Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and chemically precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) have become important mineral-based commodities in recent years. GCC manufacturing generally requires high purity and high brightness deposits of marble, chalk or limestone as the stone source. PCC usually uses limes made from lesser quality limestone deposits. GCC products have a wide span of particle size, with a d50 size ranging from sub micrometers to as large as several inches such as those used in landscaping. PCC products are typically limited to less than 10 µm (1,250 mesh). Each PCC product has a narrowly distributed size range. GCC and PCC products tend to have higher levels of whiteness com-pared with other traditional filler and extenders, such as kaolin and talc. Published statistics of GCC production volume often vary due to the exclusion of certain size range GCC products. According to Roskill’s latest estimate, world GCC capacity was believed to exceed 56 Mt (62 millionst) during 2004 for all grades.

Metal removal kinetics and metal ion selectivity in ion flotation were studied from a thermodynamic perspective. Surface tension data could be used with the Gibbs adsorption equation to quantitatively predict the metal ion removal kinetics in alkylsulfate-Cu systems. However, surface tensions predicted cation selectivity coefficients in the sodium dodecyl-sulfate (SDS)-Cu-Ca and SDS-Cu-Pb systems rather poorly, although the predicted order of the selectivity (Cu2+<Ca2+<Pb2+) was correct. Another thermodynamic selectivity model, which used the Grahame adsorption equation and a geometrical analysis, predicted cation selectivity coefficients that agreed very well with experimentally measured values.

Because of the lack of a universally accepted definition or standard for RCA, we are left to our own conventions in the marketplace as to what is most ?effective? or a ?Best Practice? for our own facilities or organization. This lack of uniformity in the application of RCA produces an equal lack of uniformity in the measureable outcomes of RCA on the bottom-line from site to site and industry to industry. What is the definition of success for an RCA? Is it regulatory compliance? Is it some quantifiable measure of bottom-line performance? Is compliance and bottom-line performance the same thing? Can we measure the ROI we receive by doing compliant RCA? These questions must be adequately addressed if any definition of RCA is to be effective on the bottom-line. Like our various Corporate Vision and Mission Statements, what would be our Vision and Mission for RCA? When pondering the answer to this question, we should consider: ? What Key Performance Indicators will the Success of RCA be Linked to? This provides a direct correlation to the corporate dashboard and therefore garners support for the RCA effort when implemented at the sharp end. Not until we know what KPI?s will effectively measure our maintenance and reliability objectives can we begin to establish which opportunities will afford the greatest returns1. ? What Bottom-Line Metrics will be Tracked to Measure the Effectiveness of Our RCA Effort? Will it be increased production, profitability, regulatory compliance, etc.? Will it be decreased injuries/fatalities, claims, customer complaints, risks, etc.? We should be specific about these metrics and their correlation to the metrics on our corporate dashboard. ? What Will Trigger an RCA Investigation? Normally companies will establish quantifiable thresholds to be surpassed before an RCA will be conducted. Examples may be an OSHA recordable injury, a failure event in which production losses exceed $250,000, an equipment failure in excess of $50,000 or a regulatory violation. This is the norm. However, we should realize this is using our RCA skills totally on a reactive basis. High Reliability Organizations (HRO) strive for proaction and they also use RCA proactively. Why can?t we use RCA to analyze why unacceptable risks from an FMEA are so high? It is perfectly applicable yet rarely implemented in this fashion.

A sustainable coal industry needs to achieve a number objectives concerning mainly with superior utilisation of deposits and improved environmental performance. Modern quality control systems, which are greatly based on the on-line analysers, play an important role in achieving sustainability targets. This paper discusses the testing and application of on-line ash analysers installed in the Ptolemais and Megalopolis lignite mines in Greece and examines the possibility of using this type of analyser to control blending and homogenisation operations. The effect of the accuracy of on-line analyser to control process, when used for the characterization of low rank coals with complex and variable composition, such as greek lignites, is examined.

Design and construction of the Epping to Chatswood Rail Line tunnels in Sydney, Australia required an innovative approach to define hydrogeological properties of the Sydney Hawkesbury Sandstone and provided an insight into the hydraulic behaviour of fractured sedimentary rocks. To meet restrictive water inflow and infiltration criteria both the pre-treatment of zones of fractured or highly jointed rock, and waterproofing using an interior spray on membrane for the finished drained tunnels and stations was required. Methods typically used to address the interaction of groundwater and tunnels in the Sydney Basin are demonstrated by case histories from major design-build tunnel projects.

This paper describes the basic requirements for the utilization of belt air to ventilate working sections at remote locations in relation to the main fans. It highlights the risks involved, potential problems, and the provisions that must be followed by mine operators for the safe use of belt air. The paper also presents a brief review of the current regulations, conveyor belting tests, atmospheric monitoring system requirements, and the experience gained by mine operators to utilize the belt entries to ventilate remote working sections or areas where mechanized equipment is being installed or removed. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations with respect to the utilization of belt air and the composition of belt material in under-ground coal mines.

The study evaluates the hydrological behaviour of exposed and covered waste rock dumps. The objectives were to determine the major factors influencing unsaturated flow in waste rock dumps and covers, and to improve the in-situ, laboratory and numerical modeling characterization methods. Using material properties obtained from in-situ and laboratory tests, waste rock dumps of different configurations, with and without covers, were modeled. It was found that a properly designed “Store, divert and release” (SDR) cover allows most of the water to be diverted downslope and discharged outside of the waste rock dumps. The SDR cover seems to work efficiently even in extreme storm events. The numerical modeling results show that the unsaturated hydraulic properties (e.g. air entry value and water entry value) of the materials largely control the infiltration of water into waste rock dumps.

In 1992, a detailed inspection of the Southfield Sewer revealed a reach of approximately 0.8 kilometers in length, located directly below the freeway lanes, which was severely distressed. Failure of this section of the sewer would result in the closing of the busiest roadway in the state as well as the potential backup of sewage into homes and spilling into nearby surface waters. As such, repair of the distressed section required development of a procedure that would not jeopardize the conveyance of flow through the existing sewer nor impede travel on the overlying freeway. Based on these constraints, the DWSD and NTH team developed a repair concept that entailed the mining of a new, 3.05-meter (10-foot) diameter bypass away from the traffic lanes. The new bypass section was connected to the existing sewer, up stream and down stream of the distressed area, using a “top down” construction approach, that required only minimal freeway closures during weekend periods. This paper, prepared jointly by the Owner, Consultant and Contractor will describe existing conditions, design considerations and construction methods.

Design and implementation of a roof bolting plan requires reliable geotechnical information of strata, such as rock strength, and locations of interfaces and voids/fractures. The drilling parameters obtained during normal roof bolt installation cycle provide a fast and economic way to gather information on the geological structure within the bolted horizon. The purpose of this research project is to develop a method for identifying the geological features in the mine roof strata based on drilling parameters of roof bolter. The criterion for void/fracture prediction has been developed and proven valid. This paper focuses on the estimation of the strength of roof strata by using drilling parameters. Based on the results of a series of underground and laboratory tests, feed pressure is found to be the most sensitive parameter when the strength of roof strata changes. Moreover, it was also found that both penetration rate and rotation rate have obvious impact on the magnitude of feed pressure. Based on these findings, the criterion for the estimation of roof strata strength has been developed using the relationship among feed pressure, penetration rate and rotation rate and implemented in MRGIS.

The main train station of Leipzig in Germany is currently being upgraded from a head station to a partially thru station. In order to achieve this, significant ground improvements are necessary. Soil freezing for example is used to create the excavation box retaining walls. The freezing works will be carried out from two tunnels with an inner diameter of 2.4 m (~ 8ft). The tunnels were constructed by the pipe jacking method. The cutter head of the machine was equipped with discs and scrapers. Driving and excavation was carried out using a bentonite supported face. Due to the small arrival shafts, the machine had to be lifted out in components. The essential limitation of settlements during the drives was achieved even better than expected.

The discussion will highlight the implementation of the Codes to date, risk management principles embodied in the Codes and the use of risk registers as a projectmanagement tool and the management of risk.

The Shiloh Church deposit is a very significant molybdenum occurrence in an ususual, perhaps unique, geologic environment. Work done to date indicate that several million tons of "ore" may be present, occurring as a matrix in limestone and dolomite breccias. Mineralized rocks cored to date are at or near the surface and the deeper resource potential has not been tested. The prospect is located in Polk County, north- western Georgia (Fig. 1). The "ore zone" was outlined by North American Exploration, Inc. (NAE) using geochemical prospecting techniques. Extensive geological work, including core drilling, has been conducted on the properties, together with geochemical and geophysical surveys. The geology, geochemistry and geophysics of the prospect are discussed. It is hoped that these data can be used to formulate exploration programs in similar terranes located elsewhere in the eastern U.S.A.

When considering all the aspects of a viable mine plan, it is important to estimate the accurate cost of mine ventilation, which varies as a function of airway dimensions, fan selection and ventilation network. Optimization of the overall elements of ventilation design can lead to very significant cost savings when capital and operating cost savings are considered in combination. This paper will describe a methodology, whereby ventilation costs can be minimized by optimizing the ventilation aspects of mine design and fan selection, by providing a brief description on ventilation theory and the factors which affect ventilation operating and capital costs.

Introduction Most high purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz, generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found that is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh&apos;s hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies, Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco Inc., mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, IL. Both companies mine from various locations within a 10-mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Co. mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, AR. Geology The southern Illinois white tripoli area is on the southern flank of the Illinois Basin. The commercial silica zone is a facies of the Clear Creek chert of Lower Devonian Age. To the north, where it occurs deep in the basin, the Clear Creek is a siliceous limestone. In the mining area, thin overburden has allowed access by surface ground water, which has leached away the carbonate content and left a quite pure silica residue. Fossils characteristic of sea bottom deposition, such as brachiopods and trilobites, are occasionally encountered in mining. The structure of the mining area is poorly known, due to infrequent outcrops. Strata in most mines are inclined at dips of 5° to 20°. There appear to be occasional high angle normal and reverse faults, but these are seldom of any significance in mining. The friable white silica zone mined in the Clear Creek chert is overlain by dark brownish-red chert and siliceous shale. Exploration drilling to date has not encountered the base of the microcrystalline tripolitic zone. Chemical content Leaching by ground water solution has removed virtually all the carbonate from the original siliceous limestone. Impurities encountered are red to yellow iron oxides, aluminous clays, and occasional black manganese oxides. The silica has no detectable formula water. A typical chemical analysis and physical properties are listed in Tables 1 and 2. Mineralogy and crystallinity Southern Illinois friable tripoli appears amorphous under the polarizing microscope. No crystal structure and only occasional, vague, patchy anisotropism is evident. However, the material gives an excellent quartz X-ray diffraction pattern. Traditional methods of project procurement of have remained virtually unchanged in the U.S. infrastructure construction industry for more than 50 years. The traditional method, Design-Bid-Build (DBB), uses a two-step process that separates planning and design from construction. Design is generally done by the public agency and their consultants and the subsequent construction contract is procured from the private sector, almost always by a “low-bid” approach. This method has worked well for many projects, delivering quality work for the lowest bid price. This is particularly true for those projects where the work, and the public agency’s management procedures, are well understood by the contracting community and there is relatively low uncertainty in the work or conditions, particularly geotechnical conditions for underground construction. However, concerns exist with the DBB process. It is time consuming because all planning and design work must be completed prior to beginning any construction work and it is of concern for complex or large projects, plus those with significant risk, where the separation of design and construction, in conjunction with pressures resulting from the low-bid environment, often result in substantial cost and schedule increases. Frequently, these increases occur in a non-productive, inefficient, adversarial work environment leading to claims, disputes and costly litigation (Quick 2002).

The authors of this paper have a combined construction experience of 70 years. They have served as engineers and managers on projects throughout the United States and Canada. Approximately 50 shafts have been sunk under their direct and daily participation. Several shafts have been selected from each of their experiences and have been briefly summarized here. SHALLOW SHAFT SINKING Sinking shallow shafts in highly urbanized areas adds an additional set of problems to those encountered in normal sinking operations. During the time between July, 1975 and early 1981, a series of shafts were sunk for The Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority. All of these were located along the "A" line, starting soon after the route departed from its path along Connecticut Avenue, proceeding to Wisconsin Avenue and then along Wisconsin Avenue to the city line at Western Avenue. (See WMATA System Map, Figure 1) The first three shafts were subcontracted from Morrison-Knudsen & Associates, Contract A9a, in July, 1975. INTRODUCTION The City of Phoenix, Arizona is located in the Phoenix Basin watershed which is prone to flash flooding several times each year. The runoff from these storms moves from the mountains in the north to the Salt River in the south. An extension of Interstate Highway 10 (1-10) will pass through the city east to west to form an Inner Loop through the downtown business district. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The I-10 Inner Loop extension will be a depressed roadway which would intercept the surface drainage of the Phoenix Basin and separate the watershed into two regions. To prevent flooding of the depressed roadway, runoff storm water collected from the northern half of the drainage area will be conveyed beneath the roadway to its natural outlet at the Salt River. A conveyance system composed of pressure tunnels beneath the city, shown in Figure 1, was proposed to achieve this goal . Table A presents the prominent features of each of the tunnels. This paper will describe geologic and engineering parameters specific to Phoenix which were used in the design of a series of tunnels to convey storm water from the I-10 Inner Loop to the Salt River. The design of tunnel initial and final support is described along with support and construction methods used by the Contractor.

The East Side Access (ESA) project is the largest underground rail infrastructure project under construction in New York City, USA. The Manhattan segment of the project is to be mined through rock and consists of 4.1 miles of Tunnel Boring Machine tunnels for track work and mined excavations to house rail switches, air plenums, and other rail facilities. This paper considers different methods for concrete lining, such as the use of fixed forms, adjustable forms, and pneumatically applied shotcrete. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed and the basis for considering one over the other are illustrated. Further discussions on design development and preparation of documents to facilitate quality and constructability in the field are presented.
