Zircon sand may be reacted with sodium hydroxide at 600° C. to form sodium zirconate and sodium silicate. Sodium zirconate is water insoluble and so may be washed free of sodium silicate. The sodium zirconate may then be converted to zirconyl chloride by the action of hydrochloric acid and the zirconyl chloride crystals separated by cooling the solution. This approach produces zirconyl chloride of satisfactory purity with less cost than is involved in buying anhydrous zirconium chloride and converting it. The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to develop a standard fire test for 5-gal containers used for storing combustible fluids in underground coal mines. A standard test method was developed which evaluates the performance of the container in a 4-min tray fire. Bureau investigators used the standard test method to evaluate several types of closed 5-gal plastic and metal cans in outdoor tests. Each can tested contained 1 gal of nonfire-resistant (NFR) hydraulic oil. A container failed the test if it lost its contents in any of seven trials. Contents spilled either as a result of thermal rupture or melting. Fewer than 10 pct of the metal containers failed this criterion, but all the plastic containers failed. The metal container failures were usual-ly due to tipping over during pressure relief, which spilled the NFR oil. Replacing the NFR oil in the container with kerosene resulted in failure of more than 30 pct of the metal containers. The standard tests and preliminary tests showed that plastic containers are not equivalent to metal containers in their ability to contain combustibles such as lubricants and greases in a fire. For solvents and lubricants more volatile than NFR hydraulic oil, approved metal safety containers are recommended.

This paper is one of a series covering mineral resources of the Nation . It describes briefly most of the known manganese deposits of eastern Arizona , which for the purpose of this report includes the counties of Navajo , Apache , Gila, Graham, Greenlee , Pinal , Pima , Santa Cruz , and Cochise . With few exceptions , these descriptions are the result of field examinations by the writers . Work on this paper was begun in May 1956 , and in the following 18 months 151 deposits were examined . The distribution of the deposits by counties is as follows : 1 in Navajo , and 1 in Apache , 37 in Gila , 4 in Graham, 13 in Greenlee , 25 in Pinal , 13 in Pima , 12 in Santa Cruz , and 45 in Cochise . In surveyed areas the locations of the deposits are described by section , township , and range and in unsurveyed areas , by approximate projections of these subdivisions . The township and range numbers refer to the Gila and Salt River base and meridian . The history, production, ownership , geologic setting , and mining methods used are discussed for most of the deposits that were visited . Probably , some occurrences have been overlooked , but all of the principal ones have been examined . Ore dressing studies were made of typical ores from several of the larger districts . The work was performed in the laboratory of the Bureau of Mines Tucson Metallurgy Research Laboratory . The results of these studies are given with the descriptions of the deposits from which the samples were taken .

This report describes exploration for lead-zinc ores at the Madonna mine between 1945 and 1953 by the Utze Lode Co., the Bureau of Mines, and the company with Government financial aid under the Defense Production Act of 1950. The Madonna mine yielded silver, lead, and zinc with a net smelter value of over $5,000.000. from 1882 to 1924. The mine was inactive from 1924 to 1942 when the Utze Lode Co. acquired the property. Possibilities for finding ore in the mine, especially at depth, were considered favorable. The Utze Lode Co. began rehabilitating the Madonna mine in 1945. An exploration program, which consisted of winze sinking and drifting, failed to produce commercial are.

Operations covered included all State metal mines using substantial quantities of water and all concentrators and smelters. Also included in the survey were 8 operations in the nonmetallic group; 22 in the plating, metal-fabricating, and metal-forming categories; 1 public-utility power company; and 6 water companies. The extent of the water shortage in Arizona is reflected in mineral- industry water-use practices, in the high cost and low quality of water used at many operations, and in the stringency of State control of well drilling and pumping. Many mineral-industry operations are among those users most seriously affected by the uneven water supply.

Introduction Industrial safety professionals recognize that adequate illumination is essential to a safe and productive work environment. The need for effective, lighting in underground coal mines is even greater.1 Designing appropriate lighting systems for these mines is no easy [ ] task because of the unique environment and work procedures encountered in underground coal-mining operations. Miners must depend totally on artificial lighting systems to see. Moreover, the working face is a low-reflectivity and low-contrast environment and is continually advancing or retreating.2 Laboratory mock-ups have been a major part of the process lighting equipment manufacturers must under- go to design an underground machine-mounted lighting system. The mock-ups often have taken considerable time. Furthermore, modifications to a lighting system (using different luminaires with an existing configuration or changing a luminaire's location, orientation, etc.) could require more time with additional mock-ups and laboratory measurements. Understanding the need to improve this situation, the US Bureau of Mines has developed an alternate method for facilitating lighting system mock-ups. A PC-Program (CAP),* with the latest software technology enables users to design, alter, and evaluate under- ground machine-mounted illumination systems. Lux levels and distance are measured as the luminaire is moved incrementally through angular traverses about horizontal and vertical axes. The measurements and angles subsequently are entered into the model. From this input data, three-dimensional isolux or isofootcandle profiles are constructed for luminaires that can be placed at various locations and orientations on a mining machine. As an example, Figure 1 shows a computer display of 21.5 Ix or 2.00 fc profiles for luminaires mounted on a simulated mine-shuttle car. Using this information, the model allows the user to determine the lux level at different locations in space about the shuttle car. How the model calculates illumination During initial development of the CAP model, the isolux profile of the luminaire was determined using the inverse square law (ISL) .3 The method of gathering data comprised recording a single measurement of distance at 21.5 ± 1.21x (2.00 ±11 fc) for angular traverses following 0.09 rad (5 degree) increments. This data was then used to find the illumination in space for any other distance at a given azimuth and elevation using the ISL. Limitations, however, exist with this method.4 The main one is that the ISL assumes a luminaire is a single point source of light, so long as the distance is greater than five times the 1al;gest dimension of the luminous area of the luminaire.5 Also, by using a single measurement to calculate the illumination for a given luminaire in the CAP model a large error could result from an inaccurate measurement.

Laboratory and pilot-plant tests of spodumene-beryl pegmatites of the Kings Mountain, N. C., area resulted in development of a new and improved method by the Bureau of Mines for separating and recovering spodumene, mica, and beryl. The process was successfully applied to other domestic pegmatites and a spodumene flotation-plant tailing containing about 0.5 percent beryl. The method comprised soap flotation of the spodumene, using combinations of sodium fluoride and lignin sulfonate as conditioning agents to recover 80 to 85 percent of the contained lithia in concentrates assaying over 6 percent Li20. About 80 percent or more of the beryl was retarded in the spodumene tailing. The beryl subsequently was activated, floated, and cleaned in a secondary circuit to yield beryl concentrates containing 6 to 7 percent BeO. The tests also demonstrated that a good recovery of high-grade mica could be produced.

Open-cut mining of copper ores in the western United States is a relatively new industry. At first the mining methods were mainly adapted from those used at open-cut iron mines and at quarries, but now efficient practices that are more suitable for the copper deposits have been developed. The pioneer in this field is the Utah Copper Co., of Bingham, Utah, which deserves great credit for working out much of the early procedure. Stripping began at that mine in 1906, and the large Garfield concentrator was put in commission in 1908. Next in order of development were the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., at Ely, Nev. ; the Chino mine of the Ray Consolidated Copper Co., at Santa Rita, N. Mex. ; the New Cornelia Copper Co., at Ajo, Ariz. ; the Sacramento Hill mine of the Copper Queen Branch, Phelps Dodge Corporation, at Bisbee, Ariz.; and the open cut of the United Verde Copper Co., at Jerome, Ariz. The Sacramento Hill mine began to produce in 1923, and the United Verde open-cut mine has produced ore mainly in connection with stripping. The writer visited the Utah Copper mine in September, 1923; the Nevada Consolidated in August, 1923; the Chino in July, 1924; and the New Cornelia, the Sacramento Hill, and the United Verde open cut at various times during 1922, 1923, 1924, and 1925, mostly in connection with other work.

WHEN the Bureau of Mines initiated the program of large-scale research and development in the field of synthetic liquid fuels authorized in the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of April 5, 1044, the Coal Preparation Section was assigned the task of obtaining data on the preparation characteristics of the coal in large reserves that might be adaptable to use in this new industry. It is natural that, as the rapidly developing general research program brought about new concepts of raw-material quality, preferred geographical location, and the like, the orientation of coal-preparation investigations should have undergone some change. The first major assignment was the sampling and testing of a series of typical American coals deemed to he suitable for hydrogenation based on early research work conducted by the Bureau of Mines. This first series of tests has been completed and is reported in this paper.

The explosion occurred at about 3:05 p.m. in the largest of the 11 school buildings on the campus. THIS REPORT gives results of an investi¬gation of the carbonizing properties of coals from Pittsburgh bed, Jamison No. 9 mine, Marion County, W. Va., and from Upper Freeport bed, Bull Run No. 1 mine, Preston County, W. Va. The study included Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association tests at 800° and 900° C. and various chemical and physical tests designed to evaluate the plastic, expanding, and agglutinating properties of coal. A blend of each coal was carbonized in the 500-pound slot oven. The carbonization sample of Pittsburgh coal contained 2.7 percent moisture, 35.8 percent volatile matter, 54.4 percent fixed carbon, 7.1 percent ash, and 0.9 percent sulfur. It contained 60.9 percent fixed carbon on the dry, mineral-matter-free basis and had a heating value of 14,780 B. t. u. per pound on the moist, mineral-matter-free basis. It therefore ranks as high-volatile A bituminous and was blended with low-volatile Pocahontas No. 3 coal. Upper Freeport coal contained 2.8 percent moisture, 27.7 percent volatile matter, 60.9 percent fixed carbon, 8.6 percent ash, and 1.0 percent sulfur, as carbonized. It contained 69.5 percent fixed carbon on the dry, mineral-matter-free basis and therefore ranks as medium-volatile bituminous. It was blended with high-volatile A Pittsburgh coal from Allegheny County Pa.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the silver production potential of the Leadville (California) mining district, Lake County, Colo., in 1966-67. The mining history of the district, the ground conditions encountered in mining, and the mine-support methods used are reviewed. The drainage problem is discussed in detail. An initial objective was to establish the existence of potential silver resources minable by low-cost open-pit methods, particularly in the silver-bearing manganese halos surrounding the major deposits. The report concludes that under present conditions, development of the deposits in the area is not economically feasible; however, a pioneer rotary noncore drilling program demonstrated that this type of exploration is technically feasible. Potential reserves of silver and associated metals are estimated. Possible mining methods for recovery of the reserves are discussed. Future production possibilities from the various subareas of the district are analysed, considering optimum operating size. Consolidation of small individual holdings for unit operation is recommended. Type of operation, amount of rehabilitation, size and type of concentrating plants required, drainage and other mining problems, and metal price trends are discussed as they bear on economic feasibility of development.

This document presents a description of the results of a project aimed at producing a broad description of current mining training programs and an evaluation of their effectiveness with respect to reducing mine injuries. Aggregate training and injury data were used to evaluate the overall training effort at 300 mines as well as specific efforts in twelve categories of training course objectives. From such evaluations, recommendations were derived with particular emphasis being placed on identifying program characteristics that tend to be associated with effective training. Recommendations were also formulated with reference to role changes in industry and government interaction with respect to training programs, new or additional training programs, changes in the types of course materials and training methodologies, and recommendations concerning new areas for investigation.

Coalbed discontinuities historically have been hazardous to mining as well as obstructions to efficient production. An effective means of mapping these features is needed in order to plan safe and efficient mine development. This Bureau of Mines report discusses the use of surface seismic techniques for this purpose. At a southwestern Pennsylvania mine, a system of coalbed discontinu-ities (paleochannels) was accurately mapped by the Bureau of Mines using borehole log methods and underground observation. This site was chosen to test the value of a high-resolution surface seismic reflection on technique for coalbed mapping. A statistical study performed at this mine indicated that the probability of accurately delineating this paleochannel system with conventional borehole methods was remote. A total of 1.47 miles of high-resolution seismic survey, comprised of four seismic profiles, was conducted in known and suspected coalbed discontinuity areas. Several test holes were drilled on the seismic lines in order to evaluate the interpretations. It was found, based on these and other existing boreholes, that it is possible to predict these dis-continuities. Paleochannel washouts were correctly predicted in several instances but in other instances were either incorrectly predicted or not predicted in areas of known discontinuities.

Since its inception in 1910, the Bureau of Mines has been the principal Federal agency involved in ore reserve estimations, using such traditional methods as polygons of influence and variations of inverse distance weighting While adequate for estimating the average are grades in a mining block or section, these methods do mot, however, provide a consistent way of quantifying the reliability of the estimates. This report describes a technique for enhancing ore reserve estimations using geostatistics, the methodology of which combines the spatial and random aspects of geologic phenomena into a formal theoretical framework for deriving the estimation variance of ore reserves. Correctly used, geostatistics enables confidence intervals to be placed around ore reserve estimates calculated from drill hole data. A geostatistical software system was obtained -From the U.S. Geological Survey and installed, aster slight modifications, on the Bureau's Wang computer. System testing and validation was conducted using a simple cast-book-type example. This was then followed by variogram analysis, point kriging and block kriging of data from a previously worked section of a uranium mine.

The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel 3/ the second with its use in acid electric steel practice, 4/ and the third with its use in low-carbon basic open-hearth steelmaking. 2/ A résumé of those investigations E7 appeared in the magazine STEEL. 5/ The present report deals with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of four types of stainless steel and the new Timken 16-25-6 alloy. The Bureau of Mines supplied The Timken Roller Bearing Co. with 62,000 pounds of electrolytic manganese for use in the tests.The electrolytic manganese was produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant, Boulder City, Nev., by the process developed by the Bureau and described in Bulletin 463, Operation of Electrolytic Manganese Pilot Plant, Boulder City, Nev., by J. H. Jacobs. J. W. Hunter, W. H. Yarroll, P. E. Churchward, R. G. Knickerbocker, R. W. Lewis, H.A. Heller, and J. H. Linck. The workcarried out under the direction of R. S. In the course of, investigation of domestic manganese-mineral occurrences, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected 2-ton lots of ore from properties in the Cleveland-district, Idaho. As only one of the ores was high enough in grade for direct marketing to-producers of ferromanganese, ore-dressing concentration methods were investigated to determine their amenability to treatment. High-grade ore. (38.7 percent Mn) from the Idaho Manganese Mining Co. was taken from a replacement deposit in limestone consisting of several horizontal beds 1 to 5 feet thick, about 1 mile northeast of Cleveland. The manganese minerals occur as an intimate intergrowth of manganese oxides, containing minor amounts of limonite, ?quartz, and calcite as rather fine inclusions. However, the major contaminants are claylike products of rock decomposition, which can be eliminated by thorough washing of the ore at relatively coarse sizes. The Hot Spot property is 1 mile south of Cleveland. The ore occurs as a replacement deposit of medium-grade- ore in limestone, .The sample taken by the Bureau of Mines assayed 26.0 percent Mn. The manganese minerals consist of nodules, principally pyrolusite with some psilomelane and manganite embedded in wad.' The low-grade wad, containing manganese and siliceous minerals in intimate association, was easily rejected by washing.

The Bureau of Mines has written a computer program for the design and cost of a shell and tube type heat exchanger, in which a change in phase occurs on the shell side. The total cost, which was minimized, includes the annual fixed charges and annual operating costs. The program was written to meet the following requirements: (1) Triangular pitch, (2) single or multiple pass, and (3) heating or cooling. Price optimum design was obtained for four standard tube diameters and pitch. Standard heat exchangers whose area equaled or exceeded the required area are also listed. The program was made adaptable to various fluids and to various tube dimensions by including many of the required data such as physical properties of the fluids, tube data, and standard shell data as input data.
