Twenty eight pulse release sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas field tests were run in a multi-level multi-vein hard rock mine to measure leakage ventilation. The mine had numerous underground booster fans and gob filled old stoping areas and consequently numerous leakage paths. The tests proved that the equipment and methods developed by the USBM can be used successfully in complicated ventilation circuits. The leakage quantities varied each time a major change was made in the main ventilation circuit. Usually leakage quantities had to be remeasured after a main ventilation change, but measurements could be duplicated for anyone configuration except under certain defined circumstances. The characteristics of an individual leakage path could be determined from the difference between the measured sum of two paths and the calculated characteristics of one of the paths. Many leakage paths could not be evaluated accurately on one shift. Comments are made on equipment performance and field techniques. Programs for the calculation of gas concentrations and recirculation from measured data and for the mechanical integration necessary for a calculated leakage characteristic have been written for an HP 9810 and are included.

The estimated recoverable reserves in the area in the vicinity of Eska 2 mine are, 699,300 tons in the Chapin and Emery bas of the Maitland group. Those recoverable reserves are in the area between the Eska fault zone and Jonesville fault and extend down dip from the outcrops. No reserves were developed by the Eska 2 entry or by drill hole 14-16 in the Eska fault zone. The small quantity of reserves in the vicinity of the Eska 2 mine is insufficient to justify development of a now, modern .nine in this area. The estimated recoverable reserves in the area east of aka Creek are 974,500 tons in the Eska, Shaw, and Martin beds of the Eska group. Most of those reserves occur in the south limb of the syncline. It will be necessary to practice subjacent mining methods to recover these reserves in the Eska group. The Eska bed developed by the diamond drilling in this area comprises coal end few thin partings. The Shaw and Martin beds comprise two bunches of coal separated by partings, and the product from full-bed mining will require thorough preparation.

Past issues of Minerals and Materials have discussed such aspects of the economy as consumption and investment expenditures, interest rates, productivity, and international trade barriers and their effect on the minerals industry here and abroad. In this issue, we will (l) look at recent indications of a possible economic recovery, (2) present 1983 expectations reflecting the results of industry surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), and (3) briefly discuss the contribution of the U.S. mining industry to total gross national product (GNP). THE RECOVERY Throughout most of 1982, DOC's Composite Index of Leading Indicators provided evidence of impending improvement in the economy. The index increased moderately during eight of the months in 1982 and then jumped an estimated 3.6 percent in January 1983 (table 1). While the leading indicators continued to predict improvement, the general economy, as measured by the Index of Industrial Production, continued its slide through November 1982 (table 2). Finally total industrial production increased in December 1982 and continued on an upward path in January and February, as predicted by the leading indicators.

A shaft or slope bottom is that portion of a mine that is contiguous to the bottom of the main hoisting shaft or slope. It includes the terminal tracks for loaded-and empty-car storage, locomotive run-arounds, locomotive shops, charging stalls, supply rooms, pump rooms, waiting rooms, and offices for dispatcher, weighmen, and foremen. This paper will deal principally with the arrangement of tracks and the handling of cars on the bottom, but includes other data that may be affected, directly or indirectly, by the bottom lay-out. All of the mines discussed are being operated in comparatively level coal seams.

"This project constitutes the results of a geophysical field investigation undertaken in the mining areas in the vicinity of Marion, Crittenden County, Kentucky.Results were obtained at well-known mines being worked for fluorspar. Of special interest was the determination of mineral trends at such mines, particularly in relation to the fault patterns, because of ore in them.This work also constitutes a comparison between the field information that can be obtained by purely geological means and the additional information obtained by applying geophysical surveys to the same areas.As the mineralization in this area is controlled almost surely by the faults therein, the great importance of locating faults cannot be over emphasized. Accordingly, there has been incorporated herein the analyses as well as the application of electrical resistivity methods for fault determinations.In the western part of Kentucky, particularly in that area designated as the Cave-In-Rock quadrangle by the United States Geological Survey, is located the center of the fluorspar mining district of Kentucky. From the mining as well as commercial viewpoint, this area is of considerable interest and importance. It has been described by Currier4/ as a large structural dome that collapsed, through faulting, into a mosaic composed of a main fault pattern that has a strike to the northeast in sedimentary formations. Accompanying this main fault pattern are a large number of irregular faults. This fault complex is also traversed by a dike pattern that has a regional strike for this region focusing a northwesterly direction. The faulting occurred before the dike intrusions, the latter being composed largely of peridotite rocks. According to Reed,5/ most of the metallic mineralization, composed chiefly of galena and sphalerite, occurs at or near the Intersection of the dikes with the faults, indicating a possible igneous origin of the ore deposits. Reed adds that the fluorspar generally does not follow this rule but may also be found in other portions of the faulted zone not directly related to dike intrusions. The area may be considered of equal interest in the occurrence of lead and zinc and in the occurrence of fluorspar controlled by the faults. Hatmaker and Davis6/ give detailed information concerning the form of the ore bodies and economic factors that control ore production in this area; they also suggest the application of geophysical methods in this territory. Ulrich and Smith7/ also discuss geological details in this area. This area is therefore of interest, whether examined from a large structural point of view or from a very detailed angle. The former will assist in determining the origin of the mineralization and its economic possibilities, whereas the latter will give details concerning fault locations and their geologically and geophysically controlling features. This work was undertaken as a pilot investigation relating to the study of the location of fault occurrences, in which it was attempted to determine the location of faults as well as the fault patterns in certain isolated areas. No effort was made to identify the mineralization from the gouge material in the faulted zones; this problem was left for subsequent investigations."

Overall mineral industry productive activity in Europe increased in 1965, following general upward trends in gross national product and total industrial production4 recorded. The gross national product of non-Communist Europe in market prices in 1965 was estimated at $572 billion and that of Communist Europe at $409 billion. However, the extractive sectors of the mineral industries generally did not fare as well as the processing sectors. In fact, a number of countries recorded lower production levels in this sector in 1965 than in 1964 and most countries had a lower growth rate in extractive industry output than in overall industrial output. Among the non-Communist nations of Europe, a general decline in coal production and lower levels of iron ore output in France, West Germany, and Luxembourg contributed significantly to the smaller growth rates or declines in extractive indexes. Where higher indexes were registered, this generally resulted from the performance of the petroleum and natural gas industry; exceptions were Greece, Norway, and Sweden. The decline recorded for Czechoslovakia was attributable entirely to poorer performance by that nation's coal industry.

A comprehensive study of all bituminous coal-mine fatalities occurring in Pennsyl¬ vania during the 5-year period, 1926-1930, was made to try to determine the factors that in¬ fluence accidents which cause these fatalities. During this study some two thousand reports of fatalities were reviewed, and pertinent information as to causes and influencing factors were tabulated therefrom. These tabulations are discussed in detail, and in some instances recommendations are made with a view to reducing the hazards in certain classes of these accidents.

The objective of this contract is to design, build and demonstrate a support system to improve roof control in the entries of longwall mines. The objective of this phase has been the detailed design of such a system and the selection of a test site in which to perform the pilot demonstration. The result is a complete set of detail drawings or specifications which define the three major components of the system. The Gate Support is a variation of a face chock which has an extended canopy and additional hydraulic legs to protect the region of the face-entry intersection. The Entry Support is a steel beam and hydraulic prop set which is reusable and serves to support the first 100 or more feet of entry inby the longwall face. The Transporter is a bolter-like vehicle with a crane used for installing and retreating the beam sets. The test site selected is CF&I's Allen Mine in Colorado. They presently use simi¬lar steel beams and expect the FMA support system to be more effective as well as recoverable. It is recommended that the completed drawings be used to build a prototype system and test it first in a remote section of the mine and then in the active longwall tail entry.

Intense vibration can be transmitted to the hands and arms of workers who use hand-held percussive or vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. Continued habitual exposure to vibration directed to the hands can cause patterns of various symptoms associated with hand-arm vibration syndrome (HVAS). The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) first published ISO 5349 in 1986.3 This standard specified methods for measuring and evaluating vibration directed into the hands from hand-held vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) published ANSI S3.34 the same year.1 This standard was modeled after ISO 5349-1986 and specified methods for assessing exposure to hand-arm vibration. The Parliament of the European Union has issued the European Union Human Vibration Directive-2002/44/EC, which specifies vibration daily exposure action values (DEAV) of 2.5 m/s2 and daily exposure limit values (DELV) of 5.0 m/s2. These values have generally been accepted by medical experts, scientists, and engineers in governmental agencies, research institutions, and industry in the USA and other countries.2 When they are achieved, they will reduce the potential for the development of symptoms related to HAVS among workers exposed to hand-arm vibration. Significant improvements in measurement and analysis instrumentation, miniature and subminiature accelerometers, and medical diagnostic and assessment protocols have being introduced since 1986 when ANSI S3.34 was first published. In response to these improvements and the introduction of the EU Human Vibration Directive, ANSI Working Group S2.39 developed the revision to ANSI S3.34, which has now been published as ANSI S2.70-2006.2 Method ANSI S2.70 specifies the use of the hand-arm vibration measurement procedures outlined in ISO 5349, Parts 1 and 2.2,4,5 It requires the measurement of ISO frequency-weighted acceleration values in three mutually orthogonal axes of vibration. These values are then vectorially added to obtain the vibration total value, ahv: [ ] where ahwx, ahwy, and ahwz are the measured r.m.s. Case histories were used to document and evaluate deficiencies in underground mine closures which have resulted in post-operation problems such as subsidence shaft failures, acid or toxic water drainage and others. Three different underground mining districts in the United States were investigated; 1) an iron mining district in Michigan 2) coal mining districts in eastern Ohio and southern Illinois and 3) three metal mining districts in central Colorado. Previous work in the Michigan district on problems with subsidence and acid water drainage provided the background from which the concept for this project was developed Student investigators working towards their MS degrees in Mining Engineering did the work on the eastern coal and western metal districts. The combined studies show that problems from acid water drainage, subsidence and inadequately protected mine shafts are the most severe and widespread. Suggestions of a technical nature are presented as partial solutions to some of these problems. It was determined that pre-closure evaluations could result in the identification of some potential problems that may occur after the mine is closed. Early recognition of these problems would be an advantage for at this time more options are available to the mine operator to either prevent them or to plan for their occurrence. Mine closure and reclamation should be considered as a part of mining and be incorporated in the mining plan. This would result in reduced environmental impact and would be achieved at a lower overall cost to the mining companies and to society. The role of water in the occurrence of several types of subsidence during mine flooding was significant at some mines in the Michigan district. These mechanisms which involve, friction reduction, gravity loading, overburden transport and hydraulic forces in a flooded mine probably have a broader effect than is currently recognized. Control of these processes may offer some interesting options during mine closure. It is recognized that technical solutions alone cannot provide all of the answers to problems associated with underground mines. Education, modified attitudes on the part of regulators and operators, and a more realistic perception of the importance and value of mining by the general public are also needed.

The record of fatalities from mine explosions during the past 2 fiscal years has been anything but encouraging; more men were killed by explosions (379) than were killed from the ante cause during to' preceding 6 years combined (368). The reason for the large increase in the number of explosion fatalities during the past 2 years as compared with the previous 6 years is not entirely clear. In some instances, there has been laxity in the enforcement of State mining laws; in others, both workers and operating officials is have failed to observe recognized precautionary measures to prevent explosions. In many of the explosions that lave occurred within the asst few years in mechanized mines it has been evident that speed of operation and a demand for maximum tonnage at minimum cost resulted in neglect of ordinary safety measures.

Reports technical progress in designing four machines to be used in mining coal underground, applying innovative concepts at the design stage (instead of add-ons). A study phase was followed by design activity, including calculations supporting the designs. Scale models of three machines were built, and a full-scale mock-up of the conventional loader was used to measure human factors parameters.

The value of mineral production in Alabama continued to increase and reached a new high of $260 million, 3 percent above the previous high established in 1967. Record high values were reported for bentonite, crushed marble, lime, miscellaneous clay, portland cement, salt, sand and gravel, and scrap mica. The value of coal, total cement, petroleum, and stone accounted for 87 percent of the State's total value of mineral production. Alabama ranked second among the States in the production of bauxite and scrap mica and third in kaolin, masonry cement, and native asphalt.

This report presents the results of a joint Bureau of Mines-U.S. Department of Energy project that evaluated a newly developed low-coal mining system: the 4M miniminer system. The evaluation took place from April through October 1981 and determined potential health, safety, and productivity factors for the mining system using the surface test facilities at Bruceton, PA. The planning, testing, results of testing, and a summary evaluation of the 4M miniminer system are included in the report. The miniminer system was found to be a very good concept with future potential for safe, healthful, and economic production in thin-seam mining. The mining system was also judged to have considerable potential for use in some coal seams that are presently considered unminable by other existing mining equipment. The preproduction, prototype version of the miniminer system that was tested suffered from several safety and production problems. These problems are also described, along with suggested remedies.

The primary objective of this program was to determine the toxic fume and fire hazard of elastomeric noise abatement materials with a limited effort expended on the evaluation of specific treatments applied to mine timbers. Under the conditions employed, for a dimethyl silicone rubber, formaldehyde presented the major toxic threat; acrolein was the main toxic species for both polyester and polyether urethanes and an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin; in the case of flame-retardant styrene-butadiene rubber compositions, hydrogen chloride, and in the case of PFA-treated timber, furfural, were the major toxic compounds. Of the materials studied, the flame-retardant styrene-butadiene rubbers presented the greatest toxic hazard. The generated data have been reduced to toxic load tabulations amenable to employment for potential hazard assessment.

This User's Manual, extracted from information contained in the Final Report for the above referenced project, outlines test procedures to measure the braking capabilities of underground non-coal rubber-tired mining equipment. Methods to interpret test results, recommendations for safe braking capabilities, and basic techniques to improve braking systems and road surfaces are also discussed. Possible applications for runaway vehicle protective devices other than braking systems are reviewed. Also included is a listing of mining equipment and brake component manufacturers who supply the majority of equipment to the United States non-coal mining industry. In conjunction with this list of manufacturers, a general tabulation of brake related specifications appears for vehicles observed during stopping tests conducted underground.

Load-haul dump vehicles (LHDs) are used to move waste rock and ore in underground mining operations. The LHD is designed for bi-directional operation and the driver sits sideways to the direction of travel. LHD operators have higher reports of low back pain and neck discomfort than other mobile equipment operators who do not sit sideways in the vehicle, but are exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV)1. Exposure to WBV is linked with reports of lower-back pain, neck problems and spinal degeneration2,3. Static sitting postures, sitting with the neck and back twisted, and sitting with the back in an unsupported posture are also linked with an increased risk of developing back pain4. The objective of this study was to determine typical vibration exposure levels and driving postures for LHD operators. Methods Whole-body vibration exposure was measured at the seat-pan, in accordance with the ISO 2631-1 standard5, on seven LHD vehicles with a 10 yard bucket haulage capacity. Vibration data were recorded with a Biometrics™ DataLog II (P3X8) and stored on a 128 Mb Simpletech™ multimedia card. Comparisons were made to the ISO 2631-1 Health Guidance Caution Zone (HGCZ) in order to determine potential injury risk. Operator posture was monitored with three digital video cameras which were secured inside each operator’s cab to the top left corner, top right corner and back right corner. Reflective tape was placed on each driver’s shoulders, head, and back in several locations and in several locations on the vehicle seat in order to aid in posture coding. Posture coding was performed with 3DMatch v4.50 multiple video view analysis feature. Vibration measurement and posture recording occurred simultaneously for 60 minutes while the LHD operator performed typical duties. Results and Discussion Results indicate LHD operators may be exposed to whole-body vibration levels putting them at risk for injury (Table 1). According to ISO 2631-1 the frequency weighted acceleration values corresponding to the lower and upper limits of the HGCZ (for an 8 hr exposure duration) are 0.45 and 0.90 m/s2 respectively5. Six of the seven vehicles showed exposure levels within the HGCZ defined for 8 hours. Preliminary video analysis indicated LHD operators were exposed to potentially harmful levels of WBV while adopting asymmetric postures (Table 2). For example, one LHD operator (Figure 1) worked with his neck twisted greater than 40 degrees for 93 % of a 60 minute work cycle. According to the Swedish National Work Injury Criteria, neck rotation should be less than 15 degrees if the motion is required for greater than 80% of the work time6. The colony of French Guiana ( or Cayenne ) is administered by a governor , assisted by a privy council of five members . A council - general of 16 members is elected by French citizens resident in Guiana, and the colony is represented 3 in the French parliament by one deputy . The area is about 34,740 square miles . French Guiana is the largest gold producer of the French colonies , producing nearly $ 1,000,000 worth annually . Considerable prospecting has been done on the bauxite deposits , which are extensive . Copper , iron , lead , and 4 mercury deposits are also reported . In 1931 , 10,000 prospectors for gold were reported as working . The French Government is taking an active interest and has sent a committee of mining experts to explore the region ; no permits are to be issued to individual prospectors while the committee is in the colony . Plans for development of mining industry include consideration of 4,500 convicts and 2,500 natives already in the colony and available for labor .
