"Owing to the corrosiveness of the untreated brackish cooling water typically used for steel mills (and other environments), it is important to treat the water and monitor corrosion in such systems. Generally, corrosion rates are monitored with corrosion probes inserted into a pipeline or vessel. This has been standard practice for many years, and is widely accepted in industry. Typically, two kinds of probes are used - electrical resistance and linear polarization resistance (LPR) probes.In this study, the effectiveness and accuracy of the LPR technique was evaluated by comparing the electrochemical measurements with the results of mass loss tests using corrosion coupons. The corrosivity of the environment, a synthetic brackish water, was varied by varying the calcium hardness and alkalinity, and to simulate actual plant conditions temperatures of 35°C and 45°C were used. In addition to the corrosion rate measurements, the iron concentration was measured, as well as the imbalance from the probe.The corrosion rates obtained by LPR were from 57% lower to 385%higher than those from the immersion tests. Most probe measurements were higher than the immersion results, and 50% of the probe results were50% or more higher than the immersion results. The best correspondence between the two methods was obtained at low calcium levels, except for one measurement that was 93% higher than the coupon results. There was no clear correlation between parameters such as temperature and total alkalinity and the difference between the results. It would therefore appear that LPR measurements can differ significantly from immersion results, and LPR results should therefore be used with caution in industrial applications."

The performance of microemulsified diesel and conventional diesel collectors in coal flotation was compared by flotation indicators, including combustible recovery, ash content of the clean coal, and the flotation index. An efficient separation with lower dosage was obtained using the microemulsified diesel collector. Under optimum separation conditions, the microemulsion consumption was 100 g/t less compared with diesel. The saving in diesel consumption using the microemulsion reached about 70%, disregarding the consumption of the surfactant and cosurfactant. Frothing tests showed that the frother dosage was decreased by using the microemulsion collector, because of the surfactant and cosurfactant added during preparation. The microemulsified diesel collector is superior to the conventional diesel collector in terms of diesel consumption and separation efficiency, but the selectivity requires further improvement. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng (Min. Eng.) degree A study was conducted to investigated and compare the feasibility of two single level extraction layouts for an intact part of theorebody of the De Beers diamond mine, Koffiefontein. Two layouts were chosen and the tonnage profile, development schedule and production ring blast layouts were calculated by applying the information acquired through a literature study. Current principles used on the mine were also applied. The first layout chosen is described as a simple straightforward layout with 6 production tunnels spaced 15 m apart, and is referred to as Layout A. The second layout, named Layout B, is described as a complex chevron layout with 9 production tunnels spaced 15 m apart. This layout has a rim tunnel situated in the kimberlite ground, which is called a chevron and this made the layout more complex than Layout A. By comparing the financial results of the two layouts, it was found that Layout B is a more feasible option than Layout A. Sensitivity analyses show that both layouts are extremely sensitive to the revenue of the projects. Therefore it is recommended that Layout B can prove to be a source of additional tonnage to add to the total tonnage profile of the mine and to extend the life of mine by 20 months, only if certain financial/economic factors improve. There is, however, still some areas of the project that need to be investigated.

A modified approach to the implementation of Gy?s sampling theory is discussed and used to design a procedure for sampling crushed gold ore feed to metallurgical process plants. The approach involves calibration of certain ore-specific parameters. These parameters were calibrated for two different crushed gold ores en route to grinding mills in process plants. The model predictions were compared with the predictions from Gy?s original model. Far smaller masses of samples are required by the modified model than by Gy?s model at the same relative variance. The representativeness of the sampling procedure if normally distributed errors are assumed was also calculated. These procedures and evaluations lead to significant savings on cost of handling and preparation of the samples and to a quantifiable degree of confidence in the analytical results for the process plant.

The study summarized in this paper focused on expanding existing South African mine closure cost calculation models to provide a new model that incorporates risks, which could have an effect on the closure costs during the life cycle of the mine. This research is important because currently there are a number of mines that do not have sufficient financial provision to close and rehabilitate the mines. The magnitude of the lack of funds could be reduced or eliminated if the closure cost calculation is done in a more risk-orientated manner. The model consists of an expansion of existing closure cost calculation models, by applying the Monte Carlo risk simulation technique to model influences of external and internal changes affecting closure costs. It is shown that the proposed risk-based model provides a way to understand better the implications of uncertainty on the closure costs.

Black Mountain, a polymetallic base metal mine located in the Northern Cape territory of South Africa has been blessed with high grade economic ore for many years. Now that the Broken Hill orebody is nearing the end of its life, a lower grade orebody (Swartberg) is being exploited to supplement production from Broken Hill. In addition, ore from stopes in the upper levels of the Broken Hill orebody is considerably tarnished (oxidized). As a natural result, the remaining ore contains a higher percentage of magnetite, pyrrhotite and pyrite than in earlier years. Bismuth, cadmium and cobalt also occur in the ore in higher quantities. The life of the mine has been lengthened with the discovery of further deeper-lying ore reserves extending from the Broken Hill orebody suitably called the Deeps section. However, to bridge the gap between development of the new reserve and the exhaustion of the old reserve, these lower grade and tarnished (oxidized) ores have to be treated. The mine has had reasonable success in identifying unfavourable or problematic ore types and stockpiling them separately to blend in small quantities with more favourable ore. Bench and plant scale tests have aided identification of the various ore types and significant improvements in flotation metallurgical results have been seen. Copper, lead and zinc metal occur as sulphides in the ore. The mill consists of a differential and sequential flotation process that extracts copper concentrate, lead concentrate and zinc concentrate respectively with silver metal recovered in the copper and lead concentrates. This paper describes the ore blending strategy employed at the mine to maximize the econo-metallurgical efficiency of the operation.

Bulk materials handling systems are extensively used in the mining and minerals industry, where a fairly high incidence of structural failure is experienced, notwithstanding design compliance with appropriate standards. A number of case studies are explored to demonstrate how insufficient controls or protection systems have contributed to structural failures on mobile bulk handling equipment. The importance of design integration across engineering disciplines is highlighted. The revision of ISO 5049-1 (1994) is proposed to provide specific rules and guidelines pertaining to machine protection systems. It is further recommended that the structural design engineer of the original equipment manufacturer(OEM) fulfils a more prominent role during the final acceptance and handover of mobile bulk handling equipment, with specific reference to protection systems.

Instability in rockpasses at deep levels often initiates as a result of stress induced fracturing of the rock on the walls of the pass. This may then progress to a stage at which the geological structure of the rock mass becomes dominant and permits large joint-defined blocks and slabs to become unstable. In this paper, a technique is described in which jointing parameters and their variabilities?orientations, spacings and lengths?are taken into account in estimating the extent of failure that may develop around a typical unsupported deep level gold mine rockpass. The results of this prediction are compared with the results obtained from a review of pass performance in the gold mining industry.

A two-year study focused on current noise exposure levels in the South African mining industry, aimed at helping the Mine Health and Safety Council of South Africa meet its milestones for eliminating noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Methods A multi-task methodology was adapted from international baseline studies to determine the exposure to noise in both large-scale and small- to medium-scale mines. Results On average, 66.7 per cent of the employees sampled in year 1 and 78.4 per cent in year 2 were exposed to noise levels of above the 85 dB A legislated occupational exposure level. Conclusions Information obtained through the study could be developed into a national personal noise exposure database, including audiometric results, equipment noise emission levels and initiatives for noise engineering control by mines and equipment manufacturers to facilitate targets of eliminating NIHL. The Limpopo Metamorphic Belt is a complex geological terrane with at least three major deformational events. Tectonically juxtaposed lithology, open to isoclinal folding, crosscutting and re-activated shear zones and metamorphic gneisses and schists make pit slope design and maintenance a risky business. Venetia diamond mine?s Cut 3 is planned to reach 360 m by 2011. The difficult rockmass created problems in the original pit and a new more comprehensive slope design was necessary. Nearly 9 km of geotechnical drilling were undertaken to produce a new geological model and provide geotechnical information near the final Cut 3 face. All existing data from the pit were brought together into a database. SRK Consulting were brought into the project to audit the process and provide most of the manpower for the data analysis. Existing failures were back-analysed and the geotechnical domains identified. Analyses of only the southern domains are discussed in this paper. Geotechnical engineers can design slopes at any angle, but it is up to the managers at the mine to decide what risk they are willing to accept in a slope design. Once the issue of risk was discussed and settled in respect of the consequences of failure, each of the main geotechnical domains were analysed to produce a slope design at5% probability of failure with 15% above the first ramp. A risk assessment of the design was then undertaken to determine what risk the design placed on the equipment, personnel and the profitability of the overall mining operation. The risk assessment indicated minimal risk to the operation. One of the main assumptions of the final design is that the pit slopes will be dewatered. A project was immediately put in place to determine a groundwater model for the mine and to thereby determine the best dewatering procedure. However, it should be obvious that it is practically impossible to prevent benches from getting briefly saturated with water during storm conditions. It was therefore necessary to look specifically at supporting the crests of the ramps in the problematic southern domains to guard against the possibility of crest failure during heavy rains. The data available were re-analysed toward this objective. Spiles were recommended as the most cost-effective support system, and a probabilistic approach was used in the design. The final design has a 5% probability of failure, and the analyses indicate a strong sensitivity of the required spile spacing to the strength of the reinforcement material that will eventually be used. The pit slope parameters derived as per the discussion in this paper have just begun to be implemented at Venetia Mine.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Phd.(Process Engineering) degree Process modelling is an essential element in the development of advanced (model-based) process control systems, accounting for up to 80% of the cost of development. Often, models based on historic process data are the only viable option when dealing with processes that cannot be modeled cost-effectively from first principles. Despite major advances that have recently been made in the field of nonlinear process modeling, some basic idea of the dynamic behaviour of a process system is important prior to system identification. While many process systems seem unlikely to be linear, the possible nonlinear aspects of their dynamics are not necessarily supported by the data. This may have significant implications for subsequent system identification or interpretation of the data. For example, it is quite possible that an underlying nonlinear deterministic signal may be obscured by a high degree of measurement or process noise, to the extent that it may be critical in the choice of model to fit to the data. The method of surrogate data analysis has recently been proposed as a means to classify the underlying dynamics of complex systems, and in this paper the use of Fourier transform surrogates to classify process systems is explored. Leinster Nickel Operations, located in Western Australia, consists of an underground and three open pit mines in relatively adverse ground conditions. This paper reviews our ground control practices in the open pits, covering aspects of ground support, wall control and monitoring. These methods have been effective in allowing mining operations to continue beneath unstable slopes. In particular, the use of Ground probe?s slope stability radar has enabled the Harmony open pit to safely operate for months following indication of failure from traditional methods. This case study highlights the benefits of investing in appropriate slope stability monitoring systems.

The Principality of Asturias is a region situated in Northern Spain with two centuries of tradition in underground coal mining. In addition, its uneven relief has obliged the construction of a great number of tunnels both for railways and roads. Basing on this experience and an ever increasing need to improve on safety, the Barredo Foundation dependent on the Regional Government and the University, provides and manages a Centre for Research of Fires and Ventilation in Tunnels. The Centre has as its most important infrastructure, a tunnel 540 m long, 9,5 m wide and 8,0 m high at centre. This section coupled with ventilation equipment allows the simulation of risk conditions at real scale, which is achieved by modifying the geometry of the section and through two powerful stations situated one at either en of the tunnel. In addition, the Centre houses two test benches for fans and electrical motors at high temperatures. One bench with a re-circulation conduit is the most appropriate for tests in Transversal and Semi-transversal type of installations. The other, is for the testing of electrical motors or fans which operate in zones where the surrounding temperature is high. In this Centre, training has also been developed for Fire Fighters and Civilian Protection Personnel who have to work in fire and smoke rescue conditions in underground structures. Testing conducted at real scale enables this formation and also to improve different computer programmes in the field of Fires and Ventilation.

Effective strata control is a prerequisite for maintaining an efficient mining operation. If the strata in the vicinity of an opening are not controlled effectively, it is impossible to perform a safe, efficient and economical operation. In this paper, the reasons and outcome of instability problems observed in roadways opened in clay and marl at the Bolu Colliery of Yeni Çeltek Establishment are investigated. Roadways under examination were located in a syncline causing high residual tectonic stresses. Factors affecting the instability have been studied thoroughly by examining geology and tectonics of the area, establishing convergence measuring stations to understand in situ behaviour of supports and laboratory tests to determine engineering properties of samples taken from nearby convergence measurement stations. As a conclusion, a new production strategy and a new support system are recommended to maintain stability.

"SynopsisCost estimation for surface coal mines is a critical practice that affects both profitability and competitiveness. New mines require these costs to be estimated using available information before a project begins. The competitive advantage of a new mine depends on it being both efficient and cost-effective. Low-cost producing mines have a higher chance of survival in a low-price environment than do high-cost producers. The competitiveness and profitability of a coal mine is based on the costs of production and the supply position on the cost curve. There is no single method of cost estimation, and the available methods consider only one or a few variables, leaving out multiple variables that could significantly affect the estimation of mine costs. Mining companies are thus searching extensively for a method that will increase accuracy in the estimation and evaluation of mining projectsThis paper highlights the shortcomings of the available approaches and proposes a data envelopment analysis method to develop a frontier for effective surface coal mines, and the use of a parametric method for modelling the costs and productivity of new mines to ensure effective competitiveness. The models will extend the capability of estimation and the accuracy of estimates using the efficient decision-making units, by considering the optimal mine-specific and external variables affecting costs.IntroductionCoal contributes 25% of the world’s primary energy needs, after fuel oil, which contributes 35%. The world energy demand, estimated over the period 1990 to 2030, is expanding at a cumulative annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.7% (Schernikau, 2010, p. 14). This emphasizes the need for enhancing the production of existing mines, as well as opening new mines in order to increase the supply of coal."

The cost of corrosion as measured by such cost components as the renovation or replacement of coated steel, or the use of expensive coating systems on steel, is considerable. Extrapolating from figures for the USA would place the overall cost of corrosion for South Africa as a figure of the order of magnitude of something over 1% of the GNP. This is a sizeable amount, of which costs associated with atmospheric corrosion would be a significant proportion. The corrosivity of an atmosphere can be defined as the ability of the atmosphere to cause corrosion in a given metal or alloy (International Standards Organization [1]). The ISO Standard 9223 specifies the key factors in the atmospheric corrosion of metals and alloys, and defines categories of corrosivity on the basis of these factors. Prior to the publication of that ISO standard, Callaghan published the results of his twenty-year exposure programme and his excellent corrosivity map of Southern Africa [2]. The present author published updates of the corrosivity map in 1999 [3] and again in 2003 [4]. The summary of the individual areas of corrosivity around Southern Africa was published in the latter paper, and is reproduced here as the following TABLE 1. Of significance in TABLE 1 are the numerous regions of very high corrosivity (C5 or beyond), particularly the rural West Coast shoreline, the North East Coast (KZN) shoreline, and the coastal cities Cape Town, Durban and Richards Bay. The corrosivity map as published is obviously based on much extrapolation as only a small number of points have been measured. During the past three years further measurements have been made, mostly however at the same sites in order to give greater reliability and to monitor long-term trends with changes in pollution. These two aspects are incorporated in this update. There has become available a greater amount of air pollution data for centres in South Africa than was the case some years ago. In this present paper the pollution data are used to extrapolate the corrosivity over areas where little or no direct corrosivity measurement has been made. This methodology is described in ISO 9223.

Slat-band chains, currently manufactured from Type 430 ferritic stainless steel, are used as conveyors in various industries. A process to strengthen these chains?with the aim of prolonging the lifetime of the conveyors?was developed recently. The process entails heat treating the cold-worked chain at 475°C,strengthening the material by precipitation of the Cr-rich phase a? at relatively long periods of aging. In the present work, it was found that increasing the interstitial content by solution heat treatments (at 880°C or 930°C) prior to cold rolling and aging, causes an increase in strength at shorter aging times as a result of the precipitation of chromium-rich carbides and nitrides. The solution treatments can introduce martensite into the microstructure if carried out at a sufficiently high temperature. This, along with the deformation caused by cold work, also increases the strength. Corrosion resistance is not affected by the treatments, but ductility is lowered. However, calculated critical crack lengths indicate that solution treatment at a temperature below the Ac1allows for a larger critical flaw size, and that the lifetime of the chains will probably be determined by fatigue. Although the duration of the service of the chains are reportedly controlled by wear, with these treatments the tensile strength of the material is increased to within acceptable limits for conveyor chains. The tensile strength is an indication of the wear or abrasion resistance of a material. It is expected that after the treatments, the wear resistance will be improved, but since embrittlement occurs, the fatigue resistance is lowered. It is concluded that the preferred processing route for the chains would be solution treatment at 880°C, fast quenching to trap the interstitial atoms, cold rolling and then aging at 475°C for 8 minutes.

This article outlines the results of a computer simulation reproducing the transport of a mixture of air and methane following the outburst on 25 November, 2005 in transport gallery D-6, bed 409/4, at the ?Zofiówka? hard coal mine. Based on a mathematical model, numerical method and boundary conditions from the disturbance caused by the outburst, the Ventgraph system of computer simulation programs was adopted for the study. We performed a computer simulation of the influence exerted by the outburst on the propagation of the air and methane mixture, and compared the results of this simulation with those of the actual event as registered by sensors of the mine monitoring system. A validation of the model allowed us to present temporal changes in the concentration of methane and air along flow routes. This paper investigates the performance of the neural network technique in a placer deposit situated at the Nome district in Alaska. Initially a single neural network model was constructed to estimate the gold grade. However, at a later stage, an ensemble model consisting of multiple networks was also constructed via the Adaboost algorithm. The reason behind the use of the ensemble model of the Adaboost algorithm was to examine if the ensemble model provided superior performance to the single neural network. As indicated by other studies, Adaboost did not have a better performance than a single neural network in this specific application. This may be due to the high noise inherent in the gold data used in this project. Consequently R2 values of gold prediction are also poor for both the single and multiple networks.

"*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Mining Engineering) degreeSynopsisLiqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) has been experiencing problems with boulders after blasting where the fragment sizes exceed the maximum of 800 mm as per mine standard. As a result, the mine has employed various methods to improve the fragmentation. The goal is to produce a run-of-mine (ROM) feed that does not choke the crusher and cause delays in production. In order to achieve this goal, fragmentation distribution within the fines and coarse envelope must be optimized through effective planning of blasting activities and accurate execution.The mine determined the fines-coarse envelope within which the entire crushing system can handle fragments using Split Desktop software. It is expected that both the predicted and actual fragmentation curves lie within that envelope for optimal fragmentation. The Kuz-Ram model with blast design parameters of 2.6 m for burden, 2.8 m for spacing, and 127 mm hole diameter was used to predict the fragmentation. The results show that the blast design parameters may need altering to achieve optimum fragmentation. Furthermore, the execution of the drilling and blasting may be the cause of the fragmentation problems. The mean fragmentation size (X50) differs greatly, unlike the uniformity index (n)s values which are relatively close to each other (0.6 to 2.2). The mean squared error (MSE) values have a large range. A proposed solution is a modified burden, spacing, and hole diameter. It is concluded that blast design parameters need to be reviewed in order to obtain correct predictions. IntroductionFragmentation has an impact on the mine production cycle which comprises, inter alia, drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, and crushing. Correct fragmentation as set by the plant design is important as it reduces the time lost due to secondary blasting and/or loading difficulties. In this paper we analyse blast results at Liqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) in Lesotho for a period of six months. This project was undertaken to observe the trends from the blasts and to identify whether any discrepancies exist in the overall blast information. The period under study included 16 blasts."
