The Bureau of Mines has conducted desorption work on fine coal particles at near atmospheric pressure. An apparatus has been developed that uses a capacitance manometer to measure desorption of methane from coal particles up to 2 inches in diameter and pressures up to 1,000 psi. This will make it possible to duplicate the desorption process as it occurs in its natural under- ground environment.

Heats of formation of three crystalline oxides of rhenium (Re02, ReO3 and Re207) have been determined by the method of solution calorimetry, using an aqueous perchloric acid--ceric perchlorate solvent. Copper metal and cupric oxide were utilized as auxiliary substances. Heats were determined at 298' K for the reactions Re + 2CuO = Re02 + 2Cu, Re + 3CuO = ReO3 + 3Cu, and 2Re + 7CuO = Re207 + 7Cu. Standard heats of formation were derived using the value of -37.23 ±0,15 kcal/mole as the heat of formation of CuO. The standard molal heats of formation of the rhenium oxides were determined: Re02, -107.3 ±0.8 kcal; ReO3, -140.8 ±0.9 kcal; and Re207, -301.9 ±1.8 kcal.

The modest mineral industry of Afghanistan continued to suffer adversely from internal disorders that were essentially the result of the continued presence of elements of the armed forces of the U.S.S.R. Despite press reports near yearend intimating that the Soviets might reduce troop strength in Afghanistan, there were no indications of any significant numeric reductions. Indeed, there were clear demonstrations of heightened military actions along the Afghani-Pakistani border, including bombing raids on settlement sites for Afghanis within the territorial limits of Pakistan, actions hardly demonstrative of conditions indicative of Soviet withdrawal.

On June 1, 2004, the underground coal mine ventilation safety standards under the Code of Federal Regulations (Title 30, Part 75) became effective for the use of a conveyor belt entry as an intake air course to ventilate working sections. These standards, also known as the Belt Air Rule, contained a section which limited the air velocity in the conveyor belt entry to no greater than 500 feet per minute unless otherwise approved by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration in the fire suppression system section of a mine?s ventilation plan. The Belt Air Rule included a requirement dictating compatibility of air velocity with fire suppression systems. The final rule of limiting air velocity in the belt entry was challenged in the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The court granted that petition and vacated the requirement on the air velocity cap, according to MSHA. The removal of the air velocity cap from the final rule, paired with the compatibility requirement, led to a need for research on high air velocity?s influence on fire suppression system performance in belt entries. Test data was needed that illustrated the relationship between fire suppression system performance and air velocity, especially with the increased use of wider belts in underground coal mines, so National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and MSHA collaborated to obtain the data. Reliably measure stress chan¬ges in order to assess stability of mine openings. Approach: A durable, permissible, sensor and readout system have been developed and tested. How It Works: The stress sensing element is a taut steel wire which is, vibrated at its natural frequency, If the tension on the wire is changed because of deformation of the sensor housing, the natural frequency of the wire changes. This effect is similar to decreasing or increasing the pitch of a violin string by loosening or tightening it. Because the stress sensor electrical output is a frequency signal, rather than an amplitude signal, its accuracy is unaffected by the resistance of the signal wire, or other attenuation. Signal wires can be a mile or longer without affecting accuracy. When a button is pushed on the readout box, the sensor wire is electromagnetically excited and vibrates at its natural frequency. That signal causes a readout in illuminated digits. (By referring to calibration chart and the previous reading, the user knows the change in stress.) This system is permissible. To install the sensor, a slightly oversize hole is drilled into the mine pillar. Next, a special tool is used to both position the sensor and wedge it in place. Experimental work has been done to refine and to confirm an analytical procedure by which gas-liquid chromatographic (GLC) spectra are interpreted from retention time data alone. The rationale of this spectra interpretation technique involves whether or not a given peak invariably represents the same component or component mixture; if not, what factors influence changes in peak identifications. To answer these questions, peak-identification procedures, based mainly on the use of subtractive columns, were developed and applied to interpret GLC spectra of several exhaust (and fuel) samples.

Researchers associated with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), are investigating injuries (fatal and nonfatal) attributed to water well drillers during well drilling activities. Injury data, obtained from various sources, suggest that many water well drillers are experiencing unnecessarily high insurance premiums and very avoidable citations or violations from the direct result of accidents, injuries, and fatalities occurring throughout the water well drilling industry. Expensive insurance premiums and unnecessary citations are the direct result of poor health and safety practices. Visits to numerous water well drilling sites were conducted by NIOSH personnel to characterize and identify the injury data collected and to provide inexpensive strategies to prevent, minimize, and eliminate safety and health issues associated with water well drilling activities.

To cool hot working environments in deep mines more efficiently, while substantially reducing the maintenance required by presently used cooling coil heat exchangers. Approach A mine's chilled water supply cools fresh air enroute to hot working areas, in an improved, direct-mixing heat exchanger. How It Works Warm, fresh ventilation air traveling through the mine's ventilation tubing enters the lower portion of the cooler heat exchanger through a large round opening designed to accept the ventilation duct. This air flow is turned upward and evenly distributed by egg-crate lattice and pair guide vans at the bottom of the cooler. On the diagram, warm air enters at the bottom left. As the air moves upward through the cooler, it passes through a plastic or wire mesh pad which is arranged so that it offers the most resistance to upward airflow immediately above the cooler inlet: this more or less equalizes the upward air flow along the length of the cooler. The air next moves through the cold water sprays, and then through a wire-mesh demister pad before exiting from the cooler at the top right. Cooling of the air is accomplished in several stages. As the incoming air passes through the lower plastic or wire mesh pad, it is exposed to water flowing downward through the pad to the water sump. This is water that has fallen from the sprays or dripped from the upper wire-mesh mist eliminator. This water is slightly warmer than the spray water since it has already done some cooling,

This Bureau of Mines investigation measured the low-temperature heat capacities of FeOC1(c) and FeC13(c) in the temperature ranges of 6 to 305 K and 4.6 to 300 K, respectively. The standard entropies (S°, 298.15 K) of FeOCl(c) and FeC13(c) were derived as 19.73±0.03 cal/deg-mole and 35.33±0.07 cal/deg-mole. A large lambda transition was observed in the heat capacity of FeC13(c) at 8.4 K. The standard enthalpy of formation (?H°f, 298.15 K) of FeOC1(c) was determined to be -98.23±0.22 kcal/mole by HC1 solution calorimetry. High-temperature enthalpy measurements (H-H298.15) of FeOC1(c) were determined to 700 K by precision drop calorimetry. Standard thermodynamic formation data and related functions were tabulated at various temperatures for FeOC1(c) and FeC13(c).

Two methods for electrowinning tungsten from wolframite [(Fe,Mn)W04] were investigated. The first method, direct electrowinning from wolframite concentrate dissolved in molten salt mixtures composed essentially of various combinations of sodium phosphates, sodium borates, and sodium halides, yielded impure products. The second method was electrowinning from a halide-tungstate melt that was obtained from a high-temperature, two-phase extraction of tungstic oxide (W03) from wolframite. Electrolysis in electrolytes prepared from addition of sodium metaphosphate (NaPO3) and boric oxide (B2O3) to the halide-tungstate melt produced tungsten metal of 99.9 percent purity. Tungsten carbide (WC) was electrodeposited from the halide-tungstate melt when the melt was adjusted to contain 82 mole-percent NaCI and 6.0 mole-percent each of W03, sodium metaborate (Na2B204), and caustic soda (NaOH).

The purpose of this investigation was to obtain subsurface information on the John Burdette barite-fluorite deposit, Garrard County, Ky. The deposit was intersected in each of five inclined diamond-drill hales aggregating 1,163 feet. All holes were drilled from the hanging wall of the deposit; the inclinations varied from minus 41° to minus 75°. Disseminated metallic sulfides were noted in the drill cores from holes 1, 2, 4, and 5. The deepest drilling was hole 5, which intersected the deposit at approximately 490 feet down dip. Visual inspection of the cores did not indicate mineralization of economic importance; therefore, no chemical analyses were conducted. Condensed logs of diamond-drill cores are included in this report. All drill cores were shipped to the Bureau of Mines core library in Minneapolis, Minn., for future reference,

UPTREND in value of mineral production in the Commonwealth of Australia continued in 1963, again pacing the country's general economic growth rate. Increases occurred in output of most raw and processed mineral products, including bauxite, copper, iron ore, pig iron, steel, lead, zinc, cement, gypsum, pyrite, coal, and refined petroleum products. Although the economy of Australia has been traditionally based on wool and agricultural products, in recent years the country has become highly industrialized. Nearly one-third of the 3.6 million total civilian labor force is engaged in manufacturing. Employment in mines and quarries occupies 1.4 percent of the national labor force.

This paper presents plant design and cost estimates for limestone treatment of acid mine water covering a wide range of quality and quantity conditions. The treatment process consists of limestone neutralization, aeration, solids settling, and concentration. The design criteria for the various operation functions are based on pilot plant performance, laboratory data, and established mine water treatment standards. Unit costs have been assumed and are related to general market prices and conditions. These estimates serve as preliminary indicators of what it would cost to construct and operate a mine water treatment plant.

The safety record of the mineral and mineral-fuel mining and processing industries in 1965 was improved slightly, as indicated by the reduced injury-frequency and severity rates. The overall operating activity was higher in 1965 as measured by the gains in the number of men working and in the total man-hours of worktime. Injury Experience.-The rate of occurrence of all disabling work injuries in the mineral industries was 17.65 per million man-hours in 1965. This overall rate comprised frequencies of 0.28 for fatal and 17.37 for nonfatal work injuries, of which both were slightly better than the corresponding rates of 0.29 and 17.53 in 1964. Fatalities totaled 537; 5 less than in 1964. However, the total of 32,982 nonfatal injuries was 575 higher than in 1964. This larger number of nonfatal disabilities was offset by the increased worktime so that the nonfatal frequency rate decreased in 1965.

This chapter explains the Federal regulations governing the use of dust respirators in mines and tunnels and describes the most common dust respirators used. Filter materials and filter efficiencies for respirators are discussed. This chapter also gives some guide-lines for respirator use and recommends sources for more dust respirator information. Respirator effectiveness in reducing dust exposure usually exceeds the effectiveness of most engineering control methods. RESPIRATOR REGULATIONS [Different regulations govern respirator use in coal mines, metal/nonmetal mines, and tunnels under construction.] Coal mines under Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) jurisdiction. Coal mine operators are required to meet dust standards using only engineering control methods. Typical engineering control methods include ventilation and water sprays. Respirators are not regarded as an engineering control method, so respirators cannot be used in lieu of engineering controls.

Improve the safety of roof bolting machine operators working in underground coal mines while maintaining or improving efficiency of the roof bolting operation. Approach The Bureau of Mines funded research under contact to develop equipment that would assure greater safety in drilling holes and installing roof bolts. The research led to the design and fabrication of a roof-boiling machine that allows its operator to per-form drilling and bolting tasks while under permanently sup-ported roof or canopy protection. How the Prototype Works The major components of the remote-control roof bolter are a flexible-shaft drill that provides continuous drilling capability without the need to Stop to add drill extensions for long holes; a roof-bolt inserter that can bend a longer-than-seam height roof bolt into the drilled hole; and a roof-bolt lifter/torquer that completes insertion of the roof bolt into the hole and torques it to the desired tension.

The heats of solution of erbium chloride in water and in hydrochloric acid and of erbium oxide in hydrochloric acid were determined. The results reveal a discrepancy of 10.5 kcal. per gram-atom between the heats of combustion and solution of erbium reported in the literature, the heat of combustion being more negative. The heat of combustion of erbium t4)4 and its heat of solution in hydrochloric acid (1, 18) have been reported in the literature. The heat of solution of erbium chloride was determined in two studies (2, 19). The present work was undertaken to check the reported heats of solution of erbium chloride and to determine the heat of solution of erbium oxide in hydrochloric acid. The latter quantity permits the heats of combustion and solution of erbium to be compared for mutual consistency. It was also desired to determine the degree of similarity between the thermochemistry of yttrium and erbium.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine the effectiveness of long holes in degasifying an area of the Upper Split of the Lower Sunnyside coalbed at Kaiser Steel CO.'s Sunnyside No. 1 mine. These holes were drilled from the two outside entries of a section that was closed to mining because of excessive methane emissions. Two holes drilled to 430 and 450 feet produced initial gas flows of 160,000 and 127,000 cfd, respectively. Sixteen days after the completion of the second hole, the total gas production declined to just over 144,000 cfd. In 9 months of degasification, over 35 MMcf of commercial-quality gas has been removed from the coalbed. The combined gas flows declined to 106,000 cfd in the 9-month period. The two holes have reduced face emissions by about 40 pct.
