This report contains a summary of Phase I and complete results of Phase II portions of a study of geologic factors associated with roof falls in mines on the Pocahontas #3 coal seam in southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia. Principal objectives of Phase I was the selection of five mines that best portrayed the spectrum of roof and mining conditions and Phase II consisted of a measurement and documentation program for each of the five mines. The documentation measurement program included reconnaissance mapping, detailed mapping, joint measurements and coring roof rock. 1.2 PHASE I RESULTS The results of Phase I consisted of the selection of the following five mines for detailed study: Virginia Pocahontas #3 (Island Creek Coal Company), Bishop (Consolidation Coal Company), Shannon Branch (Allied Chemical Company), Keystone II (Eastern Associated Coal Company) and Macalpine-East Gulf (Westmorelenad Coal Company). In addition, Phase I results, which were based on questionnaire data, indicated that the kind of rock in the roof --gray sandstone, crystallized sandstone, laminated sandstone and shale, grey shale, slickensided shale, and rider seams could be associated with good and bad top areas. Also presence of vertical separations, bolt length, entry and cross-cut width, length and torque on bolts and depth of overburden seemed to be related factors. These data provided a focus for the Phase II measurement program.

"Investigations of the infrared spectra of crystalline and amorphous silica particles of different sizes (0.05, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, and 260 um) in the range of 400-4000 cm-1 using Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy we reported. The change in the intensity I of the signal with porosity e of powders follows the e/(1 - e) dependence for strong bands and e dependence for weaker bands as pre¬dicted by the theory of McGovern of al. For strong bands, I also follows the empirical relation I ~ D-n, where D Is the particle diameter in cm and n = 0.34-0.42. The anomalous positive frequency dependence of I on the modulation fre¬quency f observed for the stronger bands in the 45-pm and 260-pm particles Is believed to result from saturation. Some observations on the effect of changing the background from (carbon black) powder to pellet are also made.INTRODUCTIONSince the publication of the Rosencwaig—Gersho (RG) theory on the photoacoustic effect in solids (1, 2), Fourier transform infrared/photoacoustic spectroscopy (FTIR/PAS) has become an important technique for obtaining the IR spectra of surfaces and materials in their natural state (1-12). In the one-dimensional RG theory, the incident radiation, modulated at frequency f, is absorbed by the material to a depth pp = 1/B (B = absorption coefficient), thus setting up temperature variations in the material. These variations heat the adjacent gas/solid interface leading to the pressure fluctuations of the gas above the sample, which in turn is detected by microphone as a PA signal. The thermal wave originating from no deeper than the thermal diffusion length(2k/npcf) 1/2 in the material contributes to the PA signal (here k, p, and c are respectively the thermal conductivity, density, and specific heat of the material). Since u2, can be varied by varying the experimental parameter f, depth pro¬filing by PAS is possible and a number of papers on this subject have appeared in recent years (2-10). Another im¬portant phenomenon is saturation which occurs when the material thickness 1> u> us (1-12).The original promise of PAS for use with powder samples, without the need to ""prepare"" samples as in FTIR spectros-copy, has not yet been fully realized because of several com¬plications. Theoretical works by Monchalin et al. (13) and McGovern et al (14) showed that the interstial gas in the voids of the powders can act as amplifier and that, for the same mass, a finer powder is expected to yield higher PA signal than a coarser powder. Although in a number of earlier studies (15-21) an increase of PA signal with decreasing particle size has been observed, a quantitative check on the equations developed by McGovern et al. (14) has not yet been made. It is necessary to understand the particle size effects in PAS if the promise of PAS for IR spectroscopy of powders is to be realized. In this paper, we report results of a detailed study on the PAS of silica powders for the particle size range of 0.05-260 um and compare the results with theory (14). We have also investigated the frequency dependence of the variousIR modes in these powders and show that the saturation phenomenon affects at least some of the observations. Some observations on the effects of pellet vs powder background are also reported (22-24). Details of these findings are presented and discussed in this paper."

Climatic conditions are compared with roof fall occurrence from April 1, 1972, to December 31, 1975, by the Bureau of Mines. These comparisons indicate that humidity has a strong influence on roof fall occurrence rates. Cubic regression techniques are used to develop best fit curves. Statistical analysis of these curves indicate that both are sinusoidal and exhibit positive correlation with each other. The sine waves have a period of 1 year with maximum and minimum inflection points in August and February.

This Bureau of Mines report has been prepared to provide a means whereby mineworkers without specific geologic training can recognize and record the existence of potentially hazardous geologic features encountered in coal mines. Each geologic feature described in this report has been implicated in roof failure. Through the recording of the observations of mineworkers, based on this report, a geologic map of mine workings and the associated ground control problems can be compiled. From such maps, the trends of changes and features can be determined and projected ahead of mining. The face crew can be alerted to a potential problem and what to look for as the face is advanced.

This investigation was made to develop a method of preparing high - purity thorium metal in quantities up to 20 kilograms per batch . Several methods for the preparation , purification , and reduction of thorium tetrachloride are discussed . Thorium tetrachloride was prepared by chlorination of decomposed thorium nitrate or oxalate with carbon tetrachloride or phosgene . tion of the crude tetrachloride was achieved by multiple distillations or by filtration of the molten chloride . It was found that high - purity thorium metal could be prepared by sodium reduction of thorium tetrachloride if chloride of sufficient purity were available . Byproduct salts and excess reductant were removed by vacuum distillation , and the resultant thorium metal sponge was consolidated by consumable - electrode or fixed - electrode arc melting . It was demonstrated that metal prepared by this method could be fabricated into bar , rod , or sheet , at room temperature .

"In the course of another investigation4 during 1926 and 1927, samples of water collected from a few abandoned coal mines indicated that their drainage was usually lower in acidity than water from active mines in the same locality. In order to determine whether this condition might have a bearing on the advisability of sealing abandoned mines, a number of such mines were visited, samples of drainage were collected, and as much information- as possible was obtained from officials of the mining companies and older residents of the district. Sayers of the Bureau of Mines, under whose direction the work was conducted.The Lower Kittanning is the most important bed in the locality studied. A great many of the abandoned mines examined are in this bed, and nearly all of the present active ones are. The Upper Freeport bed is also mined to some extent, and a number of the abandoned mines formerly worked this bed. As only three active mines are now (1927) working the Upper Freeport, the comparison of acidities is necessarily limited. Of these three, one had been idle since 1922 until shortly before it was sampled.The location of most of the mines was already known from previous work, but some of them had to be located by following up streams known to contain acid waters. A sample of the- outflow was collected in self-sealing bottles known as ""citrate bottles"" for the determination of dissolved oxygen by the Winkler method.5 Another sample was taken for the determination of acidity according to standard methods of water analysis.6 Ferrous iron was determined at the mine or very soon after taking the sample by titrating with a standard solution of potassium permanganate in acid solution. The hydrogen-ion value was determined by a standard double-wedge comparator.7From the total acidity values in each sample, which are the most important values, the total iron was calculated on the assumption that acidity as sulphuric acid was due to dissolved ferrous sulphate. This assumption is commonly made for mine waters, but is inaccurate to the extent that free acid is already present, and some of the iron is present as ferric, rather than ferrous, sulphate. The amount of ferrous sulphate may be a rough measure of the extent to which oxygen is lacking within the mine. The permanganate titrations just mentioned showed what part of this total iron was in combination as ferrous sulphate, and the difference .was assumed to be that in combination as ferric sulphate, after correcting for the amount of free acid already formed as shown by the titration values."

A family of modified-sulfur cements has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for the preparation of construction materials with improved properties. Various types of sulfur cements were prepared by reacting sulfur with mixtures of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) and oligomers of cyclopentadiene (CPD). Durable cements were prepared with structural characteristics ranging from rigid to flexible. These cements were used to prepare corrosion-resistant materials for use in a wide variety of industrial applications where resistance to acidic and salt conditions is needed. These materials were prepared as rigid concretes, flexible pavings, spray coatings, and grouts. Production of modified-sulfur cements in a commercial-size plant was demonstrated.

"INTRODUCTION The augmented demands for natural gas in many parts of the United States as a result of war have increased the need for information regarding the producing characteristics of natural-gas and gas-condensate-type wells capable of delivering large volumes of gas, as such information is important to the formulation of conservative and efficient operative and recovery practices.,For many years, the capacity of natural-gas wells to produce gas has received studied consideration by Bureau of Mines' engineers, and three reports 3/ on gaging gas-well capacities have been published. In Report of Investigations 2929, Pierce and Rawlins point out that for accurate gaging, the actual pressures at the face of the sand in the well and the relationship between such pressures and the rates of flow of gas through the sand must be determined. Ultimately, the most important product of a hearing conservation program is the prevention of hearing loss, not the amount of hearing protection that has been purchased or whether employees are attending their annual training sessions. Audiometric testing directly reveals whether hearing losses are actually occurring in a plant. With audiometric data, we can assess overall program effectiveness, alert workers of impending hearing loss, and reveal potential employer liabilities for compensable hearing loss. Without the ability to efficiently analyze audiometric data or produce effective reports, our programs become fruitless and unproductive. Consequently, ifaudiometric data are such vital end-products, then effective audiometric technologies serve as the prime architect and generator of these fundamental data. These technologies, consisting ofaudiometers, associated peripheral hardware, and database/reporting software, deserve our consideration.

The Bureau of Mines has recently conducted a study of results obtained in analyzing similar samples of coal and coke by 25 laboratories throughout then country, in comparison with results obtained in the Bureau's coal laboratory at Pittsburgh. The purpose of this work was primarily to obtain a comparison of the methods of coal analysis used by the laboratories of the American Gas Association. Therefore, four standard samples of coal end one of coke ware prepared in the Bureau of Mines coal laboratory at Pittsburgh, and portions sent to each laboratory. At the same time, a like number of standard samples were submitted to 12 commercial laboratories rot affiliated with the Association, for the purpose of comparing their analyses with the results is obtained by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the American Gas Association. Tire comparison is based on the average of 24 analyses by the Bureau of Mines on each kind of coal, and the accompanying curves show the deviation from this average analysis, together with deviations from the check limits of the American Society for Testing Materials.

Abstract-Underground mines are typically extensive labyrinths that employ many people working over an area of many square miles; exten¬sive analysis of mine-communications systems has identified specific problem areas, in particular the excessive times required to locate key personnel underground, the inadequacy of existing phone systems in terms of capacity and privacy, and the inability to communicate with men on the move with wireless communications, as is taken for granted on the surface. A review is presented of the existing systems, the prob¬lem definition, and the various approaches that have been or are being investigated to solve these problems. The mineral industry of Bangladesh was totally dominated by natural gas production and its downstream uses. A small amount of cement was produced, and clays were used locally for ceramics and construction materials. Nitrogenous fertilizer was produced from natural gas and a modest, scrap-based steel industry produced steel for local consumption. The country has been developing and using its abundant and inexpensive gas reserves as fast as practical. The population, however, was predominantly dependent on agriculture for its livelihood. The industrial sector accounted for 10% of the economy, and most of the industrial output was directly associated with agricultural products jute, tobacco, and textiles. Industrial expansion, even with the availability of gas, was severely constrained because of limited domestic demand, lack of skilled work force and management, poor infrastructure, and a low rate of domestic savings. To put greater emphasis on the industrial sector, the Government established a National Committee for Industrial Development in July. The Committee instituted policy reforms in the areas of trade and investment. One important step was to move from a positive import list to a negative list, thereby permitting imports of items not restricted or banned. The system for recovering and approving new domestic or foreign industrial investments was streamlined to expedite what had become a cumbersome, bureaucratic exercise. To encourage industrial development in areas away from the crowded urban centers, several economic incentives reportedly were adopted. These included a reduced tax rate on imported machinery, exemption of import license fees, a reasonable debt equity rate, and a 9-year income tax exemption period.2 In the trade sector, imports increased 12% in fiscal year (FY) 19843 mainly

"INTRODUCTION In previous reports 5 results were given of a manhole investigation carried out over a period from June 1929 to July 193C in cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston. Mass., and during 1931 in cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co., to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. and to develop methods of eliminating these hazards. These investigations have demonstrated that the detection, control, and elimination of combustible hazards in manholes can best be obtained by a close cooperation of the interested parties through a systematic and continuous inspection of manholes, under proper supervision.The investigation carried out during 1932 has been along lines similar to those conducted during 1929, 1930, and 1931 test crew consisting of two men, one an employee of the Consolidated Gas Co. and the other an employee of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., was continuously employed during the year in the testing of gases in manholes served by the Edison system. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the special service department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin, vice president of the Consolidated Gas Co.As in the previous investigations, all tests were numbered. The test-data sheets, on which the information regarding the tests was recorded, were prepared in triplicate, ono copy going to the Edison Co., one to the gas company, and the third to the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh, Pa. These test-data sheets were then filed (1) according to the town, (2) the street location, and (3) the manhole number; in this way a complete record of each manhole tested was immediately available. A typical test-data sheet was given in the 1931 report. These data sheets were found to entirely satisfactory and no changes were made during the 1932 investigation. The procedure of sampling manhole atmospheres, shipment of the samples to Pittsburgh, and method of analysis has been the same as that described in the 1931 report and need not be repeated here. Likewise, there has been no change in the method of calculation of explosibility of the samples analyzed or the use of charcoal filter tests given in appendix A."

"SUMMARYThe Ringelmann Smoke Chart fulfills an important need in smoke abatement work and certain problems in the combustion of fuels. A knowledge of its history and method of preparation is, therefore, of interest to many. Since instructions on its use are not shown on the recent edition of the chart, those included in this revision of the previous information circular, by Rudolf Kudlich, now are a necessary complement to the chart. More detail regarding the use of the chart is included than was given in the earlier manuscript.INTRODUCTIONThe Ringelmann Smoke Chart, giving shades of gray by which the density of columns of smoke rising from stacks may be compared, was developed by a Professor Ringelmann of Paris. Maximilian Ringelmann, born in 1861, was professor of agricultural engineering at l'Institute National Agronomique and Director de la Station d'Essais de Machines in Paris in 1888, and held those positions for many years thereafter.The chart apparently was introduced into the United States by William Kent in an article published in ""Engineering News"" of November 11, 1897, with a comment that he had learned of it in a private communication from a Bryan Donkin of London. It was said to have come into somewhat extensive use in Europe by that time. Kent proposed in 1899 that it be accepted as the standard measure of smoke density in the standard code for power-plant testing that was being formulated by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.The Ringelmann Chart was used by the engineers of the Technologic Branch of the Federal Geological Survey (which later formed the nucleus of the present Bureau of Mines) in their studies of smokeless combustion beginning at St. Louis in 1904, and by 1910 had been recognized officially in the smoke ordinance for Boston passed by the Massachusetts Legislature."

The Bureau of Mines hydrogenated coals of different rank that had been irradiated with either x-rays or gamma rays. Lignite, high-volatile A and C bituminous, and low-volatile bituminous coals were exposed to l billion roent¬gens of gamma-ray radiation; specimens of high-volatile A and C bituminous coals from other sources received 6 million roentgens of X-ray radiation. Irradiated and unirradiated control specimens of those coals were hydrogenated in autoclave experiments at (6,000-p.s.i. final pressure and 400° C. with retention times of 15, 30, or 60 minutes depending on the coal rank and catalytic treatment. Comparison of results from irradiated specimens with those from the control experiments showed that the radiation had no beneficial effect on the coal. High-volatile C bituminous coal may have been affected by radiation more than the other coals. One billion roentgens appeared to reduce the amount of coal converted to liquids and gases by about 10 pct., and 6 million roentgens reduced it by about 6 pct. then catalyzed with tin. In all other cases, the conversion of irradiated coal was either reduced by as much as 4 pct. or was essentially the sank as that obtained with unirradiated coal. Irradiation during hydrogenation nay be effective for increasing the reactivity of coal and should be investigated; further work with coals irradiated prier to hydrogenation is not recommended.

This volume summarizes the contract work performed over a nine-month period by Westinghouse Electric Corporation on a Cost Plus Fixed Fee Contract for the Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines. The contract has been extended primarily to carry out improvements recommended for equipment produced under the contract for communicating with and locating trapped miners. These improvements will enhance the performance and utility of this equipment for operational use in actual mine emergencies. An additional complete set of the equipment will also he furnished to the Bureau under this extension. The work of the basic contract was to design, produce and test hardware in accordance with the Westinghouse response to a Bureau of Mines Request for Proposal which was based technically on recommendations of a study performed for the Bureau by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Accelerometers of various types, velocity gages, and a displacement meter are shown to give reliable date when measuring seismic pulses generated in rock by the detonation of explosive charges. Displacement and velocity records are differentiated and shown to compare with velocity and acceleration records. Velocity and acceleration records are integrated and shown to compare with displacement and velocity records, respectively. The experimental data are shown to satisfy the scaling laws developed by dimensional analysis. Propagation laws are developed for peak amplitudes of the first pulse of displacement, velocity, and acceleration. These propagation laws are shown to be independent of the gage used to obtain the data. As a result, the usefulness of the various gage types can be extended. For example, accelerometers, because of their high frequency and amplitude limits, can be employed near the shot to measure acceleration and/or velocity (by integration), Velocity gages, because of their higher sensitivity, can be employed at relatively larger distances from the shot to measure velocity and displacement or acceleration (by integration or differentiation).

The Bureau of Mines investigated palygorskite, a natural asbestiform material, to accumulate knowledge that might serve as a foundation for future synthesis of a similar material. Unit cell, chemical analysis, DTA, TGA, optical constants, and electron microscopy data were obtained. Selected palygorskite samples of bettor than 97-percent purity were used to obtain this information. Chemical analysis revealed the following formula: (OH2)4 (OH)2 Ca0.01Fe0.02K0 .c3Mg2.10A12.00Si7.93020.3.91 H2O. The optical constants for sodium light are a = 1.522; S = 1.530; ?=1.533; biaxially (-). The following orthorhomibic unit cell constants were determined: ao = 12.690 A, Z = 2, bo = 17.857 A, Dx = 2.327. co = 5.207 A, Identical diffraction patterns resulted from the three palygorskite samples that were studied. X-ray, chemical, DTA, TGA, and optical data were compared with literature values for similar fibrous materials. X-ray diffraction lines were indexed. Several electron micrographs were made to compare the structures of palygorskite and attapulgite with that of chrysotile. The micrographs revealed extremely short laths for attapulgite, very long flexible laths for palygorskite, and tubular structure for chrysotile.

This paper deals with truck haulage methods and costs at one of the many open-cut mines that are replacing rail haulage with heavy-duty trucks. At this mine, ore is trucked to a crushing plant, centrally located within one of the open-cuts. The requirements for efficient low-cost truck haulage are: Good trucks designed for heavy loads, adequate truck maintenance, smooth roads, and well-trained truck drivers The weighted average cost of hauling a long ton of ore to the crusher and the waste to the dump was reduced from $0.1993 in 1948 to $0.1114 during the last half of 1949, his corresponds to a cost per ton mile of $0.0864.
