In past years, Chile has been the largest copper producer in the world and for 2002 mining represented country average of 10 % of the GDP, accounting for 47 % of the total exportation. As copper sulphides are the main mining resources in the country, the metal is produced using the classical processes of flotation and pyrometallurgical extraction. Seven copper smelter plants, which extends from the northern Atacama desert to the central part of the country produced1,522,000 metric tons of fine copper in 2002, approximately one half of total copper concentrate production, with a notorious environmental impact due to the great amount of slag produced during these extraction steps. In this work, a global characterization of copper pyrometallurgical slags produced and disposed of in Chile and worldwide is done, and the concept of total project development is considered to explain the scopes of the study, recovering different compounds and generating new activities around mining. The presentation is completed with the proposal of various methods and techniques being developed today in a joint project between smelter plants and the University of Concepción, with the support of the Chilean government and mining companies, addressed to generate new materials from copper slag. Recovery of copper, molybdenum, precious metals, silica and iron, that is the most abundant component of the slag, are the goals for this research. Metals, commercial compounds, alloys and different forms of iron oxides for steel industry are proposed products.

A proper management system of coal mine methane gas associated with underground mining activities is essential for the mine safety due to its nature of explosion. Optimum design of the mine ventilation and gas drainage need accurate prediction of gas flow rate emitted by mining activities. Permeability to gas, which is affected by stress conditions of surrounding rock mass, governs the emission rate of the gases. JCOAL has developed a three dimensional FEM simulation program named Mine Gas Flow 3D (MGF-3D). MGF-3D is designed to predict the volume of methane gas emitted from surrounding coal and rock seams based on stress distribution and permeability change which are determined by 3D stress analysis. In MGF-3D, stress change and/or expansion of fractured zone affected by mining is calculated at the first and then gas emission into roadways and longwall panels under the determined stress conditions is calculated using Darcy’s law. MGF-3D also can set up a number of pre-drainage holes and estimate drainage gas volume from each hole. This function makes MGF-3D remarkable program. These simulations for gas emission can contribute to mine gas utilization plan. Comparison between actual measurement of gas emission in the underground mine and simulation results has been performed and availability for the mine safety and problems with MGF-3D are discussed in this report.

Fine phosphate feed is considered to be slime and normally disposed of as a discard in settling ponds or dumped as landfill. The purpose of this research was to establish whether commercially acceptable qualities and yields could be obtained from this material using dry separation methods. The results obtained from the electrostatic separation of <105 µm phosphate ore are presented. An existing separator was upgraded in order to improve on product and flotation concentrate recovery, to test different mineral, and to reduce particle residence time between the charging chamber and the separating zone of the separator. The operating conditions were varied according to the charges imparted to the particles in the electric field, and according to other device parameters. Parameters such as splitter position, charge reversal, rotation speed, charging voltage and separating voltage. The <105 µm phosphate feed was concentrated under both triboelectrification and inductive charging. The use of inductive charging and charge reversal resulted in a significant increase in grade for <105 µm phosphate feed, with the P205 grade increasing from about 12 per cent to 20.50 per cent, and a recovery of 26.30 per cent under a single stage of separation. It was found that better separation was achieved at rotation speed of 6000 r/min, -8 kV charging voltage, and 25 kV separating voltage.

The Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM) is a joint venture between Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited and Royal Bafokeng Resources (Pty) Ltd (Bafokeng). The mining lease has been granted over Boschkoppie 104JQ and is located approximately 10 km south of the Pilanesberg Alkaline Complex. The Merensky Reef, which constitutes the principal orebody, is geologically complex. A relationship between its geological variability and the associated mineralization has been established by defining a number of facies types. The Merensky Reef has been subdivided into seven distinct facies types: the pegmatoidal facies, contact facies, FW1 potholefacies, FW3 pothole facies, FW6 pothole facies, and FW7 pothole facies. The Merensky Reef, which does not form part of the potholed reef, has a large component of footwall mineralization. The pothole facies, in contrast, has mineralization located in the hangingwall. Statistical analysis of the facies types indicates that they are unique populations and hence need to be evaluated independently. The mining lease has distinct structural domains that have added additional complications to evaluation of the Merensky Reef. The Merensky facies on BRPM exhibit unique geological and statistical characteristics within well-defined structural blocks. Due to the extreme variability of the Merensky Reef on BRPM a unique approach has been developed, within Anglo Platinum, to evaluate the deposit. Mining cuts are defined and composited for the individual facies types, and then modelled individually by applying known geological controls. The resultant grade models are weighted based on statistical and local geological knowledge. The object of weighting the facies is to replicate the variability observed in the orebody. The introduction of stringent geological controls to the evaluation process has resulted in increased confidence in the in situ grades estimated as an input to the mine planning process.

In this paper, the finite element method is used to obtain deformations of a rock tunnel. More than 3,000 numerical simulations and calculations were carried out. The analysis of this results has allowed to achieve mathematical formulations and graphs, to obtain in advance support monitored displacements in tunnelling construction, so they can be predicted before excavation and supporting woks. The application of the presented formulations and charts will aid engineers to control tunnel monitoring, reducing decision time when problems occur. The analysis is limited to cases involving elastic behaviour of the terrain for tunnels of average to good quality in rock, and to excavation sections of average or smaller dimensions for road tunnels. The results show that, in all cases, mathematical expressions to obtain induced displacements around tunnel excavations, have similar pattern than Kirsch (1898) expressions for circular excavations. As corollary of the achieved results, a method to estimate in situ natural geostress ratio K0=sh/sv , by means of convergence measurements, is presented. In diesem Beitrag wurden die Verschiebungen eines Tunnels durch die Methode de Finiten Elemente berechnet. Mehr als 3000 numerische Simulationen und Berechnungen wurden ausgeführt. Die Analyse dieser Resultate hat es ermöglicht, mathematische Formeln und Grafiken zu entwickeln, die zur Voraussage der Verschiebungen in Tunnel dienen, auch unter Betrachtung der verschiedenartigen Abstützungen. So können die Verschiebungen vor den Erdarbeiten und dem Bau der Abstützung abgeschätzt werden. Die abgeleiteten Formeln und Grafiken werden vor allem einen grossen Dienst für Ingenieure bei der Mithilfe zu zeitsparenden Entscheidungen im Tunnelbau und bei der Tunnelkontrolle leisten. Die analysierten Fälle sind auf eine elastische Modellierung des Baugrunds beschränkt, sowie auf eine mittlere bis gute Qualität des Felsens und auf die Aushebung von Abtragungsabschnitten mittlerer oder geringer Grösse für den Strassenverkehr. Die Resultate zeigen, dass in allen Fällen die hergeleiteten Formeln zur Berechnung der durch den Tunnelbau verursachten Verschiebungen um den Tunnel die gleiche mathematische Struktur haben wie diejenigen von Kirsch (1898) für kreisförmigen Bodenaushub. Als Korollarium der ausgeführten Berechnungen wird eine Methode zur Abschätzung der vorherrschenden in situ Geospannungs-Verhälniss K0=sh/sv angegeben, die von den Messungen der Verschiebungen im Tunnel ausgeht. Dans cet article, la méthode des éléments finis est utilisée pour obtenir les déformations d’un tunnel creusé dans la roche. Plus de 3000 simulations numériques et calculs ont été effectuées. L’analyse de ces résultats a permis de définir des modèles mathématiques et des abaques afin de prédire, avant l’excavation et les travaux de soutènement, les déplacements auscultés pendant la construction du tunnel. L’application de ces modèles et abaques permettra donc aux ingénieurs de contrôler les déplacements durant l’auscultation du tunnel et de réduire le temps de décision lorsque des problèmes surviennent. L’analyse est limitée au cas du comportement élastique du terrain pour des tunnels creusés dans de la roche de moyenne a bonne qualité, et à de sections d’excavation de petites à moyennes dimensions pour des tunnels routiers. Les résultats montrent que, dans tous les cas, les expressions mathématiques permettant d’obtenir les déplacements induits autour des excavations de tunnel, présentent des similitudes avec celles de Kirsch (1898) pour des excavations circulaires. Resolution Copper Mine is planned to be a 2000 m deep panel cave mine with virgin rock temperatures above 80°C in rock with a high crystalline silica content. The planned run-of-mine production rate is 120 kt/day. The project is in prefeasibility evaluation. This paper discusses features of the ventilation system design, which include multiple ventilation shafts with total flow of about 3000 m³/s and both surface and underground refrigeration systems with more than 140 MW total capacity. This will be a very challenging mine to ventilate, but this work has demonstrated that it will be technically achievable with the application of existing technology.

Viscosity measurements were carried out on slags in the CaO-Cu2O-CuO-MgO-SiO2systemcontaining ~ 63 wt% SiO2in air. The experimental work was carried out over a range of temperatures where the slags were completely liquid. Initial measurements were on a binary CaO-SiO2slag to which incremental additions of CuxO-MgO-SiO2slag with the same silica mole fraction were made. The viscosity-temperature relationship was measured for slags with‘Cu2O’contents of 0.02, 0.19, 0.38, 0.79, 1.69, 2.47, 3.01, 5.31 and 10.0 wt%. The proportions of Cu+and Cu2+in the slags were determined. The oxidation state of Cushifted from predominantly Cu+to Cu2+, with the Cu+/Cu2+ratio of approximately 0.3 for slag with a Cu content above 2 wt%. This is equivalent to Cu1.13O. The trends observed for changes of Cu2+/Cu+redox ratio with slag chemistry were consistent with the literature. Decreasing the CaO content by substituting copper oxide resulted in a decrease in the Cu+/Cu2+redox ratio. The change in ratio corresponded to a shift of the value of x in CuxO from an initial value of 1.8 to 1.1,when the slags contained 10% ‘Cu2O’. In this study, the SiO2content of the slags varied between 64 and 60 wt% as the Cu content increased. The viscosity of the slag containing 10 wt% CuxO was nearly 4.5 times lower than the binary CaO-SiO2slag. As the silica mole fraction (xSiO2) actually stayed constant (0.61±0.009),the results show that CuxO acted as a network breaker. Comparison with other ternary slags with similar silica mole fractions suggest that that addition of CuxO to silicate slags has a stronger effect on lowering the viscosity than FeO or MnO has on a molar basis. The geometry and morphology of a set of low-angle fractures around a stope in a deep Witwatersrand gold mine are explained in terms of extension fractures forming under variable conditions of stress. Primary extension fractures (E1) form some distance ahead of an advancing stope along the s1, s2 plane. With stope advance, a couple of these fractures end up in a stress regime conducive to transpressional shear and a secondary set of extension fractures(E2) is formed at a high angle to the primary fractures. i.e. at a low angle to the stope. As the E2 fractures are undermined, they migrate into a stress regime of transtensional shear and a third set of extension fractures (E3) may develop between E2 fractures. These have sigmoidal shapes, being parallel to the E2 fractures at the E2 discontinuity where s3 is negative, and curved through the un-fractured rock between E2 fractures where s3 is positive at the instant of fracturing. The fractures all display fractographic features characteristic of dynamic extension failure with striae indicative of the direction of rupture propagation and the local, instantaneous orientation of s1.

The Waterberg Coalfield has vast potential to become a significantmining and industrial centre in South Africa. Its future developmenthinges on a number of critical decisions that must be made jointly by government, power utilities and industry, and on some technical and economic challenges that must initially be overcome. Sufficient water is the primary key to enabling exploitation, together with an adequate market for the large volumes of low-grade coal. As the most likely consumer of this coal will be either a power station or a petrochemical complex, the need for additional energy will be a driving force in the development of this coalfield. Conventional mining methods can exploit the shallow coal resources in both the Grootegeluk and the Vryheid formations, but alternative technologies such as coalbed methane extraction and underground coal gasification are the only currently known technologies that may be able to exploit the deep Grootegeluk Formation resources. However, extensive research is still required into these procedures, particularly with respect to the Waterberg coals. Transport infrastructure to the region is currently not sufficiently well developed to support large-scale exploitation of the region?s coal resources. In particular, the railway line would have to be extensively upgraded to allow the increased export of coal. Alternative transport methods such as pipelines would also have to be pursued to serve a large Sasol-type petrochemical complex or coal gas extraction. The road network would also require improvement, as only the roads between the main commercial centres are currently tarred. Dr Con Fauconnier, Kumba CEO, concluded his presentation to the Investing in African Mining Conference 2004 with the words: Again, it?s all about infrastructure? when it?s there, it enables the development of bulk mining projects which attract the resultant economic benefits for the region and country as a whole. These words aptly sum up one of the stumbling blocks to the future development of the Waterberg Coalfield.

Slag-metal and slag-metal-gas heterogeneous equilibria involving MnO-containing slags have been simulated using recently developed Mn-based alloy and IRSID oxide thermochemical databases. A large number of experimental equilibrium data have been used to verify the calculation results. The experimental slag-metal and slag-metal-gas equilibria in MnO-SiO2binary, MnO-SiO2-CaO and MnO-SiO2-Al2O3ternary, MnO-SiO2-CaO-Al2O3quaternary andMnO-SiO2-CaO-Al2O3-MgO higher-order system can be reproduced within experimental uncertainties. The influence of temperature, CO partial pressure and slag chemistry on the Mn-and Si-distribution equilibria have been quantitatively evaluated. The seismicity of the Witwatersrand Basin and Bushveld Complex has been analysed, revealing significant differences in source and damage mechanisms. A comparison of mining taking place at similar depths and extraction ratios indicates that the seismic energy release rate is considerably lower in the Bushveld Complex. Technologies introduced in the past decade to manage the risk of rockbursting are reviewed and assessed. These include geophysical methods to detect hazardous structures ahead of mining, new mining layouts and support systems, and the mechanization of in-stope processes. Despite important differences in geology, in situ stress, mining layouts and methods, there are many opportunities for the reciprocal transfer of knowledge, experience and technology between the gold and platinum mining sectors to improve the management of the rockburst risk.

The risk associated with mining induced seismicity is one of the major threats to the safety and sustainability of deep underground mines. This paper describes techniques that allow site practitioners to efficiently control such risks in mines. The proposed approaches rely on ground support to strategically control seismic risk and re-entry time to tactically control this risk. The strategic approach is based on the detailed understanding of past seismicity to as certain the seismic hazard of individual sources throughout the mine. This approach also relies on assessing the potential damage that these sources can induce on nearby excavations using the excavation vulnerability potential (EVP) and rockburst damage potential (RDP) concepts proposed by Heal et al. (2006). It is then possible to investigate how to reduce the risk of experiencing damaging seismicity in mine drives by locally enhancing the ground support system. The tactical approach relies on a proposed methodology to estimate reliable re-entry times or exclusion periods based on the seismic decay following blasting. Some examples of how these techniques have been applied in Australian mines are given.

Analyses of accident records show that a better understanding of very basic strata control principles and practices, by production personnel, will improve worker safety. Workers, lack of knowledge, with respect to aspects of strata control, increases their exposure to such strata control risks. The primary objective of the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) project 02 02 07 was to develop tools for the transfer of strata control knowledge. Four such tools were developed, three of which focused on illiterate underground mine team members who are not yet able to take advantage of the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) learning process (see project outcomes 2, 3 and 4 below). The tools were designed to equip these workers with sufficient knowledge and ability to work safely underground until such time as they can take advantage of the MQA system. Project outcomes: 1 A four-minute video using animation to illustrate the causes and prevention of falls of roof in South African collieries. 2 Software to demonstrate the capability of reconstructing, interactively, accident scenes and actions that have taken place underground in stopes. 3 A strata control bridging course for illiterate mine team workers. 4 Small-scale wooden models that will be used to design life-size mock-up facilities to assist with the above mentioned bridging course. 5 Workshops and presentations to demonstrate the outcomes 1to 4 above.

IRUP is an iron-rich ultramafic pegmatite rock that formed due to hot ironrich fluids and gases replacing local stratigraphic zones of the Bushveld Complex. This study focuses on the estimation of the probability of IRUP occurrence on the Merensky Reef at the Marikana Karee Mine. A 2.15 million centare IRUP-rich domain at the Karee Mine was initially defined from the interpretation of a surface aeromagnetic anomaly, and exposures in the mine workings. Surface boreholes (spaced 250-500 m apart) within this IRUP domain contain approximately equal numbers of IRUP-replaced and IRUP-free intersections. Owing to the uncertainty in the continuity of the IRUP alteration (a result of the wide borehole spacing), the risk associated with the development of mining infrastructure within this domain is unquantifiable. Semi-quantitative data comprising visual estimates of IRUP replacement from reef development mapping data and surface borehole reef intersections was interpolated into blocks using indicator kriging estimation. Comparative analyses of the estimate of IRUP occurrences were made by changing the block size and declustering the data systematically. Reconciliations of the probability of IRUP predicted from the block models derived from the different data-sets and sequential indicator simulation models were analysed for four mining study blocks. A quantitative approach to modelling the occurrence of IRUP can be an additional tool for refining the estimate of the geological losses that inform the mine plan in such high-risk zones.

"SynopsisCommencement of the next phase of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project is a year or so away from becoming reality. Some 50 km of tunnels in the form of access adits, shafts, diversion tunnels, and main waterways will be constructed. Sprayed concrete will form an integral part of the temporary and permanent rock support systems that will be installed. Furthermore, the use of sprayed concrete as a final tunnel lining solution was proposed as a viable alternative to concrete linings in the feasibility studies that preceded the forthcoming implementation phase.The aim of this paper is to make the reader aware of all the sprayed concrete related issues that engineers tend to grapple with during the design and construction of tunnel projects and other underground works. Primarily, these issues would include selection of applicable design parameters, technical specifications, construction application methods, quality control and, most importantly in the context of final or permanent linings, the durability of sprayed concrete.The International Tunnelling Association (ITA) Working Group (WG) 12 has been tasked specifically to publish a set of recommendations on the Quality and Control of the Application of Sprayed Concrete and the Testing of Sprayed Concrete for Durability. These tasks were also further explored at the recent World Tunnel Congress (WTC 2015) that was held in Dubrovnik, Croatia at the end of May 2015.IntroductionSprayed concrete is presented in a variety of shapes, designs, forms, application methods and accompanying terminologies including shotcrete, gunite, pneumatically applied concrete, and the like. The International Tunnelling Association (ITA) decided to standardize on a single terminology, namely ‘sprayed concrete’, in order to simplify specification, interpretation of guidelines, and codes of practice."

Thermodynamic properties of chromium oxides in molten slags are very important for optimization of stainless steel refining processes as well as reduction processes of chromium ores. The solubility of chromite into molten slags has been found to vary considerably with oxygen partial pressure and slag composition in former studies by the authors. In the present study, activity data and redox equilibria of chromium oxides measured under moderately reducing conditions, PO2= 6.95x10–11atm, at 1873 K are summarized. For the CaO-SiO2-CrOXsystem, the activity coefficient of chromium oxide increased with increasing basicity, and the optimized slag composition for stainless steel refining is assessed as that saturated with CaCr2O4and Cr2O3usingthe phase relations determined. On the other hand, the presence of MgO and Al2O3brings about different behaviour of chromium oxide activity and redox equilibiria and the 44 mass per centCaO-39 mass per cent SiO2-11 mass per cent Al2O3-6 mass per cent MgO slag is recommended toreduce the chromium oxidation loss in the practical stainless steel refining process at 1873 K. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng. (Metallurgical Engineering) The weathering of kimberlite can be accelerated with cations in solution if swelling of the kimberlite occurs in contact with the weathering medium. The type and amount of swelling clays present, along with the surface charge and cation valence, determine the degree of swelling that can occur. Crystalline swelling occurs by the incorporation of cations in the interlayer spacing of the silica sheets. Kimberlite exposed to cupric cations showed very strong weathering, indicating that this type of weathering may be considered a viable process option. Kimberlite fines generated after weathering with monovalent cations showed poor settling behaviour compared to kimberlite weathered with di-, and trivalent cations.

The influence of microwave treatment on copper flotation has been investigated. Comparative batch flotation tests carried out on ore treated at 5?12 kW for 0.1?0.5 s showed that improvements in copper recovery of between 6?15 % could be achieved compared with untreated ore. Both recovery and cumulative grade increased with increasing treatment time and power. A preliminary economic analysis showed that microwave treatment will be economically viable if recoveries similar to those determined on laboratory scale can be achieved on a plant.
