The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted a field survey of 153 bituminous coal strip and auger mines to estimate coal recovery from surface mines in the Eastern United States. Recovery was calculated from field data by measuring coal losses resulting from mining coal and leaving barriers. Mean total recovery for strip mining in States east of the Mississippi River was 83.0 percent and ranged from 72.3 percent for Tennessee to 91.3 percent for Maryland. Mining losses and barrier losses were 10.1 and 7.7 percent, with standard deviations of 4.8 and 10.4 percent, respectively, indicating that barrier losses, although less than mining losses, were more variable. Mean total coal recovery varied only slightly for the two regions studied; 82.7 percent for Appalachia and 84.3 for the Midwest. Total recovery grouped by mining method--contour, area, and mountaintop removal--was 79.8,84.7, and 85.3 percent, respectively. Mean auger recovery was 35.9 percent; of the total average loss of 64.1 percent, over one-half resulted from design limitations while the remainder was attributed to operating losses. The wide recovery range at individual mines indicates the variability of the eastern surface coal mining industry. Because of this, care should be exercised in applying the results of this report to reserve estimates other than those of a general nature.

As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines program seeking improvements to the Bayer process, a typical Jamaican bauxite was heated at temperatures up to 500° C in hydrogen, and its leachability under Bayer process conditions was measured and properties of its leached residue were observed. The objectives were to find ways to decrease the amount of organic carbon in bauxite or in leach liquor derived from it without impairing its leachability, and to improve the leached residue's filterability. Techniques employed included heating bauxite under pressure in an autoclave with hydrogen, and in flowing hydrogen at ambient pressure in a tube furnace. Leaching tests were done with a 600-mL stirred reactor. In some of the leaching tests, ferrous sulfate (FeS04) was introduced before leaching to produce a partially magnetic product. Results showed that exposure to hydrogen at temperatures from 160° to 360° C progressively diminished the bauxite's content of organic carbon and decreased the ratio of organic carbon to aluminum in leach liquor, an improvement that would allow a process using hydrogen-treated bauxite to be operated at a smaller recycle ratio, thereby consuming less energy and allowing greater throughput for a plant of given capacity. The bauxite's leachability was not impaired by high-temperature pretreatments, except at temperatures higher than 280° C. Pretreatments in hydrogen produced black, partially reduced bauxite which upon leaching gave a residue that was attracted to a magnetic field and was amenable to separation from green liquor by a magnetic filtration method.

In June 1942 , ' the Bureau of Mines selected the Zonia copper mine , near Kirkland , Yavapai County , Arizona , as a property meriting investigation in connection with its search for supplies of strategic minerals for use in the war . The following month , representatives of the War Production . Board conferred with Bureau officials and requested that the property be explored with the object of determining the tonnage and grade of ore that could be brought into production quickly and mined cheaply by open-pit methods . The work wa's designed to verify information submitted by the owners in support of an application for a Government loan. It was essential that the investigations be completed promptly , so that operations might be planned and copper produced for war needs . The investigations called for surface trenching , diamond drilling , and check sampling of underground workings . Unable to purchase equipment for trenching without considerable delay , the Bureau saved time by borrowing most of the necessary items from the Golden Queen mine of the Gold Fields Development Co. at Mohave , Calif. This company , whose engineers had sampled some of the old trenches , had a tentative agreement with the owners to operate and manage the Zonia mine in event the loan was granted . Additional equipment was borrowed from two Governmental agencies . The exploratory work , completed in 16 weeks , was carried on 7 days a week .

While Cr(VI) is a known carcinogen, the underlying biochemical mechanism is still not fully understood (1). In a pioneering study Jennette (2) utilized electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy to demonstrate that a long-lived Cr(V) species is generated during the reduction of Cr(VI) by microsomes in the presence of NADPH. Later Wetterhahn and co-workers (3, 4) showed that incubation of chromate with isolated rat liver mitochondria causes the reduction of Cr(VI), as well as the formation of a Cr(V) species. Analogous Cr(V) species have also been detected in the reduction of Cr(VI) by other cellular systems such as Hanserulla polymorphared (5) and blood cells (6, 7). All these as well as other studies (8-12) have suggested that this Cr(V) species plays a significant role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. Thus far, however, the chemical structure of this dominant Cr(V) species formed in cellular systems has not been identified, and this observation provided an impetus for the present investigation. Another reason for undertaking this study was that some recent reports (10-16) suggest that hydroxyl ('OH) radicals may also play an important role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity. In particular, it has been shown that OH radicals are formed in reactions between Cr(V) species and H2O2 (13-16), and that the radical yield depends on the chemical structure of the Cr(V) species (15). For example, while Cr(V)-diol complexes efficiently generate OH radicals, another Cr(V) species, the tetraperoxochromate (CrO3/8) ion, does not (15). Thus in the present study, we focused our attention on the following: (a) structural identification of the Cr(V) species generated in the reduction of Cr(VI) by subcellular as well as cellular systems, using microsomes, mitochondria, and Escherichia coli; (b) possible detection of OH radical in the same systems since there is no earlier report of chromium-mediated generation of 'OH radicals in a cellular system; (c) possible involvement of molecular oxygen in chromium-related OH radical generation since a recent report (17) indicated that Cr(VI) mutagenesis is strongly oxygen dependent; and (d) elucidation of the mechanism of OH radical formation in these systems.

Quick-Fix Blowout Stoppings were evaluated in several underground mines as an alternative to conventional ventilation control bulkheads. Blowout stoppings offer considerable savings in bulkhead construction and repair costs if the 0.1 inch H20 of differential pressure required to inflate them is available. The Quick-Fix Blowout Stoppings were utilized successfully in uranium mines in the Southwestern United States where savings in bulkhead construction and repairs to blast damaged bulkheads are estimated to equal $9,500 over the projected 2 year average life of a blowout stopping. Two types of material were evaluated. Five methods of anchoring the stoppings to drift walls were evaluated. Three methods of anchor attachment to the stopping material were evaluated. Blast pressure measurements were made in conjunction with the evaluation of the blowout stoppings.

As a part of the strategic mineral program, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples several manganese properties in Colorado. As all of the ores were too low-grade to be acceptable to manufacturers of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were required .to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration. Manganese in the form of impregnations in sedimentary beds is found in the Denver plains area a few miles east of the Rocky Mountain front. Deposits are reported to occur intermittently over a distance of more than 200 miles. The manganese oxides occur in beds of conglomerate or arkosic sand, generally accompanied by limonite. The Manganese and iron oxides,, however, usually are found in separate layers. Three samples were submitted for beneficiation tests, two samples from Buckley Field bombing Yang, Arapahoe County, and one from near Franktown, Douglas County.

The trend toward encouragement of worker participation in accident prevention in the coal mines of the United States is not new; however, it has been given added impetus in recent years and is now definitely progressing. It has been found by experience that, although there are many approaches to a mine-safety program that will include the workers themselves as well as their supervisors, no one way is suitable under all circumstances. It requires the concerted efforts of many agencies working along parallel lines toward a common goal. The following seven principal agencies, using somewhat different methods, are listed to illustrate how this problem is approached throughout the coal-mining industry 1. Federal Bureau of Mines. 2. State mining departments (in individual States where coal is produced). 3. Programs conducted by individual mine operators. 4. Programs conducted by mine workers' organizations (unions). 5. Institutes, societies, and other educational organizations. 6. Coal operators' associations (regional and national). 7. Universities, college, and high schools. Each of the seven approaches to safety are discussed briefly, and their methods end contributions, such as publications and other activities, are listed.

The Brattice Window Method was used to measure the leakage rates of a total of 42 ventilation stoppings in 8 hardrock mines. Various types of stopping construction were evaluated. The following types are listed in order of decreasing effectiveness: 1) Cinder block, 2) Timber and mortar, 3) Timber and polyurethane foam, and 4) Timber and brattice material. There are slight differences in the effectiveness of the first three types, while the timber and brattice type is substantially inferior to the others. The repeatability of the Brattice Window Method was found to vary with physical conditions in the mine such as stopping location with respect to intersections, regularity of drift cross section, and the presence of hardware such as air and water pipes, timber sets and wire mesh. The Brattice Window Method is viewed primarily as a tool for estimating and comparing stopping leakages for the purpose of determining where repair efforts should be concentrated. A laboratory test program resulted in the derivation of several "rules of thumb" for employing the Brattice Window Method, which will aid in securing accurate and repeatable data.

The objectives of the work described in this report are to determine the communications requirements and need for communications, both for voice and control, on longwalls, and to make recommendations for longwall communications equipment and systems. These recommendations are designed to guide the future development of longwall communications. Information necessary for the accomplishment of this work has been gathered by a series of visits to longwall mines and discussions with longwall mine operators, as well as with suppliers of longwall communications and mining equipment and with Bureau of Mines personnel. In addition, it has proven possible, through personal interviews and literature evaluation, to gain an understanding of the experience and attitudes towards longwall communications in countries where longwall mining is far more widespread than in the U.S., namely the Federal Republic of Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Belgium.

Wyoming County had for many years supplied large quantities of coking coals to coke plants throughout the eastern United States and Canada. Up to the present most of the coal has been produced from relatively few beds, but in the future the coal will be produced from beds not previously mined in quantity. This trend is shown in the entire Winding Gulf field, of which Wyoming County is a part. This publication is one of a series of Bureau of mines reports appraising the Nation's coking coal, which y be used to determine the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards. This investigation of the preparation characteristics of Wyoming County coals is the third of the series undertaken in West Virginia.

This report summarizes work performed under Phase I of USBM Contract No. H0366024, Noise Reduction of Jumbo Mounted Percussive Drills. Four drills -Gardner-Denver D93LAR and DH123 and Ingersoll-Rand 0475 and VL120 models were measured at the two manufacturers? test sites; data are given in terms of characteristic noise and vibration levels. A survey of percussive rock drill users is reported. The rationale for the choice of a demonstration drill, the Gardner-Denver DH123, is given and a desired noise reduction goal is established.

This project describes the design and testing of large face ventilation systems for oil shale mining. A design data base was generated by reviewing general industry practice, oil shale industry planning, and technical literature. Conceptual designs for seven different systems were developed and evaluated for suitability. A large, free-standing, jet fan and reversible fan with rigid duct were selected for fabrication and testing. The two systems were field tested in a dead-end heading 55 ft wide by 30 ft high and 320 ft long. System performance was optimized using measurements of air flow direction and air velocity. Total system performance was then measured using SF6 tracer gas released to simulate blast fumes, hot diesel exhaust, methane layering and methane from a blasted muckpile. Field testing indicated that both systems delivered similar performance. The jet fan offered some clear advantages because of its mobility, ease of oper-ation and lower power requirement. It also offered some functional advantages in ventilating for methane because of it high average velocity.

Of the common causes of the larger mine accidents, such as falls of roof and coal, gas and dust explosions, mine fires, and the misuse of explosives, all of which are often closely related, each must be studied and fought in a manner peculiar to itself. The last mentioned, the misuse of black powder and other explosives, is sometimes considered the least important of these causes of mine accidents; but its impor- tance is much greater than the statistics indicate, for the reason that the misuse of explosives is the true cause of many of the fatal mine fires, gas or dust explosions, and falls of roof that are credited to other causes. Both the quantity of explosives used and the number of purposes to which they are applied are increasing. They are now made at about 150 plants, in different parts of the United States, and the product of a single year is estimated at nearly 500,000,000 pounds. Nothing in all this material is a safe or "safety" explosive when in the hands of a careless or ignorant person; and this is true whether considered in connection with the shipment or the use of these explosives. In addition to the large losses of life and property resulting from an improper use of explosives in mining, the recent statistics of the railway bureau for the safe transportation of explo- sives have shown more than 400 persons killed or injured and over $3,000,000 worth of property destroyed by explosives in transit by rail. The fact that three years of cooperative effort under the wise supervision of this bureau has reduced these losses to almost nothing encourages the hope that similar cooperative effort may likewise greatly lessen losses of life and property from the use of explosives in mining. The additions to the large death roll of our mines make a recurring appeal to the public for fair treatment of the coal-mining industry, and to the miner and the manager that they join in every possible effort for greater safety. It may never be possible under conditions such as exist to-day to prevent mine accidents entirely. The purpose of this paper is to present to the operators, in other districts a detailed description of the ruining method used and the results obtained to exploiting one of the zinc-lead deposits of the Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri district. No. 1. mine is located in the heart of the town of Picher in the extreme northeast corner of Oklahoma. HISTORY The first prospect drilling was done at No. 1 mine late in-1914, and shaft sinking was started early in 1915. Sufficient ore was developed to start construction of the mill in April, 1016, Production begin in August, 1916, and the mine s been producing, except for short periods, to the present time. The property was originally a 40-acre tract, but additional properties have been consolidated with the original one until the mine now covers 200 acres.

"Introduction Numerous investigators have studied grinding. Each has contributed his bit to a literature that is difficult to correlate. Too many of the results have been transformed into curves with no many ""inflection points"" and ""counterflexures"" that they obscure the issue.Some of the investigators have neglected the very essence of the problem, namely, the power and the amount of material to which a known amount of work was applied. The purpose of this paper is to show the ease with which results can be interpreted when these quantities are duly recognized. Some grinding tests will be given for illustration.Grinding studies are of two kinds: (1) Study of the character of the ore and (2) study of the performance of the machines. Several ores may be crushed by a given machine, or several machines may be used on a given ore. The illustrations given in this report cover both objectives.Grindability Characteristics When the ores are being studied the information sought is grindability characteristics (grain-size distribution) and the grindability (work required to produce new surface) of a group of ores.When the study is of the machines, several machines are used for a given ore or given types of ores, and the grinding performances of the machines are compared by a grain-size study.Table 1 gives the grindability characteristics and grindability of six substances, one of which is coal. The substances are arranged from left to right in progressing order of tons per horsepower-hour. Curves and graphs are not needed for elucidation. The secret of the ease of interpretation is the order mentioned and the similarity of the sizing analyses. Power records must be complete in grinding studies.The grinding device was a ball, plunger, and mortar called the drop weight.' It may be used to advantage when the amount of material to be tested is too small for the orthodox machines.The upper part of table 1 shows the grindability characteristics by the cumulative-sizing analyses. Note how closely the percentage weights agree for a given sieve size. The lower part shows the grindability in terms defined elsewhere. The present paper should be read in conjunction with that paper."

This program involves testing to determine whether a fire hazard exists when the exposed wood surface area of timber in a mine passageway equals 40 percent of the surrounding strata surface, excluding the sill. Twelve full scale fire tests were conducted in a simulated mine passageways, using kerosene pan fires as the ignition source. The tests included three timber sizes, plus one test with roof lagging, two wood types, plus one test with treated timbers, and two ventilation air velocities. The results show air velocity to be an important factor in the occurrence of flame propagation, and that the 40 percent surface area ratio of wood to surrounding strata appears to b0. a valid criteria for fire safety at 150 fpm, but not at 350 fpm.

"INTRODUCTION The ventilation of working places in mines by jets of air discharged from fan-pipe lines is an important phase of mine ventilation, whether the primary purpose is to dilute gas or dust concentrations or to provide air-motion cooling effect. Jets of similar nature are very prominent factors in the ventilation of enclosed spaces, such as buildings and ships. The effectiveness of such jets depends on the distribution of the air in the jet streams, a subject on which the little definite information previously available applied to jet discharge into large, open spaces under conditions quite different from those ordinarily associated with fan-pipe discharge in mines.The results of an initial series of experiments on the discharge of air from fan-pipe lines in mine openings have been described. 3/ This report presents the results of a second series of experiments and compares the results of both series with theory and experiment on jet discharge into large, open spaces. The results of this second series confirm and supplement those of the initial series, in which a 10-inch pipe discharged into an 8- by 8-foot develop¬ment end through seven short discharge pieces of different designs. In the present series the same 10-inch line was used, but the discharge was through 10- to 30-foot lengths of 5-inch, 10-inch, and 20-inch-diameter pipes and through a 20-foot length of 29- by 3-inch pipe. Tests were made with the air discharged into a closed drift or development end, as in the previous series (in which case the discharged air returned past the end of the pipe) and into an open drift (in which case the discharged air did not return past the end of the pipe but continued out along the drift). Test conditions corresponded to the discharge of a jet into a channel closed at one end; in one case, the discharge was directed toward the closed end and in the other toward the open end. The former typifies fan-pipe ventilation of development ends and the latter an abrupt increase in the sectional area of an airway. In both the flow had to pass from jet to open air against some resistance.The tests were made in the Mount Weather Testing Adit of the Bureau at Bluemont, Va., on the pipe line installed for ventilating the adit, and extended from late September to mid-November 1940. Preparations were made for directly comparable series of experiments on the injector effect of fan-pipe discharge in an open drift and on free expansion in large, open spaces, but these test programs were .first postponed in favor of other work and finally abandoned until the war is over."

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 299 natural gas samples from 22 States and three foreign countries. All of the samples were collected during calendar year 1972 as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Fourteen previous publications have presented the results of 9,902 gas analyses prior to 1972. In overview, 1988 appeared to be the best year for the world's mineral industry since 1980, although the all-important petroleum component suffered severely from low prices. With this notable exception, the traditional statistical measures of mineral industry performance, namely production, trade, and consumption, reflected growth in most elements of the world mineral industry from crude material extraction through the gamut of downstream processing. Moreover, the growth was reasonably well distributed geographically, with many countries sharing in the substantial upturn in activity. World crude mineral output value was estimated at over $1,272 billion in current dollars ($1,090 billion in constant 1983 dollars). The value added by the processing component of the mineral industry raised the total value of the industry's output to an estimated $3,057 billion in current dollars ($2,620 billion in constant 1983 dollars). Less easily assessed was the value of mineral commodities moving in 1988's international world trade, particularly because of the declines in world crude oil and refinery product prices. It remained to be seen if increased volume and value in nonfuel mineral and coal exports, coupled with an increase in the volume of oil exports, would be adequate to offset the drop in oil prices. Whether or not the value of world mineral commodity trade topped the 1987 level of over $498 billion, an increase in the volume of mineral commodity trade was almost assured. Similarly, although comprehensive statistics were not avail-able on consumption of all mineral commodities in all countries, available data on selected major commodities in selected major countries suggested that not only had output of most mineral commodities advanced, but so too had consumption levels for most commodities.
