As part of the research effort of investigating the effects of microwave energy upon the chemical and physical properties of different minerals and ores, the Bureau of Mines has conducted basic research into identifying those properties of minerals that are affected by microwave energy, namely, the dielectric constant and loss tangent. These properties were determined utilizing the theory of microwave propagation in a coaxial waveguide filled with a dielectric material and measuring the input impedance with an RF impedance analyzer that operates from 1 MHz to 1 GHz. By knowing the microwave frequency and filling the waveguide with a powdered mineral, the dielectric properties of the mineral sample were determined. From these dielectric properties, theoretical microwave heating characteristics of each mineral could be calculated. These same mineral samples were then irradiated by a 915 MHz 30 kW variable power microwave oven and dielectric heating studies were performed. A comparison of the theoretical heating characteristics and the results from actual dielectric heating studies was conducted to evaluate the dielectric property measurements on each mineral. This report presents the results of the Bureau's research in identifying the dielectric properties of low-loss minerals according to the mineralogical classification scheme along with their irradiation studies. Though far from complete, this study represents some of the more frequently encountered low-loss minerals.

Credited with production of more than 164,000 flasks Of quicksilver from 1876 to 1944, the Oat Hill mine has ranked third in output in the United States. During World War II, when the demand for mercury was high, this property was selected for diamond drill with the purpose of increasing ore reserves so that production could be maintained or, if necessary, increased. Although the existence of marginal-grade ore (fill material) left in the stapes and possibly of virgin ore of good grade had suspected in certain parts of the Oat Hill mine, no factual information to tonnage, grade, or location was available. In close cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey, the Bureau of Mines studied old records and the few available incomplete maps. Diamond drilling began in November 1943 and was completed in December 1944. Twenty-eight holes aggregating 8,121 feet were drilled, in only parts of the promising areas disclosed by the study of the data available. Detailed data on the work done by the Bureau as well as a brief history of the property and some operating details are described in this report.

Cooperation between the United States Bureau of Mines and the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain, continuous since 1924, has made possible this and other papers on safety subjects. Grateful acknowledgment is made to representatives of the Safety in Mines Research Board of the Mines Department for their assistance in arranging visits to several mine-safety stations, and to F. H. Wynne, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines, Great Britain, for arranging visits to mines in Great Britain, Belgium, France, and Germany. During the summer of 1927 the writer had the privilege of visiting the mine-safety testing stations in Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France, in the order named. All of these countries have large coal mines, many of which are rated as gassy. Therefore, when the installation of electrical equipment is contemplated, each of these countries is confronted with the same safety problem as in the United States - the development of electrical equipment that will not ignite gassy mine atmospheres, should such atmospheres through neglect or accident surround the equipment. The means used by those countries in safeguarding gassy mines should therefore be of general interest to safety engineers in American coal mines, and it is proposed to give a brief survey for each of the four countries mentioned. The first of these surveys will cover conditions in Great Britain.

This paper describing the concentrator practice of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co. at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, is one of a series of articles on milling methods and costs being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The Cananea concentrator treats 2,400 tons of copper ore per day by preferential flotation, whereby the copper sulphides are floated and the iron pyrite depressed. During the first half of the year 1929 the heads to the concentrator averaged 3.29 per cent of copper, the recovery was 95.74 per cent of the total copper, and the concentrates produced contained 21.44 per cent of copper.

The mass spectra of 14 previously unreported alkylthiophenes are pre-sented. Low ionization voltage data of selected compounds from these 14 and 23 previously reported alkylthiophenes are presented and discussed for their value in supporting fragmentation mechanisms analytical correlations. A comparison with and corroboration of earlier correlations is made. Additional correlations concerning detection of side chain branching and the detection of ethyl-alkyl and propyl-alkylthiophenes are made. A discussion of the possible fragmentation routes and mechanism of fragmentation is given. Speculative structures are inferred s out some of the ions and hence this work provides a basis for suggesting fation mechanisms for the alkylthiophenes according to modern theories ass spectrometry. Verification of these mechanisms must await the availability of isotopically labeled molecules which are labeled in specific lotions that permit the definition of the paths of frag-mentation. Some suggestions for further work to generalize on the correlations and studies made to this point are presented.

Lack of sufficient publication funds has resulted in the accumulation of considerable unpublished experimental work on copper metallurgy by the Bureau staff . The present report gives extended abstracts of this work , as well as a discussion of the best direction for future efforts . The experimental work reported in this series of papers was done in cooperation with the University of Arizona , Tucson , Ariz . The investigations covered in the third , fifth , and seventh papers were done under the direction of G. L. Oldright and the remainder under the direction of V. H. Gottschalk .

Aniline points have been used to some extent for more than 20 years. to indicate the types of structures in hydrocarbons and thus to analyze mixtures of hydrocarbons . This type of analysis has been applied - principally to the low -boiling hydrocarbons found in the gasoline range . Although there is some disagreement as to their merits , both aniline point and diesel index (aniline point in degrees Fahrenheit times A.P.I. gravity at 60 ° F. divided by 100) are used rather extensively for evaluating ignition qualities of diesel fuels . In recent years aniline points have been employed in the study of lubricating - oil fractions . They also have been used to predict : the tendency of different oils to cause swelling of synthetic rubbers.5/ Recent standardization of the aniline - point determination by the American Society for Testing Materials has encouraged wider use of this test . Considerable data concerning , aniline points and critical solution temperatures in aniline have been accumulated in the course of a study of related subjects . "INTRODCJCTJONPlatelet activating factor (PAF) is a glycerophospholipid (1-0-alkyl-2-acctyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphoryl choline) which has been shown to mediate a broad range of biological activities. 1·3 Its pulmonary actions include contraction of pulmonary tissue,4 secretion of leukotrienes from leukocytcs,5 airway constriction,6 pulmonary edema,7 and enhanced migration of neutrophils into the airspaces of thelungs.8-9PAF can be released from several different cell types, such as, basophils, neutrophils and alveolar macrophages, in response to a variety of particulates or membrane stimulants which include zymosan, calcium ionophore, phorbol esters, chemotactic agents, and endotoxin. 1~1 3 Therefore, PAF may play an important role in the development of pneumoconioses by mediating pulmonary responses of lung cells to a variety of occupational dusts. To investigate this possibility, we determined the effects of P AF on several physiological parameters of neutrophils, alveolar macrophages, and alveolar type Il epithelial cells.METHODSIsolation of CellsNeutrophils were isolated from human blood by dextran settling and centrifugal elutriation.14 Isolated neutrophils (93% pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium (145 mM NaCl, 5 mM KCI, 10 mM HEPES, 5 mM glucose, and 1 mM CaC12; pH = 7.4). Cell number and volume were determined with an electronic cell counter equipped with a sizing attachment.Rat alveolar macrophages were obtained by pulmonary lavage with ea2+, Mg2+-free Hanks balanced salts solution. 15 Alveolar macrophages (94% pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium, counted, and sized electronically.Rat alveolar type Il cells were isolated by enzymatic digestion for 35 minutes at 37°C with 40 µ/ml type I elastasc and 0.1 % collagenase and purified by centrifugal elutriation. 16.17 Type Il cells (92 % pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium for measurement of membrane potential, oxygen consumption, and trypan blue exclusion. Type Il pneumocytcs were resuspended in 0.1 M NaCl plus 0.05 M HEPES (pH = 7.8) to measure cytochrome P450-dependent activities and aggregation. Cell size and number were determined electronically."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field study to investigate thin suppression of respirable dust by water sprays on a continuous-mining machine. Determining the importance of the top and bottom sprays for two types of spray nozzles was emphasized. Results showed, at a 90-pct confidence level, that (1) at least 70 pct of the dust was generated during the sump cut, even though nearly half of the coal was mined during the downshear operation, (2) the water sprays on the top of the boom had little effect in suppressing respirable dust, and (3) B.D. 5 spray nozzles mounted beneath the boom reduced dust at least 33 pet more than B.D. 5 sprays mounted on top of the boom. A single-cut technique was developed that gave good reproducibility for replicate cuts (coefficient of variation of 20 pct).

All known resources within the four proposed RARE II additions to the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness in northwestern California occur in the Gig Butte-Shinbone study area (fig. 1). No mineral resources are Figure 1.--NEAR HERE. known in the East Fork, Murphy blade, or Wilderness Contiguous units. About 2,400 tons (2,177 t) of subeconomic manganese resources averaging 9.5 percent manganese have been estimated at the Blue Jay Mine in the Big Butte-Shinbone unit. In addition about 9,700 tons (8,793 t) of subeconomic chromium-nickel-cobalt resources in thin laterite soil at the Grubstake Prospect contain about 1.27 percent chromium oxide, 0.45 percent nickel, and 0.03 percent cobalt. Adjacent Ultramafic rock outcrops have pods averaging 2.5 percent chromium oxide (Cr203); one pod contains about 40 tons (36 t) of indicated subeconomic resources.

Knott County is one of the smaller coal-producing areas in the Eastern Kentucky coal field. It contains numerous coal beds, many too thin to support mining over a wide area, Coal produced in the county is from a few rail-shipping operations and many small truck mines. Many smaller mines are working beds whose exact location in the coal-bearing strata is uncertain. Samples were collected from 11 different coal beds, of which the Fire Clay, Hindman, Upper Elkhorn No. 3, and Flag are the most import ant from a product ion standpoint. Known reserves in the Hindman bed. are very limited, and almost the entire production from this bed is gathered from two comparatively, large rail-shipping mines in addition to the four principal beds, samples were taken in the Francis, Haddix, Fire Clay Rider, Whitesburg, Amburgy, Upper horn No. 2, and Upper Elkhorn No. I .beds. Figure 1 is a typical section of the strata, showing the more important coal beds and. readily identifying their location with respect to each other. The bed names as shown are particularly important because of the local tendency to assign several names to the same bed. This report summarizes the results of preliminary mineral-dressing studies by the Bureau of Mines on five samples of copper-bearing ore from various Alaska de-posits. The work on each sample was not extensive enough to warrant individual publication. The results, however, indicate the possibilities and limitations of concentration of the respective ores. The information therefore may be helpful in future development of these ore bodies. Four of the five samples tested were submitted to the laboratory by engineers of the Bureau of Mines as part of the examinations and survey investigations of strategic-mineral deposits in Alaska. This program is conducted to assist development of mineral resources in the Territory and particularly to aid economic exploitation of marginal or complex ores. The fifth sample was submitted by engineers of the Defense Minerals Exploration Administration.

Electromagnetic narrow-band signals were transmitted through the earth at 27 coal mines located throughout the United States. From those Bureau of Mines tests, apparent earth conductivity values were derived based upon a homogeneous half-space model of the earth. The derived conductivity values were found to be inversely proportional to the transmitted frequency and mine depth. A linear regression model relating the logarithm of the conductivity to the mine depth was formulated, and the results indicate that the mine depth can be an adequate predictor of the apparent earth conductivity above coal mines. Apparent earth conductivity was found to decrease with mine depth.

From thermodynamic calculations Maier predicted that zinc oxide and methane would react at specified temperatures substantially according to equation (1). (1.) ZnO + CH4 = Zn (gas) + CO + 2H2. Other reactions that may take place are (2.) CH4 = C + 2H2. (3.) ZnO + CO = Zn (gas) + CO2. (4.) ZnO + H2 = Zn (gas) + H2O. Maier predicted that 870°C would be the critical temperature above which reaction (1) would take precedence over reaction (2) and that reaction (1), at equilibrium, would be substantially complete at or above 927°C. Theoretical considerations indicate that reaction (1) is reversible: this is supported, but not proved, by experimental data. The other reactions are known to be reversible. At low temperatures reaction (2) requires a catalyst and it is slow below 1000°C. Reactions (3) and (4) are rapid, but the equilibrium constants are such that only small concentrations of CO2 or H2O can be produced below 1000°C. Maier calculated that CO2 should not exceed 0.5 per cent at 870°C., and the calculation for water vapor gives a still smaller order of magnitude.

An analysis of the geologic structure of an area of Buchanan County, Va., was made by the Bureau of Mines using imagery from an airborne AN/APQ-97 side-looking radar system to evaluate that mapping technique for delineating structural features that may cause mining problems. Side-looking airborne radar (SLAR) was found to be a useful remote sensing tool for geologic structural analysis, Fault and joint systems identified by lineaments and linear patterns in the imagery were verified by surface and in-mine observations. Little Paw Paw fault was extended 10 miles by SLAR lineament analysis. A 22-mile fault, here named the Bishop-Bradshaw Creek fault, was mapped by lineament analysis and verified by observation of the fault on the Bishop Coal Co. mine map and on offset patterns of commercial gas production along the fault and surface observation of lineament along the fault. Three major super-imposed joint sets and several fault or fractured zones were identified by SLAR lineament analysis, showing more complex structure than earlier mapping indicated. SLAR imagery accurately delineated structural features that are known to affect gas migration and accumulation and that weaken the rock forming the immediate roof to mine workings, causing mining problems and potentially hazardous environment in the mines.

The Ely mine, which at one time was the largest producer of copper in the United States, has been idle for the past 30 years. A remarkably continuous ore shoot probably averaging 100 feet wide and 19 feet thick was mined on about a 25° slope for 3,400 feet on the incline. The ore was massive sulfides containing chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and sphalerite. The estimated production of the Ely mine is 400,000 tons of ore averaging 3.3 percent copper. Because of the critical position of copper during the recent war, a search for extensions and recurrences of parallel ore shoots at the Ely deposit seemed warranted. The Bureau of Mines surveyed selected areas by geophysical methods, diamond-drilled nine holes, and sampled mine dumps during its investigations, which began in 1942 and terminated in 1946. The diamond drilling totaled 5,229 feet. The logs of the holes include chemical analyses of mineralized sections.

THE IMPORTANCE of infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectrometry in studies of the structure of coal and similar substances is described. Special experimental techniques have been developed for these studies. Thin sections of coal are preferred, but halide pellets are easier to prepare. Information obtained from infrared spectra on chemical functional groups has been discussed; the importance of both intensities and wavelengths of absorption bands has been emphasized. Functional groups assigned include aliphatic and aromatic CH, methylene and methyl groups, hydrogen-bonded hydroxyls, hydrogen-bonded and chelated carbonyls, phenolic structures, minerals, and aromatic structures that are benzenoid or polynuclear. Infrared studies of structures of coal extracts, distillates, and reaction products of various processes, both chemical and physical, are discussed. Coallike infrared spectra of chars of model compounds have been utilized extensively in studies of coal structure. Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra of coals show a lack of fine structure and low spectral intensities. These results have been applied to the questions of the chemical and physical structure of coal, particularly the question of polynuclear aromaticity of coals. The color of coal is also treated. The physical-chemical origin of the color of coal may be due to free radicals, as interesting correlations of ultraviolet-visible spectra with electron paramagnetic resonance have been obtained. The optical color of coal has been explained and simulation of the color changes observed in thin sections has been carried out, The spectra and structure of coal derivatives and other carbonaceous materials are also discussed. Possible sources of error in absorption spectral measurements are pointed out. Limited measurements of the ultraviolet-visible reflectance spectra of coal are described.

The Federal Bureau of Mines examined a low-temperature tar obtained from a small-scale commercial unit for carbonizing North Dakota lignite for products that might be important to the economic processing of the tar. Tie tar may be divided into three distinct parts: (1) Tar acids, 45 volume-percent; (2) tar bases, 1 volume percent; and (3) neutral compounds, 54 volume-percent. It has a boiling range of approximately 150° to 380° C. (the decomposition temperature) and yields 18 weight-percent as hard pitch. The tar distillate up to 365° C. may be separated as: (1) Tar acids, 48 volume-percent; (2) tar bases, 1 volume-percent; and (3) hydrocarbons, 51 volume-percent. The tar-acid distillate, boiling to approximately 265° C., was characterized in some detail; the neutral fractions and the tar bases were less thoroughly examined. In general, as might be expected of a primary low-temperature tar, the lower boiling fractions are less in quantity compared with the usual high-temperature tar. The homologous series of each major class appears to be rather complete, although some components are present in very small amounts. The tar is quite unstable thermally, and might be more conveniently processed by extraction methods rather than by distillation procedures. The neutral fraction of the tar is highly aromatic, and might be considered as base stock for the production of liquid fuels.
