The sign of the surface charge for alkali halides in their saturated brines has been established from non equilibrium electrophoresis measurements and on this basis the flotation response of alkali halides was explained based on the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. These surface charge results for alkali halides are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory with some exceptions, specifically LiF, KCI, NaCl, KBr, RbBr, KI, and Rbl .The presence of natural oxygen defect states in the crystal lattice and the inaccuracies involved in the gaseous ion hydration free energy values used appear, in past, to be responsible for these deviations. The presence of natural oxygen defect states in KCI, KBr, RbBr, and Rbl as characterized by UV Nis absorption, was found to account for their anomalous surface charge. Further, other positively charged alkali halides, LiF, NaCl and KI, were found to be free of oxygen defect states. Nevertheless, oxygen defects can be created in these alkali halides to make them negatively charged and has been demonstrated for NaCl. Such negatively charged NaCl can be readily floated with positively charged amine collector colloids thus confirming the surface charge/collector colloid adsorption theory.

INTRODUCTION The increasing concern for the environment may well present far more opportunities than problems for those involved in all phases of tunneling. All too frequently in the past, environmentalists and their concerns have been cast in a negative light, as obstacles to be overcome. Often forgotten is the fact that these same environmental concerns have created a rapidly increasing demand for new tunnels. Tunnels for rapid transit projects, clean water supply, and sewage treatment have been given a boost because of environmentalists' concerns about overuse of automobiles, inadequate water supplies, and improper sewage disposal. Concurrent with increasing use of tunnels to help solve or alleviate some of our environmental problems is an obligation not to create new ones in the process. Concerns which we feel responsible tunnel owners, engineers, and contractors should address themselves to include: (1) Minimum energy consumption, both during construction and in operation of the completed project; (2) proper storage and/or disposal of the excavated material; (3) minimum disruption during the construction process - noise, traffic, unnecessarily unsightly work areas, and possible weakening of foundations of nearby structures; and (4) a finished project consistent with community and environmental goals. We are especially concerned about two things. First, the longrun implications of a project -- what's good for a few people in the short-run may be bad for most of the people in the long-run. The Stillwater Mining Co. of Nye, MT, is operating a platinum-palladium mine that requires an extensive system of footwall laterals to facilitate mine production. The 10-year mine plan calls for more than 48,300 lineal m (160,000 lineal ft) of footwall lateral. A rapid tunneling and raising system is necessary to sustain mine production schedules and achieve production goals. This article describes the results of using a Robbins 4.1-m-diam (l3.5ft-diam) tunnel boring machine (TBM) to develop the footwall laterals and a Robbins RBM-6SP raise boring machine to develop raises at the mine. The Stillwater Mining Co is a partnership between Chevron Resources Co. and Manville Corp. Chevron Resources is the managing partner. When the mine began production in September 1986, the owners were primarily concerned with the actual production of platinum and palladium, the grade minable and the amount that could be mined. As mine development and mine production proved feasible, the owners considered higher production levels. The Stillwater Mine is developed by a system of adits (known as footwall laterals) that are driven parallel to the ore bearing zone. This led mine officials to consider using a mechanical boring machine in the primary mine development. Previously, tunnel boring machines have not been used successfully in mining applications. Therefore, the owners decided to purchase a used machine to reduce the potential risk.

This study reports that routine mining activities could produce a high number of nanometer sized particles which have not been well characterized and may represent an unacknowledged exposure present in the mining environment. A preliminary survey of the particle emission from the feed-leg drilling activity was conducted in the excavations of an experimental mine. The level of particulate exposure was monitored by real time direct reading instruments include a NanoScan scanning mobility particle sizer (measurement range 10-420 nm) and an optical particle sizer (measurement range 0.3-10 μm). Particulate morphological and structural examination was conducted through transmission and scanning electron microscopy and x-ray dispersive analysis of samples collected by a thermophoretic sampler, and a novel nanoparticle sampler. The real time instrument data revealed high concentrations (> 3.5 x 106 particles/cm3) of ultrafine/nanoparticles generated from the drilling activity. Analysis of particle sampler specimens with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy showed a large amount of submicron silica, spherical primary particles and agglomerated soot particles rich in carbon. Exposure to particles in the nanometer size from various sources within the mining environment may be associated with the poorly understood rise in respiratory and systemic disease among miners. INTRODUCTION Exposures to mine dust have been measured and evaluated for decades. Exposures to aerosolized dust such as coal or silica particles can cause lung and other diseases (1-7). One way that The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) characterizes inhalation exposures within the mining environment is through measuring the respirable dust mass concentration within the breathing zone of workers (8). Respirable particulate matter (RPM) is of great concern due to its ability to deposit in the alveolar region of the lungs (9-10) where it can affect respiratory function. Interventions championed by MSHA have greatly reduced the prevalence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). Although great progress has been made, the prevalence of CWP and PMF appears to be trending upwards and the measured increase in prevalence is not elucidated in RPM measurements (11-12). Though the presence and risk associated with ultrafine particles such as emission from diesel engine within the mining environment has been previously established (13-14). There is suspicion within the mining industry that this resurgence of lung disease may be due to very fine particulate matter from various source that is not properly characterized by current sampling methods. Nanometer sized particles, in the range of ultrafine particles, fall within the RPM size range and have been found to deposit in all regions of the respiratory tract (15). Nanoparticles are commonly accepted as particles that are greater than 1 nm in two or three dimensions but smaller than 100 nm (16). Once in the lungs, nanoparticles can enter the blood stream (17) and selectively affect other target organs such as the heart, liver, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, and brain (15,18-19). The size of nanoparticles has been shown to correlate with their translocation behavior on secondary target organs (20-21). There is strong evidence that the clearance mechanisms used to rid the lungs of particulate matter are not as effective on nanometer sized particles, leading to a greater fraction of never-cleared particles which may enhance disease development (20). Research has demonstrated that nanometer sized particles have unique properties (22) whose adverse health impact is greater than what has been found with micrometer sized particles of the same type (23-26). The large ratio of surface area to mass compared to larger particles is believed to make nanoparticles a greater hazard. A thermistor probe has been developed to measure in situ temperature profiles underground. A full description of the probe is given. Data collected from the probe has been used to compare the actual profiles with those predicted from a finite element analysis using laboratory measured thermal properties of the different rock types. This comparison indicates the applicability of laboratory measured parameters in modeling the real conditions. Factors such as applied pressure, moisture content and anisotropy on laboratory measurements is discussed.

In our previous work, a population balance model describing the simultaneous processes of size reduction and mineral liberation has been developed. The experimental verification of this model, however, has been limited to a binary mineral system containing only one composite particle class. When considering multiple classes of composite particles, the estimation of model parameters becomes much more difficult. In the present work, a procedure for estimating model parameters for a multiple composite class model has been developed. Emphasis is placed on the direct experimental determination of these parameters. The physical significance of the breakage rate function and the liberation function in characterizing the liberation process is also discussed.

"Conventional" coal dryers really do not exist. What we really mean to say is that there are many and varied kinds of coal dryers -- and the "air handling problem" is really the only portion of it which has been approached for solution by conventional methods. It now appears that these conventional methods need supplementing by some new, relatively unconventional apparatus. In order to approach this matter with mutual understanding, here is a quick survey of the coal drying art. Figure #1 shows a McNally Pittsburgh Pulso Dryer, In the McNally Pulso Dryer, the coal is fed-onto the screen by a rotary feeder assuring even distribution of the coal. As the coal travels forward due to the action of the screen, it is subjected to a controlled pulsating flow of hot gases. T ese originate below the deck and are directed up through the moving bed of coal. Fines sifting through the deck are dried in the hopper below the screen as they fall through the hot gases to an evacuation screw. The coal remaining on the screen is dried to the desired degree when it reaches the discharge end. At this point, it is directed down into the evacuation screw to combine with the fines, or it may be discharged as a separate product. As the coal travel down the screen, it is subjected to intermittent upward currents of hot gases. These first distend the bed allowing the gases to come into intimate contact with the coal particles for rapid and efficient heat transfer. Then, as the flow of gas is cut off, the bed settles and the extreme fines sift through the screen preventing their being carried away into the exhaust system.

In 1976, a decision was made by Anamax Mining Company to install an unusual conveying system to transport ore 10.3 km (6.4 mi) from the new Eisenhower Mine to the Twin Buttes concentrator. The system, supplied by Cable Belt Limited of the United Kingdom, represents a radical departure from conventional belt conveyors. The driving tension is applied through two endless wire ropes driven by a single 2 240 kw (3 000 HP) drive while the belt acts only as the ore carrying medium. Full production was begun in January, 1979. Start-up problems hampered production for several months but were resolved by a joint Anamax-Cable Belt effort. The system has been operating at design capacity for 4-1/2 years, and has proven itself as a reliable, low cost ore transportation system.

"For the Hollywood International Airport Runway Expansion Project at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the structural fire durability analysis was completed for a series of tunnels formed by roadway and railroad cells located under the runway structure. A systematic design approach was developed to mitigate structural damage during a fire event and arrive at a practical method to structural fire engineering that is compliant to NFPA 502. To ensure the NFPA 502 requirements are satisfied, the performance based approach was implemented and the engineering analyses were performed for the adopted design fire event. The analyses considered the facility’s unique features including its fire safety systems to determine applicable design fire curves for structural durability analyses. The paper also outlines the process of defining the project specific fire curves for a specific design fire scenario and summarizes the results of heat transfer and structural fire durability analyses. This approach was aimed to assist the owner and Authority Having Jurisdiction to achieve practical decisions to the tunnel facility fireproofing.INTRODUCTIONFort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Broward County, Florida is a major hub facility serving more than 23 million passengers annually. As part of the Airport Expansion Program, the South Runway (9R-27L) Expansion project aimed to meet ever increasing service demands via an increase to runway lengths. This necessitated the placement of one of the reconstructed runways on bridge structures over the existing U.S. Route 1 (US 1), a major north–south U.S. Highway that serves the East Coast of the United States, and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, thus effectively creating multiple tunnel cells beneath the subject runway. For this project, HNTB suggested a tunnel fire damage mitigation system that would protect the runway major structural elements from the design fire event that may happen within the tunnel cells. This paper addresses the issues related to the fire event originating within the tunnel encompassing the US1 highway only, and deals with requirements of NFPA 502 [5] exclusively. Therefore, while approaching the structural fire protection issues for the specific tunnel cells beneath the runway structure, the requirements of the American National Standard NFPA 502 (Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways, 2008 edition) were followed. Well-designed and maintained haul roads are the key to minimizing truck haulage onroad hazards and costs, as well as increasing productivity. In practice, however, designing and managing a haul road for optimal performance is often difficult to achieve, especially when resources assigned to design and construction are constrained. By understanding how a road design is developed from geometric, structural, functional and maintenance considerations and, critically, the interplay between these components in design and operation, optimal performance can be achieved. This paper briefly summarizes the evolution of mine haul road design, from the seminal USBM work of Kaufman and Ault in 1977, through to current geometric, structural, functional and maintenance management design components. These augmented design and management guidelines have been developed over the past decade, both in response to the requirements of mine operators for safer and more efficient haulage systems, the truck manufacturers’ requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment and the recognition of human factors as a significant contributor to haulage accidents. While the human factor is the most problematic to address in a road design, the paper shows that the more that is known about human error, the better a road can be designed to accommodate those actions or non-standard practices that would, on a poorly designed road, invariably escalate an error into an accident.

The studies described in this paper have established that flotation conducted in a column cell provided with gas generation by aspiration into surface tension lowered water, may considerably increase the efficiency and particle size range of a flotation process. Operation of a DEISTER FLOTAIRE ® Cell at several Southwest United States flotation plants under continuous rougher, scavenger and cleaner conditions has demonstrated the main positive features to be: (a) higher capacity per unit volume than conventional flotation equipment, (b) improvement of flotation of plus 0.210 m particles, (c) improved flotation of particles minus 0.037 m.

The evolution of pit lake water quality depends on the lithology and hydrologic characteristics of the ultimate pit surface, the availability of buffering capacity in the wall rock vs. oxidizable sulfide content, the alkalinity of recharging groundwater and the evapoconcentrative characteristics of the system. This paper assesses the geochemistry of 11 existing pit lakes, ranging from the acid Red Hill and Berkeley pit lakes (pH 2.6 to 2.8) to the alkaline Yerington pit lake (pH 8.45). Predicted pit lake chemistry is similar to that in existing pits, with long-term chemistry lying on a geochemical continuum between end members that consist of influent calcium bicarbonate groundwater and naturally occurring sulfate-rich evaporate playa lakes.

Based on our finding that commercial copper chelating solvent extractants such as LIX65N® and LIX63® are excellent collectors for copper minerals, a detailed study was made using several water-soluble chelating agents belonging to the class of aromatic hydroxyoximes and having a gradual structural variation. A basic study of the system salicylaldoxime-tenorite was also carried out. Microflotation tests as a function of concentration of oxime, pH, addition of copper etc., using oxidic copper minerals such as chrysocolla and tenorite, and batch laboratory flotation tests using synthetic mixtures of quartz and oxidic copper minerals were carried out. The studies were aimed at an understanding of the collector function of the hydroxyoximes and of the general flotation behavior in these systems, in addition to studying the structural aspects of oximes vis-a-vis flotation. The results have demonstrated that all of the hydroxyoximes studied here have comparable collector property, and in all cases the oxime was found to be partitioned between the mineral surface and the copper in the bulk aqueous phase in the form of a bulk copper chelate. The occurrence of the latter could be accounted for by the formation in the bulk phase of a chelate between oxime and copper released from the mineral and/or by the detachment of the surface chelate. The role of surface and bulk chelates in flotation is discussed based on the results of partitioning of chelating agent into bulk and surface chelates in the system salicylaldoximetenorite. The effect of substitution of CH2 groups or benzene ring in the chelating agent molecule on its collector property is also discussed, in addition to the finding that only the anti-isomer has the ability to collect.

The extraction of copper from sulfate leaching liquor was investigated using Acorga M5640 commercial extractant in kerosene diluent. The effects of important factors such as the extractant concentration, contact time, liquor pH, and temperature were examined on the separation factor Cu/Fe and the extraction efficiency of copper. The results indicated that nearly 92.32% copper was extracted from the leach liquor at 10% (v/v) Acorga M5640 concentration, 1:1 aqueous/organic phase ratio, 20 min contact time, pH 2.5, and 25 °C temperature. Also, the further increase in the values determined had no positive impact on the extraction of copper. Under these conditions, the separation factor Cu/Fe was obtained about 29.64. The extraction mechanism was studied applying the plot of log(D) – 2 pH against log [extractant] and it proved the association of two moles of Acorga M5640 for the extraction of one mole of copper. McCabe–Thiele diagram was constructed and a single-step extraction process was found to obtain themaximumextraction. Additionally, thermodynamic datawere investigated and the extraction process was endothermic and non-spontaneous at 298 K (ΔH = 27.05 and ΔG = 15.52 kJ mol−1). Moreover, the loaded organic phase was stripped and 80.94% copper was recovered after 20 min using 10% sulfuric acid concentration.

Based on the relationships between severity measure vs. productivity and other factors, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of US underground coal mine injuries in 1996 by mine size. From the 1996 data, it was concluded that, generally, the larger the mine, the more productive it is (in tons per employee-hour) but the more severe is its injury experience (r = 0.65). However, within very large, large and medium mines, the more productive the mine, the less severe is its injury experience (r = -0.43, - 0.36 and -0.26, respectively). For small and very small mines, a deeply nested analysis would be required to understand relationships. Other interesting relationships and comparisons are presented.

A unique telemetry system was developed to monitor potentially unstable natural slopes above a residential area. Continuous interpretation of data transmitted from remote movement-sensitive devices and immediate communication of signficant changes to emergency personnel were made possible by a readily available "home" computer. Even though the computer based system was originally developed for a non- mining application, it could be used with little or no modification to monitor ground control instrumentation in open pit and underground situations.

Siderophyle platinum-group metals and sane gold are a thousand times more abundant in metal and chondritic meteorites than in terrestrial or lunar rocks. Type I and II carbonaceous chondrites contain granules of the high boiling point metals W, Re, Mo, Ir and Os. Metal meteorites and the metal fractions of other chondrites contain siderophyle Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh, Os, Ir and Au. Spectra of sunlight reflected from asteroids, when compared with those of meteorites and specific minerals, provide a rough classification and guide to sources of precious platin-group metals.

The zero-points-of-charge of apatite, calcite, and fluorite are pH 6.4, 10.8, and 10.0, respectively. Scheelite is negatively charged above at least pH 3. Flotation responses of these minerals in the presence of potassium oleate and sodium silicate are presented and compared with electrokinetic data. Colloidal silica appears to be the species principally responsible for calcite depression, while silicate anion is the species responsible for fluorite depression. Additions as high as 1 x 10-3 mole/liter silicate have no effect on the flotation responses of apatite and scheelite. Selective flotation of nonmetallic minerals is difficult to achieve with fatty acids or soaps by themselves. As a result, specific reagents are added to aid these separations, and one of the reagents commonly employed for this purpose is sodium silicate. Flotation separations of various calcium¬ bearing minerals such as fluorite from calcite (1,2,3) and scheelite from calcite(24) and apatite(2,5) almost always involve the use of sodium silicate, for example. The mechanisms by which sodium silicate functions as a depressant are still not understood; this fact is probably due to a number of reasons. That is, the dissolution process of sodium silicate is complex, giving rise to a number of ionic and colloidal species. (6) In addition, the type and concentration of these species depend on the ratio of Na20 to Si02, the concentration of sodium silicate, and the pH of the system. (6) At the present time, it is not known which species, colloidal silica or silicate anion, is responsible for depression. If colloidal silica is the species that is adsorbing, then adsorption must occur by electrostatic attraction between the colloid and the mineral surface. Silicate anion, on the other hand, may adsorb either physically or chemically. The objective of this paper is to determine first the active species of sodium silicate and then the conditions under which this species will adsorb and function as a depressant.

I consider it a distinct privilege to be afforded the opportunity of discussing the program of the Office of Coal Research. The principal activities I will be discussing are concerned with projects that fall in the utilization area. I will, to be sure, touch on other activities of the Office of Coal Research but am not equipped to discuss these activities in great detail. Research activities of the Office of Coal Research are conducted on a contract basis with commercial, academic, and non-profit institutions. We do not operate any laboratories of our own but we do maintain a very small staff for technical and administrative supervision of our contractors. We have consistently attempted to interest outstanding, creative, and practical research organizations in our program. We are constantly seeking the imaginative new idea that will materially reduce the cost of mining coal, transporting it, or will process it into a more convenient and useable form. In assessing proposals and in developing our program, we search for the improvements that will develop large-scale new uses for coal or coal products or those that support these new uses.

The rare magnesium-lithium clay mineral hectorite occurs at many places in the McDermitt caldera of Nevada-Oregon. Commercial development of several high purity deposits began in 1986. The hectorite was precipitated in a lake environment formed after collapse of the McDermitt caldera. Hectorite beds and lenses are associated with volcaniclastic sediments, limestones, dolomites, zeolites and locally sandy bentonites. The high purity deposits appear to be associated with hydrothermal areas. The hectorite consists of extremely small flake-shaped crystals, and Ca is the predominant exchangeable ion. Its color ranges from white to light green. Commercial uses developed to date include high brightness magnesium aluminum silicate products, organophilic clays, pulp retention, and ceramics. The MAS is used as a suspending agent, binder, stabilizer and thixotrope in aqueous solutions for cosmetics, household cleaners, pharmaceuticals and miscellaneous industrial applications. Organoclays are used in printing inks and paints.
