As most of you have probably surmised from the title of my paper, I am here today to talk with you about the use of diesel engines in the American mining industry and whether or not the free choice to use such equipment will continue to be available to mine operators. Of course, I will present to you my prepared remarks, however, these remarks may be essentially academic in light of a news release, parts of which I would like to read to you. Washington, D. C., The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare today announced proposed new regulations to reduce occupational health risks to workers in the U. S. mining industries by requiring the removal of all diesel powered equipment from American mines by December 31st "While we do not have complete and conclusive information to quantify these health risks we feel it is prudent to undertake this restriction on the use of diesel powered equipment without waiting for the completion of studies that are currently underway to identify and quantify these health risks," said a Department spokesman. HEW has been concerned about the health risks of diesel emissions in the underground coal mines for some time and have investigations underway designed to conclusively demonstrate the nature and magnitude of any health risks. However, HEW has decided to proceed with these regulations without waiting for the final results of these investigations. Further, HEW feels there is sufficient probability that diesel health risks do exist in all mining applications and consequently, the proposed regulations will apply to all surface and underground mining operations. It goes on a little further and indicates that due to the necessity of finalizing these regulations without delay, a period of fifteen days has been provided to receive comments regarding these proposed regulations.

When Caterpillar announced that it had purchased Bucyrus for $8.8 billion, it was billed as the next great chapter in the history of mining. Surely, when the history books are written, it will be remembered as a deal that changed the face of the mining equipment sector, and it could well be a major milestone in the path toward autonomous mining in the future. In the short term, the deal is a clear indication that the world?s largest equipment maker is bullish on the mining sector. The purchase of Bucyrus allows Caterpillar to expand its mining interest to six product segments (underground, surface extraction, large mining trucks, surface material handling, hauling products and growth markets) with 16 product lines to serve the mining industry. But the commitment doesn?t end there. According to Steve Wunning, president of Caterpillar?s resource industries group, which includes Cat?s global mining division, the commitment to mining goes far beyond the acquisition of Bucyrus.

The Republic of Botswana, one of the newer countries of southern Africa, attained independence on September 30, 1966. It covers an area of about 225,000 square miles (582,000 square kilometers) which makes it slightly larger than France, or slightly smaller than Texas. It is bounded by Zimbabwe, the Republic of South Africa and Namibia, including the Caprivi Strip. Angola and Zambia are close neighbors. (Map 1). Botswana lies at the center of the southern African plateau at a mean elevation of 3,300 feet (1,000 m). It is a natural habitat for most species of African fauna. The rolling sands and extensive grasslands of the Kalahari Desert cover the southwest. The climate is sub- tropical. Summers, although tempered by north- easterly breezes, are hot, but mean maximum temperature seldom rises above 100°F (38°C). Winters are dry with wide temperature variations, which often give rise to frosts.

In the Spring of 1959 the Riverside Cement Company, a Division of American Cement Corporation, placed into operation at their Oro Grande California plant a new crushing-blending-reclaiming facility. This new facility, in conjunction with other modernization in the plant, has established a degree of automation and reliability on a-plant-wide basis which heretofore had not been attained in the industry. The blending and reclaiming facilities for raw stone and cement clinker at this plant represent not only the first computer programmed materials handling system of its type in the industry, but also the first installation of specialized equipment which was designed for high capacity, fully automated operations.

It has been suggested that we at the University of Arizona present a paper covering the origin, philosophy, and results of the College of Mines program in the field of computers and operations research. I have worked with the program since its beginning, and I will try to outline the developments as they have taken place. The formal development of the educational and research program in the field of Operations Research and Computer Applications at the College of Mines, University of Arizona, began in early 1957. During the year, the University offered its first formal instruction in computer programming. This was my first introduction to computers, and it did not take long to realize that this new tool had a potential that could be profitably utilized by the mining industry. In March 6f 1957, the University Computing Center began operations with its IBM 650 computer. This machine was the only computer of this size in the local area at this time, The first programming effort was in machine language and the programming cost could only be justified for repetitive-type of problems. The progress in the computer field moved very rapidly and with the development of the many compiler and assembly programs and the addition of sub routines to the computer library, the scope of problems that could profitably be investigated by computers expanded rapidly.

"Lithium is a soft, silver-white alkali metal with atomic number 3. As of 2015, the end use of lithium was estimated to be as follows: lithium-ion batteries (35 percent), ceramics and glass (32 percent), lubricating greases (9 percent), air treatment (5 percent), continuous casting mould flux powders (5 percent), polymer production (4 percent), primary aluminum production (1 percent) and other uses (9 percent) (Jaskula, 2014). Lithium is found in brine lake deposits containing lithium chloride and in hard rock pegmatite deposits. It can be sold in a range of product types; as mineral concentrate, brine, compound (lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide) and metal depending on its intended end use (Goonan, 2012; Jaskula 2014).In the 1990s, the United States and Chile were the largest producers of lithium globally, primarily from brine operations (Ober, 1994). Most of the lithium compounds produced during this period were consumed in the glass, ceramics and aluminum industries. In the 1980s and 1990s, there were two major lithium operations in the United States: brine operations at Silver Peak, NV and a spodumene mine and lithium carbonate/lithium hydroxide plant in Kings Mountain, NC. The Kings Mountain operations ceased production in 1991 and were eventually dismantled in 1994. Brine operations were also active in Argentina and Chile, while the largest lithium ore deposit in the world was operated at Greenbushes, Western Australia. During this period, it was predicted that major shifts in demand for lithium would come from the success and widespread use of electric vehicles (Ober, 1994).Lithium is still produced from the brine operations at Silver Peak. But in more recent years, Chile has become the world’s leading producer of lithium carbonate from brines. Australia has maintained its position as the world’s largest producer of lithium mineral concentrate, the majority of which is exported to China to produce lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide (Jaskula, 2014).A spodumene concentrate was also produced at the Tanco Mine in Manitoba, Canada beginning in the 1980s through to 2010 when lithium operations were suspended due to fluctuations in the lithium market price (Martins et al., 2013)."

The disposal of the phosphate slimes produced by Florida beneficiation operations is perhaps the biggest single problem of the phosphate mining industry. This is an old problem which has not been solved and which is becoming increasingly severe. In a typical phosphate mining operation, the phosphate rock mined is initmately mixed with sand and clay, constituting what is known as matrix. During the beneficiation, the clay and other fine materials are separated usually at -150 mesh, and washed from the phosphate rock in a form of diluted slurry known as phosphate slimes. The quantity of slimes solids and their composition vary considerably with the location but usually represent from 25 to 35% of the ore mined. Because of the affinity that clays have for water, large volumes of water are required to separate the granular material in the matrix forming a dilute slime suspension (1.5 to 3% solids) of colloidal material, which settles very slowly, and thus requires immense impounding areas, which never becomes totally usable land. The solution to the problem expressed in the title of this paper might well be condensed into one word, AUTOMATON, But if I were to stop there, even though most of you might applaud, I am afraid that a one-word paper might not justify my coming to this meeting, So let?s explore the matter and try to learn if and to what extent the science of automaton can be applied to the problem of coal cleaning. In taking this approach we must, of course, by-pass the fact that plants In this Country and aborad have been automated to a greater or lesser extent. We will explore the matter from the beginning and not merely take the approach that because others have done it we can do it also. First, let us see just what is meant by automaton.

Lithium is a top-quality mineral in the energy market, with growing demand. It has many applications in medical, nuclear, and energy industries. The purpose of this article is to quantify and analyze the economic potential and projected global demand for lithium annually. It aims to determine Peru’s (specifically Puno) positioning in the global context in 2025 and 2030. The article also seeks to identify the main regulatory, environmental, and social challenges to sustainably exploit lithium in Peru. The study employs applied research (mixed approach), descriptive-correlational scope, and observational, crosssectional design. The methodology demonstrates the use of statistical techniques to model and make predictions about this energy-transition metal. Academic sources were reviewed to enable a comparative approach and projection into the future of lithium for development in the mining industry. In the last 10 years, lithium demand has grown, noting a 600% increase in the economy and projected annual growth of +26%. Exponential growth in resources is projected, where econometric, R-multivariable and R-linear models estimate that Peru could supply 1.5% in 2025 and 3% in 2030 of global lithium. Estimated growth of 5–15% in socio-environmental conflicts is projected with the start of lithium exploitation (Peru – Puno). The global potential of lithium demonstrates exponential growth. Lithium reserves in Puno - Peru would rank 13th between 2025 and 2030. It is necessary to establish a clear regulatory framework to avoid excessive increase in socio-environmental conflicts.

An ore zoning technique developed by Climax geologists during the past forty years has been used to contour drill-hole assay values on cross-sections for fourteen porphyry molybdenum deposits in western North America, including the Climax and Henderson orebodies. Detailed geological studies of these large, complex deposits are essential in determining ore controls, which are the factors most critical to the zoning of MoS2 assays and to conceptualizing geologic models. The technique provides a detailed representation of the size, shape, grade distribution, and geologic continuity of the individual deposits. It demands a disciplined approach and adheres to rigorous rules while maintaining flexibility for adaptation to widely varying geologic conditions. By defining the limits that guide and control manual, computer-assisted conventional, and geostatistical reserve estimates, it exerts a strong geologic influence on the estimation process. A combination of ore zoning and geostatistical analysis of molybdenum deposits produces a significantly more accurate, precise, and defendable geologic reserve estimate than other methods.

Sulfur removal from high sulfur coal has several objectives including: a) reduction of the atmospheric load that contributes to the problem of acid precipitation; b) reduction of ash, which contributes to decreased energy transfer in boilers, as well as ash disposal; and c) alleviation of the social and economic dislocations related to uneven geographical distribution of sulfur in coal reserves. Cost in relation to the value of refined coal will govern the development of an emerging coal refining industry. Estimation of the premium paid by power companies for coal with a low sulfur content is a good estimate of the value that will be added as the result of refining. Estimates of premiums paid in 1984 are $28.65/t ($26 per st) for reduction of total sulfur from 370 to 1% S and greater than $28.65/t ($26 per st) for removal below 170 sulfur.

"The successful commercialization of a pressure oxidation (POX) process for recovering metal values, including gold, copper, zinc, nickel and molybdenum, is the result of a carefully planned development program. The initial task involves developing one or more conceptual flowsheets, including the POX autoclave and downstream purification and recovery steps. A laboratory program is completed to determine the technical viability of the flowsheets, define the operating parameters for each step and provide information for an initial economic assessment of the process. The process is then confirmed during a continuous pilot plant program, providing engineering design data and other information for the commercial design. A well-thought-out development program has been shown to be critical for reducing the risk of commercializing POX processes. Experiences developing POX processes for refractory gold ores and copper concentrates are briefly discussed. IntroductionPressure oxidation (POX) has become a common commercial operation for processing sulfide-bearing feedstocks. These feedstocks include gold ores and concentrates; copper concentrates; nickel concentrates and mattes; zinc concentrates; and molybdenum concentrates. Drivers for the development and commercialization of POX processes include:• The high cost for pyrometallurgical processing of sulfide ores, much of which is attributed to environmental controls.• The motivation to implement safe and more environmentally attractive alternatives for sulfide ores.• The need to process increasingly difficult ores with complex mineralogy.• Improvements made over the last 25 years in POX equipment design and experience operating commercial POX plants.Although the capital and operating costs for commercial POX processing can be high, this technology is capable of rapid oxidation of most sulfides and arsenic minerals in the feed, with little noxious gases and environmentally stable iron arsenate and other iron compounds in the POX residue (Marsden and House, 2006).In POX operations, sulfides are oxidized to either sulfates or elemental sulfur in an autoclave at elevated temperature and pressure with oxygen gas. The inadequacy of our knowledge of the coal combustion process has long been recognized. This was expressed very well by Spicer and Finney (1). "The control of combustion processes in industry and the design of the equipment necessary for efficient burning to take place have always been very much branches of an industrial art rather than of an exact science. This has been especially true of the utilization of coal, a substance so hetrogeneous and complex in character that all too little is known about its chemical and physical composition.' During the past several years one branch of coal utilization, that of high temperature carbonization; has made significant advances from being an art into being an exact science. This has been accomplished by the development of petrographic techniques for identifying, measuring, and determining the thermal properties of the organic materials which affect the carbonization of coal and the correlation of this information with a pre-existing standard of coke quality, the stability index.

The presence of ultra-fine particles affects the separation performance of wet gravity separation equipment. Several studies have been undertaken to establish the maximum level of these particulates that can be tolerated by spiral separators and it has been found that unless the ultra-fine material is effectively processed, relatively low proportions in the ROM material combined with high feed rates can result in degradation in plant performance and/or excessive water consumption. The maximum level of particulate material in the process water has been determined by examination of separation performance of spiral separators under varying slime loading. This work has been conducted utilizing various feed sources and a robust ‘rule-of-thumb’ has been derived.

Of the halogens, the gold iodide complexes are the most stable in aqueous solutions. A series of experiments were performed to investigate the kinetics and mechanism of the leaching reaction between gold and iodide. Using a rotation disk technique, the effects of rotation speed, iodide and iodine concentration, temperature, pH and in the presence of different electrolytes were measured. Oxygen and hydrogen peroxide were also examined as oxidants in the iodide system. The first order reaction rate was found with respect to 13 and half order reaction rate with respect to 1-. The comparison of gold leaching between iodide and cyanide is also presented, in which a rate constant of about 2.6x10-9 mol/cm2? sec for 10-2 M I- and 5x10-3 M I2 was obtained. This value is close to that -for typical cyanidation. Cyclic voltammetry experiments were also performed to examine the electrochemical nature of the reaction which will be presented in part II of this study.

On April 10, 1958 a new 7500 long ton/day iron ore beneficiation plant went on stream producing an average of 3000 long-tons of high quality concentrate a day. Plant operates on two, 12-hour shifts is six days per week, The new mill end crust ink plant were built adjacent to the company's open pit dining operate on at Bomi Hills, Liberia. The mall is essentially a gravity concentrator employing crushing, and grinding to liberate the mineral values, followed by concentration in Humphreys spirals. The cleaner spiral tailings are re-ground and tabled to recover additional iron values. The interaction of soluble salt particles in their saturated brines is of interest from both a fundamental and practical perspective. The state of dispersion/aggregation of alkali halide particles as determined by optical microscopy can now be described based on non-equilibrium electrokinetic measurements for alkali halides. These results indicate that the sign of the surface charge has a significant effect on the extent of particle dispersion/aggregation. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is now being used to directly measure the interaction forces responsible for the stability of these alkali halide aggregates observed in optical microscopy studies. These experimental results can be explained based on the interfacial polar interaction theory. In this regard the nature of such particle interaction forces at high ionic strengths are examined to improve our understanding of these systems.

The oxidative degradation kinetics of chalcopyrite have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The obtained data are necessary for the kinetic description of the flash fusion process, which can contribute to the optimization of the smelting process in copper extractive metallurgy. Activation energy (Ea) evolutions of the involved processes have been determined by several isoconversional methods; in this sense, the chalcopyrite oxidation processes could be adequately described, among studied models (E1641–16, Ozawa–Flynn–Wall, Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose and Friedman), by the Kissinger–Akahira– Sunose kinetic model. Using this method, Ea and A values are found to be very dependent on the conversion. Under lower conversion levels, higher Ea and A values have been calculated with respect to that found for medium and higher conversion levels.

Coal is still a part of energy generation worldwide and has a significant role in the sustainable development of countries. The amount of shallow coal deposits is getting scarce, making efficient underground mining operations crucial for both local and global economies. In underground mining operations, longwall mining is a commonly utilized method to extract deep coal deposits. One of the leading engineering goals in longwall mining is increasing the efficiency of the system by investigating the effects of operational factors on equipment. This paper investigates the shearer performance for a longwall top coal caving operation by discrete event simulation that includes modeling the double-drum shearer, belt conveyors, stage loader, and armored face conveyors (AFC) to evaluate system performance by considering the amount of daily coal production of the shearer. As a result, the most influential factor on mine production is determined and a data-based framework is developed. This study suggests a framework for data collection, data analysis, and the interpretation of the operational data to evaluate the primary production unit’s performance. The models developed for the face coal extraction operations in a longwall top coal caving (LTCC) mine have a bi-directional cutting system and can be implemented in other operations readily.
