Noranda's Grey Eagle Mine and Mill, located in the Siskiyou Mountains of Northern California, began shakedown operations in the late fall and early winter of 1982. This paper describes some of the unique features in mining, milling and water treatment operation at Grey Eagle. In addition, major start-up problems in the mill and water treatment plant are discussed along with measures taken to correct these problems.

The preparation of graduate talent for the mining industry is a challenging process, given the multifaceted and complex array of decisions mining engineers make in discharging their responsibilities. As leaders, mining engineers must manage operations, lead project teams, mentor junior engineers, chart the technological directions of companies and deal with several organizations for maintaining the technical and economic feasibility of operations within strategic and tactical framework. Traditionally, the completion of the bachelor of science degree curriculum, with a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA), has been used as a graduation measure by Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T). Companies have long realized the limitations of the CGPA for recruiting graduates because mining engineering is an applied engineering discipline. Company recruiters have sought to correct the limitations by factoring experience and behaviors into the selection process when recruiting knowledgeable and well-rounded graduates. In this paper, the authors introduce a new metric, which combines the current CGPA (knowledge) with experience and attribute (KEA) metrics to gauge the job readiness of graduating engineers. The KEA metric, also called the job-readiness factor (JRF), is the sum of K (50%), E (30%) and A (20%). The KEA process has been applied to a graduating class in Missouri S&T to demonstrate the value of the new metric system. The results show a fairly positive correlation between CGPA and the KEA metric, with a coefficient of determination of about 70%. Overall, the KEA metric system provides a better picture of the capacity and job readiness of graduates entering the workforce.

Whisker growth during the reduction of iron ores The phenomenon of whisker growth can be observed in a number of solid-state crystallisation reactions, which, apparently, appear in6 the first instance as though they are two independent processes. From such reactions, one can find the whisker type of crystallisation on solid bodies. These examples show, that the whisker growth is neither due to certain crystal forms with predetermined temperature and pressureranges, nor to parameters, which, ad hoc, are necessary for the crystallisation. In all cases the whisker formation seems to depend on nucleation and the availability of crystallizing material in direct environment of such a nucleus, under given parameters of a system. One can generally state, that the research of whisker growth with the aim of establishing proper physical laws, to determine the foundamentals of whisker formation and whisker growth, is at present under active study. We can conclude that, although a great number of hypothesis have been proposed; no concluding theory has yet been arrived at. In the institute for ferrous metallurgy of the technical university of Aachen, research works are undertaken to find an explination to various metallurgical phenomena through help of whisker growth which was observed under varying conditions of iron ore reduction. This was possible by using refined microscopic techniques through which the whisker growth on solid oxyde substrates is detected. This refined technique combines the latest methods of surface examination with the help of stereo-scan-electron-microscope and proper and carefull preparation of surface to be stereo-scanned.

Bauxite residue (red mud) is an alkaline waste derived from the industrial process for extraction of alumina from bauxite ore. Some bauxite residues contain considerable concentrations of critical metals, for example, rare earth elements. Lithium in red mud was also reported as a potential resource. In the current study, a Li-rich red mud was leached using acetic acid to investigate the leaching behavior of lithium followed by neutralizing with hydrochloric or oxalic acid. By neutralizing red mud using diluted hydrochloric acid (0.01 mol/L), 58.04–60.27% of lithium was leached using 25% acetic acid at 95 °C for 60 min. In the meantime, more than 95% of sodium and 85% of calcium were also dissolved in the leachate solution. While oxalic acid (0.5 mol/L) was used to neutralize red mud prior to acetic acid leaching, lithium performed lower leaching efficiencies (42.41–46.88%) in comparison of using of hydrochloric acid–neutralized red mud. Nevertheless, these leaching efficiencies of lithium were close to that of calcium and much higher than those of sodium under the condition. In this study, 25% (v/v) of acetic acid, at 85 °C for 60 min, was demonstrated as optimum conditions for lithium extraction from oxalic acid–neutralized red mud using acetic acid. The results would be useful and of interest for lithium recovery and purification from red mud.

The Doan Valley Storage Tunnel Project in Cleveland Ohio was constructed to control Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs). It is a complex system of three tunnels ranging from 8.5 to 18 feet in diameter with a total length of about 2.3 miles that was put into operation in mid-2021. The project lies within and below the cultural, educational, and medical hub of Cleveland, which presented unique design and construction challenges. This paper provides a case history of the design and construction, with particular attention given to lessons learned in devising a large tunnel system that can carry both dry and wet weather flows constructed in rock with limited cover, within a flood plain area and vibrant urban center

New and developing communication systems en-able underground miners to, not only connect to the surface from an increased communication coverage area, but also to be discovered in the event of an emergency. Communication and tracking systems are required by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Ad-ministration (MSHA) regulations, aiming to enhance health and safety and routine production in underground operations. Modeling a mine?s potential communication coverage area will increase overall coverage and efficiency of the communication network itself. Modeling the propagation of wireless communications enables ideal broadcast locations to be found when designing a communications network. Strategic placement of broad-cast devices results in a reliable communication network that can better withstand disruption in daily operation and during a time of emergencies. Research on wireless communication in mines has been ongoing since 1922, when the U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments in its experimental mine in Bruceton, PA (Schiffbauer & Brune, 2006a). Ac cording to Dobroski and Stolarczyk (1982), ?as early as 1922, Bureau of Mines experiments showed that radio propagation in mines was possible but not practical.? In 2006, the underground communication technologies available to the mining industry had inherent problems that limited communication capabilities. Because harsh underground mine environments significantly reduce line of sight and propagation range and introduce power and safety concerns, the overall effectiveness of underground communication technologies were limited. The Stibnite Project is an open pit/cyanide heap leach gold property located in the Yellow Pine mining district of central Idaho. The gold ore is in an oxidized zone of an epithermal deposit which is associated with a fault system related to Tertiary igneous activity of the region. The faults transect a roof pendant of metamorphosed sediments within crystalline rocks of the Idaho Batholith. Seasonal mining is at a rate of 3900 mt/d (4300 st/d) of ore with a 2:l waste to ore ratio. Gold and silver are recovered through a process of cyanidation, carbon adsorption and desorption, and electrowinning. Disposal of the leached ore requires chlorination of the residual cyanide.

Measurements of the electrophoretic mobility of bastnaesite in aqueous solutions of sodium nitrate reveal that the isoelectric point (iep) of this cerium fluocarbonate occurs at about pH 9.3. These results also indicate that the pH affects significantly the electrophoretic mobility of bastnaesite, which becomes more positive as the pH decreases and more negative as the pH increases from the iep. Computations of solid-solution equilibria for the bastnaesite-H2O system closed to the atmosphere as a function of pH indicate that cerium fluoride precipitates in acidic solutions, whereas cerium hydroxide precipitates in alkaline solutions. When the initial amount of bastnaesite is fixed at 0.05 wt.% (the solids concentration used for electrokinetic experiments), these computations reveal that bastnaesite is the only solid phase in the pH range from 5.75 to 8.55, it coexists with CeF3(s) between pH 5.22 and pH 5.74, and with Ce(OH)3(s) between pH 8.56 and pH 10.12. Cerium fluoride and cerium hydroxide are the only solid phase below pH 5.2 and above pH 10.2, respectively. According to these computations, the dissolution-precipitation processes that occur when bastnaesite is equilibrated in aqueous solutions at different pH values determine the solid phases present in the system. In turn, these processes must affect the electrokinetic potential at the solid-solution interface, and they must be considered for explaining electrokinetic measurements as a function of pH when bastnaesite is the original solid phase in aqueous suspensions.

Many of the problems that occur in the preparation plant originate from practices in the mine. Impurities in raw coal can be in the seam itself or from extraneous material taken in mining from the roof or bottom. In the case of underground mines, the choice of mining equipment will affect the size consist and the amount of extraneous material included with the coal. Also, governmental regulations concerning the degree of rock dusting, gobbing underground, and cleanup have increased the dirt in raw coal. Sulfur dioxide emission standards, on the other hand, are pressuring the coal industry to clean coal more thoroughly. Coal supplied for coking purposes is nearly all upgraded by washing, while for the largest market, electric power generation, a high proportion is shipped as a raw product with processing, in whole or in part, only necessary when excess impurities are mined with the coal. This chapter will deal primarily with plants that process or wash coal to some extent (Fig. 1) and only incidentally with mines shipping raw run-of-mine coal crushed to a top size of, usually, 51 to 102 mm (2 to 4 in.), with little, if any, other treatment.

The Green Mountain Copper Prospect is an unusual stratiform base metal occurrence located in the California Foothills Copper-Zinc Belt. Mined for rich secondary oxide-carbonate ores since 1863, the first serious exploration of the primary ores was in the 1970's. Unlike typical volcanogenic deposits of the district, stratigraphy consists of greywackes overlain (?) or intruded by an intermediate to felsic volcanic unit. Shales and siltstones overlie the volcanic unit. Massive pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur at the top of the volcanic unit. Later intrusion and deformation metamorphosed the sequence and created a SW plunging anticline. Characteristic magnetic and electrical geophysical signatures are present and reviewed.

There is an indication that high-pressure roller milling promotes selective liberation due to preferential breakage along the mineral boundaries. A study was undertaken to compare the degree of liberation obtained by high-pressure roller milling with that of conventional ball milling. Coals with different HGI's were ground in a high-pressure roller mill and a ball mill to produce products with similar size distributions. The products were then subjected to float-sink separations to determine the degree of liberation. Also, the relative cleanabilities were compared by separating the ground products by froth flotation. The results from this study are presented in the paper.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) involves a wide range of practices, from highly informal and minimally mechanized mining operations with predominantly manual work to formal practices carried out by small but high-tech industrial mining operations [1]. ASM may be a traditional practice, with skills passed from one generation to another. It can be an important driver of local economic development, while simultaneously contributing to a complex array of positive and negative socioeconomic and environmental impacts. There are more than 100 million artisanal and small-scale miners in 80 countries worldwide, and they supply around 20% of the worldwide gold production [2]. According to the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mining (MINEM), in 2020, 32% of fatal accidents in formal (legal) Peruvian mining operations were caused by groundfall events [3].The lack of resources, knowledge of best practices in health and safety, and insufficient equipment used in ASM make the probability of suffering work accidents very high. Furthermore, groundfall is one of the main causes of accidents and injuries in underground mines around the world [4], and it is also a concerning problem in ASM, where the associated fatality rate is similarly high. Unfortunately, a proper record of accidents in ASM is not kept, so an estimate of the actual number of groundfall accidents cannot be accurately developed [5]. Currently miners rely on empirical and observational tools acquired through previous experience to assess groundfall risks. The risks for artisanal miners can tend to be significantly greater than risks for those from the mining industry. This is due to the lack of regulation of ASM, which tends to operate outside the legal framework and the regulations lack of enforcement in force for occupational health and safety regulations.

The current 120 psi seal design and evaluation practices are mostly based on simple analytical solutions. Considering the simplistic assumptions and limitations involved in simple analytical solutions and practical difficulties involved in conducting conventional full-scale explosion tests for evaluating 120 psi seal designs, there is a need for developing new scientific methods and engineering practices for design, analysis and evaluation of mine seals.

This paper is one of a series of presentations organized by the Conference of American Society of Civil Engineers with the goal of making significant progress toward an equitable and effective allocation of risks in construction undertakings among the principal parties - owner, contractor and designer. The role I have been assigned is principally one of identification of risk while others will devote greater attention to the allocation of these risks and the contractual arrangements necessary to properly make these allocations. Construction projects are joint undertakings by parties who bring different skills and interests toward a common effort, much as this conference does. A project is not an adversary proceeding and does not benefit from establishment of an adversary mode, as our lawyer friends seek in the resolution of legal issues. Accordingly, I urge upon this Conference the adoption of two basic precepts and guidelines as the criteria for sharing of the risks inherent in construction undertakings toward achievement through mutual effort the common goal of a successful project completed in the shortest time and at the least overall cost. These precepts are: (1) that all risks are rightfully the owners unless transferred to or assumed by another party for a fair compensation; and (2) that the principle guideline in determining whether a risk should be so transferred should be whether the receiving party has both the competence to fairly assess the risk and the expertise necessary to control or minimize it. The sponsors of the conference have provided certain guidelines to the authors. There is, however, no constraint in expressing one's bias and I suspect that my contractor's outlook may be inherent in my comments. The guidelines have suggested that I indicate whether the risks identified are ones that can or should be shared or borne by one party alone. In doing so, I will attempt to follow the precepts I have recommended.

Introduction Metallurgical accounting practices have been revolutionized over the past 15 years by the introduction of low cost personal computers and easy- to-use spreadsheet software. The Chimney Creek metallurgical accounting system takes full advantage of these advances. Data is provided by a PLC-based process control system, IBM data logging, operator logsheets and assay results from an automatatic plant sampling system. The data is organized and stored in an IBM PS/2 system using Lotus 123 and customized accounting programs to provide a comprehensive information management system. Metallurgical accounting for gold plants should ideally provide information for the following: a) Gold production accounting b) Day-to-day process control and operation c) Metallurgical evaluation and process optimization The Chimney Creek system provides all of these while overcoming specific accounting problems presented by SAG milling a coarse feed, grinding in cyanide and dump leaching run-of-mine material. Process description Gold Fields' Chimney Creek mine is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. Ore is processed by a combination of dump leaching and milling processes. The dump leach operation treats approximately 2.0 million tons per year of low grade ore (0.030 oz/ton). Run-of-mine ore is top dumped in 40 foot high pads. The use of three solution ponds for leaching enables an intermediate solution to be recirculated to the leach pad to reduce the pregnant solution flowrate and increase gold tenor of solution to the carbon-in-column (CIC) recovery circuit. Gold recovery is approximately 65% by this method. The milling process employs a SAG mill-ball mill grinding circuit to treat 900,000 tons per year at an average grade of 0.19 oz/ton. The ore is crushed to minus 12" in a jaw crusher prior to feeding the SAG mill. Cyanide is added to the grinding circuit to start gold dissolution as early as possible. After grinding, leaching of the ore is continued in a unique two-stage counter current decantation circuit 1 with 12 hours of leaching between stages . 85% of the soluble gold is recovered from the first stage thickener overflow in carbon columns (CIC). The second stage underflow is treated in a scavenger carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant. Ultimate gold recovery is over 95%. Loaded carbon from both the dump leaching and milling processes is pressure stripped by hot cyanide solution and gold is recovered from the resulting solution by zinc precipitation. The precipitate is retorted for mercury removal and smelted into bullion. The plant flowsheet appears in Figure 1. Data collection Data for daily metallurgical accounting is obtained from three sources: a) Plant sampling b) Process control system c) Operator logsheets All of the data collection for metallurgical accounting is based around the 12-hour shift operating schedule. Sampling All critical sampling for gold production accounting is performed by automatic samplers (Figure 2). Heath & Sherwood two-stage sampling systems are used for sampling all slurry streams (cyclone overflow, CIP feed and CIP tails). The automatic sampler consists of a pneumatically operated primary sample cutter and a continuous rotary secondary splitter. The cyclone overflow and CIP tails are the most critical samples since these are used to calculate gold into and out of the plant on a shiftly basis. The CIP feed sample gives additional information concerning intermediate dissolution and recovery

The mine manager in today's environment is faced with a wide variety of problems and challenges which must be addressed if efficient and profitable operations are to be achieved. Expansion of operations has, in many instances, resulted in inexperienced work crews, face supervisors, and superintendents. The complexities of a mining system preclude rapid movement through the learning curve for moat personnel. The management of production suffers both from this inexperience and the lack of standard procedures and methods for planning, schedul ing and analyzing production systems. The lack of visibility of information, as well as of the operations themselves, due to their remoteness, adds to the problem of production management.

The Mission mine, located in southern Arizona near Tucson, is a recently developed open pit which produces 15,000 tons per day of copper ore. The mine lies on a wide and gently sloping bajada sweeping northeasterly from the Sierrita mountains. It derives its name from the nearby Mission San Xavier del Bac, built circa 1700. The ore body is everywhere covered by about 200 feet of alluvium, as are the adjacent Pima and Palo Verde mines. The geology of the Mission deposit is known principally through the study of diamond drill holes spaced 150 to 300 feet apart. The open pit is in an infant stage and has not yet revealed much of the deposit, although information obtained there by the operating staff, and from a few thousand feet of exploratory underground workings, has added significantly to the general fund of knowledge. Permission to publish was granted by the American Smelting and Refining Company. I am indebted to Kenyon Richard and J. H. Courtright for criticism of this paper and for their direction during the several years in which I studied the Mission deposit. Acknowledgment is given to consultant in petrography, Robert L. The Lime Creek* ore body in northwestern British Columbia is one of the few commercial primary stockwork-type molybdenite deposits in North America. Others include the Climax, Urad-Henderson, Questa, and Endako ore bodies. They are mined on a low grade-high tonnage basis, and are open pit operations except for Climax and Urad-Henderson. Much recent geochemical research on both porphyry copper and stockwork MoS2 deposits has been concerned with dating of micas related to the mineralization and associated igneous rocks. The results appear to show that mineralization and the predominant magmatic events of the deposit are indistinguishable in age (1-5), except where dating has been in sufficient detail to resolve the analytical overlap (6). At Lime Creek, geologic information shows that the Main granodiorite, the major intrusive and dominant host rock for MoS2 mineralization, was emplaced and had solidified sometime prior to the introduction of MoS2. The first MoS2 episode is intimately related to localized bodies of kalialaskite which clearly intrude the older stock. K-Ar dating was undertaken to clarify the age relations between Lime Creek plutonism and the apparently younger hydrothermal event that began with kalialaskite.
