INTRODUCTION In a discussion of South American exploration, it is difficult to know how much area to cover, as there has been such intense exploration for many years in all of the South American countries. Therefore, I have decided to discuss only Argentina, Bolivia and Peru in this paper, since I am most familiar with these three countries. This familiarity has been gained during my last 12 years of nearly continual exploration and mine development. Furthermore, these three countries form a contiguous block straddling the Andes Mountain chain for 2,200 miles in length N-S. Although Chile is part of this block, I excluded that country because it has had the longest recent history in South American exploration, and it is now in a mature stage where new important mines are being placed in production every year. Exploration must progress a lot for the other three countries to attain the stature of Chile. However, major exploration successes such as Yavacocha and Pieriva in Peru, Kori Khollu in Bolivia and Bajo Alumbrera, Agua Rica and Cerro Vanguardia in Argentina certainly indicates that these countries are rapidly accelerating in exploration successes and the resulting new mine developments. Also, by concentrating on three countries, I have avoided making this paper too lengthy. This paper will cover activities of both junior and senior mining companies, both of whom are making significant contributions to exploration. The junior companies often make the initial discovery, develop it further and then bring in a major company when large capital is required. Since most exploration is for gold and copper or combinations of these, most descriptions will cover these types. However, there are significant new exploration successes for zinc and for silver-lead-zinc, and they will be covered, as well. After descriptions of the various properties, there is included a discussion of the governmental policies of Argentina, Bolivia and Peru, as to how they are affecting exploration activities and budgets. Some of these problems could have a major negative affect on the future exploration plans of many companies. I have intended to cover what I think are significant exploration developments in each country, and if a company project is omitted, there was no intention to slight anyone. For more than 35 years Lurgi has been providing its fluid bed roasters on a world­wide basis. The current total annual capaci­ty of the 250 Lurgi roasters approaches 26 million mt of sulphide minerals, including gold-bearing flotation pyrite concentrates. While the stationary fluid bed has been uti­lized for roasting exclusively, Lurgi has now commercially introduced its Circulating Fluid Bed (CFB) technology for gold roasting in a successful effort to maximize gold re­covery.

Seismic geophysical methods have long been used by geologists and geophysicists to delineate subsurface features. These techniques work because different types and strengths of soil and rock transmit energy at different velocities. The Crosshole-Downhole tests (CH-DH) and seismic refraction survey (RS) are among the most used methods in engineering applications to obtain the elastic properties of subsurface layers. As a result, seismic methods have evolved into a cost-effective tool for rapidly determining depth to bedrock in engineering and construction projects. The seismic methods are best suited to sediment thickness analysis, bedrock quality determination and detection of the presence of weaknesses in the bedrock before the erection of any civil engineering structures such as bridges, tunnels, dams and portals. Seismic methods are also useful in estimating the rippability of bedrock ahead of construction. These methods are particularly useful for large-scale projects that require a significant number of drill holes, resulting in a substantial investment of time and costs for drilling. The CH-DH and RS methods are typically comparable in total cost to drilling, but provide significantly more information in 2-D and 3-D and therefore reduce the likelihood of conceptually oversimplifying the subsurface conditions. The above mentioned methodologies were considered to be the most appropriate geophysical methods for investigating the shallow structure and the dynamic soil properties of the area where the Ilarionas Dam is scheduled to be constructed. The main target of this work was to prove the potential of geophysical methods in providing accurate information to the civil engineer and to obtain information on the dynamic soil and rock properties for earthquake design analyses for the dam construction. Specifically, nine refraction seismic profiles and three cross-hole-downhole seismic tests were implemented to determine the subsurface conditions of the study area. The tests determined the shear and compression wave velocity profiles versus depth and other crucial parameters such as Young and Rigidity modules. Furthermore, they allowed the detailed 2-D mapping (along several profiles of the study area) of the subsurface variation of the soil and rock dynamic moduli.

The Gulf Coast, from New Orleans, Louisiana to Brownsville, Texas, is one of the largest high energy consuming areas in the United States. This region has areas of very high industrial density. The lower Mississippi River from Baton Rouge past New Orleans has a high industrial density. Lake Charles, Louisiana, the Orange-Beaumont-Port Arthur area, Houston (4 separate areas) and Corpus Christi all have the same high industrial density. This situation developed due to good transportation, good labor conditions, good weather and the abundance of cheap energy-gas and electricity. Obviously the latter had the greatest impact. The availability of cheap natural gas made Gulf Coast sites very attractive to energy intensive industry such as metals and petro-chemicals. The area was also very attractive to refinery development due to the large supply (endless?) of crude oil available. As we all know, the energy situation has changed dramatically in the last five years. The cost of a MMBTU has risen from the 17¢ to 19¢ level to a price of $1.95 to $2.10. The price of interstate gas, as defined by the National Energy Plan recently passed by Congress, was approximately $1.98/MMBTU escalated to October, 1978. It goes without saying, that this has had a major impact on doing business in the Gulf Coast. As fuel prices soared, different companies responded in different ways; but overall, industrial energy consumption along the coast was reduced 20% to 25% from 1974 to 1975. Since 1975 production and energy use has been increasing, however, production at some plants is still significantly below plant capacity.

Continuous thickeners can be sized either from previous experience, continuous pilot-scale test results, or from batch settling tests. Although it is a relatively simple process to size full-scale thickeners when previous experience or pilot-scale operating data are available, batch testing is often the only realistic method for sizing thickeners due to time restrictions, budget limitations and availability of sample material. Many authors have, therefore, suggested means of running batch tests and analyzing the resulting data. Fundamental thickening theory had its beginning with the work o£ Coe and Clevenger(1). In order to determine the size of the thickener settling area, they proposed that a series of batch settling tests be run at various initial concentrations. The solids handling capacity at each concentration can then be determined and the lowest capacity (maximum area requirements) used to size the thickener. Kynch(2) developed a mathematical analysis in which the relationship between solids concentration and settling rate can be obtained from a single batch settling curve. Talmage and Fitch(3), Yoshioka(4)(5) and Dick(6), have enlarged upon these works to give a basis for methods of sizing thickeners.

"Organic smoothing additives are used to produce dense, thick, high-quality cathodes in copper electrowinning. Glue had been used traditionally and is still used in operations that do not employ solvent extraction to produce the electrowinning electrolyte. With the advent of solvent extraction–electrowinning, guar started to be used and remained in use for many years as it does not affect the phase disengagement in solvent extraction. Recently, however, guar has been replaced by less-expensive saccharide- and polyacrylamide-based additives. This paper is the first of a series of four papers that examine saccharides and polyacrylamides as new additives for copper electrowinning. A review of previous research related to copper electrowinning additives is presented here, along with a selected review of additives in other copper electrodeposition systems.IntroductionThe recovery of copper from solution by electrowinning was first practiced in the early 1900s, but it was the combination of solvent extraction with electrowinning (SX-EW) in March 1968 at the Ranchers Bluebird Mine (Kordosky, 1992) that changed the landscape for the electrowinning process. Most copper electrowinning capacity is now associated with solvent extraction, though some copper is still won directly from leach solutions (Robinson et al., 2013). The ability to produce high-purity copper cathodes from SX-EW has taken the continued improvement of SX-EW technology over the past more than 40 years.One of the technologies that has seen improvement is that of the organic smoothing agents used during the electrodeposition of copper in the tankhouse. These organic additives are added to the acidic copper sulfate electrolyte during electrowinning to improve the smoothness, brightness and density of the copper cathodes. The organic additives that are presently in use are different from those used in 1999 (Jenkins et al., 1999). Over the past decade, many tankhouses have replaced the use of guar-based organic additives with those derived from other saccharides. Until now, there has been no comprehensive publication in the open literature on the behavior of these additives during copper electrowinning."

Stillwater Mining Company is developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine approximately 21 km (13 miles) west of their existing Nye operation in south central Montana. A 5650 meter (18,550-foot) tunnel is required to gain access to the ore bearing horizon (J-M Reef). Access and primary mine development can be accelerated through the use of two 4.6 meter (15-foot) diameter tunnel boring machines (TBM). One TBM was purchased new while the other was purchased used. Machine specifications, site support facilities, portal/launch chamber construction, TBM assembly, startup and operation are discussed in this paper.

Never known as a conference to shy away from its share of off-color jokes, the Colorado Mineral Processing Division?s Annual Meeting returned to the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, CO April 26-28 for its 62nd edition, this one held under the theme ?Does size matter (is bigger always better).? With the predictable jokes sprinkled in here and there, and a few unpredictable ones as well, the three-day conference featured a healthy mix of talks about some of the latest technical developments in the field of mineral processing, as well as insightful looks at some new operations in the western United States. This year, the Colorado MPD also launched the Wagner Equipment Student Scholarship program.

Industrial minerals are critical to most aspects of modern society. They are pervasive in both industry and in everyone's lives (McVey, 1989; Barsotti, 1993). They are also the dominant class of minerals produced in the United States but this fact is little known outside the industry. For example, in 1993 (U.S. Bureau of Mines, 1995, table 1) industrial mineral dollar value was double that of metals ($20.86 billion vs. $10.88 billion) and employment levels were nearly so (74,000 vs. 40,000). A further difference is that transportation tends to dominate production costs (FOB end user) whereas they are much less significant in other mining ventures or other industries. Finally, metal mines are more concentrated west of the Mississippi; industrial mineral operations are more prevalent to the east (U.S. Bureau of Mines, 1995, p. 16-17). The significance of transport cost is discussed in Part 2, which is essentially Barker and Austin, 1995. Part 1 will update and expand portions of Barker and Austin (1995) and provide a more detailed discussion of import/export relationships using a China/United States reference point because of China's dramatic influence on some industrial mineral markets since the mid-1980s (barite, etc.).

INTRODUCTION At some point in the design and development stage of a mineral venture, the assay laboratory building, its interior layout, and major pieces of analytical equipment must be specified for construction or purchase. Even the most experienced chemist would have difficulty in proposing useful specifications without a good deal of investigation into the kinds of analytical tasks that the laboratory will be expected to address, the probable workload, and the operating time constraints. This chapter will provide a logical approach to laboratory design that starts with such an investigation. Specific examples throughout the chapter are drawn from the author's tenure as Chief Chemist at Barrick Mercur Gold Mines, Mercur, Utah, from 1982 to 1985. It is necessary to understand the nature of a modern production laboratory, and to recognize that its operations bear more resemblance to its parent processing plant than to a research, teaching, or custom analytical laboratory. The assay lab is a processing facility unto itself, where samples and reagents are the raw materials, and assay results are the final product. Its most efficient operating mode is as an assembly line, treating samples in a nearly continuous flow. Nevertheless , there are important differences between the lab and the process plant. The products - assays - are individually unknown quantities until they are "produced.' This can vastly complicate quality control compared to the process plant. Capital costs are general 1 y small compared to the plant, but the ratio of operating costs to capital costs for a laboratory is often very much higher than for the plant. This is due to the labor intensive nature of analytical work. For instance, during Fiscal Year 1984 at Barrick Mercur Gold Mines, labor costs for the laboratory staff represented about five percent of the total labor budget, while the laboratory building and equipment represented only about six-tenths of one percent of the original start-up capital. Failure to recognize both the similarities and differences between laboratory and plant operations is the foremost cause of difficulty encountered in designing a laboratory. The

"Controlling float coal dust in underground coal mines before dispersal into the general airstream can reduce the risk of mine explosions while potentially achieving a more efficient and effective use of rock dust. A prototype, flooded-bed scrubber was evaluated for float coal dust control in the return of a continuous miner section. The scrubber was installed in line between the ventilation tubing and an exhausting auxiliary fan. Airborne and deposited dust mass measurements were collected over a period of three days at set distances from the fan exhaust to assess the changes in float coal dust levels in the return due to the operation of the scrubber. Mass-based measurements were collected on a per-cut basis and were normalized per foot of advance by the continuous miner. Results show that average float coal dust levels measured under baseline conditions were reduced by over 91% when operating the scrubber. INTRODUCTION In 2012, underground mining in the United States produced over 342 million tons of coal [EIA 2013]. During the cutting, crushing, and transport of this coal, dust is generated and can be entrained in the air ventilating the mine. Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 75.400-1 (30 CFR§ 75.400-1) defines float coal dust as particles of coal that can pass a No. 200 sieve. These coal particles can be carried by the ventilating air into return entries before settling onto mine surfaces [NIOSH 2006]. If this float coal dust becomes re-entrained into the airstream, it can propagate an explosion throughout mine workings [Harris et al. 2010]. Application of rock dust in underground coal mines is required by Federal regulation as a means of preventing the propagation of explosions by float coal dust. In order to meet Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 75.403 (30 CFR § 75.403), 80% incombustible content must be maintained in the composition of dust deposited in mine entries [76 Fed. Reg. 35968 (2011)]. This fraction of incombustible content is increased if elevated levels of methane are present. In order to maintain the required incombustible content, frequent or constant application of rock dust is undertaken by mine operators. Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 75.2 (30 CFR § 75.2) defines the properties of the rock dust that must be used by mine operators."

Historically, there have been many occurrences ofmine fires and explosions recorded in the United States and other countries that have demonstrated the existence of explosivemethane–airmixtures, herein referred to as explosive gas zones (EGZs). The risk of mine explosions can increase if the EGZs migrate out from the gob into the surrounding mine entries. Fluctuating barometric pressure is the common cause for EGZs outflowing or outgassing from the gob. Numerical analysis using a 3D computational fluid dynamics method was developed to fully understand the outgassing phenomenon. A number of simulations using various magnitudes and periods of barometric pressure changes indicated that the EGZ outgassing potentially occurs due to lags in pressure, which are strongly influenced by mine conditions and ventilation systems. An early warning system with a real-time pressure monitoring and the application of gob ventilation boreholes are recommended to detect and mitigate explosion hazards from gob outgassing.

The existing methods for recycling lithium-ion batteries present initial hurdles related to the safe handling and preparation of the batteries to avert potential explosions. Submerging batteries in sodium chloride (NaCl) solution has become an acceptable industrial practice. However, the use of NaCl to discharge lithium-ion batteries rusts the batteries’ cases and releases metals which impacts the downstream processes that involve selective recovery of Li. This study aimed to determine the optimal concentrations and pH range of NaCl for the discharge of lithium-ion batteries for the purpose of minimizing the leach of Al, Co, Cu, Fe, Li, and Ni.

Retreat mining, using yielding steel friction props, over a seven-year period has been successful at a uranium mine operated by Hecla Mining Company in southeast Utah. The support system allow good roof control, maximum profit, complete extraction, and good ventilation. Unusual subsidence observations were made in that some of the surface was raised rather than lowered, Longwall mining, commonly practiced in European coal mines, has a potential of broader application because of mechanization possibilities and better roof control and ventilation at greater depths.

The study investigates the influence of water migration on the fluidity of fresh cemented paste backfill (CPB) with and without flocculant under variable shear rates. The research utilizes nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), rheological tests, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to analyze water migration, rheological properties, and microstructure evolution. The findings reveal that water migrates to more stable states as shear rate increases, and the addition of flocculant enhances water migration and increases shear stress and apparent viscosity. The study establishes relationships between water content and rheological parameters, providing insights into the flow characteristics of fresh CPB for pipeline transportation.

"A walk through the exhibit hall or a glance at the technical programing that was offered at the 2019 SME Annual Conference & Expo and CMA 121st National Western Mining Conference in Denver, CO, Feb. 24-27 makes it evident that the mining industry is an innovative one that is on the cutting edge of technology. However, a glance at the nearly 6,700 attendees of the conference and it is also evident that while the industry is moving forward at a rapid pace in some areas, it is lagging behind in terms of diversity, both in gender and ethnicity.At Monday morning’s keynote session, Hannah Ubi, a millennial and a public speaker who joked that she is the proud owner of a sixth-place swimming trophy and a number of participation medals, addressed a full house that consisted of many men with gray hair or balding heads. The issue of an aging workforce that is rapidly being depleted by retirements is not a new one for the mining industry. In fact, it has been a concern for the industry for more than a decade. The central question has long been, “when the current senior-level people begin to retire, how do we replace them, and how do we fill the knowledge gap that is walking off into the sunset?” SME has been on the front lines in searching for solutions to the impending problem and, along with industry partners, has worked hard to develop programs that will address these issues. Among other efforts, the Society has developed a Ph.D. fellowship program to encourage people to remain in academia to teach the next generation and to help train the next generation to take over in the private sector.“The SME Foundation’s Ph.D. and Career Development Grant program is exceeding expectations at this point with two Ph.D. students graduating and taking a position in academia and two professors achieving tenure,” SME Executive Director Dave Kanagy said during the conference.The Society’s Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) has done its part to help educate future generations about the mining industry with initiatives like EngineerGirl, the Boy Scout Merit Badge and Move Mining, the Shark-Tank-style competition that was held on Monday with five finalists competing for the top prize (ME, April 2019, page 53)."

INTRODUCTION Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Tintic Div. Burgin mine is a 725 t/d (800 stpd) lead-zinc producer, located in the east Tintic mining district, 5.6 km (3.5 miles) east of Eureka, and 130 km (80 miles) south of Salt Lake City, UT. The Burgin mining complex includes three shafts, shop, dry, and office facilities, and a 454 t/d (500 stpd) flotation concentrator. Production and ser¬vice entry to the mine is through a 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft, and a three-compart¬ment rectangular shaft. A connection with the Apex No. 2 shaft and the Burgin mine provides a second exhaust airway. Bear Creek Mining Co., Kennecott's exploration sub¬sidiary, began exploration of the Burgin mine area in 1957 with the sinking of the 335 m (1100 ft) deep No. 1 shaft. A station was cut at the 320-m (1050-ft) level of the shaft and extensive drifting, diamond drilling, and some winzing and raising confirmed the presence of a major lead-zinc ore body, the main portion of which oc¬curred below a hot saline water table. Surface facilities and the 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft were completed in 1966. Ore production has been steadily increased to 725 t/ d (800 stpd) since 1966. The collar elevation of the No. 2 production shaft is 1731 m (5678 ft) above sea level. The mine's three levels, the 1050, 1200, and 1300 are at elevations of 1414.6, 1356.4, and 1338.1 m (4587, 4450, and 4390 ft), respectively. The approximate elevation of the hot saline water table is 1382.6 m (4536 ft). The earliest production on the east Tintic mining district was from the Eureka Lilly mine in 1909. Later, in 1916, the Tintic Standard mine was discovered, and pro¬duced ores with a gross value of $80,000,000 through 1956. The Eureka Standard mine located 1.6 km (1 mile) southwest of the Burgin mine produced ore worth $12,000,000 from fissures in the Tintic quartzite along the Eureka Standard fault. Ores produced from the east Tintic mining district through 1971 are valued at $151.3 million. The production from the entire Tintic district is approximately $500 million. GEOLOGY The Burgin ore deposit occurs as replacement bodies in limestone, dolomite, and shale. Numerous fault struc¬tures and rock formations make the mine geology com¬plex. The mineralization is strongly associated with sev¬eral major geological features, which include the Ophir formation, consisting of limestone, dolomite, and shale as the favorable host rock, and the structural influence of the east Tintic thrust, the Eureka Standard and sev¬eral other significant faults. Fig. 1 depicts the Burgin 1300 level workings, a generalized configuration of the ore body, and the main geological features. Covering the quartzite, limestone, dolomite, and shale facies enclosing the Burgin ore deposit are 183 to 274 m (600 to 900 ft) of andesite. The Burgin ore consists of massive sulfide and oxide lead-zinc ores with significant silver and cadmium val¬ues. The main ore minerals are galena, cerrusite, and spalerite. Considerable attention has been given to the restoration of low-level radioactive (<1000 pCl/g) sites contaminated during the early years of the atomic energy program. Current clean-up activities which involve the relocation of contaminated soils to licensed disposal sites have been shown to be very costly due to the large volumes of soils which must be excavated, transported and stored. Recent characterization studies conducted at Virginia Tech suggest that the volume of soil requiring disposal can be greatly reduced using mineral processing techniques such as classification, density separation and froth flotation. This article discusses the application of these technologies for soil remediation and describes a conceptual flowsheet for treating soil samples from two contaminated sites.

During 1960, the controversy over percentage depletion reached the level of debate between presidential candidates. Nixon took the position that he would not tamper with the status quo in this matter. Kennedy took the position that he was willing to take a fresh look at the issues involved. Kennedy&apos;s position appears to have been based upon two premises: (1) new sources of federal revenue may be needed; and (2) current depletion rates, even if sound in principle, may be too high and, therefore, inequitable. The latter premise constitutes the basis for the claims that depletion allowances are simply "loopholes" of tax avoidance. Very probably the controversy over percentage depletion will remain in the political limelight during most of the coming decade. It is quite possible that the current depletion rates, at least those for oil and gas, will be reduced during this period. The aim of this paper is to isolate the complex causes of this mounting opposition to percentage depletion.
