The Bell & Zoller Coal & Mining Co. recently completed construction of two slopes at Mine 3 near Zeigler , Ill . The slopes are in the Big Muddy River Valley , and construction was particularly difficult because the strata from the surface to a depth of 70 feet comprise water saturated sandy clay and sand . Many mining companies have similar shaft- and slope - sinking problems , and because these slopes were satisfactorily completed and now are in use the methods followed during construction are described in this information circular . It is believed that other companies with similar problems . will benefit by adopting the methods followed at Mine 3 .

This paper describing the mining practices at the Argonaut mine, Amador County, California, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The mining practices described are those used in exploiting the low-grade gold ores in the heavy and swelling ground that occurs on the Mother Lode belt. The author acknowledges the assistance of E. A. Stent, vice-president, James L. Fontenrose, cost clerk, Joseph Mohorovich, mine foreman, of the Argonaut mine, and of E. D. Assuring ground control safety in many mining and tunneling projects depends, at least in part, on an understanding of in situ stress conditions that will be encountered. Yet it is rarely practical to conduct more than a very limited number of stress measurements. Stresses along the route of a proposed excavation are typically interpolated from available measurements, often assuming a linear variation of stress with depth (or elevation). However, projects where multiple stress measurements are conducted often report more complex variations of in situ stress, usually in apparent relationship to geologic structures. These structures often include lithologies of contrasting elastic properties. A method is proposed for estimating stresses in these cases by first back-calculating regional loads from available stress measurements and then modeling the distribution of stress throughout the rock mass. The method has been successfully applied to a set of in situ stress measurements from the Coeur d’Alene Mining District of northern Idaho, USA. Results provided new insights into district stress conditions and the distribution of rockburst hazards along mine drifts and between various mines. This success should transfer readily to suitable deep tunneling projects.

The flame safety lamp with metal-gauze enclosure was invented by Sir Humphrey Davy more than a century ago, primarily for its safe light; however, it soon became the standard device for detecting the presence of methane in mine atmospheres. It still is the most widely used device for this purpose and is also the most practicable means of detecting deficiency of oxygen in coal mines. A permissible flame safety lamp is similar in all respects to one that, after a series of tests, has been approved by the Bureau of Mines as safe for use in gassy mines. However, safety depends largely upon the way lamps are maintained and used.

The Douglas fluorite property is in the Empire district of eastern Pope County, Ill., which lies near the west boundary of the productive Southern Illinois fluorspar field in Hardin and Pope Countios. Production from mines on the Douglas property accounts for about one-half of the 72,000 tons of fluorspar with which the Empire district is credited. This output was from the Sycamore, Pierce, Slapout, and Empire veins, which are normal fissure veins of little displacement along which there has been local wall-rock replacement by fluorite.

"INTRODCJCTIONAlveolar macrophages are free lung cells located on the surface of small airways and alveoli. These phagocytes play an important role in the protection of the lung against airborne bacteria and particles.1 However, hyperactivation of pulmonary phagocytes can lead to excessive secretion of enzymes and reactive oxygen species which could result in lung injury, emphysema, or fibrosis.2,3 Analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage effluents for cell types and cellular activity has yielded information concerning the etiology of various pneumoconioses. For example, emphysema associated with inhalation of coal dust or cigarette smoke has been related to enhanced secretion of reactive oxygen species from alveolar macrophages.4-7 In contrast, hypoactivation of alveolar macrophages has been associated with inhalation of diesel particulates"" and has been related to increased susceptibility to pulmonary infection. s Inhalation of cotton dust has been associated with dramatic increases in lavagable polymorphonuclear leukocytes9 while pulmonary sarcoidosis and silicosis have been related with high numbers of lymphocytes in lavage effluentsl0,11The objective of the present study was to obtain lavage effluents from 8 control subjects, 8 healthy power plant workers exposed to fly ash, 1 healthy coal miner, and 1 rock driller with acute silicosis. These effluents were analyzed for total numbers of alveolar macrophages, lymphocytes and neutrophils and for secretory activity of alveolar macrophages. Data were then analyzed to determine what response patterns were characteristic for given dust exposures.METHODSSelection of SubjectsThe 8 control subjectS were all adult males from the area of Morgantown, WV. Two subjects among the controls had smoked cigarettes for approximately three pack-years and had stopped more than ten years ago. The 8 power plant :workers were all healthy adult male employees of a power facility in Hatfield, PA, approximately thirty miles from Morgantown. One of the power plant personnel was a comparable ex-smoker. The remaining subjects were all lifelong non-smokers. The coal miner was a healthy non-smoking male from Morgantown, WV. The rock driller was a patient under treatment with corticosteroids for acute silicosis. He had shown considerable clinical improvement with this treatment but still manifested significant radiologic and pulmonary functional abnonnalities at the time of lavage. The mean age of the 8 control subjects was 36 years (range: 31 to 49 years); the mean age of the remaining subjects studied was 38 years (range: 29 to 53 years)."

Five makes of expansion-type shells and two types of bolts (mild-steel and high-strength) were used in 30 tests made in sandstone and shale roof, The results show that the anchorage obtained in both the sandstone and shale were stronger than either type of bolt. That is, the yield loads of both bolt types were exceeded before excessive anchor slip occurred. A relationship for evaluating the anchorage effectiveness of 3/8-inch-diameter, expansion-type bolts is presented. A comparison of test results indicates that the anchorage effectiveness of 5/8-inch- and 3/4-inch-diameter expansion-type bolts did not differ appreciably.

This report summarizes studies by the Bureau of Mines in developing a simple method for estimating the phosphorus pentoxide (P205) content of finely ground sedimentary phosphate ores and beneficiated products. The method used involved leaching, filtration, and precipitation. The Bureau found that measurement of the volume of ammonium phosphomolybdate precipitate obtained from samples containing 16.8 to 37.7 percent P205 and the use of an appropriate calibration curve permitted estimates of percentage of P205 content accurate within ± 1.1 to ± 2.6 percent, respectively, at the 95-percent confidence limits. Incidental to mineral dressing and petrographic investigations of western phosphate ores in 1959, the Bureau of Mines undertook development of a simple process-control method for rapid on-the-spot evaluation of phosphate-mineral recovery. Because of the fine-grained and obscure character of western phosphate ores, chemical, rather than microscopic or petrographic, techniques were investigated. The described method involves acid decomposition of the ore or product, filtration, addition of ammonium molybdate reagent to the filtrate, and centrifuging and measuring the volume of yellow ammonium phosphomolybdate precipitate produced.

This paper describing the mining practices at Mine No. 2 of the Marquette Range, Michigan is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various minim; districts of the United States. The publication, of this information should be of interest to the industry at large and the exchange of ideas thereby made possible should be of economic value to operators in all harts of the country. Air compressor explosions that are caused by the ignition of combustible vapor mixtures cannot be explained by a single reaction mechanism or sequence of events. Explosions have been caused by the sudden release of large quantities of lubricating oil, by the rapid vaporization of oil that had accumulated slowly in high-pressure piping, and by the production of decomposition products from carbonaceous deposits. Ignitions can be caused by the heat produced in a catalytic reaction, in a compression process, or when a shock wave is propagated through a combustible vapor-air mixture. The frequency of these ignitions can be minimized by establishing proper maintenance and cleaning schedules. Further study is needed to satisfactorily correlate the various factors involved in compressor explosions.

As part of its program to conserve the Nation's natural resources by developing improved performance materials, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, has conducted an investigation of materials of construction able to withstand the high temperature and hostile environments encountered in coal gasification units. Refractory pipe liners are required when extremely hot gases or abrasive solids are transported between processing units in the gasification plants. One promising technique for producing refractory pipe (or refractory pipe liners) is centrifugal casting. For this study, the effect of processing variables such as workability, additives, reinforcement and spinning time, and centrifugal force were evaluated using four commercial refractory concretes. In addition, data on characteristics such as strength, density, abrasion, and spalling resistance of 5-inch-diam refractory pipe were developed. Techniques for forming large-diameter (19-inch) refractory pipe also were evaluated. The test results indicated that all four refractory concretes could be made into strong, homogeneous pipe, but that optimum casting parameters had to be determined for each specific composition. The investigation revealed that the major controlling factor in the production of the centrifugally cast pipe was the workability of the refractory concrete.

Elastic-plastic finite-element simulation of cut-and-fill stoping in deep, narrow veins shows substantial quantitative agreement with field measurements of stope closure and fill pressure made at two mines in the Coeur d&apos;Alene mining district of northern Idaho. The simulation procedure, validated by field data, was used in an analytical study of vein-wall closure and sill-pillar stress as influenced by fill modulus, rock modulus, and premining stress. Ratios of closure and pillar stress in the filled stopes to closure and pillar stress in the unfilled stopes are used as prediction indices for fill performance. In general, the support capability of fill increases dramatically as the ratio of fill modulus to rock modulus approaches 1. A significant reduction in closure .from the open stope--up to 75 percent--occurs with a relatively low-quality 10-ksi-modulus fill (rock modulus of 1,000 ksi). However, a higher quality fill is needed to achieve a substantial reduction in pillar stress from that of the open stope. A 100-ksi-modulus fill reduces pillar stress in both the 36-foot and l6-foot pillars (vein width is 10 feet) by about 50 percent relative to the open stope.

Based on laboratory tests and preliminary field tests of off-the-shelf steel toed rubber boots, a molded sole design was developed to provide increased traction over conventional calendared sole miners&apos; boots. The pattern provided sharp edges perpendicular to both lateral and fore-aft slip vectors. The sole was designed to reduce mud caking. An instep lace-up capability was added to better secure the foot inside the boot. A five month field evaluation compared the prototype boots to the boots the participants usually wear. Although objective slip and fall data showed no significant advantage for the prototype, subjective evaluations made by the participants indicated increased traction for the prototype boots. Approximately 75 percent preferred the prototype to their own boot. Approximately one-third used the lace-up capability. It was concluded that molded soles provide better traction than calendared soles for the underground mining environment.

[A calorimetric method3/ for the determination of benzene in amounts as low as 0.001 m has been developed recently at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Experiment Station by the authors, with the assistance of chemical personnel from the Allegheny County (Pa.) Relief Works Division. The method is based on the direct nitration of either liquid or gas - phase benzene, followed by neutralization, extraction with butanone, and final treatment with sodium hydroxide which produces a violet color. The color is matched with color standards of known values. Although the method is adaptable to many conditions the primary objective was a procedure that would be suitable for hygienic investigations.]

A large number of operators of various industries in the United States do not appear to realize the great returns in dollars and cents which result from intelligently directed safety work . Managers of co 1 mines , metal mines , open-pit mines , quarries , steel mills , cement mills , oil rei meries , iron works , or other industrial operations , should by all means realize the great waste resulting from accidents , in order to appreciate the necessity for a continuous accident -prevention policy . While the prevention of accidents is worth while from the humanitarian standpoint alone , it has an equally important economic side , and before our mining industrial operations will be made as safe as they should be , it is apparent that this dollars and cents viewpoint must be given full recognition in order to bring before many of the men who run the industries the great importance of this phase of industrial management . : There is a tendency upon the part of the opera or who has not given thought to the cost of accidents ( and there are many mining operators of this type) to insure his company against compensation losses and against catastrophes for which he can secure insurance , and think he has done his duty ar an executive . Even though industrial operations were not compelled to pay compensation , and even if the management were not moved by humanitarian motives to try to stop accidents , it would pay many times over to carry on accident prevention work vigorously and continuously. : In some parts of the United States , the state compensation and insurance requirements are such that the operator does not receive a reduction in his insurance rate per men employed upon having made safety installations or upon having achieved a reduction of accidents in his plant . Under such conditions the management frequently does not feel encouraged to emert much effort in bettering the accident rate . However , when the responsible officials of a company realize the much greater harm to an operation which results from doing no accident - prevention work , and the great benefit in reduced costs which usually follows effective safety work , they should be inclined to do almost everything possible to reduce accidents , regardless of considerations as to accident compensations . There are enough indirect costs resulting from accidents to wreck many types of business ; excessive accidents result in disorganization and failure , while immunity from accidents usually means a smoothly running efficient organization .

The Bureau of Mines studied the feasibility of producing copper matte in an electric furnace from blends of copper concentrate similar to those currently smelted in a gas-fired reverberatory system at an installation in Tacoma, Wash. A 800-kva electric-arc furnace was used to determine the distribution of constituents when arseniferous concentrates are being smelted in an electric-arc furnace. Test results from smelting 40 tons of materials indicated that electric smelting is more like a conventional gas-fired system than originally expected. Although gas composition over the molten bath is much different in an electric furnace, the secondary constituents such as arsenic, lead, zinc, and antimony behaved the same as in a reverberatory furnace. The results established that an electric furnace would be compatible with sulfur and particulate recovery facilities that are being used.

The development worth included a study of possible interference by chemicals that be present in those situations in which the method. would be employed. In this study it was found that a specimen of hexane prepared by the Gulf Research Laboratory, Pittsburgh, by fractionation of West Virginia natural gas gave positive result for benzene, whereas a specimen of pentane prepared in the same manner showed only a trace, and specimens of n -heptane and octane (2,2,4 trimethylpentane) supplied by Eastman Kodak Co. save a negative result. According to information obtained from the Eastman Kodak Co. the latter two compounds were highly purified, the n-heptene being prepared from line and the octane synthesized in the laboratory. On nitration of a larger amount of tae natural hexane a visible quantity, of needlelike crystals which resembled those of m-dinitrobenzene was obtained. The hexane from this nitration was recovered by distillation and again nitrated, but no crystals or colorimetric indication of benzene was obtained. This imitated that the specimen of natural hexane contained a substance which at least had the chemical behavior of benzene.]

During studies of the various methods for determining and specifying the factors that indicate whether a particular coke is better or worse than other cokes for metallurgical uses, questions arose as to the precision of screen-analysis tests on coke. Although the usual index of precision, the standard deviation of the test result, gives a measure of the precision of these data, the experimental determination of the standard deviation for a particular set of conditions requires tests on a large number of duplicate samples. Because this procedure necessaily involves a great deal of labor, an equation for predicting standard deviations from theoretical considerations has been developed. Results predicted with this equation agree satisfactorily with the experimental values and are applicable to tests on coal, coke, gravel, and other bulk materials.
