In extracting base metals from ore bodies, sulphide as well as oxide, the main environmental concern is sulphur, whether in the form of sulphurous gases or sulphate in liquid form. Generally sulphur is in over supply in developed countries mainly because of strict legislation to capture it. In developing countries on the other hand there is usually a shortage of sulphur because of less strict environmental legislation. Africa falls in this second category and the African continent imports substantial amounts of sulphur despite the fact that large quantities of sulphur is emitted by smelters, thermal power stations, coal mines, fertilizer manufacturers and others. Other than making acid from gaseous emissions, existing methods to capture sulphur from gaseous and liquid effluents are uneconomical and it ends up in the environment either as ammonium sulphate (from gaseous effluents) or as gypsum (from liquid effluents). The CSIR?s Environmentek and Pyroserv has developed a process whereby gaseous sulphur emissions and sulphates in liquid effluents can be economically captured and converted into elemental sulphur and metal carbonates. The elemental sulphur is of high purity as it is precipitated from a gas stream and is readily marketable. The metal carbonates (barium or calcium) can be recycled back to the process or marketed. The only harmful byproduct of the process is carbon dioxide. Should natural gas or methane be available the carbon dioxide could be reduced by about one third. Should solar, wind or hydro energy be available to generate hydrogen the carbon dioxide emissions would be zero. Employing this technology could make Africa independent of sulphur imports and furthermore reduce the impact of acid rain and seepage of sulfate from gypsum and other waste dumps into the environment.

1 Initiating Systems ? a definition An initiation system is a combination of explosive devices and component accessories specifically designed to convey a signal and initiate an explosive charge from a safe distance. In the use of explosives, the initiating system performs the functions of transmission and control of the firing signal to each explosive charge. As functional groups, initiating systems may be considered as: Starters Those which provide the initial signal to start the blasting process. Surface systems Products which provide transmission of the starter signal and delay timing (if any) across the surface of the blast outside the blast hole. In-hole systems Products which provide the signal transmission, delay timing (if any) and the initial explosives energy in the blast hole.1 2 Different types of Initiating Systems The initiation systems commonly used in Sub Saharan Africa are: ? Detonating cord and detonating relay systems ? Capped fuse and igniter cord systems ? Shock tube non electric systems ? Electric systems ? Electronic detonators 3 Overview of Electronic Delay Detonator Technology Conventional detonators use pyrotechnic delay elements and the variation of the actual delay periods is at best approximately 1% the nominal delay. The lack of guaranteed precision common to all pyrotechnic systems enhances the likelihood of negative environmental blasting effects.3 For example, take a 500 ms in hole delay. In conventional detonators this means that 95 % of shots fire within 10 ms of the mean. i.e. a window of 20 ms. Taking a fixed interval between shots of 25 ms, with a range of ± 3 ms, a very ragged firing pattern could be expected which in practice would result in non uniform fragmentation.

The current global economic climate has adversely affected the resources industry in general. For the gold mining industry, even though the gold price has been stable as compared to other resources, there is still a need to cut costs even further in order to be profitable and sustainable. Of all the costs that are associated with mining, comminution of ore accounts for the majority. Comminution costs constitute mainly electricity, grinding balls and liners. Of these three components, grinding balls form the major portion of the consumable costs, and can be as high as 40%?45% of the total. As a result, proper grinding ball selection is a key consideration towards reducing mining costs. This paper discusses quality control procedures that can be conducted in order to select the best grinding balls for a particular application. Introduction In South African metalliferous mines, stoping operations are largely confined to narrow, tabular orebodies making mechanization extremely difficult. Limited flexibility in terms of stope width has necessitated drilling by means of hand held, pneumatic rock drills at most of our operations. As the largest producer of platinum in the world, we drill in excess of forty million stope blast holes per annum. Cleaning of the broken ore is also done by conventional means—utilizing scrapers and scraper winches. Conventional methods such as these carry high costs in terms of risk exposure as well as labour intensity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of a long hole stoping system suitable for the narrow platinum reefs. The new system had to be substantially safer and more cost effective than conventional mining. We selected a site that was conducive to mechanized mining and set out the parameters that we considered would meet our requirements. We then conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the conceptualized long hole stoping system in terms of specific goals. An analysis of the proposed system identified the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). One of the most critical goals was to be able to create a man-freestope. This would mitigate the safety risk associated with normal stoping operations, as well as the inefficiency cost previously referred to. Other challenges included setting targets for long hole accuracy, stoping width reduction and specific blasting system performance for long hole stoping. We also modelled a critical span that we considered to be inherently safe and to ensure hangingwall stability, throw-blastcleaning and overall system productivity. Anglo Platinum Research and Development and Sandvik Tamrock entered into an agreement for the supply of a specialized long hole-drilling machine. The system was implemented and tested by the mine with the support of the other participants. The results achieved met our expectations. It was demonstrated that with this method of mining it is possible to have a man-free/support-free stope face and to achieve a reduction in shaft head cost per ton whilst reducing dilution. Mine personnel and Tamrock carried out a full risk assessment on the drill rig before transporting underground. A further risk assessment was carried out when the machine was in position underground. Mining layout See Figure 1 and Figure 2 for a detailed description. Drill rig The drill rig was a combination of a Secoma P-Low LC 10long hole feed and an Axera low profile carrier. Inauguration of the new political dispensation in South Africa in 1994 initiated a dynamic shift in the ownership, management and development of the country’s affluent mineral heritage. The process of substituting the old South African regime with a new equitable system, started soon after the 1994 election of the African National Congress (ANC) to parliament. The Congress’ Freedom Charter revealed the intent of the new dispensation when it called for radical transformation of mineral development. However, since 1955 there have been important changes affecting the rules of mineral development. These are: •Firstly, a drastic change in politics ushered in by negotiation, a spirit of reconciliation and a desire to settle disputes peacefully •Secondly, the globalization of the South African mining industry in tandem with the opening of domestic mineral resources to foreign capitalists; and •Thirdly, the introduction of sustainable development as a holistic approach to mineral development in order to replace traditional narrow-minded environmental management. Each of these significantly shaped the new mineral investment environment of South Africa. This paper represents a summary of the historical developments leading to the current Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act No. 28 of 2002, its Regulations, the much-publicised Broad-Based Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter and its associated Scorecard.

The stability of rock slopes is significantly influenced by their curvature in plan view. The importance of this in open pit mining is indicated by the fact that, in a deep pit, steepening of the slopes by 1° may save as much as $100 million. It is considered that there are two significant factors that play a part in the influence of plan curvature. These two factors are the effect of stress, and the effect of geological structure. The scant literature that pertains to this aspect of rock slope design was reviewed. The geometrical influence of the plan curvature was then investigated. It was seen that it has a parabolic effect on the maximum possible wedge that can fail into a circular pit, where the tighter the concave curvature the smaller the wedge. The plan curvature also affects the volume of a particular wedge, where concave slopes result in an exponential decrease in the volumes and convex slopes have exponentially increased wedge volumes. A change in the strike of the wedge did not affect the curvature’s influence on the volume, but the volumes of shallower dipping wedges were affected more by the influence of the plan curvature. La stabilité des talus des roches est très influence par la courbure de celles ci dans la vue en plan.Son importance de l peut arriver à sauver même $100 millions. La courbure plane aussi affecte le volume d’un particulier su relèvement ou les talus concaves résultent dans une décroissance exponentielle en volume alors que les talus convexes accroissent la volume de ces su relèvements (bosse). Le changement de l’orientation de la bosse (su relèvement) perpendiculairement ou obliquement n’ a par affecte l’influence de al courbure sur le volume mais les volumes des bosse (su relèvement) peu profonds étaient affectes par la courbure des plans. Die Stabilität der Felsensteigungen wird erheblich durch ihre Biegung im Plan beeinflußt. Der Wert von diesem in der Tagebaugrube wird durch die diese Tatsache, in einer tiefen Grube, steepening der Steigungen durch 1° angezeigt; kann soviel wie $100 Million speichern. Es wird betrachtet, daß es zwei bedeutende Faktoren gibt, die eine Rolle im Einfluß der Planbiegung spielen. Diese zwei Faktoren sind der Effekt des Druckes und der Effekt der geologischen Struktur. Zircon is a naturally occurring silicate of zirconium, which is used in large quantities (~1 million tonnes per annum) for its refractory properties and its extreme chemical inertness. All zircons contain uranium and thorium bound into the crystal lattice, generally at levels up to 500 ppm of uranium plus thorium. This paper focuses on one aspect of the zircon industry—the ability to safely transport large quantities of zircon sand. Currently zircon is not classified as a radioactive material for transport purposes. However, this is because of a factor used in the exemption clauses of the IAEA code on safe transport of radioactive materials. The objective of this study was to determine the validity of this factor, and was submitted as part of an IAEA Coordinated Research Project (CRP). The study is based primarily on measured rather than modelled data and covers the transport of large quantities of zircon from producers in South Africa to customers in Europe. Both occupational exposure of workers and exposure of members of the public have been considered. The transport routes studied cover rail, road, ocean-going ship and inland barge transport of unpackaged bulk products. The study showed that the most exposed member of the public would receive 10µSv/annum,while the most exposed worker would receive 144µSv/annum of exposure. It is concluded that these levels are well below all regulatory limits for such activities involving naturally occurring materials. The study also showed that normal operational exposures are higher than those in accident scenarios, a feature which does not occur with higher activity materials. It is further concluded that the study validates the use of the factor of 10 in TS-R-1, as applied to zircon sand. Additionally it is also concluded that the exemption currently applied to the transportation of bulk zircon sand is valid.

Reviewer: R. H. Eric This edition is organized in twenty-three chapters, and contains exactly 500 pages including three appendices and an index. The first and second editions were published in 1976 and 1980 respectively, and both contained nineteen chapters. The second edition brought the operating data and process descriptions up to date. The third edition covers comprehensively the changes that have taken place in the primary copper industry over the past two decades. For example, reverberatory furnaces now make up only a third of the major primary smelting furnaces, compared with about three-quarters in the 1970s. Control of air and water pollution and recycling are given much more emphasis, along with novel and emerging technologies.

Introductory remarks by author When Mr R. C. J. Goode suggested preparation of a paper in the area of manpower utilization in South Africa, I was, while keen to accept his invitation, somewhat hesitant for two reasons. Firstly, I recognized the great difficulty of making a factual contribution, because of the lack of really relevant statistical information available, the fact that much of it is out of date, and the difficulty of researching and co-ordinating it and of evaluating a statistically sound resultant viewpoint. Experience in the actual preparation of this paper has done nothing to change my view in this respect. Secondly, it is obvious that a paper presented to a meeting of this Institute, by a member of it, would be expected to devote considerable attention to the subject in the mining industry. I am not directly employed by the mining industry, although my company has carried out extensive assignments for various sectors of it both in this country and in other parts of the world, since the 1939-45 war. I am more conscious than most of the tremendous technical and managerial skills at the disposal of the industry in this country, and consequently am equally conscious of the hazards of publishing facts and figures which might be taken to indicate any criticism of performance. I am aware that some of the information that I am about to present may indeed generate comment, and possibly even critical comment. I would like to be regarded therefore in presenting this information, as a member of the group, rather than an external critic. Under these circumstances, comment can only be constructive, and this is my earnest hope. The contribution of my paper, if contribution there is, will I hope be in the area of assessing labour productivity in mining, and in secondary industry in such a way that the performance of each against its own past results is comparable. This task has not for the present been to my knowledge attempted, and in advance I wish to take out authors' insurance against legitimate criticism from professional economists and others, by stating that I am well aware of possible short-comings in the arguments. Nevertheless I believe that under the circumstances I have, with the important assistance of several people, been able to take the subject further than has been the case in the past. Finally, I have related productivity in the mining industry and in secondary industry to a target of productivity in the Republic of South Africa. I was fortunate recently in being able to attend a series of lectures by a prominent economist in America. He introduced his subject by calling it 'A broad survey of macro-economics'. Perhaps I might be permitted to describe my paper, in the same idiom, as 'The macro-management of labour'.

High density slurry and paste tailings systems offer significant environmental benefits primarily related to reduced water consumption. However, these potential advantages need to be evaluated on a project-by-project basis. The successful design of a thickened or paste tailings system requires that the system is designed to accommodate the effect of the high density slurry on pumps, pipelines and the overall system operation. The transport system must be designed as an integrated unit and the interaction of all the components need to be considered. The transport system includes the slurry preparation plant, the pump station and the pipeline. This paper assesses the impact of increasing the slurry density in a platinum tailings system from conventional densities to thickened and paste tailings densities. As slurry density and rheology increase, there is a sharp increase in energy consumption for the additional water savings and this additional cost needs to be considered. A case study shows that there is a considerable benefit in increasing densities to the point at which tailings can be still be deposited in the standard manner. For existing systems, increasing density can result in an increased capacity at a marginal power cost, provided that the slurry is not too viscous. For a new system, a smaller pump and pipeline can result in lower capital costs and a marginally higher energy cost, if the optimum density is selected. Keywords: tailings, paste, pumping, slurry

It is evident from most admired companies, globally, that they drive key priorities such as teamwork, customer focus, fair treatment of employees, initiative and innovation into their organisations. It is clearly proofed in all the research that the role of the human factor, and therefore human behaviour, is pivotal to companies striving to accomplish goals such as competitiveness, customer delight, high quality, growing productivity as well as a safety-committed work force. The challenge of leadership is to change the worker’s poor perception of safety to an excited, empowered, valued employee who is continuously committed to the achievement of high levels of health, safety and conformance – the challenge therefore is to transform from within. Any work force needs a set of behavioural rules which work for it – including safety rules and critical safety behaviours, which are accepted through involvement leadership, encouragement and support.

Although some of the platinum(II/IV) and rhodium(III) chemistry is considered ?old? and well-known, the application of modern multinuclear NMR spectroscopic methods to this chemistry in solution reveals new details about their rich and relevant solution chemistry. In this paper we will briefly illustrate that the highly-sensitive 195Pt NMR shielding is an excellent probe to explore aspects such as solvation, ion-pairing, and the hydrolysis chemistry of inter alia [PtCl6-n(H2O)n]n-2 (n=0-5). Moreover the novel use of 35Cl/37Cl and 18O isotopes effects as unique NMR ?fingerprints? leading to a new and unambiguous method of chemical speciation of the numerous possible PtII/IV and RhIII complexes present in halide-rich aqueous solutions. In the case of Rh(III) chemistry a new, direct speciation distribution diagram has been established for [RhCln(H2O)6-n]3-n complexes (n = 3-6) in HCl solution at 292 K with these methods.

The anisotropic behaviour of “Athens Schist” has been brought out through the testing of specimens with varying orientation of schistosity with respect to the major principal stress under uniaxial, triaxial and dynamic conditions. A large number of results from tests on intact rock specimens of the “Athens Schist” were statistically analysed and evaluated. Le comportement anisotropique des roches du système “Schistes d’ Athènes” a été déterminé sur des épreuves avec une orientation différente de la schistosité par rapport à l’axe de chargement sous des conditions axiales, triaxiales et dynamiques. Un grand nombre des résultats a été statistiquement analysé et discuté. Zur Bestimmung der anisotropen Eigenschaften der Athen Schiefer wurden einaxialen, dreiaxialen und dynamischen Kompressionsversuchen an Gesteinskernen durchgeführt, bei denen die Belastungsachse verschiedenen Neigungen gegen die Schieferung hat. Die Messreihen an anisotropen unzerreissbaren Fels Samplen von Athen Schiefer wurden statistisch analysiert.

A Special General Meeting of the Institute was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg on Wednesday, 29th September, 1971. The President, Prof. D. D. Howat opened the meeting at 9.55 a.m. The President read the notice of meeting which was as follows: "In order to bring industry into closer liaison with the work of your Institute and to place the Institute's finances on a sound basis your Council recommends that companies be admitted to membership of the Institute under clause 2.6 of the Constitution, that is, as Non-Corporate members. The designation for this class of member will be that of "Company Affiliate". 2 Membership: This clause to be amended as follows:- 2.6 "Non-Corporate members shall comprise the grades of:- Company Affiliate Honorary Fellow Graduate Associate Student" 2.6.1 This clause to be added:- "Companies involved in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries are eligible to become company affiliates" 2.14 Add:- "A special certificate shall be issued to all company affiliates". After giving the background to the recommendation made by Council the President asked for a proposer and seconder for the resolution. Mr J. K. E. Douglas proposed and Mr D. G. Maxwell seconded the resolution. The meeting agreed that the constitution be amended as proposed. The meeting closed as 10.05 a.m.

High pressure grinding technology has gained further interest in various industries. So far in the mining industry, machines are in operation in diamond mines and iron ore applications. In gold and copper ore processing, test work has been conducted showing considerable operational and process benefits. Similar benefits can be expected from HPGR applications in the platinum industry due to the preferred ore breakage along grain boundaries, thus liberating the PGE particles. This paper will provide an update on the state of high pressure grinding roll technology. Developments in the design of high pressure grinding rolls, for minimized maintenance requirements and availability just as high as conventional mills, will be presented. Plant flow sheets and concepts will be discussed, which allow for a reduction of capital and operating cost in comparison to existing two-stage milling circuits.

The study was intent on assessing the socio-economic impact of a zinc mine in South Africa through the application of people-centric digital tools using a case study research methodology. The global mining industry is undergoing significant technological shifts to modernize, improve operational sustainability, and align with the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) agenda. While the case study mine is a more modernized mine, continuous improvement around the ‘social’ pillar becomes critical, and to this end application of people-centered digital tools presented as the vehicle to understand community needs and impacts. Despite considerable annual corporate social investment by mines annually, the overall impact or social return on investment is marginally understood. Towards contributing to addressing this gap, digital ESG ‘social-related’ data gathering tools for mines decision-making were developed, including the training-needs assessment tool, community-social needs assessment, small, micro, and medium enterprise (SMME) communications and engagement tool, digital leadership competencies gap assessment tool, and change management blueprint, which further allowed for customization to the mining context. Hence, the novelty of this paper relates to applying digital tools to provide real-time information of the needs of a community, both socially and economically. The findings suggested that these digital tools enabled gathering of information for the establishment of regional and operational baselines towards enabling of social investment returns in relation to socio-economic transformation development interventions. These tools have been applied to a zinc mine context, with lessons and experiences obtained through this study, invaluable to the application of these digital tool in other mines in South Africa. The study was conducted in September 2023 across five host communities, surrounding the zinc mine, in the Northern Cape region, with 120 participants involved in the application of three relevant community-related digital tools, which included the training needs, community-social needs, and SMME communications and engagement tools. It was evident that the digital ESG tools could be used for data gathering for the mine’s informed decision-making and allowed for securing of insights on community needs in near real-time, and further proved practical for community use.
