The Buick Mine is a joint venture of American Metals Climax, Inc., and Homestake Mining Company located 120 miles by road southwest of St. Louis, near the village of Boss, in the 'New Missouri Lead Belt' (See Figure 1). Since start-up in 1969, over four million tons of lead-zinc ore have been mined and milled at Buick. Situated about 1,100 feet below the surface at an elevation 270 feet above sea level, the flat lying sinuous ore bodies are up to 250 feet wide, 85 feet high and several thousand feet long. Mineralization is galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite in dolomite, Access to the mine is through two 18'Ø concrete lined vertical shafts - one for servicing and the other for hoisting ore (See Figure 2). The mine is being worked by a modified room and pillar method using both rubber tired equipment and a sub-level rail haulage. Ore is broken from first pass headings, back and bench faces and transported by load-haul-dump units to ore passes located on 900 foot centers. The ore is pulled from chutes on the sublevel 90 feet below into 15 ton bottom dump cars and delivered in 10 car lots by a 15 ton diesel locomotive to a 42" gyratory crusher (See Figure 3). A recent innovation has been the introduction of two 50 ton trucks with plans to haul up to 60% of the ore on the mining level to an ore pass feeding directly to the primary crusher (See Figure 4). Ventilation raises up to 16'Ø, which were originally planned for 900 foot centers, are now driven on 450 foot centers.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines implemented the Fe2+ /Fe3+-SO2 anode reaction in a Cu electrowinning cell with full-size electrodes. Electrowinning was conducted using industrial electrolyte at 258 A/m2 (24 A/ft2) and 40 'C. Manifold injection of electrolyte provided circulation between the electrodes. Five-day operation using an optimized manifold gave an average cell voltage of 0.94 V at 89% current efficiency, which amounted to an energy savings of 2.82 MJ/kg (0.355 kW-hr/lb) compared to conventional electrowinning. Acid misting was completely eliminated, and SO2 concentration 23 cm (9 in.) above the cell averaged 0.06 ppm.

This paper discusses the role of the mineral-adapted acidiphilic microorganism Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans in the beneficiation of arsenopyrite-containing multisulfides (pyrite and chalcopyrite) and the bioremediation of the resulting arsenical waste water. It was found that adaptation to minerals alters the surface properties of the microorganism. Bacterial adaptation to arsenopyrite and controlled bacterial adhesion to mineral surfaces lead to selectivity in arsenopyrite separation. Bioremoval of arsenic ions (both arsenite and arsenate ions) by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is also discussed. On September 10, 1991, Secretary of the Department of Interior Manuel Lujan deleted the Silver Peak Range North Wilderness Study Area from the list of U.S. Bureau of Land Management lands in Nevada to be considered for wilderness designation. This decision was based in part on the U.S. Bureau of Mines mineral investigation of the wilderness study area which found that it has indications of precious metals resources. The following is a summary of the results of that mineral investigation. The study area lies between the Silver Peak and Dyer mining districts of west-central Nevada. The Silver Peak mining district, to the east, has a long mining history dating back to 1907 when precious-metals-bearing veins were discovered. The major producer in the Silver Peak district was Sunshine Mining Company's Sixteen-to-One silver mine. During the Bureau's study the Sixteen-to-One mine was operating; it has since been idled due to low silver prices. Precious metals-bearing veins were discovered in the Dyer district, to the west of the study area, in the 1860's. Mineral activity in Dyer district consisted mainly of prospecting. The Silver Peak study area itself has no mining history and contains only a few mining claims, but the Bureau examined 13 mineralized sites, most previously unknown and unclaimed. These sites are along two zones that cross the study area from the Silver Peak to the Dyer mining district. The two zones transect a volcanic center of fractured and altered rocks that contain epithermal veins of quartz, calcite, and jasperoid with gold, silver, and base metals. At the surface these veins are poorly defined and poorly mineralized. The more than forty veins examined in the study area are as thick as 17 feet and as long as 1,000 feet. Samples from surface exposures of these veins contained as much as 0.02 ounce per ton gold, 2.1 ounces per ton silver, 1.0 percent copper, 2.6 percent lead, and 0.4 percent zinc. Analyses of the Bureau data disclosed no vein large enough or of high enough grade to be classified a mineral resource. However, most do have indications of silver-and gold-bearing resources at depth. Subsurface exploration had to be done on the vein at the Sixteen-to-One mine to outline reserves (a vein averaging about 22 feet thick and containing 6-to 7-ounces per ton silver); the same is true of veins in the Silver Peak Range North Wilderness Study Area.

Large diameter autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding mills represent the primary thrust of the expanding grinding technology. In spite of initial difficulties, large autogenous and semi-autogenous mills have reached an acceptable level of technology which provides the mineral engineer with a reliable, low cost means of ore comminution. A successful milling installation begins during the design stage of the grinding mill and the plant it is to be installed in. This is particularly true in autogenous and semi-autogenous mills. Critical mill and plant design factors should be considered while the mill and installation are still only ?paper.? Various current liner designs will be discussed ranging from lifter bar/plate to integral types. Modes of operation such as "high-low" will be considered. Liner maintenance procedures ranging from laydown area in plant design, proper mill shutdown methods, to installation and bolt tightening complete the equation to yield optimum performance possible for any particular grinding application. The objective of this paper is to discuss trends in wear materials, designs and operating practices, and provide some guidelines for good practice as we move through the 1980's. We will put together concepts that relate to the designs, materials and applications so that higher performance can be obtained by the operator for his specific application. The concepts are shown as being in series because they are dependent on each other to achieve the desired performance.

Improved liberation and flotation of kerogen from eastern oil shale were accomplished with high-temperature grinding and a1 so with the addition of fuel oil during the grinding stage. Liberation measurements indicated that possible coalescence and aggregation phenomenon of kerogen particles during grinding may reflect this behavior. Additionally, ultrasonic treatment of the rougher concentrate prior to cleaning improved the quality of separation.

Risk analysis is used extensively in many engineering applications. Although its use in the field of dam safety has been limited in practice, it has received considerable attention in recent years in the dam safety literature. Thus far, it has been shown that risk analysis in the evaluation of existing dams has the potential for providing a more rational basis for decision- making because of its focus on the direct issues--likelihood of failure, likelihood of loss of life, and risk cost of damages. It provides for a logical balance between the risk a dam imposes and the degree to which rehabilitation is required, compared to traditional evaluations based on somewhat arbitrarily chosen design events applied to large classes of dams. Dam owners could benefit by optimizing the cost of remedial measures. Downstream landowners could benefit by minimizing the likelihood of flood damages. However, it is also clear that significant technical and policy issues remain to be resolved before risk analysis in dam safety is accepted and routinely implemented in engineering practice. An obvious and important potential application of risk analysis is its use by the state regulatory agency as an in-house evaluation tool, or even as part of regulatory policy, in the implementation of its state dam safety program. Adoption of such a policy would have an important impact on the mining industry. .Although no state dam safety programs are known by the writers to have officially incorporated risk analysis into their regulations, there appears to be considerable interest in the concept. In recent surveys 47 states agreed that the development and promotion of a risk assessment methodology for state dam safety programs should be encouraged (Tschantz, 1983; Tschantz, 1984). The issue has also received important attention within the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (1986). One state-Illinois-proposed regulations during 1986 to allow risk analysis to justify lower spillway requirements for existing dams (Illinois Department of Transportation, 1986). At the Federal level, the National Research Council has found risk analysis especially appropriate for assessing dam safety at high-hazard dams (National Research Council, 19851, the Bureau of Reclamation has published guidelines for incorporating risk analysis into their dam safety grogram (U.S. Department of the Interior, 1986), and the Federal Emergency Management Agency has recently sponsored workshops and supported research related to risk analysis in dam safety (Federal Emergency Management Agency, 1985a ; Federal Emergency Management Agency, 1985b; - - McCann, et. al., 1985a, 1985b).

Previous mine incidents show weaknesses in mine rescue preparedness from poor training in decision making, leadership and incident command center (ICC) protocols. Computer simulations offer a larger range of training opportunities for mine rescue teams focusing on exploration and communications. The mine rescue simulator developed by the Colorado School of Mines and Rite Solutions Inc. utilizes four computers for the instructor and team, with the instructor monitoring the team?s progress. As the team explores, it relays information back to the Fresh Air Base, which then reports to the ICC. This forces a three-step communication procedure, enhancing the team?s overall communication skills and developing ICC protocols. The simulator is decision-based, demanding team decisions be made quickly. Upon completion, teams commented positively. Generally, participants said that the simulator is useful for learning how to communicate and make decisions during mine rescue emergencies. This mine rescue simulator improves team training, providing effective communications practice with an easy setup and no production interruption.

It is a pleasure to be here today to discuss coal's prospects with the Society of Mining Engineers of AIMS--- a group destined to play a crucial role in shaping our national energy future. Much has been said lately about attaining domestic energy self-sufficiency, but to date, little has been done. Oil tankers from Venezuela and Kuwait continue to glide across the seas to meet our incremental energy needs. Meanwhile, our principal domestic energy resources -- oil and natural gas reserves in the Outer Continental Shelf and the oil shale deposits and the coal lands of the West -remain untapped. Help, however, appears to be on the way. In a forceful address last fall, President Ford called for the elimination of oil as a fuel for base-loaded power plants and its replacement with coal by 1980. He also urged the accelerated leasing of federal lands on the Outer Continental Shelf, the resumption of coal leasing on federal lands, and the development of a new energy conservation policy. There are, of course, many details left to be worked out. Language must be developed to put statutory flesh on the conceptual bones spelled out by the President. Congress must act. Regulations must be approved and tested, if need be, in court.

The pelletizing process for low grade iron ores has undergone continual changes since its inception over twenty years ago. These changes have necessitated filtration equipment changes in order to produce a product suitable for balling. With modern techniques it is now possible to produce pellets of 68% Fe from ores containing as low as 26% Fe. Low grade ores require fine grinding to liberate impurities This shift to finer grinds over the years has necessitated major changes in the filtration steps. Techniques are now available for producing suitable product from ores with Blaines as high as 3600 cm2/gram. This has been made possible by the development of high performance filters. Recent developments have reduced maintenance costs and produced higher production reliability. The paper discusses iron concentrate filtration from its beginning to present day design. It will be shown that the dewatering step prior to balling has gone through four generations of filters. Particular emphasis is placed upon hydraulic studies which have allowed today's optimum designs.

Rio Algom Mines Ltd. owns eight uranium mines and mills in the Elliot Lake district of Ontario, seven of which were producing before 1960. At present only one mine is operating meeting current contract requirements. Under present economic conditions, it is not feasible to mine ore of less than 2.0 lbs./ton U308, although there are very large reserves below this grade. We are interested in preconcentration for three possible applications: to extend ore reserves by permitting use of lower grade ore, to reduce costs on processing of present grade ore, and to reduce capital investment in expanding production to meet future production goals.

There is pressing need for better means of exploring ground conditions ahead of mining. Exploration drilling has the drawbacks of high cost and a seriously restricted sampling zone. Traditional geophysical exploration methods including gravity, magnetic and resistivity techniques have been used with some success underground, but all give poor target delineation relative to range, since they depend upon minor distortions of a potential force field. Much greater ratios of resolution to range can, in principle, be obtained by employing electromagnetic or seismic radiation as the exploring agent. This is because propagation time delays can be used to measure range accurately, and to separate the small effect of a distant target from the much larger effects of nearer targets and of the transmitter. Seismic waves have long been used with great success in exploration for petroleum, and recent research on their application underground is promising. Electromagnetic (radar) waves have been very successfully used for detection and location through the air and outer space, and have also explored through polar icecaps more than a mile thick.l It is not generally realized that below the soil many rocks are also somewhat radar-transparent, and that radar can be used for exploring such rocks, once a quarry, a mine, a borehole, or other means of access has been opened. Radar waves are reflected by any boundary or object where they encounter a large change in electrical properties.2 The usual cause of such a change is a difference in moisture content. The Ireland Mine is located some seven miles South of Moundsville West Virginia, along the bank of the Ohio River. We are mining the Pittsburgh #8 seam. This seam is approximately 60" in thickness, and is immediately overlain by some 10 feet of a conglommerate material. The roof is difficult to control, due to the fact that it frequently is composed of substances not hard enough to be held together with 6-foot roof bolts. In many cases, we must use 10-foot roof bolts, in order to get bolt anchorage in the limestone above the conglommerate. Due to the elasticity of the limestone and its tendency to bend rather than to break, we have been unable to maintain a pillar line. Thus, we have found it necessary to mine by the room and pillar system. Belt haulage is used on room entries to automatic loading stations, thence into 15-ton mine cars, controlled at the loading point by car spotters. The maximum belt length is 2,000 feet. Rail haulage to the slope-bottom dump is by 27- and 50-ton locomotives. The mine produces coal two shifts per day, with 7 production crews on each shift. Mine and machinery maintenance is performed on the Midnight shift. We handle an average of 660 tons per machine shift.

Coeur d'Alene Mines Corporation (CDE) is a precious metals mining company. The company's three mining operations are located In Nevada and Idaho. Collectively, these mines (Rochester in Nevada, and the Galena and Coeur In Idaho) produced about 61,000 ounces of gold and more than 7.5 million ounces of silver in 1991. The company is currently planning the development of two major properties; the Fachinal gold-silver project in Chile and the Kensington gold project near Juneau, Alaska. Fachinal and Kensington hold encouraging potential to significantly expand CDE's gold production during this decade. The permitting process for these two distinctly contrasting environmental settings, project design requirements and regulatory/political circumstances provide the basis for a comparative analysis of licensing and permitting requirements, timeliness of the permitting process and costs in the U.S. and Chile.

By its nature, underground metal mining is unlike any other business in the industrial sector. Operations are continuously exposed to economic risk as a normal consequence of mining due to uncertainties associated with the? deposit, excavation, and ever changing political, regulatory, and market conditions. Out pacing advances in productivity and technology, these conditions have contributed to the steady decline of underground hardrock mining in the United States. This paper investigates the trends and major factors believed to be responsible for this decline. Special consideration is given to changes in direct operating costs, labor productivity, and production capacity.

The potential use of prereduced pellets in the burden of the blast furnace continues to be a topic of interest. Several excellent papers have been written describing the theoretical and experimental rewards. (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) (9) Significant increases in iron output and substantial savings in coke consumption are major advantages over conventional iron oxide pellets. The savings are especially important in areas where good coking coal is at a premium. Lower handling and transportation costs may also be factors favoring prereduction. When considering the overall cost of making and smelting prereduced materials the optimum metallization level becomes significant. An analysis by Agarwal and Pratt of the thermodynamic aspects of blast furnace operation with all prereduced pellets shows that the criteria controlling coke consumption depends upon the degree of reduction and upon the percentage of oxygen (present as FeO) removed by solution loss.(8) The authors state that although the chances of obtaining large fuel savings are greatly improved when metallization is high, reduction to the highest degree, which is costly, may not result in the lowest energy requirement per ton of hot metal; thus, over reduction could possibly result in wasted energy in the blast furnace.

When I wrote the Railroad portion of "Mining Engineering" magazines 94 Powder River Basin (PRB) Coal Article I described to you some definite destinations the Railroads had in mind. As with many destinations, the ones I wrote of turned out to be merely stops on the way to places that we have yet to reach. Somewhere along the way we discovered that making it better is a continuous process not just something that you can do in phases I, II, III, & IV. We always knew this I suspect, but perhaps not at the awareness level that exists in RR environments in 1997. The purpose of this article is to update the 94 article, which I could do very quickly. Everything I told you we were going to do in 94 is done, end of story! But in addition to making it a very short article it would not be telling you the things RR has done beyond what we were planning in 94 and for the future.

In February of 1989 the Mission Complex of ASARCO Incorporated completed an expansion of its concentrator, raising the base mining rate from 25,900 TPO (28,500 STPD) to 37,200 TPO (41,000 STPD). The expansion was accomplished by extending the twelve existing Mission ball mills in length, by installing the grinding circuit from Asarco's idled Sacaton Concentrator along with various auxiliary equipment, and by modifications to the flotation circuit and water systems. This paper will give a brief history of the consolidation of the ore body which made the expansion possible and explain the various parts of the expansion.

First of all, I want to thank John Dunlap for asking me to this AIME meeting in Denver. I was first introduced to Denver and The Rocky Mountains more than ten years ago and immediately decided it was one of the most attractive spots in the world. I've come back many times since and still welcome any opportunity to return, even if it means I have to prepare and give a paper on potash. When John Dunlap gave me this assignment, he told me that the program would include papers on the geology of potash, papers on new discovered potash deposits and new mines and asked me to discuss potash from the commercial point of view. He also asked me to include a supply/demand outlook for potash. However, one thing he did not mention was "how far into the future he wanted me to look" and it seems to me the time element is a crucial factor to you who are both geologists and miners as well as to me. In your case, you have to look far enough into the future to give you time to explore, find, evaluate, develop, and bring into production a commercial deposit. My mining associates and friends don't agree on how long that takes but it's probably somewhere in the range of eight to fifteen years. But, they all agree on one thing and that is that the time required is continually getting longer. Now my time problem is just the opposite. It is "relatively" easy, and I stress relatively, to identify and evaluate the importance of the various factors that impact on both the supply of and demand for a commodity such as potash if the time period is today. It gets a little tough if one has to project into tomorrow or next week or next month. And when we start talking in terms of a year, five years or ten or fifteen years, things really get sticky and the old crystal ball becomes mighty cloudy. But we economists and forecasters are not known for our temerity so let me get on with the job at hand and take a look at the world potash supply/demand outlook.

Assessment of abrasivity and cutter life are necessary to properly manage risks when tunneling in mixed face ground which includes ground with cobbles and boulders. Maximizing cutter life requires: (1) abrasivity and strength parameters for soil matrix and rock clasts, (2) methods of combining both, (3) proper selection of cutters and (4) modified TBM operation including use of boulder detection methods from the TBM to help make operation decisions. This paper presents approaches for addressing these factors sufficiently to improve tunneling success in mixed-face and cobbly-bouldery ground. Current laboratory abrasivity testing will be assessed along with equivalent quartz content correlations to soil matrix and rock clast abrasivity. New approaches to combining abrasivity testing of both the soil matrix and rock clasts for various cobble and boulder volume ratios will be suggested to estimate cutter life and intervention intervals. Methods for detecting boulders and using detection data to modify TBM operations to minimize boulder impacts are provided.
