The transport of tailings composites provided by different sources is a field of study where a limited amount of research has been conducted. Nevertheless, such systems are important sources of operational difficulties, especially in the case of high clay content tailings. The case presented in the present paper consists of a free surface flow pipeline transporting a composite of two different tailings with high clay content. It has presented operational difficulties such as partial blockages and upstream box and air intake overtopping events. In the present paper, the causes of these difficulties are identified. These include lack of complete mixing of the different tailings, multi-layered flow with low velocity and high yield values with high frictional losses. The pipeline characteristics and performance are analysed in three stages: design, initial operation and enhanced operation, the latter accomplished by means of increasing turbulence in the box located upstream from the pipeline. The last section of the pipeline and another distribution pipeline system located downstream from the pipeline have performed well. The cause of different behaviour of both systems is also assessed.

Premier Mine (a part of De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd) which is situated 38 km to the east of Pretoria, has the largest known diamond pipe in South Africa. The mine started operations in1903. The Premier Mine kimberlite pipe is unique in that it is intersected by a 75 m thick gabbro sill at a depth of 400 m below surface. The current mining method used is mechanized panel retreat caving, which has been successfully used to extract ore from the different mining blocks. All caving at Premier Mine is below the sill and failure to exercise good draw control could cause the early ingress of gabbro waste. Draw control at Premier Mine is crucial as it aids in preventing conditions of isolated draw, which results in the early ingress of waste, compaction of the kimberlite and the loss of ore reserves. To assist, an underground vehicle monitoring and control (VMAC) system was installed to enable the effective management of the draw control function. The system has evolved graduallyin collaboration with a local developer. The data accumulated is used to decide the most effectivedraw point loading pattern in order to achieve sound draw control principles. This is achieved as each load can be related back to the draw point of origin. The VMAC data recorded also relates back to specific load-haul-dumps (LHDs), tunnels, ore passes, as well as indications of dates, times and payloads recorded. An interface exists between the VMAC and a draw control linear program. Premier Mine’s VMAC system is not a ‘dispatch’ system but rather a draw control system that caters for Premier Mine’s specific block cave requirements. Premier Mine has realized that successful automation is not dependent on technology alone but rather on the successful implementation thereof.

With a number of new mines at the feasibility stage and beyond and with several pellet capacity expansions well underway to reduce sintering activity, Alex Broad looks at the impact of worldwide environmental legislation on the iron ore industry. 'Environmental impact assessment' has become something of a buzz term in the metals and mining industry over the last few years and is sure to be an integral part of any green or brown-field project worldwide by the turn of the century, if it is not already. Given the number of iron ore projects springing up, most notably in deposit-blessed Australia, it is not surprising that the subject of environmental approval has been raising its green head. At the very least the process can slow down a new mine project, or at worst have it deemed unfeasible but in general a government is unlikely to put up unnecessary barriers to a project with the beneficial financial implications of an iron ore deposit.

The mechanism of gold adsorption on activated charcoal by R. J. DAVIDSON: M.Se., Ph.D. (Rhodes) (Visitor) The adsorption of gold onto activated charcoal is most dependent on the concentration and character of the 'spectator' cations present in the adsorption medium. In the presence of calcium ions, gold is adsorbed as the calcium aurocyanide complex. The degree to which the aurocyanide complexes are adsorbed follows the series Ca> Mt:> H> Li> Na> K, calcium aurocyanide being the most stable complex and potassium aurocyanide the least firmly bound. If a loaded charcoal, where the gold is present as the calcium complex, is treated initially with either sodium carbonate or potassium carbonate solutions, the gold can subsequently be eluted from the charcoal with hot deionized water as either the sodium or the potassium complex respectively. The elution of gold with deionized water appears to be most attractive practically and economically, and has several potential applications in the recovery of gold from dilute solutions.

"Steepening of slopes provides the means to reduce waste extraction and increase ore recovery in open pit mines; however, it may also adversely affect safety by posing a higher risk of slope failure. The implementation of slope monitoring programmes is recommended to manage this risk inherent in steeper slopes. In this paper, the design and evaluation of monitoring campaigns to measure subsurface deformation and groundwater pore pressure in open pit mines is presented. The monitoring programmes were applied to a theoretical case of an open pit mine designed using DeepMine software (BOAMine SpA, 2015). Mine plans were developed based on the initial base case scenario with monitoring programmes considered for four types of monitoring instrumentation: two established technologies, in-place inclinometers (IPIs) and vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs); one emerging technology, the ShapeAccelArray (SAA); and a novel technology under development, the Enhanced Networked Smart Markers (ENSMs). Technical and economic appraisals of the monitoring programmes and sensitivity analysis of the developed mine plans showed that using ENSMs spaced every 4 m had the lowest cost per unit of data gathered. IntroductionSeveral open pit mines have already exceeded their design life and, as they become deeper and reach depths over 1000 m, they face higher rock stress levels and tensile deformations (Stacey and Xianbin, 2004; Stacey et al., 2003). The more complex the conditions in modern open pit mines, the more difficult it is to achieve long-lasting, stable pit slopes and to meet the mine’s economic needs: maximize financial returns, minimize risks to operational safety, achieve optimal ore recovery, and minimize waste extraction (Stacey, 2009). Steepening of slopes provides the means to reduce waste extraction and increase ore recovery (Stacey, 2009; Calderon and Tapia, 2006; Bye and Bell, 2001; Jefferies, Lorig, and Alvarez, 2008); however, it may adversely affect operational safety, as steeper slopes are less stable than shallow slopes (Steffen et al., 2008; Mphathiwa and Cawood, 2014)."

Over a period of three years, since samples first became available, laboratory and pilot plant experiments have been conducted to develop a method of treatment to recover copper and zinc in saleable grades of concentrates from the Prieska complex sulphide orebody. These experiments have been based on adaptations of principles investigated by research workers and applied to similar ore types throughout the world. The differential flotation process finally worked out involves a comparatively coarse grind, flotation of the copper at near-neutral pH with the use of a zinc-cyande sphalerite depressant, followed by flotation of the reactivated sphalerite. This procedure has had such success that the construction of a full-scale plant is proceeding with confidence that the small-scale operations will be duplicated or improved upon. It is to be expected that the large plant will follow the pattern of almost every flotation plant that has been built in that modifications to the circuitry and reagent systems will be made as experience is gained.

Multiple-pass hot-strip-rolling schedules of carbon steels and niobium-microalloyed ferrite-pearlite steels were simulated on a Gleeble 1500 thermomechanical test apparatus. The effects of finishing temperature, coiling temperature, and chemical composition on the as-deformed ferrite grain size and hardness of the steels were determined. Low finishing temperatures and low coiling temperatures both contributed to ferrite grain refinement. Good agreement was found for the microstructure and hardness of the steels between the as-ruled condition and the results obtained from rolling simulations. The progress of recrystalization and precipitation was followed from examinations of the flow-stress curves during the hot-rolling simulations. The flow-stress behaviour during the finishing passes was consistent with the resulting changes in final ferrite grain size. It was found that the no-recrystalization temperature, TNR, is raised by increased additions of niobium.

Development of new technologies and procedures for managing mineral residues and wastes may benefit from a clear understanding of existing tailing management practices. There is a considerable variability in tailing management techniques used in the Australian copper and gold operations, with associated differences and flow-on effects for the mine site water balance. A database was created, capturing a total of 41 copper and gold processing operations in Australia. The database provides information on tailing generation rates, tailing properties (solids contents and particle size distributions) and tailing storage facility (TSF) types and configurations (e.g. total TSF surface area and wetted surface area). Significant variability was found for the above-mentioned parameters. The solid tailing generation rates ranged from 0.5-37 Mt per annum in 2015. Furthermore, both the solids contents and particle size ranges of the tailing were highly site-specific, and largely dependent on the processing flowsheets. Solids contents of tailings ranged from 45-74% by weight whilst P80 sizes of the concentrator (flotation) feed varied from 75-185 μm. The estimated pumping distance was up to 15 km. The presented data can potentially be used to better tailing management strategies by estimating the potential recoverable water and recycling it, thereby thus reducing tailing footprints. This paper outlines the process of improvement utilizing performance monitors and GPS systems on an opencast strip mine. Its primary focus is to maximize coal exposure by draglines and secondly to improve on those processes impacting directly on the dragline operation. The Aquila (DM2/5 system) navigation and monitoring systems were installed on the overburden drills. Their main function is to eliminate manual staking and positioning thereby ensuring a regular pattern being drilled. Holes drilled to planned depth reduce drill metres and it minimizes coal losses and contamination at the coal interfaces. The CAES (Computer Aided Electronic System) will be installed and evaluated on the Caterpillar D11 dozers at Optimum. This system ensures a correct dragline pad elevation through the use of planned elevations and GPS technology to achieve the optimal pad elevations for draglines consistently. The draglines are equipped with a Dragline & Operators Performance Monitor. This monitor allows the operator to control his own performance. It reports on all productivity, method and poor operating techniques. These monitoring systems send critical operational information back to the office. This source data resides in central databases from where it is converted and integrated into management information. To manage an operation means that you as a manager must be able to set objectives and targets and to achieve your goals the activities involved must be measurable.

During the commissioning phase, which is usually the most exciting part of a project involving the design and construction of metallurgical plant, the commissioning engineers interact between the client and the project management. The client wants to see whether all the equipment that he has bought and that, in his opinion, has taken far too long to erect will actually work. Project management expects the commissioning people to con¬vince the client that this is the best design ever developed and that never before have time and money been spent so well. The commissioning team has to fulfil these expectations. Commissioning work is a `shirt sleeve' function, with little of the glamour that is normally associated with fields such as engineering and operations. The team usually works in a partially completed plant with more temporary than permanent services and little (if any) office accommodation, normal working hours do not apply, and the demands made on the team change suddenly and dramatically. This article outlines the activities of the commissioning group and the systems used to smooth the commissioning path.

Ground water and associated pore pressure represent elements which can have a negative impact on surface mining and slope stability. Ground water flow and deformation within a slope influence each other. An increase in pore pressure will result in a decrease of effective stress; and conversely if the pore pressure decreases, the effective stress increases. Slope analysis and slope design calculations require good information on pore pressure distribution around an open pit excavation. Until recently very little pore pressure data was available and assumptions had to be used. Location and design of measuring points depend on geological and structural setting, geotechnical domains and practicality. Good planning and the use of sensitive point piezometers to measure in situ pore pressures means that real-time data can be collected and used for the construction of flow nets, the determination of pore pressure distribution around an open pit mine, the validation of the dewatering/depressurization requirements, the calculation of the efficiency of the dewatering system and finally the use of pore pressure data in slope stability analysis. The recommended layout for a monitoring system, types and design of piezometers, data collection and use of the pore pressure data are presented.

The discovery of the gold-rich Main Reef Group of reefs on the farm Langlaagte in 1886 marked the opening of the richest and most extensive goldfield in history. Mining of the narrow reefs progressed from the outcrops to more than 3,5 km, and has made South Africa the foremost mining country in the world. Changes in the political and socio-economic climate create a new challenge to the gold-mining industry. The most significant of these is the emergence of Black trade unions, with their demands for higher wages, improved safety, job advancement, and abolition of discriminatory legislation. Industrial conflicts on gold mines have risen significantly in the past ten years, and are likely to continue in the future, although the causes of these conflicts may change. Events largely outside the control of the gold-mining industry, such as the improved dollar price for gold and the depreciation of the value of the rand relative to major currencies, have enabled the industry to meet the demands for higher wages and to narrow the wage gap. However, labour productivities have improved insignificantly and are a cause of major concern for the future development of the industry. Continued pressure in the industrial-relations area, the inflation of working costs, and the extension of mining operations to greater depths and more difficult areas create major challenges to mine managements and mining engineers. Significant improvements in mining technology, environmental control, and safety will have to be made to ensure the long-term survival of the industry. The unavoidable introduction in deep gold mines of mechanization on a larger scale to meet the requirements of higher labour productivities and a better and safer underground environment will have a major impact on the cost and management structure of these mines. Engineering will assume a more important role on deep gold mil1es, and management styles and structures will have to be adapted to accommodate these changes. The supply of suitably qualified engineers, technicians, and artisans will be a crucial factor controlling the rate of technological change. The industry is well-geared through its Group system to meet these challenges, and to benefit from the experience gained in the operation of highly mechanized mines. However, changes take time to implement and there is very little time left.

ROM grade variability is one of the most important factors influencing plant product recovery. Due to the influence of grade variability on mine profits, it is deemed important to guarantee a proper homogenization of the ore through a well-planned blending and homogenization pile system from which the ore is reclaimed at an acceptable grade fluctuation. This study tests geostatistical simulation efficiency in predicting in situ grade variability. The methodology is illustrated using a data-set from a large phosphate mine in central Brazil. Additionally, real data obtained at the mine site during January and February 2007 were used to derive the actual grades of each pile formed during this period. Each pile was formed by a selection of blocks within a dig line and these lines mined along the year 2007 were also made available. Given the real grades, it was possible to reconciliate and validate the results predicted by the proposed methodology. The main outcome of this study is the opportunity to check the geostatistical simulation as a tool to quantify the variability of the homogenization system.

BCL Limited operates a nickel-copper flash smelting operation at Selebi-Phikwe, situated in north-eastern Botswana. The original furnace was commissioned in 1973 and produces a high grade sulphide matte, from its own concentrates plus additional custom feeds, which is shipped to refineries in Zimbabwe and Norway for further processing. In 2004 the company embarked on a study to modernize the flash smelting complex, with an emphasis on extending campaign life, improving the furnace integrity and enhancing throughput and process efficiency. First phase initiatives from this exercise, including the fundamental switch to a single concentrate burner operation of the flash smelting furnace, were implemented in July 2007. This paper summarizes experiences prior to implementation, details the specific improvements made to the flash smelting furnace and associated operations, highlights the improved plant performance after modernization, and outlines second phase expansion plans that are currently under consideration.

This paper describes the development and implementation of amine-wide continuous stability monitoring system at the Declines Section, Anglo Platinum Union JV. The Declines Section at Union JV experienced a number of large panel collapses during 2005 and 2006. As well as posing a major safety risk, the panel collapses had a major effect on production since the Declines Section is a semi-mechanized operation. The collapses would often extend into the mechanized strike roadways, resulting in a loss of access to both current and future production faces. The collapses have been largely overcome owing to a change in support design and the implementation of a mine-wide stability monitoring programme. This paper describes the precursors to collapses, which were identified using continuous closure measurements and the remedial measures taken. It also outlines the design and introduction of a robust and reliable monitoring tool, which is now used on a mine-wide basis to provide early warning of large-scale collapses.

"The behaviour of employees is an essential issue in the field of occupational health and safety. Safe behaviour is to a large extent determined by, apart from motivation and preventive actions, an employee’s attitude towards hazard. Thus, attention should be given to defining employees’ attitudes, and following that, to the possibility of correcting and shaping these attitudes in relation to hazard and obeying occupational health and safety regulations. The authors have focused on the analysis of employee attitudes to health and safety regulations in Polish coal mining companies, taking into consideration earlier research on the behaviour of selected employees. The paper presents the methods used to identify Z-type (passive) behaviour. Next, this behaviour is analysed to identify differences between a Z-type employee (enslaved) and other employees. To conclude, the paper presents a list of possible motivational tools that may be used to encourage occupational health and safety in Z-type employees. IntroductionThe technical state of equipment and conditions in the workplace greatly influence occupational safety. However, the deciding factor influencing the rate of accidents in the workplace is the frequency with which employees practise risky behaviour. Factors such as the social conditioning of conduct and motivation for organizing safe work conditions have been included in the notion of creating a positive culture of work safety. This notion has been approved as one of the main goals in management (Studenski, 1996).Safe behaviour is to a large extent, apart from motivation and preventive actions, determined by an employee’s attitude towards hazard. All actions undertaken in the field of occupational health and safety, including training, motivational systems, or imitation of behaviour resulting from a high culture of occupational safety in a given work environment, will not bring about the desire effects if workers have an inappropriate attitude towards occupational health and safety regulations."

Operations of the strip mine at Arnot Colliery are described, and the improved volumetric extraction of the in situ coal reserves that has been obtained by the application of strip-mining techniques is highlighted. An account is given of the major problems encountered during the early stages of the operation with particular reference to overburden removal. coal and parting handling, and transportation. The techniques used in dealing with the problems and the current degree of success in overcoming them are outlined.

The past decade has seen a tremendous revival of the base metal industry in Africa, coupled with an unprecedented increase in the prices of base metal commodities in the last couple of years. The theme of the 4th Southern African Base Metal Conference, is therefore, ?Africa?s base metals resurgence?. This conference will explore the contributions made by the mining and metallurgical disciplines to the base metals industry in Africa. It will also investigate how the base metals industry in Africa can capture the maximum potential from the increase in base metal prices through research, innovative thinking, new ways of operating and project implementation. The conference will also consider the influence of Europe?s REACH programme on the base metal industry in Southern Africa. The conference will include a technical visit to Rössing Mine (Uranium) and will be followed by technical visits to Ongopolo (copper), Skorpion Mine (zinc) and Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation(zinc and lead). The conference, to be held in Swakopmund, Namibia, also confirms the commitment of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), to hosting a regular forum on base metals in the Southern African region. Swakopmund is an ideal conference venue for local and international mining and metallurgical professionals to be exposed to the latest advances in exploration, resource evaluation, projects and technological advances in Southern Africa?s base metal industry. Research is a business activity, and is as different from other business activities as banking is from mining. attempting to use research to solve their problems, managers do not always recognize its unique features, are frequently disillusioned with the outcome. With a view to enabling managers to use research more effectively, an outline is given of the features of research as applied to mining. Types of research are distinguished, and stages in the research-and-development process are identified. The time-scales and resource requirements of the various types and phases of research are explained. Examples of research that have reached implementation in gold mining are given to illustrate the features mentioned. Practical and economic considerations are discussed, and pitfals and recommendations in the use of research are highlighted.
