The abstract discusses the synthesis and investigation of polyacrylamide functionalized chitosan polymers (CS-PAMs) as selective depressants for pyrite in the flotation of galena and chalcopyrite from complex sulfide ore. The study employed response surface methodology (RSM) to model and optimize the flotation process, varying parameters like the degree of deacetylation of chitosan, weight ratio of chitosan to acrylamide, and CS-PAM dosage. The developed RSM models effectively predicted iron and lead grades and recoveries, while optimization showed optimal pyrite separation from galena and chalcopyrite using CS-PAM synthesized from chitosan with a high degree of deacetylation and a specific chitosan:acrylamide weight ratio.

Machine manufacturers’ recommendations on maintenance strategies of capital-intensive draglines are not always based on real data and therefore lead to losses from downtime. This paper proposes a preventive maintenance strategy for a dragline deployed in an opencast coal mine based on reliability-centered maintenance and failure-mode-effects analysis using real operational data. Reliability-centered maintenance replaced a cluster of critical failure components of the dragline while satisfying two specific conditions: (i) the components should be replaced at the earliest mean time to failure (MTTF) within the group and (ii) the time taken to replace all the parts should be equivalent to the maximum downtime within the group. Estimated threshold weightage factor identified twenty-six critical failure components for the preventive maintenance strategy, and clustering of components divided them into nine groups. In a group, the loss that is expected to occur by replacing some of the components before their failure, and the gain by reducing the overall maintenance downtime, has been explained through a cost-benefit analysis. The total net profit generated is calculated as US$200,178. This clustering activity also led to a reduction of annual downtime by 231 h, whose approximate market price as equivalent coal production costs $295,365.

The level of steel consumption per capita is one of the principal indicators of a country's standard of living. It is no coincidence that the materially advanced nations possess viable iron and steel industries to provide a reliable and economic source of steal for the manufacturing industries. No other metal is as dominantly important in manufacturing as steel. The blast furnace - steel furnace complex based on coking coal, ferrous scrap and iron ore - continues to be the principal steel-producing method. Less important is the electric furnace method based on scrap, In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the many direct reduction processes that are not dependent on coking coal but usually produce a product for further refining in steel furnaces. No matter which series of processes are used, iron ore is essentially the only source of virgin iron units. Thus, to such a vital and capital-intense industry as steel, access to a relatively inexpensive, long- term supply of iron ore is essential.

"Maceral separation is one possible technique to expand coking coal resources, either by increasing the blending ratio of non- or slightly caking coal or rationally utilizing the coking coal according to the different behaviors of macerals in coking. The success of maceral enrichment for a given coal using flotation is dependent on the differences in flotation kinetic rate among macerals. This paper presents the flotation rates and zeta potentials of the vitrinite-rich and inertiniterich maceral concentrates obtained from six coal samples of different ranks – from high-volatile B bituminous coal with mean random vitrinite reflectance (Rrandom) of 0.64 percent to low-volatile bituminous coal with Rrandom of 1.73 percent – using a float-sink procedure. The flotation results show that vitrinite-rich concentrates can be produced in tap water using froth flotation only with frother for the high-volatile B and A bituminous coal samples, but there was no good performance for the high-volatile C bituminous and medium- to low-volatile bituminous coal samples. The zeta potential results show that froth flotation could probably separate the high-volatile C bituminous coal samples well by adjusting pH, but there was no good performance for the higher-rank coal samples. IntroductionMetallurgical coke is used in blast furnaces for steel production and is produced by the carbonization of coking coal. Because caking coals are rare and expensive, they are often blended with non- or slightly caking coals. Considering the tight supply-demand situation for coking coal in China, it is important and urgent to develop highly efficient technologies for rationally utilizing and expanding coking coal resources (Mochizuki et al., 2013)."

Comminution is one of the fundamentals of mineral processing, requiring large expenditures to be made on capital equipment, installation, power and maintenance. The trend toward lower grades and higher operating costs, mean mining operations are becoming increasingly marginal. The challenge is to improve and more importantly, utilize crushing and milling technologies that provide for reduced capital and operating costs whilst providing increased unit efficiencies. The Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill presents such an opportunity by providing many of the cost savings and production increases required by its ability to produce a finer mill feed size and realize reduced energy consumption. This paper briefly describes the operation of the Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill and reviews its benefits towards improving the efficiency of crushing and milling operations.

This paper addresses strategic investment decisions when they are nested in a project development format where each project is implemented in phases and each phase is approved to move on to the next phase only if certain technical and economic requirements are met. This configuration is sometimes referred to as a ?Project Portfolio?. Mining companies maintain project portfolios in their exploration investment plan. This study proposes a procedure to best manage an exploration project portfolio including technical and economic uncertainties. The procedure may support decision makers in a simple and intuitive way, while maintaining the rigor and precision required by the rather large amount of financial resources typically called for by mining projects. The procedure was tested in a real case study of a gold mining company and its exploration projects portfolio. The procedure uses the following approaches: i) investment valuation methods under technical and market uncertainties based on Option Pricing Model, Real Option Theory and Option Space; ii) portfolio management and Stage Gate®1 method; iii) Monte Carlo simulation.

A ventilation research study was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and a cooperating trona mine in the Green River basin of Wyoming, USA. The mine operation uses the longwall mining method in trona bed 17, a commonly mined unit in the region. The longwall face length is 228 m (750 ft), and caving on the face occurred up to the back of the longwall shields. The mine is ventilated using a main blowing fan and a bleeder shaft. For this study, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas was released in two separate monitoring experiments. For the first experiment, tracer gas was released on the face, this test focused on airflow along the longwall face of the active panel. Face test showed the airflow patterns to be more complex than just head-to-tail flow in the main ventilation air stream on the active panel. For the second experiment, tracer gas was released 2 crosscuts inby the face on the headgate side, this test focused on gas transport in the mined-out portion of the same active panel. Gob test showed a pathway of movement through the front of the active panel gob that moved outby from the tailgate corner. The primary pathway of tracer gas movement in the active panel gob was towards the headgate and tailgate bleeders and out of a bleeder shaft. The rate of movement towards the back of the gob was measured to be 0.19 m/s (37 fpm).

The mineral kaolinite is one of the commonest minerals in the uppermost 10 m of the continental crust; ranking in abundance alongside minerals like quartz, mica, feldspar and calcite. Only very exceptionally does it possess all the necessary properties needed to make it worth commercially exploiting. The terms 'Kaolin' and 'Kaolinite' are derived from a locality known as 'Kau-ling', in Jiangxi Province, Peoples Republic of China; where samples of a white clay used by the Chinese to make porcelain were first obtained by European missionaries and explorers in the eighteenth century.

In 2008, the authors developed a methodology for identifying underground coal mines at high risk for major-hazard events. It focused on major hazard-related violations of safety standards associated with high-risk conditions. Later, using a sample of 103 mines with 2008 and 2009 data, injury measures and U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) citation data were combined into a safe performance index (SPI). The SPI was used to assess the relative safety-related risk of mines, including by mine-size category. In this paper, comparisons are made of SPI-associated, normalized safety performance measures across mine-size categories, with emphasis on small-mine safety performance as compared to large and medium-sized mines. Gentlemen, my subject today is glass reinforced plastics. By definition, this encompasses a wide variety of materials: at least a half dozen basic varieties of polyester, epoxy, and phenolic; virtually infinite compounding variations within the basic groups: literally limitless variations in the amount and the nature of the glass reinforcing. Complicating all of this is the fact that different modes of application of the same material fall appreciably alter' the product's general strength and suitability. These many, many differing materials are what we conveniently call "glass reinforced plastics" or, more simply, fiberglass". This common name is actually a large part of the problem when dealing with fiberglass materials. Far too often a specification is written calling for simply "fiberglass reinforced polyester', based on successful prior use of a polyester laminate. Such a specification is very nearly worthless since such tremendous variation is possible under it. Success of a laminate furnished under such a specification is entirely dependent on good fortune

In order to protect coal mine owners, operators, and lending institutions from potential environmental liabilities, responsible parties must maintain a thorough understanding of the environmental disposition of the property they control, and the ramifications of impending laws and regulations. The best way to accomplish this is to periodically conduct a Phase I Environmental Audit. The systematic approach of an audit will reveal areas of DOD compliance with SMCRA and EPA regulations which the coal owner and/or operator will be able to use to correct deficiencies and prevent the occurrence of conditions which could lead to permit block, fines, and ultimately reduced productivity.

In the event of a sudden nuclear attack upon the United States, it is imperative that vital command and control centers have a high probability of survival. One such vital facility is the North American Air Defense Command Combat Operations Center at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Known briefly as NOW, this installation when completed will be housed in large chambers excavated out of granite beneath the eastern slope of Cheyenne Mountain (Figure 1). The NORAD COC, a U. S. Air Force sponsored project, will serve as the primary collection and evaluation center for data concerning unknown aircraft, missiles, or space vehicles, which might bring destruction to North America. The data will be fed into high-speed computers and electronic equipment from outpost sources - radar, ballistic missile early warning stations and picket ships throughout the world. Electronically controlled display boards will make it possible to evaluate the tracking data instantaneously and to take appropriate defensive action1.

The phosphate formations of the Pliocene epoch were deposited along the coastal shelf of the eastern seaboard. The deposition of the phosphate is thought to be somewhat contiguous along the early shoreline, and the deposit can be more or less traced over an 800 to 930 mile path from the Florida Gulf Coast, near Ft. Myers, to the Pamlico Sound of North Carolina. This is illustrated in Figure 1. Three areas of commercial importance are currently being exploited from this extensive known deposit: 1 - The so-called ?Bone valley? in Central Florida (multiple operations) 2 - Hamilton County in North Florida (Occidental Corporation operation) 3 - Beaufort County in North Carolina (Texas Gulf Sulphur operation)

INTRODUCTION From its beginnings in the first decade of this century, flotation has gradually moved to a predominant role in mineral separation. There are several reasons for this, the continuing trend toward treat¬ment of lower-grade and more finely disseminated ores being the major one. Not only has this been true for sulfide ores to which the process was first applied commercially, but also for most nonsulfide ores as well. A second factor has been the broad applicability of the process with respect to particle size; it is effective from 8 to 10 mesh to below 10m. Finally, more so than for any other separation process, flotation has almost no limitations in separating minerals. Gravity, magnetic, or electrostatic processes are either applicable to particular minerals, or to a restricted number of mineral combinations. Flotation, on the other hand, can utilize the wide range of surface chemical differences among minerals, and an equally wide range of reagents. The recent availability of selective flocculation capabilities on a commercial scale as an adjunct to flotation should remove one of the limitations to the process in the very fine particle range. History Although flotation was anticipated in a 19th century patent to Haynes, its first significant industrial uses were in the early 20th century in Australia. According to Hoover,' the Pottter-Del-prat pro¬cess had a "measure of success" at Broken Hill's Block 14 mine in 1905-1906, and was definitely successful at the BHP Mine, where it produced 80,000 tpy of zinc concentrates. Both the Mineral Separa¬tion and the Elmore processes had early trials in Australia also, with both successes and failures. The first application in the United States was in 1911, when the Hyde process was used by the Butte and Superior Copper Co. on a zinc ore in Montana. By 1916 Hoover could list 46 applications to copper, lead, and zinc ores, mainly in the United States. Ten years later Taggart2 listed almost a thousand patents covering processes and reagents which with few exceptions laid the foundations for modern practice. Included were: sulfidizing of oxides; leach-precip¬itation-flotation; cyanides, sulfites, sulfides, and oxidants for selective depression of sulfides; starch, tannin, and glue as depressants; and xanthates, dithiophosphates, and oleic acid as collectors. Within an¬other 20 years, all of these were in commercial use along with amines for floating silica from phosphates, and synthetic frothers were com¬peting with pine oil and cresylic acid. In early June, Rio Tinto?s chief executive officer Tom Albanese said that he expected demand for iron ore, aluminum and copper to double in the next 15 years. Driven by global industrialization and urbanization, Albanese said during his company?s annual general meeting that to meet the demand in 2030, the additional supply required will be equivalent to replicating the iron ore output of Australia?s Pilbara region every five years, adding another aluminum production complex the size of Canada?s Saguenay every nine months and developing another copper mine the size of Escondida, in Chile, each year.

It is more than ten years since the first fully automated process using a computer started operation. Computer control has become common in a number of process industries, yet in spite of the tremendous incentives which ere present, there are only a few computer installations in the mining industry and none of these has announced successful control of a process. Recognizing that one of the reasons for this slow progress is the lack of adequate mathematical models of the various processes involved, the author's company started a project in the summer of 1966 to develop such models. It was early recognized that the existence of a major disturbance input, in the form of the mineral composition of the feed prevents most flotation plants from attaining a steady state condition. This makes the custom¬ary method of developing correlations from steady state plant data inapplicable and requires a more fundamental approach.

The town of Tayoltita, Durango is located at the bottom of the 2000 m. deep Rio Piaxtla canyon on the axis of the rugged Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range. Throughout most of the year access to the town is restricted to travel by mule or STOL aircraft. Silver and gold have been produced from epithermal veins in the north side of the canyon since 1757. During the last seventy-three years more than 4,588,000 kg. of silver and 76,322 kg. of gold have been produced from approximately 6,000,000 metric tons of ore. The Tayoltita mine is developed within a fault block bounded by normal faults which strike north-northwest and have opposing dips. A thickness of at least 1300 meters of late Cretaceous or early Tertiary volcanic rocks is exposed in the mine. These range in composition from andesite to rhyolite. Andesite predominates in the upper 750 meters of the section. The volcanic rocks were passively intruded by quartz-monzonite and andesite stocks during middle (?) Tertiary time. Mineralization spatially and temporally (?) related to the stocks occurs along the east boundary fault and in intersecting footwall fissures which strike east-west and northeast. Ore was deposited over a vertical range of up to 600 m. prior to tilting of the volcanic rocks 35 to 45° to the east. With few exceptions, the ore bodies are found within the lower 400 to 500 m. of the andesite. Argentite (acanthite), stromeyerite, jalpaite, electrum and native silver are the principal ore minerals. They occur in gangue composed of one or more of the following: quartz, calcite, bustamite, adularia, chlorite, and albite. Base-metal sulfides make up less than 1.5 percent by weight of the ore.

For the next few minutes, I will be discussing a product and category that many people laughed at for years. The product is cat box filiers or commonly referred to by the brand name KITTY LITTER. This product was introduced in 1947 by Ed Lowe using the name KITTY LITTER. From 1947 to 1964 the product was sold mainly through pet shops. Starting in 1964, the grocery trade began to carry cat litters. From that point, the cate gory began a solid growth trend. Particularly in the '7O's, cat litter has experienced the same kind of explosive growth that has characterized the entire pet market. For example, in the twelve months ending 9/21/79, cat litter unit volume grew by 15% versus the previous twelve months. The basis for this explosive growth is easy to comprehend. The cat population itself is rapidly expanding, reflecting the changing life- styles of Americans. As famiiies grow smaller, there is room for a pet. As apartment and con dominim living shrinks living space, a cat fills the human need for animal companionship more efficiently. Table I illustrates current cat litter market factors and projects major trends into the future to conclude that the cat litter market will equal $205MM in 1985. With this dynamic growth defined, it was imperative that a company such as Lowe's that was totally devoted to the commodity-priced products, evaluate the opportunities for added- value product differentiation. This process was started approximately four years ago with a search for new cat litter products and other new product opportunities.

The Los Bronces Mine and Concentrator, one of the three operating units of Compania Minera Disputada de Las Condes S.A. (an Exxon Minerals Co. affiliate), is located in the high Andes of East-Central Chile approximately 70 kilometers northeast of Santiago at an elevation of 3,650 meters above sea level. (Figure 1). Santiago, the capital city of Chile, is located at an elevation of about 500 meters above sea level and enjoys a very mild climate, similar to some areas of California. At the mine site, however, extremely heavy winter conditions prevail occasionally, with very heavy snow and the resulting snow avalanches endangering installations and people. At the same time, ideal skiing conditions are found at the nearby ski resort of Portillo and Farellones. Mount Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the western hemisphere is only about 55 kilometers further to the northeast of the Los Bronces mine.

Actually pelletizing and sintering, meaning both the formation of pellets and the hardening of them, are closely related to each other and to phenomena of nature. Figure. 1 This many-celled porous structure, frozen as it was at the fusion temperature and was being frothed by fast-moving gases, may be considered a typical piece of sinter. The same structures have been found in natural ores.
