This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds of Beaver and Lawrence Counties, Pa. Washability analyses were made on seven coalbed samples, none of which were of metallurgical quality as received. Five of the samples could be sufficiently upgraded to produce acceptable products, and the remaining two samples could not be upgraded to metallurgical quality because their sulfur contents could not be lowered to meet the standard. For steam or power generation, one sample was of low sulfur content as received, one sample could be upgraded to low sulfur content, and three samples could be upgraded to medium sulfur content. The original sulfur content of the remaining two samples can be appreciably reduced by removal of the sink 1.58 speci fic gravity material; however, these coals would be classified as medium sulfur coals both before and after removal of the sink material.

Provide d comprehensive source of up-to-date information about technology for revegetating coal mined lands. Approach A great deal of activity and research in the field of coal mine revegetation has been reported in technical literature, both before and after the passage of Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Ruclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA). This information is widely scattered throughout books, scientific journals, periodicals, Government reports, and other sources, and there has been a need to develop a method of accessing it quickly and efficiently. At the request of the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement which promulgates and enforces regulations implementing the act, the Bureau of Mines has prepared a document that identifies literature relevant to coal mine revegetation. Most of the literature available on this subject has been published during the past 15 years. To tap this reservoir of information, 14 data bases were accessed from DIALOG SDI (Selective Dissemination of Information) Service using three keyword combinations (surface mining and reclamation, strip mining and reclamation, and revegetation). This procedure generated over 7,000 listings. The U.S. Department of Energy's ENERGY data base was selected from the 14 DIALOG bases, both for its large number of listings and for its broad coverage of literature. This data base contains all the unclassified information that passes through the Technical Information Center of the Department of Energy, including reports, journal articles, conferences, patents, books, monographs, theses, and engineering materials relating to energy development.

Legislation and Government Programs.-The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) held public hearings in early 1975 on proposed standards for exposure to inorganic arsenic. The findings obtained at the hearings will be considered to promulgate emission standards. Domestic Production.-Arsenic trioxide (As203) was produced domestically only at the Tacoma, Wash. copper smelter of ASARCO Incorporated. Production data cannot be published. Output rose 9% over that of 1974, shipments were less than half those of 1974, and stocks rose 31 %. Production of arsenic metal, begun by ASARCO in August 1974, continued in 1975.

The feasibility of simultaneously burning several paths through a coalbed to develop a multiple path underground gasification system was investigated by the Bureau of Mines during two experiments, Boreholes were drilled through the overburden and into the coal and arranged in a circle approximately 50 feet from a central borehole. In the first experiment, in an area which had previously been hydraulically fractured,5 air was injected at the center borehole. The coal was ignited at the other boreholes and the fire fronts traveled toward the center, counter to the flow of air, to backward burn paths through the coalbed. Two paths were linked during the first 5 days of operation. The outlets of these two paths were throttled and air pressure was increased to maintain the flow of air, but no other linkages were made. Fourteen days after the two linkages these two paths were opened and gasification was carried on for 10 days, but with only moderate success. In an effort to overcome operating difficulties air was injected at the peripheral boreholes, and the gases were drawn off at the center borehole. Reversed flow operations continued for 12 days and two more paths linked. The heating value of the gas generally was higher than 100 British thermal units per standard cubic foot (B.t.u. per std. c.f.). Because only four of seven paths linked, however, the entire system could not be evaluated with respect to product-gas output and recovery of energy.

Surface vibrations of ground, rock, and structures resulting from blasting or other sources are often measured with portable seismographs. These instruments are usually supported by a three-point mount or tripod which is simply placed on a horizontal surface on which vibration levels are to be measured. The rigid-body motion of a tripod-supported seismograph is considered from the point of view that there should be no slippage of the feet with respect to the surface and none of the feet should leave the surface as a result of imparted motion. From these studies the following design criteria are deduced which assure that the seismograph will respond accurately to vibration levels as large as 1/2 g.:3/ First, the coefficient of friction between the feet and the surface on which the instrument rests should be as large as possible, preferably approaching unity; second, the center of gravity of the instrument should be vertically above the centroid of the three-point mount; and third, the vertical distance between the center of gravity of the instrument and the centroid of the three points of contact with the surface should be less than the perpendicular distance between the centroid point and anyone of the three sides of the triangle formed by the three points of contact. Portable seismographs that do not satisfy these conditions should be clamped to the surface if vibration levels above 0.1 g. are to be recorded.

[Composition profiles for atomic, radical, and stable species, as well as temperature and area expansion ratio profiles, have been determined for a nearly stoichiometric CH4-02-Ar flame and one to which 0.3 percent CF5Br inhibitor had been added. Net reaction rate profiles were calculated for all the observed species. For the normal flame, these and the mole fraction profiles gave rate coefficient information about the elementary reactions in the methane flame, for example, CH. + 0 4- H2CO 0 H, k4 = 1.05 X 1014CM3 mole-1sec-1 for 1,550§T 0,725' K; CO + OH 4 C02 + H, k6= 4.7 X 1011 for 1,350{T X1,750° K. Comparison between the inhibited and normal flame showed that A] and [CH3] were significantly reduced at the lower temperatures in the inhibited flame even though in the hot gas region the [E] [OH!, and [0] were essentially the same in both flames. The CF3Br disappears very early in the flame, relative to the fuel, and the reaction primarily responsible for its disappearance is H v CF3Br 4 HBr + CF3, where k7 is found to be 2.2 X 1014 exp(-9460/RT) for 700-1,550° K. Reaction of the inhibitor with methyl radicals provides for the relatively small amounts of CH3Br observed, but CH3 + Br2 - CHs Br + Br must also occur. The HBr formed reacts rapidly with H atoms to form H2 and Br, but the reaction is soon "balanced" in the flame as may be demonstrated by calculation of the equilibrium constant at various temperatures. The fluoro-carbon fragment produced in reaction (7) also reacts rapidly, in part with methyl radicals to give the observed elimination product CH2CF2 Later in the flame, above -1,400' K, F2CO is formed from the reaction CH2CF2 + 0 P F2CO + CH2 and k., -1.5 X 1013 at 1,600° K. The rather slow decay of carbonyl fluoride is attributed to reaction with H atoms according to the sequence F2CO I H - HF + FCO and FCO + H HF + CO.]

The Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a continuing research effort to develop processes for increasing the recovery and utilization of fluorine from low-grade resources. This current research has shown that over 98 percent of the fluorine in phosphate rock is extracted when the ore is treated with excess phosphoric acid in the presence of water vapor at 150° to 180° C. More than 80 percent of the fluorine can be recovered as fluosilicic acid, which can then be converted to commercially useful hydrogen fluoride or fluorspar by previously developed Bureau processes. Extraction of P205 from the ore was about 98 percent in batch tests and 90 percent in semicyclic tests.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a finite element analysis of roof stresses associated with a 4-foot-high by 18-foot-wide underground coal mine entry. This analysis starts with known loading conditions determined in an underground coal mine in West Virginia and is extended to other possible underground loading conditions. The roof failures predicted by the finite element analysis under known loading conditions correlate well with the roof failures observed underground. The most probable failure modes are identified for the various loading conditions considered. Various failure preventive measures are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines studied the influence of carbonization method, temperature, and carrier gas on the composition of eight different low-temperature tars produced from a Colorado subbituminous coal. A fluidized bed was compared with an entrained bed, temperature was varied from 500° C to 650° C, and external heating using recycle gas as the carrier gas was compared with internal heating using oxygen-containing gas. The entrained bed yielded significantly more m-cresol and m-ethylphenol, indicating that thermodynamic equilibrium was more nearly approached in the system. Increasing the temperature greatly increased the yield of benzenes and naphthalenes, while paraffins, olefins, and total tar acids were reduced. Using oxygen in the carrier gas decreased the yield of low-boiling phenols and increased that of paraffins and olefins at 650° C.

The Bureau of Mines (Bureau) conducted a mineral resource investigation of the French Creek-Patrick Butte study area, in west central Idaho during 1989. No mineral resources or significant occurrences were identified. Other than small scale placer gold, no mineral production is known or recorded. At least 100 lode and 150 placer claims have been located in the study area. Most of the area was examined by ground or areal surveys, and 110 lode and 60 placer samples were taken. Four lode prospects were examined in detail, and all placer claim locations were sampled.

This report presents all available 900 ° C BM- AGA carbonization and related data for coals from the principal beds of the southwest Virginia field in a form which permits ready comparison of product yields and properties of coals and cokes . Thirty- one channel samples from Buchanan , Dickenson , Russell , Tazewell , and Wise Counties were carbonized at 900 ° C in an 18 - inch - diameter retort . Blending properties of 10 of the coals were studied , and expansion of most of the coals and blends was measured in the Bureau of Mines sole - heated oven . Ash Most of the samples were chemically suitable for metallurgical use in coking blends , and their coking properties generally were satisfactory . content exceeded 10 percent in only three samples , and none of the coals contained more than 1.5 percent sulfur . Dry , mineral - matter - free fixed - carbon content of the coals ranged from 62.1 to 77.5 percent . Expansion behavior varied widely , ranging from 16.8 percent expansion to 27.6 percent contraction .

In 1987, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 13,374 acres of the 14,994-acre Ireteba Peaks Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-438) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Clark County, NV, about 4 miles south of Nelson, NV. No identified resources were found within the Ireteba Peaks study area, although there are identified subeconomic resources just outside of the study area boundary. Most of the area is underlain by Tertiary granitic rocks, which apparently postdate mineralization. The area is virtually surrounded by mining districts with mines developed in older rock units. On the north side, quartz monzonite, volcanic tuff, and tuffaceous sediments in the Eldorado mining district host deposits of gold, silver, copper, zinc, and mercury. On the south side, Precambrian gneiss, intrusive andesite porphyry, and hornfels in contact with Quartz monzonite in the Searchlight mining district host gold, silver, copper, and lead deposits. The Newberry mining district to the southeast had copper, gold, and silver mineralization in Precambrian gneiss and andesite.

A high-B.t.u, gas can be synthesized by the catalytic methanation of a mixture of 2.5 to 3 parts of hydrogen to 1 part of carbon monoxide, obtained in the gasification of coal, using a steel catalyst followed by Raney nickel in a hot-gas-recycle system. Conversion of 99 percent of the H2+CO yields a fuel gas with a heating value of 983 to 1130 B.t.u. per cubic foot containing 78 to 96 percent methane, no carbon monoxide, and very small amounts of unsaturated hydrocarbons. With the steel catalyst alone, conversions were 85 to 90 percent, giving a fuel gas of 810 to 868 B.t.u, per cubic foot, or 847 to 975 B.t.u. on a C02-free basis. INTRODUCTION In 1948 the U.S, marketed production of natural gas was 5.15 trillion cubic feet; by 1958 it had reached 11.0 trillion cubic feet, a rate of growth of 8 percent annually. 4 5 Although demand is expected to increase less rapidly, by 1966 it may reach 16 trillion cubic feet, based on an estimated 4.7 percent annual increase.6

The danger from coal dust in mines has been thoroughly demon- strated by experiment, and consequently the study of the inflam- mability of coal dust suspended in air, that is, the readiness with which a cloud of coal dust inflames, is of decided importance to those engaged in coal mining. Much knowledge has been gained from the work done in the large galleries constructed at official and semiofficial stations in this country and abroad, but the study of the coal-dust problem in these galleries requires so much time and is so costly that there is need of a reliable laboratory method for obtaining a classi- fication of the great variety of dusts that occur in mines. The investigation described in this paper was an attempt to devise such a method. It was a preliminary investigation, and work in the same direction is being continued by the Bureau of Mines. As Mr. Frazer has severed his connection with the bureau, it is deemed advisable to publish the results of his study substantially as he prepared them, with little attempt to draw conclusions or to show the bearing of the results on other studies now in progress. The results of these studies and a full discussion of the significance of the laboratory investiga- tions will be published in future reports of the Bureau of Mines. The reader should remember that any laboratory method, since it involves conditions that differ so greatly from those of actual mining, should be thoroughly tested, and the results obtained by it should be confirmed by experiments conducted on a scale simulating mining conditions before final conclusions are drawn. The need of a laboratory method has long been felt, and several investigators have devised apparatus and methods. The work done by Vital, Holtzwart and Von Meyer, Bedson and Widdas, Le Chate- lier, and that of the British Coal Dust Commission is of great interest in this connection. This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research ( C.F.R. ) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council ( C.R.C. ) and the Bureau of lines of the United States Department of the Interior . The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-35.4/ Further reports have been issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.5/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942 . The changing demographics of the mining industry make successful passing of knowledge and skills to the next generation critical. Training methods and technologies are being developed to meet this need. Twenty years ago classroom training was largely a one-way transfer of knowledge through instructor lectures. In contrast, instructors today can use virtual reality technologies to guide trainees as they fully participate in learning experiences. Trainees can interact with the virtual work environment, co-workers, and equipment without being exposed to workplace hazards. The speed of advancement in mine safety, health, and production training shows no sign of slowing in the next 20 years. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have studied and participated in the evolution of miner training. A look at training materials they have created in the past and those they are currently developing reveals changes in methods and technologies over time and also key characteristics which have remained constant. Possibilities for the future can he discussed in the framework of an implementation of virtual reality in new miner training sessions. The example computer-based training package teaches new miners to read mine maps and provides opportunity to practice navigation skills in a virtual mine. With this 'serious game', trainees experience the look and feel of moving through an underground coal mine while in the safety of their classroom. During field-testing in 2007, trainees and instructors responded very favourably to this new way of learning. The software was usable by mine trainers with even limited computer expertise and could be installed on the affordable computers they were using for their more traditional slide presentations. The Underground Coal Mine Map Reading Training's foundation on past successful development strategies and its acceptance by today's instructors and trainees provide valuable lessons for developing training materials, strategies, and technologies for mining's future.

The Sago Mine Disaster, on January 2, 2006, placed renewed focus on several different aspects of safety in the underground coal mining industry. One area which received increased attention since Sago and other underground coal mining events is the concept of Safety Culture. This report describes the results of a pilot Safety Culture Assessment implemented at a small Appalachian underground coal mine, hereafter referred to as the Mine. The purposes of this pilot assessment were to (a) evaluate the feasibility and usefulness of a methodology for assessing safety culture that had previously been developed for use within other industries, (b) to initiate an investigation into the understanding and defining of the existing safety culture of the underground coal mining industry, and (c) provide meaningful and useful recommendations for the participating mine for their consideration in their ongoing quest to enhance their existing safety culture. This pilot assessment was conducted in July 2007. The report provides information regarding the presence or absence of safety culture characteristics within the Mine. Observations regarding the characteristics of the Mine?s safety culture that should be sustained are presented. Areas in need of attention and management focus to improve the Mine?s safety culture are presented as well as recommendations for moving forward. Safety culture characteristics that are important for the existence of a positive safety culture have been identified to include: - Safety is a clearly recognized value in the organization. - Accountability for safety in the organization is clear. - Safety is integrated into all activities in the organization. - A safety leadership process exists in the organization. - Safety culture is learning driven in the organization. - A process for establishing a strong and effective Safety Conscious Work Environment (SCWE) is in place. Performance objectives are associated with each of the safety culture characteristics and particular behaviors and attitudes have been identified that can be measured to evaluate these objectives. Using a methodology originally developed with the support of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an assessment of selected organizational behaviors and attitudes was conducted to evaluate the Mine in terms of these safety culture characteristics and their associated performance objectives. The methodology involves obtaining a variety of quantitative and qualitative information, using multiple data-gathering methods. The information collected is largely based upon the perceptions of the individuals in the organization. The evaluation is a ?point in time? snapshot of the Mine, but cultural beliefs and assumptions do not change quickly. The feasibility and usefulness of the methodology was successfully demonstrated during this pilot assessment. The Bureau of Mines reviewed available data on the effect of crushing high - sulfur coals for the liberation of impurities in the light of increasingly stringent air pollution regulations . The survey , which provided information on Appalachian region coals only , indicated that such important coalbeds as the Upper and Lower Freeport and the Upper Kittanning show significant sulfur reductions when crushed to 14 - mesh top size . For many other coalbeds amenability to sulfur liberation by crushing was indicated , although too few samples were available to draw firm conclusions .
