As a result of the depletion of high-grade manganese reserves, it has become necessary to consider the exploitation of low-grade manganese ores. The main problem of low-grade manganese ore is the low Mn/Fe ratio, which makes it unfit for the production of manganese ferroalloys. In this work, a selective reduction technique was used for smelting low-manganese ore in the presence of coke and fluxing material in an electric submerged arc furnace to obtain a rich manganese slag and low-manganese pig iron. The product slag was blended with medium-manganese ore and smelted in an electric submerged arc furnace, in the presence of coke and the fluxing agent, to produce silicomanganese alloy. The influence of reducing agent ratio, charge basicity, and charge Mn/Si ratio on the smelting process was investigated. The optimum conditions were found to be a coke ratio of, 1.35, Mn/Si ratio of 2.0, and charge basicity of 2.5. The silicomanganese alloy produced under these conditions satisfies the specifications for Si16Mn63 and Si17Mn65. The experimental results were applied on a pilot scale, producing a silicomanganese alloy with a chemical composition close to that of the standard specifications.

In response to the enormous amounts of coal discard generated during coal mining and preparation, the development of an efficient and sustainable strategic use of this resource is essential. Furthermore, the rising urban population over the next decades is confronted with the depletion of quality raw materials for building components. To this end, this study reports new information on the morphology, water absorption, and flexural strength properties of ceramic composites produced from three different coal discards and polysiloxane pre-ceramic polymer (PCP) resin. In addition, test results relating to the continuous operating temperature, chemical resistance, and efflorescence potential of the composites are presented. The results show that the water absorption and flexural strength of the coal composites, up to 1.94% and 36.46 MPa respectively, exceed the requirements for ceramic and clay roof tiles. The continuous operating temperature of composites is found to be more thermally stable than conventional roofing tiles (concrete and ceramic) between ambient temperature and 600°C. In addition, the excellent chemical resistance of the composites (94.43%−99.98%) compared to conventional roofing tiles (67.82%−99.97%) eliminates the need for additional external coatings. The interesting results documented so far suggest that this technique could be used to produce low-temperature application building products such as bricks, panels, roofing tiles, etc. This new recycling technique offers an excellent opportunity to eliminate enormous volumes of coal discard and to advance the circular economy in the coal industry.

Underground coal gasification (UCG) is becoming more popular as the reserves of good quality, mineable coal are starting to diminish, and yet the global energy demand from coal is still increasing. The purpose of this research project was to investigate cavity formation within a coal block due to the combustion reactions in the context of UCG. The cavity plays a pivotal role in the UCG process, as it is essentially the gasification reactor. Cavity formation in an in situ gasification process using the forward combustion linking method (FCL) had been investigated, and a laboratory model was created to simulate the process. The experiment was performed by drilling a U-shaped tunnel into a coal block, which was then combusted internally with air that was fed through an injection hole. A heating element (at approximately 500°C) was used to supply the required heat for combustion at the base of the injection well. The coal blocks were analysed using micro-focus X-ray tomography. The tomography results showed that the coal tended to crack along the bedding plane after a short duration of combustion, due to either the formation of clinker or the expansion of swelling vitrinite along the horizontal tunnel. The deposit was thicker at the base of the injection well compared to the base of the production well; this may have been caused by the turbulence of the air flow and the relatively high oxygen concentration at the base of the injection well. A comparison of the results with work by Daggupati et al. (2010) showed the same trend, despite the slightly different methodology applied.

The Upper Group 2 (UG2) chromitite reef is a shallow-dipping stratiform tabular orebody in the South African Bushveld Complex, which strikes for hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 500 m. Pillars are widely used to support the open stopes and bords. Little work has been done in the past to determine the strength of pillars on the UG2 Reef and design was done using formulae developed for other hard-rock mines. This has led to oversized pillars with consequent sterilization of ore. In this paper we describe a back-analysis of stable and failed UG2 pillars on the Bushveld platinum mines, and provides a strength formula for UG2 pillars. The formula may be used cautiously on all Bushveld platinum mines with similar geotechnical, geometrical, and geomechanical conditions to the pillars in the database.

Efficient drill-and-blast performance is pivotal to the profitability of deep-level mines, where high operating costs and declining grades demand maximum throughput. This study investigated persistent fragmentation problems at a longhole stoping operation that suffered from simultaneous oversized rock blockages in 300 mm × 300 mm grizzlies and excessive fines. Fifty-one muckpile images from five blasted stopes were analysed with Split-Desktop. Although the overall F₈₀ was 287 mm, nominally suitable for the grizzly aperture, the Rosin- Rammler uniformity index of 0.80 revealed a highly inconsistent size distribution containing both boulders and fines. Existing drill patterns were then evaluated with the Aegis underground software, which showed negligible crack overlap at the toe owing to inadequate spacing and burden. Insufficient energy overlap between blastholes, particularly at the toe, was found to contribute to the coarse fragmentation, while excessive fines were attributed to the crushing and severely fractured zones of blastholes. Optimisation simulations demonstrated that an 89 mm blasthole diameter on a 2 m × 2 m pattern would overlap, aligning with Aegis requirements of balancing powder factor, break angle, and energy distribution. Implementing this revised pattern is expected to reduce secondary breaking, prevent ore-pass blockages, lower fines, and ultimately improve overall production efficiency. The methodology illustrates how integrated image analysis and modelling software can effectively diagnose and address fragmentation issues, particularly in underground longhole mining, where challenging blasting conditions require a balance between achieving optimal fragmentation and maintaining stope stability. This approach offers a cost-effective pathway to improving comminution performance in deeplevel mines.

"The kinetics of MnO and SiO2 reduction in SiMn slags based on Assmang/Comilog ore and HCFeMn (highcarbon ferromanganese) slag were investigated between 1500 and 1650°C under a CO atmosphere. The results showed that charges containing HCFeMn slag had relatively faster reduction rates than those without. The difference in the driving force for MnO reduction was insignificant among the SiMn slags at 1500°C, which implies a low contribution of the driving force for reduction rate. The slag viscosities were also rather similar, around 1 poise at 1500°C, which could not explain the different reduction rates. Instead, the different charges containing various sulphur contents are believed to give rise to the varying reduction rates. The estimated activation energies for MnO reduction were around 500–920 kJ/mol for charges containing HCFeMn slag, and between 250–300 kJ/mol for those without. Based on the estimated kinetic parameters, the considered rate models were able to describe the reduction of MnO and SiO2 in SiMn slags between 1500 and 1650°C. Mn enhances the strength, toughness, and hardness of steel products, and both Mn and Si are used as deoxidizers to prevent the development of porous structures (International Manganese Institute, 2014; Olsen, Tangstad, and Lindstad, 2007; Subramanyam, Swansiger, and Avery, 1990; Tomota et al., 1987).The thermodynamic background of manganese ferroalloys is well established (Olsen, Tangstad and Lindstad, 2007), but kinetic information is rather scarce, especially for the SiMn process (Tranell et al., 2007; Tore-Andre Skjervheim, 1994). The development of newer and improved electrical products has led to an increase in the rate at which older products are discarded as waste. The main focus of electronic waste is the printed circuit board (PCB) because of the inherently high value of contained metals such as gold and copper. Several options for treatment of the non-metallic fraction including material recycling, where the residue may be used as inclusions in concrete or asphalt materials with minimal processing or chemical recycling, where chemicals and fuels are produced from the residue using pyrolysis exist. In this paper, the utilisation of the non-metallic leached PCB waste fraction as reductant in secondary copper smelting was investigated. Analysis of the leached residue revealed that PCB is highly amorphous and has a carbon content of 28.5%, an oxygen content of 23.1%, with the ash and volatile matter contents 40.1% and 44.8% respectively. Thermodynamic simulations of secondary smelting of copper were conducted in terms of metal recovery, and the energy required when PCB was used as a reductant. The results were also compared with that of coal and PCB-coal blends. The simulations revealed that as PCB in the blend used as reductants increases, the amount of energy required for the smelting operation decreases. Metal recovery slightly decreased as the mass percent of PCB in the blend increased due to lower carbon content present in PCB relative to coal. The results also highlighted the energy saving with PCB-coal blends which was around 160 kWh per ton of feed relative to coal. The decrease in the amount of energy required for the operation is attributed to the higher volatile content of the PCB, which is also a part of the reduction process. Wheel loaders are widely used in many sectors due to their mobility, operational flexibility, and low costs. The literature is mainly focused on improving the hydraulic, mechanical, and electronic subsystems of these machines in terms of efficiency or developing strategies for controlling these systems. In this study, the effects of the loader operator and different working conditions on the loading performance were investigated. The study was carried out at the Can Lignite Enterprise (CLI), which is a major coal producer in Turkey. In the study, which lasted approximately four months, a total of 808 measurements were performed to investigate seven different scenarios. The effect of a single parameter on loading performance was investigated in the first six scenarios. The results showed that the biggest impact on loading performance was caused by the operator's experience with 63.4%. On the other hand, the worst and most ideal working conditions determined from the first six scenarios were tested in the seventh scenario. It was tested as a script. The test results showed that the loading performance was 285.5% more effective under the most ideal operating conditions compared to the worst operating conditions. In addition, in the study, the loading performances of five loaders with four different capacities were examined in terms of energy efficiency and it was determined that the Kawasaki 115 work machine, which has a higher model and lower engine operating hours, was more advantageous. In the study, various suggestions were developed in parallel with the research results. The most prominent and easiest to implement of these suggestions is related to the selection of the loader operator.

Dolomite is an essential raw material for the refractory industry, a flux in the iron and steel industry and also for the extraction of magnesium metal. Generally, particle size reduction, screening and classification are used for the preparation of the high-grade sized material for different applications, whereas low-grade fine fractions are not utilised. These fines or low-grade overburdens are dumped at the mine site for future utilisation, which creates environmental issues along with inadequate space management. In the present investigation, a detailed study was carried out to decrease the silica content of the low-grade dolomite fines from Gomardih , India, containing 28.6% CaO and 20.1% MgO along with 8.3% silica. Different process flow sheet options were evaluated with a combination of dry classifier, wet classifier, gravity concentrators as well as flotation. Different process variables were assessed along with mineralogical characterisation to optimise the process for efficient rejection of siliceous gangue minerals. Results indicated that dolomite, calcite and quartz are the major mineral phases present in the ore along with other minor minerals. It was concluded that two-stage flotation was an effective process for the reduction of silica up to below 1% after grinding to a particle size below 212 μm. A process flow sheet with a combination of gravitation air classifier and flotation can produce a concentrate with silica content below 4.5%. The new caving megaprojects that are planned to go into production in the next decade have scheduled horizontal developments at very high rates, which are difficult to achieve. Research has been conducted that seeks to model the construction times for underground developments to determine the feasibility of achieving the planned rates. However, these previous attempts do not consider all the operational aspects that make up the mine development cycle. Here, we present a discrete event simulation (DES) model that individualizes each unit operation of the development cycle to determine the construction rates that new projects will be able to attain. The developed model was applied to the New Mine Level (NML) of the El Teniente Division (DET). The results indicate that it would be impractical to achieve the advance rates scheduled in the original plans if the unit operations of the mine continue to be executed using the status quo. The metres developed after six years in the sections analysed can be significantly improved by changing the maintenance strategy for the equipment (457 metres increase), orepass availability (194 metres increase), and the initial planning sequence (1 598 metres increase). It is recommended that the mine implements a flexible maintenance strategy, defines a strategy to ensure and increase orepass availability to contractors, and makes use of current simulation tools for a more robust development sequence planning.

South African coal discards derived from feed coal for thermoprocesses pose human health and environmental problems and incur high disposal costs. These issues need to be resolved. Coal fines and a coal fines/ K2CO3 blend were combusted at 700°C in a laboratory rotary kiln to produce ashes containing metakaolinite (Al2O3.2SiO2) and illite/muscovite/orthoclase amorphous materials. The blend ash and coal fines ash, containing 18% K2O and <1% K2O respectively, were leached with water and with 1 M and 8 M NaOH at 80°C for 4 hours using a solid to liquid ratio of 1:5. The 8 M NaOH leach yielded 17% sodalite (Na8Si6Al6O24(OH)2) formation through SiO32-, Al(OH)4-, and Na+ precipitation in the leached ashes. The 1 M NaOH leach yielded no sodalite. X-ray fluorescence analysis of the original ashes and leached ashes showed low Al and Si dissolution efficiencies due to the sodalite formation. Sequential NaOH leaching resulted in the highest potassium dissolution efficiency of 89% for the ashes of fines/K2CO3 blend and 59% for the fines. It may be possible to increase the ash-derived zeolite concentration by using even higher NaOH concentrations (12–20 M NaOH) during leaching. Sodalite derived from coal ash could possibly be utilized for water purification in industrial applications, or as molecule separators. The potassium-containing liquid could be used in fertilizer manufacture.

Excessive dust generation from unpaved mine haul roads is a problem common to most surface mining operations. While optimal road wearing course material selection parameters reduce the inherent dust generation potential, they do not totally eliminate fugitive dust. Many different classes of suppression or palliative treatments are available for mine haul roads and this paper initially ascertains basic selection guidelines, using a set of ideal dust palliative product, application and performance parameters based on mine road-user requirements. An evaluation and modelling methodology for truck generated fugitive dust emissions is developed as a basis for the comparative assessment of dust control strategies. For water-based spraying, a watering model was developed to estimate individual mine road watering frequencies for characteristic site parameter combinations during summer and winter operating conditions, for a required level of control or maximum dust defect. This forms the base-case scenario with which to compare the performance of other types of dust palliatives under the same conditions. Finally, a basic palliative economic evaluation model is introduced with the aim of identifying and costing the establishment, application and maintenance rejuvenation activities associated with the use of chemical palliatives. While palliative cost and performance is generally site specific, it is shown that under certain combinations of conditions, the use of dust palliatives has the potential to deliver cost savings when compared to water-based spraying.

This review was initially motivated by the author’s own experience in attempting to reconcile run-of mine production tons with the Coal Resource and Reserve estimation of mineable, in-situ tonnages. The primary scientific measurements and observations that are collected during exploration at the beginning of the value chain will have a profound effect on the future of the mining operation. Due diligence must be exercised during the planning of a new mine and during the life of an existing mine. The comments provided by the technical and economic assessment group of Venmyn Deloitte confirmed the need for this critical review. They found the reporting of Coal Resources in South Africa to be inconsistent. This was particularly problematic in the Waterberg Coalfield in Limpopo Province. In this coalfield there are two types of coal deposit present. The first is comprised of the thick intercalated, cyclic coal and shale/mudstone sequences of the Volksrust Formation. This overlies multiple coal seams within the Vryheid Formation, each of which is thick enough to be extracted as an individual raw coal unit. On the other hand, the interbedded coal and shale seams of the Volksrust Formation require beneficiation to separate the coal from the shale. The review examines practices and methods, investigates alternatives, provides checks and balances, and tests these against actual production reconciliations. In conclusion, the best estimates of the mineable, in-situ tonnage will be obtained from the air-dry raw material density. These estimates should be adjusted afterwards to allow for free moisture content. The adjustments are derived from reconciliation data. The greatest contributing factor to the over-estimation of Reserve tonnages is the moisture content of the raw material. This fluctuates significantly under varying conditions in situ, as well as upon exposure to the natural environment. The air-dried density of the raw material includes inherent (structurally bound) moisture within the matrix. It provides credible tonnage estimations of raw material available while also providing an indication of voids within the volume of material being assessed. The calculated solids percentage can be used to adjust the specific gravity, which is determined via the Archimedes principle. This will supply a representative estimate of the material to be mined.

Poor phase separation and fine dissemination of the desired components within congruous slag phases are key challenges limiting the recoverability of values from slags by conventional beneficiation methods. Slag microstructure conditioning is a pragmatic approach to increasing themvalue-in-use of discard slags, especially when integrated with the broader smelter infrastructure. Although not yet tested on oxide slag systems, this paper explores the potential application of magnetohydrodynamic principles to the crystallization behaviour of bulk slags. Integrating the slag microstructure conditioning infrastructure to the existing smelter infrastructure is key to unlocking the economic value of slags because it is most economic to condition the properties of molten slag directly after tapping. A new business model that integrates smelting units to transversalmeconomic activities, such as cement production and suppliers of construction aggregates, canmsignificantly increase the circularity of metallurgical slags.

The problems associated with outliers and their adverse effects on resource estimation in deep level South African gold mines are presented, and solutions suggested in available literature are reviewed. Traditional Witwatersrand type outlier capping uses the 99th percentile grade as the upper limit, a somewhat blunt approach. The occurrence of high and low grade areas in mining operations and the estimation of resources using geostatistical techniques require that the assumption of stationarity be upheld. Honouring the stationarity of data requires that mining areas be subdivided into appropriately sized and spaced domains. In order to overcome high-grade conditionally biased block estimates, the overly strong influence of extreme grades is mitigated by using naturally occurring grade sub-domains, by identifying outliers within the grade sub-domains, allocating relevant capping limits, and weighting them in a post-estimation process to. Rather than applying a capping value across a domain it applies a maximum cap based on the extreme value and its range of influence; the method also ensures that relevant capping occurs even in lower grade sub-domains. The proposed method for capping outliers recognises that metal contained in high grade chip samples should not be over-capped, and based on the grade of surrounding samples. The post-processing method of capping outliers does not interfere with the kriging equations. The method is simple, elegant, and can be easily applied. An advantage is that the output from the kriging process is not overwritten, allowing for comparison between original kriging results and post-processing results.

Recent developments in survey techniques and measuring equipment now allow for an accurate assessment of external coating condition and cathodic protection performance. These developments build on 20 years of experience of using Direct Current Voltage Gradient (DCVG) and Close Interval Potential Survey (CIPS) methods. The techniques use the latest advances in measurement systems coupled to a bespoke data processing system. The paper describes tests and trial surveys carried out on a hydrocarbon transmission pipeline in West Africa during 2005. The survey works described and conclusions drawn are from the data collected. Of particular interest are the apparent capacitance effects which are thought to occur under disbonded coating and the characteristics that these may show on the integrated CIPS and recorded DCVG profiles. This paper was originally presented at the Cefracor conference in Aix, France, in June 2006 The pipeline was originally installed on a phased basis between 1989 and 1994. The external coatings were three layer polyethylene factory coating and shrink sleeve field joint coating. An impressed current cathodic protection system was installed. The pipeline has subsequently been affected by disbondment of the coatings. It was a primary objective of the trials to attempt to identify such affected areas. In addition to a technically detailed account of the survey works undertaken and the results obtained the authors will consider the practical and commercial aspects of these surveys with input that provides a perspective from the specifier, pipeline surveyor, pipeline operations personnel and the pipeline owner. It is intended that the data presented will provide greater awareness of the benefits and limitations of the techniques used and their role for both stand-alone interpretation and the integration of the survey information with other inspection methods used for external corrosion assessment. The application of the described techniques is well developed and proven to locate and characterise through?coating defects and to provide a full audit of cathodic protection status. However, the possibility of the techniques being able to indicate disbonded coating is unproven and further tests and trials are planned which may allow a greater understanding of the electrical characteristics which are believed to be associated with disbonded coatings which may or may not be filled with an electrolyte. Further work is currently planned in West Africa, South Africa and Scotland in order to improve the understanding of this technique and to determine if the reported indications do actually represent a method of locating disbonded coatings.
