Graphite blocks are currently used in the concentrate - slag zone in primary PGM smelters, and can possibly be extended to the matte zone. This project evaluates the interaction between synthetic matte and graphite blocks on a laboratory scale. Static crucible tests were performed where graphite crucibles (prepared from standard and high-grade graphite) were filled with synthetic matte (27.7 per cent S ? 46.1 per cent Fe ? 17.0 per cent Ni ? 9.2 per cent Cu) and heated to 1550°C for different time periods (1?5 days). Matte penetration was evaluated using a SEM, while graphite dissolution was evaluated by measuring the carbon content of the matte with a LECO carbon analyser. Matte penetrated into standard grade graphite up to approximately 2 mm, while matte infiltration into the high grade graphite was limited to the immediate hot face. The saturation solubility of graphite in the synthetic matte at 1550°C was 0.43 per cent. Copper, iron, nickel, and sulphur were detected in an accretion that formed in the water-cooled part of the furnace. This accretion consists of mainly Cu-S and Cu-Fe-S based phases.

The need to move towards faster and safer mine development is a key priority in mining houses globally. In addition to this, South Africa faces an array of challenges introduced by labour-intensive operations; hence a study was conducted to look into improving development rates and labour productivity, specifically in the areas where trackbound flat-end development is required. The aim of the study was to propose a method to deliver fit-for-purpose tracked tunnels that advanced at a rate of one blast per end every single working day. A major part of the study was to optimize the selection of an appropriate trackless fleet and mitigate any constraints introduced with the mechanization. This was done by creating scenarios, based on a typical case study, looking into the aspects around safety, mine design, mine activity cycling, men and machine requirements, service installations, and trackless-trackbound interfaces. The case study was based on a deep-level gold mine developing twin headings with connectings; however, with the move to extend and deepen platinum operations it is foreseen that twin end development will become more prevalent due to ventilation, logistical, and other requirements. With the introduction of the trackless mechanized system suggested, development rates of 56 m of system advance are expected (189 m total development), with on an average of three headings and fixed blast times. Scenarios run with multi-blast conditions yield expectations of 75 m/month advance of the system, significantly higher than the conventional performance seen today.

Background- History The most significant change in mining since the late 1970?s has been the emergence of very large scale mining operations , which have been developed to ensure profitability with relatively low grade ores. These large tonnage operations have resulted in the development of larger unit sized machines in all operations of beneficiation, solid-liquid separation and dewatering. Often only a few flotation lines are installed and tonnages up to 25 ktpd and beyond are not uncommon. The increased throughputs have led to the development of circular, reactor type tank designs. The reactor cell system is the most up to date flotation cell design to utilise the principles of circular cell design. The Svedala DV mechanism was specially developed to suit the RCS machine giving good solids handling characteristics and excellent metallurgical performance. Development of UG2 ore type flotation equipment The equipment was developed and optimised by Svedala process from 1995. A higher energy specification was requested by industry. This amounted to 3kW/m3 for installed volume. Existing designs were at 1.5kW/m3. Hence various modifications were required to achieve the required power input. The first 50m3 machines were installed and developed at Impala Platinum?s UG2 circuit over a one year period. Once reliability and performance was achieved, over 300 large volume flotation cells were installed at Anglo Platinum and Lonmin operations as well. Pilot Plant Development The Impala Platinum High Energy pilot plant was commissioned in 2002 and had an installed power exceeding 5kW/m3. It was operated for over a year at the tailings dam booster station and was fundamental to the large scale scavenging plant design. All experience in overcoming mechanical and operational problems was applied in scale up design principles. A very robust mechanism was designed to accommodate the additional power input from installed motors, as well as the high SG (>1.5) of the feed source. The pilot plant flowsheet is shown in the figure below.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) operations continue to grow across sub-Saharan Africa and serve as a source of livelihood to many rural communities. Owing to safety, health, environmental, and social concerns, the occupation has been regarded as a menace in several sub-Sahara African countries. Recent studies in the field of ASM prescribe formalization as a way to tame its excesses while enhancing its potential. This paper explores the concept of formalization as it relates to ASM and how it is being affected by the funding situation. The paper seeks to address the question as to whether formalization of artisanal mining operations can achieve the desired results in view of the lingering credit constraints in this mining subsector. It is recommended that, as a way of extending the scope of formalization, focus should be placed not only on access to credit in ASM but also towards optimizing the creditworthiness of ASM firms, with the goal of improving the viability of the operations.

The ?AMIRA Metal Accounting Project? had its origin in a workshop held in Cape Town on 1 August 2001, with the title ?Challenges in Metal Accounting and Information Management?, which was organised by the Western Cape Branch of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. This workshop identified the lack of an accepted set of standard procedures for metallurgical accounting as an industry-wide problem. Discussions which followed this workshop led to the initiation of the AMIRA Project P754, ?Improving Metal Accounting?, in 2003. The primary objective of the project was to provide tools for improving the auditability and transparency of metal accounting from mine to product and to facilitate good corporate governance. The planned deliverables of the project were a series of research projects into aspects of metal balancing in different types of metallurgical operations, a Code of Practice on Metal Accounting, and a textbook on the subject which could serve as a guide for metal accounting practitioners and students studying the topic. An additional planned deliverable was the provision of a new variety of professional experts in metal accounting, through successful completion of the research projects. Researchers were engaged at the Universities of Cape Town, Queensland and Stellenbosch and the project was sponsored by five mining companies, including three of the largest global mining groups. Research Program Eight research projects were undertaken as part of the P754 project and these are described briefly here to indicate the scope of the project. University of Cape Town ?Development of a methodology for measurement network design for metallurgical accounting at Namakwa Sands?. This project was based on the Namakwa Sands Separation Plant, with a data rich environment, and involved the investigation of measurement network design through the use of heuristics and the analysis of complex processing circuits. An industry-wide survey of current practice to facilitate the development of an expert system for plant accounting measurements was carried out. ?Metallurgical accounting design at the Waterval UG-2 Concentrator?. The objective of this project is to develop a model for predicting metal recoveries from the different components of a blended ore feed to a plant. ?Optimal measurement network design for metallurgical accounting at Zincor?. This project provided a hydrometallurgical test case for the design and evaluation of a semi-automated optimal measurement network. Metallurgical simulation and evaluation of the resource efficiency of whole production processes are of key importance for impact assessment, in terms of environment and resources. Exergy is a measure of resource consumption, taking into account energy, raw materials, water, and chemicals; which allows for the evaluation of different technologies to find the most resource efficient and environmentally friendly process. This paper compares the sustainability for production of rare earth magnets from primary and secondary resources through an exergetic evaluation of the production process, in addition to traditional life cycle assessment (LCA). The methodology makes use of simulation tools for tracking material flow and resources used, based on thermodynamic laws, from ore exploitation to magnet production and recycling. It highlights areas with the greatest potential for improvements in terms of resource consumption and environmental impact generation, having a thermodynamic-validated flowsheet for primary and secondary production of NdFeB magnets, present in several low-carbon technologies, such as wind turbines, electric vehicles, and cooling systems. It demonstrates the minimum exergy destruction for magnet production, through an irreversibility breakdown chart, showing where irreversible material and energy losses occur. Results show that CO2-equivalent emissions for producing NdFeB permanent magnets from primary resources could be twice as high when compared to magnets produced from recycling technologies. The theoretical maximum exergetic efficiency for primary production is 57.61%, whereas for permanent magnets produced from secondary resources, the exergetic efficiency reaches up to 82.89%. Two magnet recycling technologies were evaluated, i.e. in acidic medium and via hydrogen decrepitation, and it was observed that their exergetic efficiency and environmental impact performed better than production from primary resources. A mineralogical study was conducted on the feed (3.51 g/t Au and ~90 g/t Ag) and four leach residue samples (assaying 0.09 to 0.19 g/t Au and 30.0 to 61.5 g/t Ag) from the Pinos Altos silver-gold deposit in Mexico to determine the cause for gold and silver losses. A comprehensive mineralogical and analytical approach including fire assay, gravity pre-concentration, ore microscopy, mineral liberation analyser (MLA) and electron microprobe was used for the current study. Results showed that gold and silver lost in the leach residues occurred mainly as inclusions in quartz and silicates (accounting for over 80% for Au and 92% for Ag of the head assays, respectively), with a minor amount in iron oxide and other minerals. The amount of liberated gold and silver is negligible. Results also showed that gold and silver particles in leach residues are mainly ranged from 1 µm to 5 µm in size, which implies that ultrafine grinding is required to improve the recoveries of these two metals. Flotation reagent research focuses not only on improving flotation grade and recovery, but also on producing reagents robust enough to cope with changes. A group of recently developed co-collectors, activators, depressants and frothers are described together with a summary of results measured on base metal sulphide ores.

"The Mine, Health and Safety Act No. 29 of 1996, as amended, embodies worker self-regulation to advance health and safety in the workplace. An important provision for this is the Right to Refuse Dangerous Work (RRDW). This paper explores worker perspectives about the implementation of RRDW on South African mines against a backdrop of revised guidance in the sector: ‘Guideline for a Mandatory Code of Practice on the Right to Refuse Dangerous Work And Leave Dangerous Working Places’, gazetted in February 2016 by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR). A mixed methods study conducted at mines (n = 14) included a survey of workers (n = 293), focus groups (n = 6) and in-depth interviews (n = 16). Workers reported a high level of awareness, a positive attitude, and experience of the formal RRDW. However constraints to the formal RRDW meant that informal worker resistance to dangerous work was commonplace. Evidence of informal non-confrontational consultation, cooperation, and collaboration in the event of a dangerous workplace also emerged between workers, and supervisors. The research underscores the importance of the RRDW and worker health and safety representatives to mine health and safety. The revised guidance addresses RRDW implementation gaps, but of concern is the potential partiality towards management interests. IntroductionEnsuring that mineworkers act on their duties and responsibilities for health and safety remains a concern across the globe. Article 13 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention Safety and Health in Mines (176 of 1995) entrenched the Right to Refuse Dangerous Work (RRDW) as an important mechanism through which workers act in the best interests of their own occupational health and safety (OHS) and is considered a cornerstone of worker self-regulation (ILO, 1995). Countries ratifying Convention 176 are under obligation to make this right available to workers through OHS legislation that frames the circumstances, procedure, and protection of workers from discrimination in the event of a formal work refusal. The Convention has been ratified by 31 countries, with South Africa becoming a signatory in June 2000 (ILO, 2000). Worldwide studies show that workers use this right with caution (Hilgert, 2013) and cases associated with work refusal are rarely presented in court (Gunningham, 2007; Cooper, 2013). Rather, in cases of formal notification of a work refusal, issues arising out of this are addressed either in the immediate workplace or through the site OHS system and/or at industrial tribunals or similar mechanisms (Harcourt and Harcourt, 2000)."

The socio economic risks of mining in South Africa have been emerging for some time now, and have been brought into sharp relief by recent events in the platinum sector. The slow pace of social upliftment in the country has lead to widespread social unrest with consequent calls for different forms of resource nationalism. Fundamentally, the key stakeholders are not fully aligned, and are not engaging productively. This poses significant above-the-ground risk to mining companies. Measuring social impact, deploying inclusive solutions and engaging effectively with stakeholders are three ways in which mining companies can mitigate this risk.

As a Demand Side Management (DSM) Project, money was granted for the procurement and installation of a 3-Chamber Pipe Feeder System (3-CPFS) at AngloGold Ashanti?s Moab Khotsong Mine in the Vaal River Area, Orkney. The first submission was done to ESKOM in December 2002 and the contract was signed in September 2006 at a cost of R 57-million with an envisaged reduction in power of 7 Megawatt per month based on a 90% utilization factor. The project was finally commissioned in December 2008. The technology is not new, but the intent of the paper is to share with others the experience gained by using the technology in a deep-level mine in order to reduce overall power consumption.

"Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, its reputation for reliability in supplying platinum to global markets is under threat. This is due to the 49% decrease in output per worker (1999–2014), while the domestic costs have risen by more than 10% annually for the past 5 years. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% (2012–2016) has resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. The Chamber of Mines (now the Minerals Councilof South Africa) has suggested that solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures are required. This research aims to provide operational excellence through the application of event chain project management (ECPM) to improve productivity and reduce operational costs. A case study was used to carry out research in platinum mines, with data collected using a motion-time study to measure the current efficiency of operations in each mining stope through actual activity durations. The results indicate that through the application of the event chain project management methodology, risks affecting the mining stope schedule can be managed, the efficiency of operations was improved by reducing the time spent on each activity, productivity was increased by shortening the project duration, and operational costs were reduced in the process. IntroductionSouth Africa’s total mining industry production was 4.9% lower in 2016 than in 2015; it decreased by 1.9% year-on-year in December 2016, with the main contributor to this negative trend being the platinum group metals (PGMs) with a drop of 15.1% and contributing -3.8% percentage points (Statistics South Africa, 2016). Although South Africa possesses more than 80% of the world’s platinum reserves, the 8% drop in production output since 2008 has put the platinum mining industry under the threat of being seen as an unreliable supplier to global markets. This decline in production is caused by the 49% decrease in output per worker between 1999 and 2014. In addition, the continued decline in the commodity price by 38.3% from 2012 to 2016 and an increase in operational costs during the same period resulted in a significant portion of the sector producing at a loss in 2015. A turnaround strategy is required to overcome these challenges. The Chamber of Mines has suggested, among others, the need for solutions to improve productivity and reduce cost pressures. The implementation of these solutions will ensure that the PGM industry thrives and reaches its potential of growing production to more than 322 t by 2020 (Baxter, 2016)."

This work evaluates the deformation behaviour, at warm working temperatures, of green particle-reinforced aluminium composites produced by powder blending in a high-energy ball mill. The work focuses on metal matrix composites (MMCs) based on the 2124-Al alloy, reinforced with 10 or 15 vol.% SiC and metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) based on the 2124-Al alloy, reinforced with 5 or 10 vol.% Al2O3. Three batches for each powder were blended and powder properties such as particle size distribution (PSD) and shape were consistent after blending. It was observed that a more uniform distribution of the reinforcement phase in the aluminium alloy matrix was achieved in 2124-Al/Al2O3 than in 2124- Al/SiC composites. The powders (unreinforced 2124-Al and blended) were initially over-aged at 350°C for 2 hours to reverse any natural ageing that may have occurred prior to use. The over-ageing was incorporated to improve compressibility of the powders with the aim of achieving green compacts with higher integrity. Uniaxial compression tests performed at ambient temperature on a Gleeble® 3500 thermomechanical simulator were unsuccessful as the green compacts fragmented. Engineering stress-strain curves showed that green compacts of unreinforced 2124-Al, 10%SiC MMC and 5%Al2O3 MMNC deformed in a similar manner at ambient temperature and had the same compressive fracture stress of approximately 170 MPa. When the deformation temperature was increased from ambient to warm working temperatures (170–280°C) it was observed that electrical resistance heating (the heating mode of the Gleeble®) of unreinforced Al alloy, MMC and MMNC green compacts did not occur. This was attributed to the high electrical conductivity of aluminium, which resulted in poor heat generation due to the low electrical resistance in the samples. It was presumed that the small sample size (d=8 mm, h=12 mm) also caused rapid heat loss. After further experimentation, the green compacts were heated successfully by insulating the samples to retain heat. It was found that at 280°C, increasing the soaking time from 6 to 20 minutes decreased flow stress and improved plastic flow in the 2124-Al/10%SiC green compact.

After the presentation of the paper (published in the March Journal) the Vice-President said: "This paper is a very important addition to the considerable volume of work applications on this subject of pneumoconiosis. The disease, in all its various forms, has received attention from many, many great men, both in the medical world, and engineers. The fact that there is this big volume of publications of literature on it still doesn't mean that we can get anywhere beyond the old, simple injunction, that the prevention of pneumoconiosis does not depend on compensation, levies or anything else. It simply depends on allaying dust as quickly as possible. "This paper, however, is another scientific landmark and I think, in a cold and dispassionate way, it sets out some important points in this whole subject of the relationship of the levy - the money of compensation to the dust which causes it. "I have, personally, very little to criticise in this paper but when I listened to Dr du Toit's final conclusions, I wondered whether the words, 'Within the data available', aren't the key to this whole situation. I agree that he has demonstrated a workable relationship between the current industries for levy and dustiness, but among the factors which he lists as being important, I know that there is one which is missing. This is extremely difficult to evaluate. It's a factor which has destroyed, on so many occasions, the work which has been done by so many genuine, intent, honest people working in this field, and this is this unknown factor, this hidden factor of political opportunism, which has so often played a very important part in pneumoconiosis compensation. "How many of us have seen the grubby, grasping fingers of power-mad demagogues, and I can name them for you - but I won't - and also the blatant vote-catching of certain politicians interfering in this field. How, at the end of all that, the poor scientist, the poor dedicated man in the Mines' Department, who has to write the law of compensation, can operate, I do not know. "From this picture the ordinary layman recoils in horror. Among the casualties in this particular war, which has been fought over so many years, I am perfectly certain, are some of the criteria of certification, especially in '56/,57, when that extraordinary condition, known as 'pulmonary disability' was introduced. It is my great pleasure on behalf of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and The Geological Society of South Africa to welcome you to the 15th CMMI Congress and to Southern Africa. It is a great honour to be hosting this event and we have been looking forward to it for a long time. I am sure the technical discussions and visits will be of great value, and I am confident you will return with pleasant memories of places and people in South Africa and neighbouring countries. The theme of this Congress, Resources and Technology', is appropriate for discussions on the ways and means of going forward in the minerals industry to create the employment and wealth so sorely needed in this region. The technical programme will give mineral industry professionals from different parts of the world the opportunity to share experience and expertise for the purpose of making operations more productive, safer and environmentally acceptable to the world at large. Delegates will be exposed to current technical developments by means of 133 papers prepared for the congress: 30 on geological subjects, 45 on mining, 29 on extractive metallurgy, and 29 in the field of metals technology.

The Conference Minerals & Materials '96 was held in Somerset West, South Africa, from 31st July to 2nd August, 1996. It was organized by the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town, the Cape Technikon, and the Western Cape Branch of The South African institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). The three-day Conference was attended by 180 delegates, representing countries such as Australia, South Africa, United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Poland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The programme and associated exhibition were well organized, and each of the delegates received two volumes of proceedings containing the 77 papers presented at the Conference.

Dr C. M. van Staden (Fellow): Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much for this opportunity to contribute to the paper by Dr Stander, and Messrs Henzen and Funke. First of all, my congratulations to Dr Stander on being re-elected President of the International Association of Water Pollution Research. We in South Africa are proud that this honour was again bestowed on our leading scientist in the field of water research. Furthermore, my congratulations to the authors of this paper. The growth of the pollution problem caused by acidic water discharged from abandoned collieries, is known to most of us. However, I am not aware of any case where an abandoned gold mine is directly discharging polluted underground water. I think it is also a debatable point as to what the quality of underground water being discharged from abandoned gold mines would be in the long run. Any reduction works on a gold mine which practises only fairly good housekeeping, should not cause any water pollution by cyanide. First of all, any cyanide solution before gold precipitation would be too valuable to lose. Secondly, the precipitated solution, which contains the cyanide, is used to pump slime to slimes dams. Any cyanide pollution that may occur at the slimes dam, must come from the top and, fortunately, the days when pen stock water was discharged directly from the top of dams into public streams, have gone. Run-off and seepage is usually acidic, thus decomposing the cyanide. The code of practice by the Chamber of Mines is quite clear on the point as to how the tops of dams should be secured, to prevent any process water or storm-water polluting public streams. The general standards are given on page three of the paper. To my knowledge, under certain circumstances a degree of relaxation can be given regarding the faecal coli count; namely a permissible count of 1 000 per 100 ml. I feel very strongly that research aimed at inhibiting the activity of acid-producing bacteria should be encouraged. Success in this field would be of great benefit to the mining industry. I am very thankful that the authors have mentioned vegetation of dumps as a method to combat water pollution, with the full awareness that the key objective in vegetating dumps is to prevent air pollution. A problem that I have not heard mentioned before and on which I would appreciate the views of the authors, is the pollution that may be caused by power-stations discharging

The real cost of any mining incident has, empirically, proven to be estimation-driven, rather than factdriven. One of the main reasons for this lies with the complexity of the cost composition of any given mining incident. Incident costs comprise both direct and indirect cost factors, and in many cases the costs associated with these factors are incurred during different time periods following the incident. In this paper we aim to identify the various cost factors arising from mining incidents, provide a thorough understanding of all the potential cost factors identified, and draw general conclusions on the knowledge obtained. Furthermore, recommendations are made on how mining companies could use the results, in order to assist them in calculating the costs of mining incidents. The paper also provides suggestions for further research, with the emphasis on the most significant immeasurable cost factors, namely the costs of implementing job accommodations following an incident, the harm to company reputation, and the decreased productivity due to low worker morale/psychological factors following an incident. If mining companies are aware of and understand which factors could contribute to the cost of any given incident, future planning and incident cost estimations could be easier. It should, however, be noted that although this study provides a comprehensive list of cost factors (and detailed explanations), other unknown cost factors relating to mine incidents could prevail in extreme cases.

The President: We are very fortunate tonight to have with us Professor Franz Pawlek, Head of the Institute of Extractive Metallurgy for Non-Ferrous Metals of the Technical University, Berlin. In him we have a representative from one of the few mining and metallurgical universities in Western Germany, since I understand there are only three such universities, Berlin, Aachen and Kassel. The latter is represented by Mr Schmelling who has accompanied Professor Pawlek here tonight. The famous Freiberg University is on the other side of the Iron Curtain, and so is Breslau. Professor Pawlek was born in Vienna many, many years ago, and he obtained his diploma and then later his Doctor's Degree in metallurgy, in Vienna. For four years he worked for an Austrian company, and then moved to Berlin and joined the A.E.G. Company. After the war, he joined the Institute, which had been very heavily damaged, and he was closely associated with the rebuilding and re-equipping of the faculty of mining and metallurgy. He has written numerous papers, and I am sure we are going to have a most entertaining and interesting evening's talk. The President: Gentlemen, I am sure you would like me to thank Professor Pawlek for his talk tonight. My knowledge of pressure leaching is particularly small, limited to a friendship with Professor Frank Forward, to whose original work at Fort Saskatchewan reference has been made by Professor Pawlek. I enjoyed Professor Pawlek's talk, and as a mining engineer I managed to follow most of the argument, mainly because it was so lucidly presented, aided by these informative slides; but I never realised how complicated a problem this process can be. I am taking the liberty of asking Professor Howat to express our thanks from a more technical point of view. After Professor Howat has spoken, and possibly posed a few questions, I shall throw the meeting open in the hope that various people here will be prepared to ask questions. I see one or two gentlemen who have been over in Canada studying pressure leaching lately, and I hope they will ask questions, informally if they so wish. We will not record the full proceedings of this meeting tonight, in the hope that there will be more questions of a general nature. Thank you. Professor Howat: Mr President, Professor Pawlek, I am afraid I am up here under false pretences, because the matter that I thought I was asked to do was to propose a word of thanks, and I usually thought that a word of thanks was taken at the end,-however. It is always very intriguing to think that for all these thousands of years that have passed, pyrometallurgical processes have provided the main methods of extracting metals from their ores. Within the last 100 years, hydro metallurgical processes have become of increasing importance, and it is quite interesting to speculate that the largest single hydrometallurgical process is the one that we operate in this country,-which was devised by two distinguished countrymen of mine,-namely, McArthur and Forrest.
