The compound 2Na2O?3CaO?5Al2O3 occurs as a minor phase in lime-soda sinters prepared for extracting aluminum from siliceous aluminum-bearing materials. About 99 percent extraction of sodium and aluminum from synthesized 2Na2O.3CaO.5Al2O3 was obtained in solutions of NaOH-Na2CO3 at leaching temperatures of 50° C and above. Extractions in water were low because insufficient NaOH was generated by hydrolysis. Extractions in NaOH solutions were limited to about 80 percent owing to the precipitation of hydrated calcium aluminates. Rapid extractions of 100 percent were obtainable in NaaC03 solutions, but the subsequent rapid precipitation of alumina trihydrate caused losses in alumina recovery.

The rate of the heterogeneous reaction between reactor-grade yttrium and lithium fluoride in lithium fluoride-yttrium fluoride mixtures was measured using a quartz spring balance. At 950° C the magnitude of the rate of reaction is 10-5 grams of yttrium/cm2-sec. The heat of activation for the reaction is 38.3 kilocalories per mole of LiF. A surface-controlled mechanism is proposed in which LiF is adsorbed on the yttrium metal surface. An activated complex is formed when additional LiF reacts with the adsorbed LiF-metal site. The activated complex then decomposes to the products) which are lithium metal and YF3. The importance of the reaction in the electrowinning of yttrium metal from fluoride electrolytes is discussed.

Field Demonstration of the Remote Mine Sealing System in a Coal Mine 8. 1 Selection of Field Test Site Eastern Associated Coal Corporation (EACC) offered its Federal No. 1 coal mine in Grant Town, West Virginia as the site for field testing of the remote sealing system. The choice of Federal No. 1 mine was particularly appropriate as the first attempt at fire control by remote sealing was done in this mine in 1963. EACC provided the men and equipment required for much of the initial preparation. Considerable assistance, advice, and background on coal mining technology was given by Mr. William Laird, Vice President for Research and Development, EACC, and by Mr. Lawrence Jackson, Resident Engineer at the Federal No. 1 mine. District 3 USBM office, the West Virginia Bureau of Mines, the Technical Support Group of the USBM, and Local 4047 of the United Mine Workers of America also cooperated. 8.2 Preparation of Field Test Site 8.2. 1 Underground Site Preparation The underground site chosen for the field testing was in a non-working portion of the mine within a few hundred feet of the main haulage road, as shown in Figure 80. Known as "Seven Switch, " this area was a 20 minute walk or 5 minute "jeep" trip from the man-trip shaft. Ten years having passed since this area was actively worked, considerable effort was required for gob clearing, roof bolting, rock dusting, and rejuvenating the track from the haulage road to the test area. The purpose of this Bureau of Mines project was to develop a method for recovering kyanite and sillimanite from the present zircon-mill tailing of the Jacksonville and Starke, Fla., plants of Humphreys Gold Corp. The kyanite and sillimanite in the ore are not being exploited at present, but procedures for recovering the two minerals were worked out by the Bureau in the interest of conserving natural resources. The current zircon-mill tailing of the Starke plant contains up to 20 percent of a mixture of kyanite and sillimanite. A similar product of the Jacksonville plant contains up to 15 percent kyanite and sillimanite. The average annual production of the tailing now being stockpiled contains several thousand tons of the two minerals. Laboratory batch-flotation tests were made on the materials to determine the feasibility of flotation methods for recovering high-grade concentrates. Various reagents were employed under different conditions to determine the optimum conditions for flotation of kyanite and sillimanite and retardation of the gangue materials. The results of the preliminary flotation tests were encouraging enough to warrant more comprehensive testing of a larger sample of the ore in the laboratory pilot plant.

"The economic features of coal mining must take into account the drain on the man power. Study over a recent 5-year period reveals an average yearly loss of 2,125 underground men, of whom 1,182 are killed by falls of roof and coal, and according to recent data compiled by the Bureau of Mines it is estimated that 54,000 men sustain lost—time disabling injuries from the same cause.Under normal activity of the mines approximately 50 lives are taken by falls of roof during every 10 days the mines are operated, or 5 persons are killed per day, which, at a compensation charge of $5,000 each, amounts to $25,000 per day. Add to this the similar number killed by causes other than by falls of roof and we have $50,000 as an approximate daily fatality charge for each day the mines operate. On the basis of 200 working days per year, this amounts to the alarming figure of $10,000,000 annually. An investment at 5 per cent to yield this amount would require $200,000,000, which is equivalent to a capital investment of $0.40 per ton of coal, produced annually, on the basis of 500 million tons. These figures apply only to fatalities for which a fixed or stated amount is paid for compensation and do not include the compensation and hospitalization paid for the approximately 103,000 upon whom idleness is enforced by a lost-time disability injury. In one State having an annual production equal to approximately 30 per cent of the total bituminous production of the United States, the most recent data shows that for each fatality there are eight serious injuries causing 60 days or more lost time. The frequency rate of accidents for that State is less than the average for the United States, and so a conservative comparison may be made by using the figures of that State in estimating the total serious injuries, which gives 16,000 as losing 60 days or more. The average number of underground employees in the coal mines of the United States for the past 10 years has been approximately 570,000; the annual underground fatalities amount to approximately 2,000 and non-fatalities to 108,000, or a total of 110,000, which means that one out of every 5.17 employees ,or 19.3 per cent, receives an injury which results in either a fatality or a lost-time disability; this figure in a little over five years will reach a number equivalent to 100 per cent of all underground workmen. Against this is the record of many miners who have worked 25 years or more without a lost—time disability injury, indicating that coal mining is not necessarily productive of injury or death to workers.In the matter of falls of roof, it is found that 85 to 87 per cent of all fatalities occur at the working face, face of a room or entry, or in pillar work. It is at the working face that the greatest roof hazards are encountered, and when about 75 per cent of the underground employees spend approximately 90 per cent of their working hours at the face, it is logical that there is where injury is most likely to occur.Although the roof hazards may vary in different beds of coal, experience has proved that roof hazards can be successfully controlled in all coal mines, essentially regardless of the character of the roof if constant care and attention are given by the management and employees in applying the principle of safety. In almost every mining district some companies maintain an extremely low frequency rate of injury, whereas in the same district with essentially the same roof conditions the opposite is true.A study has recently been made of a number of reports upon fatalities in one district of one of the principal coal—producing States and it showed that 50 lives had been lost at 23 mines as the result of falls of roof or sides. These reports were made by the mine officials, safety engineers, and safety committees and an attempt was made to give both the cause and the person or factor responsible for the fatality. Oil- yield data are presented for 40 sets of core samples and 83 sets of drill cuttings collected in 1952-62 from drilling operations in the Uinta basin of eastern Utah . This accumulated information on the location , extent , and richness of oil shales of the Green River formation is used to appraise the deposits as a source of oil and related products . Core samples used in the study were obtained specifically for evaluating oil shale , and they were satisfactory for this purpose , except they did not completely penetrate the formation . The drill- cutting samples were inferior to the core samples and yielded more erratic results . Consequently, oil yields based on cuttings should be regarded as indicative , rather than definite , until substantiated by other means . In general , the oil- yield data indicate Green River oil shale in Uinta basin is not as thick or as uniform as that in the Piceance Creek basin of western Colorado . However , it is an important potential source of oil . Estimates that beds 15 feet or more thick that average 25 gallons of oil per ton represent at least 120 billion barrels of oil in place are supported by the recent oil- yield data .

"It is well known that prevalence and severity of coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP) differ markedly in different regions and mines despite comparable exposures. These variations in the pathogenicity of different coal mine dusts can only partially be explained by the mineral composition of the coal mine dust and the rank of coal. Laboratory studies also do not correlate with the human experience. One major difference between human exposure and laboratory studies is that the coal miner breathes dust from freshly broken coal, while the animals or cells are exposed to stale dust. In an effort to find biochemical clues for resolving this apparent paradox, we have carried experiments to detect differences in chemical reactivities of fresh versus stale coal dust from several U.S. coal mines. Electron spin resonance (ESR) was used as a technique for the direct detection of the concentration and reactivity of free radicals. ESR measurements of freshly ground coal dusts of different ranks and composition showed significant differences in the amount and reactivities of the organic free radicals produced. The half-lives and reactivity patterns of these newly formed species of free radicals seem to correlate with the expected toxicity and pathogenicity of the dust, thereby, providing new clues to the biochemical mechanisms and pathogenesis of CWP. Similar detection of free radicals in freshly crushed quartz suggest that free radicals might play a significant role in the pathogenicity of quartz in causing fibrosis and eventually silicosis.IntroductionThe pathogenesis of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) has been an important topic of concern for decades, but the mechanism of CWP is still not understood. The floor of Shady Valley, Johnson County, Tenn., is underlain by the Shady dolomite formation. In places the residual clay derived from this formation contains considerable manganese oxides. Nine properties in Shady Valley and two in Doe Valley were prospected by the Bureau of Mines from January 1943 to April 1943. The results obtained indicate that the ore bodies are small and spotty and, that the ore is not well-adapted to gravity concentration. The work of the Bureau was confined to the open end of the valley. One mile northeast of the Ham Greer property, Beaverdam Creek enters a rocky gorge, and it was believed that the few prospects in this area were of secondary impor-tance and, owing to the steep slope and general roughness of the terrain, that exploration with the rite', bucket-drill would be impracticable. A total of 4,398.5 feet was drilled in 131 holes. In addition, 235 lineal feet of bulldozer trenches were cut and 4.5 feet of test pits were sunk. The following nine properties were explored in Shady Valley: Bentley, Walker, Blevins, Scott, North Ham Greer, South Ham Greer, Lipford, Blackburn, and Steagall In Doe Valley, the Gerd Shoun and Brookshire properties were explored.

Three hundred and twenty-eight mines and quarries, representing 36 States, took part in the twelfth yearly accident-prevention contest conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and known as the National Safety Competition. Four underground mines and one open-cut mine (which represents the quarry and open-cut mine group), each the leader in its group, were awarded the ?Sentinels of Safety? trophy. Relative standing in the contest" was determined by the number of days lost from accidents in proportion to the total number of man-hours worked. Since 1925, when the National Safety Competition was inaugurated, an increasing interest has been taken in it by mining and quarrying companies as a means of stimulating mine and quarry safety by competition among similar plants. Each participating plant can, on a basis of its standing and record in the contest, determine to what extent its safety program is succeeding or to what extent it needs strengthening. With this information, each company that has a low standing in the contest can intensify its safety-promotion efforts the following year to obtain a? lower rate and possibly win the trophy or achieve honorable mention in the competition. Except for 1929, the National Safety Competition of 1936 represented more man-hours of employment than any other year since the yearly contests began.

In 1991, the USBM (U. S. Bureau of Mines) evaluated the mineral resources of the 174,550-acre Bear Creek-Poker Peak area. Located 40 air miles east from Idaho Falls, ID, the study area is in the Caribou National Forest but is mostly administered by Targhee National Forest. USBM personnel mapped and sampled mines, prospects, and mineralized sites in and near the study area. Five types of mineral occurrences were identified in the study area: phosphate, limestone and travertine, placer gold, coal and uranium (the latter contained in the coal), and oil and gas. The study area has a high potential for oil and gas; evaluation of these commodities were beyond the scope of this study.

A methane emission rate study was conducted in 1969 on a longwall section of a Lower Kittanning coalbed mine in central Pennsylvania. The longwall face was mined with a drum shearer between developed headings on the head end and headings on the tail end that were driven with a ripper-type continuous miner as needed. The study was conducted over 22 consecutive shifts (7-1/3 days). The average methane emission rate from the Lower Kittanning coalbed during mining at the face and developing the headings at the tail end of the face was 34 Am. Caving of the gassy overlying strata as the result of mining at the face increased the methane emission to rates ranging from 702 to 1,049 cfm.

The objective of this Bureau of Mines publication Is to present a nomograph that provides a fast, convenient method for estimating hydrocarbon lease bonus bids for offshore acreage in the Gulf of Mexico. Discounted cash flow analyses were computed from a model derived to show the costs necessary to explore, acquire, develop, produce, and abandon a 5,000-acre block of offshore acreage, and the estimated income from the sale of the hydrocarbons produced from the block. The range of the variables in the financial analyses used to construct the nomograph are prices of oil, $2.50 to $5.00; recoverable hydrocarbon reserves, 44,651,476 to 127,575,645 barrels; and discounted cash flow (DCF) rates of return, 5.0 to 57.2 percent. A total of 1,234 sets of DCF data were used to construct the nomograph. The range of bonus bids shown on the nomograph is from 2 to 90 million dollars ($400 to $18,000 per acre).

"SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONSTests conducted at Mount Weather indicate that clear water is the best bit coolant and cuttings-removal medium for diamond drilling. All of the mediums tested did show that drilling speed increased when drilling with the faster feed ratios (greatest pressure on the bits). In no case, how¬ever, did the increased drilling speed amount to over 16 percent, and even in a long hole the slight increase in drilling speed would be more than offset by the extra time consumed in setting up.Bit wear was excessive when lubricating agents were used, the most footage per bit was obtained when drilling with clear water in the normal manner, and the next best footage was obtained when drilling with circulated water containing no lubricating agent. The diamonds showed little or no wear in any of the bits, and all bits cut well throughout the tests. They were only taken out of service when erosion of the cast metal had progressed to the point where the diamonds were about to roll out. The lubricating agents evidently hold some of the cuttings in suspension, which in turn help to cut the rock but also wear the metal of the bit.No hard-matrix bits were tested, and it is possible that one or more of the lubricating agents might increase the efficiency of such a bit by keeping it sharp and doing away with the necessity of sharpening by sand blasting. Some tests are planned with hard-matrix-type bits and the same lubricating agents used in the tests under discussion, but it is realized that any drilling advantage gained by the bits sharpening themselves may but at least partly offset by excessive wear of the Pump parts."

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to evaluate superplastic behavior in commercial magnesium-base alloys AZ6IA, ZK60A, ZW3, AZ3IB, ZWI, and an experimental Mg-12 pct Al alloy. Strain-rate sensitivity indices (m-values), maximum elongations, and effects of superplastic elongation on tensile properties were determined on fine-grained sheet. Inert-gas-pressure hemisphere-forming tests were conducted on selected sheet stock of the five alloys. Formability trials on AZ31B alloy sheet were conducted on industrial equipment for comparison with commercial superplastic forming of Zn-AI alloy. Closed-die-forming tests were performed on extruded ZK60A rod. All alloys exhibited well over 100-pct elongation, indicating superplasticity, at temperatures and strain rates near the maximum m-values. Tensile properties were generally reduced following 100-pct superplastic elongation, but not to an extent that would preclude use of the commercial alloys in the superplastically deformed condition. The potential for industrial superplastic forming of AZ31B sheet was indicated by hemisphere forming in the laboratory and substantiated in industrial forming trials.

The solubility characteristics of mono calcium aluminate (CaO A₁₂ 0 ) in water and in NaOH , Na₂ CO₂ , and NaOH - Na₂ CO₂ solutions were measured by determining the changes in Al2O3 concentrations in solution over a period of time at a specified temperature . The monocalcium aluminate was synthesized by sintering its starting components for 72 hours at 1,375 ° C. Distilled water and aqueous solutions of technical grades of NaOH and Na₂ CO₂ were used as solvents . The extraction of alumina from the monocalcium aluminate was dependent on the composition of the solvent and partially dependent on temperature for leaching . About 98 percent extraction of alumina from the aluminate occurred in Na₂ CO3 solutions containing 10 to 12 percent NaOH . Other solution compositions produce lesser extractions .

The Bureau of Mines investigated ground support problems in four major block-cave mines to assess the current "state-of-the-art" and to delineate areas for future research. The most significant problem is the inability of present support systems to hold moving ground. Further, as mining progresses to greater depth, this problem becomes more serious. Providing adequate temporary support capable of withstanding primary and secondary blasting is the next most significant problem. A detailed analysis of the effect of mining methods on support problems is also recommended for future research.

Gas-displacement tests were made in Berea Sandstone and Arbuckle Lime-stone cores to determine the relative permeabilities to gas, oil, and water for two-and three-phase dynamic systems. Three-phase relative permeabilities were obtained by displacing oil and water from the core with gas and measuring the flow rates of the three fluids simultaneously. It was found that relative permeabilities to fluids in a porous medium are affected by the saturation distributions of other fluids in the medium as well as by their own saturation distributions.

The effect of cracking by increasing the free space above the charge on the composition and yields of the volatile products from carbonization of Pittsburgh-bed coal and one industrially used blend from Eastern United States and one from Western United States was investigated with the BM-AGA carbonization apparatus. Increasing the free space above the charge from 1 inch to 3 inches, to 6 inches, and to 9 inches resulted in lower tar yields and increased gas and light oil yields. Anthracene and naphthalene yields were increased; quinoline and benzene insoluble fractions of both the tar and pitch increased considerably with increased free space, although the carbon content of the tars and pitches increased only slightly. Increased cracking, occasioned by the increase in free space, resulted in a decrease in the yields of tar acids, tar bases, neutral oils, olefins, aromatics, and paraffins and naphthenes. Gas composition was relatively constant; hydrogen and methane tended to increase and ethane decrease. Results of the investigation are being used to design a unit to upgrade the volatile products of carbonization by cracking the hot products as they leave the carbonization chamber.

The Bureau of Mines studied coking rates of a special Columbia - Geneva six - coal blend to establish the effect of the coking rate on coke properties . The tests were conducted in a 500 - lb , 14 - in experimental slot oven at essentially constant conditions of blend composition , size distribution , surface moisture content , and bulk density . The coking rate was varied as a function of oven flue temperature . Coking rates within the range of 0.56 to 1.35 in/hr were achieved . Increase in the coking rate decreased the size of the coke . The stability factor of the coke showed no significant change with coking rate until coking rates greater than 1.0 in/hr were reached , after which a decrease in the stability factor was observed . The apparent specific gravity increased to a maximum value at coking rates approaching 1.1 in/hr and decreased sharply with further increase in the coking rate . Coke parameters correlated well with the coking rate .

Plastometric tests were made to determine the maximum thickness of the plastic layer for different U.S. coals . The effect of test variables on the maximum thickness of the plastic layer was studied . The values for the maximum thickness of the plastic layer were found to be related to the Gieseler maximum fluidity , plastic temperature range , free swelling index , and other plastic properties of coals . Only a general relationship was observed between the plastometric parameters obtained in these tests and the coking properties of coal .
