Some of the important properties of solid electrolytes that influence the performance of electrochemical oxygen probes are discussed in the first part of this paper. It is shown that accurate and reproducible measurements of oxygen in liquid steel are possible with commercial oxygen probes only if great care is exercised in the make-up of the chemical and phase composition, as well as the microstructure of the solid electrolytes used in these probes. To prove this premise, the second part of this study reports on the results of an experimental evaluation of new commercially available oxygen probe. An evaluation of the solid electrolytes used in this probe indicated that the consistency of the chemical composition, degree of stabilization, and microstructure of the electrolytes used are well controlled. The successful application of this particular oxygen probe under industrial conditions was confirmed. It was also found possible to make reliable and reproducible measurements, with acceptable uncertainty, by proper handling of the probe. Some recommendations are made as to the interpretation of the e.m.f. response curve and the use of the electronic processing unit supplied with the probe.

Methods for the analysis of seismic hazards in mines are reviewed as illustrations of the techniques that are being used in some South African mines. The classical parameters that describe a hazard are the seismic activity rate, ?, the Gutenberg-Richter value, b, and, occasionally, the maximum regional magnitude, mmax The activity rate is calculated readily owing to the inherent simplicity of its definition. The evaluation method presented for the Gutenberg-Richter b value takes into account the presence of mmax Three statistical procedures are described for the assessment of mmax which the maximum observed magnitude, Xmax a crucial role. Often, the configuration of mine seismic networks is changed, or the networks are improved, which inevitably gives rise to changes in the completeness of the seismic catalogues. The routine analysis of seismic hazards must account for these time dependent changes. A method for the evaluation of hazards is reviewed that accommodates varying levels of quality in the catalogues. Finally, the concept of the volume of ground motion (VGM) is presented. This is a technique that allows for most aspects of seismic hazards in mines. The advantage of the VGM is that a hazard can be described by one physically significant value: the volume of rock (cumulated over a time period) in which the ground motion exceeds some critical particle velocity. Data from the gold mining region in South Africa known as the Far West Rand is used in a demonstration of the discussed methods of hazard analysis.

The analysis of angular atypicality of lineaments as an aid to mineral exploration by J. P. G. PRETORI USc, M.Sc. (Pret.) (Visitor) and T. C. PARTRIDGE, Ph.D. (Natal) (Visitor) In an exploration project, data pertaining to 84000 lineaments in an area of 25 000 km2 were recorded. The total length of lineaments in intervals of one degree was determined. Angular intervals with Iow length densities were regarded as atypical. The proportion (by length) of lineaments with such atypical orientation was calculated for 5 km X 5 km grid squares. This index of angular atypicality was contoured and, used in conjunction with conventional photogeological techniques, contributed in a large measure to the success of the investigation.

High-temperature phase relations in the Pb-PbS system were established by the quenching of samples equilibrated in evacuated and sealed silica capsules. The liquid-miscibility gap seen in some previously published phase diagrams was not observed. The thermodynamic activities of PbS in liquid solutions of this system were derived at 1473 K from the isopiestic equilibration of samples belonging to this solution series with Cu2S-PbS melts of known PbS activities. The behaviour of Pb-PbS melts was found to be compatible with a subregular solution model. This model also made it possible to obtain an analytical liquidus for PbS that was in excelent agreement with the experimental determination.

The paper compares operational parameters for the electric reduction smelting of pig iron and ferroalloys in pilot and industrial furnaces. Data from two pilot furnaces of approximately 200 and 500 kW operating-load capacity, as well as from several production furnaces, are included. Examples are given for the smelting of pig iron, ferronickel, ferromanganese, ferrochromium, and ferrosilicon. In most instances, the results from the pilot furnaces, such as the values for consumption and product analyses, corresponded fairly well with comparable data from the industrial furnaces. For ferrosilicon, the power consumption in the pilot furnace was higher than that in the industrial furnace.

SYNOPSIS The paper describes the rib-pillar extraction method now used at Sigma Colliery in the Orange Free State. In this method, access roadways (with a high safety factor) are developed into a block of coal suitable for total extraction; pillars that have a low safety factor are then formed and extracted immediately. The method, together with the current practices of labour management, has resulted in better utilization of the coal resources and capital, increased production and labour productivity, and improved safety.

This volume, which was advertised in the December, 1968, issue of the Journal at a pre-publication price of £4, is edited by W. Ryan of Warren Spring Laboratory and published by the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, London. It is an up-to-date review of the operations of some 50 or so companies whose activities embrace the extraction and refinement of metals in the United Kingdom. Thirty-four metals are discussed, ranging from aluminium to zirconium and also there are chapters on ferro-alloys, non-ferrous alloys, high purity metals and metalloids, the platinum group metals and the rare earths. The sources of the various metals are given, followed generally by a brief description of the primary recovery process. Thereafter the operations of specific companies that deal in a particular metal are described in some detail. Certain metals such as barium, bismuth, gallium, thallium and zirconium are perforce covered very briefly as their commercial application is limited but in other cases, especially aluminium, copper lead and zinc, fairly detailed descriptions and illustrations are provided. This publication should be of considerable value to students as it presents modern procedures with regard to the refining and uses of the particular metals under review. This information may not be available from text books which in any case tend towards obsolescence. The book should also prove a valuable addition to the bookshelves of practising metallurgists providing, as it does, a schedule of most of the metallurgical companies operating in the United Kingdom. The quality of the paper and binding, the clarity of printing and illustrations and the arrangement of the subject matter are excellent and are subjects for which the editor and publishers are to be commended. The process flows of the three flotation circuits at the concentrator of the Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Ltd are described. Because of the complexity of the circuits and the associated reagent regime, the plant is equipped with a comprehensive range of control equipment. The different process-control strategies are discussed, and the modifications that have been necessary to the stabilizing control loops in the copper, lead, and zinc flotation circuits are shown in detail. It is concluded that the control strategies have continued to bring about benefits and improvements to the process.

Change is endemic in our society. Future change will be accelerated by an explosion in technology, communication, and political thought. To meet these challenges, rapid structural changes have been taking place in mining organizations both here and abroad. The management of shaft-sinking projects is a case in point. Shaft sinking is a seminal element in the sustained well-being of a deep level mining venture. Its accomplishment is fraught with risk, involves a high level of capital expenditure, and is a precursor to profitable mining investment. The chronology has been well researched, and the book defines al the milestones. It is a pity that there is no map of the early gold finds in South Africa, which would have offered a comparison with those shown of Australia and the USA. Nevertheless, the 'Pre-cyanidation, Cyanidation and Technical Development' eras fall logically into place, and reflect on the advances in social history and civilization, as well as in technology.

While some of the practical details of ilmenite smelting are not well documented, there is a substantial body of literature on the principles of ilmenite smelting, and the behaviour of solidified titania slag. This information is summarized, focusing on the basic reactions, departure from equilibrium, the behaviour of impurities, and reactions of solidified slag. The emphasis is on the South African operations.

Preg-robbing activity of the carbonaceous matter negatively impacts the process of precious metals recovery from gold-bearing ores and concentrates. In this paper, ore heap leaching (HL) using a blinding agent which inhibits ‘preg-robbing’ is a promising method. A carbonaceous ‘preg-robbing’ gold ore with head gold grade of 1.92 g/t from a Russian deposit was studied. Corg was 1.12%. In accordance with the Irgiredmet technique, preg-robbing activity was 65.3%. Surfactant reagent DN was used as the blinding agent. Column tests on the ore HL were conducted using two options. They were: a conventional flow sheet (Column 1) and a flow sheet with the reagent addition (Column 2). Gold recovery in Column 1 was 55.39% while gold recovery in Column 2 was 68.48%. Cassiterite is considered to be the only economically significant tin mineral in the earth's crust, and in its purest form has a tin content of 78,6 per cent. South Africa has limited deposits of the mineral, and by its exploitation contributes about 2 per cent of the world's production. This paper gives a brief history of tin mining in South Africa, which dates back almost 3000 years. Over the intervening years, many tin-mining operations have flourished and as quickly disappeared. At present there are only three tin mines in operation, and a description is given of the methods of mining, concentrating, and smelting that are used. The properties and uses of tin are listed, together with relevant statistics.

Jigging is a process of particle stratification in which the particle rearrangement results from an alternate expansion and compaction of a bed of particles by a pulsating fluid flow. The rearrangement results in layers of particles that are arranged by increasing density from top to bottom of the bed. The particles, in addition to the vertically expanded and compacted bed motion, move continuously, horizontally across the supporting screen and helped and influenced by the feed material that is introduced at one end. Following the particle stratification, the particle bed is physically ?cut? at a desired horizontal particle density plane to separate the desired product from the less dense gangue material. The issue of correct pulse characteristics (shape, amplitude and frequency) for the optimal metallurgical stratification of air pulsating jigs has been the subject of much discussion over the years. The accuracy of the dissymmetric stratification depends on the control parameters and the mechanical condition of specific equipment used. This paper will touch on some of the control and mechanical parameters affecting the separation efficiency.

The paper deals briefly with the history of vanadium, and its uses, price movement, and world resources. It then describes the titanomagnetite ore of the Bushveld Complex, and the production of vanadium from this ore at Highveld Steel & Vanadium Corporation Limited, giving details of the various processes used, including the roast-leach, rotary-kiln, electric-smelting, shaking-ladle, and basic-oxygen-furnace operations. The paper concludes with a very brief account of the treatment of Highveld slags in Europe for the production of vanadium pentoxlde and ferrovanadium.

In recent years, the grade of silica in zinc concentrate has increased due to the degradation of zinc content and the increase in impurity content in natural ores. It implies that the development of silica removal technology from zinc concentrate is necessary to solve problems in the smelting process caused by the high content of silica in zinc concentrate. In this paper, the authors investigated the silica removal processes from silica-rich zinc concentrate by mineral processing approaches such as re-grinding and flotation. This study focused on the pulverisation process as a pretreatment for the investigation of individual minerals' liberation from the silica-rich zinc concentrates using different kinds of pulverisers. Flotation experiments were performed to separate silica and zinc concentrate from the pulverizsd feed sample using a pH regulator (NaOH), activator (CuSO4), collecting agent (PAX), and foaming agent (DOW froth 250). Results showed that the liberation rate of silica (SiO2) was reached 75% from 13% by pulverisation in an attritor with a 2 mm ball in diameter, while silica accumulated in a fraction over 20 mm in size. Flotation experiments indicated that silica removal efficiency was achieved by 44% from + 20 mm fraction obtained from pulverisation whereas the grade of silica in froth reached 1.85 mass% from 4.5 mass%. Results indicate that silica could selectively separate from silica-rich zinc concentrate, and 99.8 % zinc recovery is achieved under the studied conditions. Some important aspects of the design of rock-cutting systems remain relatively unexplored. Two areas of practical significance in this context form the subject of this paper: cutting in jointed or fissured rock, and groove-deepening. A series of controlled laboratory experiments on the performance of disc cutters in jointed rock showed that the spatial and geometrical configuration of jointed rock masses needs to be taken into consideration in the design of mechanized rock excavating systems. One series of experiments showed that, under favourable geometric conditions, the energy required to cut in a jointed rock mass is at least half that required to cut otherwise intact rock. Groove-deepening-the progressive deepening of a groove by successive passes of a cutter-is a potential operational feature with most mechanized rock-excavating systems. Laboratory experiments revealed an important fundamental cycle of events associated with disc cutters when progressively deepening a groove in intact rock. Furthermore, in contrast to pick cutting, groove-deepening by discs is shown to be an efficient operation and one that should not necessarily be avoided. This can be directly attributed to increased interaction between the disc cutters as the result of an increase in magnitude of the lateral forces generated as a groove is deepened.

The problem of providing adequate thrust to manually operated rockdrills operating at air pressures of 70 lb/in2g to 80 lb/in2g with the aid of an air-leg is analyzed. It is shown that adequate thrust is provided by an air-leg or the stiff-leg if it is inclined at an angle to the floor of about 25°. However, this requires that the leg react against some support or protuberance, as the friction force between the leg and the floor is inadequate to contain the thrust. Conclusions summarizing optimum thrusts, blow frequencies, penetration rates, drill steel life and bit wear are presented.

The effects of extensive solid-waste packing as a support medium are described. It is shown that the waste packing resulted in excellent hangingwall conditions with only minor deleterious effects.
