A simple mathematical model is presented that relates the 'head' developed at the surface of pulp in a tank to the power dissipated by the air in producing it. The value for the head is then used in the calculation of the superficial circulating velocity of the pulp and the area of the overflow, and the product of these two values gives the pumping rate of the pulp. Thus, the superficial circulating velocity, and hence pumping rate of the pulp, are related directly to the flow-rate of the air. This hypothesis was tested with good results in an air-agitated pachuca tank (of 1 m in diameter) fitted with a draught tube. The method can also be used for the prediction of the pumping rates in production-scale vessels.

This paper is concerned with heat flow in the plane of a typical cross-section of a deep underground airway. A new algorithm, called the quasi-steady method, is presented for the calculation of rock temperatures in that plane. The algorithm is used in the computation of heat and moisture transfer rates from the rock to the ventilating air for an airway that is wet on part of its circumference and dry elsewhere. The speed and accuracy of the new method are demonstrated on a microcomputer, and it is argued that this method offers a considerably more versatile and physically meaningful alternative to previous methods for the prediction of increases in air temperature along mine airways. The algorithm is also used to explore the concept of a uniformly wet airway that is equivalent to a partly wet airway in terms of its effect on the ventilating air. The concept is shown to be reasonable, but more complex than one might have anticipated. Finally, several useful extensions and applications of the new method are suggested.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Laboratory-scale testwork was undertaken to recover oxidic copper-cobalt minerals by froth flotation, which requires maintaining a certain sulphide level in the pulp. To improve control of the sulphide concentration, an electronic closed-loop system was designed that responds to the potential output of an ion-selective electrode. The PID control was improved by adding a pre-emptive control and a self-calibration feature; a data logging facility is also included. An inexpensive valve design was incorporated using locally available parts. The operating results of this control design are presented.

The purpose of this article is to show how a representative overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) measurement can be calculated for an underground coal mining bord and pillar batch process. The calculation method, the typical losses (which include planned and unplanned availability losses, coal quality losses, and process rate losses) and the underlying logic are presented and discussed. It is argued that the current traditional underground bord and pillar mining process can currently provide a maximum theoretical OEE of only 49 per cent, while a realistic benchmark target should be in the order of 37 per cent, which relates to an average of 2400 t per shift or 1.2 Mt/a. In addition, it is argued that the current bord and pillar process is the current bottleneck to further improvement past the 2400 t per shift benchmark, and that fundamental process changes will be required to eliminate this bottleneck.

Although the incidence of heat stroke in South African gold mines is small, work continues on its reduction. This paper proposes limits of heat stress that are applicable to South African underground conditions, with the warning that they should not be extrapolated to other situations without careful consideration having first been given to their limitations. These limits of heat stress take physical and physiological considerations into account, and they correspond to there being a 10-6 risk of an essentially nude man developing a rectal temperature in excess of 40°C. It is recommended that further work should be undertaken on the development of equations for the calculation of the heat transfer from clothed men, the derivation of equations that quantify the physiological conductance and sweat rate response of humans, and on establishing the frequency distributions that describe variations in rectal temperature response between individuals in different types of environment.

An extension of lognormal theory and its application to risk analysis models for new mining ventures by B. M. WAINSTEIN*, B.Sc., M.B.A. (Witwatersrand) (Visitor) The lognormal distribution, which remains the most popular distribution model for ore values, is investigated. The T-distribution, an integral part of this theory, is dependent on the sample size, n, and the unknown population parameter, o2, which cannot be integrated out. Hence, o2constitutes a nuisance parameter. In this study, the robustness of the T-distribution to changes in o2 is examined. It is found that the T-distribution is robust for 0,1 <= o2 >= 2,5, a domain covering most practical applications of the lognormal theory. By the use of o2 = 0,7, multiplier factors, which facilitate the computation of the confidence limits, are derived for a comprehensive set of confidence levels.

Design of industrial slurry pipelines is usually performed by applying semi-empirical procedures, requiring a significant experimental study for each project. The mechanisms of suspension flow are not yet completely understood and existing predictive models cover only some aspects of uniform or closely graded particle slurry flows. This paper presents a computational technique for prediction of the velocity and concentration profile in slurry pipelines based on computational fluid dynamics. This model gives numerical solutions for the concentration and velocity distributions in the pipeline cross-section. The model prediction and experimental concentration and velocity profiles were found to be in good agreement. Keywords: pressure drop; concentration profile; particle diffusivity; slurry flow.

The paper describes the difficulties experienced with inferior coking coals as Iscor began using larger blast furnaces for the production of liquid iron. Research conducted at Iscor from 1977 to 1979 showed that benefits could be gained from the use of partially briqueted charges, and it was decided to install briqueting plants at the Vanderbijlpark and Newcastle Works. Details are given of the later plant, which was supplied by a consortium consisting of Voest Alpine, Didier Engineering, and Sumitomo Metal Industries. Sumitomo also supplied information on the optimization of coke quality along the lines of their Sumicoal System. The results have been a marked improvement in coke quality, much better blast-furnace operation, and increased productivity.

This paper ,examines the kinetics of the extraction of uranium from acid sulphate solutions by strongbase anionexchange resins. Parameters such as the concentration of uranium in solution. the agitation of the resin beads in solution. the size of the resin beads. and the degree of cross-linking within the resin matrix were varied. and the effec ts on the kinetics are reported. The applicability, of various empirical kinetic models to the description of the data is assessed, and an attempt is made at the modelling of the rate data in terms of established theories about the diffusion of ions through films of stagnant liquid and through spherical beads of resin.

In order to systematically study the size effect on the shear strength of rock joints, this study used the computer-aided-manufacturing system to reproduce the artificial rock joints for saw-toothed joints, Barton&apos;s standard joint profiles of JRC = 4~6 and 18~20, and natural rock joint profiles. We divided, enlarged, reduced, and assembled these joint profiles to obtain joint specimens of various sizes ranging from 75 mm to 300 mm in length. The shear strengths of these joint specimens were tested under different normal stresses using a direct shear test apparatus. The surface conditions of the joints at failure were also examined. The size and geometry effects on the shear strengths of these joints of various sizes and configurations were evaluated based on the test results. Um die künstlichen Trennflächen für reguläre dreieckige Trennflächen, Bartonsche standardmäßige Querschnitte der Trennflächen von JRC = 4~6 und 18~20 und natürliche Querschnitte von Trennflächen wiederherzustellen, benutzt diese Forschungsarbeit das Computergestützte-Erstellungssystem, damit die Maßstabswirkung auf die Scherfestigkeit von Trennflächen systematisch untersucht werden kann. Die Querschnitte werden geteilt, vergrößert, verkleinert und zusammengesetzt, um Trennflächenproben in Längen variierend von 75 mm bis 300 mm zu erhalten. Die Scherfestigkeit dieser Trennflächenproben wird unter unterschiedlichen Normalspannungen mit einem Direktscherversuchsgerät getestet. Die Querschnittszustände der Trennflächen bei Versagen werden ebenfalls untersucht. Nach den Untersuchungsergebnissen werden die Maßstabs- und Geometriewirkung auf die Scherfestigkeit dieser Trennflächen verschiedener Größen und Konfigurationen ausgewertet. Pour étudier systématiquement l’effet de la dimension des fractures des roches sur leur résistance au cisaillement un système de creation de fractures artificielles à l’ordinateur a été employé. Des fractures artificielles triangulaires, profils de fractures de Barton avec JRC = 4~6 et 18~20, et profils de fractures naturelles ont été reproduits. Les profils des fractures ont été arrangés de manière à obtenir des échantillons de longueur entre 75 et 300 mm. Une boîte de cisaillement a été utilisée pour étudier la résistance des fractures au cisaillement, sous plusieurs conditions de contraintes normales. Les conditions superficielles des fractures après rupture ont été étudiées. Les résultats de ces essais, effectués sur plusieurs échantillons de dimensions et configurations variées, ont contribué à établir l’influence des dimensions et de la géométrie des fractures sur leur résistance au cisaillement.

It is thus understandable that the colloquium held at Wit bank on 3rd and 4th October, 1979, and organized jointly by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the South African Coal Processing Society should have attracted more than 400 delegates.

Palabora Mining Company is operating a copper block cave mine in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The mine was developed in the late nineties with a target ore reserve of 220 million tonnes of carbonatite at 0.69% copper. At 30,000 tonnes per day the operation had an estimated life of mine of approximately 23 years. Cave induced open pit side wall failure occurred in late 2004 with 130 million tonnes of waste reporting to the bottom of the open pit. This failure resulted in potential sterilization and dilution of the ore reserve and subsequent reduction in life of mine. Physical and numerical modelling indicated potential losses of up to 30% of the original ore reserves. Cave Management tools based on throughput principles are utilized to manage the failed waste ingress and ensure an optimum life of mine. Extracting the maximum rate possible, as soon as draw points are commissioned, with the view of achieving the highest production in the short term, is any mining operation?s goal as more money is required sooner. This approach, of course, improves the cash flow but presents a risk in the cave propagation profile as overall draw control is compromised. At Palabora it is evident from a Mineral Resource Throughput Management (MRTM) point of view that maximum production in the short term is not the solution. If high production rates are achieved and the profile of the cave is not manage correctly, this results in failed waste reporting to draw points earlier with adverse effects on grade. This would effectively and significantly shorten Palabora?s Life of Mine. The applications of good MRTM principles are required to assist the value chain for sustained profitability. The process commenced with change management paving the way for a better understanding and a holistic view for all role players.

A computer-aid is described that is designed to calculate steady-state material balances for ore-dressing circuits. The program determines the material balance from a specification of the process condition. No mathematical models or data adjustment techniques are employed. As such the program complements existing simulation and material balance &apos;smoothing&apos; packages. The process condition is specified using performance indicators. These are significant parameters in the industry with which all practising mineral processors are very familiar. The program employs an equation-oriented technique for material balancing and so has had to deal with the difficulties peculiar to that approach.

"Ecological footprint analysis (EFA) was first described in 1996 as a measure of carrying capacity appropriated by human activities. EFA is a resource and emissions accounting tool designed to track the demand on the biosphere’s regenerative capacity. Ecological footprints are increasingly used as indicators of organizational and corporate environmental performance and product sustainability. There is a compelling argument to develop an EFA tool for mining companies.To determine the size of a mine’s ecological footprint, land requirements for all categories of consumption and waste discharge must be summed. This land is only made up of the ecologically productive land and water in various classes (cropland, pasture, forests etc.) required on an ongoing basis to provide all energy and material resources consumed and absorb wastes.A challenge in conducting an EFA for a mine is the shortage of accessible data. Undertaking an EFA for a corporation or individual site entails compiling consumption and emissions data (which can be used for other reporting applications). The footprint results themselves highlight the most critical aspects of an organization’s impact on the environment and provide a platform for focusing actions and for educating the workforce to improve their contribution to best-practice operations. This paper discusses the benefits and challenges of undertaking an EFA for a mining company, and provides examples of the various components of ecological footprints associated with mines, as well as showing how an EFA can be used to understand and communicate some of the impacts associated with mining activities.IntroductionFundamental biophysical and economic limits are now being experienced in many countries around the world. Herman Daly, a former World Bank economist, described this scenario as ‘uneconomic growth’, where the costs of growth exceed the benefits (Daly, 2005). This occurs when the economy’s expansion encroaches excessively on the surrounding ecosystem, sacrificing natural capital. Under such conditions the sacrificed natural capital is more valuable that the resulting economic growth. Consequently, the world faces largescale threats to sustainability and especially to the viability and continued existence of the ecosystems that support human settlements (El Zein et al., 2014). In recognition of this sustainability imperative, mining companies are increasingly concerned with their ecological footprint (EF)."

Tati Nickel is currently operating a hydrometallurgical demonstration plant in Botswana, using the Activox® process developed by LionOre Technology to produce nickel cathode and a cobalt salt from a sulphide concentrate. Cobalt is extracted using Cyanex 272. This reagent also extracts all the iron, aluminium, copper, zinc, and manganese from the nickel stream. Versatic 10 carboxylic acid is then used as extractant to recover nickel from the stream, separating it from calcium and magnesium, and upgrading it to provide a suitable advance electrolyte for nickel electrowinning. However, the selectivity of Versatic 10 for nickel over calcium is limited, and gypsum formation in the extraction circuit is a problem when attempts are made to maximize the recovery of nickel. Mintek has developed a synergistic system with Versatic 10 for improved separation of nickel from calcium and magnesium. Laboratory testwork was conducted on the raffinate of the cobalt solvent extraction circuit to optimize the Versatic 10/Nicksyn? (Mintek synergist) system to be employed. Extraction and stripping parameters suitable for this stream were optimized in the laboratory and then applied on the demonstration plant. A commercial batch (0.5 tons) of Nicksyn? reagent was produced for the demonstration plant. The laboratory testwork results and the demonstration plant performance are discussed in detail in this paper.

For practical reasons all basic input data for the gold mines of the Anglovaal Group conform to a regular grid of averages of sample values within 25-ft squares in the plane of the ore body; individual sample values with their metric co-ordinates are input and converted by a computer program to the basic 25-ft square averages. At the Prieska copper mine the bore- hole data are forced on to a regular grid of 15-m squares corresponding to the coordinates of the grid points nearest to the actual borehole intersections. As for the gold mines the Prieska ore body, although some 3 to 30 m thick, is also dealt with on a two-dimensional basis (Krige, 1973). On the gold mines the data subjected to geostatistical analysis cover: gold values (in cm g/t), uranium values (cm kg/t), and channel widths (cm). The gold and uranium values are normalised on the basis of log (value plus constant) and all the geostatistical analyses are performed on these transformed values. The channel widths usually conform reasonably well to the normal distribution and are, therefore, not transformed. At Prieska the metal grades analysed cover the two main products, copper and zinc, as well as the impurities lead and bismuth; in addition the specific gravity values and the hanging- and foot-wall deviations from a projection plane are also handled. These were all previously used on an untransformed basis but because of problems associated with the proportional effect the lognormal-de Wijsian model is now used for some of the grade variables. "The objective of the study was to determine the type and distribution of rare earth elements (REEs) in the phosphate flotation concentrate from the Esfordi flotation plant in central Iran, in order to understand their leaching behaviour. Samples of the concentrate were prepared and analysed using XRF, XRD, ICP, and EMPA. The Ce, Nd, La, and Y contents were 5608, 2227, 1959, and 679.7 mg/kg, respectively. The main REEbearing minerals in the concentrate are fluorapatite, monazite, and xenotime. Apatite is the chief mineral of the concentrate and the ratio of apatite to monazite is greater than 60. From EMPA analysis, monazite contains a much higher proportion of REEs than apatite, but more than 50% of the REE content of the concentrate is in apatite, as this is the main mineral constituent of the concentrate. During the leaching of REEs in the phosphoric acid production process, more than 99% of the total rare earth values report to the large amounts of phosphogypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) formed during the dissolution reaction. Accordingly, two process options are suggested for treating the Esfordi concentrate. In the first option, the concentrate is treated with 98% H2SO4 at 200–300°C. After digestion and water leaching, phosphorus and REEs are precipitated out of solution. In the second option, the concentrate is treated in a pre-leach stage. The process residue from the pre-leach stage is then subjected to acid digestion at elevated temperature for phosphoric acid production.IntroductionThe rare earth elements (REEs) comprise a set of 17 chemical elements in the periodic table, specifically the 15 lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium. REEs and alloys that contain them are used in devices such as computer memory, rechargeable batteries, cell phones, catalytic converters, magnets, fluorescent lighting, and many more (Krishnamurthy and Gupta, 2004). China supplies about 94% of the REE demand, with the remaining 6% coming from Russia and Estonia, the USA, India, Malaysia, and Brazil (Zhanheng, 2011). Increased industrial development in China has prompted the Chinese government to limit annual export quotas to approximately 35 kt of rare earth oxides (REOs), while non-Chinese annual demand is expected to reach 80 kt by the year 2015. This constriction of supply is being met by the development of many new rare earth mining projects, each of which has its own unique mining and processing challenges (Jordens, Cheng, and Waters, 2013). One of these projects is the Esfordi phosphate project, which is located in Yazd Province in central Iran. The concentrate from the Esfordi flotation plant contains 1.2–1.5% REEs."

Recovered activated carbon fines result from processing of ore and concentrates via cyanide leaching and sorption of valuable metals on carbon at gold-mining plants. This intermediate product is characterised by the particles sized smaller than 0.6 mm and gold grade up to 300-500 g/t. Processing of carbon fines with recovery of valuable metals is not available at many plants due to the lack of optimal technology. The paper describes the testwork and development of an efficient technology to process carbon fines with the recovery of valuable metals into the target gold alloy. This innovative technology involves pelletising of fine activated carbon particles using an organic binder, drying and further firing of pellets in a grate fired furnace at 800-900 °С. The produced ash is subject to sintering with sodium nitrate and hydroxide at 600-700°С. The sintered ash is then leached in water. The insoluble residue containing gold and silver is removed by filtration, dried and smelted to produce gold alloy. Water solution containing sulphur and arsenic is subject to detoxification. Processing of recovered carbon fines according to the developed technology implies the use of standard full-scale equipment. The offered method to treat gold-bearing carbon fines was patented by the Eurasian Patent Office. This article offers a personal and independent view on the threats to the sustainability of the South African minerals industry. It argues that if the six identified threats of insufficient spending on research and development, general standard of education, nationalization, inadequate infrastructure, Aids prevalence and labour inefficiency are not acted upon as a matter of urgency, the future of the mining industry, along with its important contribution to the economy, is at risk.
