"The Sangan iron ore mines (SIOM) in Iran are located in a remote area near the Afghanistan border. The SIOM deposit contains a geological resource of 1.1 Gt (1.2 billion st) of mostly magnetite with an iron (Fe) grade ranging from 27 to 61 percent. The Iranian government plans a stepwise development of SIOM in cooperation with private companies to satisfy the growing demand of the Iranian steel industry. Sustainable development is an influential ethical concept in mining all around the world. However, a successful realization of a sustainable development plan is not possible without a foundation on the core values and regarding the specific circumstances of the individual mining country. This paper introduces SIOM and describes sustainable development activities undertaken during its development. From the early stages, these activities have been realized to secure the acceptance of the stakeholders in the region. To evaluate their effects, indicators were filtered to the ones with the highest priority for the stakeholders. Moreover, Islamic values and Iranian regulations and their influences on SIOM were analyzed.Mining industry in Iran The Islamic Republic of Iran holds 68 types of minerals, including salt, sand and gravel, gypsum, chrome, lead, zinc, copper, coal, gold, iron, etc., with 33.5 Gt (37 billion st) of proven reserves and more than 51.7 Gt (57 billion st) of potential resources. Iran is ranked among the 15 major mineral rich countries (1). In accordance with the statistics published by Statistical Center of Iran (SCI), there were 5,316 active mines and 84,922 employees in the whole country in 2012-2013 (2) and, according to the statistics published by Central Bank of Iran (CBI) in 2011, the share of this sector in the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country was 1.2 percent (3)."

Further, on page 246, "The first area of study was the Josephine peridotite, now identified as an ophiolite terrane, located in northern California and south-western Oregon (Fig. 3). Here, it was felt that we could test the models shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and, if successful, expand the model and test it in other chromite districts in the US and around the world." My comments refer only to chromite deposits in Europe and the Middle East. First, I question that may chromite deposits occur in the idealized ophiolite section shown in Fig. 1. Second, although some podiform deposits (referring to morphology) have been important (Guleman, Turkey, for example), the stratiform deposits are of greater importance in tonnage and frequently grade. Examples include Nada, Yugoslavia; Bulqiza, Albania; Xerolivado, Greece; Saranovsk, Russia; and Abdasht, Iran. Reply by J.C. Wynn Mr. Hillebrand raises two issues that deserve a serious response. One issue is basically subjective and the other is ultimately political. First, the question of where (and how many) podiform chromite deposits are found in the idealized ophiolite section of Dickey (1975). The Dickey model is still perhaps somewhat controversial (Panayoutou, 1980), but our experience in the Josephine ophiolite of northern California (Wynn, 1980; and Albers, 1983) shows that the model works well there. Virtually all the chromite is found in dunite lenses in the tectonite peridotite (harzburgite). Since there are few complete ophiolites exposed in the world, the model will probably never satisfy everyone. The degree of acceptance is a function of any individual's subjective experience. Second, it is well known that stratiform chromite contributes more than 95% of the chromite reserves presently known in the world, and it could be reasonably argued that there is no point in exploring for or exploiting podiform deposits further. The title of the paper, however, was in part 'strategic minerals geophysical research'; chromite is considered a strategic and critical mineral of the US and many other industrialized nations. Stratiform deposits in South Africa and Zimbabwe account for most of the chromite reserves in the world. Unfortunately, experience in modern times with substantial price fluctuations and even resource cartels dictates the wisdom of identifying and maintaining a national chromite reserve, irrespective of the cost. An improved exploration methodology is an essential element in this strategic objective. "The mining industry tends to focus on very large numbers, whether it’s talking in terms of size of deposits, tons of material mined, the equipment used or the dollars spent. The numbers associated with mining projects are often in the hundreds of millions, but sometimes it’s the little things that can have the biggest impact.Take, for example, the Rosemont Copper Project in Arizona. Owned by HudBay Minerals, the Rosemont Copper project, when in production, is expected to be one of the largest copper mines in the United States, accounting for about 10 percent of total copper production with annual production expected to be 110 Mt/a (243 million lbs/year). However, the project is currently mired in a years-long permitting process. At the 2017 SME Arizona Conference in Tucson, AZ, Kathy Arnold, director of environmental and regulatory affairs for Hudbay Minerals, spoke about the project and the efforts to get it into production.She opened her presentation with the unfortunate news that her 2017 presentation would not be that much different than the 2016, 2015 or 2014 presentations she gave to the same conference. That’s because, as of Dec. 4, 2017, the project had been in the permitting process for 3,797 days, more than 10 years. The process began when Rosemont submitted its initial mine plan in 2006 and a revised one in 2017. The official start to Rosemont Copper’s National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) started in 2008.In June 2017, the project received its Final Record of Decision from the U.S. Forest Service, moving it a step closer to production. Yet it still faces stiff opposition from opponents while it works to secure the Clean Water Act Permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and to complete its final mine plan of operations.In her presentation, Arnold said the long process taught her many lessons, including approaching things with a different mindset. More than 130 pages worth of public comments have been collected over the years. The concerns expressed range from lighting issues to pavement to preserving land for a jaguar that was spotted on the property and named El Jefe.“A lot of things that people worry about seem to be small things, but we had to have a different mindset and be open-minded to the concerns,” Arnold said. “That is the commitment we made.”"

The Chino mine, concentrator, and smelter are located in Grant County in Southwestern New Mexico. Chino Mines Company is a partnership two-thirds owned and operated by Kennecott Santa Fe Corp., and one-third owned by MC Minerals Corp. (Mitsubishi) of Japan. The Chino Ore Body The Chino ore body is a widely varied deposit of rock types and contains intrusive stocks and sediments. The stocks contain chalcocite in a matrix of quartz, mica, and feldspar. Much of the feldspar is altered to clay. Some of these stocks are enriched with native copper. The sediments contain chalcopyrite associated with gangue minerals including magnetite, pyrite, garnet chlorite, and epidote. The contact of the stock and sediment is heavily altered to chlorite and clay. The stock ores contain economic quantities of molybdenite. The operating work index of Chino ore varies from 5 to 20 kwh/ton and averages 8.5 kwh/ton. The ore head to the concentrator averaged 0.81% copper and 0.010% molybdenum. Fifteen percent of the total copper head exists as nonsulfide mineralization.

It's 12:30 A.M. The day before had been a long one with problems ranging from proper application of shotcrete during cold weather and the follow-on precautions for curing, meetings with city officials to avert a job shutdown because traffic wasn't being maintained properly and finally a briefing before METRO's General Manager to bring him up to date on projections for meeting the operational date of June 1975. The phone rings and Officer Jones of the Park Police says "Mr. Lynch, this lady in the apartments overlooking the jobsite is complaining of noise and she wants the job shutdown". "Officer Jones, have you called the Project Manager or the Resident Engineer?" "Yes, sir, but there is no answer!" "O.K., Officer, I'll check it out." In calling the job, I can only get the guard, because the inspector is in the tunnel. After some time, the guard calls back and says he doesn't know the way down into the tunnel. I have since had a difficult time believing that one. In the interim I finally reached the Resident Engineer and explained the situation. And finally at 1:30 A.M. the inspector called the Resident to say that the Park Police stopped the job at 1:00 A.M. because we didn't respond promptly. A similar situation had occurred some 2 years previously. With great expectation, noise specifications were developed to correct the earlier situation that had occurred. These newly developed specifications were in force at the time of this most recent shutdown. Common sense would tell you that even though we had developed and implemented, we believe, some of the best and most practical noise specifications in construction practice today, we had not enforced them. Ventilation monitoring and control in mines are becoming an integral part of day-to-day activity for maintaining health and safety of miners. The authors evaluate potential real-time monitoring solutions for detecting and reducing diesel particulatematter, mine fires, and dust in situ, and examined the state-of-the-art use of ventilation monitoring and control in underground mines for detecting and reducing air contaminants to acceptable regulatory limit. Authors review relevant documents, including research papers, trade publications, and manufacturers’ website-based information, to identify research gaps. The authors also evaluate contemporary sensors (airflow, gas, dust, silica), control system and software technologies, data transport systems, Industrial Internet of Things, ventilation network simulators, and control devices to identify potential health and safety research gaps. In this study, examples of some mines from Canada, Australia, and the USA are included where ventilation monitoring and controls have been applied. Overall, this review identifies multiple challenges and research gaps in applying mine monitoring and control systems that could be the focus of future research, offering potential improvements to miner safety and health and financial benefits.

The last two decades have witnessed the resurgence in popularity of a century old tool for shaping laws and public policy – the ballot initiative. In recent years, anti-mining special interests have used the initiative process to secure voter approval of measures to ban modern surface mining for gold and silver. In November 1998, voters in Montana approved such a measure1 – the effects of which have been devastating to the mining industry in that state. In November 1999, anti-mining groups sought to place a nearly identical provision on the general election ballot in Colorado. They did not succeed, but the battle over mining’s future continues in the most important forum of all – the court of public opinion. The Colorado measure failed, in large part, because its proponents failed to convey a positive environmental theme. The mining industry also exercised early-on the rights available under state law for administrative and judicial review of the initiative, instead of relying upon the limited relief that would have been available had it waited until after the secretary of state approved the measure for the November election ballot. This article will summarize the ballot initiative process in Colorado and the proceedings that took place over Initiative No. 215.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority(WMATA) officially came into existence in February 1967 after the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia joined in a com¬pact pursuant to Federal creative legislation signed the previous November to build a regional rapid rail transit system called METRO (1). The parent organization was the National Capital Transportation Agency (NCTA), a Federal agency, subject to Federal statutes and regulations. Soon after the completion of the transition from NCTA to the new "non-Federal" status of the Authority, the Board of Directors of the Authority formally adopted procurement policies and procedures (2). These are specific statements concerning competition by formal advertising for bids or by solicitation of proposals for negotiation, contracting authority, approval of awards, awards of contract modifications, and processing of claims and disputes. These policies and procedures are silent as to Federal procurement statutes and regulations. But because of the Authority's origin, the sensitive nature of the compact among the several sovereign jurisdictions, Federal financing of two-thirds of the costs, and the resultant surveillance by the General Accounting Office over staff operations, the Authority's procurement practices follow closely Federal regulations adapted to WMATA's needs. This is an important point and is the foundation of contractual relations between the Authority as the owner and its construction contractors. Various constraints and flexibilities of this arrangement with respect to excavation and tunneling contracts will be pointed out in the ensuing discussions.

Cathodic Protection using impressed current was employed to reduce the wear of the mill wall during ball mill grinding. Wear rates were determined from weight-loss measurements made on four, I-inch diameter, mild steel coupons installed flush with the interior surface of the mill wall. Grinding tests were conducted on quartz, pyrite and quartz-pyrite mixtures at pH values of 4.6, 7.1 and 9.2. Cathodic protection was shown to reduce mill wear by 40-60010. An examination of the coupon surfaces using scanning electron microscopy showed that cathodic protection greatly reduced pitting corrosion. The presence of a sulfide mineral, such as pyrite, was found to increase the wear rate significantly, possibly due to galvanic interactions. It is also found that the wear rate is significantly higher than the sum of abrasive wear and the corrosive wear, due to a synergistic effect.

Such words as scarce, tight, and critical are used in regard to supply, leading to priorities, allocations, and possible rationing as make-shift attempts to satisfy demand. Almost every day a new type of shortage appears in another product area that has traditionally been taken for granted as being in perpetual abundance. The range of coverage extends from basic commodities such as oil, chemicals, cement, steel, copper, cotton, etc., through to machine tools, motors, bearings, electronic components, etc. , to those finished outputs that satisfy our fundamental requirements for food, clothing and shelter. Signs of the times appear in cancelled airline flights, unfilled lines at gasoline stations, no available home freezers, lengthy delays in any furniture deliveries, or to that little old lady seen walking out of a local supermarket clutching her hoard of twenty rolls of toilet paper. What a sad commentary to have to make about our Land of Plenty, so long the envy of the World for its material wealth -- and today with its initials "U. S." seemingly standing for ?Unlimited Shortages.?

Petro-diesel is a common collector for coal flotation, but the partitioning of diesel range organics (DROs) in process streams has not been widely studied. Preliminary research suggested that under normal dosing schemes total residual DRO contents in process waters should be limited to the sub-ppm water-soluble fraction (WSF). Further, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) should partition proportionately with DROs. The purpose of this study was to confirm these findings in laboratory flotation tests. Total DRO and specific PAH contents were measured in the waters associated with the concentrate and tailings streams. The results show that concentrate waters consistently had higher amounts of DROs than tailing waters. Moreover, the DRO contents in both streams generally increased with increasing diesel dosage. In line with preliminary research, DROs appeared to be limited to the WSF, and PAHs tended to partition proportionately with DROs. Under typical operating conditions, it appears that residual DROs should not present an environmental concern, but conditions should be avoided that allow significant overdosing of diesel.

Underground mine fires remain a concern for mine operators, posing a health and safety risk to mineworkers. In the last decade, the number of mine fires has decreased significantly; however, dealing with an unknown fire in underground mines can be a challenging task, which could lead to a hazardous condition for miners during an evacuation and rescue operation. A timely detection of a mine fire and monitoring its characteristics, namely size and location, are of great importance in reducing the risk of mine fire injuries. A new improved fire location algorithm has been developed and integrated into an Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) program by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This paper describes the new fire location model and presents the results of verification fire tests conducted at the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) facility of the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) using the collected AMS data. NIOSH is endeavoring to develop workplace solutions to improve detection of and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions in mines. The results demonstrate successful application of the improved fire location model and provide a useful tool for solving the problem of unknown fire location and reducing the risk of hazardous conditions.

Metallic droplets can remain attached to solid particles within liquid slags, resulting in production losses in several movement of solid particles in the liquid slag in a system, considering the attachment of liquid metal droplets to solid slag and on the resulting microstructures is investigated as a function of the velocity of the particles. For all wetting For the amount of metal attached to the particle, a clear trade-off was found between the speed of motion of the solid particle and the wetting regime.

It is sometimes said that "mines are made, and not found". I rather doubt that the exploration geologist would be overly sympathetic to that statement, and, of course, like most one-liners it is only partly true. As an explorationist who has been involved in building his own company over the last ten years, and by necessity has become a financier, I can appreciate what real grains of truth are in that statement, however. Because technical people are seldom taught financing in their basic training, and because they are usually not involved in it until at quite a senior level in their careers, the whole field often acquires a certain mystique. The engineering professions have too often believed financing is the province of the accountant or financial executive and just as we in the technical world are often too quick to bristle if the latter try to tread on our domain, the opposite can just as easily be true. Unfortunately, this is another example of a compartmentalized individual, and that is one thing the successful financier cannot be.

Investigaciones preliminares sugieren que bajo esquemas de dosificación normales los contenidos residuales totales de DRO en aguas de procesos deben estar limitados a la fracción soluble en agua (WSF por sus siglas en inglés) sub-ppm. Es más, los hidrocarburos aromáticos poli-cíclicos (PAH por sus siglas en inglés) debería segmentarse de manera proporcional con los compuestos orgánicos de diesel (DRO). El propósito de este estudio fue confirmar estos resultados en pruebas de flotación realizadas en laboratorio. Se midieron los contenidos totales de DRO Y PAH en aguas asociadas con los flujos o corrientes de concentrados y relaves. Los resultados muestran que las aguas con concentrados tenían de manera consistente mayores cantidades de DRO que las aguas de relaves. Es más, los contenidos de DRO en ambos flujos generalmente se incrementaban con el aumento de la dosis de diesel. De acuerdo con la investigación preliminar, los DRO parecían estar limitados a la fracción soluble en agua (WSF) y los PAH tendían a segmentarse proporcionalmente con los DRO. At the present time, the Florida phosphate industry is experiencing one of the worst marked slumps in its one hundred year history. Recent agriculture over-production has caused low grain prices such that the net income of U.S. farmers is expected to drop to its lowest level since the 1932 depression. The farmers' low income, along with high interest rates that preclude them from borrowing to purchase fertilizer, make the immediate U.S. phosphate market outlook bleek at best. The export outlook is also pessimistic due to world recession and the U.S. dollar's high exchange rate. In June, 26% of the phosphate industry's workers were laid off for an indefinite period of time. Despite the immediate painful slump, the long-term outlook for the industry looks good. Florida has enormous reserves and will continue to produce a third of the world's phosphate supply simply by making changes in the present system of mining, beneficiation, waste disposal and land reclamation.

The continuous need for infrastructure expansion forces the mining industry to develop underground structures into more sensitive and violent environments. When underground excavation enters into deep and high stress rock conditions, geotechnical designers find themselves faced with the difficult task of selecting a rock support system that will meet today's stringent requirements. Whatever support system is chosen, it is mandatory that potential rock movement be controlled. All this has intensified the development of safety systems and new, unique solutions which can enable construction companies to go both, further and deeper, without reducing the level of safety. To address these needs, Atlas Copco developed the Roofex® bolt, specifically designed to withstand large static and dynamic deformations under prespecified load conditions. The Roofex Rock Bolt acts as stiff support up to a designable load level before the sliding effect of the mechanical frictional system is triggered and allows highly controlled rock mass movement without loosing the support function.

Exploration of new resources and development of new equipment and designs are an ever changing facet of mining. New equipment to handle specialized operations is being developed and new techniques for its use explored. One such system is reviewed. Another is a potential system for handling the thinner stray coal seams between the more profitable thick seams. The availability of federal coal leases in the West is reviewed and current planning discussed. Gulf Coast lignites have been of much interest in recent months and are overviewed.

In the sintering of iron ores, the partial substitution of anthracite coal for coke breeze has been considered to be an effective way of reducing emissions and improvement in sintering properties. In the present study, the combustion characteristics of the anthracite coal and coke breeze were investigated and its influence on product sinter quality and sinter flue gases is being monitored. Pot trials are carried out with different coke breeze ratios, 0%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 100%. It is found that as the percentage of anthracite coal is increased from 0 to 100%, the sintering time decreased from 24 to 20 min, and the productivity increased from 2.25 to 2.60 t/h/m2. Up to 60% anthracite coal substitution Tumbler index (+ 6.3 mm%), Product yield (+ 5 mm%), and fines generation (− 5 mm%) is found 62.29%, 85.17%, and 15.33%; moreover, hematite ( Fe2O3), magnetite ( Fe3O4), calcium ferrite phases ( CaFe2O4, CaFe3O5), and Silico ferrite of calcium and aluminum (SFCA) are major mineral phases found during microstructural analysis of product sinter. Rio Tinto Coal Australia (RTCA) developed Meandu Mine in Queensland, Australia in 1983 to supply thermal coal to the adjacent newly constructed Tarong Power Station (TPS). In designing the mine, RTCA selected Meandu?s best economic reserves for a 25-year life based on station owner Tarong Energy Corporation?s (TEC?s) estimated life for TPS. That 25-year plan changed dramatically in the early 2000s when TEC approved life extensions to TPS?s four existing units plus construction of a fifth unit. After reviewing Meandu?s remaining reserves, RTCA decided the nearby Kunioon reserve offered the more economic option for maintaining deliveries beyond 2010. Those plans changed yet again in 2007 when TEC chose to purchase the Meandu Mine and nearby reserves rather than extend RTCA?s contract. TEC then selected Thiess Pty Ltd (Thiess) to continue operating Meandu until the new mine at Kunioon could be developed.
