In recent years attempts have been made to develop software packages for shallow seismic refraction data analysis. In most cases, mainframe computers were used which were generally non-interactive, did not support graphics and were unfriendly to operate. With these facts in mind, a user-friendly interactive processing package written in PASCAL has been developed for the IBM PC. The package allows the following operations to be performed. (1) data tying, equalisation of reciprocal and common shot times; (2) overburden velocity analysis; (3) refraction leg identification on time-distance plots; (4) elevation correction of refractor data; (5) forward and backward phantoming; refraction leg extrapolation; (6) 'bedrock' velocity analysis; (7) 'time-depth' plot computation; (8) depth calculation. Numbers (6) - (8) above involve Palmer's generalised reciprocal technique of refraction data interpretation. The program is extremely flexible and makes much use of interactive high resolution graphics and 'popup' onscreen menus. The velocity analysis sections have statistical routines built in to provide error estimation. The programs allow data interpretation to take place in the field with a portable microcomputer while the data are still being collected; this is obviously not possible with any cumbersome mainframe-based software. Hence it becomes possible to see the effects of varying the data collection parameters (such as geophone spacing) upon the resulting interpretation and so enable adjustments to be made where necessary. Hard copies of the data may be obtained at all stages of the interpretation process using a small (A3) plotter, or the graphics may be dumped to a dot- matrix printer if a suitable plotter is not available.

"Cyclic voltammetry experiments were conducted on copper and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) in the absence and presence of ethyl xanthate, and compared to mass-balanced EH–pH diagrams. The results for copper duplicate those found in the literature and confirm xanthate chemisorption. However, the, results indicate that chalcopyrite oxidizes to chalcocite (Cu2S) and only afterwards is chemisorption observed due to small currents appearing with xanthate. This phenomenon suggests that the mineral's hydrophobicity is induced by more than dixanthogen and copper xanthate. Hydrophobicity was found to be pH-dependent over a range of alkaline conditions (pH 7–11) at narrow potentials (0 to –200 mV). An EH–pH diagram for chalcopyrite with xanthate is presented to illustrate the conditions under which chalcopyrite would be hydrophobic and thereby more thoroughly explain the results in the literature. IntroductionSulphide minerals are generally concentrated from ores by froth flotation, a physiochemical process that induces separation based on differences in hydrophobicity. In this process, a gas is bubbled into a slurry and the minerals that are hydrophobic (water-repelling) adhere to the bubbles and float to the surface while the hydrophilic (water-loving) minerals remain in the slurry. With sulphide minerals, the hydrophobicity is generally established in two ways. The first is by the addition of a collector, which is a heteropolar molecule with a reactive inorganic head group and an inert organic tail. Typically, the head group bonds with the sulphide mineral surface by adsorbtion either chemically (chemisorption) or physically (physisorption) or by complexing with atoms that solubilize somewhat at the surface (surface precipitation). These interactions leave the organic tail protruding from the mineral surface, thereby inducing hydrophobicity. The second method is by oxidation of the mineral surface to form a layer that is metal-deficient/sulphide-rich or comprised of elemental sulphur. Because the layer mimics naturally hydrophobic sulphur, this enables ‘collectorless’ flotation. Furthermore, this oxidation phenomenon adds an electrochemical dimension to the understanding of sulphide mineral flotation."

Hydrometallurgical recovery of rare earth elements from phosphors obtained from end-of-life fluorescent lamps involve leaching followed by extraction of dissolved metals from solution. The similar properties of rare earth elements make selective recovery of individual elements challenging. The aim of the paper was to investigate the extraction of primarily Ce and Tb from a hydrochloric acid leach solution also containing other REEs (Y and Eu) as well as impurity metals (Ca and Al). Batch solvent extraction tests were performed with di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (DEHPA) at various extractant concentrations, pH conditions and organic-to-aqueous ratios. Extraction isotherms and separation factors for the range of conditions tested in the project are presented in the paper. Separation of individual REEs was not possible at the conditions investigated, but a mixed REE product can be obtained in a single extraction stage operated at a pH of 0.5 using 1 M extractant at an O/A ratio of 1; these conditions resulted in complete Y and Eu, 95 % Ce and 99 % Tb extraction with Ca and Al coextraction below 7 %. A better quality mixed REE product can be produced by operating at lower pH and extractant concentration conditions, but this would require a larger number of extraction stages. Conditional bias occurs when the expected value of the true grade conditional on the estimated grade is not equal to the estimated grade. It is a quantification of how the average of estimates differs from the true value. Conditional bias is present in all resource estimates due to the unavoidable properties of kriging, and indeed all linear estimation (regression) methods. In a mining resource estimation context, the degree of conditional bias is dependent on the spacing of the conditioning data; more data leads to the expectation of less conditional bias This paper discusses conditional bias from two perspectives: 1. 2. Estimates seeking to eliminate, as much as possible, conditional bias; and Estimates that accept a larger amount of conditional bias in resource models, in order to achieve a specific outcome. The problem of conditional bias in estimation can only be fully appreciated if the objective or purpose of a resource model is understood. There are instances where conditional bias should be avoided because it is not reasonable to make decisions using estimates that are known to be wrong in expected value; for example, when making a final decision in grade control with respect to the destination of the material. In most instances in the mining resource estimation context, however, the estimated values will not be “final estimates”, but “interim estimates”, meaning that in the future more data will be obtained, and the ”interim estimate” will then be updated. In this context, the most useful resource model is an interim model that is able to predict the final model estimates, despite not having all the data available that will be collected in the future. This is the objective, for example, of a recoverable “long-term” model developed prior to operating a mine, for example at the feasibility stage. It attempts to predict the ore that a processing plant will receive, well into the future. In such cases, it can be unequivocally demonstrated that conditional bias is not only unavoidable, it is a necessity.

Biooxidation, a biohydrometallurgical process, utilizes a mixed microbial consortium to mediate the dissolution of refractory gold-bearing ores to enhance gold recovery during cyanidation. Recognition of water as a critical resource has prompted improved water management strategies within mining and minerals processing. Bioremediated wastewater from the cyanidation tailings provides a potential water source to supplement the water required for the biooxidation circuit, reducing freshwater extraction. Gold biomining operations have typically been reluctant to recycle this wastewater due to the potential inhibitory effects of cyanide and thiocyanate (SCN-) on the microbial population. Historical process upsets suggest that the microorganisms are sensitive to SCN- concentrations as low as 1 mg/L. However, effective bioremediation processes resulting in effluents with low or negligible SCN- concentrations may allow gold biomining plants the opportunity to recycle available water. Microbial activity as well as alteration in community structure were monitored as a function of increasing SCN- concentration over the range of 0 mg/L to 5 mg/L to investigate the response of the biooxidation community to potential SCN- spikes resulting from upsets in the remediation process. Appropriate microbial growth and ferrous iron oxidation activity with a nominal shift in community structure were observed at SCN- concentrations up to 1 mg/L. Thiocyanate concentrations above 1 mg/L resulted in the complete inhibition of ferrous iron oxidation activity. This was attributed to Leptospirillum ferriphilum’s sensitivity to SCN-. Exposure to a SCN- concentration of 5 mg/L resulted in a lower cell concentration and a significant increase in growth lag time, and the absence of L. ferriphilum from the microbial population. At. caldus and Ap. cupricumulans were still present at 5 mg/L SCN-, although Ap. cupricumulans was unable to oxidise ferrous iron at this SCN- concentration. It was concluded that recycling bioremediated cyanidation tailings wastewater within the biooxidation circuit is feasible; however, to retain process performance, SCN- concentrations should not exceed 1 mg/L. In 1988 the Japan Iron and Steel Federation started a research-and-development programme known as DIOS (direct iron-ore smelting). Eight Japanese integrated steel producers and the Coal Mining Research Centre, subsidized by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, are involved in the project. The aim of the programme is to have a 500 v/d pilot plant for the production of iron via an oxygen-coal in-bath smelting converter in operation by mid 1993. The three main components of the DIOS process are as follows: ?a fluidized bed for the pre-reduction of iron-ore fumes ?in-bath smelting reduction in a converter ?off-gas reforming by the addition of coal fines. The main drive is to provide a smelting process that is more energy-effective, using coal instead of coke and/or electricity. The advantages claimed include inter alia ?direct use of fine iron ore ?direct use of non-coking coals-low coal consumption ?low capital expenditure-replaces costly coke ovens, agglomeration plants, and the blast furnace ?economical production on mini-plant scale ?less of an impact on the environment. This concept of 'direct steel has been carried over to the production of stainless steel direct from the ores, again bypassing such energy-intensive units as the submerged-arc furnace for the production of ferrochromium. A number of Japanese companies have indicated a certain amount of success. Several interacting elements are recognized that could have a productivity-limiting aspect. The possibility of the direct production of stainless steel from chromite is discussed briefly with reference to the Highveld of the eastern Transvaal as a possible site for such a plant

PorterIn introducing his paper, Mr Roman said that whereas in manufacturing plants the yearly production levels were usually chosen to produce the largest annual cash flow, in a mining operation, the raw materials (ore) were exhaustible so that the production had to be scheduled to maximize the total net present worth of the operation. This optimum production schedule could be determined by using dynamic programming. The required information was readily available to management at most mines. The 'possible operating range' of production rates lay between the rate with the highest profit per ton. and that with the highest profit per year. The optimum production rate started typically at the top of this range and decreased slowly as the deposit was depleted.Dynamic programming was used to determine several production schedules for a hypothetical mine-mill complex. The effects of changes in the ore grade estimates, size of deposit and acceptable rate of interest on the production schedule were taken into account. Apart from the fact that the net present worth of the overall profits was larger than that obtained by conventional methods, it appeared from the cases studied that the amount of metal recovered was also greater.Dr it P. King commented that this was a very interesting application of dynamic programming. He pointed out, however, that the market price of the metal was likely to vary significantly and randomly during the life of the mine, and he suggested that the problem should, therefore, be reformulated as a stochastic dynamic programming problem.If the price of the metal rose to abnormally high levels, a much higher than normal production rate could be expected. The results of analyses given in Table 5 showed that the production rate was a function of market price. In his view the stochastic problem could be solved just as easily as the deterministic problem.In reply to a question by Dr King as to whether the function relating recovery to production rate (Table I) was based on real data, the author replied that it was based on the results of an analysis conducted at the Union Carbide Corporation's Pine Creek tungsten mine in California.Dr D. M. Hawkins stated that costs were incurred when the production rate was altered, for example, in appointing or laying off staff, and that in practice it may be necessary to take these costs into account in finding the optimum production rate. Mr Roman replied that, while normal administrative costs were accounted for, the additional costs incurred in appointing and laying off staff were not taken into account."

The efficiency of high capacity SAG mills which consume large amounts of energy depends on the grinding and slurry discharge systems. A 9.7 m × 4.8 m SAG mill with radial pulp lifters is used at the Sarcheshmeh copper complex grinding circuit. The process audit indicated that the pulp discharge system was not efficient, judging by the amount of slurry flow back and carry over. These events limited the discharge rate and increased the wear rate of the lifters and grates. With the objective of finding a new design for pulp lifters, a 3D DEM software (KMPCDEM ©), along with the plant operational data and photographic evidence was used. The KMPCDEM © software was used to compare the efficiency of the radial and curved pulp lifter design based on the material flow. The slurry flow was analysed in terms of ease of discharge and lifter wear rate. It was found that changing the radial pulp lifters to curved pulp lifters could improve the discharge efficiency,and decrease wear rate of the pulp lifter in particular at the base of the pulp lifters. The simulation results showed that if curved lifters with a radius of 0.3×mill radius are used, the amount of slurry flow back and carry over will be negligible. It is predicted that by installing the curved pulp lifters, the capacity of the mill increases by 10% and the pulp lifter service life improves by at least 20%. "SynopsisThe availability of advanced characterization techniques is integral to the development of advanced materials, not only during development phases, but in the manufactured components as well. At Necsa, two modern neutron diffractometers equipped with in-situ sample environments, as well as complementary X-ray diffraction instruments, are now available as User Facilities within the National System of Innovation in support of the South African research and industrial communities. Neutrons and X-rays, owing to their different interaction mechanisms with matter, offer complementary techniques for probing crystalline materials. Both techniques enable nondestructive investigation of phenomena such as chemical phase composition, residual stress, and texture (preferred crystallite orientation). More specifically, the superior penetration capabilities of thermal neutrons into most materials allows for the analysis of bulk or localized depth-resolved properties in a wide variety of materials and components. Materials that can be investigated include metals, alloys, composites, ceramics, and coated systems. In particular, depth-resolved analyses using neutron diffraction complements surface investigations using laboratory X-rays in many scientific and engineering topics. The diffraction techniques can add significant downstream value to the anticipated nuclear industry development activities.IntroductionMaterials characterization is central in understanding the relationship between the structure, properties, and performance in order to engineer materials that fit the performance criteria for specific applications. This is conveniently represented in the form of a tetrahedron, generally known as the material science paradigm (Figure 1).The availability of advanced characterization techniques is integral to the development of advanced metals, not only during development phases, but in the form of manufactured components. The Søderberg electrode was invented about 95 years ago by the company Elektrokjemisk, later known as ELKEM. It is still the most commonly used electrode system in submerged-arc furnaces for ferroalloys, platinum smelting, and slag cleaning operations. The size of the furnaces and electrodes has increased over the years and electrode diameters up to 2000 mm are today in use. Such large electrodes can be challenging to manage, and large electrodes are also more demanding when it comes to the electrode paste used in the electrodes. Although electrode sizes and equipment around the electrodes have changed, the main principles of the Søderberg electrode processes are the same. To assists in proper understanding of the electrode processes and to optimize electrode management, Elkem has developed several mathematical tools covering various aspect of the process. Both temperatures and thermal stresses can be calculated during dynamic conditions. The paper demonstrates, with examples, how the tools are used in both education and as practical input to improved electrode performance.

Raise-boring experiences in the gold mines of the Anglo American Corporation Group by J. W. Wilson M.Sc., M.I.M.M., F.S.A.I.M.M., M.A.I.M.E. and P. C. Graham M.Sc. (Eng.) Gold mining is being carried out at ever-increasing depths in South Africa. For reasons of safety and human comfort, it is becoming imperative for raises to be developed by means other than conventional drilling and blasting. Raise-boring is an attractive alternative method. Initial raise-boring experiences in South African gold mines showed disappointingly high costs due to the abrasivity and difficulty of drilling Witwatersrand quartzites. Consequently, a research and development project was instigated with the objective of making raise-boring an economically viable technique in hard abrasive rock. A Robbins 61R raise-borer was made available to the Research and Development team and a number of raises have been drilled. During these trials two advances in cutter design were tested. This paper presents the results obtained, including drilling costs, and provides details of the equipment used.

Dual energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) sorting is a recent development in the range of sensor-based sorting technologies available today. DE-XRT is particularly suitable for dry coarse coal beneficiation in the size range -120 mm +12 mm. In this paper, we describe the technology and show the results of a number of test runs conducted on different types of coal from the USA and South Africa. The results have shown that DE-XRT is an effective technology not only for deshaling of coal and removing pyritic sulphur but also for separating coal and torbanite. The use of dry deshaling methods will be more important as water availability becomes a greater concern. DE-XRT is one such technology which will be incorporated in future dry coal processing plants.

Thickening is an essential process in the mining industry and currently one of the most costeffective technologies for recovering water from tailings streams. Improved performance of thickeners can lead to significant energy savings, and increased recovery of water close to the mill. Its performance is directly affected by the rheological properties of slurry at the raking zone. To further understand the dynamics of slurry inside thickeners, a multiphase particle-in-cell method (MP-PIC), is used to investigate its behaviour on a sliding channel. Parameters like particle-size distribution (PSD), rheological properties, and domain discretisation were benchmarked to study its influence on highly dense flows. The slurry concentration by weight of the samples ranged between 60 to 70% of solids by mass, under which conditions it is known to behave like a non-newtonian fluid. An experimental flume, 0.2 m wide and 2 m long, was used for validation under different angles and slurry composition. Visual analysis of the slurry height and shape, as well as velocity measurements, were compared with numerical data. The preliminary results show the ability of MP-PIC method to represent different types of highly dense flows, while still being computationally affordable and practical for industrial use. Flotation reagents play a vital role in mineral flotation. In the past century, most studies focused on the modification of anion or cation collectors and the synergistic effect of mixed collectors, which have contributed to research. In this study, we reviewed brand-new reagents, metal-organic/inorganic complexes, with the functional group of metal ion, which are totally different from the traditional anion or cation collector and show absolute specificity for some minerals. For example, Pb-BHA complex collector was developed to realise the atmospheric flotation of scheelite due to the absolute specificity for calcium minerals. Calcium oleate collector was found to be the effective species in the flotation of calcium minerals, and has been employed to selectively separate fluorite from calcite. Selective adsorption of Al-Na2SiO3 polymer on calcite surfaces proved the self-assembly of H2SiO3 polymer using Al3+ had stronger selectively adsorption ability than Na2SiO3. Also that Fe3+-starch complex was a better depressant for iron minerals than caustic starch and contributed to a more efficient reverse flotation. In conclusion, metal ions are good templates for molecular assembly and can be used to control the structure of metal complexes and exhibit special properties, which provide possibilities for the design of new flotation agents. It is well known that the ability to influence project value reduces significantly as planning progresses and decisions regarding project parameters are made. However, at the prefeasibility stage in particular, where one of the main aims should be to evaluate a wide range of options in order to select the best for more detailed further study, there is often a reluctance to spend the time and money needed to do this rigorously. This paper demonstrates, by a number of case study examples, how significant increases in value may be obtained by fully evaluating the combinations of alternatives for various project design parameters, including (though not limited to) mining methods, haulage methods, mining rates, processing methods and rates, sequencing of mining, and cut-off grades, with changes and upgrades over time where applicable. The additional value unlocked is typically orders of magnitude greater than the additional cost of the more comprehensive study. The dangers of misuse of simplistic sensitivity analyses and failure to identify how strategies might change in response to changes in external factors are also illustrated, and the importance of selecting the best `grade descriptor' is discussed.

"The solid-state reduction of ilmenite concentrate with graphite was studied under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1050°C and 1350°C. The rate of reduction increased with increasing temperature and decreasing particle size, with the maximum extent of reduction found to be 80% at 1350oC with a particle size in the range of -106 +90 µm. The activation energy for the reduction reaction was calculated to be 257 kJ/mole. The trivalent iron oxide was reduced first to divalent iron oxide and then to metallic iron. An annular ring of a partially reduced oxide phase containing metallic nuclei was formed around the core of ilmenite, which grew in size as the original ilmenite core shrank with progressive reduction. The reduction of titanium dioxide also took place during this stage, which produced the Magneli oxides in the form of TinO2n-1. The metallic phase had very high Fe and low Ti contents throughout the reduction, whereas the partially reduced oxide phase adjacent to the metallic phase was high in Ti and depleted in Fe. The metallic phase globules formed during this stage were small and are considered suitable only for leaching and not for other concentration processes. The core of the particle generally retained the composition of the original ilmenite. The purpose of this work was to remove iron and increase the titanium oxide content of the ilmenite to produce a high-titanium containing charge for subsequent smelting.IntroductionThe titanium-bearing minerals ilmenite (FeTiO3) and rutile (TiO2) are the primary natural raw materials used in industry to produce titanium metal and titanium-based products. The common titanium-bearing minerals are ilmenite, rutile, anatase, brookite, leucoxene, arizonite, and perovskite. Although the formula of ilmenite is commonly expressed as FeTiO3, the mineral can accommodate Mn and Mg, which are chemically bound in the form of (Fe,Mn,Mg)TiO3. Ilmenite concentrate can also contain Fe2O3 and Al2O3 in addition to the physically separable oxides such as SiO2 and CaO. The crystal structure of ilmenite is an ordered derivative of the corundum structure with a trigonal-rhombohedral symmetry. Fe2+ and Ti4+ ions occupy the octahedral sites, leaving the tetrahedral sites unoccupied. In each FeTiO3 unit, there are three O2- ions creating three octahedral sites, two of which are occupied by Fe2+ and Ti4+ (Wilson et al., 2005)."

As part of its programme to develop methods for concentrating minerals underground, the Chamber of Mines of South Africa in conjunction with Lurgi evolved and tested a I MW centrifugal mill. The machine is capable, in the autogenous mode, of grinding more than 25 t/h of minus 75 plus 44 mm hard quartzite to a minus 3 mm product containing over 50 per cent minus 75 µm material, and as a ball mill of grinding more than 60 t/h of minus 19 mm quartzite to a minus 3 mm product containing over 35 per cent minus 75 µm material. Extrapolation of computer models of the process suggests that these limits can be comfortably exceeded. Long-term continuous testing is in hand, aimed at proving that this I m in diameter by I m long mill is in every respect the equivalent of a conventional 4 m by 6 m ball mill.

All mining and milling complexes can, within limits, operate at a variety of production rates. Factors of economic importance that are affected by production rates are costs per unit production, recovery and product grade. Once the relationship between the production rate and cost is established, dynamic programming techniques can be used to define the optimum production schedule (that is, the production schedule that maximizes the present worth of the operation) for the life of the deposit. In general, assuming that the capacity and efficiency of the physical plant remain unchanged throughout the life of the deposit, the optimum production rate is not constant for the life of the deposit, but declines gradually as the deposit is being exhausted.
