The electrical resistivity the coefficient of electrical resistivity the Hall coefficient, and the absolute thermoelectric power were determined in this Bureau of Mines investigation for nine compositions of the TiB2-CrB2 sub-system. The numerical values of the electrical resistivity and the thermo-electric power were greater for the intermediate compositions than for the end members. The absolute values of the Hall coefficients and the coefficients of electrical resistivity were less for the intermediate compositions than for the end members. The electrical resistivities and Hall coefficients were about the order of magnitude of most metals--from 34 to 202 microhm-cm and from about 0 to -23.3 X 10-4 cuP/coulomb. The thermoelectric power was somewhat greater than that of most metals--up to 15.6 microvolts per 0 C.

"Longwall mining is generally recognized as safer, more productive and economic when compared to room and pillar underground coal mining. There has been, however, increasing concern for the control of airborne coal dust concentrations in long wall faces. The airborne dust cloud at a longwall face is a complex aerosol system containing particles of varied size, density, shape and state of aggregation. For the development of more effective dust control practices in longwall faces, it is necessary to understand more clearly the characteristics of the longwall dust cloud.In this paper, results of a research study on dust concentration distributions along longwall faces are presented. The objective of this study is to characterize the longwall dust cloud behaviour and provide necessary fundamental data for a better understanding of the longwall dust problem. MSA personal samplers and gravimetric total dust samplers were employed to collect respirable and total airborne dust samples. The size distribution of these samples was determined by MicroTrac SPA. The instantaneous respirable airborne dust concentrations were recorded using RAM-I. The dust concentrations are related to face operations, particularly the shearer location and activities. The size distribution of airborne dust, instantaneous respirable airborne dust concentration, and air quantity distributions along longw all faces reveal a complex dust flow phenomenon. Additional fundamental studies are needed for characterizing the temporal and spatial behaviour of the dust cloud at longwall faces.IntroductionModern mechanized longwall mining was introduced in the United States in the 1960's and has become more common in the last twenty years. United States longwalls are multiple-entry retreating faces. According to a recent survey, 91 of the 102 longwall faces employ double-drum shearers (1). Several recently installed longwall faces have consistently produced over 4 000 to 5 000 tons per shift over extended periods of operation. The trend in under-ground coal mining in the U.S. certainly is toward the introduction of longwalls. This trend is true not only for new mines but also for renovation of existing mines. While longwall mining has many advantages over other mining methods, including improved safety, such as higher pro-duction. greater productivity and enhanced reserve recov-ery, it is associated with severe problems of dust control. The increase in longwall production has been accompanied by an increase in respirable dust problems which limit realizing the full potential of the longwall mining system. Despite the efforts to develop improved equipment and operational procedures to control the dust levels at longwall faces, it is still difficult to bring several double-drum shearer operations into compliance with the Federal stand¬ards of 2,0 mg/m 3 respirable dust without loss of produc¬tion. In fiscal year 1987, fifty-eight of the longwall sections were found to be in non-compliance once, and an additional 31 were cited two or more times'''. If the full potential of the longwall mining method is to be realized, new measures must be implemented to control the dust concentration to mandated levels. There is a need for detailed and extensive sampling of longwall faces to understand the dust source-sink relationships and the transient ambient concentrations. These must be related to the mining activities on the face. This paper is to characterize the longwall dust cloud behavior through a series of experiments in operating faces and provide necessary fundamental data for further studies to develop improved dust control practices."

A commercially available Halon 1301 extinguisher has been evaluated as part of an explosion-suppression system for use in coal mines. Studies were made both of the dispersion pattern of the Halon 1301 at an initial pressure of 280 psig, and of the efficacy of this suppressant against 9.5 percent methane-air flames. These flames were quenched successfully only when the suppressant was applied before the fireball diameter exceeded 18 inches.

Laboratory research has demonstrated that high - grade copper powders can be produced under controlled conditions from cement copper products . The technique should enable small producers to prepare a directly marketable product by means other than smelting and electrolytic purification . A continuous drum- type precipitator was the preferred unit for producing fine - sized particles of cement copper that were further processed by chemical digestion in a copper sulfate solution , by reduction and sintering in a hydrogen atmosphere , and by grinding to a powder . The effects of variables related to all stages of the process were investigated . Treatment of leach solutions from three different sources resulted in copper powders containing 99.2 to 99.8 pct Cu , apparent densities of 1.97 to 2.25 grams per cu cm , good powder flow rates , and a size distribution of 54.9 to 60.1 pct minus 325 - mesh material .

Heat capacity measurements of akermanite ( Ca,MgSiO ) , cordierite (Mg2A14 Sig018 ) , gehlenite ( Ca₂Al₂ SiO ) , and merwinite ( Ca ,MgSiO ) were conducted over the temperature range from 50 ° to 298.15 ° K. The entropies at 298.15 K ( expressed in cal / deg mole ) were evaluated as follows : Akermanite , 50.0 ± 0.5 ; cordierite , 97.3 ± 0.9 ; gehlenite , 47.4 ± 0.4 ; and merwinite , 60.5 ± 0.5 . All four compounds have positive entropies of formation from their constituent oxides at 298.15 ° K ; the values range from 4.6 cal /deg mole for akermanite to 10.1 cal / deg mole for cordierite .

Information is presented dealing with forming, forging, and machining, welding and assembly techniques, and design changes relative to this prototype. INTRODUCTION The work of the Federal Bureau of Mines in making ductile titanium available2/ has resulted in the establishment of a new industry. Owing to its strategic importance and the combination of low density and high strength, titanium has received considerable attention as a structural metal. Titanium's favorable strength-to-weight ratio is of particular importance to the Army Ordnance for equipment that is transported by airplane or by foot soldiers.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines research was to determine the technical feasibility of direct sulfuric acid digestion of Florida land-pebble phosphate matrix. Preliminary tests in a continuous digestion circuit showed that 92 to 96 percent of the P2O5 contained in the matrix was extracted, while the P.05 concentration in the product acid ranged from 21 to 30 percent. The waste filter cake contained about 1 percent P205 and up to 18 percent water. These sandy compact filter cakes, comprised mostly of quartz and gypsum, appeared to be suitable for backfilling and reclamation of mined lands.

Among the numerous Low-grade manganese deposits in eastern Aroostook County, Maine, the Dudley deposit near Mapleton in the northern district is one of the few known to contain an appreciable tonnage averaging above 10 percent manganese. The ore body, consisting of stratified manganiferous hematitic shale, is over 5,000 feet long and ranges in width from 30 to 175 feet. The deposit was extensively explored during 1942-44 by the Manganese Ore Co., a subsidiary of M. A. Hanna Co. of Cleveland, Ohio. Data obtained from this work were made available to the State and Federal Geological Surveys for estimating ore reserves. An estimate by the Maine Geological Survey, using a 10-percent manganese cutoff and to a depth of 200 feet, shows 609,000 long tons of manganese metal in material averaging 12.6 percent manganese. By lowering the cutoff limit to 5 percent manganese, the estimate was increased to 919,000 long tons of metallic manga¬nese in material averaging, 10.4 percent manganese,

This same phonomonon of diffraction may be transposed into the X-ray domain. All that is necessary is to reduco, in the samo proportion, the wavo length of the light and the diameter of the particlo; thus, with radi- ations whose wave length is of the ordog of angstroms, the dimensions of the active particles go from 10 to 100 A that 18, the dimensions of col- loidal particlos. The evidence of this fact is shown by the following experimental schomo (fig. 1a): A narrow beam of X-rays passes through a thin layer of a modium containing micelles; the photographic film is placed a few centimeters behind the sample, and a small absorbing screen stops the direct beam in order to prevent its fogging the film. The intersect of the direct beam is surrounded by a narrow spot whose blackness decreases with the distance from the center. We will call this the spot of central diffusion (fig. 1b). The phenomenon, in spite of its relatively reat intensity, has been observed only by a few authors, who have simply given a qualitative description without attempting any quantitative de- ductions. This is due to the fact that observation of this phenonenon is not possible with the apparatus generally used to obtain X-ray diagrams, because the parasite foggings in the vicinity of the incident beam are sufficiently important to hide those produced by the sample. With the monochromator, however, used by us to obtain Debye-Sherer diagrams, this parasitic diffusion can be totally suppressed. In this way our attention was again directed to the spot of central diffraction, and we were led to make a detailed quaititative study of it.. then several papers have been published on this subject. Hosemann, using methods of calculation outlined by us, has extended them to the special case of fibrous substances, Kratky, on the other hand, starts from an entirely different theoretical point of view; ho examines the case, not of scattered particles, but of closely packed particles. 6ince We will now describe the experimental methods, summarize the calcu- lations needed in the elaboration of diagrams, and finally review the first results obtained in the vast domain of these new physical-chomical studies.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted Cu exchange tests for six common clays under simulated in situ leaching conditions. Regression equations were obtained from the data expressing the Cu exchange capacity as a function of Cu concentration, pH, and temperature. Using these equations, an analysis was made of the impact each clay could have on overall Cu recovery. The results suggest that Ca and Na montmorillonite clays could have a major impact on Cu recovery and that attapulgite and illite clays could have a smaller, but still significant, impact. Kaolinite and ripidolite clays pose little threat to loss of Cu from in situ leaching solutions.

Carbon monoxide (CO) sensors are used in mine fire early-warning systems. Experiments were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines with six diffusion-type CO sensors to determine their response to a reference CO concentration under both static and dynamic flow conditions. Static experiments were conducted with 0.5 L/min flow of 16 ppm CO in N2 through 8-and 12-L chambers. Dynamic flow experiments were conducted in two environmental chambers: One had directional flow capability of 1 m/s, and the second provided moderately nondirectional flow as high as 1.8 m/s. Reference CO concentrations of 13.5 to 19 ppm in air were used for the dynamic experiments. The results of the static experiments demonstrated that the sensors consistently underestimated the reference gas concentration. The dynamic experiment results showed the sensors provided reasonable agreement with the reference gas concentration when directional flow effects were not considered. Directional flow effects were evaluated for two sensors. One of the sensors showed a strong dependence upon the relative orientation of the diffusion tube with respect to flow direction. The second sensor did not show a dependence upon flow direction. The sensors' directional flow effect is significant for their proper in-mine utilization.

Computing average grade and tonnage either for an entire ore deposit or for individual blocks of ore is a continuing problem in mining. As part of a research program, investigating application of statistical techniques to mine sampling, Bureau of Mines engineers at the Denver Mining Research Center have made extensive use of an electronic digital computer for developing mine sampling theory, simulation of ore deposits, and analysis of mine sample and assay data. This report is one of a series describing use of the digital computer for rapid solution of computing problems in the mining industry.3 4 Development of a computer program to compute ore reserves by the commonly used triangular method was necessary so that results could be made available for analysis within hours.

Benzene and toluene are the first two members of an important homologous series whose general formula is CnH2n-6. The members of this series differ in composition from benzene by some integral multiple of CH2; they can all be prepared in the laboratory by the Wurtz-Fittig, Friedel-Crafts and Grignard syntheses. Because 'of the industrial importance of these-hydrocarbons, the limits of flammability of eight members of the series have been determined at 100° C.-(A temperature of 1000 C. was chosen because the determination of the upper limit of flammability of p-cymene requires an apparatus temperature. of at least 90° C. As elevated temperature data are available for other combustibles at 100° C. but not at 90° C., all data were taken at 100° C. in order to obtain comparable results.) Minimum ignition temperatures of these combustibles have been determined at laboratory-pressures.

Thermodynamic properties of indium oxide (In203) have been studied with a high-temperature galvanic cell employing stabilized zirconia electrolytes. In the temperature range 790° to 1,230° K the free-energy change for the cell reaction 21n(1) + 3Cu20(c) = In203(c) + 6Cu(c) together with the standard free energy of formation of cuprous oxide gives the standard free energy of formation of indium oxide from the elements as ?Gf° = -218.78 + 75.34 X 10-3T ±0.7 kcal/mole. A third-law analysis yields the standard enthalpy of formation: ?Hf°298.15 = -221.5 kcal/mole.

The study described in this report was undertaken to obtain information on the character and effect of antimony additions to titanium. The availability of high-purity, low-hardness titanium metal, resulting from fused-salt electrorefining techniques, permitted a reassessment and evaluation of the physical behavior of titanium-antimony alloys. Alloys, based on several grades of titanium containing up to 10 percent antimony, were arc-melted and processed to sheet by hot and cold rolling. Properties and characteristics were evaluated by hardness tests, hot and cold rollability, annealing treatments, metallographic examination, and tensile tests.

"The mathematical treatments used in the evaluation of particle size distribution from pipet-withdrawal centrifuge data are reviewed. An error in the published procedure for multiple-sample withdrawal systems is pointed out and a corrected formulation is presented. An alternative treatment, based on a piece-wise linearization of the size distribution is described. Computer simulations of the analytical and data evaluation procedures indicate that the errors in the original formulation are not generally serious and that the corrected and alternative procedures lead to very similar estimates. Except for some cases involving very narrow size distributions, the alternative approach appears to give slightly closer estimates of the size distribution. Comparisons based on actual experimental data are also described.1 IntroductionSedimentation methods are widely used for the determination of particle size distributions. The procedures are relatively simple to use and the results are essentially absolute, requiring no external calibration. Gravity sedimentation is typically applicable to particles in the size range of about I to 50 pm and generally involves measurement of the relative concentration of particles as a function of depth and time in a dilute suspension. "This paper presents a laboratory simulation of regrinding and resulting dust generation. An Automated Rotary Coal Cutting Simulator (ARCCS) was modified to conduct regrinding experiment. In order to estimate the effects of coal properties and operating parameters on regrinding and dust generation, an orthogonal fractional factorial experimental design was implemented in regrinding experiment. Marple personal cascade impactors, Series 290, were used to measure dust concentration during experiment. Three types of coal seams, namely, Waynesburg, Pittsburgh, and Lower Kittanning, were used to represent different coal properties. Experimental results and complete parametric analysis were presented.In a rotary cutting system, all the broken coal and part of the remaining coal from previous cutting cycles must be transported through part or entire circumference of the cutting drum. This transportation of already recovered coal through the cutting zone of rotary head makes it a rotary grinder. Some of the coal particles will be subjected to secondary fragmentation or regrinding in the process. The potential effect on dust generation by regrinding is significant because the cutting head utilizes kinetic energy to comminute recov¬ered coal material. The moving bits and bit blocks on the cutting head impact coal particles and transfer some of their kinetic energy to the particles. After obtaining kinetic energy, coal particles are free to impact one another and they also impact the coal seam or cutting head. During impact, high impact force and high internal stress concentration are created in the particles. Kinetic energy is transformed into strain energy. When stored strain energy exceeds allowable strain energy, the particles will break. A great amount of respirable dust will be generated due to impact failure. In reality, regrinding occurs at the same time as primary cutting. The particles to be ground are the result of primary cutting. Both primary cutting and regrinding produce dust. Therefore, it is impossible to separate regrinding from primary cutting. In order to study respirable dust generation by regrinding and analyze the influencing parameters, a laboratory approach was adopted. In this approach, it is possible to study the regrinding separating from primary cutting."

The number of natural-gasoline plants has shown a consistent decline in recent years, but the total capacity has increased steadily. The number of completed plants, as determined by a survey as of January 1, 1932, amounted to 959. Previous surveys of January 1, 1928 and 1930 showed 1,155 and 1,035 plants, respectively. Of the total plants on January 1, 1932, 859 were operating and 100 were shut down, compared with 999 operating and 36 shut down on January 1, 1930. The material gain in the number of inoperative plants in the last two years was probably due to the severe decline in prices of 1931. The low prices of 1931, which were approximately 40 per cent below 1930, made it virtually impossible for the majority of the independent plants, or plants not owned by a large integrated company, to operate at a profit. Accordingly, the majority of the plants removed from the list in 1930 and 1931 were owned by companies which were engaged solely in the manufacture of natural gasoline. The total daily capacity of the plants on January 1, 1932, amounted to 11,387,000 gallons, an increase of 871,000 gallons, or 8 per cent, in the two years 1930 and 1931. That the total capacity of the plants has increased while the number of plants has declined is due to the fact that nearly all the plants constructed in the last five years have been large plants. During 1931 the average total daily capacity of the operating plants was approximately 10,600,000 gallons, while the average daily production amounted to 4,944,000 gallons. This indicates that the plants operated during 1931 at 47 per cent of their capacity, compared with 58 per cent in 1930 and 61 per cent in 1929. Although more plants have been dismantled in Oklahoma in recent years than in any other State, it continues to rank first in number of plants. This report on the properties of commercial motor fuels sold in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee of the Cooperative Research Council (C.R.C. ) and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior . The first report contained data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-364 . Further reports on motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to the summer of 1941 have been issued . No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942 . The present report presents analytical data for 1,120 samples , representing the products of approximately 88 companies . As in previous surveys , these companies include both large and small suppliers . In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were received . Conforming to previous surveys , the data cover three groups of samplesregular - price , premium - price , and third - grade gasolines and each group has been averaged separately. The number of samples , items and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, are as follows : Regular price , 641 samples , 250 items , and 64 brands ; premium price , 439 samples , 222 items , and 68 brands ; third - grade gasoline , 50 samples , 50 items and 19 brands .
