The initial step in the pelletizing of iron ores is the production of green balls. The importance of this step cannot be overemphasized as the physical quality of the green balls has a very significant effect on the subsequent induration process, regardless of the type of the indurating equipment employed. The ability of the green balls to withstand the rigors of handling, distribution, compaction and drying will have an effect on the degree of success of any pelletizing operation. Many factors affect the physical quality of the green balls including the prior processing of the iron ore, the characteristics of the balling feed and the type and quality of the binder used (if any). When working on the development of a new project or studying an existing operation, it is often desirable to determine what effect variations in these factors will have on green ball quality. It is generally impractical to make these determinations on a commercial, or even pilot plant scale, especially when the number of variables to be studied is large. Because of this, many organizations have developed batch techniques for producing green balls to enable them to perform such investigations with a minimum of time and expense. The batch balling method is at best, only an approximation of commercial balling systems. Many practitioners employ the use of pre-formed seed pellets to initiate a batch run. Thus, the growth mechanism encountered in any experiment is essentially snowballing. Unless an instability is introduced into a balling test (such as an excessive initial feed rate or an unusual feed material characteristic) the growth mechanism of coalescence is not present to a significant extent nor is it desirable. In a continuous operation, both mechanisms are present and necessary to sustaining the system. The batch balling technique thus produces pellets in an idealized manner and cannot be used to directly predict commercial green ball qualities. A general relationship does exist however, and the procedure is fairly sensitive to variations in test parameters. Although many refinements to this technique have been introduced over the years, batch balling is still essentially an art and subject to "operator effect". Therefore, to assure consistant and reliable results, skilled technicians who carefully adhere to established practice must be utilized.

The McCoy/Cove mine is located 48 km (30 miles) south of Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA, in the Fish Creek Mountains at an elevation of 1548 m (5080 ft), see Figure 1. Joseph H. McCoy first discovered gold at this location in 1914. This discovery led to the Gold Dome Mine which produced the first gold from this area in 1928. After the Gold Dome era, the land remained relatively dormant until Houston oil and Minerals Corporation purchased the claims from the Summa corporation and defined an ore body at the present day McCoy pit. In 1986 Tenneco Minerals (formerly Houston oil and Minerals corporation), sold the McCoy mine and adjoining claims to Echo Bay Minerals corporation. The Cove ore body was discovered soon after the sale to Echo Bay. Echo Bay expanded the heap leach operation and built the present mill which began processing ore in the fall of 1989.

During the past century, the Florida Phosphate Industry has established an enviable record of innovative technology in nearly all aspects of mining and beneficiation. A notable exception is the lack of technology to improve the present practice of storing waste clay in earthen dams. The rule which has been adopted by the Department of Natural Resources states, "Since storage of clay wastes for long periods of time interferes with expeditious reclamation and since above grade storage of clays takes otherwise useful land out of production and raises potential health and safety problems, below grade storage and rapid reclamation techniques are encouraged." The two waste products from the beneficiation plant are clay slimes (-0.1 mm in size) and sand tailings. The sand tailings do not present a problem since the tailings rapidly dewater to a dry weight of about 100 pounds/ft3 and make good land fill. By contrast, disposal of waste clay slimes is a formidable task. The basic problem is simply that the waste clay not only dewaters very slowly, but also that the ultimate solids content is very low and in most cases the volume of the clay greatly exceeds the available volume of below ground storage of the mined land.

A series of performance studies have been conducted using counter-current column flotation to recover a marketable clean coal product from existing preparation plant fine waste streams. The test work was conducted at several preparation plant sites in Kentucky and Virginia and utilized a 0.15m (6 in.) I.D. column that was 5.79m (19 ft.) high. The refuse streams tested included both thickener feed and classifying cyclone overflow with a typical size distribution of 100 mesh X O. The percent solids of the column flotation feed varied from 1.5 to 15% while the ash content ranged from 30-60%. The concentrates produced contained 2-10% ash with BTU recoveries of nearly 90% using 0.12-1.25 kg/ton (0.25-2.5 lbs/ton) fuel oil and 0.12 kg/ton (0.25 lb/ton) MIBC. These results were consistent with or better than results obtained in preliminary laboratory scale column flotation evaluation. Test results from 7 different seams are discussed as well as scale-up relationships utilized to design a full scale installation presently in operation.

Throughout the history of the development of mechanical conveyor systems, it has always been an established condition that loads are received at one end of a single-belt conveyor and discharged at the other end, in a point-to-point, manner. In systems designed for the continuous transport of granular materials, vertical or horizontal changes in; direction have always necessitated two or mope single-belt conveyor units, with a corresponding number of motors, assemblies and attendant mechanical and human or electronic controls. Besides these high-cost factors, every change in the system's direction also calls for a transfer point that involves a drop-back of the material from one level to another with some loss of the material and, in many cases, unwanted additional granulation. Where changes in the location of the discharge point are wanted, the conventional single-belt conveyor must either be replaced by a shorter or longer unit or additional units purchased and installed, or existing units rearranged. This can take days or weeks, and involve special expenditures as well as loss of valuable production time.

A significant news item appearing in a coal mining journal in November 1969 stated simply that a Caterpillar D-333-CNA engine had received Bureau of Mines Schedule 31 approval. This item occurring at the time a new mining property in Martin County of East Kentucky was being prospected and prepared for mining, resulted in the manage-ment of Martin County Coal Corporation asking the question, "Why not use diesel equipment in our new operation?" Martin County Coal Corporation is part of the A. T. Massey Coal Company, Incorporated organization. The property being developed is on a 17,500 acre leasehold obtained from Pocahontas Land Corporation and lies in the Wolf Creek area of Martin County. The Norfolk and Western Railway Company built a 24-mile railroad into this undeveloped section of Kentucky to tap a huge reserve of steam coal. Duke Power Company is the customer who will take all of the production from Martin County Coal Corporation mines which ultimately is projected to be 2,000,000 tons annually. Four coal seams, all above drainage, are included in the lease. The Middle Coalburg and Stockton are being deep mined now and it is in those mines that the diesel haulage equipment was introduced. This paper will endeavor to trace the steps loading to the introduction of the first diesel-powered Wagner Mining Equipment Company ScoopTram in a coal mine in America. It will further elaborate on the features which make this unit a very versatile and useful utility unit as well as the safety features which are incorporated in the machine. To address the U.S. Department of Energy’s critical minerals strategies regarding rare earth elements (REE) in the U.S.A. This study evaluated apatite-rich mine tailing from the historic Pea Ridge Iron Mine (PR) for possible enrichment of REE by the froth flotation process. Comprehensive characterization studies were performed on the tailing samples to quantify the REE content, identify the REEbearing minerals and their liberation behavior. The aforementioned characterization studies were: x-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and TESCAN’s Integrated Mineral Analysis (TIMA). The ICP-MS analysis showed that the concentrations of heavy-REE and light-REE were 8000 ppm and 3000 ppm, respectively. TIMA showed that monazite was the major REE-bearing mineral. Additionally, it was shown that monazite and other REE-bearing minerals were strongly locked within larger apatite grains. Findings from the characterization studies suggested that REE could be enriched using phosphate minerals’ direct froth flotation process. Flotation feasibility tests were performed using selected organic and inorganic iron oxides’ depressants, including polyacrylamide (PAM), in-house synthesized hybrid polyacrylamide (HyPAM), chitosan, sodium silicates, and corn starch. Results showed that the depressant’s efficiency at pH 9 was in the following order: HyPAM > chitosan > PAM > sodium metasilicate > corn starch. Zeta potential studies on the selected depressants indicated that chitosan had the highest adsorption on magnetite’s surface at pH 7. Therefore, additional batch flotation experiments using chitosan as an iron oxides depressant were conducted as a function of chitosan dosage. Results indicated that the highest P2O5 recovery of 55% and grade of 28 wt.% were obtained at 150g/t of chitosan. However, the concentrate’s highest total REE enrichment of 1.07% was achieved at a 200 g/t dosage of chitosan. The low enrichment of REE highlighted the complex mineralogy of the PR tailings and the need to implement additional beneficiation strategies before and after the froth flotation process.

I truly free enterprise system requires free and unrestricted competition among a diversity of suppliers, in order to function properly. The natural attrition of the marketplace tends on the one hand to narrow the competitive field ... but the flow of new competitors entering the arena provides a "diluting" effect, and a "balanced" market place. Without the ready flow of new business entrants, the market becomes increasingly concentrated in the hands of fewer and. fewer firms. Competition among suppliers is diminished and the "free" marketplace suffers accordingly. A number of organizations, both governmental and private, have recently expressed grave con¬cern over the competitive future of the Western coal market. While most have noted that there is currently adequate competition within the Western market, some have cited the growing con¬centration of coal ownership ... particularly federal lease ownership ... in the hands of a relatively few firms. They suggest that unless this apparent trend is reversed or at least stemmed, the number of new firms entering the federally-dominated West may become reduced to the point where competition will suffer.

There is little doubt that the stability of both highwalls and spoil piles is essential to efficient strip mining. Accurate determination of the appropriate geotechnical parameters will pay dividends during mining, but only if the mine operation closely follows the engineering plans which have incorporated These factors. Productivity is invariably higher in mines where failure of highwalls and spoil piles does not occur. This is the result of the reduced rehandle and better working conditions found in stable mines. Control of the waste piles and highwalls also leads to better coal recover since failures can result in the burial of uncovered coal, which is then lost to mining. Safety is an important consideration. The importance of providing a safe working place for employees and of protecting costly mining equipment is hard to overemphasize. For miners, working in areas where instability exists, the degree of hazard involved in their occupation is increased particularly where night operations are involved. It is true, too, that there have been many cases where loading equipment has been buried and severely damaged by failures.

Aggregate producers nationwide well recognize the numerous problems often faced in securing local approval to open and operate new gravel pits and rock quarries. Similar problems are faced in Colorado, but this region also presents certain political, social, and geological complexities that have become particularly troublesome in the last 10 years. The gravity of the local permitting dilemma can be related directly to the worsening supply-demand imbalance for aggregates in the state's most populated area, the Front Range urban corridor, particularly the Denver metropolitan area. The drive to develop crushed-rock reserves to supplement dwindling alluvial supplies and to meet increasing regional growth demands was somewhat predictable but perhaps more a "last resort" alternative forced onto producers by a hesitant and often apathetic government.

The paper presents the results of a plant test using WEMCO 1 + 1 enclosed flotation machines for inert gas (nitrogen) flotation of by-product molybdenite from copper sulfide concentrate. Copper depressant consumption in the rougher flotation stage was reduced by 68% as reagent consuming oxygen was removed from the flotation air. Unlike other nitrogen flotation systems used in the industry, nitrogen is recovered above the flotation cells and from froth in tails and concentrate streams and recycled, resulting in minimal nitrogen makeup requirement.

A radioisotope probe (Minexan 202) capable of simultaneously analyzing a mineral slurry for five elements and pulp density has been developed by Outokumpu Oy, Finland. The probe is designed to operate immersed directly in a process stream, or it can be equipped with a flow cell through which passes a continuous sample of the main stream. A minicomputer (PDPII) is used to control the probes and calculate the assay data. This paper describes the probe as applied to slurry analysis and compares it to the conventional x-ray on-stream analyzer (Courier 300).

At long last, mining is on the rebound in Minnesota?s Iron Range and the excitement is starting to show. The SME Minnesota Section?s annual meeting was once again held in the heart of Iron Range country, at the Duluth Entertainment and Conference Center on the Duluth waterfront. The conference boasted a record attendance of 475 people and its largest-ever trade show. Appearances by Governor Mark Dayton?s new Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB) appointee, Tony Sertich, as well as a local Fox news crew (see clip on SME website [link: http://fox21online.com/news/duluth-mining-conference-breeds-optimism-tech-innovation]) made clear that a lot of eyes [ ] are on the industry as it dusts itself off from the 2008-2009 recession. While the early years of the 21st century were very good to the Iron Range, the global drop in commodities prices and production left many companies reeling and brought back bad memories of the collapse of the industry in the 1980s. However, two years of solid growth and a rebound to above pre-2008 production levels have let the Minnesota mining industry to relax a little and talk seriously about long-term growth and stability.

Monitoring and control of conventional industrial wet grinding circuits is conceptually straightforward. However, since production objectives and operating constraints can vary widely from plant to plant, there is probably no single overall grinding circuit control strategy which is "best" in all cases; in-variably some compromise is necessary between performance desired under ideal conditions and performance achievable in practice. The recent advent of relatively low cost, reliable, high speed small computer systems is revolutionizing daily operations in increasing numbers of metallurgical processing plants. Of special power and capability is a hierarchical computer network like that currently in use at the Pinto Valley Operations of the Cities Service Company. Several satellite processors for key plant areas communicate with a master computer operating under a powerful multitasking real-time operating system. Hardware and software structure is such that downtime on one of the processors -including the master -does not have a major impact on overall system operation. Admittedly, the powerful, core efficient table driven satellite software, which handles process/computer communication, calculation of nonmeasured process variables, and basic Direct Digital Control functions, is difficult to modify. However, important high level process monitoring, report preparation, graphic display, and supervisory control functions -including economic optimization -can be implemented by project engineers at the plant site. Thus, for example, new control strategies can be quickly examined and rapidly evaluated. Such computer monitoring capability also permits use of short duration process pulse tests for approximate dynamic modeling and rapid calculation of controller tuning constants for single loop dominant systems. Following a brief back-ground discussion of the Pinto Valley Project, we present some of the more interesting results and conclusions of our work over the past year.

Several years ago it became apparent to some of our people that; there was developing a very definite need for largee coal reserves in the West to satisfy- the need for fuel for the furnaces of electric generating plants with the rapid development of, the West, of both population and industry, it was impossible for hydro-electrics plants to keep up with the ever increasing demand for electricity. In 1960, Mr. E. R. Phelps, then associated with the engineering department of Peabody Coal Company, began a search for and development of coal deposits in the very remote northeast section of Arizona near the village of Kayenta. Travel to this section of the country was not easy even at this late date, and it was an eight hour drive from Farmington, New Mexico to Kayenta, Arizona, a distance of some 130 miles. The trip was over roads that even' a-horse and wagon had trouble negotiating and a four wheel drive vehicle was about the only type of transportation that could satisfactorily traverse these roads, as testify many badly beaten sedans and coupes that tried it. Since that time a very excellent road has been constructed from Shiprock; New Mexico to Cameron, Arizona where it junctions with another excellent road that runs north to Page, Arizona and the Lake. Powell area and south to Flagstaff, Arizona on highway 66. Kayenta is a small village nestled at the foot of the Black Mesa near its northeast extremities. The coal deposits of interest were on the surface of the mesa. This location presented another problem, as the only trail to the top of the mesa was intended for walking, horseback, or a brave soul In a horse and wagon. Once again the four wheel drive vehicle was about the only answer. To reach the coal deposits you must climb the mesa, which is vertical ascent of some 1,500 feet, and then proceed southward into the bowl of the mesa with an ensuing descent of some 1,000 feet, finally coming to an elevation of 6,500 feet, at which elevation the coal outcrops become apparent.

Current machine learning models used for roof fall hazard prediction are mounted on expensive sensors, computationally expensive, or lack the robustness for accurate prediction in the underground mining environment. This research aims to provide a design methodology for a robust, low-cost, deep learning-based algorithm for underground mine roof fall hazard prediction. A data sampling plan is developed to ensure the replicability and robustness of the developed model. In addition, feature engineering and transformation methods are described to identify relevant features for hazard identification. The methodology described here will be used in model development, tested, and implemented as a real-time mobile device application. The new tool will be expected to detect roof fall hazards in real-time and contribute to a crowdsourcing approach for underground hazard detection.

The Bureau of Mines measured the geochemical changes as H2S04 was used for in situ uranium leaching by Rocky Mountain Energy Company near Casper, Wyoming. Cores and ground water were analyzed before leaching. Water samples were taken from observation wells located between injection and production wells as the leach solution was brought up to full strength in several steps. Measurements were made of pH, Eh, temperature, conductivity, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, HC03, U, V, Na, K, Ca, Mg, SO4, C1, Mo, Mn, Fe, Al, Si, F, P, As, and Se. The data were gathered to assist in geochemical modeling of leaching and to study the potential environmental effects of acid leaching. Environmental considerations appear favorable. For example, the concentration of Se, a toxic element often found in uranium deposits, stayed below the EPA standard for drinking water.

Mott MacDonald and Project Management Advisors are providing Technical and Project Management services for San Diego County for the Courthouse Commons Project. The Courthouse Commons Project involves the redevelopment of three downtown blocks owned by San Diego County and construction of an Inmate Transfer Tunnel between the County Central Jail and the San Diego Central Court. The tunnel will be 327 feet long, crosses the San Diego Fault and is being constructed using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). This paper discusses the history and procure‑ ment strategy for the project, the technical aspects of the transfer tunnel and the con‑ struction progress of the tunnel to date.

The Purpose of the Paper It is fitting that the first paper of a session on the Financial Aspects of Mining should be on the basic data upon which any financial discussion of a mining project must be based. The history of a mining project starts with exploration in an area considered geologically favorable for mineralization and culminates in the discovery of a body of valuable mineral material commonly known as a mineral deposit. Subsequently more detailed exploration establishes the approximate size, shape, tonnage and average grade of the deposit by surface and/or underground drilling, -surface trenching and/or underground workings. Some preliminary metallurgical testing and other studies, as required, are made at this time. Development work is then carried out to provide representative samples for determining flowsheet and metallurgical balances, preparing the deposit for production and establishing more firmly the grade and mining characteristics of the deposit. A feasibility study is then made of the engineering aspects of the project including the estimation of operating coats, the capital required to place the deposit into production, profit and return on investment. Abandoned uranium mines in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota were sampled for uranium, radium, and rare earth elements during 1992 and 1993. Analyses of water samples from several shallow ponds in the mine pits showed pH values between 3 and 4 with uranium concentrations between 1600 and 2600 ppb. Rare earth elements and their respective isotopes were analyzed with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer and were referenced to a shale normalization pattern. All samples showed an enrichment in the middle rare earth elements. Rare earth levels often were greater than 0.2 ppm. At one site, the concentrations of lanthanides were 150,000 times above background levels. While the southern Black Hills have long been known for rich uranium ore deposits, these analyses show that significant levels of rare earth elements also are present, indicating that the potential exist for future development.
