"When considered collectively, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves are arguably a key asset for any mining company. Mineral Reserves are the economically mineable portions of Mineral Resources. They therefore provide a good indication of the economic prospects in the short to medium term and associated non-financial impairments for mining companies, hence a focus on Mineral Reserves. An assessment of modifying factors for converting Mineral Resources to Mineral Reserves revealed that Mineral Reserves were most sensitive to long-term commodity prices, hence the focus on long-term commodity prices. The justification for selecting gold and platinum mines is that they collectively make a significant contribution to South Africa’s earnings from mining.The introduction of the South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code) in 2000 informed the basis for analysing long-term commodity price assumptions for major South African gold and platinum mining companies between 2000 and 2016. The analysis revealed that the least number of non-financial impairments occurred when long-term commodity prices were within ±5% of spot prices. This finding suggests that this range is the ideal range for long-term commodity price assumptions to improve confidence in Mineral Reserve declarations and minimize impairments. Introduction The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code) defines a Mineral Resource as ‘a concentration or occurrence of solid material of economic interest in or on the Earth’s crust in such form, grade or quality and quantity that there are reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction’ (SAMREC, 2016, p. 18). Mineral Resources are categorized according to increasing levels of geoscientific confidence or knowledge, from Inferred to Indicated and lastly, Measured categories. The SAMREC Code defines a Mineral Reserve as ‘the economically mineable part of a Measured and/or Indicated Mineral Resource’ (SAMREC, 2016, p. 25). In some of the other reporting codes such as the Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the JORC Code), a Mineral Reserve is synonymous with an Ore Reserve. The conversion of Mineral Resources to Mineral Reserves involves applying modifying factors, which are non-resource considerations. The modifying factors used in the Mineral Reserve estimation process include mining, metallurgical, processing, infrastructure, economic, marketing, legal, environmental, social, and governmental factors. Each of these modifying factors consists of several components which require due consideration in the estimation of Mineral Reserves. Broken Hill Mines-1968, edited by M. Radmanovich and J. T. Woodcock, published by The Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Melbourne, 613 pages. Price $A15. This volume, containing some 65 technical papers, was produced for the 1968 annual conference of the Australasian Institute held at Broken Hill to mark the 75th Anniversary of that Institute, founded at Broken Hill in 1893. That conference also coincided with the 85th Anniversary of the discovery of the Broken Hill mining field. This closely reflects the position in this country, where the Witwatersrand gold fields were discovered in 1886, and our South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will in March, 1969 be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the forerunners of our Institute. There is a comprehensive report of the geology of the Broken Hill area and the mineralogy of the ore body, and there are reports on the mining methods and the metallurgical procedures which have been developed over 85 years of operation of one of the great mining fields of the world. The value of most of the papers is enhanced by a large number of illustrations and photographs. An early section covers the academic and practical aspects of rock mechanics, prospecting, and exploration techniques are described in some detail. A third of the volume is devoted to mining, with papers on 26 aspects. The breadth of the coverage gives an indication of much specialized development, research, and consequent maturity in all departments. The detailed treatment of metallurgical aspects such as sizings of individual mineral particles throughout the milling stages and the development of an on-stream analysis system for lead will commend this volume to the specialist. The committee responsible for the production of this volume, which brings together much information previously only to be found after searching through numerous publications, are to be congratulated on a well produced comprehensive review of many aspects of the mining and metallurgical fields. In the mineral processing industry, Ni-Cu-Fe-S converter matte is leached to remove base metals from a concentrate containing platinum group metals (PGMs). We investigated the atmospheric leaching process to develop a better understanding of the leaching behaviour of the base metals (Cu, Fe, and Ni) and the PGMs, in particular Ru, Ir, and Rh with respect to key process variables, acid concentration, and Cu concentration under oxidative and non-oxidative conditions. With oxidative leaching, a higher initial acid concentration resulted in higher Cu, Ni, and Fe extractions, as well as faster leaching reaction rates. A higher initial acid concentration also resulted in faster precipitation of Cu, Ru, and Ir under oxidizing conditions. Under non-oxidative conditions, Ni and Fe extraction was much slower, and the effect of initial acid concentration on Cu precipitation was less pronounced. The initial Cu concentration had a slightly smaller effect on the leaching behaviour of Fe and Ni, as well as precipitation of Ru, Ir and Rh. Moreover, a higher initial Cu concentration suppressed both Ni and Fe leaching and had a slight inhibiting effect on the precipitation behaviour of Cu, Ru, and Ir.

The problem of a realistic investment analysis for a new mining venture that sells its products on the international metal markets IS studied against the background factors, firstly, of different inflation rates between the countries hosting the mines and those. hosting the metal markets; and, secondly, of the changing pattern of currency exchange rates between such countries. The purchasing-power parity theory is used to establish a pattern of relationship between these two factors, and to develop a more logical approach to the long-term forecasting of metal prices in the currency of the country in which the mine is situated.

A siliceous low-grade copper ore from Mpanda Mineral Field (MMF), located in south west Tanzania consisting of SiO2 (58.3%), Fe (10.4 %) and Cu (0.9 %) was initially subjected to selective dispersion-flocculation using sodium trisilicate (STS) as a dispersant and xanthan gum (XG) as a flocculant. Subsequently, the selectively flocculated fraction was floated using a collector combination of potassium ethyl and amyl xanthate (1:1) in the presence of poly-ethylene oxide (PEO) as a silica depressant, to get a copper concentrate. The mineralogical investigations confirmed that the MMF ore was mainly composed of quartz, chalcopyrite and pyrite. Adsorption studies indicated that the adsorption density of XG on MMF ore decreased with an increase in pH, while that of PEO was independent of pH. The adsorption isotherms of XG and PEO on MMF ore exhibited Langmuirian behaviour. The zeta potential studies of MMF ore indicated that the iso-electric point (IEP) was located at pH 2.6, presumably due to its high silica content. In the combined presence of XG and STS, the zeta potential of MMF ore became more negative, with an increase in the concentration of STS. However, in the presence of PEO, the zeta potential of MMF ore became less negative with an increase in the concentration of PEO beyond the IEP, without shifting the IEP. Selective dispersion-flocculation of MMF ore improved the flocculated chalcopyrite grade to 19.8 %, yielding a degree of flocculation and a maximum separation efficiency of 12.1 % and 85.7 % respectively, after three desliming stages in the presence of 30 ppm of STS and 30 ppm of XG. A copper concentrate of 29 % grade and 90 % recovery containing silica of 0.9 % grade and 1.7 % recovery was achieved by flotation of the selectively flocculated component, using PEO as a depressant for quartz. Reduced downtime and maximized availability of mining machines are the key factors in optimizing production rates. As technology moves industry towards an age of ?intelligent machines? it sets the foundation for change in mining equipment design, functionality, and maintenance. Recent mining machine designs are integrating more and more electronic components into the core functionality of individual piece of equipment due to regulatory and legislative requirements, such as TIER rating, as well as from a safety aspect such as personal detection systems. This paper describes the use of existing on-board electronic equipment to increase machine availability through automated maintenance planning and diagnostic fault-finding capability. The automated maintenance planning takes place on the machine itself in order to be independent of the mine?s infrastructure, while the diagnostic capabilities allow for reduced downtime. The paper also presents a concept to transfer operational data to surface to be able to optimize planning of maintenance and to reduce downtime. Case studies are presented where such systems have been commissioned and are currently in operation, the possibilities of this technology application for the future are examined.

Human factors in stope productivity -a field experiment by K. F. MAUER, M.A. (Visitor), and A. C. LAWRENCE, B.Econ., D.Com. (Member) An experiment in which three human variables were manipulated in eight stopes was conducted in a gold mine over a period of roughly six months. The three variables, which each had two levels, concerned the degree of movement from gangs, the quality of the Bantu production supervisors, and the extent to which gangs were composed of a single ethnic group (Malawians). Time was included as a variable with three levels in the analysis of the findings. On the average, stable gangs produced 12 per cent more than gangs with a high percentage of transfers, gangs with better production supervisors were more successful by nearly 9 per cent than those with poorer production supervisors, and homogeneous gangs were more productive than heterogeneous ones by as much as 15 per cent. In addition, it was found that a number of the variables exercised a joint influence on stope productivity and that the effects of the variables were accentuated by the len gth of time they had been in operation. A two-dimensional finite difference model has been developed to describe the reduction of kilogram quantities of dehydrated phosphogypsum. The model’s scope has been limited to focus on the heat transfer and reactions that occur within a mass of material contained in a vessel inside a furnace rather than also including the effects of heat transfer to the vessel. Changes in the heat transfer properties (k, ρ, and Cp) are incorporated as the composition of the mass changes as the chemical reactions progress. The model is validated against experimental data, with samples heated to 1000°C at 3°C min−1 while purging with nitrogen gas. A sensitivity analysis of model predictions to the pre-exponential factor of the reaction rate constant of the main chemical reaction and the thermal conductivity of the powder bed indicated that, at the envisaged process conditions, the behaviour of the system depends much more on the rate of heat transfer than on the rate of the chemical reaction. The model demonstrated a significant increase in accuracy when the thermal conductivity was modelled to increase linearly with temperature compared to assuming a constant value.

The semi-autogenous grinding mill is the bottleneck whenever treating hard and finely fragmented ore at Benguet Corporation's Kaline Concentrator. Low milling rates result from very high and fluctuating mill power draw. Attempts to use a mill horsepower control loop to regulate feed rate were unsuccessful because of operational upsets caused by fluctuations in feed rate on downstream operations. The objective of the computer control was to maximize tonnage throughput by stabilizing the power draw at a high but safe level without upsetting subsequent operations. The semi-autogenous mill is operated in closed circuit with a stationary screen. Instrumentation consists of a feed weightometer, a power transmitter to measure mill load, a headwater flowmeter and an ultrasonic level sensor to measure the mill discharge sump level. A 64 k-byte FOX-3 Foxboro computer processes field data from various sensors and manipulates the input control variables. These variables are the fresh feed rate and the headwater flowrate. Feed rate is controlled through a supervisor-type computer program aimed at maximizing and stabilizing power draw. The control scheme was according to how the operators responded during an operator-directed automatic control mode. Mill dilution is similarly controlled. Results achieved reflect a 3% increase in tonnage milled because of the reduction in control variability that ensued.

A comparison between hydraulic and pneumatic rockdrills by D. CLEMENT The regulation of compressed-air reticulation systems is very poor compared with that of electrical systems; this means that electrohydraulic rockdrill systems offer greater flexibility, additional power being readily available at the working face. "The aim of this paper is to enhance the understanding of the nature of mining input technologies in the South African mining industry. In the context of this research, mining inputs refer to input technology into the activities in mining engineering fields, which include mining-related production activities, rock engineering, mine ventilation, and mine transportation (handling of personnel, material, broken rock, and pumping). Input technologies in supporting fields such as geology, other engineering disciplines, human resource, procurement, finance, as well as downstream fields that include metallurgy, and marketing of minerals, were disregarded.The mining input technologies were divided into 12 nodes, and data from a sample of 150 first-tier mining suppliers was analysed. It was found that, in general, there is a high local content in mining input technologies, particularly as regards technical support services, artefacts, and machine technologies. This points to the presence of mining-induced backward linkages in the South African mining industry. The majority (83%) of companies that provide input technologies into mining are located in Gauteng Province, and relatively few are found in provinces where mining is concentrated such as North-West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Free State. IntroductionSouth Africa is well endowed with minerals, with more than fifty different minerals being mined throughout the country. For this and other reasons, mining is one of the crucial pillars in the South African economy and its importance is well documented (Robinson and von Below, 1990; Creamer, 2010; Department of Mineral Resources, 2015). In 2013, South Africa was the largest global producer of chromium, ferrochrome, platinum group metals (PGMs), and vermiculite and the second largest global producer of antimony, manganese, titanium, and vanadium (Chamber of Mines of South Africa, 2014). In 2013, the mining industry contributed 6.7% to South Africa’s GDP and was the fifth largest sector in the economy, as shown in Figure 1."

The Prieska deposit, mined between 1971 and 1991, is one of the world’s top thirty volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) base metal deposits. The Prieska Copper Mine in the Northern Cape Province was closed by Anglovaal when underground mining had extended to depths which did not allow for safe and economic extraction of the deposit at the time. The mine has a recorded historical production of over 1 Mt of zinc and 430 k tonnes of copper from 46.8 Mt of milled sulphide ore, achieving life-ofmine metal recoveries of 85% for copper and 84% for zinc into high quality concentrates (refer ORN ASX release 15 Nov 2019). Orion Minerals Ltd is currently investigating the feasibility of developing a new mine in the footprint of the historical Prieska Copper Mine, using the extensive remaining infrastructure, with the intent of extracting the unmined zinc-copper mineralisation from the Prieska deposit. This paper reports results on the flowsheet development philosophy on the hypogene ore, and challenges encountered in the process. This study initially failed to replicate historic copper and zinc recoveries employing the historic production flowsheet and reagent conditions unmodified on bench scale, as the copper and zinc were co-floating. Flowsheet modifications were therefore made to improve differential flotation and recovery, resulting in achieving comparable saleable products and recoveries from processing the hypogene ore on bench scale. Flotation variability test work on the hypogene ore focused on the use of the original flotation procedure and reagent suite using a sodium cyanide-zinc sulphate depressant system on the copper circuit, and it generated a saleable copper product of 20-26% Cu grade at 80-86% recovery. The zinc circuit generated a saleable zinc product grading at 48-55% Zn at 80-94% recoveries. Some zinc losses were due to the deportment of some zinc in sauconite. "The hydrofluoric acid (HF) industry in South Africa uses normalized mild steel (SA 516 Gr 70) for the storage and distribution of its technical-grade product (70% HF). The technical-grade acid is split from the anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (AHF) product during distillation just after HF is produced, in a stainless-steel-lined kiln, from the reaction of calcium fluoride (CaF2) with sulphuric acid (H2SO4). Uniform corrosion of the storage tanks is mitigated during commissioning by contacting the steel with 70% HF. A corrosive reaction takes place (2H+ + 2F- + Fe - H2 + FeF2) to form scale inside the tank which diminishes the attack of the steel by fresh HF, thus prolonging the service life expectancy of the vessels. This iron fluoride scale in the vessel grows continually, resulting in corrosion of the vessels continuing at a predictable rate (approx.0.5 mm/a) since the first commissioning of the tanks at Necsa in 1993. In early 2012, an increase in the average corrosion rate of the tanks to 3 mm/a measured at and below the liquid band in the storage vessels was noted. Three months later the corrosion rate had increased to 30 mm/a, just before the first leak from the tank was detected. The tanks were decommissioned shortly afterwards and an investigation revealed that the rapid corrosion was due to the presence of increased levels (>50 ppm) of nitric acid (HNO3) in the tanks, which attacked the fluoride layer protecting the steel.The oxidation characteristics of high concentrations of HNO3 with low concentrations of HF on stainless steel surface treatment are well documented. The effects of low levels of nitric acid on the corrosion of steels in sulphuric acid are also known, but no suitable published data currently exists on corrosion by high HF concentrations with low HNO3 concentrations. Establishing the rate and mechanism of corrosion by HNO3 (0.1 to 1%) in 70% HF is currently a high priority for the HF industry in South Africa and will become increasingly important in the near future due to depleting fluorite reserves and cheaper, but less efficient, processes producing H2SO4 with higher impurity levels, which were not anticipated in the original plant design. The aim of this study is to simulate the corrosion conditions in the plant on a laboratory scale in order to establish the corrosion characteristics of the steels used in the HF plant, which are increasingly exposed to the HNO3 impurities that tend to concentrate in the final technical-grade HF acid product."

The 10.5–12.5% chromium, titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel (FSS) plates used to fabricate coal line jumbo wagons is susceptible to undesirable chromium depletion during welding with 309L electrodes. In this work, non-stabilized FSS plates were welded using 308L welding electrodes. The objective was to weld non-stabilized FSSs using gas-shielded metal arc welding without causing sensitization. The welding process was optimized by lowering the heat input. Sensitization was assessed by rigorous etching techniques and anodic polarization scans. In addition, the welds were subjected to tensile testing, and their fracture surfaces were examined for intergranular cracking. Non-stabilized FSS plates were successfully welded using gas metal arc welding.

"The management of outlier grades in positively skewed gold distributions is a contentious issue. Incorporating outliers in standard ordinary kriging (OK) estimation procedures in a way that honours the data without smearing extreme grades into surrounding areas has been problematic. Cutting or capping of outliers to mitigate their influence in estimation techniques is common practice, while methods that manipulate the OK system of equations fail to honour the data. We propose a method of post-processing of kriging weights that provides realistic OK estimates and mitigates smearing without manipulating kriging equations or changing the original grades. The method requires that the data is not clustered, is approximately equally spaced, and is of the same support. Positively skewed data is ordered on attribute grade and nonlinearly transformed to a Gaussian histogram of categorical bins whose frequency is based on their likelihood of occurrence and location in the sample distributions. Factors that restrict kriging weights are calculated by dividing the percentage frequency of data in each bin by the percentage frequency of data in the bin with the highest frequency. Restriction factors applied to the kriging weights in the OK estimation restrict the range of influence in proportion to their probability of occurrence in the distribution. Smear reduction post-processing is easy to implement and addresses issues arising from negative kriging weights while considering the spatial location of samples, the sample grades, and their probability of occurrence. The method mitigates both smoothing and conditional bias.IntroductionOutliers are sample observations that deviate considerably from the standard or expected (Hawkins, 1980). These deviations can be high or low in grade depending on the distribution. The presence of outliers in a mine sampling campaign could provoke mixed reactions. Mining engineers might view high-grade outliers as a promise of achieving higher grades, while the geostatisticians view outliers as affecting the accuracy and precision of the overall estimate, among other issues. Having identified outliers, the geostatistician must decide how to account for their presence and treat them so that true underlying estimates are not distorted. Advanced knowledge of the deposit allows the geostatistician to identify and treat outliers acceptably, especially where samples are limited in number and the true grade distribution is uncertain. If ignored, or treated incorrectly, outliers are likely to lead to smearing of extreme grades into the surrounding estimates, thereby steering regions towards potential under- or over-estimation."

J. van Rensburg. Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of eighteen. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R2,124, compared with an excess of income over expenditure of R4,218 last year. There are a number of reasons for this substantial change. There was a loss on realization of investments compared with a substantial surplus in recent years. The publication of the Journal once again resulted in a large loss in spite of a generous subvention of R2,000 from the Department of Cultural Affairs and other assistance amounting to R750. The revenue from sales of publications was down considerably. This is a figure which fluctuates considerably from year to year. The secretarial fee was considerably higher than previously. Due to pressure of work it was necessary for the Secretary to relinquish his duties with the Institute of Land Surveyors and, therefore, for this Institute to assume the additional staff costs involved. Finally there was unusual expenditure on the 75th Anniversary celebrations. There was a pleasing increase in revenue from subscriptions, due to the steadily increasing membership, but this was quite inadequate to cover the substantial increases in expenditure and losses in revenue mentioned above. The changes that have been effected in the arrangements for the publication of the Journal have been mentioned elsewhere in this report. It is expected that these will bring about substantial financial benefits in the long term. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of Rl00 and the total fund was therefore increased by this amount to R4,206. The balance sheet indicates that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year from R8,755 to R13,059, while the Accumulated Funds now amount to R22,567 as against R24,691 last year. MEMBERSHIP Fifty-six Members, fifty-five Associate Members, thirteen Graduates, twenty-two Affiliates and twenty- nine Students were elected during the year. Twelve Members were admitted to Life Membership; seven Associate Members were transferred to the grade of Member; four Graduates and two Students were transferred to the grade of Associate Member; five Students were transferred to the grade of Graduate; three Affiliates were transferred to the grade of Member; five Affiliates were transferred to the grade of Associate Member. Three Members, seven Associate Members, two Graduates, two Affiliates and six Students were removed from the Membership Roll in terms of By-Law 7.7.1. Ltd. who are already doing this work satisfactorily for the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Institutes.
