Bureau of Mines research was conducted to develop effective separation methods that might be used in exploiting substantial tonnages of complex barite-fluorspar ores in Arizona. The exploitable reserves now may be increased as recent batch and continuous flotation tests demonstrated that a complex barite?-fluorspar ore from the Red Chief deposit, Yuma County, Ariz., could be selectively treated to concurrently produce (1) fluorspar and (2) a barite byproduct of marketable grade. The sample contained 24.8 percent CaF2 and 24.3 percent BaS04. Processing comprised production of a fluorspar product containing 97 percent CaF2 with an 82 percent recovery, using a sodium fluoride-lignin sulfonate-fatty acid reagent combination. Concurrent retreatment of the fluorspar tailing, using sodium cetyl sulfate as a collector, yielded a barite product of 94 percent BaS04 grade with a 71-percent recovery. The products met specifications for acid-grade fluorspar and drilling mud-type barite.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the recovery of alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources, including anorthosite. The United States has large reserves of anorthosite, but its aluminum content is less than 50 pct soluble in acid, unless a source of fluoride is added to the acid. A flowsheet that includes leaching with HCl and fluoride followed by crystallization of AlC13.6H20 from the pregnant liquor by HCl gas injection was designed. Approximately 90 pct of the aluminum values were recovered from the anorthosite when a ratio of 0.14 mole of fluorine per mole of aluminum was used. Sodium chloride is cocrystallized with the A1C13.6H20 but is removed by water washing of the Al203 product. A material balance is given based on results of laboratory studies of the unit operations.

Interim performance specifications are presented for carbon monoxide, methane, and air velocity transducers used in the Bureau of Mines intrinsically safe mine monitoring system. These specifications give quantitative values or qualitative descriptions of the transducers, including environmental parameters and monitoring system measurement and maintenance requirements as recommended by the Bureau of Mines. Commercially available transducer modules and prototype modules are listed together with selected characteristics.

This paper describes the Bureau of Mines development of a novel subsidence prediction methodology suitable to the mining and geologic conditions in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. It describes the computation of vertical and horizontal movements, inclination, curvature, and horizontal strains. The substance of this method is the separation of the effects of lithology by introducing a correlation between hypothetically homogeneous overburden and existing lithologic conditions, while providing for different mining conditions, i.e., underground geometry and overburden thickness. The effects of lithology have been expressed in the form of a variable subsidence coefficient within the subsidence trough. The subsidence co-efficient is considered a constant for other predictive methods. Field data from 16 test sites at 11 Bureau longwall panel studies were used in the analysis. For each panel, the characteristics of the variability of the subsidence coefficient were defined. Regression analysis of the subsidence coefficients from all test sites on their locations relative to the edges of their respective panels yielded a third-degree polynomial equation. The results from additional longwall panel studies, not included in the regression analysis, were used to prove the validity of this method. To facilitate the use of this precalculatlon methodology, a computer program was written in BASIC for use on a personal computer.

The Bureau of Mines used a diphenyl ether calorimeter to determine the heat contents of natural and synthetic blast-furnace slags. For solid slags, enthalpy (HT-H298) at 1,448° to 1,680° K ranged from 282.1 to 348.5 cal/g (±3 percent); liquid slag values were 400.1 to 514 cal/g (±3 percent) in the temperature range between 1,626° and 1,890° K. Experimental results for liquid slags were 14.3 to 16.2 percent higher than the enthalpies calculated from thermodynamic tables; values for solid slags ranged from 5.3 percent lower to 3.9 percent higher than calculated values. Experimental results for liquid synthetic slags ranged from 14.9 to 24.3 percent higher than the calculated enthalpies; values for solid synthetic slags were from 1.0 to 3.4 percent higher.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on Fe-based alloys using Si and Al additions to reduce the Cr required for heat-resisting appli-cations. Part of this research is being done to evaluate alloys containing (8-10)Cr-(10-14)Ni-(0-8.5)Si-(0-4) Al to determine which of these alloys have austenitic structures, as well as fabrication properties and oxidation resistance sufficient to substitute for type 304 stainless steel. Based on initial results, an Fe-lOCr-11Ni-5Si alloy and an Fe-8Cr-13Ni-5Si alloy were selected for evaluation of oxidati.on, stress rupture, and tensile properties. Both alloys have oxidation resistance at 7000 and 8000 C that is better than that of type 304 stainless steel. The stress rupture strengths are less than that of type 304 stainless steel but significantly better than that of commercial heat-resisting steels with similar Cr contents. Yield strengths of the alloys were equivalent to that of type 304. Both alloys had high tensile strengths comparable to those of stainless steels that transform to martensite during straining (e.g., type 301). These alloys have weld-hot-cracking resistance comparable to that of type 304 stainless steel. This initial study shows that Si has potential as a substitute for Cr in stainless steels for heat-resisting applications.

This is a progress report of an investigation by personnel of the Bureau of Mines from June to September 1951 to introduce preservative chemicals into growing timber. It also describes in detail the impregnation process, known as the collar method, developed by the United States Department of Agriculture2/ Twenty-eight trees were treated by this method, and a complete record was kept of each individual tree and of each timber cut from it. These timbers have been placed in a coal mine, and their tendency to decay is compared to that of adjacent untreated sets. Although several years will be required before final conclusions can be drawn, this report explains the appearance and encouraging results of the treated timber to date. Also included are some comparative costs of untreated timber, treated timber by the commercial pressure method, and treated timber by the collar method. INTRODUCTION In the hope of increasing the useful life of cut timber, experiments to impregnate growing trees with wood-preservative chemicals by utilizing the natural flow of sap have been carried on for centuries. None of the various methods used in these experiments has ever gained any widespread use because they have been commercially impractical.

The adverse effects on waterflooding and well-completion methods of clay minerals indigenous to petroleum-production formations recently have received considerable attention. Knowledge of the types and amounts of clay minerals present would allow estimates of the response of such formations to injected or infiltrated water; however, the random distribution of clays in sedimentary formations makes direct evaluation of ?water sensitivity? desirable. A method for the direct evaluation of water sensitivity has been developed, based on measurement of water-vapor adsorption. Correlation of such data with the results of nitrogen-adsorption measurements provides valuable information on the content and properties of clay minerals in sedimentary rocks. The method is relatively simple and has the advantage that it may be used with small, irregularly shaped chips or shale-streaked samples, as well as with typical core samples. Methods previously employed required separating the clay from the rest of the reservoir-sample material and then performing a clay analysis either by X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, liquid permeability, or a combination of these methods (2,3) .3/ This water-vapor-adsorption method requires measuring only a few points on the isotherm to tell whether or not the sample is water sensitive. The goal of these measurements is not to determine the type or amount of clay present, but what will be its sensitivity to flood water. This method gives a direct means of solving this problem.

In the course of a study of domestic Manganese resources, 2-ton representative samples of ore were taken by Bureau of Mines' engineers from the Payday claim, Weber County, and the Newcomb-claims, Rich County, Utah. The Payday No. 1 deposit is situated 13 miles northeast of Huntsville, Weber County, Utah. The manganese ore is a. replacement deposit in limestone and consists of manganese oxides imbedded 'in clay and also as the cementing agent consolidating small pebbles and pieces of quartz and limestone.

In the Bureau of Mines study, a filter with a 20-by 20-inch-square cross section was inserted into the exhaust ducting of a 4-stroke-cycle, 90-hp diesel engine, and the efficiency of removal of total particulate was measured gravimetrically as a function of time. Removal efficiencies were close to 90 pct during the main portion of several extended runs employing several combinations of filter beds. Variations in engine load had little effect on collection efficiency. Particle size as measured by a Bureau-developed online instrument centered on 0.07 m based on number count. Removal efficiency increased rather sharply for both larger and smaller particles.

To meet an increasing demand for high-purity cobalt, the Bureau of Mines has conducted investigations for producing this metal. Cobalt having a purity of 99.95 percent or higher is needed to determine heats of formation, corrosion resistances, phase diagrams, and other basic properties of the element and its compounds. This grade of cobalt may be used for preparing radioactive metal. As a result of its investigations a detailed procedure, which is of practical significance to the production of high-purity cobalt, has been developed by the Bureau for purifying cobalt solutions and for electrolytic deposition of the metal. Cobalt metal, which had a purity of 99.99 percent with reference to metallic contaminations, was deposited electrolytically. Qualitative spectrographic analysis showed only traces of calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, nickel, and zinc.

PURPOSE This report provides an integrative review of 52 recently published research reports that examine the associations between long working hours and illnesses, injuries, health behaviors, and performance. The report is restricted to a description of the findings and methods and is not intended as an exhaustive discussion of all important issues related to long working hours. Findings and methods are summarized as reported by the original authors, and the study methods are not critically evaluated for quality. SUMMARY In 16 of 22 studies addressing general health effects, overtime was associated with poorer perceived general health, increased injury rates, more illnesses, or increased mortality. One meta-analysis of long work hours suggested a possible weak relationship with preterm birth. Overtime was associated with unhealthy weight gain in two studies, increased alcohol use in two of three studies, increased smoking in one of two studies, and poorer neuropsychological test performance in one study. Some reports did not support this trend, finding no relationship between long work hours and leisure-time physical activity (two of three studies) and no relationship with drug abuse (one study). A pattern of deteriorating performance on psycho physiological tests as well as injuries while working long hours was observed across study findings, particularly with very long shifts and when 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work a week. Four studies that focused on effects during extended shifts reported that the9thto 12th hours of work were associated with feelings of decreased alertness and increased fatigue, lower cognitive function, declines in vigilance on task measures, and increased injuries. Two studies examining physicians who worked very long shifts reported deterioration on various measures of cognitive performance. When 12-hour shifts combined with other work-related demands, a pattern of more adverse findings was detected across studies. Six studies examining 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work per week reported increases in health complaints, deterioration in performance, or slower pace of work. Two studies com-paring 8- and 12-hour schedules during day and night shifts reported that 12-hour night shifts were associated with more physical fatigue, smoking, or alcohol use. Two studies examining start times for 12-hour shifts reported that decrements in alertness or more health complaints were associated with early 6:00 a.m. start times. One study examining 12-hour shifts in hot work environments reported a slower pace of work as compared with shorter shifts. Another study examining high workloads during 12-hour shifts showed increased discomfort and deterioration in performance as compared with shorter shifts. More definitive statements about differences between 8-hour and 12-hour shifts are difficult because of the inconsistencies in the types of work schedules examined across studies. Work schedules differed by the time of day (i.e., day, evening, night), fixed versus rotating schedules, speed of rotation, direction of rotation, number of hours worked per week, number of consecutive days worked, number of rest days, and number of weekends off. All of these factors could have interacted with overtime and influenced study results. The direct dissolution of a typical zinc sulfide flotation concentrate by elevated temperature and pressure leaching was investigated. The concentrate assayed about 55 percent Zn, 32 percent S, 6 percent Fe, and 1 percent Pb and contained minor quantities of copper and precious metals. The influence of various factors on the dissolution of the zinc in acidic and ammoniacal pulps when using oxygen as the oxidant was determined. The tests revealed that the sphalerite was difficult to oxidize. Complete dissolution of the mineral required vigorous and intimate nixing of the gaseous, liquid, and sold phases. The addition of pyrite or sulfuric acid to water slurries of the concentrate was required to obtain a high zinc extraction when leaching under acidic conditions. The quantity of pyrite and acid used was about 0.125 and 0.25 pound, respectively, per pound of zinc sulfide contained in the leach charge. In tests with acid, about 96 percent of the zinc was extracted from the concentrate in 1 hour at 200° C. when the oxygen partial pressure was 75 pounds per square inch gage or higher. Leaching with a continuous flow of air as the oxidant gave results that were almost as good as those obtained when oxygen was used, In tests with air fed through the autoclave at 320 liters per hour, 95 percent of the zinc was dissolved in 1 hour, Acid leach solutions assaying approximately 58 grams Zn per liter and containing Fe, Ni, Cr, and Cu impurities were produced in the better tests. The leached residue consisted essentially of red iron oxide together with substantially all of the lead and precious metals.

The use of fire as a source of heat was the first step from primitive existence toward modern civilization, and heat has performed functions of inestimable importance throughout the ensuing ages. The first commercial steam engine invented in 1698 demonstrated that heat was an important source of power, and heat has since become the motivating force for railroad trains and steamboats as well as for machines in multitudes of factories. Aside from its function of supplying power, heat is an agent of vast importance in chemical reactions and engineering processes. Because of the high temperature of steam under pressure, losses by radiation from boilers and pipes become excessive unless the radiating surfaces are covered with insulating materials. When the criterion for control of scale prevention on the evaporating surfaces is made the conditions in the concentrated boiler water, then this control becomes an exact operation amenable to an accuracy commensurate with all other operations in the boiler room. The responsibility in boiler water conditioning, however, includes more than clean surfaces. Corrosion in feed lines, economizers and the boiler is a function of the condition of the later, and must be controlled. Steam line and turbine blading deposits must be obviated by the system of conditioning. By the chemical treatment employed, the amount and character of noncondensable uses in the steam must be controlled in accordance with the intended use of the steam. All. in all, the responsibility in boiler crater conditioning ends not with the entrance of the water into the boiler but with the passage from the boiler nozzle of steam, the dryness and rarity of which are defined by the uses to be made thereof. A clearer conception of the scope of boiler water conditioning can be obtained by reference to a diagram of the surfaces (Figure 1) at which it functions. Consideration of this diagram leads to the following outline for the problems of boiler water conditioning: (a) Prevention of scale formation on surfaces (1) In contact with water but at which no evaporation occurs. (2) At which evaporation is occurring.

The Bureau of Mines made small-scale continuous tests and large-scale commercial plant tests of a calcareous fluorspar ore near Cave-In-Rock, Ill., to determine if the application of the lignin-fluoride process of fluorspar flotation would be industrially feasible for treatment of fluorspar ores, and also to compare the lignin-fluoride process with the quebracho process, which is the method currently used for concentrating calcareous fluorspar ores. The small-scale continuous tests yielded fluorspar concentrates analyzing 93.6 percent CaF2 with a recovery of 87.6 percent of the total fluorspar in the ore. In large-scale commercial plant tests, a fluorspar concentrate analyzing 93.3 percent CaF2 with a recovery of 78.0 percent was produced by the quebracho method. About 86.0 percent of the fluorspar was recovered in a metallurgical-grade fluorspar concentrate from the lignin-fluoride circuit which analyzed 89.9 percent CaF2? with a much simpler flowsheet than that in the current commercial application.

"The use of such methods and apparatus as the Dautriche method and the Mettegang recorder for the determination of the rate of burning of black blasting powder and other strictly burning explosives has been found to give such erratic results that no reliance can be placed on the data thus obtained. Consequently, investigators of those factors which may affect the burning rate, such as size of grain, absolute density, chemical composition, and means of ignition have had to rely mainly on observations made during practical use for determination of the part played by each. Such tests are very difficult of interpretation.The purpose of this paper is to describe a method used by the explosives division of the Bureau of Mines for the investigation of such explosives and to present the results of an investigation using that method.The investigation was concerned with the effect of grain size, initial pressure, and means of ignition on the rate of burning or rate of pressure development of black blasting powder as compared with pellet powder.The Bichel pressure gauge was used for these tests, with the slight modification to the apparatus and method described in U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 15.4 These modifications consisted of reducing the speed of the revolving drum on which the time-pressure record is taken, measuring the speed of the drum by a belt-driven tachometer, and introducing an induction coil in series with the electric squib or electric detonator to mark on the time pressure record the instant at which the squib or detonator was fired."

This Bureau of Mines report evaluates audio dosimeters, 3 sample units from each of 10 currently marketed brands. Each dosimeter was treated as a "black box" with the acoustic stimulus as the input and the accumulated dosage as the output. The dosimeter microphones were exposed to a sound field gener¬ated in an anechoic chamber. Characteristics evaluated include frequency response (100 to 8,000 Hz), level-time trade-off rate (88 to 117 db), status of calibration, crest-handling capability, and power consumption rate. Experi¬mental errors revealed by replication of the tests were found to be generally much smaller than variations in performance among the samples of any brand, and possibilities of further reducing the magnitude of these errors are discussed.

Two methods were tested for separating sulfur compounds in certain petroleum fractions into types . Such separation is preliminary to identifying the compounds . Each method involved extraction of sulfides from petroleum sulfur concentrates . In the first method , the sulfur concentrate was reacted with methyl - ptoluenesulfonate to form sulfonium compounds from which unreacted portions of the sample were removed by washing with solvent . The sulfides then were recovered by heating the sulfonium compounds with anhydrous triethanolamine . The second method consisted of passing anhydrous hydrogen iodide into a n-butane solution of the sample cooled in dry ice , whereupon the hydrogen iodide adducted with the sulfides to form sulfonium compounds . These adducts separated as crystalline solids or , more frequently , as glassy viscous liquids . The sulfide was regenerated by adding water to the filtered sulfonium compound and was recovered by steam distillation or by extraction with pentane . These methods have been evaluated , using individual pure sulfur compounds and blends of sulfur compounds . They also have been applied successfully to separating sulfides from sulfur concentrates derived from petroleum fractions .

Through a contract, the Bureau of Mines has funded the development of an Automated Breathing Metabolic Simulator (ABMS). The ABMS simulates man in all of the breathing and metabolic parameters for monitoring support and resuscitation equipment. For the first time, complete breathing and metabolic simulation are incorporated in the same device. Breathing rate, breathing depth, breath velocity contour, oxygen uptake, and carbon dioxide release are all variable over wide ranges, simulating conditions from sleep to hard work with respiratory exchange ratios covering the range of hypoventilation to hyperventilation. In addition, all of these parameters are remotely controlled to facilitate the use of the device in hostile test environments. The exhaled breath is also at body temperature and completely saturated. The simulation in faith¬ful to the extent of having a variable functional residual capacity and an anatomical dead space equivalent to that of humans. The ABMS will be used as a stand-in for humans in test and validation of respiratory equipment, permitting more extensive and safer evaluation in hazardous environments where human testing would have to be limited. In addition, it will greatly reduce the cost of prolonged testing in cases where simulation chambers with human subjects require three shifts of crews, including standby physicians. Perhaps most importantly, it will provide a calculated and reproducible test and validation facility. The ABMS is under complete computer control. Through a typewriter terminal the test sequence can be input into the computer which will then automatically adjust the ABMS to simulate any desired sequence of metabolic activities for time durations up to 15 hours. The computer also monitors the test procedures and provides test results printout.
