The National Institute for Metallurgy was the venue for a one-day colloquium on 'The Chemistry of Processes for the Recovery of Gold on Activated Carbon'. Organized by the South African Chemical Institute (Southern Transvaal Section) in collaboration with the National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) and the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the colloquium attracted tremendous interest from the mining industry. Some 300 metallurgists, engineers, and chemists were brought up to date on advances in this technology made by scientists of NIM and the Anglo American Research Laboratories (AARL).

SYNOPSIS A technique is described for measuring the change in volume in a borehole drilled in a rock mass subjected to stress and strain. It is shown that the volumetric strain or change in volume provides a practical estimate of the the stress in the rock.

Uniaxial tests performed on core from instrumented sites at Amandelbult 1 shaft, Impala 10 shaft and Union Section Spud shaft showed a nonlinear elastic relationship between applied load and induced deformation. This nonlinear behaviour does not appear to be dependent on borehole orientation but in the case of the Amandelbult and Union sites appears to have been influenced by the stress condition of the rock mass at the time of drilling. Cores drilled at these two sites under destressed conditions, such as over a stope, showed a linear elastic response to the applied load whereas most of the cores drilled under relatively high radial stresses were nonlinear. The Impala 10 shaft tests, however, all showed strong nonlinear behaviour irrespective of the stress condition of the rock mass at the time of drilling, although high stress conditions may have influenced the severity of the nonlinearity. A comparison between underground stress change measurements and an elastic model indicated that the rock mass became nonlinear when the virgin stress condition was relaxed to about 10 MPa. The cores for laboratory testing were retrieved from vertical boreholes drilled up from the centre of a stope and from horizontal boreholes drilled over pillars and stopes at about 600 m, 1 100 m and 1 400 m below surface for the three sites respectively. The k-ratios under virgin conditions were estimated from sockets, modelling and stress measurements to be 1.0, 1.3, and 0.5 for the Amandelbult, Impala and Union sites respectively. Of the three sites, therefore, Impala 10 shaft appears to have had the highest virgin stress state. Tests performed on similar rocks from shallower depths at Impala Platinum essentially showed a linear relationship between stress and strain. From the small Impala Platinum rock test database available to the project, it appears that the nonlinear elastic behaviour initiates at this mine from about 1 000 m below surface and seems to become progressively more nonlinear below this depth. In addition, the nonlinear elastic rocks are weaker, have a lower Young?s modulus and a higher Poisson?s ratio than their linear elastic equivalents. Interestingly the tangential Poisson?s ratios of the nonlinear elastic materials are often greater than 0.5 at 50% of the failure stress, suggesting an early failure initiation. The paper describes the microscope and modelling work done to determine the causes of the nonlinear behaviour and discusses some implications of the behaviour for deep-level mining.

After a brief account of the differences between the control of underground fires and those on the surface, the paper describes the analogue detection system used on the mines of the Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Limited. The system comprises Spanair gas analysers, Becon combustion-particle detectors, a telemetering system, a surface signal-recording and-processing system, and an alarm system. The use of the system is described and illustrated.

Throughout the history of mining, underground fires or explosions have killed many hundreds or thousands of people. Fortunately, the safety record has gradually improved as a result of many people’s work on improving safety standards and work practices. However, fire and explosion still remains a threat in many situations. As a result the UK Mines Inspectorate commissioned a project to study materials used underground and to develop a fire/explosion risk assessment system. Such a system has been developed, following the study of incidents, specified fire resistance criteria, and fire safety practices. The final methodology uses a series of check sheets to identify potential fuels and ignition sources, preventative measures, fire/explosion mitigation systems, and items for inclusion in emergency plans.

The Chemwes uranium plant was designed and constructed within fifteen months; commissioning started during. June 1979, and the plant was producing at design capacity four months later. This account highlights the procedures and methods adopted to bring the plant Into production. The description of the various phases includes some details of the early evaluation, and the feasibility and optimization studies; of the financing, project management, design, construction, and commissioning of the plant; and of the training of personnel. Some of the mistakes made and the factors that contributed to the success are also listed.

Lead-based alloys are used as the primary anodes for electrowinning from sulphate-based aqueous systems. Lead anode technology has evolved over the years, migrating from pure lead and lead-antimonial alloys to the present-day lead-calcium-tin alloys for copper electrowinning and leadsilver alloys for zinc electrowinning. Anode technology has also migrated from cast to rolled microstructures in search of improved mechanical properties and higher corrosion resistance. Although great strides have been made in the development of new alloys and production processes, the industry still has unresolved issues related to untimely corrosion, which limits anode life and may lead to higher contaminant levels in the metal being produced. Lead anodes corrode because of the difference in the chemical/electrochemical potential across the microstructural features of an anode. Given a very high purity material, we find that the grain boundary areas corrode significantly faster than the rest of the grain. A balance of alloying element selection and microstructural design allows the grain boundary area to be engineered, thus minimizing grain boundary corrosion. However, operational issues can lead to unexpected corrosion behaviours that we will discuss moving forward. The comments in this work, although directed toward copper electrowinning, can be extended to similar phenomena in other metals electrowon from sulphate media (i.e., zinc, nickel, cobalt, manganese). The life cycle of electrowinning anodes depends on tankhouse operating conditions and maintenance of the anodes, including cleaning and straightening. This paper will focus on the operational aspects of maximizing the utilization of lead anodes for base metals electrowinning.

Owing to the high ore grades in the African Copperbelt and variable acid consumption, agitated leaching is common practice and is used more widely in Africa than in other regions. Two common challenges for agitated leach–solvent extraction circuits are higher presence of colloidal silica in the pregnant leach solution and elevated levels of total suspended solids. Both can negatively affect the physical and metallurgical performance of the solvent-extraction circuit, and lead to higher processing costs or reduced copper production. Operating in organic continuity is preferred to address such challenges, but is not always possible: additional treatment options may be advantageous. For this reason, Solvay recently introduced ACORGA® CR60LT, a new chemical additive to address these concerns. Continuous addition to the pregnant leach solution improves physical performance without negatively affecting Cu transfer or cathode quality. (9.2) However, we know that the centre sample w, gives more information about the block value than the corner sample w2. In the example studied in § 8.4, where w, and w2 were considered to be points, we found that of (w, to W) was nearly one third smaller than o2E (w2 to W), therefore when estimating W one should give more weight to w, than to w2. In general, when evaluating a block W from a set of n samples ws, where WS = l w;w2; ... wn1, a better estimator of µw can be obtained if we give different weights to the sample values, depending on the size and the positions of the samples. INTRODUCTION Some years ago the authors proposed a modified procedure1 for carrying out micum index determinations2. The modifications consisted of using a drum of 50 cm internal length, i.e. half the length of the standard micum drum (a modification also adopted by the B.S.J.3), and the use of a + 25 mm coke instead of + 60 mm coke for the test. The proposed modified test and formulae for converting results obtained from it to standard micum test results and vice versa were based on the results obtained during the investigation of about 200 test cokes made in ovens of the South African Steel Industrial Corporation Limited (Iscor), the Fuel Research Institute co-operating with the experiments. Extensive testing of cokes has since been done at the Fuel Research Institute using both the standard and the modified procedures. The numerous test results obtained during this trial period fully support and strengthen the confidence originally expressed by the authors in the modified testing procedure. The scope of the modified micum index determination has in the meantime been extended by applying the testing procedure also to test cokes made in the Institute's experimental coke ovens, and also in this case the modified procedure has proved its usefulness. A difficulty is that when comparing the characteristics of cokes made in the Institute's two experimental coke ovens with each other and with those of cokes made from similar blends in commercial coke ovens, for example those of Iscor, the index values obtained invariably do not check exactly due mainly to inherent differences between the different types of oven4. For instance, resistance to abrasion of a coke made in Iscor's ovens is always appreciably higher than that of a coke made from the same blend (and having a similar moisture content) in the experimental ovens. This makes direct comparisons and the prediction of quality to be expected from commercial products, based on experimental coke oven results, difficult. It may also be added that workers in Great Britain some years ago reported a similar experience5. In the authors' opinion the main reason for the discrepancy is the relatively low height of the experimental ovens resulting in a much lower static pressure on the charge during coking than that obtaining in a commercial oven. The difficulty was pointed out and briefly discussed in a publication4 which appeared at a time when the micum test for coke evaluation had only just been introduced at the Institute, so that only B.S. shatter and abrasion test results were available for discussion in the publication. Needless to say, the introduction of the micum test by no means solved nor even alleviated the problem. On numerous occasions during the past few years the Institute has had to conduct contract investigations in its experimental coke ovens on behalf of companies which invariably desired an indication of the quality of coke likely to be obtained from certain coals or blends when coked commercially, more particularly in Iscor's type of coke ovens. It was, therefore, essential to accumulate statistical data which would enabe the prediction to be readily made. Fortunately the compilation of comparative coke-quality index values for the three types of oven under consideration has become possible as a result of coking investigations conducted in co-operation with Iscor over a number of years. During this period Iscor, on numerous occasions, kindly made available to the Institute portions of coals and blends coked in the Corporation's coke ovens, thus enabling parallel coking tests to be carried out in the Institute's experimental ovens. In this way enough statistical data became available to establish relationships between coking results obtained in Iscor's ovens and results obtained on similar coal charges in the Institute's ovens. The most practical and acceptable method of overcoming the problems of finding a suitable and simple basis enabling direct comparison between the cokes of the different origins mentioned to be made, is the assignment of descriptive arbitrary quality ratings, as indicated below, to the cokes obtained, it being argued that the quality rating assigned to coke made from a given coal or blend in the different coke ovens under standardized conditions should be the same, irrespective of differences in the index values obtained when subjecting the cokes to the usual coke evaluation tests. The system, which should enable the sponsors of coking investigations in the Institute's experimental ovens to make their own interpretations of the results obtained, is explained below. ARBITRARY QUALITY CLASSIFICATION OF COKES The Ml0m index1 (percentage material smaller than 10 mm after the test) of a blast furnace coke is a measure of its tendency towards breeze formation during handling -a low value indicating a low tendency. This is generally of greater importance under ruling South African conditions, than the M'40 index1 (percentage material larger than 40 mm after the test), which can be regarded as a measure of resistance to shatter. In fact, if the M10m value of a coke as made in Iscor's ovens is higher than about 11, the tendency of the coke to form breeze during handling and in the blast furnace is relatively so high that hardly any notice need be taken of its M'40 value, even if this is comparatively high. For this reason, therefore, much more weight should normally be assigned to Ml0m indices in the quality evaluation of cokes made from South African coking coals and blends, as the coals

Diamondiferous linear beaches in Mining Area No. 1 have been the mainstay of Namdeb?s diamond production for more than 80 years. Most of the onshore beaches have been mined out, but in recent years mining has been extended offshore into the surf zone through a process of beach accretion. A total of 61.6 million carats has been produced from the gravel beaches since their discovery in 1928, and Mining Area No. 1 is considered to have great remaining potential from areas currently submerged under water. To date, the surf zone has remained largely unexplored due to the consistently strong winds, currents, and large waves which make access to this area extremely difficult. This paper describes the processes used in developing a practical methodology for exploration of the surf zone in a domain extending approximately 22 km long in a northwest?southeast direction and 0.3 km wide in a perpendicular direction adjacent to the current Mining Area No 1. The vigorous surf zone poses multiple technical challenges in terms of obtaining geological and diamond information. In order to access the area for sampling, a jack-up walking probe drill platform (PDP) with a 5-inch diameter reverse-circulation drill has been developed to carry out exploration drilling in the dynamic surf zone. The hydraulically driven platform has eight legs, each of which is 18 m long. Four of the legs are in fixed positions on the fore and aft sides of the platform. The other four moveable legs are fitted to sliding frames attached to the port and starboard sides of the platform. The sets of fixed and moveable legs can be raised and lowered by hydraulically powered jacking stations. By alternately lifting and lowering the sets of fixed and moveable legs in conjunction with the frames moving back and forth horizontally, a walking action is performed by the PDP. The platform can walk at a speed of 10?15 m/h, depending on weather and footwall conditions. Optimization of sampling for diamondiferous gravel occurrence in Mining Area No.1 was undertaken through creation of a virtual orebody on which different sample configurations were tested. The input data for the construction of a virtual orebody comprises a set of drilling data, collected from recently accreted areas directly adjacent to the 22 km × 0.3 km target domain. The input drilling data covers only 34% of the domain, and for the purpose of this study, a single realization is deemed to be sufficient. The texture obtained from using only the drilling data to construct a simulation did not make geological sense; hence it was necessary to make use of analog data in order to improve the simulation. The first analog data used consists of the gully patterns found in the metasedimentary Precambrian bedrock footwall. Gullies are, in general, gravel filled and it is fair to assume that gully patterns form a subset of the total gravel occurrence. Total gravel occurrence includes marine terraces (governed by sealevel stands) above bedrock peaks, together with gravel within gullies below bedrock peaks. The second analog ?data? introduced is through the use of ?expert interpretation?. The indicator drilling data is interpreted by expert opinion and the 2-dimensional result is hand-sketched, digitized, and then pixelated. The pixelated data set is then used as input for variogram calculation. This study cannot provide a single definite optimization result as the nature of the data does not permit this. The use of different validation approaches (conditioning data, where available; expert interpretation; and gully pattern data), however, can give a very good indication of how to balance sampling effort with de-risking aspects related to geological continuity. Work undertaken by sampling the simulation will give an assessment of the relative probabilities of determining gravel occurrence in the study area. This study showed that a 50 m × 400 m cross-configuration will be a good initial sample spacing for highlighting areas where gravel may be absent, and further infill drilling may be required. The relative efficiency of a 50 m × 400 m cross off-set sampling configuration has been demonstrated using a trumpet curve versus sampling effort when using kriging as the estimation method. Alluvial diamond deposits covered with a thick overburden cannot be explored effectively and mined profitably with the available conventional techniques. A novel directional drilling technique has been developed and site trials have been conducted at the De Beers Namaqualand Mines situated at the western coast of South Africa. This paper describes the technique developed as well as the results of the site trials. The main task of the project is to develop a tool and a supporting system to achieve a remote exploration and ore extraction method for inaccessible alluvial diamond deposits. The project involves the acquisition of a system, commissioning on-site and evaluating the information obtained during assessment. The project consists of the design -of certain tools and instrumentation for the system, investigations and desktop studies as well as development of the system's logistics. The operating philosophy of the system is based on the keyhole surgery principle. In this study a pilot hole was drilled first, starting from the surface with an inclination to reach deeply seated diamondiferous gravel layers, followed by drilling into a more or less horizontal gravel layer for a certain length and finally pointing-upwards reaching ground surface at a predetermined exit point. The pilot drill bit was then replaced with a larger diameter reamer/mining tool and an HDPE tail pipe was attached behind the reamer. The drill string was retracted back to enlarge the guide hole and flush the excavated ore to the surface through the tail pipe. The material flow in between the sections of the system was' carefully measured to assess and record the gravel recovery rates. Several horizontal holes were drilled at preplanned drill paths to reach and follow the ore layer and the Ore extraction was achieved by means of a reamer/mining tool. Principles of the concept have been proven viable in this investigation.

"The primary objective of any mining business unit is to make profit by extracting, processing, and selling minerals from a particular mineral deposit. It is important to optimize extraction of the mineral resource given time, capital, and space constraints. Mineral extraction is often associated with uncertainty due to variable technical and human factors. Technical factors such as grade distribution, ground conditions, and equipment reliability influence the performance of a mining production system (MPS). The performance of the MPS is also impacted by human factors such as employee skills, health, and attendance. Uncertainty associated with technical and human factors often leads to actual output differing from what was planned. Therefore an in-depth analysis of the significant causes of deviations from the planned outcomes is relevant.In this paper we investigate the empirical relationships between inputs and outputs in a MPS in order to assist management in directing efforts at key production drivers. Once a MPS has been empirically characterized, more effort and resources can be focused on the key decision-making variables (DMVs) in order to meet the planned outcomes.For a typical underground, tabular, narrow-reef conventional drill-andblast platinum mine the face advance, face length mined, number of teams, team efficiencies, and team size have a statistically significant relationship with the centares (m²) produced, which is a key performance indicator (KPI). The production function derived in this study can be used to align the physical, technical, and human factors together to predict the optimal output level. The most significant production lever of the MPS is the face advance. The MPS exists within the mineral extraction link of the complete mining value chain. It represents the stage where mining companies have the opportunity, through production, to start generating returns on the investments undertaken. To improve the climatic environment underground the German coal mining industry has installed refrigerators with a capacity of 300 MW cooling power. One third of this total is accounted for by central refrigeration plants with more than 5 MW capacity. The central refrigeration comprises three stages: mechanical cooling, transport and distribution of chilled water via pipelines and exchange of heat in the air coolers. Of these three stages only the mechanical generation of chilled water has been resolved satisfactorily. Transport (including distribution) and exchange require further technical research. The Mining Institute of the Aachen University of Technology has done extensive studies on this subject, concentrating on controlling the flow of chilled water according to demand in the mine. Additionally, the favourable exchange in the air coolers is taken into account. The studies are based on a model mine which simulates the conditions in deep coal mines in Germany. The simulation program represents firstly the condition of the mine air at the location of the air being cooled, then the heat exchange in the air cooler itself, and finally the transport of the chilled water from the central refrigerator to the consumer. The program also reproduces the seasonal and operational changes in conditions of mine air as well as different air cooler designs. A regulated distribution of chilled water is also suggested. Finally, estimations of costs can be made as an aid for further planning.

This paper shows, through a case study, the impact of multivariate grade modelling upon mine design and mine planning. A deposit explored by drill holes is considered, in which the grades of five elements (copper, silver, molybdenum, arsenic, and antimony) are of interest. Forty alternative models of the deposit are constructed by fitting the joint correlation structure of the grade variables and using conditional cosimulation. In addition, a reference model, obtained by averaging the alternative models, is also considered. The study shows that the resulting mine design (final pit characteristics and production schedules) is sensitive to the grade model under consideration, and that the design based on the reference model may not be optimal when compared to the alternative models based on cosimulation. However, when assuming a given long-term plan and extraction sequence, the grades and net present value (NPV) calculated on the reference model are unbiased with respect to those calculated on the alternative models with the same extraction sequence. The latter allow assessing the possible dispersion of the actual grades and NPV around their expected values, and are useful for the planner in order to determine the probability of meeting given production targets and of exceeding or falling short of given threshold grades. Additionally, unlike cosimulation, the separate simulation of each grade variable leads to unrealistic resource models and to biased results in mine design and mine planning. This approach should therefore be avoided, unless the grade variables are spatially uncorrelated.

Recommendations are given for the design of multi-stage spray chambers in which air flows horizontally through water sprays. A detailed description is given of one such spray chamber at Hartebeestfontein gold mine that is used for bulk cooling of the incoming ventilation air, and that has been constructed according to these recommendations. A method for predicting the performance parameters of horizontal multi-stage spray chambers is given, and the method is illustrated with some examples. The method is equally applicable to spray chambers in which the water, rather than the air, is cooled.
