Right now the South African mining industry is a high-profile, vital contributor to the nation just as it has been for the past one hundred and twenty-six years since the discovery of diamonds-perhaps even further back if the mining of copper, iron ore, tin, and other minerals in earlier centuries is included. The media in 1995, as has been the case over the years, bear testimony to the complex interactions between the industry and its stakeholders: shareholders, government, employees and their unions, training and educational institutions, researchers, markets, the public, and suppliers of goods, services, and infrastructure. The pressures and challenges that the industry continues to face can be summarized as safety and health, competitiveness, and social and environmental responsibility. There are no surprises here. The motivation for the industry to perform well in these areas is clear; the focus I intend to bring is on the most important tool required for success-that of good mining engineering. This Address sets out - to review the mining aspects that have been discussed in South Africa during the first five years of the decade, a discussion that shows the return of the country as an important mining forum, confirms the role of professional institutes and associations in the development of mining engineering, and brings current relevant issues into focus - to highlight the vital role of mining engineering in the industry, and to identify priorities for the remainder of the decade - to provide the prospective mining engineer, the mining-engineering student and trainee, and the practising mining engineer and mine manager with a better appreciation of the mining-engineering discipline. institutes and ssociations

The Kriel Colliery is an Anglo Coal mine which is contracted with Eskom to produce No. 4 seam for Kriel power station. The mine previously found it uneconomical to mine No. 5 seam due to the low qualities and tonnages of the seam, both at the opencast and underground sections. An area has been encountered for the first time at Kriel Colliery opencast pit 5, where the tonnage and qualities of No. 5 seam warrant further investigation. The primary reason for the investi¬gation of No. 5 seam by Kriel Colliery is because of the advantage of the high selling price (R450/t) that the market is currently prepared to pay for the No. 5 seam. The aim of this project is to mine No. 5 seam economically without interrupting No. 4 seam mining operations. The problem is that the equipments that are currently being used at the mine belong to Eskom and are dedicated to mining No. 4 seam only, not No. 5 seam. Through geology investigation, it is found that the whole No. 5 seam (No. 5 seam upper and lower) has an average thickness of 1.8 m. It also contains a parting of carbonaceous shale which divides the seam into two parts. No. 5 seam upper contains less tonnage compared to No. 5 seam lower. The calorific value and ash content of No. 5 seam lower is far better than No. 5 seam upper, but would still require washing the coal. This makes No. 5 seam lower the preferred seam to mine because it meets the requirements of the customer which is Highveld Steel. It is a coincidence that the area containing No. 5 seam under investigation encounters high overburden problems. The problem of drilling to No. 4 seam was going to be encountered because the thickness of the overburden ranges from 35 to 39 m. The Gardner Denver at the mine can drill blastholes only to a depth of 34.5 m, meaning the full overburden will not be drilled at once. This means the mining of No. 5 seam will do favours for Eskom because the overburden thickness will be minimized. This then led to an agreement between Anglo Coal and Eskom to mine No. 5 seam because both companies benefit from the project. In order to identify a suitable mining method for No. 5 seam lower, literature studies took place. It is found that San Juan mine from the USA has similar geological features to Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam. Through comparisons, it is found that truck and shovel mining would suit the geology of Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam since San Juan mine is using it. The sequence of mining No. 5 seam lower allows for a clearance of two cuts between the truck and shovel operation and the dragline. The mining sequence of No. 5 and 4 seam will be in the order of top soil removal; soft overburden pre-stripping; pre-strip drilling; pre-strip hard overburden; No. 5 seam lower coaling; interburden drilling and blasting; interburden stripping and No. 4 seam coaling. Financial evaluation of the project shows that a contractor will charge Kriel Colliery (Anglo Coal) approximately R 102.2 million to mine No. 5 seam successfully. The sales of No. 5 seam lower will provide a profit of R99.4 million at a yield of 70% from the washing plant. The project is beneficial to both Eskom and Anglo Coal because Eskom will have eliminated the problem of pre-stripping and Anglo Coal will generate additional profit. Through investigation and analyses of the project, it is proven to be viable and should take place. This is after looking at the advantages that the project has for Anglo Coal and Eskom. Mining professionals recognize the need to continuously evaluate and refine mine planning standards and scheduling. We must examine our current reality, and evaluate the following: •How well do our planning standards represent the actual mining process? •To what extent do they support the requirements of the downstream mining activities? •How we apply them to operational management and control? In most operations, mine-planning standards are global averages. Little differentiation is madein quantifying key planning variables. Often standards used in the long-term, are applied to the short-term, and the standards and scheduling precedents are only reviewed occasionally. Mine-planning standards applied to production schedules are often only focused on the management of functional mining performance, and play no role in managing the requirements of down stream processing. Many mining operations are characterized by high levels of fluctuation, and typically incorporate a wide range of factors and adjustments to compensate for deviations from performance targets, in mining operations as well as for the other business areas. The reason for using global averages is because of a lack of understanding of the causes of deviations that occur through the process, and the impact that they may have on the performance of the business as a whole. Average standards and factors are often used to quantify the variability in a system. From these average values, measurement standards and performance targets are derived for the planning and execution environments. During the execution of a plan/schedule there will be deviation in actual performance and the planned ‘average’ standards. In reality the ‘average’ conditions seldom occur and the impact of variability and interdependency are seldom constant or predictable. The predictability of variability and interdependency is further complicated by the fact that mining conditions have a role to play in the actual production performance, and they too are variable. By developing the throughput knowledge of our production systems, we can better understand the nature of variability and the interdependency within the systems as well as the impact of interdependency between the links in our production chains. With this knowledge, planning standards and scheduling precedents can be better defined and sensibly differentiated. This will improve planning and management of ore utilization, mining production and the effectiveness of processing. As a result the business will be more stable and predictable and business performance will be improved. The purpose of this paper is to describe: •At a high level, the scope for refining and differentiation in mine planning standards, and incorporating geological and plant parameters into mine scheduling. This will improve planning and scheduling and the overall performance of the mine. Given our current level of scientific knowledge and the technological tools at our disposal we should be able to plan and schedule production so that we can manage pro-actively and improve business performance. In doing so we can also improve reconciliation and value tracking through mining and processing •The flexibility and functionality of the XPAC planning and scheduling tool that will enable a throughput management approach.

The use of a dense hangingwal-support configuration extending right up to the face would enable greater levels of safety and productivity to be achieved in stopes, and becomes a practical proposition if water jets are used for stope cleaning. Such an arrangement opens the way for extending the use of water hydraulic power to the whole stoping operation. This, in turn, can provide further productivity benefits and significant savings in working costs. With al the necessary equipment being available, such a system could be introduced immediately, although the designs of props and rockdrills are not yet ideal.

The advancement in Information Technology has resulted in a change in workflow practice in our Mineral Resource Management (MRM) offices on the mines and at our corporate office. This paper discusses the AngloGold approach in defining an IT strategy for MRM, a brief overview of systems usage and benefits. AngloGold has gone through a transformation phase and has positioned itself as a world-class, low cost producer. To support this objective, an initiative has been launched to provide the MRM division with an integrated MRM technical suite of systems with support of a Management Information System. Technical systems for a tabular orebody are not freely available and hence it took AngloGold almost seven years and a significant amount of capital to develop an integrated suite of technical systems. AngloGold MRM IT adopted the typical Zachman framework (value chain) approach in the analysis process and formulated the final deliverable in terms of AngloGold’s strategy. Major benefits have been realized through the ability to change planning scenarios in a short period of time and hence be able to increase reserves and NPV. The development of MRIS, which will become the flagship in AngloGold’s portfolio of systems is in phase two and this system will allow AngloGold to publish Resources and Reserves as per SAMREC and the JORC Code at will. The availability of information at all levels of the operations has made making decisions easier and hence some specialized reports such as the Basic Mining Equation were developed from the Corporate Data warehouse and from the MRM reporting database. Decision Support Systems(DSS) such as Business Objects and Oracle Express are now being used to assist in the process. The decision to use Business Objects to replace SAS reporting as the core reporting tool has resulted in the empowerment of the user and major cost saving as far as the use of consultants to set up standard reports.

"A downward trend in tyre life on haul trucks at an open pit iron ore mine prompted an investigation into the current tyre management strategy in order to improve tyre life. ‘Best practice’ was compared to the current tyre management strategy at the mine to determine aspects that could be improved. Aspects that showed significant room for improvement included employee tyre awareness, tyre pressure maintenance, and road conditions. For each of these aspects a plausible alternative was suggested.A new tyre management strategy was formulated as a step-by-step guide on how to implement the proposed changes. Each step introduces new initiatives but at the same time builds on the previous step’s success. A sensitivity analyses was performed to determine the impact of the proposed changes, with the variables being the reduction in the percentage of premature tyre failure, and the reduction of the site wear rate.The ‘most likely’ scenario showed an increase in tyre life of 41% for the Komatsu 730 trucks and 105% for the CAT 777 trucks if the entire tyre management model is implemented. This would result in a possible annual saving related to tyre usage of R9.2 million. OverviewThe study focused on the tyre life on the main haul fleet at an open pit iron ore mine. The haul fleet consisted of 17 Komatsu 730 (180 t) haul trucks and 12 CAT 777 (90 t) haul trucks.The haulage operation consists entirely of tyre-based haul trucks. Five per cent of the total mining budget is related to tyre costs. Since 2012 there has been a steady decrease in tyre life as measured in operating hours (Figure 1) due to the high percentage of tyres that fail prematurely. In 2014 a total of 41% of all tyres failed prematurely and 61% were classified as ‘worn out’."

The copper industry is cyclical with the price determined by market forces (i.e. the balance between supply and demand for the metal.) The period of each cycle typically varies between 6 to 9 years. These cycles drive decision making for exploration, new project and mine development, mine closures, process improvement, research and development, and technological innovation. The gold industry is fundamentally different from copper in that supply and demand do not, alone, determine metal price and many other factors play a key role, including global and regional financial conditions, political stability, and the global future economic outlook. However, the gold price experiences trends and longer term cycles that similarly drive business decision making. This paper examines developments in the copper industry that have occurred over the past few price cycles (approximately 20 years) and explores how the lessons learned can be applied to gold extraction. A number of specific examples and opportunities are discussed in detail, including; technology development and innovation, cost control and business improvement, material characterization, comminution equipment, biological heap leaching, and concentrate pressure leaching.

The inverse velocity method has proven to be an effective approach for predicting slope failures in surface mines by analysing displacement monitoring data. However, the accuracy of inverse velocity method predictions is significantly affected by instrumental noise and natural environmental variations, which influence the identification of different deformation stages. To enhance predictive accuracy, this study applies and evaluates three filtering techniques to velocity time series data: Exponential smoothing filter, short-term smoothing filter, long-term smoothing filter and also compares it to raw data (no filtering). A refined prediction framework, that is, filtered inverse velocity method analyser, is proposed to improve slope failure forecasting in surface mining operations. The results demonstrate that filter selection plays a crucial role in optimising failure time predictions, offering valuable insights for geotechnical monitoring and early warning systems in surface mines.

One of the most critical and complicated steps in mine design is a suitable mining method selection based upon geological, geotechnical, geographical and economical parameters. Since there are many factors involved in mining method selection, the decision-making process is very difficult. In this paper, the Analytical Hierarchy Process, with 13 criteria, is used to develop a suitable mining method for the Golbini No. 8 deposit in Jajarm (Iran). Six alternatives (conventional cut and fill, mechanized cut and fill, shrinkage stoping, sublevel stoping, bench mining, and stull stoping) are evaluated. The studies show that the suitable mining method for this deposit in the present situation is the conventional cut and fill method.

It is well known that carbon management is essential for minimising soluble gold losses in carbonin- leach (CIL) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuits. Even so, carbon measurements remain predominantly a manual operation with a low amount of control and automation around CIL and CIP reactors. Carbon inventory, i.e. knowing the carbon concentration in each reactor, is crucial for good carbon management. CarbonSense, a novel in-situ measurement system, was therefore developed for continuous monitoring of the carbon concentration in each reactor and paves the way for more advanced control in gold operations. The carbon management and optimisation system is based on Outotec® HSC Sim dynamic process simulations where each process component is modelled in detail. Generated models are validated with real data from a particular operation. The simulator will allow for the carbon control sequence to be realistically tested and the efficiency optimised by controlling the feed and discharge pumps in a hazard- and risk-free process environment. Furthermore, by combining CarbonSense and Outotec® gold courier (online soluble gold measurements) continuous feed-forward and feedback information can be obtained. The optimiser will then define the best running parameters based on the cost function of gold production versus intrinsic factors such as utility costs and adsorption time. Eventually, the application can be installed parallel with a real process island and it can be continuously calibrated with real-time process data. The dynamic model will then create future predictions for the entire process island. The example case presents a CIL circuit, which is simulated using Outotec® HSC Chemistry Sim and operated through Outotec® ACT (Advanced Control Tool) application. Although backfilling has been in operation for many years, the methods for selecting appropriate slurry dewatering aids have, in some cases, been rather unsophisticated. This has led to many misconceptions regarding the role of the dewatering aid and its various means of application. Testing procedures employed in the correct selection of any practically applied dewatering aid must mirror the actual working processes in which they are to be used. This constraint necessitates the development of complex testing methods when applied to backfilling. The current testing procedures were scrutinized and their various merits noted. From this study a series of testing methods was evolved which incorporate the best aspects of these testing procedures with novel ideas which would eventually result in the correct selection of the dewatering aid. A major consideration in the application of any of these methods is the modus operandi of the backfilling process, and the relevance of the tests to the process. This work attempts to consolidate the testwork performed in the past and suggest new approaches in the correct selection of acceptable dewatering aids for backfilling.

The near depletion of high-grade ores, among other factors, has necessitated the consideration of alternative PGM sources. Various factors in the metallurgical processing of ores result in valuable minerals being lost to the tailings, and hence, PGM tailings are a possible alternative PGM source. However, as the value residing in PGM tailings remains unquantified and uncharacterised, there is a challenge in knowing the recoverable fraction of value contained in PGM wastes. This paper outlines the in-situ techniques of oxygen uptake and EDTA extraction for their possible use for determining the recoverable value in PGM tailings. As part of a broader digital technology-enabled transformation programme, a major mining company is systematically implementing Advanced Process Control (APC) solutions and associated instrumentation throughout their operations. This paper highlights the approach and benefits of this holistic approach for a specific instrumentation installation, and APC installation at a South African coal processing plant. For the coal processing plant under consideration, a systematic approach was followed. Process sections/units are considered from upstream to downstream processing. APC solutions are designed for each process section and each process section is interrogated in terms of availability of sufficient process measurements to ensure stable, capable, and ultimately, optimised performance. Where insufficient process measurements are available, instrumentation upgrades are implemented. Finally, APC solutions are implemented, and evaluated in terms of productivity, safety, health, and environmental benefits. For the flotation section, an opportunity was identified to install froth sensors. The installed froth sensors provide measurements on froth velocity, bubble size, height, colour, and stability. The improved visibility that the froth sensors provided on the flotation process resulted in quick gains in terms of productivity: for example, instability in the feed to the flotation section could be quantified. This resulted in targeted process troubleshooting in an upstream thickener, and subsequent improvement of process stability, and reduced feed variance. The measurements from the froth sensors were further integrated in an APC solution. Proportional mass pull contributions per cell and per line can be inferred from the froth sensors, serving as controlled variables, while pulp level set points serve as the manipulated variables. On-off tests indicated that the advanced process control solution provided increases in yield and product quality.

Exxaro Sands KZN produces?among other heavy mineral products?high titania slag, which is used as feedstock to the pigment industry. The titania slag is produced from the smelting of ilmenite in two 36 MW DC furnaces. In this smelting process carbon monoxide gas is produced. This gas is cooled, scrubbed and washed to remove entrained dust. This paper provides details on the gas cleaning plant system and the chemistry, mineralogy and size distribution of the particulate material contained in the off-gas stream. Characterization of the dust shows that is consists mainly of ilmenite, but with relatively high levels of SiO2and MnO. Smelting of the dust in a 500 kW DC furnace was carried out to investigate the potential for recovering valuable elements from the dust.

The effect of the reactivity of lime on desulphurization efficiency in the basic oxygen furnace A. A. HEJJA, Dipl. Ing. (Budapest) (Visitor) D. D. HOWAT, B.Sc. (Glas.), Ph. D., F.I.M. (Fellow) P. R. (Member) The iron charged to the basic oxygen furnace at the steel plant of Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation has a relatively high sulphur content. Considerable emphasis is therefore placed on the reactivity of the lime. An investigation of the lime used at the steel plant showed that its reactivity had deteriorated considerably both during transport from the supplier (Northern Lime Company) and during storage and handling at the steel plant. The deterioration on the steel plant is the more severe, and is due to hydration and carbonation. Rapid deterioration is a characteristic of highly reactive lime when exposed to the atmosphere. Plant tests showed that the desulphurization efficiency decreases with a decrease in the reactivity of the lime. The addition of slag rich in manganous oxide to the furnace considerably improved the efficiency of desulphurization that can be achieved with limes of lower reactivity and with lime that has deteriorated. A decrease in particle size of lime of lower reactivity greatly increased the desulphurization efficiency. Less lime of higher reactivity is required for the same degree of desulphurization to be achieved. Lime of higher reactivity gives rise to slags with lower ferrous oxide contents and hence the steel yield is increased.

One of the key issues facing gold producers is the management of cyanide and the implementation of the International Cyanide Management Code. Many operations now use cyanide destruction processes to ensure that the material being discharged to the tailings dam is compliant with regulatory requirements and the International Cyanide Management Code. One of the problems for operations is the quantification of both cyanide species and their reaction products throughout the leach and destruction circuits. Therefore methods have been developed utilizing high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to measure free cyanide, cyanide complexes of metals such as copper and iron, and other species formed from reactions in leaching and cyanide destruction, including cyanate, thiocyanate, and sulphur species (eg. sulphite, thiosulphate and sulphate). This enables a complete mass balance for cyanide and sulphur in both leaching and cyanide destruction. This paper outlines the methodology which has been developed and discusses the application of these methods in the fundamental research currently being conducted on the impact of sulphide minerals in cyanidation and cyanide destruction chemistry.

Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of seventeen and the standing committees held 45 meetings. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R4,608 compared with R2,124 last year. This deterioration can be attributed largely to two important factors, namely an increase in secretarial fees of RI, 789 and an increase in the loss on the Journal from R2,343 to R3,508. In addition, our contribution to the expenses of the Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers increased by R607 from R549 to R1,156. The increase in secretarial fees is partly due to our increased demand for services and partly to increased salaries. In order to maintain its essential services it has been necessary for the A.S. & T.S. to increase salaries in order to keep pace with commerce and industry. With regard to the Journal, we did not expect immediate dramatic results from the changes that were effected as from the beginning of last year in the arrangements for publication. However, the improvement has been even slower in materialising than we expected. This situation is being watched carefully and we will not hesitate to make further changes if necessary. It became clear early in the year that the financial position was deteriorating and your Council decided that it was essential to meet the situation by raising subscriptions and entrance fees. At the same time it was decided that there are no grounds for a distinction between Town and Country members and that in future the scale for the compounding of subscriptions should be based on anticipated future membership, rather than past membership. These changes have had only a minor effect on the accounts under consideration. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R132 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4,338. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures decreased during the year from R13,059 to R6,567, while accumulated funds now amount to R17,959 compared with R22,567 last year. It will also be noted that we are holding R25,844 on behalf of the Symposium on Opencast Mining. This paper presents some of the work carried out in order to improve the tapping process in silicon production, with special focus on the environmental and the safety standards. Some of the modelling work that has been done to improve the understanding of the process is described, together with the resulting implementation to improve tapping standards.

A literature survey of methods suitable for the determination of cyanides in process streams and effluents is presented. Of the large number of methods published, 92 are examined in detail, emphasis being placed on the selectivity of the methods, i.e. the extent to which they enable one to distinguish between ionic cyanide and metal-cyanide complexes. Methods designed for the determination of 'total cyanide' (i.e. ionic cyanide as well as coordinated cyanide) are evaluated critically. Other aspects of the methods are also considered, such as sensitivity, accuracy, speed, and freedom from interferences.
