Scope of Section The physical characterization of an ore or mineral mixture in such detail that mineral processing may be effectively applied to create more useful products is one part of the technology of sampling and testing. In addition, the evaluation of the multitude of separation processes, both physical and chemical, combined with ancillary opera¬tions and performed on samples at a laboratory scale, is another part of the testing procedure. Although analytical techniques provid¬ing quantitative determinations of elemental compositions are an im¬portant and necessary supplement to any testing program, that field of endeavor is a well-developed, separate entity beyond the scope of this Section. Sampling procedures cover the practice of selecting representative quantities of test materials in the field to evaluate mineral deposits, and extend to techniques of obtaining process samples in slurry and bulk ore as part of process evaluation. The same techniques are appli¬cable, of course, to standardized methods of metallurgical accounting. Sampling is also an important facet of successful on-line measurement of slurry properties such as assays and particle size in the practice of automation. However, the sampling methods in this case can be different from those needed for precise testing and accounting pur¬poses. Sampling was well defined in Taggart's Handbook as "the opera¬tion of removing a part convenient in size for testing, from a whole which is of much greater bulk, in such a way that the proportion and distribution of the quality to be tested (e.g., specific gravity, metal content, recoverability) are the same in both the whole and the part removed (SAMPLE). The conditions of the more stringent definition, that the sample shall be completely representative of the whole as regards all aspects save bulk, are practically never fulfilled when heterogenous mineral mixtures are sampled." Taggart's Handbook of Mineral Dressing, Section 19, "Sampling and Testing," continues to be a very useful compendium of principles and techniques, particularly as applied to manual methods for han¬dling samples. In the intervening years since its last revision, substan¬tial progress has been made in both the theory and the techniques; thus, this current contribution is designed to be an extension of the earlier work, yet complete enough to provide procedural guidelines to methods of continuing validity. Although basic principles of testing remain unchanged, the meth¬ods of applying those principles have undergone great change. New testing equipment has become available, yielding a greater precision of results. Testing methods have been refined which, in many cases, allows for a valid scale up of flowsheet designs without the necessity of costly pilot or prototype plant development. Justification for a Sampling and Testing Program* The proper evaluation of a mineral property is a complicated process. It often is done on a team basis with the exploration geologist, mining engineer, mineral process engineer (extractive metallurgist), economist, and product utilizer (ceramist, chemical engineer, chemist, metallurgist, etc.) all represented. The mineral processing engineer is a key member because he can provide a go no-go answer to the question, "Can this ore be processed economically?" In addition, his judgment on the response of even the initial sample to processing can be an invaluable guide to the proposed process and its mutations. Since the capital investment and operating costs are so sensitive to the type of process used, the judgment of the mineral processing engineer forms an important part of the early evaluation of the profitability of a new mining venture. This early estimation of the processing approach is all the more important since, for some metalliferous ores, the capital investment for mill, smelter, water supply, and tailings disposal exceeds the cost of the mine. At present, for commodities such as coal, the reverse is true. There is a smaller capital investment for the coal preparation plant than for the mine. In general, both the capital and operating costs escalate very rapidly in the following order: gravity concentration of alluvial deposits (e.g., dredging), gravity concentration of lode ores, flotation, simple hydrometallurgical processes, and complicated hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes. The latter two processes may cost 100 to 1,000 times more per ton treated than processing of a simple alluvial deposit. This dictates that the valuable mineral be concentrated as much as possible to minimize the total tonnage treated in the more expensive operations. Within each of these ore-processing categories there is a wide range of process sophistication and hence of capital and operating costs. Perhaps the greatest variations are in the chemical processing of ores. These range from the simple leaching of a copper waste dump to very sophisticated hydrometallurgical processing of ores in increasing order of cost. Because the overall cost of a mining venture is so sensitive to the process selected, it is essential that the mineral¬ processing engineer evaluate the ore in the initial stages of the development of an ore body. As better samples become available, he must continually revise his estimate of the process to be employed. The sampling and testing process must be a necessary and continuing activity throughout the life of a project. One fundamental aspect of nearly all mineral deposits is the inherent variability of the mineral assemblage and composition. A utopian goal of any processing plant is to have the process so flexible and so well-defined that an automatic process control system can optimize the economic recovery at all times. Since this is rarely possible, a continuing or at least a periodic testing program is desirable. Variables to be considered are: 1) Ore body inconsistencies. 2) Zonal variations. 3) Feed variations from mining plan or methods. 4) Variable performance of processing units due to wear. 5) Seasonal or other changes affecting processing conditions such as water quality, temperature, etc. 6) Changing market conditions for product quality or byproducts. 7) Technological advances in processing methods or equipment. 8) Increasing demands for environmental control. 9) Changing economics of competitive processes, of supplies, of capital investment vs. labor costs, etc. Sampling Procedures Preliminary Guidelines for Sampling Ore Deposit Studies. t At a very early stage, it is essential that the mineral processing engineer receive a sample of the ore. This may be a portion of the diamond drill core or a split from the trench, pit, churn drill, channel, or sheet sample. Even a grab sample may have some value, but it should be selected by the mining engineer or exploration geologist to be as representative of the ore body as possible within his best judgment. The sample delivered to the process engineer should have been subjected to as little prior crushing as is practical since fine sizes are difficult to concentrate. In addition, finely ground ores are readily oxidized and thus may give misleading test results. Furthermore, ground samples may make it impossible to eval¬uate either the comminution or the coarse-gravity concentration pro¬cesses. For an initial evaluation, a good deal may often be learned from a sample of only a few pounds if that is all that is available. To obtain the maximum information from a sample, its selection should be carefully discussed with the mineral processing engineer. In addi¬tion to being as representative as possible, the mineralogically distinct samples should be carefully segregated rather than composited. Since drastically different processes are often needed to process samples of differing mineralogy, considerable care and time must be exercised during this sample collection step. The segregation of samples showing gross mineralogical differences, such as the oxide caping on a sulfide deposit or a laterized zone, is easy. It is the more subtle changes in mineralogy that can often elude the field man. Yet these differences are often sufficient to dictate that an entirely different type of process be used. Obviously, the selection of these initial samples for ore testing and mineralogical studies requires that it be done by a man of consider¬able experience and judgment. While the mining engineer or field geologist is collecting these samples, he should also note and convey to the processing engineer such details as water quality and availabil¬ity, terrain, potential mill location, tailings-disposal areas, case of transportation, etc. As the property is developed with additional drill holes, adits, etc., larger and more representative samples will be required to develop the ore-processing flowsheet more adequately. If pilot-plant studies are required, a very large sample may be necessary. Though the type and amount of sample collected for flowsheet development investigations vary widely, gathering a representative sample of the ore body is a prime requisite for any process development effort. An economic simulation model was developed to predict the amount of copper recovered from copper oxide deposits and the cost of producing it as a function of the deposit parameters. The economic simulation model includes models of fragmentation design and cost, copper extraction, solution distribution and recovery, effluent solution cutoff grade, and financial analysis. Cost and price indices were also developed to evaluate the economic feasibility of in situ leaching operations as a function of their starting date. Application of the models to various properties having the same area and different ore thickness shows that the effluent solution cutoff grade does not vary with the ore thickness nor with its grade. The percent of copper recovery is, however, shown to increase with the increase in the ore thickness and is independent of the ore grade. it is also shown that while the profit per unit of extracted copper increases with the increase in ore grade or ore thickness, the rate of return on total investment does not show any correlation

"Rare earth elements (REEs) found in coal are in the form of minerals, ion-adsorbed onto clay surfaces or inner layers, or organically bound. Rare earth minerals such as monazite exist in coal and have grain sizes smaller than 5 µm. In this study, froth flotation was successful in concentrating rare earth minerals existing in a thickener underflow material derived from Fire Clay seam coal that contained around 431 ppm of total rare earth elements (TREE) on a dry ash basis. Conditioning with fatty acid followed by processing using multiple stages of conventional flotation produced a final concentrate containing 2,300 ppm TREE. Using a laboratory flotation column to limit hydraulic entrainment, the TREE content was further enriched to around 4,700 ppm, which equated to an enrichment ratio of 10:1.IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs) are becoming increasingly important and have been widely used as raw materials for the production of phosphor, metal catalysts, magnets and batteries (Binnemans et al., 2013; Zhang et al., 2015). REE recovery from alternative sources such as coal and coal byproducts has the potential to stabilize the economic viability of coal mining operations while providing a dependable supply of critical materials.The average REE content of the world’s coal resources is around 60 to 70 ppm (Zhang et al., 2015). There are many well-known coal beds with high contents of REEs such as those in the Far East coalfields in Russia with contents of 300 to 1,000 ppm, the Fire Clay coal seam in eastern Kentucky in the United States with contents around 500 ppm and the Sydney Basin in Nova Scotia, Canada, with contents of 72 to 483 ppm (Birk and White, 1991; Seredin, 1996; Hower, Ruppert and Eble, 1999; Blissett, Smalley and Rowson, 2014). The occurrence of REEs in coal and coal byproducts can be classified into three types: (1) rare earth minerals, such as monazite and xenotime, (2) ion-adsorbed REEs on clays and (3) REEs associated with organic matrices. The rare earth minerals in coal and coal byproducts are very small in particle size, generally on the micrometer and/or nanometer scales (Honaker et al., 2014). Froth flotation, which concentrates minerals based on surface chemistry differences, has been widely used to treat fine rare earth industrial minerals such as monazite, xenotime and bastnaesite (Abeidu, 1972; Cheng, Holtham and Tran, 1993; Pavez and Peres, 1994; Pavez, Brandao and Peres, 1996; Jordens et al., 2014). As such, flotation is a promising method for the concentration of rare earth minerals from coal and coal byproducts."

A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. The forestry reclamation approach (FRA) has been applied, almost exclusively, to flat or gently rolling surfaces. One of the primary steps in the FRA is to loosely grade the top 1.22 m (4 ft) of soil or substitute root growth medium to avoid excessive compaction. Concern has been expressed by regulators and the public that loose grading on steep slopes (i.e., greater than 23°) could lead to slope failures, which is one of the issues that the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) sought to correct. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. During this first phase of investigation, there has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analysis indicates that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope. Much has been written in the mining technical magazines about the caving system. Many of these articles were published in the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers prior to World War II. In recent years little has been written on mining methods or on the detailed planning always required. Block caving had primarily been used to mine deep copper ores in Africa, the United States and in Chile, although other ores had been mined by this same system. Asbestos ore had been caved in Canada, tin ore in Bolivia, molybdenum ore in Colorado, iron ore in Wyoming and Sweden, and limestone in California.

"Phosphate" is a misnomer as often used. The word is increasingly used to refer to any material containing phosphorus - an element essential to any form of life. Phosphate rock, a mineral - fluorapitate - is recovered from Florida's sedimentary deposits in particle sires ranging from 0.1 to 13.0 millimeter. This product of mining, washing, screening, and flotation is commonly called "phosphate". Its phosphorus content, measured and reported as P2O5, varies from 29% to 35%, and is essentially insoluble. "Phosphate" is also used to describe products containing soluble phosphorus obtained from acidulation of phosphate rock with mineral acids; primarily, sulfuric acid. Many miners have nearby chemical plants wherein phosphate rock is converted into upgraded products such as phosphoric acid, superphosohates, and ammonium phosphates with 45% to 70% P205, soluble and suitable for use as fertilizer. The rock and upgraded products are all commonly called "phosphate"; the plants, "phosphate plants' and the producers collectively are known as the "phosphate industry". The public in Central Florida generally loses identification of the individual operators that include major corporations such as IMC. Williams Companies, W.R. Grace, Mobil, Embark, U.S. Steel, Borden, American Cyanamid and others. They all become just a "phosphate company".

The recent non-equilibrium electro-phoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in soluble salt flotation systems suggest that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by hetero-coagulation. Previously reported flotation results confirm this surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model. However, the nature of the inter-particle forces responsible for hetero-coagulation of such oppositely charged particles at high ionic strengths remains to be determined. In this regard, atomic force microscopy was used for inter-particle force measurements at high ionic strengths. Model systems such as polystyrene/quartz and silica/sapphire were studied to measure the particle interaction forces prevalent at high ionic strengths. Results from this study indicate that while repulsive hydration forces exist between similarly charged hydrophilic particles, attractive forces exist between oppositely charged hydrophilic particles in high ionic strength solutions. The repulsive forces between similarly charged hydrophilic surfaces at high ionic strengths (2-4 M) are described by a double exponential function with decay lengths of 0.17 and 1.4 nm depending upon the surfaces involved. On the other hand, attractive forces were observed between oppositely charged hydrophilic surfaces at high ionic strengths (2-4M) and were described by a single exponential function with decay lengths of up to 9 nm depending upon the surfaces involved.

This article is a review of previous discussions about underground mining method selection and classification with the purpose to clearly define and classify the two groups of variables (indicators) involved in the mining selection process: key deposit indicators (KDIs) and key mining method indicators (KMIs). This paper provides a simple and clear approach for the classification and selection of a feasible underground mining method based on a predetermined set of favorable deposit characteristics, which are defined as key deposit indictors (KDIs). This article also gives a summary of the key advantages and disadvantages associated with every underground mining method based on their key mining indicators (KMIs). The selection method given in this paper is based on defining field KDIs and comparing them to the KDIs that are favorable to every considered mining method. By cross validating a matrix of favorable KDIs, the paper presents a simple approach to rank several underground mining methods using a scale from favorable to less favorable accordingly to the ore deposit characteristics (KDIs). KMIs are used to further complement KDI rankings by analyzing every method’s KMI performance based on the expected productivity of the mining operation being considered. To further assist the reader through the selection process, this paper gives basic sketches representing each of the primary underground mining methods discussed in this paper. Each method is given using the same 3D isometric view as spatial reference to assist the reader with visual interpretation and comparison between methods.

Dust collectors for roof bolting machines generally use a dry box to collect the roof bolting material. Recently, an underground mining operation converted a dry box dust collector to a wet box dust collector with a unique exception from MSHA for testing purposes. Water is routed to the roof bolter from the main water line of the continuous miner. The wet box utilizes a water spray to wet the incoming material. Testing was conducted comparing the two different collector types. Respirable dust concentrations surrounding the roof bolter with the different collection boxes were similar. The main difference in respirable dust concentrations occurred when cleaning the dust boxes. The average respirable dust concentration during cleaning of the wet box was 0.475 mg/m3, and during the cleaning of the dry box the average respirable dust concentration was 1.188 mg/m3. The silica content of the roof material was high, ranging from 28.9% to 52.7% during this study. The results from this study indicate that using the wet box as a collector reduced exposure to respirable dust up to 60%when cleaning the collector boxes. INTRODUCTION Currently, the dry vacuum dust collection system is the standard dust collector on roof bolters in underground coal mining. It has been proven to be an effective dust control to prevent roof bolter operators’ overexposure to coal mine respirable silica dust during roof bolting operations [Potts eta l, 2011 and Colinet, 2013]. The dry collection system works as follows: drill cuttings are vacuumed into the precleaner. The precleaner dumps oversized material onto the mine floor while undersized material enters the dust box via vacuum airflow produced by a blower. The cuttings entering the dust box are either deposited on the floor of the dust box or into a dust collector bag. The vacuum airflow leaves the dust box through a final filter which removes any small particles from the airflow. Figure 1 shows the internal view of two dry collection system boxes; one that does not use the dust collector bags and another that uses the dust collector bags. Dust collectors that use dust collector bags to contain material inside the dust collector box have been shown to provide better protection to roof bolter operators than dust collectors that do not use the bags [Listak and Beck 2008]. The dry collectors are very efficient at reducing respirable coal mine dust exposure from roof bolting activities. Recently, Blue Mountain Energy’s Deserado underground coal mining operation, outside Rangely, CO, made a modification to the dry collector system to convert it to a wet collector system with a unique exception from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for testing purposes. The wet collector system still uses a vacuum system to pull material from the vertical roof bolt hole, but incorporates a water spray nozzle located inside the dust box to wet the incoming material. The flow through the nozzle ranges from 1.9–7.6 lpm (0.5–2.0 gpm) at 0.69 MPa (100 psi). The conversion to the wet collector system removes the precleaner and the cyclones inside the dust box. The wet material (sludge) then empties through a specialized valve in the bottom of the box. The final filter is still used to prevent respirable dust from leaving the dust box through the exhaust. During operation, the wet collector dust box is opened and hosed clean after roof bolting every place. After every two entries the final filter is changed out. Figure 2 shows the inside of the wet collector box.

Hydraulic coal mining is being successfully practiced in China, U.S.S.R., Japan and Canada and in each country, excepting Japan where suitable sites are not available, the system is being expanded to either existing conventional mines or new mines. Productivity levels and economics at these mines are in all cases better than the productivities achieved in conventional mines in the same general localities. In the U.S.S.R. face productivities approaching 50 tons per man shift have been reported while in Canada the latest statistics show average face area productivity levels are in the region of 200 tons per man shift production monitor. In the United States hydraulic mining has not been actively pursued to the same degree and consequently there are no full scale hydraulic coal mines in operation or construction. Because many of the coal measures in the Western U.S.A. are generally somewhat similar to those being successfully hydraulic mined in Western Canada and parts of Siberia it is realistic to believe that successful hydraulic mines can be designed and developed in the Western U.S.A. Particularly if the vast technological base that already exists is used to improve on other people's ideas, systems, methods and equipment.

Many coal preparation plants discard fine coal (generally minus 100 mesh) because it is difficult to beneficiate economically. At the Kentucky Energy Cabinet Laboratory (KECL), the waste streams from several Kentucky preparation plants were evaluated for cleaning with counter-current column flotation. A series of performance evaluations were conducted using a 0.05 m (2 in.) internal diameter (I.D.) 7.9 m (26 ft.) high laboratory column. The objectives of these tests were to assess the performance in terms of recovery and percent ash in clean coal and to optimize the operating parameters relative to combustible recovery and grade. Refuse streams containing 30-50 percent ash were upgraded to 2-8 percent ash with Btu recoveries of nearly 90 percent. A pilot scale column flotation cell was installed at the Bell County Coal preparation plant. This pilot plant utilized a 5.79 m (19 ft.) high and 0.15 m (6 in.) I.D. column to verify the performance data of the 0.05 m (2 in.) I.D. column for two different waste streams. Performance evaluation and pilot plant testing results related to scale-up are discussed.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), with the assistance of cooperating underground mining operations and state agencies, has conducted research exploring devices and technologies that could be used to assist miners navigating through smoke and dust resulting from a fire or explosion. Recent events in mines confirm that smoke and dust can enter and contaminate mine escapeways, creating an atmosphere with severely reduced visibility. This reduced visibility results in substantially increased escape times, possible disorientation or confusion, and increased stress levels, and may prevent evacuation altogether. Tools or devices that assist miners in navigating through smoke-filled areas void of lifelines could make the difference in successful escape from the mine. This paper presents the results of OMSHR research to identify and evaluate tools and devices that could provide meaningful information to evacuating miners in areas with limited visibility and without the benefit of a lifeline.

"The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research on jackleg use and related accidents in underground metal mines. This paper provides an analysis and overview of jackleg drill usage, accidents, operational characteristics and alternatives, based on information from injury reports, legacy research, stakeholder input and published literature. The results indicate that jackleg drills are involved in more groundfall accidents in underground metal mines than any other drill, and jackleg-drill-related injuries are most prevalent at the face in the course of installing initial ground support. Practical mechanized alternatives to jackleg drills for drilling and bolting under incomplete support in narrow underground openings have not yet been realized. Small, versatile mechanized bolting equipment needs to be developed to address jackleg-drill-related accidents and improve safety at mines where jackleg drills are being used. IntroductionJackleg drill is a generic name for a handheld, rotary, percussion rock drill equipped with an attached reaction leg to provide stability and thrust (Fig. 1). All of the drill and leg controls are located near the operator’s handle at the rear of the head portion of the drill. Jackleg drills are classified according to the bore size of their pneumatic pistons, which normally range from 6.03 to 8.26 cm (2.375 to 3.25 in.) (Kurt, 1982; Clark, 2012). Jackleg drills typically weigh 46.7 kg (103 lb), but the weight can approach 54.4 kg (120 lb) after being fitted for operation with drill steel and air and water hoses (McKibbin and Clark, 2001). In underground mines, jackleg drills are commonly used to drill 3.8-cm (1.5-in.) diameter holes up to 1.83 m (6 ft) deep in rock."

Your committee doesn't assign any easy topics to us speakers. How do you define "successful" in what is essentially a losing game? I am reminded of the fellow who returned from a one-week vacation in Las Vegas, and proudly stated, "I only lost $150." To him, that was "success." I am afraid that workers' compensation is a losing game for employers, too, and success has to be defined in terms of how much or how little is lost. We have no chance of producing a profit for our employer. We will narrow down to some suggestions about conducting a workers' compensation program at the plant level, but first I want to discuss the general legal, social and legislative climate in which your plant program operates. Workers' compensation is a statutory program with its general parameters established by the legislature. These parameters are then amplified by the boards and commissions established to administer workers' compensation. What influences the legislature and the boards and commissions as they establish the framework in which we must function?

Lynn lake, Manitoha, where Sherritt has operated a copper-nickel mine since 1954, is located north of the 56th parallel approximately SOO miles north of Winnipeg. Sherritt's new, 3,000 tpd, copper-zinc Fox Mine is situated 30 miles southwest of Lynn lake. This paper focuses on the Fox Mine concentrator, hut first some background information. Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited started mining operations as a copper-zinc producer in 1931 at Sherridon, Manitoba, 150 miles south of Lynn Lake. As Sherridon fizzled out development of a series of nickel-copper orebodies commenced at Lynn Lake. The Forward process was developed to treat the nickel concentrate from the Lynn concentrator. Sherritt's ammonia leaching process is now history and is expected to gain more prominence as pressure is applied to the mining industry for closer environmental control. But few are aware of the fact that the present Lynn Lake crushing plant and concentrator were dismantled in the autumn of 1951 and freighted from Sherridon by tractor train during the winters of 1952 and 1953. The copper-zinc orehody at Fox Mine was discovered early in 1961 by geophysical methods which included both airborne and ground surveys. It is part of a ,large body of massive and semi-massive sulphides consisting chiefly of pyrite; with chalcopyrite, sphalerite (containing 7-9% iron) and pyrrhotite in varying proportions which occur within a series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The total mineralized zone is a lenticular body with a minimum average length and width of 1,350 feet and 66 feet respectively, to the explored depth of 2,000 feet. The average sulphide content is 67%. Higher zinc zones are masses of pyrite grains cemented by sphalerite with lower than average copper content. Zones higher in copper and lower in zinc are slightly more quartzose. Gold and silver are present in small amounts roughly proportional to the copper content.

In the USA, miners are at higher risk for work-related disorders that could precipitate an opioid prescription, injury-related opioid prescriptions, and opioid overdose. We aimed to support prevention of these outcomes with an “opioid hazard awareness” miner safety training module. In January and February 2020, the training module was embedded within required mining safety and health training for stone, sand, and gravel miners in Massachusetts (USA). Training impact and reception were assessed with a pre- and post-training survey of trainee characteristics, training content knowledge, and attitudes. Over 800 miners were trained and over 600 responded to surveys. We found statistically significant improvements in opioid risk factor knowledge and knowledge of resources to help a coworker. Nonstigmatizing attitudes were high both at baseline and following the training. The training was perceived as relevant and useful by trainees. Improving opioid hazard awareness in high-risk worker populations has potential to reduce opioid dependence and downstream impacts including overdose death. Employer injury-prevention efforts should be reinforced while worker health and safety training enhances awareness of opioid-related harms and prevention strategies for miners and other high-risk worker populations.

The Leadville District has been a prominent metal producer since its discovery in 1860. Veins and replacement bodies both have contributed to district production. The latter have been the major metal sources and are hosted within the Paleozoic Leadville, Dyer, and Manitou Dolomites. Igneous bodies representing eight separate events cut the sedimentary section. The main intrusive complex within the district occurs in the Breece Hill area and was the thermal center about which the vein and replacement ores exhibit mineralogical zoning. Precious metal-pyrite-quartz veins (quartz Th= 422 to 469°C; salinity < 4.2 wt. percent eNaCI) occur within or peripheral to the Breece Hill Intrusive Complex, whereas base metal veins and replacement bodies extend from the complex margins outward as much as 2 mi. Pre-ore and post-ore igneous bodies occur, but Fragmental Porphyry dikes immediately post-date the ore event. The Fragmental Porphyry grades downward from a heterolithic breccia with rock-flour matrix to one with a dark, glassy, sulfide- and phenocryst-bearing matrix, commonly with quartz-feldspar porphyry selvages on the dike. Two types of replacement bodies are recognized in the district: 1) the Leadville-type (LTM), massive sulfide (> 60% sulfides) bodies with recoverable Zn, Pb, Ag, and Au, and 2) the Sherman-type (STM), sulfide bodies (low total sulfide) with barite, galena, sphalerite, argentian tetra.hedrite, and minor pyrite. The latter type occurs only within the Leadville Dolomite and is found throughout the Mosquito Range and extending into the Alma District. The Leadville-type replacement bodies are zoned with a pyritic margin and base metal core. Wallrock alteration and trace Pb-Zn dispersion are strongly developed in igneous wallrocks but are weakly developed in carbonate wallrocks. Cu:Zn, Ag:Zn, and Au:Fe ratios increase outward from the center to the margins of LTM. Some of the sulfide bodies are localized on earlier-formed magnetite skarns. Pyrrhotite, pyrite, and marcasite are the earliest formed sulfide phases while chalcopyrite, marmatite, and galena developed later. Tetrahedrite and electrum occur in vugs and fine veinlets cutting the sulfides. Late-stage barite, dolomite, and fluorite occur as minor phases. Pressure-corrected Th for quartz (375-410°C), sphalerite (374-387°C), barite (320-360°C), and dolomite (310-314°C) fluid inclusions with salinities < 5.2 wt. percent eNaCI characterize the fluid responsible for the formation of the Leadville-type orebodies. These values clearly demonstrate the high temperature and low salinity of the ore fluids. Sulfur isotope analyses for galena and barite from LTM are - 1.9 to + 0.9%o and 7.8%o, respectively. Proximity to feeder veins and favorable dolomite hosts are the principal controls on ore localization. The Sherman-type bodies are not internally zoned but commonly have host rock silicification near the orebody margin or in the footwall rocks adjacent to fluid flowpaths along faults. Early quartz, pyrite, dolomite, and white barite precede base metal-silver minerals which are followed by late quartz and golden barite. It is not clear whether the early quartz and the late quartz and barite are part of the STM-forming process. Fluid inclusion analyses yield trapping temperatures as follows: early quartz, 316-341 °C; barite, 264-347°C; low-iron sphalerite, 215-265°C; and late quartz, 260-278°C. All inclusion fluids have salinities < 8.1 wt. percent eNaCI. Sulfur isotope values for barite and galena from STM range from 13.2 to 24.00/00 (avg: 18.4%o) and -6.8 to -3.8%o (avg: -5.5o/00), respectively. A hydrothermal fluid d34SSS of about 15%o is needed in order for galena and barite in equilibrium to exhibit the observed sulfur isotope compositions. Equilibrium sulfur isotope fractionation between barite and galena indicates a 300°C temperature of deposition. Two separate hydrothermal events appear to have taken place to form the distinctive Leadville-type orebodies and those of the Sherman-type assemblage. The STM is known to be older than the LTM. The latter is likely mid-Tertiary in age, post-dating emplacement of the Johnson Gulch Porphyry. LTM is clearly related to meteoric leaching of sulfur and lead (and other metals) from the upper portions of the Breece Hill Stock. Fluids were transmitted along faults, bedding planes, and contacts, and cooled away from the intrusive complex. Early ore fluids were weakly acidic and developed argillic assemblages in the igneous rocks adjacent to the fluid conduits. Reaction/replacement of carbonate rocks occurred where fluids encountered dolomite, but rapid neutralization prevented any wide-spread alteration beyond the ore-carbonate host contact. Pressures based on sphalerite geobarometry and stratigraphic reconstruction were 1.0-1.2 Kb. The high temperatures of vein and replacement ore fluids indicate that chloride complexing was more effective in metal transport than bisulfide complexes. Cooling, dilution of ore fluids, and reaction with carbonate rocks were the major factors in LTM ore deposition. STM formed over wide expanses of the Leadville Dolomite terrain adjacent to (and possibly capping) the Sawatch uplift. Sedimentary sulfur was derived from Pennsylvanian evaporite-bearing sequences adjacent to the uplift. Ore leads are strongly radiogenic (J-type) and are compatible with a crustal-leaching model. Temperatures of ore formation are higher, and ore-fluid salinities are lower than Mississippi Valley-type ore fluids. Superimposed upon dark-gray, diagenetic Leadville Dolomite are several stages of hydrothermal dolomite regionally distributed astride intrusive centers of the Colorado Mineral Belt. The presence of these later dolomites argues for dolomitization and later ore deposition in response to an abnormal thermal gradient caused by emplacement of Laramide batholiths and their generation of convective flow of meteoric fluids.

The tonnage produced on mechanized automated retreating longwall faces in the United States is growing rapidly. This time last year some 14 faces were operating, and in addition to that, three were known to be down looking towards revision or repairs before being placed back in service. These, it is believed, are now in service. It is estimated at the present time, therefore, that somewhere between 20 and 25 faces are being operated in the country. A survey made last year by the School of Mines, West Virginia University, indicated that longwall mining in general has been beset with a great many problems, some more serious than others. The problems that we propose to discuss here are those pertaining to roof and floor trouble in the tailgates. Longwalls are operating in this country at the present time under an overburden ranging from 200 feet to nearly 3000 feet. Main and tailgate entries are operating in panels of up to five each, with the width of the pillars between these entries varying from 20 to 50 feet. Face lengths are running from 270 feet to 670; actually a face 800 feet long should be possible. The most economical face is often spoken of as being around 450 feet.

In this study, NIOSH researchers conducted a machine learning analysis to examine whether a model could be constructed to assess the probability of dynamic failure occurrence based on geochemical and petrographic data. Random forest, cluster analysis and dimension reduction were all applied. The objective of dimensionality reduction was to explore patterns and groupings in the data and search for relations between compositional parameters. Cluster analyses were performed to determine if an algorithm could find clusters with given class memberships and to what extent misclassifications of dynamic failure status occurred. A random forest analysis performed on data from the Pennsylvania Coal Sample Databank cross-referenced with accident data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) determined that 7 parameters of the 18 examined exerted the most influence on results. Cluster analysis on data after dimensionality reduction resulted in a hierarchal clustering algorithm finding four clusters, with one relatively distinct dynamic failure cluster, and three clusters consisting mostly of control group members but with a small number of dynamic failure members.

The ability of wireless systems—e.g., voice communication, proximity detection, tele-remote operation, telemetry, etc.—to function satisfactorily (coexist) in the presence of other wireless systems is critical to the safety and health of mine workers. The failure of wireless systems to coexist could result in the delay, corruption, or outright loss, of critical data, voice, or video information. However, no mining-sector-specific regulations, standards, or guidelines exist to ensure the safe coexistence of wireless systems. This paper introduces the concept of wireless coexistence, implications in the mining industry, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) research approach to develop guidelines and recommendations to ensure safe wireless coexistence.
