasonably selective: solutions of Na2CrO4 contaminated with Mo6+ and W6+ can be reduced to yield a Cr2O3 product with significantly reduced contaminant levels. These findings are utilized as a basis for a process for recovering chromium from secondary source materials.

In the Fall of 1987 The Wellmore Coal division of The United Company installed a fines separation circuit in its #20 plant near Big Rock, Va. The addition of the fines circuit included a bank of classifying cyclones and two flotation units; one a conventional 4 cell, 34 m3 Wemco cell, the other an 2.4 meter diameter by 7.6 meter tall, 28.3 m3 column flotation cell. The new fine coal separation circuit is depicted in Figure 1. The column flotation cell is manufactured by the Deister Concentrator Company, Inc., under the trade name Flotaire. The Deister Flotaire column cell utilizes a counter current flow arrangement and a different means of generating air bubbles than that of conventional mechanical flotation cells found in coal processing plants. Other features include diffusers for additional air supply and a froth washer. This cell is one of the few commercial scale column cells processing coal.

The author was the banquet speaker at the 48th Annual MPD meeting, sponsored by the SME Colorado Minerals Processing Section, May 14-16, 1998, in Colorado Springs, CO. Here are his remarks. It has been an exciting experience to have spent 34 years involved with the process of generating patented technology eventually leading to commercialization. In today's terminology, this process is called technology transfer. I have had the unusual experience of being involved doing basic research as an inventor while also being responsible for managing new product development and commercialization. In addition, I worked for 31 years before my retirement for a large research-oriented company, The Dow Chemical Co. In 1995, the company spent more than $1 billion dollars on research and development. The last three years of my career have been spent working with a research-oriented university, The University of Florida. And I have worked as a consultant helping several companies to optimize their products and processes. It is on this cumulative experience base that the preparation of this article is based.

Low-cost and environment-friendly green froth flotation modifiers of plant origin, such as guar gum, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and starch, have been used in flotation of some sulfide and non-sulfide minerals. Certain green modifiers may be used as dispersants, flocculants, depressants, or activators. The functions of green modifiers in froth flotation highly depend on their molecular composition, flotation slurry chemistry, hydrodynamic conditions, etc. This paper will discuss the fundamentals, current applications, and potential new applications of guar gum, CMC, and corn starch in valuable minerals (phosphate, potash, and iron ores) and the unwanted gangue minerals (silica and clay minerals) flotation. In this study, improved flotation performance was achieved using some green modifiers in flotation columns with the more plug-flow environments than in conventional flotation cells approaching perfectly mixed conditions. This is because the hydrodynamic cavitation-generated ultrafine bubbles could help bridge ultrafine particles to form aggregates, promote the formation of flocs, and increase the stability of flocs.

"The development of a multiple level underground mine is a complex task in which geology, engineering, ground control, and unit operations are integrated into a single mine design. The components are inter-dependent and must function cohesively to ensure a profitable underground mining operation. To optimize reserve recovery, mine planning should begin from the lowest level and progress up. This limits any misjudgments or oversights of a given level affecting the underlying levels and ensures the ability to maximize recovery from each level.Mine planning should start with the exploration and characterization of the geologic setting. Once the reserve geology and quality is well understood, then mine planning can begin with respect to the following:,Orientation of mine works with respect to horizontal stress,,Access to the reserve,,Determination of opening widths,,Selection of back, floor horizons and pillar centers,,Selection of development and secondary mining heights,,Appropriate interburden thicknesses, and,Examine the stability of the multiple level mine through numer¬ical modeling.The multiple level mine design process and decisions are presented through a case history example. The theme is that there is one opportunity to “get it right” as well as many chances to overlook a small aspect within the design that will plague the mine throughout all levels and through the entirety of its operating life.INTRODUCTIONAs surface quarries reach their economic stripping limit and encroach on mineral and/or reserve boundaries, they approach the end of surface mineable reserves. Furthermore, modern urban sprawl has placed previously remote surface quarries within suburban development and neighborhoods, leading to significant increases in noise, dust, and vibration grievances by the community and regulators (Newman, 2017). Many mining operations have begun year-round production of underground reserves to meet growing market demands. This does not permit the typical sequence of stripping overburden in the winter to provide limestone to mine during the construction season. Underground stone mining operations in the United States commonly utilize a room-and-pillar mine layout with drill-and-blast production methodology for the development of the reserve. Within the Midwest and Eastern regions, thick and flat-lying limestone formations lend themselves to the utilization of multiple level mining layouts. While a multiple level mine plan will increase the overall recovery of the reserve, greater overburden depths, multiple level geometry, and the presence of discontinuities all require an emphasis on ground control for the planning and development of a safe and productive multiple level underground stone operation."

"The drum agglomeration of nickel laterite and gold ores has been optimized through the design of experiments (DOE) using a Taguchi L16 (45) orthogonal array to determine the optimum conditions for maximizing average agglomerate size and minimizing the amount of fines. The effects of controllable operating factors including moisture content (nickel laterite ore: 34-37%; gold ore: 7-10%), retention time (2-3.5 min), drum speed (15-45% critical speed), drum load (nickel laterite ore: 8-32 %; gold ore: 6-22%) and acid concentration (150-600 g/L) on the performance of the agglomeration process were studied.For nickel laterite ore, maximum average agglomerate size and minimum percent fines (-1 mm) occurred under the following conditions: drum load (23.7%), moisture (36.5%), time (3 min), drum speed (30% critical speed) and acid concentration (150 g/L). Under the studied nickel laterite ore conditions, the most effective parameters for maximizing average agglomerate size and minimizing the amount of fines were found to be drum load and acid concentration, respectively. Drum speed had a statistically significant effect on minimizing the amount of fines. Maximum average agglomerate size and minimum percent fines (-1 mm) for gold ore occurred under the following conditions: drum load (19.3%), moisture (8.5%), time (2 min 15 s) and drum speed (40% critical). The most significant factors for maximizing average agglomerate size and minimizing the amount of fines for gold ore were found to be drum load, time and moisture.IntroductionSeveral heap leach operations have experienced problems in terms of poor recovery due to percolation issues caused by low-grade complex ores, tailings and clayey deposits. Poor percolation can lead to low metal extraction due to solution channeling or the development of impermeable/dead zones within the heap (Dhawan et al., 2012; Kappes, 2005). Improper heap building practices such as the use of loose agglomerates and inadequate attention toward the presence of clay minerals have been among the main reasons for percolation issues. During the transport of ore material, severe segregation of the material can occur. To overcome percolation problems, a major improvement was made through the introduction of agglomeration prior to ore placement. If the ore particles and agglomerates are of similar size, segregation can be avoided to a great extent (Dhawan et al., 2013; Kinard and Schweizer, 1987; McClelland and van Zyl, 1988). Agglomeration improves the uniform percolation of solution through ore heaps and is applicable to many ores, wastes and milled tailings (Bouffard, 2005; Dhawan et al., 2013). Manning and Kappes (2005) reported agglomeration/ stacking accounts for ~14% of the total heap leaching operating cost. The cost of binder is a primary contributor toward the total cost. Also, the lack of consistent quality control tests for agglomerate often leads to operational problems. The details are mentioned elsewhere (Dhawan et al., 2013). Considering the significant contribution of the agglomeration/stacking step toward the total heap leach operating cost, it is appropriate to study the agglomeration behavior and its optimization for two different ores. The reason to study the same parameters for different ores is the fact that significant variability in the agglomeration behavior of different ores has been reported to exist in industrial operations."

Most of the future phosphate resources in Florida, which accounts for 70  percent of production in the United States, are contaminated with too much dolomite that is difficult to remove with existing industrial practices. The low-grade ore quality coupled with increased phosphate demand is of concern to the Florida phosphate industry. In order to resolve the dolomite issue, various beneficiation technologies were designed and evaluated, but none have been sufficiently successful [1].

An acid mine drainage sludge containing 0.26% nickel, 0.21 % cobalt and 4.5% manganese was leached in a one-liter reactor with sulfuric acid in the absence and presence of sodium sulfite. The effects of temperature (25°C and 52°C) and sodium sulfite concentration (up to 0.03 molar) on the leaching rate were particularly investigated. The leaching rates of nickel and cobalt with sulfuric acid have been determined to be controlled by diffusion through product layer. It has been found that effective leaching conditions to give more than 90% extraction of nickel, cobalt and manganese while keeping the iron extraction below 10% come with an elevated temperature and a low sodium sulfite concentration at pH 3; for example, 52°C and 0.01 molar sodium sulfite.

This study investigated the operating parameters that affect the kinetic dissolution of copper and cobalt from sulfidic ores. The sulfuric acid concentration, temperature, sodium chloride concentration, particle size range, and leaching time were selected to deduce the kinetic mechanism of the leaching reaction. Other parameters, such as a stirring speed of 250 rpm and the percentage solid 10% w/v, remained constant. The results reveal that an increase in acid concentration enhances the leaching rate of copper and cobalt. Copper and cobalt dissolution was positively affected by the addition of sodium chloride. The highest leaching rates of copper and cobalt were 24.71% and 15.65%, respectively. The chemical control and diffusion control by shrinking core models are well fitted as the kinetic models representing the dissolution of the minerals. The respective activation energies for copper and cobalt dissolution of 10.92 and 31.023 kJ mol− 1 for the chemical control and 18.83 and 37.28 kJ mol− 1 for diffusion reaction control were established from temperature-based experiments.

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been used for the construction of various tunnels for mining projects for the purpose of access, conveyance of ore and waste, drainage, exploration, water supply and water diversion. Several mining projects have seen the successful and economic beneficial use of TBMs, and there is an increasing awareness of the benefits of TBMs for mining projects. Key technical considerations for the use of TBMs for the construction of tunnels for mining projects include geological issues (rock type, rock alteration, rock strength, rock abrasivity, durability, ground water in flows), depth of cover and the potential for overstressing/rockbursts, site access and terrain, portal locations, TBM constraints, minimum tunnel size, tunnel support requirements, contractor and labor experience, and project schedule demands. TBMs offer key project schedule benefits with high rates of progress, which is a unique economic advantage recognized for mining projects where timing is of the essence in order to advance mining development and achieve early startup for operations. A thorough evaluation of the anticipated ground conditions should be performed as part of the decision to adopt a TBM for a mining project. Minimum specifications for TBMs are necessary in order to prevent the incorrect type of TBM from being used. Appropriate geotechnical investigations are necessary in order to provide key information on the anticipated subsurface conditions for careful planning and design of the proposed tunnel alignment. The overall site and geological conditions associated with some projects may suggest that it is not appropriate to use TBMs for some mining projects due to a perceived higher risk. In May of 1984, it was decided that Outokumpu Oy would design and build a new nickel flotation mill to process ore from the newly discovered Enonkoski mine in eastern Finland. Since there hart peen a number of successful process charges in the existing mills, the design effort included the study and incorporation of several new developments, including all-autogenous grinding, "flash flotation", lane cell roughing, large cell cleaning and a computer-based, profit optimizing, process control system. The paper discusses the background and results of those studies, and a description of the resulting mill which will begin production in 1986.

Draglines are dominant machines and the most electricity consumers in surface coal mines. With the growing price of energy, environmental concerns, and the high sensitivity of mine profitability to dragline productivity, any improvement in efficiency of draglines can be beneficial for mines. Research has shown that operator skills have a significant impact on energy efficiency of loading machines. This study suggests a method to identify the key parameters that lead to differences in operator energy efficiency (responsible parameters). First, correlation analysis is used to identify parameters that are correlated to energy efficiency. Second, linear regression of a difference matrix is used to determine responsible parameters. Since this method is based on pair-wise comparison of operators, equal number of cycle is required for pairs of operators. Complete case analysis (CCA) is used to handle missing data problems. The final conclusion is made after removing the effect of random sampling and by considering all pairs of operators. Identifying responsible parameters can improve operator training programs. The suggested method is illustrated with a case study using field data.

The dressing of Bolivian tin ores has been done up to the present by classical. gravity methods, taking advantage of the high specific gravity of cassiterite compared with that of the accompanying gangue. For this purpose, jigs and shaking tables are used in the treatment of the various size fractions in which the ore is classified. Bolivian ores are mainly of the vein type and, to obtain a reasonable separation, crushing and several stages of grinding are necessary during the process to substantially liberate the cassiterite from the gangue. Gravity processes for cassiterite are effective for sizes down to 200 mesh. Below this size the efficiency of the gravity methods falls off very rapidly with increasing fineness of the mineral grains. The conventional treatment for this material is desliming followed by tabling on shaking tables various other types of machines have been designed for the gravity treatment of these fine particles but they have had limited success. Bolivian ores contain an appreciable amount of minus 200 mesh material constituted by "primary fines" caning from the mine itself, and "secondary fines" originated during the crushing and grinding necessary for liberation of the difficulty in the treatment of these fine particles is one of the causes why the recovery of tin in concentrates is only of around 50% in the mines owned by Corporacidn Minera de Bolivia, the State owned enterprise. Bentonite represents one of the main players in the stability of the drilling mud. Its particle size and particle size distribution affect the physical properties of the drilling mud especially the rheological properties. Therefore, a specific particle size distribution was recommended by American Petroleum Institute (API) for use in drilling mud. To clarify the effect of individual size and size distribution, in this study, the bentonite sample was classified into different size fractions. Each size fraction was tested separately in terms of controlling properties such as filtration loss, plastic viscosity, gel strength, cake thickness, and packing density. The effect of each size fraction on the rheological properties of the suspension was correlated to the behavior of the whole particle size distribution in the bentonite sample. The results indicate that the coarser the particles, the higher the rheological properties; in this case, the API mixture is the highest. The filtration loss and cake thickness for the API mixture are lower than that of the individual size fractions due to its wider size distribution due to the filling of voids between larger particles with smaller ones, which lead to bed compaction and consequently lower fluid loss and cake thickness.

Copper electrowinning operations have dramatically improved their ability to produce high quality copper at low costs over the past several decades. Even so, some fundamental knowledge is still lacking that could allow operations to run even more efficiently. For example, a rule of thumb exists that estimates a current efficiency loss of 2-3% per gram per liter of iron in the electrolyte. While several laboratory studies have been performed that demonstrate this rule of thumb is likely true, no definitive relationship exists. In this paper, the first steps in developing a definitive relationship are presented. The effective diffusivity of ferric ions in synthetic copper electrowinning solutions was measured using chronoamperometry and the Cottrell equation. The effective diffusivity of ferric ion was determined as a function of electrolyte concentration and temperature. Synthetic electrolytes were then used in laboratory-scaled copper electrowinning experiments, where relationships between current efficiency and solution composition were found to exist under stagnant conditions. The price records of 7 representative mineral commodities for the 68-year period 1890 through 1957 have been compiled and analyzed for significant trends. When reduced to real prices in terms of dollars of constant purchasing power or to the purchasing power of industrial wages at average rates, a substantial overall fall in prices is revealed. This downtrend contradicts the widely held concept that, heavy drafts on a mineral resource must lead to scarcity, reflected in rising prices. Three metals (aluminum, copper, and pig iron), two fuels (bituminous coal and petroleum)', and two nonmetals (sulfur and cement) have been chosen because of their preeminence in their respective categories, their significance in an industrial economy, and the ready availability of their price records. It might be added that these seven commodities. were selected before any price figures were compiled, none was selected or rejected to substantiate any preconceived notions as to price trends, The overall importance of the seven is demonstrated by the fact that, taken together, they composed over three-fourths of the value of all minerals produced in the United States in 1957. The first step in the analysis was to reduce the price records to a basis for significant comparisons, Two such comparisons have been made: (1) The quantities of each of the commodities that could have been purchased for an average hour's wage in each year; and (2) the unit price of each commodity through hhe years in terms of deflated dollars. These data are set forth in the accompanying table and two charts.
