INTRODUCTION Truck haulage of muck in underground mining operations has been in use around the world for many years. From the late 1.950s into the early 1970s, haulage by means of load-haul-dump (LHD) units challenged haulage by means of trucks, and, to a large degree, LHD units dominated the trackless concept of moving mate¬rial underground. However, beginning in 1975, the emphasis began to shift back to the use of trucks, with LHD units assuming the secondary role of loading the trucks. Over the years, several manufacturers have been offering trucks with capacities ranging from 4.5 to 45.4 t (5 to 50 st) and with features that specifically address the constraints of underground operation. TRUCK TYPES Three different types of trucks are available for use underground, namely the tip dumpers, telescoping dumpers, and push-plate dumpers. The following para¬graphs describe each of these three types. Tip Dumpers Tip dumpers are designed to lift the truck box, using gravity to dump the load out the rear of the box. The primary application of these trucks is in the haulage of muck to the surface. However, these trucks also may be utilized underground, if a chamber is provided to accommodate the raised truck box at the dumping point. Fig. 1 illustrates a four-wheel drive truck with a 10.0-t (11-st) capacity; this truck is only 1.9 m (6.25 ft) wide and is designed specifically to follow narrow and winding vein courses. Fig. 2 illustrates a two-wheel drive tip dumper with a 24.5-t (27-st) capacity; this truck operates on 12% grades with firm dry surfaces and in modes both loaded-up and loaded¬down. Telescoping Dumpers Telescoping dumpers specifically address the constraints imposed by low back heights, and they represent an optimization of compressed envelope size with maximum payload capacity. Figs. 3 and 4 illus¬trate a typical telescoping dumper with a capacity of 18.1 t (20 st). Fig. 3 shows the box in position for carrying the load, and Fig. 4 shows the same truck with the box in the full-dumping position. Fig. 5 illustrates the loading and dumping cycles. Fig. 6 illustrates an approximation of how an LHD unit with an eject-o-dump (EOD) bucket would be used to load over the rear of this type of truck. Fig. 6 shows a low-profile telescoping truck in the first stage of loading, with a 6.8-t (7.5-st) LHD unit equipped with an EOD bucket. A loader with a smaller capacity and a narrower bucket would allow the bucket to fit inside the truck box and would achieve an even lower loading height than that illustrated. Gen erally, an LHD unit equipped with an EOD bucket and teamed with a telescoping dump truck can be used with a lower back height than could any other front-end loader and truck team. Push-Plate Dumpers Push-plate dumpers are similar to telescoping Bump¬ers, except that they do not have the two-stage box. Instead, push-plate dumpers utilize a single push plate to discharge the load out the rear of the box. Gen erally, these units are limited to payload capacities of about 9 t (10 st). Fig. 7 illustrates a typical push-plate dumper.

Recent research efforts have shown have shown selective solvation extraction of a gold cyanide ion-pair complex from alkaline cyanide solution is possible with organic phosphorus esters. These alkyl phosphorus esters such as tributyl phosphate (TBP) and di-n-butyl n-butyl phosphonate (DBBP) can selectively load gold to rather high levels, even in excess of 30 gpl. However, traditional stripping techniques are not particularly effective. In this regard, gold recovery by direct electrolysis of the organic phase has been found to be an interesting possibility. Further, the rate of direct electrodeposition from the organic phase can be improved significantly by using an aqueous/organic mixture. Direct electrodeposition of sheet gold from loaded DBBP was successfully accomplished at a current density of 8x10 4 amp/cm2 and 55°C from such a two-phase mixture with the aqueous phase as the continuous phase. No appreciable degradation the DBBP was found after 5 cycles of extraction and, electrodeposition. Finally, the applicability of the process strategy for an industrial situation was demonstrated by the successful treatment of waste gold cyanide electroplating solutions.

Techniques utilized to incorporate geological data in computer modeling and ore reserve estimation have undergone considerable evolution during the past fifteen years. Computer analysis and evaluation of two precious metal deposits are presented as examples of innovative computer techniques developed at Asarco. The first is a gold deposit occurring in a steeply dipping Pre-Cambrian greenstone sequence. The second is a manto-like manganiferous silver deposit occurring in a relatively flat sequence of Late-Paleozoic sediments. In both deposits, four sub-horizontal zones of geological influence are evaluated.

Non-ferrous smelting industry in Japan often had the severe problems about the over production of sulfuric acid. There has been such a closed relation between amount of sulfuric acid from non-ferrous smelting industry and the products of copper, zinc and lead metals that the production of one ton of copper accompanies three tons of H2S04. When the proper balance exists in both markets this situation certainly brings bigger profits. In Xining and Metallurgical Institute of Japan the research commitee concerned with the fixation process of sulfur in non-ferrous smelting industry was established in 1977 and continued the activity for four years untill 1981. This paper will introduce some of the activities involved in the report published by the committee.

The potential for recovery of enriched uranium from spent nuclear fuel which has been consolidated into a nuclear waste form was explored in the studies reported here. The waste form of interest is iron-enriched basalt (IEB)--a silicate-based, fused-cast ceramic. IEB samples were prepared containing fuel assembly materials that simulate the core debris of Three Mile Island Unit II;1,2 the nominal composition of the consolidated waste form is given in Table 1. Ore Types The IEB samples, or man-made uranium ores (MMUO), are in two different mineralogical forms. Each MU0 was made by melting the constituent materials and holding at about 1500°C for 1 h. The MMUOs were then heat treated to control crystallization and crystal growth and then cooled to room temperature.

Studies of the northeastern Mississippi bauxites were initiated primarily for the purpose of ascertaining the quality and quantity of the ore. Subsequently, this ore was found to have a rather dubious economic value as was previously suspected but never established in earlier economic reports (1, 2, 3). However, the quality of ore was found to be higher than previously thought. Even though the ore bodies were determined during the early stages of this study to be too thin, small and widespread for commercial production a continuation of the study was not abandoned. On the contrary, the present investigation was intensified concentrating less on the economic application and more on stratigraphy and genesis. Considering the ever increasing demand for aluminum products the northeastern Mississippi bauxite district which includes portions of Tippah, Benton, Pontotoc, and Union Counties may soon become, in spite of inferior quantities of ore, an attractive area for bauxite production. Presently, however, the meager quantity of ore discourages exploitation. On the other hand, these northeastern district bauxites are facies of more extensive units of lignite bearing high aluminum clays, and considering the advances in aluminum extraction from clay these clays may in the future beckon mining interest. The bauxite of the northeastern Mississippi district, mapped as a part of the Betheden Formation (4). has an outcrop trend along the county lines of Tippah and Benton Counties and the extreme western portion of Union and Pontotoc Counties. INTRODUCTION The requirements of mine ventilation demand the constant attention of the mine operator. Just as the physical mine structure changes with time, the ventilation requirements of a particular mine change considerably from season to season and even from day to day. No ventilation system can remain adequate indefinitely; and all systems require monitoring and adjustments to achieve proper ventilation. Instead of being given fore- thought and planning, mine-ventilation systems too of- ten are erected hastily, merely to correct an already un- healthy situation. The usual result is an inefficient and costly system that, in some instances, may prove in- effective in providing fresh air to the point of need. The ventilation of mines is a combination of both art and science. The fluid that must be moved is in- visible; its properties change drastically with temperature, barometric pressure, and humidity; and the methods of measurement are not precise. In part, ventilation engineering must rely upon the art of good industrial ventilation experience and sometimes even the trial-and- error method. However, the properties of air can be determined with relatively inexpensive equipment; with some care, measurement accuracies within 5% of the actual values can be obtained. Thus the art of ventilation gradually is being supplanted by improved engineering practices. Although the direction of flow and the volume may not be predicted correctly by airflow equations in every situation, it is better to try to predict the behavior of a given ventilation before installation than to proceed blindly with a system design. When used with the discretion that comes from education and experience, the basic laws of ventilation can provide sub-stantial insight into the design of an air-handling system; and they can prevent wasteful or even dangerous designs from being installed. Since the mine operators who read this text will have varying amounts of exposure to ventilation theory, the basic laws of airflow and of mechanical ventilation are presented in the first section. The emphasis has been placed on the interpretation and use of fan characteristic curves that are supplied by fan manufacturers. Considerable information can be obtained from these fan curves, particularly when they are used with a graphic model of the mine, drift, or duct in which the fan or fans are to be installed. A few minutes spent comparing the various characteristic curves can help the designer obtain the correct fan for the job. However, the under- standing of a few fundamentals is necessary; and this text has been prepared to provide ample and understandable information in a "how-to" style. In subsequent sections of this text, more down-to- earth subjects will be covered, including the problems of air recirculation, relative merits of installing fans in series or in parallel, expected maintenance requirements (vibration, lubrication intervals, etc.), fan noise and some remedies, effect of an inlet bell on the fan per- formance, basic air-measurement techniques and equipment, and similar miscellaneous items. Although this text is not intended to be a comprehensive bible of mine ventilation, it has been prepared as a guide that provides some useful information to individuals responsible for the quality of the underground environment. Every person working underground is en- titled to the safest environment that can be provided within the limitations of existing technology and at a reasonable cost. 3-dimensional finite element modeling was performed to analyze the safety factors of stump pillars, 18 ft. x 18 ft., under a cover of 208 ft. using the Modified Drucker-Prager Theory. The results showed that they are safe. This was substantiated by underground observations. But the safety factors predicted by three commonly used pillar design formulae showed otherwise. This paper discusses the modeling details and anlyze the difference between 3-D FEM method and traditional pillar design formulae.

Shovels, trucks and repair bays for the trucks each play their role in the capacity of an open pit operation. It is therefore convenient to have a procedure for the capacity calculation which takes all 3 factors into consideration in a comprehensive manner. This can be done by means of a cycle model, earlier developed for the shovel-dumper circuits, when the repair facility with its number of repair bays is added as a superimposed service system, which the trucks visit at certain specified intervals. The calculation model transforms the mechanical availability of the trucks into their operational availability. The system's capacity in truckloads per shift and the trucks' operational availability of certain combinations of shovels, trucks and repair bays are shown.

Throughout the history of mankind, the principal use of coal has been to produce heat through combustion. The heat is used in many ways: to warm air space for our comfort; to provide heat or energy to power industrial processes, such as cement and steel production; and to produce electricity. Because it is our nation's most abundant fossil energy fuel, coal in the late 20th century is on the threshold of becoming a significant source for synthetic liquids and gas energy fuels for this country. This is made possible by conversion processes which can change solid coal into various synthetic gases and liquids. These coal-derived fuels are nearly identical to the processed fuels and chemicals provided by natural gas and crude oils, which presently provide almost all the petrochemical feedstocks and energy fuels needed for the residential, light commercial, and transportation markets. A revolution is beginning to take place, not only in the United States, but in many other countries with a return to a coal-based energy economy. Also, new combustion and conversion technologies which are compatible with national health and environmental goals are rapidly emerging. These technologies will allow coal's use to be expanded not only in its traditional markets, but also to supply markets held by natural gas and crude oil. With the worldwide decline in natural gas and crude oil reserves, coal is being-looked upon to meet the energy demand. Because of these new coal conversion technologies, coal will no longer be only a combustion fuel, but a valuable raw material for production of a variety of clean fuels and chemicals.

Silicon carbide (SiC) can be produced by heating rice hulls to elevated temperature, The product is a mixture of beta crystalline silicon carbide whiskers, particles and unreacted carbon. The silicon carbide whiskers are 0.5 micron in diameter and 50 to 100 micron in length and have been found useful for reinforcing metal and other composite materials. The carbon can be removed by combustion, but this makes separation of the silicon carbide whiskers from particles difficult and a high grade whisker product cannot be made. However, a clean high grade Sic whiskers product can be obtained from the pre-burned converted rice hulls using physical separation processes that are based on differential wetting. Recovery of Sic whiskers from the pre-burned material was found to exceed 90 percent. A modification of the froth flotation process developed during this study is now being used commercially to separate silicon carbide whiskers and particles and to recover a high grade whisker product.

Mineral processing plant operators are faced with the necessity to choose between many different possibilities for plant improvement. Only a few such possibilities, however, can be tested on the industrial site. Steady-state simulators make it possible to assess the effects of several different flowsheet modifications in a few days, thus helping the process engineer to make his choice implement the solution that seems the most appropriate and check it. The example described here is the crushing and grinding circuit of the Shila Gold Mine, jointly owned by CEDIMIN SA and BUENAVENTURA SA, in Peru. Several possible modifications for the purpose of increasing capacity have been simulated and the results assessed in terms of technical quality, investment costs and energy consumption. The best solution indicated by the USIM PAC simulator was implemented and gave a 20% increase in capacity with a pay-back time of two months.

Operators are often challenged with the management of water throughout the life cycle of a mine. High water levels can lead to physical or chemical instability of water-retaining structures. Operators need to predict changes in water levels to make timely operational decisions and plan for contingencies, particularly in remote legacy mines. A closed mine in northern Canada with no permanent on-site personnel had a simple water balance model that was effective for decades to inform annual water treatment operations. In recent years challenging water quality and more stringent effluent quality criteria has strained those treatment operations and led to more water being stored. Additionally, the region has experienced more precipitation and higher water levels, which have triggered emergency response activities. A calibrated probabilistic model was used to provide enhanced prediction capabilities and to identify key sensitivities in the water balance for monitoring. A several-year case study shows the value that this modelling tool provided for mobilizing personnel and performing response actions, particularly the inclusion of probability paired with forecasted pond water levels. Annual drawdown targets were subsequently established which provided more certainty in scheduling of annual treatment operations

"INTRODUCTIONProject-related studies showed that lab tests are a helpful tool for the planning of EPB tunneling and soil conditioning in cohesionless soils. This type of ground commonly represents the extended application range for EPB shields, which demands for a treatment with additives. Considering soil conditioning with foam, so far, approaches exist for the investigation of the foam quality and of the conditioning behavior of soils (e.g. (EFNARC GUIDELINES 2001 2003)), but not any standards for testing procedures related to soil conditioning. State-of-the-art research on the topic is and was conducted for example in Bochum (Germany) cf. (Budach 2012; Maidl 1995), in Lyon (France) cf. (Quebaud et al. 1998), in Oxford and Cambridge (Great Britain) cf. (Borghi 2006; Peña Duarte 2007), in Delft (Netherlands) cf. (Bezuijen and Schaminée 2001), in Turin (Italy) cf. (Borio 2010; Peila et al. 2013; Vinai 2006), and in Aachen (Germany) cf. (Vennekötter 2012). Additionally, applied science is reported by the tunneling practice and suppliers of conditioning agents. Although the research focus in all these and further studies varied, similar test methods and test series were applied. A standardization of essential properties and testing methods (setup and procedures) however did not take place. The results from laboratory testing can only function as index values for practice because in the studies, production and application of the conditioning agents mainly takes place under atmospheric conditions. Nevertheless, the tests enable basic understanding of feasibility as well as processes and interactions going on during soil conditioning. For recommendations for standardized and reproducible testing see (Budach 2012; Budach and Thewes 2015).The most extensive investigations on the flow behavior of soil-foam mixtures have been performed by using the slump test from concrete engineering, cf. (DIN EN 12350-2 2009-08), which originally is applied on evaluating the workability of fresh concrete. Although this test does not describe the actual flow behavior, it rather represents an index on the workability, very much experience exists with this test method. Besides others, the workability – or flow behavior – of the EPB support medium certainly is a major factor of influence on the properties of the material in the excavation chamber and thus, for effective tunneling with EPB shields, cf. (Galli and Thewes 2014). For a summary of various investigations on the workability of conditioned soils using the slump test and resulting recommended slump ranges see (Budach 2012; Vinai 2006). Thereof, slumps between 10 and 20 cm have been reported as suitable workability for EPB applications. However, there is actually not much known about the real flow behavior of soil-foam mixtures related to rheological properties such as the viscosity (?) or potential yield stresses (t0). These physical values are necessary for a realistic determination of face pressure, for the design of required torques, and for an evaluation of the material flow at different locations in the excavation chamber, in the screw conveyor or on the conveyor belt. To generate a linear pressure distribution at the tunnel face, as it is assumed a priori, a low-viscosity fluid is favorable, whereas in the screw conveyor, a high-viscous fluid is needed for a controlled pressure decrease. On the conveyor belt, yield stress plays an important role preventing deliquescence and spilling from the belt. Attempts in characterizing the actual flowing of soil-foam mixtures have so far only been made by few researchers, the application of rheometry is rare."

Sedimentary dolomitic phosphate ores are difficult to treat by flotation, and high-grade phosphate concentrates with high recoveries are difficult to obtain. The literature indicates that the reagents required for beneficiation of such ores are generally dictated by the nature of the gangue. In this paper, the optimum flotation parameters necessary for enhancing the grade and recovery of a typical low-grade dolomitic rock phosphate ore from Jhamarkotra, Rajasthan, are highlighted. The standard design-of-experiment (DOE) technique was used to obtain empirical models for both grade and recovery. The model equations were then used for optimizing the flotation parameters, including pH, percent solids, collector dosage and depressant dosage. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that a phosphate concentrate containing about 36% P205, with a recovery greater than 95%, can be obtained in a single-stage by the reverse flotation of carbonaceous minerals at the optimized conditions. It is common practice, and even legally required in many jurisdictions, to design two-lane haul roads in open pit mines to three and a half times the widest dimension of the haul trucks operating on the road. In open pit gold mines with high strip ratios, the road width has a significant impact on the economics of a design. It is possible to minimize the flattening of the highwall if the road width is reduced, assuming the width used is not needed to flatten the slopes for geotechnical purposes. With the use of autonomous haulage and pullouts, it may be possible to operate safely and efficiently on a reduced road width of two times the width of the hauling equipment.

PT Freeport's Mine in Irian Jaya, Indonesia uses a number of 500m long vertical ore passes to transfer ore from the open pit to the mill. The current tonnages moved are in the order of 125 ktpd and this will be increasing to 240 ktpd. This amount of falling rock generates high pressures in the ore bins, when ore feed is terminated the pressure is no longer constrained resulting in back blasting of materials and air up the ore passes. Three methods were tested to try and eliminate or reduce this problem; recirculation of the entrained air, widening of the orepasses and relieving the pressure of the back blast. The final method proved to be the most effective in the short term. As a long term solution the orepasses are currently undergoing widening.

Flotation recovery of molybdenite particles finer than 15 micrones sharpy decreases with decreasing size. A totally hydrophobic latex agglomerant (UBC-1), which was previously reported to be very efficient in agglomerating hydrophobic fine coal, has been found to agglomerate fine molybdenite particles. The agglomeration takes place only in the presence of MIBC which is commonly used as a frother in molybdenite flotation. Adsorption tests confirmed that MIBC is adsorbed onto molybdenite. The effect of the agglomeration on flotation has been studied by floating fine molybdenite from mixtures with quartz using the UBC-l agglomerant and the MIBC frother. A significant improvement in the flotation of fine molybdenite has been observed in the presence of the UBC-l agglomerant. The best results have been obtained around pH 5.5 which corresponds to the iso-electric-point of molybdenite.

Less than optimum production in mining always results when poorly blasted material is provided at loading points. More often than not the cause is due to blasting founds that fail to fully control and utilize explosive energy. In many cases the problem exists because too few blasters understand how blastholes actually break rock and recognize that blasting is a three-dimensional process in designing their blasts. To better understand how blasts can be more effectively designed the two major rock breakage processes are described. In addition, the respective contributions of the borehole and detonation pressures are defined as are the specific roles of the several important blasting design variables. The concept of stiffness as an engineering principle and its significance in blasting design is introduced for explaining the breakup of rock. Basic guidelines for affecting control over fragmentation and side effects like over-break are offered.

In order to clearly understand our process control system it is necessary to briefly discuss the various process control systems that were considered and why we chose our particular configuration. We considered Analog Systems, Computer Supervisory Systems, Computer Setpoint Systems, Direct Digital Systems and Direct Digital with Backup Systems. Our concept of these systems is illustrated in Figure 1 through Figure 5. We chose Direct Digital Control with Manual Backup because it had the greatest flexibility, ease of implementation and cost no more than a pure Analog Control System for one control concept. There would be no increase for a Direct Digital Control with Manual Backup System if the control concept were changed, while there could be considerable additional cost with an Analog System, if the control concept were changed.
